Debates on the philosophical interpretations of quantum physics have motivated a renewed interest in how secondary and lower undergraduate students interpret quantum phenomena. In an attempt to contribute to this effort, this paper examines the dynamics of perspec tive in quantum physics in the context of teacher education. The goal of the study is to investigate how students (N = 36) from a Master's Degree in Secondary Education Teacher Training in Spain negotiate perspective as they participate in small-group discussions of quantum physics topics. This study focuses on the wave-particle duality, superposition of states, and the calculation of probabilities for two-state systems. The method of research is grounded in sociocultural discourse analysis and focuses on the properties of the utter ance as outlined by Bakhtin. Analysis shows that the subjects of the study adopt multiple perspectives when representing the referents of quantum theory. We also find that students' perspective change is usually followed by a change in the referentially semantic content. Finally, it is suggested that some perspectives are more appropriate than others depending on the task at hand and the learning goals previously defined for instruction.

Nos últimos anos, o debate sobre questões de gênero tem se tornado foco de interesse da pesquisa em educação em ciências no Brasil. No entanto, existe uma escassez de artigos na literatura nacional que apresentem uma base teórica para os estudos de gênero na educação em ciências. Assim, apresentamos neste trabalho as maneiras de conhecer das mulheres, segundo a abordagem de Mary F. Belenky e suas colaboradoras, como possível referencial teórico para os estudos nessa área. São delineadas cinco perspectivas através das quais as mulheres tiram conclusões sobre verdade, conhecimento e realidade: o Silêncio; o Conhecimento recebido; o Conhecimento subjetivo; o Conhecimento processual; e o Conhecimento construído. Após descrever as cinco posições epistemológicas, mostramos como o estudo dessas autoras tem sido utilizado na pesquisa em educação em ciências e como suas ideias podem contribuir para o planejamento de intervenções em sala de aula que busquem promover um ensino de ciências que seja mais equitativo com relação ao gênero.

Este artigo propõe usar a Inferência à Melhor Explicação (IME) como forma de abordar aspectos da natureza da ciência, por meio de controvérsias explicativas históricas. A Inferência à Melhor Explicação é um tema de discussão na epistemologia que aborda a justificação e racionalidade do conhecimento. Seu foco é o estudo das condições que levaram uma explicação a ser considerada superior a suas concorrentes em um contexto específico. Neste trabalho, essa perspectiva é adaptada para analisar o conflito entre explicações científicas em momentos específicos da história da ciência. O foco é problematizar os fundamentos epistêmicos e culturais que sustentaram a defesa de explicações propostas ao longo do curso do episódio histórico sob discussão. Um dos objetivos é que essa discussão possa ser feita em contextos como a educação básica e a formação de professores, de modo a evitar as posições extremas da oposição entre concepções estruturalistas e relativistas sobre a ciência. Para isso, são apresentados alguns conceitos-chave da IME, seguida de uma proposta de como adaptá-los para o uso em contexto educacional. A título de ilustração, a perspectiva é empregada ao episódio histórico da explicação do efeito fotoelétrico, durante as primeiras décadas do século XX. No episódio em questão, são abordadas questões como: o papel da comunidade científica na avaliação do conhecimento científico, a indeterminação das teorias científicas pelas evidências disponíveis, e a influência de interesses pessoas na avaliação de teorias científicas.

Explaining is one of the most important everyday practices in science education. In this article, we examine how scientific explanations could serve as cultural tools for members of a group of pre-service physics teachers. Specifically, we aim at their use of explanations about forces of inertia in non-inertial frames of reference. A basic assumption of our study is that explanatory tools (e.g., typical explanations learned) shape the ways we think and speak about the world. Drawing on the theory of mediated action, analysis illustrates three major claims on scientific explanations: (1) explaining is an act of actively responding to explanations presented by others (and not only to evidence itself); (2) the actual experience of explaining involves the enactment of power and authority; (3) resistance (not acknowledging an explanation as one’s own) might be a constitutive part of learning how to explain (hence, teachers could approach scientific explanation in a less dogmatic way). These assertions expand the possibilities of dialogue between studies of scientific explanations and the social sciences. Implications for science teaching and research in science education are presented.

