The heart beats approximately 100,000 times per day in humans, imposing substantial energetic demands on cardiac muscle. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an essential energy source for normal function of cardiac muscle during each beat, as it powers ion transport, intracellular Ca2+ handling, and actin-myosin cross-bridge cycling. Despite this, the impact of excitation-contraction coupling on the intracellular ATP concentration ([ATP]i) in myocytes is poorly understood. Abstract

In recent years, time correlators have received renewed attention, especially under the guise of identifiers of nonclassical correlations. However, the physical interpretation of these objects, and more generally of multi-times variables, remains ambiguous, which may be one of the reasons why they are so difficult to measure. In this work, we introduce and advance the perspective that a two-time correlator should actually be regarded as an average involving a novel single physical observable, one that cannot be rephrased in terms of the primitive ones, according to quantum principles. In particular, we provide examples showing that the presumed constituents of a two-time correlator and the proposed two-time operator itself cannot be simultaneous elements of the physical reality., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

3. Testing trajectory-based determinism via time probability distributions

Abstract

It is notorious that quantum mechanics (QM) cannot predict well-defined values for all physical quantities. Less well-known, however, is the fact that QM is unable to furnish probabilistic predictions even in emblematic scenarios such as the double-slit experiment. In contrast, equipped with postulate trajectories, Bohmian mechanics (BM) has inherited more predictive power. It follows that, contrary to common belief, QM and BM are not just different interpretations but distinct theories. This work formalizes the aforementioned assertions and illustrates them through three case studies: (i) free particle, (ii) free fall under a uniform gravitational field, and (iii) the double-slit experiment. Specifically, we introduce a prescription for constructing a flight-time probability distribution within generic trajectory-equipped theories. We then apply our formalism to BM and derive probability distributions that are unreachable by QM. Our results can, in principle, be tested against real experiments, thereby assessing the validity of Bohmian trajectories., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Comments are welcome

Abstract

Cardiac dysfunction is a hallmark of aging in humans and mice. Here we report that a two-week treatment to restore youthful Bridging Integrator 1 (BIN1) levels in the hearts of 24-month-old mice rejuvenates cardiac function and substantially reverses the aging phenotype. Our data indicate that age-associated overexpression of BIN1 occurs alongside dysregulated endosomal recycling and disrupted trafficking of cardiac CaV1.2 and type 2 ryanodine receptors. These deficiencies affect channel function at rest and their upregulation during acute stress. In vivo echocardiography reveals reduced systolic function in old mice. BIN1 knockdown using an adeno-associated virus serotype 9 packaged shRNA-mBIN1 restores the nanoscale distribution and clustering plasticity of ryanodine receptors and recovers Ca2+ transient amplitudes and cardiac systolic function toward youthful levels. Enhanced systolic function correlates with increased phosphorylation of the myofilament protein cardiac myosin binding protein-C. These results reveal BIN1 knockdown as a novel therapeutic strategy to rejuvenate the aging myocardium.

5. Computing Star Discrepancies with Numerical Black-Box Optimization Algorithms

Abstract

The $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy is a measure for the regularity of a finite set of points taken from $[0,1)^d$. Low discrepancy point sets are highly relevant for Quasi-Monte Carlo methods in numerical integration and several other applications. Unfortunately, computing the $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy of a given point set is known to be a hard problem, with the best exact algorithms falling short for even moderate dimensions around 8. However, despite the difficulty of finding the global maximum that defines the $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy of the set, local evaluations at selected points are inexpensive. This makes the problem tractable by black-box optimization approaches. In this work we compare 8 popular numerical black-box optimization algorithms on the $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy computation problem, using a wide set of instances in dimensions 2 to 15. We show that all used optimizers perform very badly on a large majority of the instances and that in many cases random search outperforms even the more sophisticated solvers. We suspect that state-of-the-art numerical black-box optimization techniques fail to capture the global structure of the problem, an important shortcoming that may guide their future development. Abstract

A measurement of the top quark pair-production cross section in the lepton + jets decay channel is presented. It is based on 4.6 fb - 1 of s = 7 TeV p p collision data collected during 2011 by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. A three-class, multidimensional event classifier based on support vector machines is used to differentiate t t ¯ events from backgrounds. The t t ¯ production cross section is found to be σ t t ¯ = 168.5 ± 0.7 ( stat ) - 5.9 + 6.2 ( syst ) - 3.2 + 3.4 ( lumi ) pb . The result is consistent with the Standard Model prediction based on QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order.

