Abstract

Any dielectric lens has a finite closed boundary and therefore is, in fact, an open dielectric resonator capable of supporting resonant modes whose Q-factor depends of the lens parameters (size, shape, and material). The hemielliptic lens, that is an essential building block of many mm-wave and THz antennas, is not an exception: it supports the so-called halfbowtie (HBT) resonances that can strongly affect performance of such antennas. In this paper we illustrate the interplay between the optical and modal features in the electromagnetic behaviour of hemielliptic lenses and highlight the drastic influence of the HBT resonances on radiation characteristics of lens antennas. We also discuss the difficulties associated with accurate description of the resonant phenomena in compact-size hemielliptic lenses with conventional techniques and provide recommendations on how to minimize the parasitic impact of HBT resonances on the antenna performance., 5 pages 6 figures

Abstract

Correlation between the lens extension size and the broadside directivity of a hemielliptic dielectric lens antenna (DLA) fed by a primary feed with variable radiation pattern is studied in accurate manner. The problem is considered in two-dimensional formulation and solved numerically using in-house software based on the Muller boundary integral equations. Our results highlight the key role of the edge taper which can be defined for DLAs similarly to the theory of reflector antennas. A new feature revealed is the relation between the optimal edge taper needed to achieve the highest possible directivity and the permittivity of the lens material., Comment: 5 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

The paper presents a microwave metal disk antenna with axis-symmetric excitation operating in the TM010 mode. Experimental investigations of the input characteristics of the antenna, and of the near-fields and the radiation pattern, have been performed. It was shown that the antenna forms a conical radiation pattern, oriented 36° to the zenith, and has a bandwidth of 18% that can be evaluated as a record for antennas of this kind. The antenna also has a level of side radiation as well as a cross-component level less than -25 dB. Within the working frequency band, the radiation pattern width and the direction of maximum radiation change by 17% and 40%, respectively. The experimental results agree well with theoretical predictions.

16. Analysis of an arbitrary profile reflector antenna system having resistive type surface - E-polarization case

Abstract

The regularized solution is performed for arbitrary shape conic section profile geometry. In this case the reflector surface is taken as made up of resistive type material. The problem is formulated depending on the circular 2 pi periodicity and then Fourier series coefficients of the surface current density are obtained. The resultant matrix equation is in the regularized form. Then the various numerical results are obtained for different eccentricity factor of the conic section and the resisitvity of the reflector surface.
