Solar energetic particle (SEP) observations from Suprathermal Ion Spectrograph (SIS) which is part of the Energetic Particle Detector (EPD) suite on board the Solar Orbiter (SolO) mission, provide an unprecedented opportunity to study the composition and evolution of SEPs close at the Sun and to understand where SEPs are accelerated at the Sun and when released from their sources to interplanetary space. In this study, we examine 3He-rich time periods that last for many days. These extended 3He-rich periods that observed by SIS are particularly interesting because this rare isotope of He is not abundant in the solar corona and events rich of 3He are usually associated with transient and small "impulsive" SEP events. First, we compile a catalogue of extended 3He-rich time periods that were observed during the first three years of SolO mission and we determined and registered their characteristics (duration, composition, etc.). We also examined the spacecraft’s magnetic connectivity during these time periods and the characteristics of the connected regions. We find that, during the extended 3He-rich time periods, SolO is stably magnetically connected to an active region(s) for most cases. The connectivity usually changes near the boundaries of the time periods so the connectivity to the source region is an important element for the observation of these 3He-rich time periods. The active region(s) where SolO is magnetically connected during the time periods are typically very productive of solar events (flares, jets, CMEs).

Coronal and interplanetary shock waves produced by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are major drivers of space-weather phenomena, inducing major changes in the heliospheric radiation environment and directly perturbing the near-Earth environment, including its magnetosphere. A better understanding of how these shock waves evolve from the corona to the interplanetary medium can therefore contribute to improving nowcasting and forecasting of space weather. Early warnings from these shock waves can come from radio measurements as well as coronagraphic observations that can be exploited to characterise the dynamical evolution of these structures. Our aim is to analyse the geometrical and kinematic properties of 32 CME shock waves derived from multi-point white-light and ultraviolet imagery taken by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SoHO), and Solar-Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) to improve our understanding of how shock waves evolve in 3D during the eruption of a CME. We use our catalogue to search for relations between the shock wave's kinematic properties and the flaring activity associated with the underlying genesis of the CME piston. Past studies have shown that shock waves observed from multiple vantage points can be aptly reproduced geometrically by simple ellipsoids. The catalogue of reconstructed shock waves provides the time-dependent evolution of these ellipsoidal parameters. From these parameters, we deduced the lateral and radial expansion speeds of the shocks evolving over time. We compared these kinematic properties with those obtained from a single viewpoint by SoHO in order to evaluate projection effects. We present an overview of the first ground-level enhancement (GLE) event of solar cycle 25, recorded on 28 October 2021 (GLE73), based on the available neutron monitor (NM) network observations and on data from near-Earth spacecraft (GOES, SOHO, SolO). The maximum increase was ~7.3% for DOMC (Dome C NM at Concordia station) and 5.4% for SOPO (South Pole) conventional NMs located on the Antarctic plateau. Bare (lead-free) NMs at the same sites detected a higher response (14.0% for DOMB and 6.6% for SOPB). The Fort Smith (FSMT) NM shows the earliest increase among the high-latitude NMs, indicating a moderate anisotropy in the first phase of the GLE event. The maximum rigidity of accelerated protons did not exceed 2.4 GV. We estimated the solar release time (SRT) of ≥1 GV protons into open magnetic field lines at ~15:40 UT. In-situ proton observations from near-Earth spacecraft were combined with the detection of a solar flare in soft X-rays (SXRs), a coronal mass ejection (CME), radio bursts and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) observations to identify the solar origin of the GLE. Around the ≥1 GV proton SRT the CME-driven shock was located at a height of ~2.33 Rs. The timing of the EUV wave evolution towards the field lines magnetically connected to Earth seem to be in good agreement with the inferred release time of ≥1 GV protons.

We investigate the orientation of the magnetic field deflections in switchbacks (SB) to determine if they are characterised by a possible preferential orientation. We compute the deflection angles of the magnetic field relative to the Parker spiral direction for encounters 1 to 9 of the PSP mission. We first characterize the distribution of these deflection angles for calm solar wind intervals, and assess the precision of the Parker model as a function of distance to the Sun. We then assume that the solar wind is composed of two populations, the background calm solar wind and the population of SB, characterized by larger fluctuations. We model the total distribution of deflection angles we observe in the solar wind as a weighed sum of two distinct normal distributions, each corresponding to one of the populations. We fit the observed data with our model using a MCMC algorithm and retrieve the most probable mean vector and covariance matrix coefficients of the two Gaussian functions, as well as the population proportion. We first observe that the accuracy of the spiral direction in the ecliptic is a function of radial distance, in a manner that is consistent with PSP being near the solar wind acceleration region. We then find that the fitted switchback population presents a systematic bias in its deflections compared to the calm solar wind population. This result holds for all encounters but E6, and regardless of the magnetic field main polarity. This implies a marked preferential orientation of SB in the clockwise direction in the ecliptic plane, and we discuss this result and its implications in the context of the existing switchback formation theories. Finally, we report the observation of a 12-hour patch of SB that systematically deflect in the same direction, so that the magnetic field vector tip within the patch deflects and returns to the Parker spiral within a given plane., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 4 pages of appendix

Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data recorded within a heliocentric radial distance of 0.3 AU have revealed a magnetic field dominated by Alfv\'enic structures that undergo large local variations or even reversals of the radial magnetic field. They are called magnetic switchbacks, they are consistent with folds in magnetic field lines within a same magnetic sector, and are associated with velocity spikes during an otherwise calmer background. They are thought to originate either in the low solar atmosphere through magnetic reconnection processes, or result from the evolution of turbulence or velocity shears in the expanding solar wind. In this work, we investigate the temporal and spatial characteristic scales of magnetic switchback patches. We define switchbacks as a deviation from the nominal Parker spiral direction and detect them automatically for PSP encounters 1, 2, 4 and 5. We focus in particular on a 5.1-day interval dominated by switchbacks during E5. We perform a wavelet transform of the solid angle between the magnetic field and the Parker spiral and find periodic spatial modulations with two distinct wavelengths, respectively consistent with solar granulation and supergranulation scales. In addition we find that switchback occurrence and spectral properties seem to depend on the source region of the solar wind rather than on the radial distance of PSP. These results suggest that switchbacks are formed in the low corona and modulated by the solar surface convection pattern., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Geomagnetic storms are an important aspect of space weather and can result in significant impacts on space- and ground-based assets. The majority of strong storms are associated with the passage of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) in the near-Earth environment. In many cases, these ICMEs can be traced back unambiguously to a specific coronal mass ejection (CME) and solar activity on the frontside of the Sun. Hence, predicting the arrival of ICMEs at Earth from routine observations of CMEs and solar activity currently makes a major contribution to the forecasting of geomagnetic storms. However, it is clear that some ICMEs, which may also cause enhanced geomagnetic activity, cannot be traced back to an observed CME, or, if the CME is identified, its origin may be elusive or ambiguous in coronal images. Such CMEs have been termed "stealth CMEs." In this review, we focus on these "problem" geomagnetic storms in the sense that the solar/CME precursors are enigmatic and stealthy. We start by reviewing evidence for stealth CMEs discussed in past studies. We then identify several moderate to strong geomagnetic storms (minimum Dst < -50 nT) in solar cycle 24 for which the related solar sources and/or CMEs are unclear and apparently stealthy. We discuss the solar and in situ circumstances of these events and identify several scenarios that may account for their elusive solar signatures. These range from observational limitations (e.g., a coronagraph near Earth may not detect an incoming CME if it is diffuse and not wide enough) to the possibility that there is a class of mass ejections from the Sun that have only weak or hard-to-observe coronal signatures. In particular, some of these sources are only clearly revealed by considering the evolution of coronal structures over longer time intervals than is usually considered. The solar corona produces a continuous outflow of plasma influencing the entire solar system and beyond to over a hundred of astronomical units. Due to the Sun's proximity the source regions of that wind can be observed remotely with great precision and the escaping plasma can be measured directly in situ. Space missions launched over the past six decades have exploited this fantastic plasma laboratory to reveal the very rich physical processes at play as the solar wind forms and expands into space. This chapter provides a brief synthesis of these observational discoveries. It covers a broad range of topics, from the large‐scale imaging and detailed spectroscopic observations of the wind source regions to the dynamical evolution of interplanetary plasma down to kinetic scales. Despite the great advances accomplished in solar wind research over the past decades, many mysteries remain concerning the origins of the solar winds. These mysteries are currently being addressed with a new fleet of extraordinary missions en route to our star.

We present the solar wind forecast pipeline that is being implemented as part of the H2020 SafeSpace project. The Goal of this project is to use several tools in a modular fashion to address the physics of Sun – interplanetary space – Earth’s magnetosphere. This presentation focuses on the part of the pipeline that is dedicated to the forecasting – from solar measurements – of the solar wind properties at the Lagrangian L1 point. The modeling pipeline puts together different mature research models: determination of the background coronal magnetic field, computation of solar wind acceleration profiles (1 to 90 solar radii), propagation across the heliosphere (for regular solar wind, CIRs and CMEs), and comparison to spacecraft measurements. Different magnetogram sources (WSO, SOLIS, GONG, ADAPT) can be combined, as well as coronal field reconstruction methods (PFSS, NLFFF), wind (MULTI-VP) and heliospheric propagation models (CDPP 1D MHD, EUHFORIA). We aim at providing a web-based service that continuously supplies a full set of bulk physical parameters of the solar wind at 1 AU several days in advance, at a time cadence compatible with space weather applications. Different states of the slow solar wind are identified from in-situ measurements by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) inside 50 solar radii from the Sun (Encounters 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6). At such distances the wind measured at PSP has not yet undergone significant transformation related to the expansion and propagation of the wind. We focus in this study on the properties of the quiet solar wind with no magnetic switchbacks. The Slow Solar Wind (SSW) states differ by their density, flux, plasma beta and magnetic pressure. PSP's magnetic connectivity established with Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) reconstructions, tested against extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and white-light imaging, reveals the different states under study generally correspond to transitions from streamers to equatorial coronal holes. Solar wind simulations run along these differing flux tubes reproduce the slower and denser wind measured in the streamer and the more tenuous wind measured in the coronal hole. Plasma heating is more intense at the base of the streamer field lines rooted near the boundary of the equatorial hole than those rooted closer to the center of the hole. This results in a higher wind flux driven inside the streamer than deeper inside the equatorial hole.

