Evidence is mounting that vertebrate defaunation greatly impacts global biogeochemical cycling. Yet, there is no comprehensive assessment of the potential vertebrate influence over plant decomposition, despite litter decay being one of the largest global carbon fluxes. We therefore conducted a global meta-analysis to evaluate vertebrate effects on litter mass loss and associated element release across terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Here we show that vertebrates affected litter decomposition by various direct and indirect pathways, increasing litter mass loss by 6.7% on average, and up to 34.4% via physical breakdown. This positive vertebrate impact on litter mass loss was consistent across contrasting litter types (woody and non-woody), climatic regions (boreal, temperate and tropical), ecosystem types (aquatic and terrestrial) and vertebrate taxa, but disappeared when evaluating litter nitrogen and phosphorus release. Moreover, we found evidence of interactive effects between vertebrates and non-vertebrate decomposers on litter mass loss, and a larger influence of vertebrates at mid-to-late decomposition stages, contrasting with the invertebrate effect known to be strongest at early decomposition stage. Our synthesis demonstrates a global vertebrate control over litter mass loss, and further stresses the need to account for vertebrates when assessing the impacts of biodiversity loss on biogeochemical cycles.

This work presents a detailed analysis of the performance of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy (XMCD-PEEM) as a tool for vector reconstruction of magnetization. For this, 360° domain wall ring structures which form in a synthetic antiferromagnet are chosen as the model to conduct the quantitative analysis. An assessment is made of how the quality of the results is affected depending on the number of projections that are involved in the reconstruction process, as well as their angular distribution. For this a self-consistent error metric is developed which allows an estimation of the optimum azimuthal rotation angular range and number of projections. This work thus proposes XMCD-PEEM as a powerful tool for vector imaging of complex 3D magnetic structures.

An increasing number of studies focus on organic flow batteries (OFBs) as possible substitutes for the vanadium flow battery (VFB), featuring anthraquinone derivatives, such as anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonic acid (2,7-AQDS). VFBs have been postulated as a promising energy storage technology. However, the fluctuating cost of vanadium minerals and risky supply chains have hampered their implementation, while OFBs could be prepared from renewable raw materials. A critical component of flow batteries is the electrode material, which can determine the power density and energy efficiency. Yet, and in contrast to VFBs, studies on electrodes tailored for OFBs are scarce. Hence, in this work, we propose the modification of commercial carbon felts with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and poly(ethylene glycol) for the 2,7-AQDS redox couple and to preliminarily assess its effects on the efficiency of a 2,7-AQDS/ferrocyanide flow battery. Results are compared to those of a VFB to evaluate if the benefits of the modification are transferable to OFBs. The modification of carbon felts with surface oxygen groups introduced by the presence of rGO enhanced both its hydrophilicity and surface area, favoring the catalytic activity toward VFB and OFB reactions. The results are promising, given the improved behavior of the modified electrodes. Parallels are established between the electrodes of both FB technologies.

Seagrasses, which are marine flowering plants, provide numerous ecological services and goods. Zostera marina is the most widely distributed seagrass in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, tolerant of a wide range of environmental conditions. This study aimed to (i) examine seasonal trends and correlations between key seagrass traits such as biomass production and biochemical composition, and (ii) compare seasonal adaptation of two ecotypes of Z. marina exposed to similar environmental conditions on the west coast of Ireland. During summer, plants accumulated higher levels of energetic compounds and levels of unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) decreased. Conversely, the opposite trend was observed during colder months. These findings indicate a positive seasonal correlation between the production of non-structural carbohydrates and saturated fatty acids (SFAs), suggesting that seagrasses accumulate and utilize both energetic compounds simultaneously during favorable and unfavorable environmental conditions. The two ecotypes displayed differential seasonal responses by adjusting plant morphology and production, the utilization of energetic reserves, and modulating unsaturation levels of fatty acids in seagrass leaves. These results underscore the correlated seasonal responses of key compounds, capturing ecotype-specific environmental adaptations and ecological strategies, emphasizing the robust utility of these traits as a valuable eco-physiological tool

Up until the 10th/16th century, the Islamic West—including North Africa west of Egypt, Sicily and al-Andalus—saw the rise and fall of the Fatimid, the Cordoban Umayyad, and the Almohad caliphates, together with the short-lived Ḥammūdid caliphate. There were also a number of Ibāḍī imām-s who ideally had to combine piety and learning, with some of them writing theological and legal tracts. The Fatimids were Shiʿi-Ismāʿīlīs and the Cordoban Umayyads were Sunnis, while the Almohads, followers of a Mahdī without adhering to Shiʿism, formed a category of their own. Possessing knowledge counted as one of the requirements for claiming to be Prince of the Believers (amīr al-muʾminīn), but the place accorded to knowledge in each case was different. Such differences are explored in this chapter. The Cordoban Umayyads wrote poetry; on his part, caliph al-Ḥakam II also wrote notes and corrections in the books he owned. Knowledge was a fundamental ingredient in the Almohad conception of political power. The founder of the Almohad movement, the Mahdī Ibn Tūmart (d. 524/1130), authored a book that includes his profession of faith (ʿaqīda), which those living in Almohad territory had to learn by heart. The second Almohad caliph compiled a collection of traditions regarding jihad that was appended to Ibn Tūmart’s Kitāb. Also, the Almohad caliphs exercised a kind of theoretical authorship over the books written by their scholarly elites, the ṭalaba. In this they were close to the Fatimid imām-caliphs: those in the North African phase, apart from authoring works on the imamate and law, relied on Qāḍī al-Nuʿmān (d. 363/974) for the literary production they needed, but the works he wrote were the result of an inspiration whose source was the imām-caliph as the repository of all learning.

