Floodplains are unique environments that provide a dynamic link between terrestrial and aquatic systems. Intensification of human activity – particularly agriculture and urbanisation – has resulted in the degradation of floodplains worldwide. Restoration and sustainable management of floodplains requires holistic assessment and compromise between stakeholders to successfully balance environmental, economic, and social benefits. Yet, understanding these complex systems sufficiently to provide evidence-based recommendations is a challenge. We present the lessons learned from establishing an interdisciplinary research-based framework on the agricultural floodplain of Lake Saint Pierre, Québec, Canada, whose mandate was to a) understand and define key environmental, agricultural, and socioeconomic attributes of the landscape, b) quantify the trade-offs and synergies between these attributes across different agricultural practices, regions, and land uses, and c) explore novel agri-environmental management practices to assess their role in sustainable floodplain management. Within this manuscript, we explore the benefits that such an approach offers in evaluating sustainable floodplain land use. We found that an interdisciplinary research-based approach demonstrated important benefits such as knowledge transfer, more efficient use of resources (e.g., personnel, funding), and a flexible yet robust research framework. A framework of individual research projects connected to broader interdisciplinary themes allowed a more holistic synthesis of the floodplain systems and assessment of agri-environmental practices. By implicitly considering spatial and social scales, we conceptualised not just how redistribution of the land use types can meet sustainable management objectives, but also explored how compromises within existing uses can optimise socio-economic, agricultural and environmental dimensions and move towards a sustainable multifunctional landscape.

Abstract Northern regions are warming faster than the rest of the globe. It is difficult to predict ecosystem responses to warming because the thermal sensitivity of their biophysical components varies. Here, we present an analysis of the authors’ expert judgment regarding the sensitivity of six ecosystem components – permafrost, peatlands, lakes, snowpack, vegetation, and endothermic vertebrates – across northern landscapes ranging from boreal to polar biomes. We identified 28 discontinuous component states across a 3700 km latitudinal gradient in northeastern North America and quantified sensitivity as the transition time from an initial to a contrasting state following a theoretical step change increase in mean annual air temperature of 5 °C. We infer that multiple interconnected state shifts are likely to occur within a narrow subarctic latitudinal band at timescales of 10 to more than 100 years, and response times decrease with latitude. Response times differ between components and across latitudes, which is likely to impair the integrity of ecosystems.

Soil Moisture (SM) is a key parameter in northern Arctic and sub-Arctic (A-SA) environments that are highly vulnerable to climate change. We evaluated six SM satellite passive microwave datasets using thirteen ground-based SM stations across Northwestern America. The best agreement was obtained with SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) products with the lowest RMSD (Root Mean Square Difference) (0.07 m[Formula: see text] m[Formula: see text]) and the highest R (0.55). ESA CCI (European Space Agency Climate Change Initiative) also performed well in terms of correlation with a similar R (0.55) but showed a strong variation among sites. Weak results were obtained over sites with high water body fractions. This study also details and evaluates a dedicated retrieval of SM from SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) brightness temperatures based on the [Formula: see text] model. Two soil dielectric models (Mironov and Bircher) and a dedicated soil roughness and single scattering albedo parameterization were tested. Water body correction in the retrieval shows limited improvement. The metrics of our retrievals (RMSD = 0.08 m[Formula: see text] m[Formula: see text] and R = 0.41) are better than SMOS but outperformed by SMAP. Passive microwave satellite remote sensing is suitable for SM retrieval in the A-SA region, but a dedicated approach should be considered.

