Abstract Background Intestinal schistosomiasis was confirmed endemic in Mangochi District, Malawi, in May of 2018 following an unexpected encounter with discreet populations of Biomphalaria spp. freshwater snails during routine malacological surveillance activities. Since then, only limited malacological surveillance of Biomphalaria has been carried out, and so the distribution of Biomphalaria populations in this area is currently unclear. Additionally, sites of active Schistosoma mansoni transmission in this area are also unknown. In the present study, through extensive malacological surveillance, we aimed to formally document the distribution of Biomphalaria in Mangochi District. We also aimed to identify active intestinal schistosomiasis transmission sites in this area through subjecting all collected Biomphalaria to a recently developed S. mansoni-specific molecular xenomonitoring PCR. Methods Three malacological surveys were carried out along the southern shoreline of Lake Malawi, Mangochi District, Malawi, in November 2021, July 2022 and October/November 2022. All collected Biomphalaria were subjected to cercarial shedding analysis to identify active Schistosoma infections. Shed cercariae were then genotyped to species level using a standard multi-locus PCR and Sanger sequencing protocol. Following this, a subset of Biomphalaria from each collection site were also genotyped to species level using a standard PCR and Sanger sequencing protocol. All collected Biomphalaria were then subjected to a recently developed S. mansoni-specific molecular xenomonitoring PCR to identify infected, but non-shedding, Biomphalaria. Results A total of 589 Biomphalaria were collected across all three surveys. One single Biomphalaria (0.17%) specimen was found to be actively shedding Schistosoma cercariae, which were molecularly confirmed as S. mansoni. All genotyped Biomphalaria (n = 42) were molecularly identified as B. pfeifferi. A further 19 Biomphalaria specimens, collected from four different surveillance sites, were found to be infected with S. mansoni through molecular xenomonitoring. Intestinal schistosomiasis transmission was therefore identified at four different foci in Mangochi District. Conclusions Our study highlights the importance of molecular approaches to investigate Biomphalaria populations and monitor Biomphalaria-associated intestinal schistosomiasis transmission in endemic areas. As such, the continued development and use of such approaches, in particular the development and use of molecular xenomonitoring assays that can be carried out in resource-poor schistosomiasis-endemic settings, is encouraged. The revision of ongoing schistosomiasis control programmes in Mangochi District, in line with WHO recommendations, is also encouraged. Graphical abstract

In Malawi, the putative origin of a newly described Schistosoma haematobium-mattheei hybrid human schistosome was assessed upon a seminal molecular parasitological survey of cattle. Using miracidia hatch test (MHT) and carcass inspection at slaughter, mean prevalence of bovine schistosomiasis was 49.1% (95% CI: 43.7–54.6%) and 10.3% (95% CI: 6.0–16.2%) respectively, though significant spatial heterogeneity was noted. Approximately 2.0% of infected cattle, and only those from Mangochi District, shed S. haematobium-mattheei and/or S. haematobium in faeces. To quantify schistosome (re)infection dynamics, where a S. haematobium-mattheei hybrid was present, we undertook a novel pilot GPS-datalogging sub-study within a specific herd of cattle (n = 8) on the Lake Malawi shoreline, alongside a praziquantel (40 mg/kg) treatment efficacy spot check. At sub-study baseline, all GPS-tagged cattle had proven daily water contact with the lake. Each animal was patently infected upon MHT, with older animals shedding less miracidia. At one month review, whilst parasitological cure was 100.0%, from six weeks onwards, (re)infection was first noted in the youngest animal. By three-month review, all animals were patently (re)infected though only miracidia of S. mattheei were recovered, albeit in much lower numbers. To conclude, infection with S. mattheei is particularly common in cattle and demonstrates a previously cryptic burden of bovine schistosomiasis. Within Mangochi District, bovine transmission of both S. haematobium-mattheei hybrids and S. haematobium are now incriminated, with unequivocal evidence of contemporary zoonotic spill-over. Future control of urogenital schistosomiasis here in the southern region needs to develop, then successfully integrate, a One Health approach with appropriate mitigating strategies to reduce and/or contain bovine schistosomiasis transmission.

