The discovery of van der Waals (vdW) magnets opened a new paradigm for condensed matter physics and spintronic technologies. However, the operations of active spintronic devices with vdW ferromagnets are limited to cryogenic temperatures, inhibiting their broader practical applications. Here, the robust room-temperature operation of lateral spin-valve devices using the vdW itinerant ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 in heterostructures with graphene is demonstrated. The room-temperature spintronic properties of Fe5GeTe2 are measured at the interface with graphene with a negative spin polarization. Lateral spin-valve and spin-precession measurements provide unique insights by probing the Fe5GeTe2/graphene interface spintronic properties via spin-dynamics measurements, revealing multidirectional spin polarization. Density functional theory calculations in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulations reveal significantly canted Fe magnetic moments in Fe5GeTe2 along with the presence of negative spin polarization at the Fe5GeTe2/graphene interface. These findings open opportunities for vdW interface design and applications of vdW-magnet-based spintronic devices at ambient temperatures.

We study mechanisms of absorption in two essentially different types of superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) bolometers with absorber directly placed on Si wafer and with absorber suspended above the substrate. The figure of merit for quantum photon absorption is quantum efficiency equal to the number of detected electrons for one photon. The efficiency of absorption is dramatically dependent on phonon losses to substrate and electrodes, and electron energy losses to electrodes through tunnel junctions. The maximum quantum efficiency can approach n = hf/kT = 160 at f = 350 GHz T = 0.1 K, and current responsivity d I /d P = e/kT in quantum gain bolometer case, contrary to photon counter mode with quantum efficiency of n = 1 and responsivity d I /d P = e/hf . In experiments, we approach intrinsic quantum efficiency up to n = 80 electrons per photon in bolometer with suspended absorber, contrary to quantum efficiency of about one for absorber on the substrate. In the case of suspended Cu and Pd absorber, Kapitsa resistance protect from power leak to Al electrodes.

A superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) detector integrated in a planar 90 GHz band twin-slot antenna with a 2 GHz superconducting resonator readout was fabricated and experimentally studied. In order to achieve high pixel count, the traditional dc readout of the SINIS detector is replaced by NbN coplanar 13.850 mm long superconducting resonator. SINIS detectors have traditionally dc Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET) room-temperature readout. Such readout requires individual wiring for each pixel, while the microwave readout is far less cluttered as only one coaxial line is needed for hundreds of devices. Such readout operates similar to frequency domain multiplexing (FDM) for microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKID). The planar twin slot antenna has two parallel slots in a metal ground plane which are excited coherently by short sections of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) line with a SINIS detector at the center. One section of the CPW is extended past the slot in a long superconducting section which functions as a quarter wavelength resonator. This resonator is short circuited to the ground plane at the far end, with the expected open circuited end terminated by the SINIS detector in the antenna. We measured the response of sample to black body radiation temperatures 6 K and 9 K. The corresponding dynamic resistance maximum drops from 50 kΩ down to 30 kΩ. An RF readout channel comprising a coplanar coupler and a coplanar resonator has a resonant frequency of 1.8 GHz. Unloaded Q factor (without incoming irradiation) is 200. The signal spectral characteristics and the response to the black body radiation have shown design values as expected.

Two types arrays of annular half-wave and electrically small antennas with typical sizes of the elements corresponding to 1/10 of the wavelength at SubTHz band with integrated superconductor–insulator–normal metal–insulator–superconductor (SINIS) bolometers have been developed, fabricated and experimentally studied. We performed numerical modeling of the full structure and use additional reference channels in experimental studies to enhance the accuracy of the spectral response estimations of receiving arrays. In experiments three reference channels were used for normalization of the spectral response: a pyroelectric detector outside the cryostat, and two cold channels—a RuO2 bolometer and on-chip thermometer comprising series array of NIS-junctions.

