1. Anisotropy of the ferromagnetic L10 phase in the Mn-Al-C alloys induced by high-pressure spark plasma sintering

Abstract

The metastable τ-phase of MnAl equi-atomic compound belongs to a family of ferromagnetic alloys with L10 crystal structure. Stabilization of the phase by adding 2 at. % using manganese carbide (Mn23C6) enhances the magnetization in relation with the increase in lattice volume. It is thus a promising candidate for rare-earth-free permanent magnets. Coercivity of Mn-Al-C alloys being still weak, there is an interest to see to which extend sintering/transformation of the ϵ-phase by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) can increase the coercivity and the anisotropy. The structural and the magnetic properties were studied for samples sintered at 550 °C under uniaxial pressure of 100, 200, 300 and 400 MPa. Coercivity, remanence and anistotropy appears with the sintering pressure. The high pressure applied while sintering produces preferential orientation of the flake-shaped grains which influences the remanence.

Abstract

Structural characterization of the Mn1.3Fe0.65P0.5Si0.5 powder is reported. The rare-earth-free magnetocaloric material was prepared by ball milling and solid-state synthesis. X-ray diffraction data were collected in a wide temperature range across the magnetoelastic phase transition. The lattice parameters and volume fractions of the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases were determined as functions of temperature using Rietveld fitting. The virgin effect (a delay of the phase transition on first cooling) and associated variation of lattice parameters are analyzed on the assumption of elastic constraints imposed on the paramagnetic phase by the defect structure. A simple Landau model with magnetoelastic coupling illustrates the observed first-order behavior.

Abstract

International audience; The kinetics of magnetization reversal in a rare-earth-free Mn-Al-C permanent magnet is reported. The L10-phase material was prepared using a combination of the melt spinning and spark plasma sintering techniques and characterized with a vibrating sample magnetometer. Magnetic relaxation and susceptibility experiments were performed. Magnetic viscosity, fluctuation field and activation volume were measured in a wide temperature range. These data were used to analyze the magnetization reversal and temperature dependence of the coercive field. The thermally activated mechanism of the reversed nucleus formation was confirmed for the intermediate temperatures. The role of wall thickness and crystallite size as additional characteristic lengths in magnetic domain nucleation is discussed.

Abstract

Harvesting and directly converting the largely untapped and omnipresent low-grade heat into electricity has huge technological potential for supplying internet of things (IoT) devices, and wireless sensors in smart buildings applications. To this end, we present a self-actuating, autonomous, thermomagnetic generator (TMG) showing state-of-the-art net power output 4.2 μ W ( 240 μ W cm−3), working over a 35.1 °C temperature difference. The core of our design is made of cheap and easily available piezoelectric buzzers and of commercial LaFeSi magnetocaloric materials from Vacumschmelze. The device self oscillating cycle is studied as a dynamical system with particular attention to the interplay between mechanical and thermal dynamics.

Abstract

Structural and magnetic characterization of Mn–Al–C permanent magnets obtained by spark plasma sintering (SPS) is reported. The transformation from the parent $\epsilon $ -phase to the ferromagnetic $\tau $ -phase occurs simultaneously with the process of sintering. The use of a tungsten carbide crucible enabled us to decrease the sintering temperature, which hampered the precipitation of secondary phases. As a result, sintered samples show higher coercivity as compared with annealed powder. However, the finely milled powder, ensuring better densification, turned out to be more prone to phase decomposition during sintering. The phase constitution of the samples was determined by X-ray diffraction, and magnetic hysteresis loops were recorded using a vibrating sample magnetometer. Scanning electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction were employed to study the microstructure and orientation distribution of grains after SPS. The dependence of coercivity and magnetization on the preparation conditions and sintering temperature is analyzed. To combine good magnetic properties with proper density, further optimization of the production parameters is necessary.