To shed first light on caprine schistosomiasis and its zoonotic potential in Malawi, we conducted a molecular epidemiological investigation, sampling goats (n = 230) across three districts, using faecal miracidia hatching test. Molecular genotyping of miracidia later revealed the prevalence of Schistosoma mattheei to be 0.0 % in Nsanje District (n = 30), 16.7 % in Chikwawa District (n = 30) and 25.3 % in Mangochi District (n = 170). Notably, a miracidium of Schistosoma haematobium was observed from a single goat in Chikwawa. Inspection of carcasses (n = 51) at two local abattoirs in Mangochi District did not find any evidence of caprine schistosomiasis where only a single herd, at Mangochi 3, was infected. Here, despite sampling several other herds nearby, the prevalence was 87.7 % (n = 49), with an animal found excreting 1000 miracidia per 5 g of faeces. At this location, our praziquantel treatment (n = 14) and GPS animal tracking (n = 2) pilot sub-study compared two local goat herds over a three-month period. The daily foraging ranges across a 10 km2 area were recorded, alongside targeted schistosome surveillance within local freshwater intermediate snail hosts. Analysis of GPS data revealed only one herd (infected) to have regular daily water contact with Lake Malawi whereas the other herd (not infected) totally avoided the lake. One week after praziquantel treatment administered at 40 mg/kg, anthelminthic cure rate was 92.3 % while at three months approximately a third of treated animals were shedding schistosome miracidia. Cercariae from several field-caught snails locally were genotyped, inclusive of finding a Schistosoma haematobium-mattheei hybrid. Our findings reveal the focalized nature of caprine schistosomiasis, signposting a novel alert for S. haematobium transmission, and highlight where zoonotic transmission can be intense. To better address zoonotic spill-over from S. mattheei (and/or S. haematobium), the national control programme for schistosomiasis should formally develop targeted surveillance of caprine schistosomiasis and where appropriate, attempt an integrated One Health intervention in future.

Abstract Background The giant roundworm Ascaris is an intestinal nematode, causing ascariasis by infecting humans and pigs worldwide. Recent estimates suggest that Ascaris infects over half a billion people, with chronic infections leading to reduced growth and cognitive ability. Ascariasis affects innumerable pigs worldwide and is known to reduce production yields via decreased growth and condemnation of livers. The predominant anthelminthic drugs used to treat ascariasis are the benzimidazoles. Benzimidazoles interact with β-tubulins and block their function, and several benzimidazole resistance-associated mutations have been described in the β-tubulins of ruminant nematodes. Recent research on ascarids has shown that these canonical benzimidazole resistance-associated mutations are likely not present in the β-tubulins of Ascaris, Ascaridia or Parascaris, even in phenotypically resistant populations. Methods To further determine the putative absence of key β-tubulin polymorphisms, we screened two β-tubulin isotypes of Ascaris, highly expressed in adult worms. Using adult and egg samples of Ascaris obtained from pigs and humans worldwide, we performed deep amplicon sequencing to look for canonical resistance-associated mutations in Ascaris β-tubulins. Subsequently, we examined these data in closer detail to study the population dynamics of Ascaris and genetic diversity within the two isotypes and tested whether genotypes appeared to partition across human and pig hosts. Results In the 187 isolates, 69 genotypes were found, made up of eight haplotypes of β-tubulin isotype A and 20 haplotypes of isotype B. Single nucleotide polymorphisms were seen at 14 and 37 positions for β-tubulin isotype A and isotype B, respectively. No evidence of any canonical benzimidazole resistance-associated mutations was found in either human- or pig-derived Ascaris isolates. BackgroundThe phenomenon of hybridisation between Schistosoma species has gained a greater degree of significance since the WHO declared that schistosomiasis is to be eliminated, as a public health problem, by 2030. The role hybridisation plays in the transmission of disease is poorly understood and has the potential to complicate this elimination effort. A primary reason for this incomplete understanding of schistosome hybridisation is the lack of suitable, high-throughput and easily accessible methods capable of identifying the species-parentage of individual schistosomes. To address this resource gap, we present the development of a two-tube HRM assay capable of differentiating the species-parentage of schistosomes from a possible range of six species, namely: S. mattheei, S. curassoni, S. bovis, S. haematobium, S. mansoni and S. margrebowiei.MethodsThe assay was designed using aligned reference sequences for the six target species, with primers designed to amplify PCR products with species-specific melt temperatures for both the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes. The sensitivity and specificity of these novel primer sets were tested against a DNA library comprising representatives of: S. mattheei, S. curassoni, S. bovis, S. haematobium, S. mansoni and S. margrebowiei. The optimal annealing temperature for the real-time PCR (rtPCR) assays was established alongside the efficiency for the different primer pairs. The novel HRM assay was trialled against field samples comprising pooled urine from school-age children collected from 13 schools and miracidial samples preserved on FTA cards. Throughout the optimisation and testing of the novel HRM rtPCR primers targeting nDNA and mtDNA markers comparison against a pre-published S. mansoni and S. haematobium probe-based rtPCR was carried out.ResultsThe assay has a comparable sensitivity to current, probe-based species-specific assays and can detect target DNA at concentrations of 1pg/µL-0.1pg/µL for all six species, with the exception for S. bovis which has a slightly lower sensitivity range of 0.1ng/µL-0.1pg/µL. The analysis of the field samples resulted in all pooled urine samples testing positive for S. haematobium and a further three positive for S. mansoni using the probe-based rtPCR. The HRM rtPCR identified four S. mansoni positive samples in addition to six samples identified as being positive for S. mattheei. Despite identifying non-S. haematobium markers in the urine filter samples analysis of the miracidial samples stored on the FTA cards only identified pure S. haematobium.ConclusionAlthough no hybrids were detected in this manuscript the novel-two tube assay described, offers the potential to radically increase the number of samples screened for the presence of hybrids in a range of sample types, including biopsy material for FGS screening. This will result in a decrease in cost and time in identifying putative hybrid cases.