Complex oxides show extreme sensitivity to structural distortions and defects, and the intricate balance of competing interactions which emerge at atomically defined interfaces may give rise to unexpected physics. In the interfaces of non-magnetic complex oxides, one of the most intriguing properties is the emergence of magnetism which is sensitive to chemical defects. Particularly, it is unclear which defects are responsible for the emergent magnetic interfaces. Here, we show direct and clear experimental evidence, supported by theoretical explanation, that the B-site cation stoichiometry is crucial for the creation and control of magnetism at the interface between non-magnetic ABO3-perovskite oxides, LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. We find that consecutive defect formation, driven by atomic charge compensation, establishes the formation of robust perpendicular magnetic moments at the interface. Our observations propose a route to tune these emerging magnetoelectric structures, which are strongly coupled at the polar-nonpolar complex oxide interfaces., In the interfaces of non-magnetic complex oxides, it is unclear which defects are responsible for the magnetic interfaces. Objective: To present the technical design and demonstrate the feasibility of a multi-channel on-scalp magnetoencephalography (MEG) system based on high critical temperature (high- ${T}_\text{c}$ ) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). Methods: We built a liquid nitrogen-cooled cryostat that houses seven YBCO SQUID magnetometers arranged in a dense, head-aligned array with minimal distance to the room-temperature environment for all sensors. We characterize the performance of this 7-channel system in terms of on-scalp MEG utilization and present recordings of spontaneous and evoked brain activity. Results: The center-to-center spacing between adjacent SQUIDs is 12.0 and 13.4 mm and all SQUIDs are in the range of 1-3 mm of the head surface. The cryostat reaches a base temperature of $\sim$ 70 K and stays cold for $>$ 16 h with a single 0.9 L filling. The white noise levels of the magnetometers is 50–130 fT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz and they show low sensor-to-sensor feedback flux crosstalk ( $ 0.6%). We demonstrate evoked fields from auditory stimuli and single-shot sensitivity to alpha modulation from the visual cortex. Conclusion: All seven channels in the system sensitively sample neuromagnetic fields with mm-scale scalp standoff distances. The hold time of the cryostat furthermore is sufficient for a day of recordings. As such, our multi-channel high- ${T}_\text{c}$ SQUID-based system meets the demands of on-scalp MEG. Significance: The system presented here marks the first high- ${T}_\text{c}$ SQUID-based on-scalp MEG system with more than two channels. It enables us to further explore the benefits of on-scalp MEG in future recordings.

Samples of superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) and normal metal–insulator–superconductor (NIS) junctions with superconducting aluminum of different thickness were fabricated and experimentally studied, starting from conventional shadow evaporation with a suspended resist bridge. We also developed alternative fabrication by magnetron sputtering with two-step direct e-beam patterning. We compared Al film grain size, surface roughness, resistivity deposited by thermal evaporation and magnetron sputtering. The best-quality NIS junctions with large superconducting electrodes approached a resistance R(0)/R(V2Δ) factor ratio of 1000 at 0.3 K and over 10,000 at 0.1 K. At 0.1 K, R(0) was determined completely by the Andreev current. The contribution of the single-electron current dominated at V > VΔ/2. The single-electron resistance extrapolated to V = 0 exceeded the resistance R(V2Δ) by 3 × 109. We measured the influence of the magnetic field on NIS junctions and described the mechanism of additional conductivity due to induced Abrikosov vortices. The modified shape of the SINIS bolometer IV curve was explained by Joule overheating via NIN (normal metal–insulator–normal metal) channels.

We report on measurements of the doping dependence of the upper critical field H c , 2 in 50 nm thick YBa2Cu3O 7 − δ films. The films are untwinned and are characterized by a small in-plane compressive strain. We find that the H c , 2 shows a strong decrease in the underdoped region of the phase diagram, in agreement with that which has been measured in relaxed single crystals. The origin of the decrease of H c , 2 in the underdoped regime is discussed within a scenario where charge density wave (CDW) order competes with superconductivity. This demonstrates the potential of using thin films to study the phase diagram of high-T c materials under strain, and opens up the possibility for investigating the interplay between CDW order and superconductivity tuned by strain.

We present a ‘top-down’ patterning technique based on ion milling performed at low-temperature, for the realization of oxide two-dimensional electron system devices with dimensions down to 160 nm. Using electrical transport and scanning Superconducting QUantum Interference Device measurements we demonstrate that the low-temperature ion milling process does not damage the 2DES properties nor creates oxygen vacancies-related conducting paths in the STO substrate. As opposed to other procedures used to realize oxide 2DES devices, the one we propose gives lateral access to the 2DES along the in-plane directions, finally opening the way to coupling with other materials, including superconductors.