The objective of this study is to analyze the temporal variability in water levels of Lake Mégantic (27.4 km2) during the period 1920–2020 in relation to anthropogenic and natural factors on the one hand, and its impact on the intensity and frequency of heavy flooding (recurring floods ≥ 10 years) of the Chaudière River of which it is the source, on the other hand. The application of four different Mann–Kendall tests showed a significant decrease in lake water levels during this period. The Lombard test revealed two breaks in the average daily maximum and average water levels, but only one break in the average daily minimum water levels. The first shift, which was smoothed, occurred between 1957 and 1963. It was caused by the demolition in 1956 of the first dam built in 1893 and the significant storage of water in the dams built upstream of the lake between 1956 and 1975. The second shift, which was rather abrupt, occurred between 1990 and 1993. It was caused by the voluntary and controlled lowering of the lake’s water levels in 1993 to increase the surface area of the beaches for recreational purposes. However, despite this influence of anthropogenic factors on this drop in water levels, they are negatively correlated with the global warming climate index. It is therefore a covariation, due to anthropogenic factors whose impacts are exerted at different spatial scales, without a physical causal link. However, the winter daily minimum water levels, whose temporal variability has not been influenced by anthropogenic activities, are positively correlated with the NAO and AO indices, but negatively with PDO. Finally, since the transformation of Lake Mégantic into a reservoir following the construction of the Mégantic dam in 1893 and 1973 to control heavy flooding in the Chaudière River, all recurrent floods ≥ 10 years have completely disappeared in the section of this river located downstream of Lake Mégantic. However, the disappearance of these floods and the drop in water levels of Lake Mégantic have not significantly impacted the stationarity in the flow series of the Chaudière River since 1920.

This study confronts the new concept of ‘surface storage’ with the old concept of ‘sponge effect’ to explain the spatio-temporal variability of the annual daily maximum flows measured in 17 watersheds of southern Quebec during the period 1930–2019. The new concept takes into account the hydrological impacts of wetlands and other topographic components of the landscape (lakes, depressions, ditches, etc.) while that of the sponge effect only takes into account the hydrological impacts of wetlands. With regard to spatial variability, the area of wetlands and other water bodies is the variable best correlated negatively with the magnitude but positively with the duration of flows. As for the temporal variability, the application of the long-term trend tests revealed a significant increase in the magnitude and, to a lesser extent, the duration of the flows occurring in the watersheds of the north shore characterized by a greater area of wetlands and other water bodies (>5%). This increase is explained by the fact that the storage capacity of these land types, which remains unchanged over time, does not make it possible to store the surplus runoff water brought by the increase in rainfall during the snowmelt season. HIGHLIGHTS Wetlands are negatively correlated with the magnitude of flood flows.; Wetlands are positively correlated with their duration.; Wetlands are not correlated to their frequency and variability.; Wetlands can promote significant increases in flood magnitude and duration over time.; This spatio-temporal variability in the magnitude and duration of flood flows is due to the storage of surface water by wetlands.;

Nearly 50 million km2 of global land experiences seasonal transitions from predominantly frozen to thawed conditions, significantly impacting various ecosystems and hydrologic processes. In this study, we assessed the capability to retrieve surface freeze–thaw (FT) conditions using Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data time series at two agro-forested study sites, St-Marthe and St-Maurice, in southern Québec, Canada. In total, 18 plots were instrumented to monitor soil temperature and derive soil freezing probabilities at 2 and 10 cm depths during 2020–21 and 2021–22. Three change detection algorithms were tested: backscatter differences (∆σ) derived from thawed reference (Delta), the freeze–thaw index (FTI), and a newly developed exponential freeze–thaw algorithm (EFTA). Various probabilistic mixed models were compared to identify the model and predictor variables that best predicted soil freezing probability. VH polarization backscatter signals processed with the EFTA and used as predictors in a logistic model led to improved predictions of soil freezing probability at 2 cm (Pseudo-R2 = 0.54) compared to other approaches. The EFTA could effectively address the limitations of the Delta algorithm caused by backscatter fluctuations in the shoulder seasons, resulting in more precise estimates of FT events. Furthermore, the inclusion of crop types as plot-level effects within the probabilistic model also slightly improved the soil freezing probability prediction at each monitored plot, with marginal and conditional R2 values of 0.59 and 0.61, respectively. The model accurately classified observed binary ‘frozen’ or ‘thawed’ states with 85.2% accuracy. Strong cross-level interactions were also observed between crop types and the EFTA derived from VH backscatter, indicating that crop type modulated the backscatter response to soil freezing. This study represents the first application of the EFTA and a probabilistic approach to detect frozen soil conditions in agro-forested areas in southern Quebec, Canada.

