Grief is a natural and self-limited adaptation process to a new reality that emerges after a significant loss (whether real or perceived), with a broad variety of manifestations that exert an impact on a grieving person’s health. The study aim was to synthesize the evidence available about the interventions carried out by Primary Health Care nurses, by means of an individual approach to reduce maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk. A scoping review was conducted (November and December 2023) through searches in Medline, Cinahl, Web of Science, ProQuest and Scopus using MeSH terms combined with Booleans. Primary research of any design in adult people undergoing grief situations and receiving professional assistance by nurses in the primary, home and community care contexts published after 2009 in English, Spanish or Portuguese languages were included. Excluded publications were those conducted in in-hospital clinical settings and which did not correspond to research designs or the gray literature. The screening process was carried out by two reviewers using the appropriate JBI critical appraisal tools for each design and discrepancies were resolved by a third reviewer. A total of n = 10 studies were included (n = 4 qualitative, n = 2 RCTs, n = 1 quasi-experimental, n = 2 cross-sectional observational, and n = 2 mixed methods). The qualitative studies identified topics and subtopics of professionals’ and families’ experiences of grief. The observational studies analyzed symptoms and factors associated with the grieving process. Interventions consisted of cognitive–behavioral therapies delivered by psychological specialists who assessed the severity of grief in a range of cultural contexts using different instruments. The evidence retrieved from the studies that address the reduction in maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk is not conclusive. There is a need to increase both the number and the methodological quality of studies assessing the effectiveness of Nursing care in Primary Health Care for individuals experiencing maladaptive grief or maladaptive grief risk. Further research should focus on experimental studies, developing specific interventions conducted by nurses to address individual’s grief and prevent maladaptive grief.

One of the priorities in family and community care is the epidemiological surveillance of the care needs and dysfunctionality present in populations of highly complex chronic patients (HCCPs) using standardised nursing languages. The aim of this study is to establish the prevalence of care needs and dysfunctionality among HCCPs in a specific health area by municipalities and geographical areas (metropolitan, north, and south) while verifying correlations with sociodemographic, financial, and health characteristics. This is an epidemiological, observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study carried out with a sample of 51,374 HCCPs, whose data were grouped into 31 municipalities. Data were collected on the following variables: sociodemographic, financial, health, functional status (health patterns), and care needs (nursing diagnoses). The mean age of the HCCPs was 73.41 (1.45) years, of which 56.18 (2.86)% were women. The municipalities in the northern area have a significantly higher proportion of older patients, HCCPs, lower incomes, and higher unemployment rates. The southern area had higher proportions of non-Spanish nationals and professionals in the hotel and catering industry, and the metropolitan area had a higher proportion of employed individuals and higher levels of education. Northern municipalities had a higher prevalence of illnesses and anxiolytic and anti-psychotic treatments. Dysfunctionality frequencies did not differ significantly by area. However, a higher prevalence of 13 nursing diagnoses was observed in the north. A high number of correlations were observed between population characteristics, dysfunctionality, and prevalent diagnoses. Finally, the frequencies of dysfunctionality in the population and the most common care needs were mapped by municipality. This research sought to ascertain whether there was an unequal distribution of these two aspects among HCCPs in order to gain a deeper epidemiological understanding of them from a family and community perspective using standardised nursing languages. Objeto del presente ensayo reflexivo: Mostrar y reflexionar sobre la utilidad que tiene la investigación cualitativa y/o fenomenológica en la atención del paciente que presenta diabetes. Desarrollo: la atención integral de una forma biopsicosocial, cultural y espiritual tanto al paciente como a la familia del mismo por parte del profesional sanitario, juega un papel importante a la hora de tener calidad de vida en el nuevo estilo de vida. Conclusiones y reflexiones finales: La investigación cualitativa en enfermería, ayuda a interpretar el sufrimiento del paciente, su relación con su entorno social y cultural y sus sentimientos e inquietudes dentro de la diabetes.