Among the dynasties ruling in the Islamic West, the Idrisids, the Aghlabids, the Fatimids, the Zirids and the Andalusi Taifa kings wrote poetry, but not the Ibāḍī rulers from North Africa. In the Ibāḍī and Ṣufrī polities that were established in Berber-speaking contexts court poetry in Arabic seems to have been absent, while religious piety and learning were extolled. In other contexts, the ability to write poetry signalled a ruler’s distinction, acumen and knowledge. Such ability seems to have been taken for granted in the case of the Cordoban Umayyad emirs and later among the Taifa kings, except for those who were Ṣaqāliba (slaves of European origin). The Arab Taifa king of Seville al-Muʿtamid (r. 461–484/1068–1091) was a highly talented poet whose verses are still appreciated and studied today. The existence of Andalusi rulers who wrote poetry was one of the elements that certain Andalusi authors emphasized in order to prove the cultural superiority of ‘Arab’ al-Andalus over North African ‘Berberdom’, although some members of both the Almoravid and Almohad dynasties are mentioned as having written poetry in Arabic. Rulers in the Islamic West also wrote prose works dealing with the art of government, the loss of power, adab, geometry, bookbinding and astronomy, a variety of topics that is to be understood in each specific context as explained in the second section of this chapter. Finally, the case of authors who became rulers is analyzed: the poet Ibn ʿAmmār, the ʿAzafids of Ceuta, the mystics Ibn Qasī (d. 546/1151) and Ibn Aḥlā al-Anṣārī (d. 645/1247), and the Mahdī Ibn Tūmart (d. 524/1130).

Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) PROTEIN ARGININE METHYLTRANSFERASE5 (PRMT5) post-translationally modifies RNA-binding proteins by arginine (R) methylation. However, the impact of this modification on the regulation of RNA processing is largely unknown. We used the spliceosome component, SM-LIKE PROTEIN 4 (LSM4), as a paradigm to study the role of R-methylation in RNA processing. We found that LSM4 regulates alternative splicing (AS) of a suite of its in vivo targets identified here. The lsm4 and prmt5 mutants show a considerable overlap of genes with altered AS raising the possibility that splicing of those genes could be regulated by PRMT5-dependent LSM4 methylation. Indeed, LSM4 methylation impacts AS, particularly of genes linked with stress response. Wild-type LSM4 and an unmethylable version complement the lsm4-1 mutant, suggesting that methylation is not critical for growth in normal environments. However, LSM4 methylation increases with abscisic acid and is necessary for plants to grow under abiotic stress. Conversely, bacterial infection reduces LSM4 methylation, and plants that express unmethylable-LSM4 are more resistant to Pseudomonas than those expressing wild-type LSM4. This tolerance correlates with decreased intron retention of immune-response genes upon infection. Taken together, this provides direct evidence that R-methylation adjusts LSM4 function on pre-mRNA splicing in an antagonistic manner in response to biotic and abiotic stress. © The Author(s) 2024.

Pentafluorophenyl (PFP) stationary phase is one of the most important phases after the C18 phase in terms of its applications. Three embedded polar groups (EPG)-containing stationary phases were newly synthesized to act the EPGs as additional interaction sites. The silica surface was initially modified with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APS). The APS-modified silicas were coupled with 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoic acid, 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorophenylacetic acid, and 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluoro-anilino(oxo)acetic acid to obtain Sil-PFP-BA, Sil-PFP-AA, and Sil-PFP-AN phases, respectively. The new phases were characterized by elemental analysis, ATR-FTIR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The phases were evaluated with the Tanaka and Neue tests in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC). In addition, they were characterized as hydrophilic phases by the Tanaka test protocol used in hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) separation mode. The Sil-PFP-AA phase showed the highest molecular shape selectivity in RPLC, while Sil-PFP-AN achieved the highest separability in HILIC compared to the commercial PFP reference column. The Sil-PFP-AA phase was successfully applied for the analysis of capsaicinoids from real samples of fresh chili peppers (Capsicum spp.) in RPLC and the Sil-PFP-AN phase for vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in HILIC.

Three naphthorosarins, antiaromatic expanded porphyrins bearing different meso substituents (NRos 1–3), designed to self-assemble into columnar liquid crystalline (LC) structures, were synthesized and characterized using polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), as well as supporting computational calculations. The substituents were found to play a crucial role in modulating the LC behaviour.

We show that some sets of quantum observables are unique up to an isometry and have a contextuality witness that attains the same value for any initial state. We prove that these two properties make it possible to certify any of these sets by looking at the statistics of experiments with sequential measurements and using any initial state of full rank, including thermal and maximally mixed states. We prove that this “certification with any full-rank state” (CFR) is possible for any quantum system of finite dimension d ≥ 3 and is robust and experimentally useful in dimensions 3 and 4. In addition, we prove that complete Kochen-Specker sets can be Bell self-tested if and only if they enable CFR. This establishes a fundamental connection between these two methods of certification, shows that both methods can be combined in the same experiment, and opens new possibilities for certifying quantum devices.

Poincaré’s conventionalism has been interpreted in many writings as a philosophical position emerged by reflection on certain scientific problems, such as the applicability of geometry to physical space or the status of certain scientific principles. In this paper I would like to consider conventionalism as a philosophical position that emerged from Poincaré’s scientific practice. But not so much from dealing with scientific problems, as from the use of two specific methodologies proper to modern mathematics and the modern natural sciences: methodological structuralism and the hypothetical-deductive method—thus, as a philosophical position which emerged from a way (or rather, two ways) of doing science. With this approach, I try to deepen the analysis of connections between Poincaré’s scientific practice and his philosophy.