Abstract

CaV1.2 channels are critical players in cardiac excitation-contraction coupling, yet we do not understand how they are affected by an important therapeutic target of heart failure drugs and regulator of blood pressure, angiotensin II. Signaling through Gq-coupled AT1 receptors, angiotensin II triggers a decrease in PIP2, a phosphoinositide component of the plasma membrane (PM) and known regulator of many ion channels. PIP2 depletion suppresses CaV1.2 currents in heterologous expression systems but the mechanism of this regulation and whether a similar phenomenon occurs in cardiomyocytes is unknown. Previous studies have shown that CaV1.2 currents are also suppressed by angiotensin II. We hypothesized that these two observations are linked and that PIP2 stabilizes CaV1.2 expression at the PM and angiotensin II depresses cardiac excitability by stimulating PIP2 depletion and destabilization of CaV1.2 expression. We tested this hypothesis and report that CaV1.2 channels in tsA201 cells are destabilized after AT1 receptor-triggered PIP2 depletion, leading to their dynamin-dependent endocytosis. Likewise, in cardiomyocytes, angiotensin II decreased t-tubular CaV1.2 expression and cluster size by inducing their dynamic removal from the sarcolemma. These effects were abrogated by PIP2 supplementation. Functional data revealed acute angiotensin II reduced CaV1.2 currents and Ca2+ transient amplitudes thus diminishing excitation-contraction coupling. Finally, mass spectrometry results indicated whole-heart levels of PIP2 are decreased by acute angiotensin II treatment. Based on these observations, we propose a model wherein PIP2 stabilizes CaV1.2 membrane lifetimes, and angiotensin II-induced PIP2 depletion destabilizes sarcolemmal CaV1.2, triggering their removal, and the acute reduction of CaV1.2 currents and contractility.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The limited temporal completeness and taxonomic accuracy of species lists, made available in a traditional manner in scientific publications, has always represented a problem. These lists are invariably limited to a few taxonomic groups and do not represent up-to-date knowledge of all species and classifications. In this context, the Brazilian megadiverse fauna is no exception, and the Catálogo Taxonômico da Fauna do Brasil (CTFB) (http://fauna.jbrj.gov.br/), made public in 2015, represents a database on biodiversity anchored on a list of valid and expertly recognized scientific names of animals in Brazil. The CTFB is updated in near real time by a team of more than 800 specialists. By January 1, 2024, the CTFB compiled 133,691 nominal species, with 125,138 that were considered valid. Most of the valid species were arthropods (82.3%, with more than 102,000 species) and chordates (7.69%, with over 11,000 species). These taxa were followed by a cluster composed of Mollusca (3,567 species), Platyhelminthes (2,292 species), Annelida (1,833 species), and Nematoda (1,447 species). All remaining groups had less than 1,000 species reported in Brazil, with Cnidaria (831 species), Porifera (628 species), Rotifera (606 species), and Bryozoa (520 species) representing those with more than 500 species. Analysis of the CTFB database can facilitate and direct efforts towards the discovery of new species in Brazil, but it is also fundamental in providing the best available list of valid nominal species to users, including those in science, health, conservation efforts, and any initiative involving animals. The importance of the CTFB is evidenced by the elevated number of citations in the scientific literature in diverse areas of biology, law, anthropology, education, forensic science, and veterinary science, among others.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine and evaluate the effect of the g4467 G>A SNP on the expression profile of IFN-γ and miRNA 125b in dairy buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) with and without hemoparasites. Molecular diagnosis was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) on 145 buffaloes for Babesia spp., Trypanosoma vivax, and Anaplasma marginale. All buffaloes were investigated for the presence or absence of the polymorphism and genotyped using the restriction enzyme. Real-time PCR (RT-qPCR) quantified the expression of IFN-γ and miRNA 125b. All buffaloes were negative for Babesia spp. and A. marginale, and only 12 were positive for T. vivax. The genotypes GG, GA, and AA were found in proportions of 3.4%, 2.1%, and 94.5%, respectively. Abstract