Abstract

The near-equiatomic Mn–Al alloys are considered for possible applications as rare-earth-free permanent magnets due to the existence of a ferromagnetic $\tau $ -phase with $\text{L}1_{0}$ crystal structure and other attractive physical properties. However, this tetragonal phase is metastable and can only be obtained from a hexagonal $\epsilon $ -phase enriched in manganese. The partial atomic disorder can results in antiferromagnetic coupling of the Mn atoms occupying different sublattices. Moreover, the carbon addition, used to improve phase stability and coercivity, leads to the deformation of the unit cell and can affect the Mn–Mn coupling. To clarify this question, a series of magnetic measurements and neutron diffraction (ND) experiments in a wide temperature range was carried out on the Mn55Al45 alloys doped with a small quantity of C. The materials were prepared by melt-spinning and subsequent annealing. Different methods of carbon introduction were tried, the best results were obtained by melting Mn and Al with Mn23C6. The structural and magnetic properties of the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic $\tau $ -phase as well as the precursor $\epsilon $ -phase were determined. The average magnetic moments on two sublattices were analyzed using the Weiss plot of the magnetometric data and the Rietveld refinement of the ND data. The dependence of the magnetic moments on the C content and temperature is reported. Ferrimagnetic behavior of the Mn–Al alloys with excess of manganese, caused by antiferromagnetic coupling and responsible for the decrease of magnetization with increase of Mn content, was confirmed.

Abstract

International audience; Nd(1-x)Zr(x)Fe10Si2 alloys have been prepared in the tetragonal ThMn12-type structure by arc-melting and melt-spinning and then nitrogenated to improve their magnetic properties. For x = 0.4 and 0.6 the Curie temperature and magnetic anisotropy fields increase from 280-300 ºC to about 390 ºC and from 2.8-3 T to 4.5-5 T respectively. The saturation magnetization remains almost unchanged. The nitrogenated powders were processed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) leading to compact pellets, which retain the full nitrogen content and magnetic properties up to 600 ºC, but segregated Fe-Si at elevated temperatures. Nitrogenation and SPS processing are, therefore, appropriate for sintering metastable materials such as (Nd,Zr)Fe10Si2 into compact material without loosing functional properties. This opens a way towards a new family of permanent magnets, lean of critical raw materials.

International audience; This paper presents an implementation of the voltage regulator module (VRM) DC-DC converter operating at 2 MHz using 3 interleaved switching cells whose outputs are magnetically coupled by monolithic intercell transformers (ICT). The innovation comes from the manufacturing of the ICTs. Spinel ferrite is sintered around two copper windings by pulsed electric current sintering (PECS), also called spark plasma sintering (SPS). The manufacturing processes are detailed in this paper, and the ICTs magnetic properties are measured. The high-frequency operation of the converter has been possible thanks to the implementation of GaN components. The power density of the converter is 15 kW/dm 3 .

Abstract

Power integration is a key issue to reduce the volume and weight of electronic devices in power applications. However, transformers produced using classical planar assembly are limited in design. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a relatively new technology to produce multi-material compact systems with higher density using lower sintering temperature. The purpose of this paper is to manufacture cubic-centimeter-sized transformers for the high-frequency application using SPS. The prototype presented in this paper is composed of two spiral copper coils separated by an insulated layer and encapsulated in ferrite powder. The assembly is then co-sintered by SPS. The magnetic material used for the transformers is a nickel–zinc-based ferrite, with copper substitution to allow sintering at low temperatures. The low conductivity of this mixed ferrite ensures operation in the frequency range of 1–20 MHz of our final system. Computed tomography scanning has been used to optimize the design of the co-sintered structures. The effects of the composition of the ferrite and the sintering temperature on the transformation ratio are discussed. It is shown that a ferrite with very low conductivity is required to ensure galvanic insulation, as there is a direct contact between the copper spirals and the magnetic parts.

Abstract

We numerically study the design of a thermomagnetic generator aimed to convert a heat flow into electrical energy. The device uses the variation of magnetization of a magnetocaloric material (MCM) along a cyclic transformation between the hot and the cold sources. The magnetic energy is transformed into mechanical energy via the magnetic forces and eventually into electrical energy through an electromechanical transducer. Firstly, we work-out the optimal size of the cantilever in order to achieve the self-oscillation of the MCM between the two heat sources. Eventually, using finite element calculations, we compare the efficiency of a piezoelectric transducer (PZT 5a) with that of a set of coils in order to convert the mechanical into electrical energy. The piezoelectrics and the coils recover 0.025% and 0.018% respectively of the available mechanical energy (116 mJ/cm3). The possible strategies to achieve a better performance are discussed in theconclusion.