Evidence is accumulating for the crucial role of a solid's free electrons in the dynamics of solid-liquid interfaces. Liquids induce electronic polarization and drive electric currents as they flow; electronic excitations, in turn, participate in hydrodynamic friction. Yet, the underlying solid-liquid interactions have been lacking a direct experimental probe. Here we study the energy transfer across liquid-graphene interfaces using ultrafast spectroscopy. The graphene electrons are heated up quasi-instantaneously by a visible excitation pulse, and the time evolution of the electronic temperature is then monitored with a terahertz pulse. We observe that water accelerates the cooling of the graphene electrons, whereas other polar liquids leave the cooling dynamics largely unaffected. A quantum theory of solid-liquid heat transfer accounts for the water-specific cooling enhancement through a resonance between the graphene surface plasmon mode and the so-called hydrons-water charge fluctuations-particularly the water libration modes, which allows for efficient energy transfer. Our results provide direct experimental evidence of a solid-liquid interaction mediated by collective modes and support the theoretically proposed mechanism for quantum friction. They further reveal a particularly large thermal boundary conductance for the water-graphene interface and suggest strategies for enhancing the thermal conductivity in graphene-based nanostructures.

Mycorrhizal symbioses are known to strongly influence plant performance, structure plant communities and shape ecosystem dynamics. Plant mycorrhizal traits, such as those characterising mycorrhizal type (arbuscular (AM), ecto-, ericoid or orchid mycorrhiza) and status (obligately (OM), facultatively (FM) or non-mycorrhizal) offer valuable insight into plant belowground functionality. Here, we compile available plant mycorrhizal trait information and global occurrence data (100 million records) for 11,770 vascular plant species. Using a plant phylogenetic mega-tree and high-resolution climatic and edaphic data layers, we assess phylogenetic and environmental correlates of plant mycorrhizal traits. We find that plant mycorrhizal type is more phylogenetically conserved than plant mycorrhizal status, while environmental variables (both climatic and edaphic; notably soil texture) explain more variation in mycorrhizal status, especially FM. The previously underestimated role of environmental conditions has far-reaching implications for our understanding of ecosystem functioning under changing climatic and soil conditions.

The magnetic properties of transition-metal ions are generally described by the atomic spins of the ions and their exchange coupling. The orbital moment, usually largely quenched due the ligand field, is then seen as a perturbation. In such a scheme, S = 1/2 ions are predicted to be isotropic. We investigate a Co(II) complex with two antiferromagnetically coupled 1/2 spins on Au(111) using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and density functional theory. We find that each of the Co ions has an orbital moment comparable to that of the spin, leading to magnetic anisotropy, with the spins preferentially oriented along the Co–Co axis. The orbital moment and the associated magnetic anisotropy is tuned by varying the electronic coupling of the molecule to the substrate and the microscope tip. These findings show the need to consider the orbital moment even in systems with strong ligand fields. As a consequence, the description of S = 1/2 ions becomes strongly modified, which have important consequences for these prototypical systems for quantum operations.

Introduction: Forest restoration is an effective way to promote ecosystem functions and mitigate climate change. However, how forest restoration affect soil C:N:P stoichiometry and microbial biodiversity, as well as their linkage across contrasting forest types globally remains largely illusive. Materials and Methods: Here we conducted a global meta-analysis by synthesizing 121 published papers with 1649 observations to explore how forest restoration affect soil C:N:P stoichiometry and microbial biodiversity globally. Results: Forest restoration significantly increased soil total carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) content, whereas having no significant impact on most microbial diversity indicator, except for an enhancement in bacterial operational taxonomic unit and fungal Simpson. Meanwhile, forest restoration effects on soil C:N:P stoichiometry varied with different forest types, with promoting more soil C and P in ectomycorrhizal than those in arbuscular mycorrhizal forests. Meanwhile, forest restoration induced changes in soil N and P were positively correlated with microbial Shannon index. More importantly, forest restoration effects on soil C:N:P stoichiometry and microbial biodiversity were regulated by climate factors such as mean annual temperature and mean annual precipitation. Conclusion: Our results highlight the crucial role of forest restoration in decoupling the biogeochemical cycles of C, N and P through changes in microbial biodiversity. Therefore, incorporating the decouple effects of forest restoration on soil C:N:P stoichiometry into Earth system models may improve predictions of climate–forest feedbacks in the Anthropocene. © 2023 The Authors. A set of unique features, including large-area solution processing on flexible and stretchable substrates, make polymer semiconductors a promising material choice for a range of state-of-the-art applications in electronics, optoelectronics and sensing. Yet, an inherent weakness of polymer semiconductors remains their low dielectric constants, increasing their susceptibility toward unscreened dipoles. These dipoles are particularly prevalent at polymer-dielectric interfaces with high-k dielectrics, which are essential for the operation of devices such as low-voltage field-effect transistors. This shortcoming can be addressed by using self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) to passivate surfaces that impact charge transport. However, SAM-treatment also increases the hydrophobicity of surfaces and therefore poses a challenge for subsequent solution processing steps and complex packaging of devices. Here, we report low-voltage polymer transistors processed by spin coating of the polymer semiconductors on highly hydrophobic SAM-treated aluminum and hafnium oxide dielectrics (contact angles >100) through fine-tuning of the interfacial tension at the polymer-dielectric interface. This approach enables the processing and detailed characterization of near-amorphous (indacenodithiophene-cobenzothiadiazole) as well as semicrystalline (poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)diketopyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione-alt-thieno[3,2-b]thiophen)) polymer semiconductors. We demonstrate polymer transistors that exhibit high on-currents and field-independent, charge carrier mobilities of 0.8 cm2 V−1s−1 at low operating voltages (<3 V).