Resumo Explicar é uma das práticas discursivas mais importantes da ciência e do seu ensino. Nas últimas décadas, este tema passou a receber atenção de legislações educacionais, professores e pesquisadores, embora pesquisas sobre o uso de explicações no ensino de ciências destaquem a dificuldade de definir este conceito. Neste trabalho, revisamos o conceito explicação a partir de três distinções básicas: explicações e narrativas; explicações e argumentos; explicações científicas e explicações escolares. Este trabalho busca primeiramente trazer clareza para os conceitos aqui discutidos, enfatizando que explicações, argumentos e narrativas são elementos importantes, porém distintos da comunicação da sala de aula. Limites para a aproximação entre práticas explicativas com argumentos e narrativas são discutidos. O trabalho aponta também a importância do tema para o ensino de ciências e o baixo número de trabalhos dedicados a esta questão entre pesquisadores brasileiros. Abstract Explaining is among the most important discursive practice for science and its teaching. In the last decades this topic received attention from official documents, teachers and researchers. However, research in science teaching highlights the difficulty in defining this concept. In this paper we review the concept of explanation from three basic perspectives: explanations and narratives; explanation and arguments; scientific explanation and school science explanation. This work seeks firstly to bring clarity to the above-mentioned concepts, highlighting the fact that explanation, arguments and narratives are important but distinct elements of science classroom discourse. Limits in explanatory practices in relation to arguments and narratives are discussed. It also shows the importance of the topic for science teaching and the lack of research on explanations in Brazilian literature.

Diversos estudos em psicologia, antropologia e sociologia desenvolveram a concepção na qual a mente é vista como algo que “se estende além da pele”. O presente trabalho apresenta, no âmbito do ensino de física quântica, uma investigação sobre a distribuição social da mente a partir da análise de uma atividade desenvolvida com um grupo de graduandos em Física, mediada por um interferômetro virtual de Mach-Zehnder. Nossa análise mostrou que, nos debates mais polêmicos, a construção de significados na atividade surgiu por meio de um processo complexo de interanimação de vozes, no qual é impossível determinar quem solucionou o problema, assinalando um ou outro indivíduo isoladamente – isto é, foi o grupo, enquanto “sistema”, que desempenhou tal função no plano intermental. Several studies in psychology, anthropology and sociology have developed a notion in which the mind is viewed as something that “extends beyond the skin”. This paper presents, in the context of quantum physics learning, a study of the social distribution of mind through the analysis of a task carried out by a group of undergraduate physics students, mediated by a virtual Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Our analysis has shown that, for most controversial debates, the meaning-making in the task came from a complex process of interanimation of voices in which it is impossible to determinate who has solved the problem by assigning one or other individual alone – i.e., the group as a “system” has played this role on the instrumental plane.

O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre a fala privada em uma tarefa conduzida por um grupo de licenciandos em Física e mediada por um interferômetro virtual de Mach-Zehnder. O objetivo desse estudo é verificar a ocorrência da fala privada entre adultos e analisar como esse modo de mediação é utilizado em uma situação de resolução de problemas envolvendo conceitos de Física Quântica. Os resultados de uma análise discursiva pautada na perspectiva sociocultural mostraram que a fala privada surgiu da interação dos estudantes com as ferramentas culturais fornecidas pelo cenário sociocultural (roteiro e software). Esse modo de mediação foi utilizado no ordenamento da própria ação, assim como no planejamento de novas ações em direção a solução dos problemas. This paper presents a study on private speech in a task conducted by a group of undergraduate physics students and mediated by a virtual Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The aim of this study is to verify the occurrence of private speech among adults and to analyze how this means of mediation is used in a solving-problem situation involving quantum physics concepts. The results of an analysis of discourse based on socio-cultural perspectives showed that private speech came from interaction between students and cultural tools provided by the socio-cultural setting (guide and software). This mean of mediation is used in the ordering of own actions, as well as in the planning of new actions in solving- problems situations.

For many students, the conceptual learning of quantum mechanics can be rather painful owing to the counter-intuitive nature of quantum phenomena. In order to enhance students' understanding of the odd behaviour of photons and electrons, we introduce a computational simulation of the Mach–Zehnder interferometer, developed by our research group. An example of an instruction session based on the use of the virtual Mach–Zehnder interferometer is also presented.

Role-play is an interesting, although underexplored, way of teaching physics in high school. This paper presents a science-technology-society (STS) approach to the teaching of heat engines based on a role-play of the Industrial Revolution. Enacting the role-play, students are presented not only to scientific concepts, but also to the social and technological controversies of industrial development.