The magnetic and velocity fluctuations of the solar wind may be strongly correlated. This characterizes the ‘Alfvenic’ flows. Using the observations of the Proton Alfa sensor (PAS/SWA) and the magnetometer (MAG) onboard Solar Orbiter, we analyze a period of 100 hours of such alfvenic flows, at different scales. Several parameters of the turbulence are computed (V-B correlation, various spectral indexes, cross-helicity, residual energy). We explore how these parameters may vary with time and characterize different turbulent states of the flow. More specifically, using the unprecedented time resolution of PAS during burst mode, especially its capability to measure 3D distribution functions at time scale below the proton gyroperiod, we study the connection of the turbulence to the dissipation domain and analyze the fine structure of the distribution functions and their evolutions at sub-second scales. The goal is to investigate whether some characteristics of the distributions, as their more or less pronounced temperature anisotropy, may be related to the turbulence parameters and the degree of V-B correlation.

International audience; The enrichment of coronal loops and the slow solar wind with elements that have low First Ionization Potential, known as the FIP effect, has often been interpreted as the tracer of a common origin. A current explanation for this FIP fractionation rests on the influence of ponderomotive forces and turbulent mixing acting at the top of the chromosphere. The implied wave transport and turbulence mechanisms are also key to wave-driven coronal heating and solar wind acceleration models. This work makes use of a shell turbulence model run on open and closed magnetic field lines of the solar corona to investigate with a unified approach the influence of magnetic topology, turbulence amplitude and dissipation on the FIP fractionation. We try in particular to assess whether there is a clear distinction between the FIP effect on closed and open field regions.

The origin of hard X-rays and gamma-rays emitted from the solar atmosphere during occulted solar flares is still debated. The hard X-ray emissions could come from flaring loop tops rising above the limb or Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) shock waves, two by-products of energetic solar storms. For the shock scenario to work, accelerated particles must be released on magnetic field lines rooted on the visible disk and precipitate. We present a new Monte Carlo code that computes particle acceleration at shocks propagating along large coronal magnetic loops. A first implementation of the model is carried out for the 2014 September 1 event and the modeled electron spectra are compared with those inferred from Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) measurements. When particle diffusion processes are invoked our model can reproduce the hard electron spectra measured by GBM nearly ten minutes after the estimated on-disk hard X-rays appear to have ceased from the flare site., 24 pages, 14 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Solar Orbiter spacecraft will be equipped with a wide range of remote-sensing (RS) and in situ (IS) instruments to record novel and unprecedented measurements of the solar atmosphere and the inner heliosphere. To take full advantage of these new datasets, tools and techniques must be developed to ease multi-instrument and multi-spacecraft studies. In particular the currently inaccessible low solar corona below two solar radii can only be observed remotely. Furthermore techniques must be used to retrieve coronal plasma properties in time and in three dimensional (3D) space. Solar Orbiter will run complex observation campaigns that provide interesting opportunities to maximise the likelihood of linking IS data to their source region near the Sun. Several RS instruments can be directed to specific targets situated on the solar disk just days before data acquisition. To compare IS and RS, data we must improve our understanding of how heliospheric probes magnetically connect to the solar disk. Aims. The aim of the present paper is to briefly review how the current modelling of the Sun and its atmosphere can support Solar Orbiter science. We describe the results of a community-led effort by European Space Agency's Modelling and Data Analysis Working Group (MADAWG) to develop different models, tools, and techniques deemed necessary to test different theories for the physical processes that may occur in the solar plasma. The focus here is on the large scales and little is described with regards to kinetic processes. To exploit future IS and RS data fully, many techniques have been adapted to model the evolving 3D solar magneto-plasma from the solar interior to the solar wind. A particular focus in the paper is placed on techniques that can estimate how Solar Orbiter will connect magnetically through the complex coronal magnetic fields to various photospheric and coronal features in support of spacecraft operations and future scientific studies. Methods. Recent missions such as STEREO, provided great opportunities for RS, IS, and multi-spacecraft studies. We summarise the achievements and highlight the challenges faced during these investigations, many of which motivated the Solar Orbiter mission. We present the new tools and techniques developed by the MADAWG to support the science operations and the analysis of the data from the many instruments on Solar Orbiter. Results. This article reviews current modelling and tool developments that ease the comparison of model results with RS and IS data made available by current and upcoming missions. It also describes the modelling strategy to support the science operations and subsequent exploitation of Solar Orbiter data in order to maximise the scientific output of the mission. Conclusions. The on-going community effort presented in this paper has provided new models and tools necessary to support mission operations as well as the science exploitation of the Solar Orbiter data. The tools and techniques will no doubt evolve significantly as we refine our procedure and methodology during the first year of operations of this highly promising mission. © 2020 A. P. International audience; Solar Orbiter's in situ coordination working group met frequently during the development of the mission with the goal of ensuring that its in situ payload has the necessary level of coordination to maximise science return. Here we present the results of that work, namely how the design of each of the in situ instruments (EPD, MAG, RPW, SWA) was guided by the need for coordination, the importance of time synchronisation, and how science operations will be conducted in a coordinated way. We discuss the mechanisms by which instrument sampling schemes are aligned such that complementary measurements will be made simultaneously by different instruments, and how burst modes are scheduled to allow a maximum overlap of burst intervals between the four instruments (telemetry constraints mean different instruments can spend different amounts of time in burst mode). We also explain how onboard autonomy, inter-instrument communication, and selective data downlink will be used to maximise the number of transient events that will be studied using high-resolution modes of all the instruments. Finally, we briefly address coordination between Solar Orbiter's in situ payload and other missions.