The small arboreal frog Guibemantis liber (Anura: Mantellidae) has served as an example for the existence of deep conspecific lineages that differ by a substantial amount in mitochondrial DNA but are similar in morphology and bioacoustics and thus are assigned to the same nominal species. During fieldwork in northern Madagascar, we identified additional such lineages and surprisingly, observed close syntopy of two of these at various sites. In-depth study based on DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene from 338 specimens of G. liber sensu lato from across its range, sequences of four nuclear-encoded markers for 154‒257 of these specimens, a phylogenomic dataset obtained by the FrogCap target capture approach, and additional mitochondrial genes for representatives of most mitochondrial lineages, as well as bioacoustic and morphological comparisons, revealed concordant differentiation among several lineages of the G. liber complex. We identify nine lineages differing by 5.3‒15.5% in cytochrome b and 2.4‒10.1% in the 16S rRNA gene, and find that several of these lack or have only limited allele sharing in the nuclear-encoded genes. Based on sympatric or parapatric occurrence without genetic admixture, combined with differences in bioacoustic and morphological characters, we scientifically name three lineages from northern Madagascar as new species: G. razoky sp. nov., G. razandry sp. nov., and G. fotsitenda sp. nov. Of these new species, G. razoky sp. nov. and G. razandry sp. nov. show widespread syntopy across northern Madagascar and differ in body size and advertisement calls. Guibemantis fotsitenda sp. nov. is sister to G. razandry sp. nov., but appears to occur at lower elevations, including in close geographic proximity on the Marojejy Massif. The transmission of microbes from mother to offspring is an ancient, advantageous, and widespread feature of metazoan life history. Despite this, little is known about the quantitative strategies taken to maintain symbioses across generations. The quantity of maternal microbes that is provided to each offspring through vertical transmission could theoretically be stochastic (no trend), consistent (an optimal range is allocated), or provisioned (a trade-off with fecundity). Examples currently come from animals that release free-living eggs (oviparous) and suggest that offspring are provided a consistent quantity of symbionts. The quantity of maternal microbes that is vertically transmitted in other major reproductive strategies has yet to be assessed. We used the brooding (viviparous) sponge Halichondria panicea to test whether offspring receive quantitatively similar numbers of maternal microbes. We observed that H. panicea has a maternal pool of the obligate symbiont Candidatus Halichondribacter symbioticus and that this maternal pool is provisioned proportionally to reproductive output and allometrically by offspring size. This pattern was not observed for the total bacterial community. Experimental perturbation by antibiotics could not reduce the abundance of Ca. H. symbioticus in larvae, while the total bacterial community could be reduced without affecting the ability of larvae to undergo metamorphosis. A trade-off between offspring size and number is, by definition, maternal provisioning and parallel differences in Ca. H. symbioticus abundance would suggest that this obligate symbiont is also provisioned

The extraordinary diversity of viruses infecting bacteria and archaea is now primarily studied through metagenomics. While metagenomes enable high-throughput exploration of the viral sequence space, metagenome-derived sequences lack key information compared to isolated viruses, in particular host association. Different computational approaches are available to predict the host(s) of uncultivated viruses based on their genome sequences, but thus far individual approaches are limited either in precision or in recall, i.e., for a number of viruses they yield erroneous predictions or no prediction at all. Here, we describe iPHoP, a two-step framework that integrates multiple methods to reliably predict host taxonomy at the genus rank for a broad range of viruses infecting bacteria and archaea, while retaining a low false discovery rate. Based on a large dataset of metagenome-derived virus genomes from the IMG/VR database, we illustrate how iPHoP can provide extensive host prediction and guide further characterization of uncultivated viruses

[Aim] Many species experienced population turnover and local extinction during the Late Pleistocene. In the case of megafauna, it remains challenging to disentangle climate change and the activities of Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers as the main cause. In contrast, the impact of humans on rodent populations is likely to be negligible. This study investigated which climatic and/or environmental factors affect the population dynamics of the common vole. This temperate rodent is widespread across Europe and was one of the most abundant small mammal species throughout the Late Pleistocene., [Location] Europe., [Taxon] Common vole (Microtus arvalis)., [Methods] We generated a dataset comprised of 4.2 kb long fragment of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from 148 ancient and 51 modern specimens sampled from multiple localities across Europe and covering the last 60 thousand years (ka). We used Bayesian inference to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships and to estimate the age of the specimens that were not directly dated., [Results] We estimated the time to the most recent common ancestor of all last glacial and extant common vole lineages to be 90 ka ago and the divergence of the main mtDNA lineages present in extant populations to between 55 and 40 ka ago, which is earlier than most previous estimates. We detected several lineage turnovers in Europe during the period of high climate variability at the end of Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3; 57–29 ka ago) in addition to those found previously around the Pleistocene/Holocene transition. In contrast, data from the Western Carpathians suggest continuity throughout the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) even at high latitudes., [Main Conclusions] The main factor affecting the common vole populations during the last glacial period was the decrease in open habitat during the interstadials, whereas climate deterioration during the LGM had little impact on population dynamics. This suggests that the rapid environmental change rather than other factors was the major force shaping the histories of the Late Pleistocene faunas.

The decomposition of litter and the supply of nutrients into and from the soil are two fundamental processes through which the above- and belowground world interact. Microbial biodiversity, and especially that of decomposers, plays a key role in these processes by helping litter decomposition. Yet the relative contribution of litter diversity and soil biodiversity in supporting multiple ecosystem services remains virtually unknown. Here we conducted a mesocosm experiment where leaf litter and soil biodiversity were manipulated to investigate their influence on plant productivity, litter decomposition, soil respiration, and enzymatic activity in the littersphere. We showed that both leaf litter diversity and soil microbial diversity (richness and community composition) independently contributed to explain multiple ecosystem functions. Fungal saprobes community composition was especially important for supporting ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF), plant production, litter decomposition, and activity of soil phosphatase when compared with bacteria or other fungal functional groups and litter species richness. Moreover, leaf litter diversity and soil microbial diversity exerted previously undescribed and significantly interactive effects on EMF and multiple individual ecosystem functions, such as litter decomposition and plant production. Together, our work provides experimental evidence supporting the independent and interactive roles of litter and belowground soil biodiversity to maintain ecosystem functions and multiple services.