We present an investigation of the superconducting properties of thin YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) films grown on [001] single-crystalline quartz substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. The growth of YBCO on quartz is challenging due to large crystal lattice mismatch between YBCO and quartz. We obtained highly c-oriented textured films with superconducting transition at about 85 K, transition width of 1 K, and critical current density jc ≈ 104 A cm−2 at 77 K. Analysis of the temperature dependences of the resistivity and current-voltage characteristics has shown the presence of the thermally-assisted flux flow at temperatures above 70 K. From the temperature and magnetic field dependences of critical current, vortex activation energy, U0(H), was estimated for both parallel and perpendicular orientation of magnetic field. Second critical field, Hc2(0), was estimated from extrapolation of the Hc2(T) dependences. The obtained results are an important step towards realization of YBCO thin films on amorphous silica fibers for the third generation (3 G) of the HTS long wire with low losses in alternative current applications.

The development of “fault-tolerant” quantum computers, unaffected by noise and decoherence, is one of the fundamental challenges in quantum technology. One of the approaches currently followed is the realization of “topologically protected” qubits which make use of quantum systems characterized by a degenerate ground state of composite particles, known as “non-Abelian anyons”, able to encode and manipulate quantum information in a non-local manner. In this paper, we discuss the potential of quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG) at the interface between band insulating oxides, like LaAlO3 and SrTiO3, as an innovative technological platform for the realization of topological quantum systems. Being characterized by a unique combination of unconventional spin-orbit coupling, magnetism, and 2D-superconductivity, these systems naturally possess most of the fundamental characteristics needed for the realization of a topological superconductor. These properties can be widely tuned by electric field effect acting on the orbital splitting and occupation of the non-degenerate 3dxy and 3dxz,yz bands. The topological state in oxide q2DEGs quasi-one-dimensional nanochannels could be therefore suitably controlled, leading to conceptual new methods for the realization of a topological quantum electronics based on the tuning of the orbital degrees of freedom. The interface between two wide band-gap insulators, LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (LAO/STO), hosts a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas (q2DEG), two-dimensional superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and giant Rashba spin-orbit coupling. The co-existence of two-dimensional superconductivity with gate-tunable spin-orbit coupling and multiband occupation is of particular interest for the realization of unconventional superconducting pairing. To investigate the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter, phase sensitive measurements of the Josephson effect are required. We describe an approach for the fabrication of artificial superconducting weak links at the LAO/STO interface using direct high-resolution electron beam lithography and low-energy argon ion beam irradiation. The method does not require lift-off steps or sacrificial layers. Therefore, resolution is only limited by the electron beam lithography and pattern transfer. We have realized superconducting weak links with a barrier thickness of 30–100 nm. The barrier transparency of the weak links can be controlled by the irradiation dose and further tuned by a gate voltage. Our results open up new possibilities for the realization of quantum devices in oxide interfaces.

Microwave detectors of the Metal-Insulator-Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIMIM) structure and the Superconductor-Insulator-Metal-Insulator-Superconductor (SIMIS) structure have been designed, fabricated and investigated. The difference of such samples was in external electrodes, MIMIM uses copper external electrodes, while SIMIS uses aluminum. Identical in dimensions MIMIM and SIMIS samples have been fabricated and experimentally studied in the temperature range of 0.1–2.7 K. Voltage and current response were measured at 300 GHz external irradiation using Backward Wave Oscillator (BWO). According to our estimates, the MIMIM current responsivity is 1.1·103 A/W in the case of a photon response and 4·104 A/W in the case of a bolometric response. The estimated noise equivalent power is in the range 2.5·10 18 W/ √ Hz to 1.2·10−19 W/√Hz.