Abstract Background Human cercarial dermatitis (HCD) is a clinical disease typically caused by skin-penetrative larvae of avian schistosomes. Its geographical epidemiology is firmly tied with that of infected freshwater intermediate snail hosts. To better understand the current distribution of HCD and its level of nuisance in the UK, we undertook a systematic literature review. Methods Following PRIMSA guidelines, PubMed and Scopus databases were searched with keywords “human cercarial dermatitis” OR “swimmer’s itch” AND “United Kingdom”. Articles about imported cases of HCD, or HCD outside the UK, were not formally included. Results A total of 30 articles were initially identified. A further two were gained by inspection of all citations. After screening, eight publications were analysed where the location, number of cases and putative avian schistosome species incriminated were tabulated. HCD is mainly found in the south of England, though gaps in evidence and reporting remain across the UK. Conclusions Despite its noted recent rise in open water swimmers, published literature on HCD across the UK is sparse; this condition is both overlooked and under-reported. We therefore recommend establishing a national database that raises awareness and encourages self-reporting of this nuisance disease. Graphical Abstract

From 2015 to 2023, we conducted a comprehensive study in the 11,893-hectare hunting area managed by the Marcal-Bitvaközi Hunting Company, characterised by its substantial wild boar population. The research was carried out across various settings, including a free-range wild boar garden during large-scale hunts and free-living areas during individual hunts. We examined 216 wild boars in total, with 173 individuals from free-living areas and 43 from free-range areas. Throughout the sample collection process, we encountered numerous technical challenges that are infrequently detailed in the professional literature, often mentioned only tangentially. This oversight in existing publications neglects the significance of addressing field sampling difficulties, which are crucial for ensuring the precision and accuracy of research. This paper details the equipment requirements, sampling methodologies, and practical solutions to streamline fieldwork. While our primary focus was on endoparasitic infections of the stomach and small intestine, the described methodologies and findings are broadly applicable to research involving all internal organs.

Each year temporary puddles are formed on compacted earth roads as a consequence of heavy rains and subsequent flooding in the large floodplain forests of the Danube River, Hungary, Central Europe, Hungary. After the receding of floodwaters, the muddy puddles persist from spring to mid-fall, where they are densely populated by Galba truncatula snails on an annual basis. These snails are the sole intermediate host of Fascioloides magna liver fluke of deer in the forest. According to field observations, G. truncatula is a very rare species on banks of river branches and lakes within the forest but always appears in large aggregations in these semi-natural potholes. Red deer (Cervus elaphus) leave their droppings in puddles while they wallow in the mud, therefore the snails encounter the miracidia of F. magna frequently. Snails are not able to dig themselves into the tamp soil of roads therefore they are destroyed by the wheels of vehicles which drive down the roads from autumn to the end of winter. Therefore, snails colonize these puddles regularly every spring. Since there is no connection between the distant puddles, it is supposed that deer and wild boars repeatedly introduce the snails into the puddles each year carrying snails with the help of mud, which is stuck on their fur while they wallow. This method of transport is supported by the fact that shell remnants of snails can be found on the bark of rubbing trunks situated nearby wallows. It seems that the sequential creation of wallow sites and the repeated introduction of G. truncatula enhance the likelihood for the trematode to infect both hosts.