The ultimate goal is to understand how the Sun produces and controls the heliosphere, filling the Solar System and driving the planetary environments. With six remote-sensing and four in-situ instrument suites, the coordination and planning of the operations are essential to address the following four top-level science questions: (1) What drives the solar wind and where does the coronal magnetic field originate?; (2) How do solar transients drive heliospheric variability?; (3) How do solar eruptions produce energetic particle radiation that fills the heliosphere?; (4) How does the solar dynamo work and drive connections between the Sun and the heliosphere? Maximising the mission's science return requires considering the characteristics of each orbit, including the relative position of the spacecraft to Earth (affecting downlink rates), trajectory events (such as gravitational assist manoeuvres), and the phase of the solar activity cycle. Furthermore, since each orbit's science telemetry will be downloaded over the course of the following orbit, science operations must be planned at mission level, rather than at the level of individual orbits. It is important to explore the way in which those science questions are translated into an actual plan of observations that fits into the mission, thus ensuring that no opportunities are missed. First, the overarching goals are broken down into specific, answerable questions along with the required observations and the so-called Science Activity Plan (SAP) is developed to achieve this. The SAP groups objectives that require similar observations into Solar Orbiter Observing Plans, resulting in a strategic, top-level view of the optimal opportunities for science observations during the mission lifetime. This allows for all four mission goals to be addressed. In this paper, we introduce Solar Orbiter's SAP through a series of examples and the strategy being followed. © 2020 ESO., Solar Orbiter is a space mission of international collaboration between ESA and NASA with contributions from national agencies of ESA member states. To meet the scientific objectives of the mission, the Solar Orbiter spacecraft carries a suite of in-situ (IS) and remote sensing (RS) instruments designed for joint operations with inter-instrument communication capabilities. Indeed, previous missions have shown that the Sun (imaged by the RS instruments) and the heliosphere (mainly sampled by the IS instruments) should be considered as an integrated system rather than separate entities. Many of the advances expected from Solar Orbiter rely on this synergistic approach between IS and RS measurements. Aims. Many aspects of hardware development, integration, testing, and operations are common to two or more RS instruments. In this paper, we describe the coordination effort initiated from the early mission phases by the Remote Sensing Working Group. We review the scientific goals and challenges, and give an overview of the technical solutions devised to successfully operate these instruments together. Methods. A major constraint for the RS instruments is the limited telemetry (TM) bandwidth of the Solar Orbiter deep-space mission compared to missions in Earth orbit. Hence, many of the strategies developed to maximise the scientific return from these instruments revolve around the optimisation of TM usage, relying for example on onboard autonomy for data processing, compression, and selection for downlink. The planning process itself has been optimised to alleviate the dynamic nature of the targets, and an inter-instrument communication scheme has been implemented which can be used to autonomously alter the observing modes. We also outline the plans for in-flight cross-calibration, which will be essential to the joint data reduction and analysis. Results. The RS instrument package on Solar Orbiter will carry out comprehensive measurements from the solar interior to the inner heliosphere. Thanks to the close coordination between the instrument teams and the European Space Agency, several challenges specific to the RS suite were identified and addressed in a timely manner. © 2020 F. In contrast with the fast solar wind, that originates in coronal holes, the source of the slow solar wind is still debated. Often intermittent and enriched with low FIP elements -- akin to what is observed in closed coronal loops -- the slow wind could form in bursty events nearby helmet streamers. Slow winds also exhibit density perturbations which have been shown to be periodic and could be associated with flux ropes ejected from the tip of helmet streamers, as shown recently by the WISPR white light imager onboard Parker Solar Probe (PSP). In this work, we propose that the main mechanism controlling the release of flux ropes is a flow-modified tearing mode at the heliospheric current sheet (HCS). We use MHD simulations of the solar wind and corona to reproduce realistic configurations and outflows surrounding the HCS. We find that this process is able to explain long ($\sim 10-20$h) and short ($\sim 1-2$h) timescales of density structures observed in the slow solar wind. This study also sheds new light on the structure, topology and composition of the slow solar wind, and could be, in the near future, compared with white light and in situ PSP observations., 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