In the quest for developing novel and efficient batteries, a great interest has been raised for sustainable K-based honeycomb layer oxide materials, both for their application in energy devices as well as for their fundamental material properties. A key issue in the realization of efficient batteries based on such compounds, is to understand the K-ion diffusion mechanism. However, investigation of potassium-ion (K$$^+$$ + ) dynamics in materials using e.g. NMR and related techniques has so far been very challenging, due to its inherently weak nuclear magnetic moment, in contrast to other alkali ions such as lithium and sodium. Spin-polarised muons, having a high gyromagnetic ratio, make the muon spin rotation and relaxation ($$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR) technique ideal for probing ions dynamics in these types of energy materials. Here we present a study of the low-temperature magnetic properties as well as K$$^+$$ + dynamics in honeycomb layered oxide material $${\hbox {K}_2\hbox {Ni}_2\hbox {TeO}_6}$$ K 2 Ni 2 TeO 6 using mainly the $$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR technique. Our low-temperature $$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR results together with complementary magnetic susceptibility measurements find an antiferromagnetic transition at $$T_{\mathrm{N}}\approx 27$$ T N ≈ 27 K. Further $${\mu}^{+}$$ μ + SR studies performed at higher temperatures reveal that potassium ions (K$$^+$$ + ) become mobile above 200 K and the activation energy for the diffusion process is obtained as $$E_{\mathrm{a}}=121 (13)$$ E a = 121 ( 13 ) meV. This is the first time that K$$^+$$ + dynamics in potassium-based battery materials has been measured using $$\mu ^+$$ μ + SR. Assisted by high-resolution neutron diffraction, the temperature dependence of the K-ion self diffusion constant is also extracted. Finally our results also reveal that K-ion diffusion occurs predominantly at the surface of the powder particles. This opens future possibilities for potentially improving ion diffusion as well as K-ion battery device performance using nano-structuring and surface coatings of the particles.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is an important part of epilepsy evaluations because of its unsurpassed ability to detect interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). This ability may be improved by next-generation MEG sensors, where sensors are placed directly on the scalp instead of in a fixed-size helmet, as in today’s conventional MEG systems. In order to investigate the usefulness of on-scalp MEG measurements we performed the first-ever measurements of on-scalp MEG on an epilepsy patient. The measurement was conducted as a benchmarking study, with special focus on IED detection. An on-scalp high-temperature SQUID system was utilized alongside a conventional low-temperature “in-helmet” SQUID system. EEG was co-registered during both recordings. Visual inspection of IEDs in the raw on-scalp MEG data was unfeasible why a novel machine learning-based IED-detection algorithm was developed to guide IED detection in the on-scalp MEG data. A total of 24 IEDs were identified visually from the conventional in-helmet MEG session (of these, 16 were also seen in the EEG data; eight were detected only by MEG). The on-scalp MEG data contained a total of 47 probable IEDs of which 16 IEDs were co-registered by the EEG, and 31 IEDs were on-scalp MEG-unique IEDs found by the IED detection algorithm. We present a successful benchmarking study where on-scalp MEG are compared to conventional in-helmet MEG in a temporal lobe epilepsy patient. Our results demonstrate that on-scalp MEG measurements are feasible on epilepsy patients, and indicate that on-scalp MEG might capture IEDs not seen by other non-invasive modalities.

The transport properties of a YBa2Cu3 O 7 - δ superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based on grooved Dayem bridge weak links are studied as a function of temperature: at high temperatures (60 K < T < T c = 89 K), the weak links show properties similar to superconductor-normal conductor-superconductor junctions, while at temperatures below 60 K, the weak links behave like short Dayem bridges. Using these devices, we have fabricated SQUID magnetometers with galvanically coupled in-plane pickup loops: at T = 77 K, magnetic field white noise levels as low as 63 fT/ Hz have been achieved.

We have grown untwinned YBa2Cu3O7-delta (YBCO) films on (110) MgO substrates that were preannealed at high temperature in oxygen atmosphere. The annealing results in surface reconstruction with shallow facets, which induce the suppression of the YBCO twinning domains, and the preferential alignment of the CuO chains along one of the in-plane directions of the substrate. Because of the large mismatch between the in-plane lattice parameters of film and substrate, the strain induced by the MgO into the YBCO layer is strong and very peculiar. The YBCO film is compressed, with respect to the bulk, and presents a unidirectional buckling of the atomic planes, along the chains' direction, due to a deformation of the copper-oxygen octahedra. The YBCO films, which can be grown with thicknesses down to few unit cells and oxygen doping levels spanning most of the superconducting dome, are patterned into nanowires with dimensions down to 50 nm. The anisotropies due to the untwinning state are preserved in these structures; moreover, additional anisotropies appear in ultrathin structures where strain effects become more pronounced. Such untwinned and compressively strained films can therefore be used as a platform to study the interplay between strain and the various local orders in the normal state of YBCO.