A healthy udder is important for economical and hygienic milk production. In this study we determined the teat parameters, measured during milking, in the presence of mastitis and after its recovery. The length of the streak canal, the area of the teat end and the area of the pars papillaris of 52 Holstein–Friesian cows were examined by ultrasound before, immediately after, and two hours after milking. Pars papillaris size before milking was higher in the presence of disease (P = 0.011), but was larger before and two hours after milking (P = 0.047 and P = 0.024) with more severe mastitis. During mastitis and recovery, the dimensions of the streak canal (P=0.056–0.934) and teat end (P=0.156–0.420) did not differ from each other. The obtained results show that during mastitis, coagulated milk dilates the pars papillaris better (P=0.011) than the higher milk production of the cured cow. After more severe mastitis, regeneration of the pars papillaris as well as post-milking regeneration also takes place more slowly. The size and size changes of the streak canal and teat end are not affected by the presence or healing of the udder inflammation.

Ascaris suum and Macracanthorhynchus hirudinaceus cause a large loss of yield in farm animals as well as in free-living and captive wild boar herds, thereby causing economic damage. This study compared A. suum and M. hirudinaceus infections in free-ranging and captive wild boars (Sus scrofa) in Hungary. The authors measured the A. suum and M. hirudinaceus infections of a 248-hectare wild boar garden and an 11,893-hectare free-living wild boar herd in the sample area. In all cases, samples were collected from shot wild boars. In total, 216 wild boars were examined from June 2015 to June 2023 in Hungary. Of the 173 dissected wild boars from the wild, 57 (32.9%) were infected with A. suum, while 30 (69.8%) of the 43 individuals from the captive area were infected. The prevalence of M. hirudinaceus in the free-living area population was 9.25% (16 wild boars), while that of the captive population was 34.89% (15 wild boars). In the case of the examined helminths, the captive herd was 36.9% more infected than the herd living in the open area.

Cercarial dermatitis in humans is a re-emerging zoonotic disease caused by infectious larvae of avian blood flukes within the Schistosomatidae family. Upon water contact, these avian schistosome larvae directly penetrate human skin and cause irritation. Between September 2018 and September 2020, carcasses of 94 mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), two green-winged teals (Anas crecca) along with one ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca) were examined. Birds were collected within 12 regions of Hungary, representative of 9 different counties. Inspecting both morphological characters and molecular data, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA) sequences, Bilharziella polonica and Dendritobilharzia pulverulenta were each identified. Most importantly, Trichobilharzia franki was found for the first time in Hungary and in 5 dispersed counties in conjunction with of 3 counties where other avian schistosomes were found. Of note, these avian blood flukes were predominately encountered in wild mallards (∼50%) and not in birds reared for hunting (∼1%). In total, 245 European ear snails (Radix auricularia), a known intermediate host of Trichobilharzia spp., were collected from an urban pond in Eger, Hungary. Five snails (∼2%) consistently shed numerous furcocercariae of T. franki that were confirmed by molecular methods. Our findings help to pinpoint a contemporary life cycle of this avian schistosome within an urban environment, a location regularly visited by various wild waterfowl and the possible species of avian schistosomes responsible for cercarial dermatitis in Hungary. Taken as a whole, we demonstrate the actual and potential risk zone for cercarial dermatitis, particularly with reference to R. auricularia distributions, within Hungary and across Central Europe.