Introducción: El duelo es una respuesta compleja ante la pérdida de un ser querido que exhibe diferentes rutas para su ajuste, la continuidad de vínculos forma parte de su naturaleza. Objetivo: Analizar la experiencia de duelo por un ser querido en hombres y mujeres relacionada a percepción de cercanía con la persona fallecida, continuidad de vínculos y diagnósticos de Enfermería. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the complications of diabetes mellitus (DM), with macular oedema being one of the leading causes of avoidable blindness among individuals with DM worldwide. Fundus screening is the only method for early detection and treatment. High-quality training programmes for professionals performing primary care screening are essential to produce high-quality images that facilitate accurate lesion identification. This is a two-phase observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study. The first phase analysed DR knowledge in a sample of nurses. The second phase explored agreement on DR screening between referral ophthalmologists in image assessment (gold standard) and a small group of nurses involved in the previous phase. In phase 1, the agreement rate for screening results was 90%. In phase 2, the overall raw agreement on the screening of fundus photography results between nurses and ophthalmologists was 75% (Cohen’s kappa = 0.477; p < 0.001). Agreement on screening with ophthalmologists was moderate, suggesting that implementing a specific training programme for nurse-led imaging screening would help develop this competence among nurses, ensuring a good level of agreement and patient safety and adding value for users, and also for the sustainability of the healthcare system. Introducción: la pandemia por la covid-19 disminuyó las posibilidades de generar espacios estimulantes para el desarrollo de los niños, puesto que todos los sistemas con los que interactúa un niño en desarrollo se vieron impactados. Objetivo: identificar la evidencia científica que hay sobre los efectos en el desarrollo infantil en menores de 5 años que convivieron con sus padres y madres durante las medidas de distanciamiento social tomadas por causa de la covid-19. Método: revisión integrativa guiada por el marco propuesto por Whittemore y Knafl, y The Prisma Statement, para consultar las bases de datos: Medline, ScienceDirect, Scopus y Scielo, con una búsqueda realizada en inglés, utilizando los descriptores: “child development”, “growth and development”, “parenting”, “teleworking”, “infant care”, “home nursing”, “social isolation”, “coronavirus infections”, “COVID-19”. Los criterios de elegibilidad: estudios cuantitativos o cualitativos que abordaran los efectos directos de la pandemia en niños menores de 5 años; y de exclusión: artículos con población de niñez con trastornos del desarrollo diagnosticados o discapacidad. Resultados: fueron incluidos 17 artículos, cuyos hallazgos se clasifican en las categorías: exposición a estímulos de riesgo, privación de estímulos y exposición a estímulos protectores. Se revela que el estrés parental, la ausencia de juego y una menor exposición a interacciones promotoras del desarrollo se vinculan con alteraciones en el procesamiento cognitivo, emocional y de aprendizaje, y tuvieron un impacto negativo en el desarrollo motriz y del lenguaje. Conclusión: la evidencia sugiere que el distanciamiento social puede ser la causa principal en la aparición de retrasos en el desarrollo infantil, en sus áreas: motriz, de lenguaje, cognitivo y socioemocional.

Resumen El duelo es un proceso de adaptación natural y autolimitado a una nueva realidad que surge tras una pérdida significativa, real o percibida, con un amplio abanico de manifestaciones que producen un impacto en la salud del doliente. Las investigaciones en torno al duelo, han modificado el modo de entender sus procesos, con lo que su clasificación ha variado drásticamente. Los diferentes tipos de duelo pueden agruparse en dos grandes categorías: duelo adaptativo y duelo no adaptativo, incluyendo en este último conjunto un conglomerado de procesos que incluyen el duelo traumático, el duelo complicado y el duelo espiritual. La literatura especializada, recoge diferentes escalas e instrumentos de medida que ayudan a evaluar el curso y el riesgo de complicaciones en el transcurso del duelo. Cada vez son más numerosas las investigaciones asociadas a la continuidad de vínculos, siendo necesaria una evaluación de la efectividad de esta conexión y de su capacidad de adaptación.

Main objective: to deepen the nurses' experience regarding responsibility, insecurity, fear of error and the work environment within the context of occupational and health care in Tenerife. For this purpose, a phenomenological hermeneutic study has been proposed, taking a study sample chosen for the convenience of the population of nurses graduated between 2009 and 2014, of the two university nursing schools in Tenerife. It establishes as the main category "to feel", from which arise the subcategories "to feel uncertainty", "to feel fear", "to feel the responsibility", "to feel rage for the error", "emotional exhaustion", and " Feel not give good attention ". It is established that the responsibility is the greater experience that new nurses have in Tenerife within the work and professional context, which leads to emotional exhaustion.