This paper presents studies of Bose–Einstein correlations (BEC) in proton–proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, using data from the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Data were collected in a special low-luminosity configuration with a minimum-bias trigger and a high-multiplicity track trigger, accumulating integrated luminosities of 151 μ b- 1 and 8.4 nb- 1, respectively. The BEC are measured for pairs of like-sign charged particles, each with | η| < 2.5 , for two kinematic ranges: the first with particle pT> 100 MeV and the second with particle pT> 500 MeV. The BEC parameters, characterizing the source radius and particle correlation strength, are investigated as functions of charged-particle multiplicity (up to 300) and average transverse momentum of the pair (up to 1.5 GeV). The double-differential dependence on charged-particle multiplicity and average transverse momentum of the pair is also studied. The BEC radius is found to be independent of the charged-particle multiplicity for high charged-particle multiplicity (above 100), confirming a previous observation at lower energy. This saturation occurs independent of the transverse momentum of the pair.

17. Entanglement dynamics of spins using a few complex trajectories

Abstract

In this work, we consider two spins initially prepared in a product of coherent states and study their entanglement dynamics due to a general interacting Hamiltonian. We adopt an approach that allowed the derivation of a semiclassical formula for the linear entropy of the reduced density operator, assumed as an entanglement quantifier. The resulting expression depends on sets of four trajectories, originated from the underlying classical description, and having mutually connected final phase-space points. Such classical elements, which are capable to reproduce the quantum entanglement even for long values of propagation time, arise when we assume a proper analytical continuation of the classical phase space onto a complex domain. We apply this theory to a particular physical system, showing that taking into account only a few sets of complex trajectories is enough to get an excellent agreement between the semiclassical linear entropy of the reduced density operator and its quantum counterpart., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The production cross-section of a top quark in association with a W boson is measured using proton–proton collisions at s=8TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2fb-1, and was collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The analysis is performed in the single-lepton channel. Events are selected by requiring one isolated lepton (electron or muon) and at least three jets. A neural network is trained to separate the tW signal from the dominant tt¯ background. The cross-section is extracted from a binned profile maximum-likelihood fit to a two-dimensional discriminant built from the neural-network output and the invariant mass of the hadronically decaying W boson. The measured cross-section is σtW=26±7pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Abstract

The production cross-section of a top quark in association with a W boson is measured using proton–proton collisions at s=8TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.2fb-1, and was collected in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The analysis is performed in the single-lepton channel. Events are selected by requiring one isolated lepton (electron or muon) and at least three jets. A neural network is trained to separate the tW signal from the dominant tt¯ background. The cross-section is extracted from a binned profile maximum-likelihood fit to a two-dimensional discriminant built from the neural-network output and the invariant mass of the hadronically decaying W boson. The measured cross-section is σtW=26±7pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model expectation.