Abstract Background Adult fleas are haematophagous ectoparasites of warm-blooded vertebrates, particularly mammals. Among them, the cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) and the human flea (Pulex irritans) have high veterinary-medical significance, owing to their cosmopolitan distribution and role in the transmission of important vector-borne pathogens. While the taxonomy of Ct. felis has been investigated on a morphological basis during the past decades, its molecular-phylogenetic analyses have been only recently conducted. This study expands the knowledge on Ct. felis from hitherto less studied geographical regions, and includes representatives from additional flea families, less investigated with molecular approaches. Methods Fleas were collected in four countries of the Mediterranean Basin (Croatia, Italy, Malta and Israel), as well as in Hungary, from domestic and wild carnivores, rodents and humans. The DNA extracts of representative fleas (n = 148), belonging to ten species of eight genera, were used for PCR amplification of part of their cytochrome c oxidase subunits 1, 2 (cox1, cox2) and 18S rRNA genes, followed by sequencing and phylogenetic analyses. Results The majority (65.6%) of Ct. felis felis cox2 sequences showed 99.4–100% similarity to each other (haplogroup A), whereas those from Malta and Israel had 98.1–98.7% sequence similarity (haplogroup B), and a third sequence from Israel (haplotype C) had as low as 96.3% sequence similarity in comparison with a reference sequence from group “A”. Except for the shape of the head, no consistent morphological differences (e.g. in chaetotaxy) were found between haplogroups “A” and “C”. Haplotypes of Ct. canis were genetically more homogenous, with 99.6–100% sequence similarity to each other. However, when P. irritans collected from humans was compared to those from three species of wild carnivores, these only had 96.6% cox2 similarity. The mouse flea, Leptopsylla segnis and the northern rat flea, Nosopsyllus fasciatus were both shown to have haplotypes with low intraspecific cox2 similarities (96.2 and 94.4%, respectively). Taken together, differences between mitochondrial lineages within four flea species exceeded that observed between two Chaetopsylla spp. (which had 97.3% cox2 similarity). The topologies of cox1 and cox2 phylogenetic trees were in line with relevant sequence comparisons. Conversely, 18S rRNA gene analyses only resolved differences above the species level. Conclusions Ctenocephalides felis felis, P. irritans, L. segnis and N. fasciatus were shown to have such a high level of mitochondrial gene heterogeneity, that the uniformity of these flea taxa should be reconsidered. Although the present results are limited (especially in the case of L. segnis and N. fasciatus), there appears to be no geographical or host restriction, which could explain the divergence of these genetic lineages.

Abstract Background Male Genital Schistosomiasis (MGS) remains an often-overlooked chronic sequela of urogenital schistosomiasis in endemic areas of sub-Saharan Africa. As part of a 2-year longitudinal study on Hybridization of UroGenital Schistosomiasis (HUGS) in Malawi, a MGS sub-study was conducted to assess whether hybrid schistosomes were incriminated. Methods During recruitment, demographic, health and socio-economic data were collected through individual questionnaire interviews in Mthawira community from Nsanje District along Shire River and Samama community from Mangochi District along Lake Malawi shoreline. Urine and semen samples were collected and analysed to determine the identity of schistosome infection. Urine filtration and microscopy, direct microscopy of semen and its sediments (after centrifugation) were performed. Thereafter, the sediments were examined by molecular DNA analysis with a novel two-tube real-time PCR assay. The participants were also screened for Human papilloma virus (HPV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Results Twenty-two men were recruited for the sub-study, 8 in Nsanje District and 14 in Mangochi District, with a median age of 22.0 years. By microscopy, ten (45.7%) participants had Schistosoma ova in their urine, 11 (50.0%) in semen while 16 (72.7%) were positive by real-time PCR. One participant had both S. haematobium and S. mattheei ova in his semen, three showed symptoms, and one had a mixed infection of S. mansoni and possible S. haematobium-S. mattheei hybrid. Twelve men had detectable high-risk HPV serotypes 16, 18 and others while six had Trichomonas vaginalis and other STIs. Conclusion Zoonotic and hybrid schistosomes can cause MGS similar to human schistosomes, which can be co-infected with HPV and STIs, thereby posing a new challenge in diagnosis, management and control measures in resource poor settings. Increased awareness of these infections among local communities and primary healthcare workers and improvement of disease management are needed and advocated.

Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) remains an often overlooked chronic complication of urogenital schistosomiasis in adolescent girls and women. Moreover, the role of zoonotic or hybrid schistosome infection(s) is poorly appreciated, but is increasingly becoming an emerging public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa. In Southern Malawi, during the “Hybridization in UroGenital Schistosomiasis (HUGS)” study visit, we describe the case of a 33-year-old woman with suspected FGS who partook in a detailed external assessment with internal cervical examination using a portable colposcope. She provided several biological samples for analysis with traditional and molecular parasitological methods—urine, cervicovaginal lavage (CVL), cervical swabs, and external mass and cervical biopsies—alongside provision of detailed demographic information after a thorough medical history questionnaire and an in-depth interview. These samples were screened for the presence of Schistosoma ova on microscopy and DNA genotyping using a novel real-time PCR assay in parallel to pre-published probe-based PCR assays capable of identifying and discriminating up to six named Schistosoma species. A further molecular screen of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including Trichomonas vaginalis, Chlamydia spp., and human papilloma virus (HPV) was conducted on her genital swab and CVL. Overt FGS was diagnosed on clinical colposcopy alongside inspection of the cervical biopsy by microscopy, real-time PCR, and histopathology. The urine filtration, microscopy and real-time PCR of the CVL and swab were negative. This evidences the typical diagnostic challenge, and cases such as this will pose an unmet need in satisfactory patient management. In addition to Schistosoma haematobium, the presence of the zoonotic species Schistosoma mattheei and concurrent STIs raise questions as to the long-term effectiveness of the current control strategies of the National Control Programme to eliminate schistosomiasis as a public health problem. Improved availability of and regular accessibility to praziquantel treatment for women at risk such as this are urgently needed. Furthermore, targeted health education, increased community awareness, and dovetailing of synergistic activities and strategies with other health stakeholders such as those in sexual and reproductive health, as well as HIV/AIDS programs in the Ministry of Health, are needed here and in neighboring countries.

