We consider the two-dimensional topological Chern insulator in the presence of static disorder. Generic quantum states in this system are Anderson localized. However, topology requires the presence of a subset of critical states, with diverging localization length (the Chern insulator analog of the `center of the Landau band states' of the quantum Hall insulator.) We discuss geometric criteria for the identification of these states at weak disorder, and their extension into the regime of strong disorder by analytical methods. In this way, we chart a critical surface embedded in a phase space spanned by energy, topological control parameter, and disorder strength. Our analytical predictions are supplemented by a numerical analysis of the position of the critical states, and their multifractal properties., 13 pages, 6 figures

Fermi's Golden Rule (FGR) applies in the limit where an initial quantum state is weakly coupled to a {\it continuum} of other final states overlapping its energy. Here we investigate what happens away from this limit, where the set of final states is discrete, with a nonzero mean level spacing; this question arises in a number of recently investigated many-body systems. For different symmetry classes, we analytically and/or numerically calculate the universal crossovers in the average decay of the initial state as the level spacing is varied, with the Golden Rule emerging in the limit of a continuum. Among the corrections to the exponential decay of the initial state given by FGR is the appearance of the spectral form factor in the long-time regime for small but nonzero level spacing., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, supplementary material

From the perspective of many body physics, the transmon qubit architectures currently developed for quantum computing are systems of coupled nonlinear quantum resonators. A significant amount of intentional frequency detuning (disorder) is required to protect individual qubit states against the destabilizing effects of nonlinear resonator coupling. Here we investigate the stability of this variant of a many-body localized (MBL) phase for system parameters relevant to current quantum processors of two different types, those using untunable qubits (IBM type) and those using tunable qubits (Delft/Google type). Applying three independent diagnostics of localization theory -- a Kullback-Leibler analysis of spectral statistics, statistics of many-body wave functions (inverse participation ratios), and a Walsh transform of the many-body spectrum -- we find that these computing platforms are dangerously close to a phase of uncontrollable chaotic fluctuations., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, Supplemental Material (4 pages, 4 figures). Tunnel spectroscopy data for the detection of Majorana bound states (MBS) is often criticized for its proneness to misinterpretation of genuine MBS with low-lying Andreev bound states. Here, we suggest a protocol removing this ambiguity by extending single shot measurements to sequences performed at varying system parameters. We demonstrate how such sampling, which we argue requires only moderate effort for current experimental platforms, resolves the statistics of Andreev side lobes, thus providing compelling evidence for the presence or absence of a Majorana center peak., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

A wave function exposed to measurements undergoes pure state dynamics, with deterministic unitary and probabilistic measurement induced state updates, defining a quantum trajectory. For many-particle systems, the competition of these different elements of dynamics can give rise to a scenario similar to quantum phase transitions. To access it despite the randomness of single quantum trajectories, we construct an $n$-replica Keldysh field theory for the ensemble average of the $n$-th moment of the trajectory projector. A key finding is that this field theory decouples into one set of degrees of freedom that heats up indefinitely, while $n-1$ others can be cast into the form of pure state evolutions generated by an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. This decoupling is exact for free theories, and useful for interacting ones. In particular, we study locally measured Dirac fermions in $(1+1)$ dimensions, which can be bosonized to a monitored interacting Luttinger liquid at long wavelengths. For this model, the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian corresponds to a quantum Sine-Gordon model with complex coefficients. A renormalization group analysis reveals a gapless critical phase with logarithmic entanglement entropy growth, and a gapped area law phase, separated by a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. The physical picture emerging here is a pinning of the trajectory wave function into eigenstates of the measurement operators upon increasing the monitoring rate., Comment: 21+9 pages, 6 figures

The interplay between disorder and topology triggers interesting effects for the propagation of quantum particles in low-dimensional network structures. For instance, the occurrence of Anderson localization, a commonly observed effect in a quantum network with static disorder, can be suppressed by introducing topology-a phenomenon dubbed as topological Anderson localization transition [1] . In one-dimensional systems, for example, disorder induces localization on a short length scale while topology counters that through long-range correlations, yielding divergent correlation length and extremely slow spreading at quantum criticality. However, its experimental demonstration still remains an outstanding challenge as that would require, in contrast to Anderson localization transition, addi¬tional control over internal degrees of freedom, which is hard to implement, for instance, in cold-atom systems [2] . Quantum walks (QWs), a quantum analog of random walks, comprising quantum coin toss and conditioned step operations are already established for studying quantum transport phenomena, such as, disorder and topology [5] . Based on our theoretical proposal [3] , here, we provide an experimental route using time-multiplexed quantum walk [4] for evidencing the targeted phenomenon.

We consider one-dimensional quantum walks in optical linear networks with synthetically introduced disorder and tunable system parameters allowing for the engineered realization of distinct topological phases. The option to directly monitor the walker's probability distribution makes this optical platform ideally suited for the experimental observation of the unique signatures of the one-dimensional topological Anderson transition. We analytically calculate the probability distribution describing the quantum critical walk in terms of a (time staggered) spin polarization signal and propose a concrete experimental protocol for its measurement. We generalize Page's result on the entanglement entropy of random pure states to the many-body eigenstates of realistic disordered many-body systems subject to long range interactions. This extension leads to two principal conclusions: first, for increasing disorder the "shells" of constant energy supporting a system's eigenstates fill only a fraction of its full Fock space and are subject to intrinsic correlations absent in synthetic high-dimensional random lattice systems. Second, in all regimes preceding the many-body localization transition individual eigenstates are thermally distributed over these shells. These results, corroborated by comparison to exact diagonalization for an SYK model, are at variance with the concept of "non-ergodic extended states" in many-body systems discussed in the recent literature., Comment: 4+ pages, 2 figures, supplementary material