Abstract

International audience; We estimate the power and efficiency of a thermal energy harvesting thermodynamic Brayton cycle using a first and second order magnetocaloric materials as active substance. The thermodynamic cycle was computed using a simple thermal exchange model and an equation of state deduced from a phenomenological Landau model. For the first and second order materials, narrow and high frequency cycles are optimum and give similar performances. Considering technological issues hindering the increase of frequency, we introduced a more detailed approach where we take into account the time needed to switch the material between two heat reservoirs. We show that the first order material equation of state leads thermodynamic cycle shape keeping it closer to the optimum cycle. Conditions to improve the performance of second order materials are discussed. In addition, we infer key remarks for prototype design regarding the power density and efficiency reachable in different configurations.

Abstract

International audience; Dense Mn-Al-C permanent magnets have been produced using melt-spinning and spark plasma sintering techniques. The samples have been magnetically characterized from 4 K to 300 K in a field of up to 14 T. The ahysteretic parts of magnetization loops were analyzed within a model for the approach to saturation which allows for possible crystallographic texture. The saturation magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy have been determined taking into account the estimated fraction of ferromagnetic phase. The obtained magnetic parameters have been compared with available theoretical and experimental data.

Abstract

Cu–Al–Ni-based shape memory material was elaborated by spark plasma sintering method from the micron and submicron sized particles prepared by spark-erosion method in liquid argon from preliminary melted master alloy with the composition of Cu-13.01Al-3.91Ni-0.37Ti-0.24Cr wt%. The effects of processing parameters, mainly temperature of sintering and sintering time on the martensitic transformation and microstructure of the sintered compacts were investigated. Both martensitic phases (18R and 2H) available for Cu–Al–Ni alloy of such composition as well as γ and α phases were found in sintered samples. Their amounts depend on the temperature of sintering and seem to be strongly affecting the Ms point. Although the powder has already sintered at 390 °C the best quality of samples were found for samples sintered at 650–700 °C.

Abstract

International audience; Microwave assisted magnetization reversal are studied in the bulk bilayer exchange coupled system. We investigate the nonlinear magnetization reversal dynamics in a perpendicular exchange spring media using Landau-Lifshitz equation. In the limit of the infinite thickness of the system, the propagation field leads the reversal of the system. The reduction of the switching field and the magnetization profile in the extended system are studied numerically. The possibility to study the dynamics analytically is discussed and an approximation where two P-modes are coupled by an interaction field is presented. The ansatz used for the interaction field is validated by comparison with the numerical results. This approach is shown to be equivalent to two exchange coupled macrospins.

Abstract

International audience; Hard-soft composite (BaFe12O19:Mg0.1Ni0.3Zn0.6Fe2O4 (2:1) films, were deposited by 'Pulsed Laser Deposition' (PLD) technique on Si (100) substrate using different deposition time - 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Influence of deposition time on structural and magnetic properties were studied via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). XRD confirms the presence of soft and hard phases in all the prepared thin films. Small amount of secondary phase - Fe2O3 is also detected in all the thin films except for the deposition time - 90 mins. With deposition time average grain diameter of both hard (BaFe12O19) and soft (Mg0.1Ni0.3Zn0.6Fe2O4) phase increases. Increase in the distance between the magnetic ions (Ni2+ and Fe3+) at tetrahedral (A) and octahedral [B] site leads to increase in the hopping length at A and B site except for the the deposition time of 60 minutes. Magnetic measurements shows that the coercivity and magnetization of the prepared thin films respectively ranges between 112.07 - 213.03 Oe and 1.4 x 10-7 - 3.15 x 10-7 Am2.