Abstract

A measurement of the Bs0→J/ψϕ decay parameters using 80.5fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the ATLAS detector from 13 Te proton–proton collisions at the LHC is presented. The measured parameters include the CP-violating phase ϕs, the width difference Δ Γ s between the Bs0 meson mass eigenstates and the average decay width Γ s. The values measured for the physical parameters are combined with those from 19.2fb-1 of 7 and 8 Te data, leading to the following: ϕs=-0.087±0.036(stat.)±0.021(syst.)radΔΓs=0.0657±0.0043(stat.)±0.0037(syst.)ps-1Γs=0.6703±0.0014(stat.)±0.0018(syst.)ps-1Results for ϕs and Δ Γ s are also presented as 68% confidence level contours in the ϕs–Δ Γ s plane. Furthermore the transversity amplitudes and corresponding strong phases are measured. ϕs and Δ Γ s measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions.

Abstract

The integrated fiducial cross-section and unfolded differential jet mass spectrum of high transverse momentum Z→bb‾ decays are measured in Zγ events in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV. The data analysed were collected between 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1fb−1. Photons are required to have a transverse momentum pT>175GeV. The Z→bb‾ decay is reconstructed using a jet with pT>200GeV, found with the anti-kt R=1.0 jet algorithm, and groomed to remove soft and wide-angle radiation and to mitigate contributions from the underlying event and additional proton–proton collisions. Two different but related measurements are performed using two jet grooming definitions for reconstructing the Z→bb‾ decay: trimming and soft drop. These algorithms differ in their experimental and phenomenological implications regarding jet mass reconstruction and theoretical precision. To identify Z bosons, b-tagged R=0.2 track-jets matched to the groomed large-R calorimeter jet are used as a proxy for the b-quarks. The signal yield is determined from fits of the data-driven background templates to the different jet mass distributions for the two grooming methods. Integrated fiducial cross-sections and unfolded jet mass spectra for each grooming method are compared with leading-order theoretical predictions. The results are found to be in good agreement with Standard Model expectations within the current statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Abstract

The integrated fiducial cross-section and unfolded differential jet mass spectrum of high transverse momentum Z→bb‾ decays are measured in Zγ events in proton–proton collisions at s=13TeV. The data analysed were collected between 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 36.1fb−1. Photons are required to have a transverse momentum pT>175GeV. The Z→bb‾ decay is reconstructed using a jet with pT>200GeV, found with the anti-kt R=1.0 jet algorithm, and groomed to remove soft and wide-angle radiation and to mitigate contributions from the underlying event and additional proton–proton collisions. Two different but related measurements are performed using two jet grooming definitions for reconstructing the Z→bb‾ decay: trimming and soft drop. These algorithms differ in their experimental and phenomenological implications regarding jet mass reconstruction and theoretical precision. 32. Shape and topology optimisation of external flows

Abstract

The work in this thesis develops methods for aerodynamic topology optimisation (ATO), in particular, and, in general the automatic exploration of physical design spaces. To be suitable for aerospace applications, the framework developed in this work is compatible with boundary fitted meshes; which contrasts with recent methods for ATO which do not maintain an explicit boundary. This makes this work compatible with existing aerodynamic shape optimisation frameworks, and gives those methods the potential to explore radically new designs though topology optimisation. Development of a parameterisation with a smooth and intuitive geometric response in two and three dimensions is one of the key requirements for TO and the primary focus of this thesis. The new parameterisation, the restricted snakes volume of solid (RSVS), is defined as the profile minimising the length and containing the area specified by a set of volume fractions defined on a grid. This formulation is shown to extend to any layout of volume fractions, and, an analytical equivalence to NURBS is analytically derived. The parameterisation is extended to three dimensions following the natural reformulation of its definition as the geometry minimising area under volume constraints. Like the two dimensional parameterisation, the 3D-RSVS is shown to have intrinsic links to methods in discrete differential geometry. The new parameterisation is integrated into a modular optimisation framework which supports gradient and agent based optimisation; with geometric, structural and aerodynamic objective functions. The framework is shown to match expected results on the geometric matching of traditional and multi-body aerofoils, the topology optimisation of structural geometries, and, the minimisation of drag on a standard aerodynamic shape optimisation (ASO) benchmark case. This framework outperformed known analytical optima and shape optimisation results on the minimisation of drag at supersonic speeds under area constraints; which have analytical optima, where it successfully explored topology. Meanwhile flexibility is achieved by using hierarchical design variables both inside the RSVS and through integration with multi-level subdivision optimisation (MLSO). The combination of MLSO and RSVS enables very efficient exploration of complex design spaces, revealing the intricate interactions between geometric and flow topology in supersonic benchmarks. Beyond strict minimisation, this method revealed discontinuous flow behaviours and degenerate multi-modality in the design space. By discovering the properties of the search region, the integrated RSVS-MLSO method shows the potential of flexible automatic design methods to enhance a designers understanding of the physical design space.