We use functionalized iron oxide magnetic multi-core particles of 100 nm in size (hydrodynamic particle diameter) and AC susceptometry (ACS) methods to measure the binding reactions between the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and bio-analyte products produced from DNA segments using the rolling circle amplification (RCA) method. We use sensitive induction detection techniques in order to measure the ACS response. The DNA is amplified via RCA to generate RCA coils with a specific size that is dependent on the amplification time. After about 75 min of amplification we obtain an average RCA coil diameter of about 1 µm. We determine a theoretical limit of detection (LOD) in the range of 11 attomole (corresponding to an analyte concentration of 55 fM for a sample volume of 200 µL) from the ACS dynamic response after the MNPs have bound to the RCA coils and the measured ACS readout noise. We also discuss further possible improvements of the LOD.

The hold time of the cryostat furthermore is sufficient for a day of recordings. As such, our multi-channel high-[Formula: see text] SQUID-based system meets the demands of on-scalp MEG.The system presented here marks the first high-[Formula: see text] SQUID-based on-scalp MEG system with more than two channels. It enables us to further explore the benefits of on-scalp MEG in future recordings.

Assays are widely used for detection of various targets, including pathogens, drugs, and toxins. Homogeneous assays are promising for the realization of point-of-care diagnostics as they do not require separation, immobilization, or washing steps. For low concentrations of target molecules, the speed and sensitivity of homogeneous assays have hitherto been limited by slow binding kinetics, time-consuming amplification steps, and the presence of a high background signal. Here, we present a homogeneous differential magnetic assay that utilizes a differential magnetic readout that eliminates previous limitations of homogeneous assays. The assay uses a gradiometer sensor configuration combined with precise microfluidic sample handling. This enables simultaneous differential measurement of a positive test sample containing a synthesized Vibrio cholerae target and a negative control sample, which reduces the background signal and increases the readout speed. Very low concentrations of targets down to femtomolar levels are thus detectable without any additional amplification of the number of targets. Our homogeneous differential magnetic assay method opens new possibilities for rapid and highly sensitive diagnostics at the point of care.

The specific binding of oligonucleotide-tagged 100 nm magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to rolling circle products (RCPs) is investigated using our newly developed differential homogenous magnetic assay (DHMA). The DHMA measures ac magnetic susceptibility from a test and a control samples simultaneously and eliminates magnetic background signal. Therefore, the DHMA can reveal details of binding kinetics of magnetic nanoparticles at very low concentrations of RCPs. From the analysis of the imaginary part of the DHMA signal, we find that smaller MNPs in the particle ensemble bind first to the RCPs. When the RCP concentration increases, we observe the formation of agglomerates, which leads to lower number of MNPs per RCP at higher concentrations of RCPs. The results thus indicate that a full frequency range of ac susceptibility observation is necessary to detect low concentrations of target RCPs and a long amplification time is not required as it does not significantly increase the number of MNPs per RCP. The findings are critical for understanding the underlying microscopic binding process for improving the assay performance. They furthermore suggest DHMA is a powerful technique for dynamically characterizing the binding interactions between MNPs and biomolecules in fluid volumes.

A new optical setup is described that allows the reflectivity at grazing incidence to be measured, including ultrathin films and two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) down to liquid-helium temperatures, by exploiting the Berreman effect and the high brilliance of infrared synchrotron radiation. This apparatus is well adapted to detect the absorption of a 2DES of nanometric thickness, namely that which forms spontaneously at the interface between a thin film of LaAlO3 and its SrTiO3 substrate, and to determine its Drude parameters.

We present noise measurements performed on a YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ nanoscale weak-link-based magnetometer consisting of a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) galvanically coupled to a $3.5 \times 3.5~$mm$^2$ pick-up loop, reaching white flux noise levels and magnetic noise levels as low as $6~\mu\Phi_0 / \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ and $100$~fT/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at $T=77$~K, respectively. The low noise is achieved by introducing Grooved Dayem Bridges (GDBs), a new concept of weak-link. A fabrication technique has been developed for the realization of nanoscale grooved bridges, which substitutes standard Dayem bridge weak links. The introduction of these novel key blocks reduces the parasitic inductance of the weak links and increases the differential resistance of the SQUIDs. This greatly improves the device performance, thus resulting in a reduction of the white noise.