Despite host-fungal symbiotic interactions being ubiquitous in all ecosystems, understanding how symbiosis has shaped the ecology and evolution of fungal spores that are involved in dispersal and colonization of their hosts has been ignored in life-history studies. We assembled a spore morphology database covering over 26,000 species of free-living to symbiotic fungi of plants, insects and humans and found more than eight orders of variation in spore size. Evolutionary transitions in symbiotic status correlated with shifts in spore size, but the strength of this effect varied widely among phyla. Symbiotic status explained more variation than climatic variables in the current distribution of spore sizes of plant-associated fungi at a global scale while the dispersal potential of their spores is more restricted compared to free-living fungi. Our work advances life-history theory by highlighting how the interaction between symbiosis and offspring morphology shapes the reproductive and dispersal strategies among living forms.

Hydroxylamine, NH2OH, is one of the already detected interstellar molecules with the highest prebiotic potential. Yet, the abundance of this molecule found by astronomical observations is rather low for a relatively simple molecule, ∼10-10 relative to H2. This seemingly low abundance can be rationalized by destruction routes operating on interstellar dust grains. In this work, we tested the viability of this hypothesis under several prisms, finding that the origin of a lower abundance of NH2OH can be explained by two chemical processes, one operating at low temperature (10 K) and the other at intermediate temperature (20 K). At low temperatures, enabling the hydrogen abstraction reaction HNO + H → NO + H2, even in small amounts, partially inhibits the formation of NH2OH through successive hydrogenation of NO, and reduces its abundance on the grains. We found that enabling a 15-30 per cent of binding sites for this reaction results in reductions of NH2OH abundance of approximately one to two orders of magnitude. At warmer temperatures (20 K, in our study), the reaction NH2OH + H → HNOH + H2, which was found to be fast (k ∼106 s-1) in this work, followed by further abstractions by adsorbates that are immobile at 10 K (O, N) are the main route of NH2OH destruction. Our results shed light on the abundance of hydroxylamine in space and pave the way to constraining the subsequent chemistry experienced by this molecule and its derivatives in the interstellar prebiotic chemistry canvas.

We use the two-flavor Linear Sigma Model with quarks to study the phase structure of isospin asymmetric matter at zero temperature. The meson degrees of freedom provide the mean field chiral and isospin condensates on top of which we compute the effective potential accounting for constituent quark fluctuations at one-loop order. Using the renormalizability of the model, we absorb the ultraviolet divergences into suitable counterterms that are added respecting the original structure of the theory. These counterterms are determined from the stability conditions which require the effective potential to have minima in the condensates directions at the classical values, as well as the transition from the noncondensed to the condensed phase to be smooth as a function of the isospin chemical potential. We use the model to study the evolution of the condensates as well as the pressure, energy and isospin densities and the sound velocity as functions of the isospin chemical potential. The approach does a good average description up to isospin chemical potentials values not too large as compared to the vacuum pion mass.

The magnetization patterns on three atomic layers thick islands of Co on Ru(0001) are studied by spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM). In-plane magnetized micrometer wide triangular Co islands are grown on Ru(0001). They present two different orientations correlated with two different stacking sequences which differ only in the last layer position. The stacking sequence determines the type of magnetization pattern observed: the hcp islands present very wide domain walls, while the fcc islands present domains separated by much narrower domain walls. The former is an extremely low in-plane anisotropy system. We estimate the in-plane magnetic anisotropy of the fcc regions to be 1.96 × 104 J m-3 and of the hcp ones to be 2.5 × 102 J m-3.

Computational investigation of the structural and photophysical properties of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials can help to establish understanding-driven material optimization strategies. However, the plethora of structural motifs found in synthesized PCNs complicates atomistic simulations. Performing hybrid DFT studies, we systematically investigate formation energy trends and optical properties of PCNs as a function of dimensionality. Thermochemical calculations predict that a mixture of structural motifs including the melon string structure, poly(heptazine imide), and g-C3N4 motifs is stable under typical synthetic conditions. Lateral condensation reduces the bandgap while out-of-plane corrugation increases both stability and the bandgap. The key result of this work is that already small domains of strongly condensed PCN embedded in a less condensed framework can give rise to desirable optical properties. This result reconciles conflicting literature reports indicating that the calculated bandgap of the thermodynamically favorable melon structure is too large compared to experiments, while the g-C3N4 structure, for which bandgap calculations are in better agreement with experiments, does not agree with the measured chemical composition of synthesized PCNs. Finally, we postulate a new computational model for PCNs which combines the most important structural motifs and for which we calculate a bandgap of ca. 2.9 eV.