Recent analysis of high-cadence white-light images taken by the Solar-Terrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) near solar maximum has revealed that outflowing density structures are released in an ubiquitous manner in the solar wind. The present study investigates whether these density fluctuations could originate from the transient heating of the low corona observed during Coronal Bright Points (CBPs). We assume that part of the intense heating measured during CBPs occurs at the coronal base of open magnetic fields that channel the forming solar wind. We employ the solar wind model MULTI-VP to quantify the plasma compression induced by transient heating and investigate how the induced perturbation propagates to the upper corona. We show that for heating rates with statistics comparable to those observed during CBPs the compressive wave initially increases the local plasma density by a factor of up to 50$\%$ at 5 R$_\odot$. The wave expands rapidly beyond 30 solar radii and the local enhancement in density decreases beyond. Based on the occurrence rates of CBPs measured in previous studies, we impose transient heating events at the base of thousands of open magnetic field lines to study the response of the entire 3-D corona. The simulated density cubes are then converted into synthetic white-light imagery. We show that the resulting brightness variations occupy all position angles in the images on timescales of hours. We conclude that a significant part of the ubiquitous brightness variability of the solar corona could originate in the strong transient heating of flux tubes induced by CBPs., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Wide-field Imager for Solar PRobe (WISPR) obtained the first high-resolution images of coronal rays at heights below 15 Rsun when Parker Solar Probe (PSP) was located inside 0.25 AU during the first encounter. We exploit these remarkable images to reveal the structure of coronal rays at scales that are not easily discernible in images taken from near 1 AU. To analyze and interpret WISPR observations which evolve rapidly both radially and longitudinally, we construct a latitude versus time map using full WISPR dataset from the first encounter. From the exploitation of this map and also from sequential WISPR images we show the presence of multiple sub-structures inside streamers and pseudo-streamers. WISPR unveils the fine-scale structure of the densest part of streamer rays that we identify as the solar origin of the heliospheric plasma sheet typically measured in situ in the solar wind. We exploit 3-D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) models and we construct synthetic white-light images to study the origin of the coronal structures observed by WISPR. Overall, including the effect of the spacecraft relative motion towards the individual coronal structures we can interpret several observed features by WISPR. Moreover, we relate some coronal rays to folds in the heliospheric current sheet that are unresolved from 1 AU. Other rays appear to form as a result of the inherently inhomogeneous distribution of open magnetic flux tubes. During its first solar encounter, the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) acquired unprecedented up-close imaging of a small Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) propagating in the forming slow solar wind. The CME originated as a cavity imaged in extreme ultraviolet that moved very slowly ($, 19 pages, 10 figures, to appear in ApJS, 2 animations of Figure 2 available at https://nuage.irap.omp.eu/index.php/s/8ynNotNVWU6PrtN and https://nuage.irap.omp.eu/index.php/s/dflQ94DKuMbiaTv

We study the solar eruptive event on 2017 September 10 that produced long-lasting $>$100 MeV $\gamma$-ray emission and a ground level enhancement (GLE72). The origin of the high-energy ions producing late-phase gamma-ray emission (LPGRE) is still an open question, but a possible explanation is proton acceleration at coronal shocks produced by coronal mass ejections. We examine a common shock acceleration origin for both the LPGRE and GLE72. The $\gamma$-ray emission observed by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope exhibits a weak impulsive phase, consistent with that observed in hard X-and $\gamma$-ray line flare emissions, and what appear to be two distinct stages of LPGRE. From a detailed modeling of the shock wave, we derive the 3D distribution and temporal evolution of the shock parameters, and we examine the shock wave magnetic connection with the visible solar disk. The evolution of shock parameters on field lines returning to the visible disk, mirrors the two stages of LPGRE. We find good agreement between the time history of $>$100 MeV $\gamma$-rays and one produced by a basic shock acceleration model. The time history of shock parameters magnetically mapped to Earth agrees with the rates observed by the Fort Smith neutron monitor during the first hour of the GLE72 if we include a 30% contribution of flare-accelerated protons during the first 10 minutes, having a release time following the time history of nuclear $\gamma$-rays. Our analysis provides compelling evidence for a common shock origin for protons producing the LPGRE and most of the particles observed in GLE72., Comment: Accepted for publication in APJ, 18 pages, 12 figures

We draw a comparison between a solar energetic particle event associated with the release of a slow coronal mass ejection close to the sun, and the energetic particle population produced in high current density field-aligned current structures associated with auroral phenomena in planetary magnetospheres. We suggest that this process is common in CME development and lift-off in the corona, and may account for the electron populations that generate Type III radio bursts, as well as for the prompt energetic ion and electron populations typically observed in interplanetary space., Accepted for publication ApJ