We present noise measurements performed on a YBa

Due to their higher operating temperature, high-Tc superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) require less thermal insulation than the low-Tc sensors that are utilized in commercial magnetoen-cephalography (MEG) systems. As a result, they can be placed closer to the head, where neuromagnetic fields are higher and more focal, potentially leading to higher spatial resolution. The first such on-scalp MEG measurements using high-Tc SQUIDs have shown the potential of the technology. In order to be useful for neuroscience and clinical applications, however, multi-channel systems are required. Herein, we present a 7-channel on-scalp MEG system based on high-Tc SQUIDs. The YBCO SQUID magnetometers are arranged in a dense, head-aligned hexagonal array inside a single, liquid nitrogen-cooled cryostat. The spacing between the magnetometers and the head is adjustable down to 1 mm. The sensors are side-mounted on the cryostat that is mounted on an articulated armature for recordings on arbitrary head locations of a seated subject. We demonstrate white noise levels of 50-130 fT/Hz1/2 at 10 Hz, sensor-to-sensor crosstalk values of <0.6%, and single-fill operation times of 16 hours. We validate the system with MEG recordings of visual alpha modulation and auditory evoked fields. The system is thus useful for densely and sensitively sampling neuromagnetic fields over any ∼ 10 cm2 patch of the scalp surface over the course of a day.

Presentation of Chalmers activities

We report noise measurements performed on a SQUID magnetometer implementing Grooved Dayem nanobridge of YBCO as weak-links. The SQUID shows magnetic flux noise as low as 10 $\mu \Phi_0$/Hz$^{0.5}$. The magnetometer is realized by coupling the SQUID to a flux transformer with a two-level coupling scheme using a flip-chip approach. This improves the effective area of the SQUID and result in a magnetic field noise of 50 fT/Hz$^{0.5}$ at T=77 K., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Inductance is a key parameter when optimizing the performance of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometers made from the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) because lower SQUID inductance L leads to lower flux noise, but also weaker coupling to the pickup loop. In order to optimize the SQUID design, we combine inductance simulations and measurements to extract the different inductance contributions, and measure the dependence of the transfer function V Φ and flux noise S Φ 1 / 2 on L. A comparison between two samples shows that the kinetic inductance contribution varies strongly with film quality, hence making inductance measurements a crucial part of the SQUID characterization. Thanks to the improved estimation of the kinetic inductance contribution, previously found discrepancies between theoretical estimates and measured values of V Φ and S Φ 1 / 2 could to a large extent be avoided. We then use the measurements and improved theoretical estimations to optimize the SQUID geometry and reach a noise level of S B 1 / 2 = 44 fT/ Hz for the best SQUID magnetometer with a 8.6 mm × 9.2 mm directly coupled pickup loop. Lastly, we demonstrate a method for reliable one-time sensor calibration that is constant in a temperature range of several kelvin despite the presence of temperature dependent coupling contributions, such as the kinetic inductance. The found variability of the kinetic inductance contribution has implications not only for the design of YBCO SQUID magnetometers, but for all narrow linewidth SQUID-based devices operated close to their critical temperature.

We have used grazing-angle infrared spectroscopy with polarized radiation to detect the Berreman effect (BE) in the two-dimensional electron systems (2DES) which form spontaneously at two interfaces: one between an amorphous film LaAlO3 and its SrTiO3 substrate (LAO/STO), and another at the interface between the topological insulator (TI) Bi2Se3 and its sapphire substrate. In both systems we have thus extracted the 2DES parameters at different temperatures. In the quasi-2DES under amorphous LAO, the surface density ns is higher than under crystalline LAO, while the mobility is nearly the same and the thickness d is 7 nm. In ultrapure Bi2Se3 on sapphire, preliminary data provided d < 1 nm and ns ≈ 1013 cm−2, indicating, by comparison with existing estimates, that the BE indeed detects the topological surface states.