A universal taxonomy of viruses is essential for a comprehensive view of the virus world and for communicating the complicated evolutionary relationships among viruses. However, there are major differences in the conceptualisation and approaches to virus classification and nomenclature among virologists, clinicians, agronomists, and other interested parties. Here, we provide recommendations to guide the construction of a coherent and comprehensive virus taxonomy, based on expert scientific consensus. Firstly, assignments of viruses should be congruent with the best attainable reconstruction of their evolutionary histories, i.e., taxa should be monophyletic. This fundamental principle for classification of viruses is currently included in the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) code only for the rank of species. Secondly, phenotypic and ecological properties of viruses may inform, but not override, evolutionary relatedness in the placement of ranks. Thirdly, alternative classifications that consider phenotypic attributes, such as being vector-borne (e.g., "arboviruses"), infecting a certain type of host (e.g., "mycoviruses," "bacteriophages") or displaying specific pathogenicity (e.g., "human immunodeficiency viruses"), may serve important clinical and regulatory purposes but often create polyphyletic categories that do not reflect evolutionary relationships. Nevertheless, such classifications ought to be maintained if they serve the needs of specific communities or play a practical clinical or regulatory role. However, they should not be considered or called taxonomies. Finally, while an evolution-based framework enables viruses discovered by metagenomics to be incorporated into the ICTV taxonomy, there are essential requirements for quality control of the sequence data used for these assignments. Syneruptive magma mixing is widespread in volcanic eruptions, affecting explosivity and composition of products, but its evidence in basaltic systems is usually cryptic. Here we report direct evidence of mixing between basanitic and tephritic magmas in the first days of the 2021 Tajogaite eruption of Cumbre Vieja, La Palma. Groundmass glass in tephritic tephra from the fifth day of the eruption is locally inhomogeneous, showing micron-scale filamentary structures of Si-poor and Fe-, Mg-rich melt, forming complex filaments attached to bubbles. Their compositional distribution attests the presence of primitive basanitic magma, with compositions similar to late-erupted melts, interacting with an evolved tephritic melt during the first week of the event. From filament morphology, we suggest their generation by dragging and folding of basanitic melt during bubble migration through melt interfaces. Semi-quantitative diffusion modelling indicates that the filamentary structures are short-lived, dissipating in timescales of tens of seconds. In combination with thermobarometric constraints, we suggest a mixing onset by sub-Moho remobilization of a tephritic reservoir by basanite input, followed by turbulent ascent of a mingled magma. In the shallow conduit or lava fountain, bubble nucleation and migration triggered further mingling of the distinct melt-phases. This phenomenon might have enhanced the explosive behaviour of the eruption in such period, where violent strombolian explosions were common.

A recurring feature of oceanic archipelagos is the presence of adaptive radiations that generate endemic, species-rich clades that can offer outstanding insight into the links between ecology and evolution. Recent developments in evolutionary genomics have contributed towards solving long-standing questions at this interface. Using a comprehensive literature search, we identify studies spanning 19 oceanic archipelagos and 110 putative adaptive radiations, but find that most of these radiations have not yet been investigated from an evolutionary genomics perspective. Our review reveals different gaps in knowledge related to the lack of implementation of genomic approaches, as well as undersampled taxonomic and geographic areas. Filling those gaps with the required data will help to deepen our understanding of adaptation, speciation, and other evolutionary processes.

Soil contamination is one of the main threats to ecosystem health and sustainability. Yet little is known about the extent to which soil contaminants differ between urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems. Here we show that urban greenspaces and adjacent natural areas (i.e., natural/semi-natural ecosystems) shared similar levels of multiple soil contaminants (metal(loid)s, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes) across the globe. We reveal that human influence explained many forms of soil contamination worldwide. Socio-economic factors were integral to explaining the occurrence of soil contaminants worldwide. We further show that increased levels of multiple soil contaminants were linked with changes in microbial traits including genes associated with environmental stress resistance, nutrient cycling, and pathogenesis. Taken together, our work demonstrates that human-driven soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces globally, and highlights that soil contaminants have the potential to cause dire consequences for ecosystem sustainability and human wellbeing.

Increasing the number of environmental stressors could decrease ecosystem functioning in soils. Yet this relationship has not been globally assessed outside laboratory experiments. Here, using two independent global standardized field surveys, and a range of natural and human factors, we test the relationship between the number of environmental stressors exceeding different critical thresholds and the maintenance of multiple ecosystem services across biomes. Our analysis shows that having multiple stressors, from medium levels (>50%), negatively and significantly correlates with impacts on ecosystem services and that having multiple stressors crossing a high-level critical threshold (over 75% of maximum observed levels) reduces soil biodiversity and functioning globally. The number of environmental stressors exceeding the >75% threshold was consistently seen as an important predictor of multiple ecosystem services, therefore improving prediction of ecosystem functioning. Our findings highlight the need to reduce the dimensionality of the human footprint on ecosystems to conserve biodiversity and function.

Soil micronutrients are capital for the delivery of ecosystem functioning and food provision worldwide. Yet, despite their importance, the global biogeography and ecological drivers of soil micronutrients remain virtually unknown, limiting our capacity to anticipate abrupt unexpected changes in soil micronutrients in the face of climate change. Here, we analyzed >1300 topsoil samples to examine the global distribution of six metallic micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Co and Ni) across all continents, climates and vegetation types. We found that warmer arid and tropical ecosystems, present in the least developed countries, sustain the lowest contents of multiple soil micronutrients. We further provide evidence that temperature increases may potentially result in abrupt and simultaneous reductions in the content of multiple soil micronutrients when a temperature threshold of 12–14°C is crossed, which may be occurring on 3% of the planet over the next century. Altogether, our findings provide fundamental understanding of the global distribution of soil micronutrients, with direct implications for the maintenance of ecosystem functioning, rangeland management and food production in the warmest and poorest regions of the planet.