Surface roughness plays an important role in microwave remote sensing. In the agricultural domain, surface roughness is crucial for soil moisture retrieval methods that use electromagnetic surface scattering or microwave radiative transfer models. Therefore, improved characterization of Soil Surface Roughness (SSR) is of considerable importance. In this study, three approaches, including a standard pin profiler, a LiDAR point cloud generated from an iPhone 12 Pro, and a Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetric point cloud, were applied over 24 surface profiles with different roughness variations to measure surface roughness. The objective of this study was to evaluate the capability of smartphone-based LiDAR technology to measure surface roughness parameters and compare the results of this technique with the more common approaches. Results showed that the iPhone LiDAR technology, when point cloud data is captured in a fine-resolution mode, has a significant correlation with SfM photogrammetry (R2 = 0.70) and a relatively close agreement with pin profiler (R2 = 0.60). However, this accuracy tends to be greater for random surfaces and rough profiles with row structure orientations. The results of this study confirm that smartphone-based LiDAR can be used as a cost-effective, fast, and time-efficient alternative tool for measuring surface roughness, especially for rough, wide, and inaccessible areas.

This study compares the impacts of climate, agriculture and wetlands on the spatio-temporal variability of seasonal daily minimum flows during the period 1930–2019 in 17 watersheds of southern Quebec (Canada). In terms of spatial variability, correlation analysis revealed that seasonal daily minimum flows were mainly negatively correlated with the agricultural surface area in watersheds in spring, summer and fall. In winter, these flows were positively correlated with the wetland surface area and March temperatures but negatively correlated with snowfall. During all four seasons, spatial variability was characterized by higher daily minimum flow values on the north shore (smaller agricultural surface area and larger wetland surface area) than those on the south shore. As for temporal variability, the application of six tests of the long-term trend analysis showed that most agricultural watersheds are characterized by a significant increase in flows during the four seasons due to the reduction in agricultural area, thus favoring water infiltration, and increased rainfall in summer and fall. On the other hand, the reduction in the snowfall resulted in a reduction in summer daily minimum flows observed in several less agricultural watersheds. HIGHLIGHTS Daily minimum flows were primarily correlated with the agricultural area in spring, summer and fall.; Daily minimum flows were primarily correlated with wetlands in winter.; Daily minimum flows increased significantly over time in winter and fall.; Daily minimum flows decreased overall over time in spring and summer.; Flow increases were widespread across all four seasons in the most agricultural watersheds.;

The characteristics of the frost regime (intensity, frequency, and timing) contribute to shaping tree species adaptations and distribution as well as ecosystem productivity and functions. However, climate change increases the variability in extreme events; therefore, the different characteristics of the frost regime may diverge under climate change. Using the BioSim 11 software, we simulated daily air temperature at 512 locations over northeastern North America between 1901–2021 to determine how the spatio-temporal trends in the frost regime varied over this complex landscape and if spatio-temporal trends in extreme climatic events such as frosts are stronger compared to changes in aggregated climate variables such as mean annual air temperature and growing degree-days. We also used an eco-physiological model to conduct a case study focussing on white spruce to determine if trees are currently more exposed to growing season frosts than they were in the past by modelling the timings of budburst using the thermal time model. Our results showed that, at 67% of locations (343 locations), the day of the year of the last frost in spring (minimum daily air temperature

The Lake Saint-Pierre (LSP) is a wide (≈300 km2) and shallow (≈3 m) lake created through a widening of the St. Lawrence River. Each spring, freshet makes it the largest floodplain in the province of Quebec. Agricultural practices in the littoral increase the water turbidity, which deteriorate the habitat’s quality of many fish species. However, measuring spatio-temporal turbidity patterns in the LSP floodplain remain difficult because turbidity is highly variable in space and time. This study aims to evaluate the potential to use an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to measure the water turbidity in the LSP’s floodplain. The results show that the UAV can efficiently measure the variation of turbidity in the LSP with a RMSE of 28.22 FNU. We also compared the turbidity retrieved from UAV with those retrieved from Sentinel-2 observations. The results show that the two models are comparable, even if Sentinel-2 yields better results. However, challenges remain when using UAV for turbidity monitoring, such as software limitations for mosaics creation over large water bodies. Nevertheless, the high spatial and temporal information can provide insights into the complex water turbidity patterns which characterize floodplains. The method could help land use management to improve the water quality of these ecosystems.