We developed a novel biodetection method for influenza virus based on AC magnetic susceptibility measurement techniques (the DynoMag induction technique) together with functionalized multi-core magnetic nanoparticles. The sample consisting of an incubated mixture of magnetic nanoparticles and rolling circle amplified DNA coils is injected into a tube by a peristaltic pump. The sample is moved as a plug to the two well-balanced detection coils and the dynamic magnetic moment in each position is read over a range of excitation frequencies. The time for making a complete frequency sweep over the relaxation peak is about 5 minutes (10 Hz&ndash, 10 kHz with 20 data points). The obtained standard deviation of the magnetic signal at the relaxation frequency (around 100 Hz) is equal to about 10&minus, 5 (volume susceptibility SI units), which is in the same range obtained with the DynoMag system. The limit of detection with this method is found to be in the range of 1 pM.

We have used grazing-angle infrared spectroscopy to detect the Berreman effect (BE) in the quasi-two-dimensional electron system (q-2DES) which forms spontaneously at the interface between SrTiO 3 (STO) and a thin film of LaAlO 3 (LAO). From the BE, which allows one to study longitudinal optical excitations in ultrathin films like the q-2DES, we have extracted at different temperatures its thickness, the charge density and mobility of the carriers under crystalline LAO (sample A), and the charge density under amorphous LAO (sample B). The latter quantity turns out to be higher than in sample A, but a comparison with Hall measurements shows that under amorphous LAO the charges are partly localized at low T with a low activation energy (about 190 K in units of kB) and are thermally activated according to a model for large polarons. The thickness of the q-2DES extracted from our spectra turns out to be 4±1 nm for crystalline LAO and 7±2 nm for amorphous LAO.

SrRuO3 (SRO) is a perovskite increasingly used in oxide-based electronics both for its intrinsic metallicity, which remains unaltered in thin films and for the ease of deposition on dielectric perovskites like SrTiO3, (STO) to implement SRO/STO microcapacitors and other devices. In order to test the reliability of SRO/STO also as high-current on-chip conductor, when the SRO dimensions are pushed to the nanoscale, here we have measured the electrodynamic properties of arrays of nanoribbons, fabricated by lithography starting from an ultrathin film of SRO deposited on a STO substrate. The nanoribbons are 6 or 4 nm thick, 400, 200 and 100 nm wide and 5 mm long. The measurements have been performed by infrared spectroscopy, a non-contact weakly perturbing technique which also allows one to separately determine the carrier density and their scattering rate or mobility. Far-infrared reflectivity spectra have been analyzed by Rigorous Coupled-Wave Analysis (RCWA) and by an Effective Medium Theory, obtaining consistent results. With the radiation polarized along the nanoribbons, we obtain a carrier density similar to that of a flat film used as reference, which in turn is similar to that of bulk SRO. Moreover, in the nanoribbons the carrier scattering rate is even smaller than in the unpatterned film by about a factor of 2. This shows that the transport properties of SRO deposited on STO remain at least unaltered down to nanometric dimensions, with interesting perspectives for implementing on-chip nano-interconnects in an oxide-based electronics. When excited in the perpendicular direction, the nanoribbons appear instead virtually transparent to the radiation field, as predicted by RCWA.

Topological superconductivity is central to a variety of novel phenomena involving the interplay between topologically ordered phases and broken-symmetry states. The key ingredient is an unconventional order parameter, with an orbital component containing a chiral $p_x$ + i$p_y$ wave term. Here we present phase-sensitive measurements, based on the quantum interference in nanoscale Josephson junctions, realized by using Bi$_2$Te$_3$ topological insulator. We demonstrate that the induced superconductivity is unconventional and consistent with a sign-changing order parameter, such as a chiral $p_x$ + i$p_y$ component. The magnetic field pattern of the junctions shows a dip at zero externally applied magnetic field, which is an incontrovertible signature of the simultaneous existence of 0 and $\pi$ coupling within the junction, inherent to a non trivial order parameter phase. The nano-textured morphology of the Bi$_2$Te$_3$ flakes, and the dramatic role played by thermal strain are the surprising key factors for the display of an unconventional induced order parameter., Comment: 47 pages, 7 figures in the main text and 12 figures in the supplementary material