(Abridged) Aim: We attempt to determine robust estimates of the heliospheric magnetic flux ($\Phi_H$) using Parker Solar Probe (PSP) data, analyze how susceptible this is to overestimation compared to the true open flux ($\Phi_{open}$), assess its dependence on time and space, and compare it to simple estimates from Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) models. Methods: We compare different methods of computation using data from PSP, STEREO A and Wind. The effects of fluctuations and large scale structure on the estimate are probed by using measured radial trends to produce synthetic data. Best estimates are computed as a function of time and space, and compared to estimates from PFSS models. Results: Radially-varying fluctuations of the HMF vector and variation of the Parker spiral angle cause the standard metrics of the mean and mode to evolve with radius independent of the central value about which the vector fluctuates. This is best mitigated by projecting the vector into the background Parker spiral direction. Nevertheless, we find a small enhancement in flux close to 1AU. The fraction of locally inverted field lines grows with radial distance from the Sun which remains a possible physical reason for this excess, but is negligible at PSP`s perihelia. Similarly, the impact of fluctuations in general is much reduced at PSP`s perihelia. The overall best estimate is ~2.5 nT AU2 . No strong dependence on latitude or longitude is apparent. The PFSS models predict lower values from 1.2 to 1.8 nT AU2. Conclusions: The heliospheric flux is robustly estimated relative to a mean Parker spiral direction at PSP`s perihelia where the decay of fluctuations and weakening importance of local flux inversions means $\Phi_H$ ~ $\Phi_{open}$. We discuss observations of the journey throughout the Solar System of a large interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) that was ejected at the Sun on 14 October 2014. The ICME hit Mars on 17 October, as observed by the Mars Express, MAVEN, Mars Odyssey and MSL missions, 44 hours before the encounter of the planet with the Siding-Spring comet, for which the space weather context is provided. It reached comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which was perfectly aligned with the Sun and Mars at 3.1 AU, as observed by Rosetta on 22 October. The ICME was also detected by STEREO-A on 16 October at 1 AU, and by Cassini in the solar wind around Saturn on the 12 November at 9.9 AU. Fortuitously, the New Horizons spacecraft was also aligned with the direction of the ICME at 31.6 AU. We investigate whether this ICME has a non-ambiguous signature at New Horizons. A potential detection of this ICME by Voyager-2 at 110-111 AU is also discussed. The multi-spacecraft observations allow the derivation of certain properties of the ICME, such as its large angular extension of at least 116°, its speed as a function of distance, and its magnetic field structure at four locations from 1 to 10 AU. Observations of the speed data allow two different solar wind propagation models to be validated. Finally, we compare the Forbush decreases (transient decreases followed by gradual recoveries in the galactic cosmic ray intensity) due to the passage of this ICME at Mars, comet 67P and Saturn.

International audience; The release of density structures at the tip of the coronal helmet streamers, likely as a consequence of magnetic reconnection, contributes to the mass flux of the slow solar wind. In situ measurements in the vicinity of the heliospheric plasma sheet of the magnetic field, protons and suprathermal electrons reveal details of the processes at play during the formation of density structures near the Sun. In a previous article, we exploited remote-sensing observations to derive a 3-D picture of the dynamic evolution of a streamer. We found evidence of the recurrent and continual release of dense blobs from the tip of the streamers. In the present paper, we interpret in situ measurements of the slow solar wind during solar maximum. Through both case and statistical analysis, we show that in situ signatures (magnetic field magnitude, smoothness and rotation, proton density and suprathermal electrons, in the first place) are consistent with the helmet streamers producing, in alternation, high-density regions (mostly disconnected) separated by magnetic flux ropes (mostly connected to the Sun). This sequence of emission of dense blobs and flux ropes also seems repeated at smaller scales inside each of the high-density regions. These properties are further confirmed with in situ measurements much closer to the Sun using Helios observations. We conclude on a model for the formation of dense blobs and flux ropes that explains both the in situ measurements and the remote-sensing observations presented in our previous studies.

International audience; We develop and exploit a new catalog of coronal pressure waves modeled in 3D to study the potential role of these waves in accelerating solar energetic particles (SEPs) measured in situ. Our sample comprises modeled shocks and SEP events detected during solar cycle 24 observed over a broad range of longitudes. From the 3D reconstruction of shock waves using coronagraphic observations we derived the 3D velocity along the entire front as a function of time. Combining new reconstruction techniques with global models of the solar corona, we derive the 3D distribution of basic shock parameters such as Mach numbers, compression ratios, and shock geometry. We then model in a time-dependent manner how the shock wave connects magnetically with spacecraft making in situ measurements of SEPs. This allows us to compare modeled shock parameters deduced at the magnetically well-connected regions, with different key parameters of SEPs such as their maximum intensity. This approach accounts for projection effects associated with remote-sensing observations and constitutes the most extensive study to date of shock waves in the corona and their relation to SEPs. We find a high correlation between the maximum flux of SEPs and the strength of coronal shock waves quantified, for instance, by the Mach number. We discuss the implications of that work for understanding particle acceleration in the corona.

