Abstract Homeostasis comprises one of the main features of living organisms that enables their robust functioning by adapting to environmental changes. In particular, thermoregulation, as an instance of homeostatic behavior, allows mammals to maintain stable internal temperature with tightly controlled self-regulation independent of external temperatures. This is made by a proper reaction of the thermoeffectors (like skin blood vessels, brown adipose tissue (BAT), etc.) on a wide range of temperature perturbations that reflect themselves in the thermosensitive neurons’ activity. This activity is being delivered to the respective actuation points and translated into thermoeffectors’ actions, which bring the temperature of the organism to the desired level, called a set-point. However, it is still an open question whether these mechanisms can be implemented in an analog electronic device: both on a system theoretical and a hardware level. In this paper, we transfer this control loop into a real electric circuit by designing an analog electronic device for temperature regulation that works following bio-inspired principles. In particular, we construct a simplified single-effector regulation system and show how spiking trains of thermosensitive artificial neurons can be processed to realize an efficient feedback mechanism for the stabilization of the a priori unknown but system-inherent set-point. We also demonstrate that particular values of the set-point and its stability properties result from the interplay between the feedback control gain and activity patterns of thermosensitive artificial neurons, for which, on the one hand, the neuronal interconnections are generally not necessary. On the other hand, we show that such connections can be beneficial for the set-point regulation and hypothesize that the synaptic plasticity in real thermosensitive neuronal ensembles can play a role of an additional control layer empowering the robustness of thermoregulation. The electronic realization of temperature regulation proposed in this paper might be of interest for neuromorphic circuits which are bioinspired by taking the basal principle of homeostasis on board. In this way, a fundamental building block of life would be transferred to electronics and become a milestone for the future of neuromorphic engineering.

Urban water drainage systems represent complex networks with nonlinear dynamics and different types of interactions. This yields an involved modeling problem for which different off-line simulation approaches are available. Nevertheless, these approaches cannot be used for real-time simulations, i.e., running in parallel to weather now- and forecasts and enabling the monitoring and automatic control of urban water drainage systems. Alternative approaches, used commonly for automation purposes, involve parameterized linear delay systems, which can be used in real-time but lack the necessary level of detail, which, in particular, is required for adequate flood risk prognostics. Given this setup, in the present paper, an approach for the effective modeling of detailed water drainage systems for real-time applications implemented with the open-source Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) software is addressed and exemplified for a part of the water drainage system of the city of Flensburg in northern Germany. Additionally, a freely available early-warning system prototype is introduced and used to combine weather forcast information on a 2-h prediction horizon with the developed model and available measurements. This prototype is subsequently used for data assimilation using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) for the considered area in Flensburg.

The problem of designing a system for monitoring the spread of dengue in a mixed population of humans and mosquitos is addressed. For this purpose a model–based observer approach is employed based on a model that describes the actual number of infected humans (with constant population size) and mosquitos (with time–varying population size) and which has been previously validated with data from different regions of the state of Morelos in Mexico using the number of new reported cases as available measurement. This model has time–varying reproduction parameters for the mosquitos and thus enables to account for different climatic conditions in the course of the year (in particular the rain and dry periods) that affect the mosquito population size. An analysis of the structural observability, based on the preliminary assumption of a continuous measurement of the accumulative number of reported cases of human infections is carried out to motivate a reduced order model that is structurally observable. For this reduced order model a continuous–discrete extended Kalman Filter is designed as basis for the monitoring and prediction scheme. The approach is validated using real data from Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, showing a high potential for future developments towards automated monitoring schemes.