Abstract

This paper describes a search for beyond the Standard Model decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles subsequently decaying into b-quark pairs, H → aa → (bb¯)(bb¯), using protonproton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV. This search focuses on the range 15 GeV ≤ ma ≤ 30 GeV, where the decay products are collimated; it is complementary to a previous search in the same final state targeting the range 20 GeV ≤ ma ≤ 60 GeV, where the decay products are well separated. A novel strategy for the identification of the a → bb¯ decays is deployed to enhance the efficiency for topologies with small separation angles. The search is performed with 36 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected in 2015 and 2016 and sets upper limits on the production cross section of H → aa → (bb¯)(bb¯), where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a Z boson.

Abstract

This study examines the performance of mat foundations in 13 blocks of eight-story concrete-walled residential buildings. Topographic monitoring bolts were used to monitor the slab’s construction, which was 0.35 m thick and comprised an area of 225 m2. Using the collected data, a retro-analysis of the modulus of elasticity was conducted to obtain the geotechnical parameters for forecasting the settlement using the elasticity theory. A nonlinear approach for construction modeling and soil–structure interactions showed that the earthworks at the start of construction had a significant role in settling. Blocks in landfills settled faster than those in land-cut zones. The partial execution of building levels was found to be critical in terms of angular distortions and stresses in the concrete slab. The partial lifting of the foundation plate was confirmed in blocks with partial building floor execution, demonstrating the importance of assessing the foundation’s behavior at this stage. The modulus of elasticity dropped as construction progressed, with landfill parts being particularly vulnerable. Creep settlements contributed significantly, accounting for about 20% of the total settlements in some blocks. The numerical staged construction model accurately replicated the behaviors observed in the monitoring data, confirming the hypothesis of the partial raising of the foundation during the building process, which resulted in higher angular distortions. Based on the results obtained, the authors strongly recommend that the simultaneous consideration of soil–structure interactions and construction effects be commonly used in foundation designs.

Abstract

Abstract Results of a search for new particles decaying into eight or more jets and moderate missing transverse momentum are presented. The analysis uses 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider between 2015 and 2018. The selection rejects events containing isolated electrons or muons, and makes requirements according to the number of b-tagged jets and the scalar sum of masses of large-radius jets. The search extends previous analyses both in using a larger dataset and by employing improved jet and missing transverse momentum reconstruction methods which more cleanly separate signal from background processes. No evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model is found. The results are interpreted in the context of supersymmetry-inspired simplified models, significantly extending the limits on the gluino mass in those models. In particular, limits on the gluino mass are set at 2 TeV when the lightest neutralino is nearly massless in a model assuming a two-step cascade decay via the lightest chargino and second-lightest neutralino.