Abstract

International audience; Two spices trivalent transition metal ions, nonmagnetic Al 3+ , Bi3+ and magnetic Cr3+,Mn3+ substituted barium hexaferrite powders are synthesised via dynamic hydrothermalmethod then calcinated at different temperatures. Powder XRD patterns analysis andRietveld refinement indicate magnetoplumbite-type crystalline phase. The crystallitesize calculated using Scherer's formula varies from 153 to 248 nm as it is affected bythe ionic radius of trivalent metal ions and calcination temperatures. The morphologicalfeatures show agglomerations of spherical-shaped particles with an average size of400 ± 50 nm for BaBiFe11 O19 and hexagonal-shaped particles 1-2μm for the othersubstitutions. Magnetic studies show a ferromagnetic behaviour for all samples. Thenonmagnetic Al3+, Bi3+ substituted materials have lower saturation magnetization Ms and remanence Mr than the magnetic substitutions Cr3+, n3+. These results reveal that Ms and Mr are related to the magnetic moment of each metallic ion and its distribution in the lattice. For magnetic substitution, Ms of manganese substitution (61.10 emu/g) is found higher than that of chromium (60.33 emu/g) since Mn3+ has a magnetic moment of 5μB greater than Cr3+ with 3μB. Coercivity Hc and maximum energy product (BH)max determined from M-H loops exhibit an increasing trend with calcination temperature as they are related to the crystallite size. Hc and (BH)max of BaMnFe11O19 are found maximum 0.426 T and 7.47 kJ.m-3, respectively.

Abstract

International audience; We estimate the efficiency and power of a thermal energy harvesting thermodynamic cycle using a magnetocaloric material as active substance. The thermodynamic cycle is computed using an equation of state, either extrapolated from experimental data or deduced using a phenomenological Landau model. The magnetic work is then compared to the maximum work. Afterwards power is estimated using a simple thermal exchange model. Simulations of different cycles for different working points illustrate the tradeoff between power and efficiency.

Abstract

International audience; The metastable τ-phase of MnAl equi-atomic compound belongs to a family of ferromagnetic alloys with L1 0 crystal structure. Stabilization of the phase by adding 2 at. % using manganese carbide (Mn 23 C 6) enhances the magnetization in relation with the increase in lattice volume. It is thus a promising candidate for rare-earth-free permanent magnets. Coercivity of Mn-Al-C alloys being still weak, there is an interest to see to which extend sintering/transformation of the-phase by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) can increase the coercivity and the anisotropy. The structural and the magnetic properties were studied for samples sintered at 550 • C under uniaxial pressure of 100, 200, 300 and 400 MPa. Coercivity, remanence and anistotropy appears with the sintering pressure. The high pressure applied while sintering produces preferential orientation of the flake-shaped grains which influences the remanence.

Abstract

A reference Zr57Cu20Al10Ni8Ti5 bulk metallic glass as well as a number of alloys obtained by addition of refractory elements Ta or W (combined with Sn) to the main Zr–Cu–Al–Ni system were elaborated by mould casting, twin roll casting and planar flow casting. The chemical compositions were chosen according to empirical rules, and as combinations of the binary eutectics for strongly interacting elements, taking into account the corresponding enthalpies of mixing. Optical microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, differential thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy and tensile mechanical testing were used to characterize the fully and partially obtained amorphous materials. Correlation of glass forming ability, thermodynamic parameters, crystallization behaviour and mechanical properties with chemical composition and production technology is discussed.

International audience; Magnetocaloric materials with composition of Mn 1.3 Fe 0.65 P 0.5 Si 0.5 have been prepared by ball milling and solid-state reaction methods and consolidated using powder annealing, and conventional and spark plasma sintering. Magnetic and calorimetric measurements show remarkable differences upon first cooling, and slight differences on second and further coolings between the samples prepared by different synthesis routes. Further measurements using Hall probe imaging in high magnetic field have been also carried out. As-prepared samples have been cooled down just above the critical temperature, and the first phase transition has been induced by application of a magnetic field. Bulk samples show staircase isothermal magnetization curves whereas powders show smoother transition curves.

Abstract

Shape memory materials with specific microstructure can be obtained from amorphous precursors. Rapidly solidified amorphous and crystalline–amorphous ribbons have been produced by planar flow casting for a number of multicomponent TiNi-based alloys of pseudobinary 50:50 and 55:45 compositions with substitutions of Zr, Hf, Nb for Ti and Cu, Co, Pd, Ag, Al for Ni. The glass transition and crystallization behavior of the amorphous phase as well as the martensitic transformations in the crystallized materials have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. To control the crystal structure at different stages of crystallization, X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy were used. The effects of crystallization conditions and the resulting microstructural state on the martensitic transformation characteristics have been investigated. The transformation temperature intervals are shown to depend on the mean size of the parent phase crystals.