Most introductory physics courses rarely mention Newton's bucket experiment, missing the opportunity to discuss the very foundations of Newtonian mechanics. This paper presents a simple demonstration that simulates Mach's principle. It allows students to observe the concave shape of the water both from a stationary frame in the classroom and from a reference frame that spins with the bucket

No presente trabalho, apresentamos uma discussão sobre os postulados da física quântica a partir de uma “tradução” do formalismo matemático para uma linguagem “operacional” e que envolve uma discussão conceitual e fenomenológica. Os postulados operacionais são ilustrados com a ajuda de uma simulação computacional do interferômetro de Mach-Zehnder. In this paper, we present a discussion on the postulates of Quantum Mechanics by means of a “translation” of the mathematical formalism to an “operational” language, which involves a conceptual and phenomenological discussion. The operational postulates are illustrated by focusing on a computer simulation of Mach-Zehnder’s interferometer.

Este artigo apresenta uma introdução à aproximação sociocultural à mente, de James V. Wertsch. Um primeiro pressuposto da aproximação sociocultural é a noção de que a "ação mediada" é a unidade de análise. A partir dessa perspectiva, a ação humana tipicamente emprega ferramentas culturais, ou meios mediacionais, que são fornecidos por um cenário sociocultural particular. O uso concreto dessas ferramentas culturais envolve uma "tensão irredutível" entre agentes ativos e itens como computadores, livros, linguagem, entre outros. O objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar a aproximação sociocultural de Wertsch como possível referencial teórico para o ensino de ciências e para as pesquisas nessa área. This paper presents an introduction to the sociocultural approach to mind, as outlined by James V. Wertsch. A starting point for the sociocultural approach is the claim that it takes "mediated action" as unit of analysis. From this perspective, human action typically employs cultural tools, or mediational means, that are provided by a particular sociocultural setting. The concrete use of these cultural tools involves an "irreducible tension" between active agents and items such as computers, books, language, and others. The aim of this paper is to present Wertsch's sociocultural approach as a possible theoretical framework for science teaching and for research in this area.

In this paper, we introduce Vygotsky's ideas from the perspective of the American psychologist James V. Wertsch. We highlight three basic themes in Vygotsky's writings: (1) mediation; (2) social interaction; and (3) development. This study is motivated by some misinterpretations typically found in the literature, such as: social interaction as negotiation of meanings; teacher as knowledge mediator; textbook as more capable peer; development as the construction of new cognitive structures. Implications of this perspective for teaching and research in Physics teaching are discussed.

Esta pesquisa propõe a investigação do uso do Role Playing Game (RPG) no contexto educacional, como uma forma de facilitar o aprendizado de Física para os estudantes. O pressuposto principal para o uso do RPG é que ele pode funcionar como um ambiente para um ensinar física através de problemas abertos. Os problemas abertos são situações que necessitam de soluções, mas os indivíduos envolvidos não conhecem meios ou caminhos evidentes para obtê-las. Eles são úteis na física para conhecer para se conhecer as concepções dos alunos sobre conceitos estruturados cientificamente e também trabalhar significações diferentes dos problemas de lápis e papel. Foi elaborada uma aventura no sistema FATE. Este sistema genérico apresenta regras simples e facilita o processo de iniciação dos alunos ao RPG. Foram realizadas duas aplicações do RPG em contexto educacional, com estudantes em diferentes situações de ensino. Conclui-se que o RPG pode ser proveitoso como uma atividade paralela às aulas tradicionais e como um incentivador da problematização dos conceitos físicos para os alunos. This research proposes the investigation of Role Playing Games (RPG) in the educational context, as a way of facilitating the learning of physics for students. The main assumption for using RPGs is that they can function as a space for teaching based on ill-structured problems. Ill-structured problems are situations where a solution is needed, but the individuals involved do not know the obvious ways or means to get them. They are useful in physics in understanding students\' conceptions of scientifically structured concepts as well as working on different meanings for structured problems. An adventure was elaborated in the FATE system and two applications of RPGs in the educational context were made, with students in different teaching situations. It is concluded that role-playing can be useful as a parallel activity to traditional classes and as an incentive for the problematization of physical concepts for students.