The present article investigates into the world of those who live a process of bereavement and how beliefs, chance, and nature interweave to form a network of meanings that adds humanity to the process of living. The paper addresses the reconstruction of meanings in bereavement and in understanding the process. The reconstruction of meanings allows the mourners to remake a new changing world that has led to the loss. We, therefore, seek to understand what happens when a series of events reveal the adaptive meaning of new beliefs and the self-understanding of the loss, providing faithful explanations narrated by those who have lived it. Many events are part of stories of parents who lost children, and some events by themselves are considered extraordinary, giving sense to the characters, the story, and the consequences in a different and special way. We call these events “coincidences,” which have an effect and power, and transcend the meanings of what has been, surpassing the emotional or intellectual by the confluence of events and meaning, that of Carl G. Jung called “Synchronicity”.

Objective: To deepen the experience of the graduated nurses from the University of La Laguna between 2009 and 2014 regarding responsibility, insecurity and fear of error in the labor context of Tenerife (Spain). Methodology: A qualitative research is carried out with hermeneutical phenomenological approach through discourse analysis, having used as a data collection tool the semi-structured interview. Nineteen nurses participate, randomly selected and for convenience. Results: The main category is “do”. It is established as the main category of the study. Of the same the following subcategories are broken down: “to make a mistake”; “Different mistakes”; “Medication errors”; “Work overload errors; “To cause death”; “Recognize mistakes and learn from them” and “act wisely”. Discussion and conclusions: The meanings of the experiences are centered on making a possible mistake and its consequences. The experiences referred by the nurse with respect to responsibility are attributed fundamentally to being able to perform an adequate praxis in their work, being aware that they deal with people for it is an experience that brings much meaning to the nurse once it begins to work.

Resumen Este estudio cualitativo de enfoque fenomenológico, engloba las investigaciones del duelo sobre las narrativas de una muestra de cuarenta y cinco padres residentes en Canarias que perdieron hijos. En particular, profundiza en como la continuidad de vínculos y la dimensión espiritual, que mantienen conectados a madres y padres con sus hijos fallecidos se construye y manifiesta. Se explora desde el análisis discursivo, como la continuidad de vínculos con los hijos fallecidos configura en los padres la elaboración de significados personales, que se complementan y refuerzan en el seno del grupo cultural al que pertenecen, conformando una memoria duradera. De modo que madres y padres, además de estar apoyados en su fe en la elaboración de sentido, lo están por las conexiones que establecen con quienes comparten el dolor por la pérdida y con quienes desarrollan rituales y reconstruyen nuevas narrativas socioculturales, las cuales les ayudan a mantener la continuidad de vínculos con sus hijos fallecidos, al integrar ese vínculo en la realidad social de su comunidad a medida que avanzan en el proceso de duelo.

Se presenta la cartografía forestal de la Provincia de Huelva, realizada entre 1941–1951, en hojas municipales, por Manuel Martín Bolaños, y recientemente digitalizada por el Centro de Investigación del Eucalipto, de la Universidad de Huelva, una importante aportación documental para los trabajos geográficos sobre la provincia. Los valores de esta cartografía, hasta ahora inédita, son diversos. En primer lugar, sus elevados detalle y rigurosidad. En segundo, su fecha, anterior al vuelo americano de 1956, lo que permite retrotraer el análisis de la evolución del paisaje onubense. Finalmente, y en relación con lo anterior, los mapas son anteriores a la fuerte expansión de las repoblaciones, lo que permite aclarar, a partir de datos fehacientes, la tradicional polémica acerca de sobre qué formaciones vegetales se produjeron. Ese estudio se ha realizado mediante superposición de coberturas cartográficas. Su conclusión más relevante, en este sentido, es que, aunque hubo casos de sustitución de arbolado autóctono (Quercus) por las repoblaciones, éste ocupó en general terrenos forestales desarbolados. Mención aparte merece el caso de los Baldíos de Niebla, cuya labranza era un recurso para los jornaleros pobres en años de escasez, que fueron intensamente repoblados, con el conflicto que ello introdujo y que dio lugar a la producción de incendios intencionados.

