We investigate the thermodynamics of the anisotropic magnetic $\rm AdS_5$ black brane solution found by D'Hoker and Kraus arXiv:0908.3875. This solution is the gravity dual of a strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills plasma in ${\mathbb R}^{3,1}$, with temperature $T$, in the presence of a magnetic field ${\cal B}$. Following the procedure of holographic renormalisation we calculate the Gibbs free energy and the holographic stress tensor of the conformal plasma. We evaluate several thermodynamic quantities including the magnetisation, the anisotropic pressures and the speeds of sound. Our results are consistent with an RG flow from a perturbed $\rm AdS_5$ black brane at small ${\cal B}/T^2$ to a $\rm \bf BTZ \times {\mathbb R}^2$ black brane at large ${\cal B}/T^2$. We also perform a phenomenological analysis where we compare the thermodynamics of a magnetised conformal plasma against the lattice QCD results for the thermodynamics of the magnetised quark-gluon plasma., V1 40 pages, 11 figures. A finite temperature extension of the effective holographic models for QCD (EHQCD), proposed in Ref.[1], is investigated in the present work. EHQCD models are characterized by two parameters, the conformal dimension of the relevant operator that deforms the CFT and the associated coupling. We find that black hole solutions appear at temperatures higher than some temperature $T_{min}$ and can be categorized in two classes: large and small black holes. A large black hole is thermally stable and it is therefore interpreted as the gravity dual of a non-conformal plasma. A small black hole, on the other hand, is thermally unstable. We show that thermodynamic quantities such as the entropy density $s$, specific heat $C_V$, and speed of sound $c_s$ are sensitive to the model parameters. We investigate perturbations of the black hole solutions and calculate the viscosity coefficients of the corresponding dual non-conformal plasma. For the shear viscosity, we confirm that the ratio $\eta/s$ is given by the universal result $1/4\pi$. For the bulk viscosity, the ratio $\zeta/s$ varies with the temperature, displaying a rapid growth close to $T_{min}$, and it is sensitive to the model parameters. We compare our results for the thermodynamic quantities with the lattice $SU(N_C)$ results and find that they are compatible as long as the coupling is fixed appropriately as a function of the conformal dimension. We investigate the effect of a non-zero magnetic field on the chiral condensate using a holographic QCD approach. We extend the model proposed by Iatrakis, Kiritsis and Paredes in arXiv:1010.1364 that realises chiral symmetry breaking dynamically from 5d tachyon condensation. We calculate the chiral condensate, magnetisation and susceptibilities for the confined and deconfined phases. The model leads, in the probe approximation, to magnetic catalysis of chiral symmetry breaking in both confined and deconfined phases. In the chiral limit, $m_q=0$, we find that in the deconfined phase a sufficiently strong magnetic field leads to a second order phase transition from the chirally restored phase to a chirally broken phase. The transition becomes a crossover as the quark mass increases. Due to a scaling in the temperature, the chiral transition will also be interpreted as a transition in the temperature for fixed magnetic field. We elaborate on the relationship between the chiral condensate, magnetisation and the (magnetic) free energy density. We investigate consistent charged black hole solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) equations that are asymptotically AdS. The solutions are gravity duals to phases of a non-conformal plasma at finite temperature and density. For the dilaton we take a quadratic ansatz leading to linear confinement at zero temperature and density. We consider a grand canonical ensemble, where the chemical potential is fixed, and find a rich phase diagram involving the competition of small and large black holes. The phase diagram contains a critical line and a critical point similar to the van der Waals-Maxwell liquid-gas transition. As the critical point is approached, we show that the trace anomaly in the plasma phases vanishes signifying the restoration of conformal symmetry in the fluid. We find that the heat capacity and charge susceptibility diverge as $C_V \propto (T-T^c)^{-\alpha}$ and $\chi \propto (T-T^c)^{-\gamma}$ at the critical point with universal critical exponents $\alpha=\gamma=2/3$. Our results suggest a description of the thermodynamics near the critical point in terms of catastrophe theories. The kernel is obtained using effective field theory inspired by Regge theory of a 5-d string theory. It describes the exchange of higher spin fields in the graviton Regge trajectory that are dual to glueball states of twist two. For a