Palaeoclimate legacies have been reported to influence microbial communities and carbon (C) stocks even after thousands of years. However, the direct and indirect influences of climate legacies on microbial C processes remain poorly understood and thus limit our capacity to predict how climate legacies regulate C cycling. Here, we conducted microbial, soil and vegetation surveys along a continental latitudinal transect of 4200 km covering a wide range of forest biomes. With these data, we evaluated the potential capacity of climate legacies to predict direct and indirect variations in microbial metabolic quotient (MMQ) across and within three main forest biomes: tropical, subtropical and temperate

Twelve (N^N^N)platinum pyridyl complexes, (N^N^N)Pt(pyF), were synthesised and investigated for their singlet oxygen generation and potential biological activities. They exhibited 1IL and 1MLCT absorption transitions at approximately 325 and 360 nm, identified through TD-DFT calculations. Luminescence was observed only in the L1-derived compounds in solution, with a dual emission with the main contribution of phosphorescence under deaerated conditions. Room temperature phosphorescence was detected in all solid-state cases. Electron-withdrawing substituents at specific positions (R1 and X) and the number of fluorine atoms in R2 were found to enhance the photosensitizing capabilities of these compounds. Biological assessments, including cytotoxicity and photocytotoxicity, were conducted to evaluate their potential as chemotherapeutic agents and photosensitizers. Complexes with chloro substitution in the N^N^N tridentate ligand of the central pyridine ring exhibited promising chemotherapeutic properties. Ancillary pyridine ring substitution became significant under irradiation conditions, with fluoromethylated substituents enhancing cytotoxicity. Complex 2-CF3 was the most efficient singlet oxygen producer and a highly effective photosensitizer. CHF2-substituted complexes also showed improved photosensitizing activity. DNA binding studies indicated moderate interactions with DNA, offering insights into potential biological applications.

Lightning flashes are an important source of wildfires worldwide, contributing to the emission of trace gases to the atmosphere. Based on experiments and field observations, continuing currents in lightning have since a long time been proposed to play a significant role in the ignition of wildfires. However, simultaneous detections of optical and radio signals from fire-igniting lightning confirming the role of continuing currents in igniting wildfires are rare. In this work, we first analyze the optical signal of the lightning-ignited wildfires reported by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper over the Contiguous United States (CONUS) during the summer of 2018, and we then analyze the optical and the Extremely Low Frequency signal of a confirmed fire-igniting lightning flash in the Swiss Alps. Despite data uncertainties, we found that the probability of ignition of a lightning flash with Continuing Current (CC) lasting more than 10 ms is higher than that of cloud-to-ground lightning in CONUS. Finally, we confirm the existence of a long CC (lasting about 400 ms) associated with a long-lasting optical signal (lasting between 2 and 4 s) of a video-recorded fire-igniting lightning flash.© 2023. Lightning is the main precursor of natural wildfires and Long-Continuing-Current (LCC) lightning flashes are proposed to be the main igniters of lightning-ignited wildfires (LIW). Previous studies predict a change of the global occurrence rate and spatial pattern of total lightning. Nevertheless, the sensitivity of lightning-ignited wildfire occurrence to climate change is uncertain. Here, we investigate space-based measurements of LCC lightning associated with lightning ignitions and present LCC lightning projections under the Representative Concentration Pathway RCP6.0 for the 2090s by applying a recent LCC lightning parameterization based on the updraft strength in thunderstorms. We find a 41% global increase of the LCC lightning flash rate. Increases are largest in South America, the western coast of North America, Central America, Australia, Southern and Eastern Asia, and Europe, while only regional variations are found in northern polar forests, where fire risk can affect permafrost soil carbon release. These results show that lightning schemes including LCC lightning are needed to project the occurrence of lightning-ignited wildfires under climate change.© 2023, The Author(s).

In this study a modus operandi to investigate site-specific nanostructures in thin films (lamellae) excavated “in-plane” across (sub)grain boundaries is presented. This is done by discussing the case of a magnetite grain hosted in a thin section of banded iron formation (Norway) that is prepared parallel to the kinematic reference frame (XZ section of the strain ellipsoid). SEM-EBSD analysis reveal that the magnetite grains do not develop a strong crystallographic preferred orientation, although individual grains are strained and show evidence of intracrystalline deformation in form of low angle grain boundaries (LAGB's). Two “in-plane” lamellae using focused ion beam (FIB) technique are excavated from a magnetite grain in the kinematic reference frame, and nanostructures are studied along three LAGB's using high resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging followed by Fourier transformation (FT), inverse FT and estimation of dislocation densities. Our data establish an empirical relationship for the studied LAGBs, namely, the smaller the angle between LAGB and X-direction, the larger are the shear strain and dislocation density. This relationship is validated from numerical simulations of viscoplastic deformation and dynamic recrystallisation of polycrystalline aggregates of halite, which is also a cubic mineral analogous to magnetite. In addition to the site-specific “in-plane” FIB lamella information, this study also shows that in a deformed mineral the different orientations of the LAGB compared to the principal strain axes show a different dislocation density. This approach of full tracking of the extension direction (X) from the macroscopic to the nano-scale could play an important role in forward modelling of microstructure evolution in future studies.

Aims. We investigate the outcome of an electrical discharge of naphthalene and search for the resulting products in the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC-1). Methods. Using chirped pulse Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy paired with an electric discharge source, we investigated products resulting from the naphthalene discharge. Quantum chemical calculations were used to help assign species and investigate potential reaction pathways relevant to the interstellar medium. These products were searched for in TMC-1 using the QUIJOTE line survey, covering 31.0-50.3 GHz. Results. We confirm the detection of ethynylbenzene in TMC-1, and we also present a new molecular species, 1,2-diethynylbenzene, which could play an important role in the formation of naphthalene. Over ten products have been identified as resulting from the discharge, with only one of these species found in a previous IR-UV discharge study of naphthalene. Conclusions. Ethynylbenzene has definitively been detected in TMC-1, and while we have identified a potentially important species for the formation of naphthalene and an exothermic reaction pathway, there is no current indication of its presence in TMC-1.