Satellite-based passive microwave observations provide the best available continuous observational estimates of global snow water storage due to their broad geographic footprint and low sensitivity to clouds and precipitation. However, these observations are subject to substantial uncertainty due to the complex radiative properties of snow and from interference in forested areas. Physical radiative transfer models can be leveraged to improve the fidelity of these observations and as a data-assimilation tool. In this article, the Dense Media Radiative Transfer model with Multiple Layers (DMRT-ML) is used to simulate snow brightness temperatures from data collected from snow pits excavated during a two-day-long field study performed a temperate forest in the Northeast United States. The simulations are evaluated against surface-based radiometer observations collected at the snow pits. The DMRT-ML is configured with varying complexity to determine the snowpack characteristics most essential toward simulating brightness temperature within a temperate forest with complicated snow stratigraphy. In general, the single-layer configurations were not sufficiently complex to accurately simulate snow brightness temperature without significant tuning. The most accurate simulation was a two-layer configuration with a prescribed ice layer separating the snow layers. This simulation had a root-mean-square error $< $15 K for the 37-GHz frequency. More complicated snowpack stratigraphy configurations did not substantively improve the results over the two-layer model configuration. The DMRT-ML was also used to examine differences between redundant datasets of density and grain size. It was determined that similar snow data collection and radiative transfer model configuration techniques are critical to ensure cross-study comparability.

Climate change is rapidly altering composition, structure, and functioning of the boreal biome, across North America often broadly categorized into ecoregions. The resulting complex changes in different ecoregions present a challenge for efforts to accurately simulate carbon dioxide (CO _2 ) and energy exchanges between boreal forests and the atmosphere with terrestrial ecosystem models (TEMs). Eddy covariance measurements provide valuable information for evaluating the performance of TEMs and guiding their development. Here, we compiled a boreal forest model benchmarking dataset for North America by harmonizing eddy covariance and supporting measurements from eight black spruce ( Picea mariana )-dominated, mature forest stands. The eight forest stands, located in six boreal ecoregions of North America, differ in stand characteristics, disturbance history, climate, permafrost conditions and soil properties. By compiling various data streams, the benchmarking dataset comprises data to parameterize, force, and evaluate TEMs. Specifically, it includes half-hourly, gap-filled meteorological forcing data, ancillary data essential for model parameterization, and half-hourly, gap-filled or partitioned component flux data on CO _2 (net ecosystem production, gross primary production [GPP], and ecosystem respiration [ER]) and energy (latent [LE] and sensible heat [H]) and their daily aggregates screened based on half-hourly gap-filling quality criteria. We present a case study with the Canadian Land Surface Scheme Including Biogeochemical Cycles (CLASSIC) to: (1) demonstrate the utility of our dataset to benchmark TEMs and (2) provide guidance for model development and refinement. Model skill was evaluated using several statistical metrics and further examined through the flux responses to their environmental controls. Our results suggest that CLASSIC tended to overestimate GPP and ER among all stands. Model performance regarding the energy fluxes (i.e., LE and H) varied greatly among the stands and exhibited a moderate correlation with latitude. We identified strong relationships between simulated fluxes and their environmental controls except for H, thus highlighting current strengths and limitations of CLASSIC.

The near-surface soil freeze–thaw (FT) transition is an important factor affecting land-atmosphere exchanges, hydrology and carbon cycles. Thus, effectively monitoring the temporal–spatial changes of soil FT processes is crucial to climate change and environment research. Several approaches have been developed to detect the soil FT state from satellite observations. The discriminant function algorithm (DFA) uses temperature and emissivity information from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer Enhanced (AMSR-E) passive microwave satellite observations. Although it is well validated, it was shown to be insufficiently robust for all land conditions. In this study, we use in-situ observed soil temperature and AMSR-E brightness temperature to parameterize the DFA for soil FT state detection. We use the in-situ soil temperature records at 5 cm selected from available dense networks in the Northern Hemisphere as a reference. Considering the distinction between ascending and descending orbits, two different sets of parameters were acquired for each frequency pair. The validation results indicate that the overall discriminant accuracy of the new function can reach 90%. We further compared the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 discriminant results using the new function to the Soil Moisture Active Passive freeze/thaw product, and a reasonable consistency between them was found.