Resumen El presente trabajo se engloba en la investigación cualitativa, desde el paradigma hermenéutico-fenomenológico. Realizado desde un análisis narrativo de los textos y las conversaciones compartidas con Benito a lo largo de los últimos años, incorpora y analiza los textos escritos y relatados como testimonios, en términos de experiencias sentidas, manifestadas y vividas, de modo que sitúa a las categorías explicativas en un marco más amplio que se haya inserto en la continuidad de vínculos con el hijo fallecido. El camino del duelo que nos acerca Benito profundiza, por un lado, en las ideas asociadas al sinsentido y el dolor por la ausencia del hijo fallecido, y por otro transita entre el plano de vivir, recordar, trascender y realizar determinadas prácticas socioculturales que le permiten seguir conectado con su hijo Josué, fallecido a consecuencia de un accidente de tráfico. Todo en un escenario en el que las narrativas revelan la naturaleza de los encuentros de conexión y de interacción.

Resumen En el presente ensayo se ha tenido como objetivo principal mostrar qué vivencias o percepciones tienen las enfermeras al cuidar a un ser humano en la etapa final de su vida. Los autores apoyándose en diversas publicaciones, describen que para la enfermera la muerte de un paciente supone un hecho complejo y drástico en su vida presentándose en la profesional sentimientos de tristeza, impotencia o rabia entre otros. El proceso de morir no está aislado del contexto sociocultural del paciente ni de la profesional. Se requiere de mejoras en la competencia profesional de los profesionales para afrontar la etapa final de la vida, ya que no existe suficiente preparación a nivel emocional y asistencial porque el morir no ha sido suficientemente abordado ni se ha tenido en cuenta lo que siente la enfermera.

Resumen: La neuropatía periférica diabética (NPD) es una de las complicaciones más comunes y problemáticas de la diabetes mellitus puesto que supone la principal causa de úlceras y amputaciones en miembros inferiores. Como resultado de la primera fase del estudio NEUDIACAN® no se detectó ningún procedimiento validado para la valoración de la NPD entre los profesionales sanitarios de Atención Primaria del Servicio Canario de la Salud. Por ello, se procedió a realizar una búsqueda en la literatura científica de algún sistema de valoración, con el fin de encontrar algún instrumento como una escala, test, procedimiento o protocolo que estuviera validado para uso enfermero y que cumpliera características que le permitiese ser aplicado en el ámbito de la atención primaria para prevenir la aparición de complicaciones como el pie diabético.

Introducción y objetivos: El fracaso renal agudo (FRA) es una complicación frecuente tras la cirugía cardiaca y las intervenciones percutáneas coronarias cuya aparición empeora el pronóstico de manera marcada. En los últimos años se han identificado nuevos biomarcadores precoces de FRA, pero aún quedan muchos aspectos importantes por resolver. Klotho es una proteína pleiotrópica que actúa como un factor paracrino y endocrino en múltiples órganos. En diversos modelos animales de FRA se ha demostrado niveles disminuidos de Klotho renal. No se ha publicado ningún estudio en el que se haya probado Klotho como marcador precoz de FRA en humanos. El objetivo de este trabajo es investigar la utilidad de la determinación de Klotho en orina para el diagnóstico precoz del FRA en pacientes con síndrome coronario agudo o fallo cardiaco sometidos a cirugía cardiaca o angiografía coronaria. Métodos: Se midió Klotho urinario 12 horas tras la intervención en 60 pacientes ingresados en la unidad de cuidados intensivos por síndrome coronario agudo o fallo cardiaco secundarios a enfermedad coronaria o valvular y a los que se realizó angiografía coronaria (30 pacientes) o cirugía cardiaca de recambio valvular o bypass (30 pacientes). El criterio de valoración primario fue la aparición de FRA según la clasificación RIFLE. Los niveles de Klotho humano se midieron utilizando un ensayo ELISA. Resul**tados: No encontramos diferencias en los niveles de Klotho en orina entre los pacientes que desarrollaron FRA y aquellos que no. Además, no había correlación significativa entre niveles de klotho en orina y presencia de FRA. Conc**lusión: Klotho urinario medido por ELISA no parece ser un buen candidato para ser usado como biomarcador precoz de FRA.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication after cardiac surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions which markedly worsens prognosis. In recent years, new early biomarkers of AKI have been identified, but many important aspects still remain to be solved. Klotho is a pleiotropic protein that acts as a paracrine and endocrine factor in multiple organs. Reduced renal Klotho levels have been show in several animal models of AKI. No study has been published in which Klotho was tested in humans as an early marker of AKI. The aim of this work is to assess the usefulness of measuring urinary Klotho for the early diagnosis of AKI in patients with acute coronary syndrome or heart failure undergoing cardiac surgery or coronary angiography. Methods. Urinary Klotho was measured 12 hours after intervention in 60 patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit with acute coronary syndrome or heart failure secondary to coronary or valvular conditions, who underwent coronary angiography (30 patients) or cardiac bypass surgery or heart valve replacement (30 patients). The primary endpoint used was the onset of AKI according to the RIFLE classification system. Human Klotho levels were measured using an ELISA assay. Results: We found no differences in urinary Klotho levels between AKI patients and those who did not develop AKI. Moreover, there was not significant correlation between urinary Klotho levels and the presence of AKI. Conclusion. Urinary Klotho measured by ELISA does not seem to be a good candidate to be used as an early biomarker of AKI.