Species living in distinct habitats often experience unique ecological selective pressures, which can drive phenotypic divergence. However, how ecophenotypic patterns are affected by allometric trends and trait integration levels is less well understood. Here we evaluate the role of allometry in shaping body size and body form diversity in Pristurus geckos utilizing differing habitats. We found that patterns of allometry and integration in body form were distinct in species with different habitat preferences, with ground-dwelling Pristurus displaying the most divergent allometric trend and high levels of integration. There was also strong concordance between intraspecific allometry across individuals and evolutionary allometry among species, revealing that differences in body form among individuals were predictive of evolutionary changes across the phylogeny at macroevolutionary scales. This suggested that phenotypic evolution occurred along allometric lines of least resistance, with allometric trajectories imposing a strong influence on the magnitude and direction of size and shape changes across the phylogeny. When viewed in phylomorphospace, the largest rock-dwelling species were most similar to the smallest ground-dwelling species, and vice versa. Thus, in Pristurus, phenotypic evolution along the differing habitat-based allometric trajectories resulted in similar body forms at differing body sizes in distinct ecological habitats.

The rovibrational spectrum of the molecular ion H$_2$CCCH$^+$ was investigated in a 4~K cryogenic ion trap instrument employing the leak-out spectroscopy method. Transitions within the fundamental $\nu_1$ (C-H stretch) and the combination band $\nu_3$+$\nu_5$ (C-C stretches) were detected, the search aided by high level quantum chemical calculations. The analysis of the rovibrational measurements enabled us to predict the rotational structure of the ground state. Using a rotational-vibrational double-resonance scheme, 14 pure rotational transitions were measured. This, in turn, led to the radio astronomical detection of H$_2$CCCH$^+$ in the interstellar medium, as recently reported (Silva et al., Astron. Astrophys. 676, L1, 2023).

Ultrafast carrier dynamics are uniquely sensitive to the correlated interactions within quantum materials as well as their transition to different phases, like the emergence of superconductivity (SC) [1,2].

Disturbed motor control is a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD). Cortico-striatal synapses play a central role in motor learning and adaption, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) from cortico-striatal afferents modulates their plasticity via TrkB in striatal medium spiny projection neurons (SPNs). We studied the role of dopamine in modulating the sensitivity of direct pathway SPNs (dSPNs) to BDNF in cultures of fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS)-enriched D1-expressing SPNs and 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-treated rats. DRD1 activation causes enhanced TrkB translocation to the cell surface and increased sensitivity for BDNF. In contrast, dopamine depletion in cultured dSPN neurons, 6-OHDA-treated rats, and postmortem brain of patients with PD reduces BDNF responsiveness and causes formation of intracellular TrkB clusters. These clusters associate with sortilin related VPS10 domain containing receptor 2 (SORCS-2) in multivesicular-like structures, which apparently protects them from lysosomal degradation. Thus, impaired TrkB processing might contribute to disturbed motor function in PD.

The macroscopic coherence in superconductors supports dissipationless supercurrents that could play a central role in emerging quantum technologies. Accomplishing unequal supercurrents in the forward and backward directions would enable unprecedented functionalities. This nonreciprocity of critical supercurrents is called the superconducting (SC) diode effect. We demonstrate the strong SC diode effect in conventional SC thin films, such as niobium and vanadium, employing external magnetic fields as small as 1 Oe. Interfacing the SC layer with a ferromagnetic semiconductor EuS, we further accomplish the nonvolatile SC diode effect reaching a giant efficiency of 65%. By careful control experiments and theoretical modeling, we demonstrate that the critical supercurrent nonreciprocity in SC thin films could be easily accomplished with asymmetrical vortex edge and surface barriers and the universal Meissner screening current governing the critical currents. Our engineering of the SC diode effect in simple systems opens the door for novel technologies while revealing the ubiquity of the Meissner screening effect induced SC diode effect in superconducting films, and it should be eliminated with great care in the search for exotic superconducting states harboring finite-momentum Cooper pairing.

A deeper understanding of these aspects can lead to the emergence of novel technologies and medical advances, potentially leading to the development of innovative treatments and diagnostic tools.

Recent studies have shown the potential for bipolar thermoelectricity in superconducting tunnel junctions with asymmetric energy gaps. The thermoelectric performance of these systems is significantly impacted by the inverse proximity effects present in the normal-superconducting bilayer, which is utilized to adjust the gap asymmetry in the junction. Here, we identify the most effective bilayer configurations, and we find that directly tunnel-coupling the normal metal side of the cold bilayer with the hot superconductor is more advantageous compared to the scheme used in experiments. By utilizing quasiclassical equations, we examined the nonlinear thermoelectric junction performance as a function of the normal metal film thickness and the quality of the normal-superconducting interface within the bilayer, thereby determining the optimal design to observe and maximize this nonequilibrium effect. Our results offer a roadmap to achieve improved thermoelectric performance in superconducting tunnel junctions, with promising implications for a number of applications.

Spin-flip excitations of iron porphyrin molecules on Au(111) are investigated with a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The molecules adopt two distinct adsorption configurations on the surface that exhibit different magnetic anisotropy energies. Density functional theory calculations show that the different structures and excitation energies reflect unlike occupations of the Fe 3d levels. We demonstrate that the magnetic anisotropy energy can be controlled by changing the adsorption site, the orientation, or the tip–molecule distance.

We present an overview of the contributions made by Konstantin B. Efetov and the authors to the field of triplet odd-frequency superconductivity in hybrid ferromagnet–superconductor structures (Bergeret et al., 2005) and the repercussions they had on experimental and theoretical research. Konstantin B. Efetov passed away in August 2021. We hope the present short review gives a faithful testimony of an important part of his scientific legacy.

Electrodeposition has appeared in the last year as a non-expensive and versatile technique for the growth of nanomaterials. We review the main characteristics of electrodeposition that make this technique very suitable for its combination with different nanofabrication tools and the possibilities that this combination offers to fabricate nanowires and more complex tridimensional nanostructures. Finally, we overview the present and future impact of electrodeposition on the fabrication of a novel generation of nanomaterials with potential impact in nanomagnetism and spintronics.