specific holographic QCD model we describe Deep Inelastic Scattering in the Regge limit of low Bjorken x, finding good agreement with experimental data from HERA. The observed rise of the effective pomeron intercept, as the size of the probe decreases, is reproduced by considering the first four pomeron trajectories. In the case of soft probes, relevant to total cross sections, the leading hard pomeron trajectory is suppressed, such that in this kinematical region we reproduce an intercept of 1.09 compatible with the QCD soft pomeron data. In the spectral region of positive Maldelstam variable t the first two pomeron trajectories are consistent with current expectations for the glueball spectrum from lattice simulations. We extend the two-flavor hard-wall holographic model of Erlich, Katz, Son and Stephanov [Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 95}, 261602 (2005)] to four flavors to incorporate strange and charm quarks. The model incorporates chiral and flavor symmetry breaking and provides a reasonable description of masses and weak decay constants of a variety of scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector strange and charmed mesons. In particular, we examine flavor symmetry breaking in the strong couplings of the $\rho$ meson to the charmed $D$ and $D^{*}$ mesons. We also compute electromagnetic form factors of the $\pi$, $\rho$, $K$, $K^*$, $D$ and $D^*$ mesons. We study the graviton Regge trajectory in Holographic QCD as a model for high energy scattering processes dominated by soft pomeron exchange. This is done by considering spin J fields from the closed string sector that are dual to glueball states of even spin and parity. In particular, we construct a model that governs the analytic continuation of the spin J field equation to the region of real J < 2, which includes the scattering domain of negative Maldelstam variable t. The model leads to approximately linear Regge trajectories and is compatible with the measured values of 1.08 for the intercept and 0.25 GeV$^{-2}$ for the slope of the soft pomeron. The intercept of the secondary pomeron trajectory is in the same region of the subleading trajectories, made of mesons, proposed by Donnachie and Landshoff, and should therefore be taken into account., 7 pages, 5 figures. We investigate the leptonic decay constants of the pion and its excitations with a 5-d holographic model for quantum chromodynamics. We prove numerically that the leptonic decay constants of the excited states of the pion vanish in the chiral limit when chiral symmetry is dynamically broken. This nontrivial result is in agreement with a solid prediction of quantum chromodynamics and is based on a generalized Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner relationship involving the decay constants and masses of the excited states of the pion. We also obtain an extended partially conserved axial-vector current relation that includes the fields of the excited states of the pion, a relation that was proposed long ago in the context of current algebra., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the thermodynamics of the flavour sector of the Sakai-Sugimoto model in the presence of a magnetic field. Renormalizing the euclidean Dirac-Born-Infeld action in the antipodal limit, we find for the confined and deconfined phases positive contributions to the pressures that grow with the magnetic field. We also obtain positive magnetic susceptibilities indicating a paramagnetic behaviour of quarks. Using these results we estimate a \lambda^2/N_c correction to the deconfinement temperature that decreases as a function of the magnetic field., Comment: V4 1+20 pages, 6 figures, references and one figure added. We investigate the effect of a magnetic field on the vacuum of low-temperature QCD at large-N_c in the presence of a chiral chemical potential, using the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model. Above some critical chemical potential we find an instability, which triggers a decay of the homogeneous vacuum to a non-homogeneous configuration with a spiral form, which we construct explicitly. We find that this decay is suppressed for sufficiently large magnetic field, and determine the critical strength. We find that the new vacuum does not exhibit the chiral magnetic effect. This is related to the way the chiral chemical potential is introduced. We extend our investigation of resonance production in the Sakai-Sugimoto model to the case of negative parity baryon resonances. Using holographic techniques we extract the generalized Dirac and Pauli baryon form factors as well as the helicity amplitudes for these baryonic states. Identifying the first negative parity resonance with the experimentally observed S_{11}(1535), we find reasonable agreement with experimental data from the JLab-CLAS collaboration.