The Wide-field Imager for Solar Probe (WISPR) on board the Parker Solar Probe (PSP) observed a CME on 2018 November 01, the first day of the initial PSP encounter. The speed of the CME, approximately 200-300 km s$^{-1}$ in the WISPR field of view, is typical of slow, streamer blowout CMEs. This event was also observed by the LASCO coronagraphs. WISPR and LASCO view remarkably similar structures that enable useful cross-comparison between the two data sets as well as stereoscopic imaging of the CME. Analysis is extended to lower heights by linking the white-light observations to EUV data from AIA, which reveal a structure that erupts more than a full day earlier before the CME finally gathers enough velocity to propagate outward. This EUV feature appears as a brightness enhancement in cooler temperatures such as 171 \AA, but as a cavity in nominal coronal temperatures such as 193 \AA. By comparing this circular, dark feature in 193 \AA \ to the dark, white-light cavity at the center of the eruption in WISPR and LASCO, it can be seen that this is one coherent structure that exists prior to the eruption in the low corona before entering the heliosphere and likely corresponds to the core of the magnetic flux rope. It is also believed that the relative weakness of the event contributed to the clarity of the flux rope in WISPR, as the CME did not experience impulsive forces or strong interaction with external structures that can lead to more complex structural evolution., Comment: 12 Pages, 9 Figures

Remote observations of the solar photospheric light scattered by electrons (the K-corona) and dust (the F-corona or zodiacal light) have been made from the ground during eclipses1 and from space at distances as small as 0.3 astronomical units2–5 to the Sun. Previous observations6–8 of dust scattering have not confirmed the existence of the theoretically predicted dust-free zone near the Sun9–11. The transient nature of the corona has been well characterized for large events, but questions still remain (for example, about the initiation of the corona12 and the production of solar energetic particles13) and for small events even its structure is uncertain14. Here we report imaging of the solar corona15 during the first two perihelion passes (0.16–0.25 astronomical units) of the Parker Solar Probe spacecraft13, each lasting ten days. The view from these distances is qualitatively similar to the historical views from ground and space, but there are some notable differences. At short elongations, we observe a decrease in the intensity of the F-coronal intensity, which is suggestive of the long-sought dust free zone9–11. We also resolve the fine-scale plasma structure of very small eruptions, which are frequently ejected from the Sun. These take two forms: the frequently observed magnetic flux ropes12,16 and the predicted, but not yet observed, magnetic islands17,18 arising from the tearing-mode instability in the current sheet. Our observations of the coronal streamer evolution confirm the large-scale topology of the solar corona, but also reveal that, as recently predicted19, streamers are composed of yet smaller substreamers channelling continual density fluctuations at all visible scales. Observations of the solar corona by the Parker Solar Probe reveal evidence for the predicted dust-free zone and confirm that streamers comprise smaller substreamers that channel continuous multiscale density fluctuations.

Type II radio bursts are generally observed in association with flare-generated or coronal-mass-ejection-driven shock waves. The exact shock and coronal conditions necessary for the production of type II radio emission are still under debate. Shock waves are important for the acceleration of electrons necessary for the generation of the radio emission. Additionally, the shock geometry and closed field line topology, e.g., quasi-perpendicular shock regions or shocks interacting with streamers, play an important role for the production of the emission. In this study we perform a 3D reconstruction and modeling of a shock wave observed during the 2014 November 5 solar event. We determine the spatial and temporal evolution of the shock properties and examine the conditions responsible for the generation and evolution of type II radio emission. Our results suggest that the formation and evolution of a strong, supercritical, quasi-perpendicular shock wave interacting with a coronal streamer were responsible for producing type II radio emission. We find that the shock wave is subcritical before and supercritical after the start of the type II emission. The shock geometry is mostly quasi-perpendicular throughout the event. Our analysis shows that the radio emission is produced in regions where the supercritical shock develops with an oblique to quasi-perpendicular geometry.

During the second solar encounter phase of Parker Solar Probe (PSP), two small solar energetic particle (SEP) events were observed by the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun, on 2019 April 2 and 4. At the time, PSP was approaching its second perihelion at a distance of ~24.8 million kilometers from the solar center, it was in near-radial alignment with STEREO-A and in quadrature with Earth. During the two SEP events multiple narrow ejections and a streamer-blowout coronal mass ejection (SBO-CME) originated from a solar region situated eastward of PSP. We analyze remote-sensing observations of the solar corona, and model the different eruptions and how PSP was connected magnetically to the solar atmosphere to determine the possible origin of the two SEP events. We find that the SEP event on April 2 was associated with the two homologous ejections from active region 12738 that included two surges and EUV waves occurring in quick succession. The EUV waves appear to merge and were fast enough to form a shock in the low corona. We show that the April 4 SEP event originates in the SBO-CME. Our modeling work suggests that formation of a weak shock is likely for this CME.