From the safety inside vehicles, Knowsley Safari offers visitors a close-up encounter with captive olive baboons. As exiting vehicles may be contaminated with baboon stool, a comprehensive coprological inspection was conducted to address public health concerns. Baboon stools were obtained from vehicles, and sleeping areas, inclusive of video analysis of baboon–vehicle interactions. A purposely selected 4-day sampling period enabled comparative inspections of 2662 vehicles, with a total of 669 baboon stools examined (371 from vehicles and 298 from sleeping areas). As informed by our pilot study, front-line diagnostic methods were: QUIK-CHEK rapid diagnostic test (RDT) (Giardia and Cryptosporidium), Kato–Katz coproscopy (Trichuris) and charcoal culture (Strongyloides). Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease (NTD) caused by infection with parasitic trematodes of the genus Schistosoma that can lead to debilitating morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization recommend molecular xenomonitoring of Biomphalaria spp. freshwater snail intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni to identify highly focal intestinal schistosomiasis transmission sites and monitor disease transmission, particularly in low-endemicity areas. A standardised protocol to do this, however, is needed. Here, two previously published primer sets were selected to develop and validate a multiplex molecular xenomonitoring end-point PCR assay capable of detecting S. mansoni infections within individual Biomphalaria spp. missed by cercarial shedding. The assay proved highly sensitive and highly specific in detecting and amplifying S. mansoni DNA and also proved highly sensitive in detecting and amplifying non-S. mansoni trematode DNA. The optimised assay was then used to screen Biomphalaria spp. collected from a S. mansoni-endemic area for infection and successfully detected S. mansoni infections missed by cercarial shedding as well as infections with non-S. mansoni trematodes. The continued development and use of molecular xenomonitoring assays such as this will aid in improving disease control efforts, significantly reducing disease-related morbidities experienced by those in schistosomiasis-endemic areas.

I have engaged in a series of linked pedagogical experiments—one woman’s pedagogic resistance, aligned with many others through making poetry together, by way of digital media literacy—over the duration of the Trump administration. These have been acts of engaged, enraged intellectual citizenship in three parts: 1. an online digital media primer about fakenews, #100hardtruths-#fakenews, produced over the first 100 days of the administration; 2. nine Fake News Poetry Workshops held over the spring semester of 2018, these making use of that online primer and co-facilitated by poets in different locations and communities, and 3. an action plan to further mobilize the primer, poems, and workshops to a scale larger than my own personal pedagogy, still in process. These experiments are first and foremost acts of civic engagement qua pedagogy, art-making, and community-building. They are organized to create and make use of responsive formats, processes, and places to better express our keen knowledge, concern, and curiosity about inter-related phenomena given the current crisis of fake news: self, community, and the world, the fake and real, our own power and that of (social) media.

Scholars, activists, researchers, and artists of a certain age and inclination are burdened with a soon-to-be-obsolete but always-beloved, carefully tended but perhaps recently quieted collection that most likely sits on an office shelf gaining dust: their VHS Archive. Not a personal collection, but a professional one of continuing or even growing value if not usability, this archive has been lovingly built and used, probably over decades, for teaching and research and in support of the movements and issues that have mattered most to the collector. With the help of an Open Education Resources grant from CUNY we built an online teaching resource for a graduate course that would focus on just twelve of these tapes. We hope that the course and its lasting website asks, and will offer some answers about, best practices for reactivating knowledge that might be endangered due to medium obsolescence, and other broader cultural factors of forgetting.