Abstract

Rapid solidification methods (planar flow casting and twin roll casting) have been used to improve and simplify processing of shape memory alloys. Our goal is to synthesize amorphous as-cast materials and then near-net shaping can be obtained while working in the supercooled liquid temperature region. Materials are thereafter crystallized in order to recover a reversible austenite–martensite transformation. Alloying equiatomic Ni–Ti intermetallic compound with selected elements leads to better glass forming ability (GFA). Despite the fact that compositional requirements for obtaining thermoelastic reversible martensitic transformation and glass formation are different and contradictory, the pseudo-binary alloys developed by substitution of Zr, Hf for Ti, and Cu, Co, Pd, Sn for Ni are good candidates to exhibit both phenomena. We report here a choice of compositions, which after fast cooling, are amorphous and demonstrate a superplastic behaviour in the ΔT (Tx − Tg) region. After an adequate thermal treatment, a martensitic phase is obtained for some compositions, and such alloys demonstrate shape memory and superelastic properties.

Abstract

Rapidly solidified samples of Ti 45 Zr 5 Ni 20 Cu 25 Sn 5 (at.%) alloy have been produced using the planar flow casting, twin roll casting and injection casting techniques. Depending on the cooling rate, different structural states are formed: amorphous, crystalline or mixed. The glass transition and crystallization behaviour of the amorphous phase as well as the martensitic transformation in the crystallized material have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The effect of crystallization conditions and resulting microstructure on the martensitic transformation characteristics has been investigated.

Abstract

Rapidly solidified amorphous and crystalline-amorphous ribbons have been produced from a number of quaternary Ti 50+z-x (Zr,Hf) x Ni 50-z-y Cu y alloys where z=(-5,0,5). Structural states were checked by XRD, crystallization behaviour of amorphous phase and martensitic transformations in crystalline material were studied by DSC. The glass transition and crystallization temperatures have been measured at different heating rates, and the crystallization activation energy for each composition and heat event has been calculated. Isothermal crystallization gives an alternative method of determining the activation energy according to the Arrhenius equation. Contradictory requirements for the conditions of martensitic transformation and good glass forming ability is discussed.

Abstract

Development of multicomponent TiNi-based shape memory alloys from initial amorphous state continue attracts attention due to unique mechanical properties in the supercooled liquid region and specific microstructure formed after crystallisation. Amorphous ribbons were produced by single-roll casting technique. Those ribbons demonstrate high shaping ability near glass transition temperature T G . The material structure was examined by the XRD, TEM/SAD techniques; the thermodynamic properties were studied by DSC; the mechanical and functional (shape memory, superelasticity) properties were studied in tension. The effect of crystallisation conditions and the resulting microstructural state (partly or fully crystallised, precipitates accompanying crystallisation) on the martensite transformation and associated functional properties is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; This work deals with the Ni-Zn-Cu ferrites for energy conversion. Studies have already shown the beneficial effects of substituting some of divalent ions by Co 2+. Particularly, it appears that with a small amount of cobalt, it is possible to increase the permeability and to reduce magnetic losses. In this paper, our goal is to report if these properties are still valid with another manufacturing process: the spark plasma sintering. This process can be used for reactive sintering where it is possible to synthesize and to sinter the material in a single step in order to greatly reduce production time.

International audience; Rare-earth-free permanent magnets returned to the forefront of scientific and technological concerns about the environmental and economical issues. The emergence of new markets, control of costs and availability of raw materials encourage to look for alternative materials containing much less, or no, rare earth elements selected from the most common and most available. The hexaferrite doped with lanthanum and cobalt present interesting properties to succeed the rare-earth magnets. The structural and magnetic properties of a strontium hexaferrite are presented in this paper, and two models are developed in order to correlate structural and magnetic properties.