RESUMEN El presente trabajo aborda el entendimiento de los conceptos tiempo, recuerdo y construcción de la memoria como artefacto cultural y sobre todo como resultado de relaciones de poder. Revisadas las diferentes maneras de entender el tiempo (lineal y progresivo, tipológico, intersubjetivo, circular, tiempo de los sueños), proponemos un entendimiento del tiempo a partir la comprensión de una nueva simultaneidad, nuestra coevalidad en el sentido planteado por Fabian. Pero que además debe partir del análisis de las relaciones de poder inherentes a las nuevas formas de experimentar el tiempo. Sólo dentro de un marco de respeto y reflexión, pero crítico del poder en acción y de nuestras propias epistemologías, podremos comprender los tiempos múltiples y simultáneos que se están dando dentro de nuestro propio tiempo y que lo hacen más fascinante de estudiar y de vivir.

Introducción: El inicio de la profesión enfermera se vive de una forma dura. Además las instituciones sanitarias contratan a las enfermeras sin tener en cuenta su formación o experiencia. Es necesario que exista un entorno donde pueda trabajar de forma segura la nueva enfermera. Objetivo: comprender, desde el punto de vista de las enfermeras, las mejoras que se pueden hacer para facilitar la incorporación laboral. Material y método: Se trata de un estudio cualitativo fenomenológico hermenéutico mediante análisis de discurso. La herramienta de recogida de datos es la entrevista semiestructurada. Se toma como población de estudio a las enfermeras egresadas de la Universidad de La Laguna entre 2009 y 2014, con una muestra de n=13 participantes, habiendo comenzado a trabajar en instituciones sanitarias de Tenerife. Resultados: las categorías establecidas son "tutorización" "período de adaptación" "trabajar en unidades ya conocidas" "problemas para implantar el período de adaptación" y "especialidad". Discusión y conclusiones: Es necesario encontrar fórmulas para mejorar la incorporación de las nuevas enfermeras a los puestos de trabajo como la tutorización o los períodos de adaptación.

Objetivo general. Comprender las vivencias de las enfermeras en su paso de estudiante a profesional al comenzar a trabajar en instituciones sanitarias de Tenerife. Introducción. En el paso de estudiante a profesional las enfermeras presentan el llamado reality shock al encontrar contrastes entre la realidad laboral y las ideas de la profesión. Esta vivencia implica repercusiones emocionales. Material y método. Estudio cualitativo con enfoque fenomenológico hermenéutico. La población de estudio son las enfermeras egresadas de la Universidad de La Laguna entre 2009 y 2014 y que comienzan a trabajar en instituciones sanitarias en Tenerife. Se toma al azar una muestra de n=20. Se utiliza una entrevista semiestructurada como herramienta de investigación. Resultados. Se plantearon las siguientes ocho categorías: (1) paso de estudiante a profesional; (2) Una experiencia estresante; (3) tomar decisiones; (4) tener una experiencia laboral previa; (5) falta de preparación para el mundo laboral; (6) choque con la realidad; (7) choque desde la carrera; (8) la realidad es distinta. Conclusiones. Las participantes manifiestan encontrar diferencias entre las ideas que tienen de su formación con la realidad laboral, ya incluso desde la carrera. Las cargas de trabajo o la rotación de servicios incluyen en ello, además de la inseguridad, la vivencia de la responsabilidad y la falta de preparación como profesionales. Relevancia para la práctica clínica. Es necesario de cara al futuro apoyar a las enfermeras noveles con programas de orientación y de tutorización por parte de las instituciones para las que trabajan.