Abstract

A search for a chargino-neutralino pair decaying via the 125 GeV Higgs boson into photons is presented. The study is based on the data collected between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant excess over the expected background is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level for a massless χ˜10 are set on several electroweakino production cross-sections and the visible cross-section for beyond the Standard Model processes. In the context of simplified supersymmetric models, 95% confidence-level limits of up to 310 GeV in m(χ˜1±/χ˜20), where m(χ˜10) = 0.5 GeV, are set. Limits at 95% confidence level are also set on the χ˜1±χ˜20 cross-section in the mass plane of m(χ˜1±/χ˜20) and m(χ˜10), and on scenarios with gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle. Upper limits at the 95% confidence-level are set on the higgsino production cross-section. Higgsino masses below 380 GeV are excluded for the case of the higgsino fully decaying into a Higgs boson and a gravitino. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Abstract

The ATLAS collaboration E-mail: atlas.publications@cern.ch Erratum to: JHEP02(2020)042 ArXiv ePrint: 1911.00453 Figure 5b of the paper [1] contained a misinterpretation in the comparison between the reported new ATLAS measurement of the process pp ! Xp and previously published CMS data [2]. The ATLAS measurement corresponds to cases where either proton dissociates. In the comparison, the CMS measurement was assumed to be defined similarly, whereas in fact it includes the dissociation of only one of the protons. On further investigation, the comparison between the ATLAS and CMS measurements is far from straightforward. The double dissociation (pp → XY ) contribution in the CMS data is not well constrained and indications from the CMS analysis suggest it may be significantly larger than was thought originally. Fuerthermore, the potentially sizeable central diffraction (pp → pXp) contribution was subtracted in the ATLAS measurement, but included by CMS. There is also a small effect associated with the different centre of mass energies (7 TeV for CMS and 8 TeV for ATLAS). In view of these complications, the figure has now been withdrawn from the publication [1].

Abstract

A search for a chargino-neutralino pair decaying via the 125 GeV Higgs boson into photons is presented. The study is based on the data collected between 2015 and 2018 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 of pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant excess over the expected background is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level for a massless χ˜10 are set on several electroweakino production cross-sections and the visible cross-section for beyond the Standard Model processes. In the context of simplified supersymmetric models, 95% confidence-level limits of up to 310 GeV in m(χ˜1±/χ˜20), where m(χ˜10) = 0.5 GeV, are set. Limits at 95% confidence level are also set on the χ˜1±χ˜20 cross-section in the mass plane of m(χ˜1±/χ˜20) and m(χ˜10), and on scenarios with gravitino as the lightest supersymmetric particle. Upper limits at the 95% confidence-level are set on the higgsino production cross-section. Higgsino masses below 380 GeV are excluded for the case of the higgsino fully decaying into a Higgs boson and a gravitino. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with one or two b-quarks and decaying to b-quark pairs is presented using 27.8 fb-1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2015 and 2016. No evidence of a signal is found. Upper limits on the heavy neutral Higgs boson production cross section times its branching ratio to bb¯ are set, ranging from 4.0 to 0.6 pb at 95% confidence level over a Higgs boson mass range of 450 to 1400 GeV. Results are interpreted within the two-Higgs-doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model.

Abstract

A measurement of observables sensitive to spin correlations in tt¯ production is presented, using 36.1 fb - 1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Differential cross-sections are measured in events with exactly one electron and one muon with opposite-sign electric charge as a function of the azimuthal opening angle and the absolute difference in pseudorapidity between the electron and muon candidates in the laboratory frame. The azimuthal opening angle is also measured as a function of the invariant mass of the tt¯ system. The measured differential cross-sections are compared to predictions by several NLO Monte Carlo generators and fixed-order calculations. The observed degree of spin correlation is somewhat higher than predicted by the generators used. The data are consistent with the prediction of one of the fixed-order calculations at NLO, but agree less well with higher-order predictions. Using these leptonic observables, a search is performed for pair production of supersymmetric top squarks decaying into Standard Model top quarks and light neutralinos. Top squark masses between 170 and 230 GeV are largely excluded at the 95% confidence level for kinematically allowed values of the neutralino mass.