Abstract

International audience; Soft magnetic Mg 0.1 Ni 0.3 Zn 0.6 Fe 2 O 4 and hard magnetic BaFe 12 O 19 bulk nanocrystalline ferrites were synthesized using the sol-gel auto-combustion method, and were used as targets to deposit soft-hard thin films by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. Various soft-hard thin films with different preparation conditions were deposited on Si (100) substrate, which can be effectively utilized to get better magnetic properties. The prepared films were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic measurements. XRD confirms the presence of soft and hard phases in the thin films. Coercivity of the prepared films ranges from 1.67 to 2.66 kA/m. AFM images show clustering of grains at the film surface with a characteristic columnar growth.

Abstract

A series of the Ti-Ni-Me (Me: Cu, Co, Zr, Hf, Re) and Cu-Al-Me (Me: Ni. Mn, Ti, Nb) rapidly solidified ribbons have been produced by a planar flow casting. Calorimetric and thermomechanical investigations as well as XRD, TEM/SAD and metallography observations have been performed. The martensitic transformation characteristics of the ribbons are studied and compared to those of bulk samples. The functional properties have been measured for unidirectional deformation in cooling/heating cycles under a fixed load (the shape memory schema), and in tension at fixed temperature and subsequent heating/cooling stages (the superelastic, shape memory and reversion stress schemes). Microstructure features and their influence on the martensitic transformation are analyzed with respect to the variation of functional properties.

Abstract

The TiNi- and CuAl-based shape memory alloy thin films and wear/corrosion resistant surface coats have been produced by the ion-plasma deposition method with an arc dispersion of the cathode/target. This technique was widely used for production of the coats from a sprayed pure metal or a single-phase alloy. We have offered to use this process for dispersion of the heterophase alloys like shape memory alloys. The arguments for choosing of this technique are discussed with respect to creation of the conditions for preservation not only chemical composition, but also phase structure of an alloy in a covering, thus the shape memory/superelastic effects to be kept in a coat.

Abstract

International audience; Structural and magnetic characterization of isotropic Mn-Al-C bulk samples obtained by spark plasma sintering (SPS) is reported. This technique, to our knowledge, has not been used for preparation of Mn-Al-based permanent magnets yet. Transformation from the parent epsilon-phase to the ferromagnetic tau- phase occurred on heating in the process of sintering. The phase constitution of melt-spun precursors and consolidated samples was determined by X-ray diffraction. Magnetic hysteresis loops were recorded using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The compositional dependence of coercivity, magnetization and density of sintered materials is analyzed. To combine good magnetic properties with proper densification, further optimization of the production parameters is necessary.

Abstract

International audience; Two-phase nano-powders based on Ba hexaferrite with addition of Mn have been obtained by a sol-gel auto-combustion method. Composition dependence of magnetic and structural properties has been studied using magnetic measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The observed decrease of saturation magnetization and coercivity with increase of Mn content is mainly attributed to the presence of Fe oxide as a result of Ba depletion. SEM images show chemically homogeneous, non-regular shaped agglomerated nano-particles (50-200 nm).

Abstract

International audience; Structural and magnetic characterization of Mn(x−y)Al(100−x−y)C(2y) (x = {50, 55}; y = {0, 1}) melt-spun ribbons is reported. To obtain the metastable ferromagnetic τ-phase, rapidly solidified alloys were annealed either in a vacuum furnace at 823 K or directly in the vibrating sample magnetometer under applied magnetic field. Optimal magnetic properties were demonstrated by Mn54Al44C2 samples proved to be single-phase with a coercivity of 0.19 T measured in both cases. For this composition the structural ε→τ phase transformation has been magnetically detected at 786 K, Curie temperature of τ-phase (Tc = 592 K, Tp = 610 K) has been determined using mean field approximations in ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions. Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction spectra was employed to analyse the phase constitution of annealed alloys, lattice parameters as a function of chemical composition and mean grain size for the phases involved.

Abstract

International audience; Structural characterization of the Mn 1.3 Fe 0.65 P 0.5 Si 0.5 powder is reported. The rare-earth-free magnetocaloric material was prepared by ball milling and solid-state synthesis. X-ray diffraction data were collected in a wide temperature range across the magnetoelastic phase transition. The lattice parameters and volume fractions of the paramagnetic and ferromagnetic phases were determined as functions of temperature using Rietveld fitting. The virgin effect (a delay of the phase transition on first cooling) and associated variation of lattice parameters are analyzed on the assumption of elastic constraints imposed on the paramagnetic phase by the defect structure. A simple Landau model with magnetoelastic coupling illustrates the observed first-order behavior.