Considering the body as a privileged instrument of care does not only imply mentioning the participating senses but rediscovering sensitivity. Rediscovering what it feels, searching what others feel and clarifying what one feels. Walking a personal path that goes beyond using hands to handle, transport, lift, take, inject, press, caress, massage, etc.

La antropología de la muerte, nacida en la prehistoria, etnología, historia, sociología, y donde los pilares de estudio han sido la identidad, la alteridad y la pluralidad, mediante una no siempre clara definición del objeto de estudio, ha estado indiscutiblemente condicionada por el marcado avance en el rigor de los diseños de investigación, y ha aspirado a afirmarse como auténticamente científica, por ello que dichos elementos no hayan sido ajenos al campo de estudio de la Tanatología.

Este artículo explora a través de las historias narrativas de un grupo de 20 madres y padres, que perdieron a sus hijos, en Tenerife (Canarias - España), mediante un acercamiento a la investigación hermenéutico fenomenológica, de corte cualitativo a través de las historias que ordenan y resignifican sus vidas en pareja a lo largo del tiempo, desde el análisis de sus discursos narrativos, obtenidos mediante el empleo de entrevistas y la observación participante de padres y madres miembros de grupos de duelo, y la experiencia personal expresada del duelo. Contrastados a la luz de las experiencias nuevas, desde el sentimiento de la adquisición de nuevos valores y la construcción de nuevos significados “que su hijo” propició en ellos y que se refuerzan con el paso de tiempo, y suponen un reto en la construcción de la imagen de sí mismos y de la pareja.SummaryThis paper explores through narrative stories of a group of 20 parents who lost their children, in Tenerife (Canary Islands - Spain), by an approach to research, hermeneutic phenomenological qualitative cutting deepens as stories sorted and redefine their lives as a couple over time, by analyzing their narratives, obtained through the use of interviews and individual and group intervention of parents grieving group members, work and lived experience of grief. Pennycress (Thlaspi arvense) is an emerging feedstock for biofuel production because of its high seed oil content enriched in erucic acid. A combination of transcriptomic and proteomic tools was used to characterize the dynamics and relative abundance of the major oil body related proteins in the Pennycress seed. Our analysis identified 21 oleosins (OLE), 6 oil body associated proteins (OBAPs), 3 SEIPINS, 3 caleosins, 3 stereolisins and 3 lipid droplet associated proteins (LDAPs) in the Pennycress genome, showing high homology with respect to Arabidopsis or rapeseed. RNA-Seq analysis on five Pennycress seed maturation stages showed that most OLE and OBAP genes increased their expression with seed maturation, coinciding with the highest accumulation of triacylglycerol. Western-blot analysis of the OLE2 protein during seed maturation confirmed this result. However, OLE5 and SEIPIN1 genes showed higher expression at the early stages of seed maturation, suggesting that both proteins could be particularly involved in the initial stages of oil body formation. Proteomic analysis on oil body enriched fractions from the YELLOW and MATURE late seed maturation stages showed that all oleosin proteins were highly abundant in oil bodies. Caleosins and stereolisins were also highly abundant. Our results indicate the existence of differential expression patterns of oil body related genes during Pennycress seed maturation, suggesting different roles of these proteins for the formation and stabilization of oil bodies in the Pennycress seed. Continuing Bonds among grieving men from Costa Rica and Spain were compared, with the primary hypothesis that there would be significant differences between the two groups. A descriptive, comparative, and cross-sectional research study was conducted. Non-probability and convenience sampling was employed, involving 227 grieving men who completed an online questionnaire comprising sociodemographic data, mediators of mourning, and the Continuing Bonds Scale. The results did not reveal significant differences in Continuing Bonds expressions. However, upon controlling for the interaction between degree of kinship with the deceased person, notable differences emerged in Continuing Bonds and internalized and externalized Continuing Bonds (p < 0.05). The influence of sociocultural factors in each country on Continuing Bonds expressions is considered. The findings could support the development of strategies centered on grieving men, Continuing Bonds, and their specific needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Empathy and assertiveness are two essential soft skills for health professionals such as nurses or physiotherapists. Both professions are characterised by their contribution to preserving and improving health and human care, and for their vocation of service. One of the achievements of the training is the voluntary, conscious, and individually inspired career choice. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the empathy, assertiveness, and care vocational levels among undergraduate students enrolled in Nursing and Physiotherapy Degree programmes and to investigate the relationship between these soft skills and the care vocation. Methods: A cross-sectional study of nursing and physiotherapy students was conducted in the 2023/2024 academic year. The Interpersonal Reactivity Index scales for empathy, the Rathus test for assertiveness, and the "Vocation of Service for Human Care" questionnaire were used as study tools. Finally, 226 nursing and physiotherapy students participated after providing informed consent, excluding those on national or international exchange programmes. Results: The empathy, assertiveness, and vocation of service for human care of the students was found to be acceptable. Significant differences were observed according to the gender variable or career among the students, with female students presenting better results in empathy subscales or vocation (p < 0.05). Students who were working or had clinical experience in other professions scored lower on the empathy personal distress subscale (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Both nursing and physiotherapy students demonstrate satisfactory levels of empathy, assertiveness, and vocation for human care. However, gender and previous work experience notably influence these scores. It would be beneficial to conduct long-term studies with educational interventions to train and develop empathy, assertiveness, and vocation for human care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The prevalence of people with obesity is increasing worldwide, facing challenges in terms of discrimination and prejudice across all settings, including healthcare. Objective: The objective of this review is to compare and synthesize recent scientific literature regarding nurses' behaviors and attitudes toward patients with obesity. Methods: A systematized methodology was employed, conducting a literature search of studies published in the bibliographic resources (Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, Web of Science, and Scopus from 2018 to 2023); using specific terms combined with the Boolean operators, AND and OR. Inclusion criteria: Quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research conducted on nurses and/or nursing students in a context focused on the care of adult patients with obesity. Critical appraisal tools from the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) were used to evaluate the included studies, and their level of evidence was also determined. Results: Initially, the search yielded 166 articles, of which 14 were included in this review. The results found focused on the use of scales and tools heterogeneous to each other. The findings can be categorized into two main areas: studies investigating interventions aimed at reducing negative behaviors related to weight bias and prejudice, and studies focusing on assessing these attitudes. The evidence points in a consistent direction: nurses exhibit negative attitudes toward patients with obesity. Conclusions: The need for multilevel strategies, from clinical to academic training, to address this challenge is highlighted, alongside the development of research that complements the current evidence with a deeper and more detailed understanding of this phenomenon. AbstractThis qualitative study addresses a gap in knowledge regarding men’s experience of the grieving process. Our limited understanding of the topic hinders the development of targeted support services. The study analyzes the meanings of continuing bonds for bereaved men in Costa Rica. It conducted semi-structured interviews with twelve participants; these were guided by a framework focusing on three key areas: mediators of mourning, continuing bonds, and meaning reconstruction. An analysis revealed five themes: loss emblems, mourners’ ecology, memory landscapes, sense-based realities, and symbolic images. These themes suggest that the meanings attributed to continuing bonds facilitated the participants’ personal growth, including the adoption of new values and personality changes, ultimately aiding adaptation to loss. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of men’s grieving process, provide information on the development of gender-specific interventions for men and highlight the need for further research. Background: Ukrainian refugees fleeing the conflict between Russia and Ukraine may face significant challenges to their physical, psycho-emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. Aim: To identify the health needs of Ukrainian refugees seen in primary care facilities in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Methods: A mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were obtained through a descriptive analysis of health records, while qualitative data were collected via focus group interviews and thematic analysis of testimonies. Results: The sample comprised 59 individuals (45.4% of all patients seen). Eight participants from five family groups took part in the focus group. The typical profile of a Ukrainian refugee in the Canary Islands is female (79.7%), relatively young, with a high socio-cultural background, generally in good health, travelling alone or with her minor children. The main reasons for consultation were routine health check-ups and control blood tests. The NANDA-I nursing diagnoses indicated a need for psycho-emotional care, with the most prevalent being Risk for Relocation Stress Syndrome (27.1%); Interrupted Family Processes, Disturbed sleep pattern, Risk for Impaired Resilience (13.6% each); and Anxiety (11.9%). Participants rated the healthcare system positively, but language barriers and long waiting times for access to specific services were noted as limitations. The primary social demands include seeking employment, learning the language, and increasing support groups among Ukrainians themselves. Conclusions: This study underscores the need for a tailored approach to refugee care, considering their unique circumstances and needs.