Geophysical properties of snow are known to be sensitive to climate variability and are of primary importance for hydrological and climatological process simulations. Numerous studies using passive microwaves have attempted to quantify snow from space, but the methods suffer from poor spatial resolution retrievals, combined with a great sensitivity to snow grain morphology. Those issues motivated work using active microwaves that are now core to space mission concept proposals currently under development. However, a clear limitation remains with regards to snow microstructure contribution to backscattering, especially in large depth hoar (DH) layers typical of polar snowpacks. This leads to difficulties retrieving snow water equivalent (SWE) from space or developing radiative transfer models used in assimilation approaches owing to a lack of field observations of snow microstructure. As such, this paper presents an innovative technique to measure various snow grain metrics in the field where micro-photographs of snow grains are taken under angular directional LED lighting. The projected shadows are digitized so that a 3D reconstruction of the snow grains is possible and distribution functions can be proposed for various snow grain metrics and grain types. This device, dLED, has been used in several field campaigns and a very large dataset was collected and is presented in this paper. Distribution histograms from >160,000 digitized grains were produced for each metric for all grains considered as a whole dataset (unclassified), and also for each grain type: (1) defragmented/broken (DF), (2) DH, (3) facets (F), (4) rounds (R), and (5) precipitation particles (PP). We selected distribution functions for each metric per grain time by analyzing L-moment diagrams that summarize the shape of a probability distribution. Our results show that the logarithmic Kappa (LKAP) distribution is well suited to explain the snow grain metric distribution for each grain type. Location, scale and shape parameter values for each distribution are presented and a comparison with values derived from our shortwave infrared laser device, the InfraRed Integrating Sphere (IRIS), is provided. A discussion is presented on the pros and cons of the dLED and the use of the distributions presented in this paper for microwave radiative transfer modeling work.

Arctic vegetation cover has been increasing over the last 40 years, which has been attributed mostly to increases in temperature. Yet, the temporal dimension of this greening remains overlooked as it is often viewed as a monotonic trend. Here, using 11 year long rolling windows on 30 m resolution Landsat data, we examined the temporal variations in greening in north-eastern Canada and its dependence on summer warming. We found two significant and distinct waves of greening, centred around 1996 and 2011, and observed in all land cover types (from boreal forest to arctic tundra). The first wave was more intense and correlated with increasing summer temperature while no such relation was found for the weaker second wave. More specifically, the greening lasted longer at higher elevation during the first wave which translates to a prolonged correlation between greening and summer warming compared to low-altitude vegetation. Our work explored a forsaken complexity of high latitude greening trends and associated drivers and has raised new questions that warrant further research highlighting the importance to include temporal dimension to greening analyses in conjunction with common spatial gradients.

Several statistical methods were used to analyze the spatio-temporal variability of daily minimum extreme flows (DMEF) in 17 watersheds—divided into three homogenous hydroclimatic regions of southern Quebec—during the transitional seasons (spring and fall), during the 1930–2019 period. Regarding spatial variability, there was a clear difference between the south and north shores of the St. Lawrence River, south of 47° N. DMEF were lower in the more agricultural watersheds on the south shore during transitional seasons compared to those on the north shore. A correlation analysis showed that this difference in flows was mainly due to more agricultural areas ((larger area (>20%) on the south than on the north shore (

High-latitude areas are very sensitive to global warming, which has significant impacts on soil temperatures and associated processes governing permafrost evolution. This study aims to improve first-layer soil temperature retrievals during winter. This key surface state variable is strongly affected by snow’s geophysical properties and their associated uncertainties (e.g., thermal conductivity) in land surface climate models. We used infrared MODIS land-surface temperatures (LST) and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) brightness temperatures (Tb) at 10.7 and 18.7 GHz to constrain the Canadian Land Surface Scheme (CLASS), driven by meteorological reanalysis data and coupled with a simple radiative transfer model. The Tb polarization ratio (horizontal/vertical) at 10.7 GHz was selected to improve snowpack density, which is linked to the thermal conductivity representation in the model. Referencing meteorological station soil temperature measurements, we validated the approach at four different sites in the North American tundra over a period of up to 8 years. Results show that the proposed method improves simulations of the soil temperature under snow (Tg) by 64% when using remote sensing (RS) data to constrain the model, compared to model outputs without satellite data information. The root mean square error (RMSE) between measured and simulated Tg under the snow ranges from 1.8 to 3.5 K when using RS data. Improved temporal monitoring of the soil thermal state, along with changes in snow properties, will improve our understanding of the various processes governing soil biological, hydrological, and permafrost evolution.