Abstract

International audience; We report on the magnetic field induced isothermal entropy change, Δs(Ha, T), of W-type ferrite with CoZn substitution. Entropy measurements are performed by direct calorimetry. Single crystals of the composition BaCo$_0.62$Zn$_1.38$Fe$_16$O$_27$, prepared by the flux method, are measured at different fixed temperatures under an applied field perpendicular and parallel to the c axis. At 296 K one deduces a value of K$_1$ = 8.7 × 104 J m$^−3$ for the first anisotropy constant, which is in good agreement with the literature. The spin reorientation transition temperature is estimated to take place between 200 and 220 K.

Abstract

High temperature shape memory alloys have received a large interest for many years but none of the systems studied so far has led to industrial applica- tions. Those alloys are expected to develop an actuating role in high temperature environment as for example aircraft turbines. Lots of criteria are required in or- der to substitute or optimize heavy existing actuators. Here are presented a few results obtained with the system hafnium-palladium, not so documented for the moment, that develops a martensitic transformation at around 773 K. According to the characteristics of very well-known alloys such as NiTi, some compositions around the equiatomic are explored. The main objective of our work is to know the influence of a stoechiometry gap on the microstructure of the alloys and the martensitic transformation.

Abstract

Bulk metallic glasses have a very high corrosion resistance and mechanical strength. Bulk metallic glasses show elastic-perfectly plastic behavior with an extended region of elastic strain (≈ 2%). But at room temperature their macroscopic plasticity is weak even though a local plastic strain is observed in shear bands. A relaxation analysis allowed studying micro-mechanisms of plastic deformation and estimating the apparent activation volume (≈ 2000 ³). Высокопрочные стекла на основе металлов имеют очень высокие характеристики коррозионной устойчивости и механической проч­ности. Их деформирование является абсолютно упругопластическим с протяженным участком упругости (≈ 2%). Однако при комнатной температуре их макропластичность проявляется слабо, несмотря на наличие локальных пластических деформаций в поло­сах скольжения. Анализ релаксации напряжений позволил исследовать микромеханиз­мы пластического деформирования и оценить значение объема активации (≈ 2000 ³).

Abstract

International audience; Ferrites have always been a subject of great interest from point of view of magnetic application, since the fist compass to present date. In contrast, the scientific interest for iron based magnetic oxides decreased after Ørsted discovery as they where replaced by coil as magnetizing sources. Neel discovery of ferrimagnetism boosted again interest and leads to strong developments during two decades before being of less interest. Recently, the evolution of power electronics toward higher frequency, the downsizing of ceramics microstucture to nanometer scale, the increasing price of rare-earth elements and the development of magnetocaloric materials put light again on ferrites. A review on three ferrite families is given herein: harder nanostructured Ba2+Fe12O19 magnet processed by spark plasma sintering, magnetocaloric effect associated to the spin transition reorientation of W-ferrite and low temperature spark plasma sintered Ni-Zn-Cu ferrites for high frequency power applications.

Abstract

International audience; Ba2Fe12O19 (BaO.6Fe2O3) films have been grown on (0001) sapphire substrate using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Prepared films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray reflectivity (XRR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and magnetic measurements. XRD confirms the formation of Ba2Fe12O19 phase, whereas presence of Fe2O3 was also identified. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows the signature of all the elements present in the barium ferrite. XRR data show the thickness of the film is ~ 24.2 nm with top layer roughness of ~ 3.7 nm. AFM measurement suggests the formation of clusters with average roughness of ~ 3.9 nm. Magnetic measurements of the target reveal its anisotropic nature with coercivity values: 0.23 and 0.24 T, obtained along two orthogonal directions. For the prepared thin film, the obtained coercivity ~ 80 mT and saturation induction 0.13 T are lower than the usual values obtained for Ba2Fe12O19 compound (coercivity and saturation induction values are 0.19 Tesla and 0.48 T respectively), can be ascribed to the presence of Fe2O3 phase.