We exploit these remarkable images to reveal the structure of coronal rays at scales that are not easily discernible in images taken from near 1 au. To analyze and interpret WISPR observations, which evolve rapidly both radially and longitudinally, we construct a latitude versus time map using the full WISPR dataset from the first encounter. From the exploitation of this map and also from sequential WISPR images, we show the presence of multiple substructures inside streamers and pseudostreamers. WISPR unveils the fine-scale structure of the densest part of streamer rays that we identify as the solar origin of the heliospheric plasma sheet typically measured in situ in the solar wind. We exploit 3D magnetohydrodynamic models, and we construct synthetic white-light images to study the origin of the coronal structures observed by WISPR. Overall, including the effect of the spacecraft relative motion toward the individual coronal structures, we can interpret several observed features by WISPR. Moreover, we relate some coronal rays to folds in the heliospheric current sheet that are unresolved from 1 au. In the first orbit of the Parker Solar Probe (PSP), in situ thermal plasma and magnetic field measurements were collected as close as 35 R Sun from the Sun, an environment that had not been previously explored. During the first orbit of PSP, the spacecraft flew through a streamer blowout coronal mass ejection (SBO-CME) on 2018 November 11 at 23:50 UT as it exited the science encounter. The SBO-CME on November 11 was directed away from the Earth and was not visible by L1 or Earth-based telescopes due to this geometric configuration. However, PSP and the STEREO -A spacecraft were able to make observations of this slow (v ≈ 380 km s−1) SBO-CME. Using the PSP data, STEREO-A images, and Wang–Sheeley–Arge model, the source region of the CME is found to be a helmet streamer formed between the northern polar coronal hole and a mid-latitude coronal hole. Using the YGUAZU-A model, the propagation of the CME is traced from the source at the Sun to PSP. This model predicts the travel time of the flux rope to the PSP spacecraft as 30 hr, which is within 0.33 hr of the actual measured arrival time. The in situ Solar Wind Electrons Alphas and Protons data were examined to determine that no shock was associated with this SBO-CME. Modeling of the SBO-CME shows that no shock was present at PSP; however, at other positions along the SBO-CME front, a shock could have formed. The geometry of the event requires in situ and remote sensing observations to characterize the SBO-CME and further understand its role in space weather.

International audience; We present a 3D orbit viewer application capable of displaying science data. 3DView, a web tool designed by the French Plasma Physics Data Centre (CDPP) for the planetology and heliophysics community, has extended functionalities to render space physics data (observations and models alike) in their original 3D context. Time series, vectors, dynamic spectra, celestial body maps, magnetic field or flow lines, 2D cuts in simulation cubes, etc, are among the variety of data representation enabled by 3DView. The direct connection to several large databases, the use of VO standards and the possibility to upload user data makes 3DView a versatile tool able to cover a wide range of space physics contexts. The code is open source and the software is regularly used at Masters Degree level or summer school for pedagogical purposes. The present paper describes the general architecture and all major functionalities, and offers several science cases (simulation rendering, mission preparation, etc.) which can be easily replayed by the interested readers. Future developments are finally outlined.

The source of high-energy protons (>500 MeV) responsible for the so-called ground level enhancements (GLEs) remains an open question in solar physics. One of the candidates is a shock wave driven by a coronal mass ejection, which is thought to accelerate particles via diffusive-shock acceleration. We perform physics-based simulations of proton acceleration using information on the shock and ambient plasma parameters derived from the observation of a real GLE event. We analyse the simulation results with the aim to find out which of the parameters are significant in controlling the acceleration efficiency and to get a better understanding of the conditions under which the shock can produce relativistic protons. We use results of the recently developed technique to determine the shock and ambient plasma parameters, applied to the 17 May 2012 GLE event, and carry out proton acceleration simulations with the Coronal Shock Acceleration model. We have performed proton acceleration simulations for nine individual magnetic field lines characterised by various plasma conditions. Analysis of the simulation results shows that the acceleration efficiency of the shock, i.e., its ability to accelerate particles to high energies, tends to be higher for those shock portions that are characterised by larger values of the scattering-centre compression ratio and/or the fast-mode Mach number. At the same time, the acceleration efficiency can be strengthened due to enhanced plasma density in the flux tube. Analysis of the delays between the flare onset and the production times of protons of 1 GV rigidity for different field lines in our simulations, and a subsequent comparison of those with the observed values indicate a possibility that quasi-perpendicular portions of the shock play the main role in producing relativistic protons., 11 pages, 9 figures

Solar γ-ray events recently detected by the Fermi/LAT instrument at energies above 100 MeV have presented a puzzle for solar physicists as many of such events were observed lasting for many hours after the associated flare/coronal mass ejection (CME) eruption. Data analyses suggest the γ-ray emission originate from decay of pions produced mainly by interactions of high-energy protons deep in the chromosphere. Whether those protons are accelerated in the associated flare or in the CME-driven shock has been under active discussion. In this chapter, we present some modelling efforts aimed at testing the shock acceleration hypothesis. We address two γ-ray events: 2012 January 23 and 2012 May 17 and approach the problem by, first, simulating the proton acceleration at the shock and, second, simulating their transport back to the Sun.