Abstract

The results of a search for electroweakino pair production pp→χ~1±χ~20 in which the chargino (χ~1±) decays into a W boson and the lightest neutralino (χ~10), while the heavier neutralino (χ~20) decays into the Standard Model 125 GeV Higgs boson and a second χ~10 are presented. The signal selection requires a pair of b-tagged jets consistent with those from a Higgs boson decay, and either an electron or a muon from the W boson decay, together with missing transverse momentum from the corresponding neutrino and the stable neutralinos. The analysis is based on data corresponding to 139 fb - 1 of s=13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. No statistically significant evidence of an excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is found. Limits are set on the direct production of the electroweakinos in simplified models, assuming pure wino cross-sections. Masses of χ~1±/χ~20 up to 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for a massless χ~10.

Abstract

A search for long-lived particles decaying into hadrons and at least one muon is presented. The analysis selects events that pass a muon or missing-transverse-momentum trigger and contain a displaced muon track and a displaced vertex. The analyzed dataset of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV was collected with the ATLAS detector and corresponds to 136 fb-1. The search employs dedicated reconstruction techniques that significantly increase the sensitivity to long-lived particle decays that occur in the ATLAS inner detector. Background estimates for Standard Model processes and instrumental effects are extracted from data. The observed event yields are compatible with those expected from background processes. The results are presented as limits at 95% confidence level on model-independent cross sections for processes beyond the Standard Model, and interpreted as exclusion limits in scenarios with pair production of long-lived top squarks that decay via a small R-parity-violating coupling into a quark and a muon. Top squarks with masses up to 1.7 TeV are excluded for a lifetime of 0.1 ns, and masses below 1.3 TeV are excluded for lifetimes between 0.01 ns and 30 ns.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral Higgs bosons produced in association with one or two b-quarks and decaying to b-quark pairs is presented using 27.8 fb-1 of s=13 TeV proton-proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during 2015 and 2016. No evidence of a signal is found. Upper limits on the heavy neutral Higgs boson production cross section times its branching ratio to bb¯ are set, ranging from 4.0 to 0.6 pb at 95% confidence level over a Higgs boson mass range of 450 to 1400 GeV. Results are interpreted within the two-Higgs-doublet model and the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model.

Abstract

The results of a search for electroweakino pair production pp→χ~1±χ~20 in which the chargino (χ~1±) decays into a W boson and the lightest neutralino (χ~10), while the heavier neutralino (χ~20) decays into the Standard Model 125 GeV Higgs boson and a second χ~10 are presented. The signal selection requires a pair of b-tagged jets consistent with those from a Higgs boson decay, and either an electron or a muon from the W boson decay, together with missing transverse momentum from the corresponding neutrino and the stable neutralinos. The analysis is based on data corresponding to 139 fb - 1 of s=13 TeV pp collisions provided by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded by the ATLAS detector. No statistically significant evidence of an excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is found. Limits are set on the direct production of the electroweakinos in simplified models, assuming pure wino cross-sections. Masses of χ~1±/χ~20 up to 740 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for a massless χ~10.

Abstract

A measurement of observables sensitive to spin correlations in tt¯ production is presented, using 36.1 fb - 1 of pp collision data at s=13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Differential cross-sections are measured in events with exactly one electron and one muon with opposite-sign electric charge as a function of the azimuthal opening angle and the absolute difference in pseudorapidity between the electron and muon candidates in the laboratory frame. The azimuthal opening angle is also measured as a function of the invariant mass of the tt¯ system. The measured differential cross-sections are compared to predictions by several NLO Monte Carlo generators and fixed-order calculations. The observed degree of spin correlation is somewhat higher than predicted by the generators used. The data are consistent with the prediction of one of the fixed-order calculations at NLO, but agree less well with higher-order predictions. Using these leptonic observables, a search is performed for pair production of supersymmetric top squarks decaying into Standard Model top quarks and light neutralinos. Top squark masses between 170 and 230 GeV are largely excluded at the 95% confidence level for kinematically allowed values of the neutralino mass.

Abstract

One correction is noted for the paper. A wrong cross-section was used for the theory prediction in figure 6 due to not taking into account the VHH contamination properly in the rescaling formula for the signal samples.