Detailed angular ground-based L-band brightness temperature (TB) measurements over snow covered frozen soil in a prairie environment were used to parameterize and evaluate an electromagnetic model, the Wave Approach for LOw-frequency MIcrowave emission in Snow (WALOMIS), for seasonal snow. WALOMIS, initially developed for Antarctic applications, was extended with a soil interface model. A Gaussian noise on snow layer thickness was implemented to account for natural variability and thus improve the TB simulations compared to observations. The model performance was compared with two radiative transfer models, the Dense Media Radiative Transfer-Multi Layer incoherent model (DMRT-ML) and a version of the Microwave Emission Model for Layered Snowpacks (MEMLS) adapted specifically for use at L-band in the original one-layer configuration (LS-MEMLS-1L). Angular radiometer measurements (30°, 40°, 50°, and 60°) were acquired at six snow pits. The root-mean-square error (RMSE) between simulated and measured TB at vertical and horizontal polarizations were similar for the three models, with overall RMSE between 7.2 and 10.5 K. However, WALOMIS and DMRT-ML were able to better reproduce the observed TB at higher incidence angles (50° and 60°) and at horizontal polarization. The similar results obtained between WALOMIS and DMRT-ML suggests that the interference phenomena are weak in the case of shallow seasonal snow despite the presence of visible layers with thicknesses smaller than the wavelength, and the radiative transfer model can thus be used to compute L-band brightness temperature.

The observed brightness temperatures (Tb) at 37 GHz from typical moderate density dry snow in mid-latitudes decreases with increasing snow water equivalent (SWE) due to volume scattering of the ground emissions by the overlying snow. At a certain point, however, as SWE increases, the emission from the snowpack offsets the scattering of the sub-nivean emission. In tundra snow, the Tb slope reversal occurs at shallower snow thicknesses. While it has been postulated that the inflection point in the seasonal time series of observed Tb V 37 GHz of tundra snow is controlled by the formation of a thick wind slab layer, the simulation of this effect has yet to be confirmed. Therefore, the Dense Media Radiative Transfer Theory for Multi Layered (DMRT-ML) snowpack is used to predict the passive microwave response from airborne observations over shallow, dense, slab-layered tundra snow. Airborne radiometer observations coordinated with ground-based in situ snow measurements were acquired in the Canadian high Arctic near Eureka, NT, in April 2011. The DMRT-ML was parameterized with the in situ snow measurements using a two-layer snowpack and run in two configurations: a depth hoar and a wind slab dominated pack. With these two configurations, the calibrated DMRT-ML successfully predicted the Tb V 37 GHz response (R correlation of 0.83) when compared with the observed airborne Tb footprints containing snow pits measurements. Using this calibrated model, the DMRT-ML was applied to the whole study region. At the satellite observation scale, observations from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer-Earth Observing System (AMSR-E) over the study area reflected seasonal differences between Tb V 37 GHz and Tb V 19 GHz that supports the hypothesis of the development of an early season volume scattering depth hoar layer, followed by the growth of the late season emission-dominated wind slab layer. This research highlights the necessity to consider the two-part emission characteristics of a slab-dominated tundra snowpack at 37 GHz Tb.

Passive microwave measurements from space are known to be sensitive to the freeze/thaw (F/T) state of the land surface. These measurements are at a coarse spatial resolution (~15–50 km) and the spatial variability of the microwave emissions within a pixel can have important effects on the interpretation of the signal. An L-band ground-based microwave radiometer campaign was conducted in the Canadian Prairies during winter 2014–2015 to examine the spatial variability of surface emissions during frozen and thawed periods. Seven different sites within the Kenaston soil monitoring network were sampled five times between October 2014 and April 2015 with a mobile ground-based L-band radiometer system at approximately monthly intervals. The radiometer measurements showed that in a seemingly homogenous prairie landscape, the spatial variability of brightness temperature (TB) is non-negligible during both frozen and unfrozen soil conditions. Under frozen soil conditions, TB was negatively correlated with soil permittivity (εG). This correlation was related to soil moisture conditions before the main freezing event, showing that the soil ice volumetric content at least partly affects TB. However, because of the effect of snow on L-Band emission, the correlation between TB and εG decreased with snow accumulation. When compared to satellite measurements, the average TB of the seven plots were well correlated with the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) TB with a root mean square difference of 8.1 K and consistent representation of the strong F/T signal (i.e., TB increases and decreases when soil freezing and thawing, respectively). This study allows better quantitative understanding of the spatial variability in L-Band emissions related to landscape F/T, and will help the calibration and validation of satellite-based F/T retrieval algorithms.