Batteries are complex systems involving spatially distributed microscopic mechanisms on different time scales whose adequate interplay is essential to ensure a desired functioning. Describing these phenomena yields nonlinearly coupled partial differential equations whose numerical solution requires considerable effort and computation time, making it an infeasible solution for real-time applications. Anyway, having information about the internal electrochemical states of the battery can pave the way for many different advanced monitoring and control strategies with a big potential for improving efficiency and longevity. For such purposes, in the present paper, a combination of a low-order representation of the essential dynamics associated to the internal electrochemical mechanisms based on Dynamic Mode Decomposition for control (DMDc) is proposed to obtain an improved equivalent circuit model (ECM) representation with continuously updated parameters and combined with an extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The model-order reduction step extensively exploits the model structure, yielding a well structured low-order representation without artificial numerical correlations. The performance of the proposed method is illustrated with numerical simulations based on a well-established reference model, showing its potential usefulness in real-time applications requiring knowledge of the internal electrochemical states besides the state-of-charge.

The application of autoencoders in combination with Dynamic Mode Decomposition for control (DMDc) and reduced order observer design as well as Kalman Filter design is discussed for low order state reconstruction of a class of scalar linear diffusion-convection-reaction systems. The general idea and conceptual approaches are developed following recent results on machine-learning based identification of the Koopman operator using autoencoders and DMDc for finite-dimensional discrete-time system identification. The resulting linear reduced order model is combined with a classical Kalman Filter for state reconstruction with minimum error covariance as well as a reduced order observer with very low computational and memory demands. The performance of the two schemes is evaluated and compared in terms of the approximated L2 error norm in a numerical simulation study. It turns out, that for the evaluated case study the reduced-order scheme achieves comparable performance with significantly less computational load.

A constructive approach is provided for the reconstruction of stationary and non-stationary patterns in the one-dimensional Gray-Scott model, utilizing measurements of the system state at a finite number of locations. Relations between the parameters of the model and the density of the sensor locations are derived that ensure the exponential convergence of the estimated state to the original one. The designed observer is capable of tracking a variety of complex spatiotemporal behaviors and self-replicating patterns. The theoretical findings are illustrated in particular numerical case studies. The results of the paper can be used for the synchronization analysis of the master–slave configuration of two identical Gray–Scott models coupled via a finite number of spatial points and can also be exploited for the purposes of feedback control applications in which the complete state information is required.

Haematococcus Pluvialis is a type of freshwater green unicellular microalgae that can be used as economical natural source of astaxanthin. To guarantee optimal algae production and the proper conditions for the obtainment of high yield of astaxanthin, the growth process should be carefully monitored and controlled. When on-line measurements are not available, state estimators can provide a useful tool for process monitoring. In this paper a geometric observer is designed based on an extended version of the Droop model for microalgae growth, identified on the basis of batch experiments. The observer functioning and convergence are tested using experimental data obtained from a laboratory scale bioreactor.

The problem of controlling a spreading process in a two-layer multiplex networks in such a way that the extinction state becomes a global attractor is addressed. The problem is formulated in terms of a Markov-chain based susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) dynamics in a complex multilayer network. The stabilization of the extinction state for the nonlinear discrete-time model by means of appropriate adaptation of system parameters like transition rates within layers and between layers is analyzed using a dominant linear dynamics yielding global stability results. An answer is provided for the central question about the essential changes in the step from a single to a multilayer network with respect to stability criteria and the number of nodes that need to be controlled. The results derived rigorously using mathematical analysis are verified using statical evaluations about the number of nodes to be controlled and by simulation studies that illustrate the stability property of the multilayer network induced by appropriate control action.

In this paper the problem of designing an output-feedback control for the stabilization of the extinction steady-state in a virus spreading process over a complex network with quarantine is considered. Sufficient conditions are established for the choice of those nodes for which sensor information is necessary and those which should be controlled using notions from constructive control theory. A simple output-feedback control is proposed which exponentially stabilizes the extinction state. Numerical simulation results are provided to illustrate the functioning of the proposed control scheme for a scale-free network of N = 106 nodes.

The problem of stabilizing the spreading process to a prescribed probability distribution over a complex network is considered, where the dynamics of the nodes in the network is given by discrete-time Markov-chain processes. Conditions for the positioning and identification of actuators and sensors are provided, and sufficient conditions for the exponential stability of the desired distribution are derived. Simulations results for a network of N = 10 6 corroborate our theoretical findings.