We present a full symmetry classification of fermion matter in and out of thermal equilibrium. Our approach starts from first principles, the ten different classes of linear and anti-linear state transformations in fermionic Fock spaces, and symmetries defined via invariance properties of the dynamical equation for the density matrix. The object of classification are then the generators of reversible dynamics, dissipation and fluctuations featuring in the generally irreversible and interacting dynamical equations. A sharp distinction between the symmetries of equilibrium and out of equilibrium dynamics, respectively, arises from the different role played by `time' in these two cases: In unitary quantum mechanics as well as in `micro-reversible' thermal equilibrium, anti-linear transformations combined with an inversion of time define time reversal symmetry. However, out of equilibrium an inversion of time becomes meaningless, while anti--linear transformations in Fock space remain physically significant, and hence must be considered in autonomy. The practical consequence of this dichotomy is a novel realization of antilinear symmetries (six out of the ten fundamental classes) in non-equilibrium quantum dynamics that is fundamentally different from the established rules of thermal equilibrium. At large times, the dynamical generators thus symmetry classified determine the steady state non-equilibrium distributions for arbitrary interacting systems. To illustrate this principle, we consider the fixation of a symmetry protected topological phase in a system of interacting lattice fermions. More generally, we consider the practically important class of mean field interacting systems, represented by Gaussian states. We present a fully analytical description of a many body localization (MBL) transition in a microscopically defined model. Its Hamiltonian is the sum of one- and two-body operators, where both contributions obey a maximum-entropy principle and have no symmetries except hermiticity (not even particle number conservation). These two criteria paraphrase that our system is a variant of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We will demonstrate how this simple `zero-dimensional' system displays numerous features seen in more complex realizations of MBL. Specifically, it shows a transition between an ergodic and a localized phase, and non-trivial wave function statistics indicating the presence of `non-ergodic extended states'. We check our analytical description of these phenomena by parameter free comparison to high performance numerics for systems of up to $N=15$ fermions. In this way, our study becomes a testbed for concepts of high-dimensional quantum localization, previously applied to synthetic systems such as Cayley trees or random regular graphs. We believe that this is the first many body system for which an effective theory is derived and solved from first principles. We propose a continuous weak measurement protocol testing the nonlocality of Majorana bound states through current shot noise correlations. The experimental setup contains a topological superconductor island with three normal-conducting leads weakly coupled to different Majorana states. Putting one lead at finite voltage and measuring the shot noise correlations between the other two (grounded) leads, devices with true Majorana states are distinguished from those without by strong current correlations. The presence of true Majoranas manifests itself in unusually high noise levels or the near absence of noise, depending on the chosen device configuration. Monitoring the noise statistics amounts to a weak continuous measurement of the Majorana qubit and yields information similar to that of a full braiding protocol, but at much lower experimental effort. The observable properties of topological quantum matter are often described by topological field theories. We here demonstrate that this principle extends beyond thermal equilibrium. To this end, we construct a model of two-dimensional driven open dynamics with a Chern insulator steady state. Within a Keldysh field theory approach, we show that under mild assumptions - particle number conservation and purity of the stationary state - an abelian Chern-Simons theory describes its response to external perturbations. As a corollary, we predict chiral edge modes stabilized by a dissipative bulk., 9 pages, 5 figures

Electronic transport in nanostructures, such as long molecules or 2D exfoliated flakes, often goes through a nearly degenerate set of single-particle orbitals. Here we show that in such cases a conspiracy of the narrow band and strong e-e interactions may stabilize a non-Fermi-liquid phase in the universality class of the complex Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Focusing on signatures in quantum transport, we demonstrate the existence of anomalous power laws in the temperature dependent conductance, including algebraic scaling ${T}^{3/2}$ in the inelastic cotunneling channel, separated from the conventional Fermi liquid ${T}^{2}$ scaling via a quantum phase transition. The relatively robust conditions under which these results are obtained indicate that the SYK non-Fermi-liquid universality class might not be as exotic as previously thought.

We evaluate the finite temperature partition sum and correlation functions of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. Starting from a recently proposed mapping of the SYK model onto Liouville quantum mechanics, we obtain our results by exact integration over conformal Goldstone modes reparameterizing physical time. Perhaps, the least expected result of our analysis is that at time scales proportional to the number of particles the out of time order correlation function crosses over from a regime of exponential decay to a universal $t^{-6}$ power-law behavior., 25 pages, 3 figures, minor changes, version accepted for publication

We investigate the appearance of chaos in a microbial 3-species model motivated by a potentially chaotic real world system (as characterized by positive Lyapunov exponents (Becks et al., Nature 435, 2005). This is the first quantitative model that simulates characteristic population dynamics in the system. A striking feature of the experiment was three consecutive regimes of limit cycles, chaotic dynamics and a fixed point. Our model reproduces this pattern. Numerical simulations of the system reveal the presence of a chaotic attractor in the intermediate parameter window between two regimes of periodic coexistence (stable limit cycles). In particular, this intermediate structure can be explained by competition between the two distinct periodic dynamics. It provides the basis for stable coexistence of all three species: environmental perturbations may result in huge fluctuations in species abundances, however, the system at large tolerates those perturbations in the sense that the population abundances quickly fall back onto the chaotic attractor manifold and the system remains. This mechanism explains how chaos helps the system to persist and stabilize against migration. In discrete populations, fluctuations can push the system towards extinction of one or more species. The chaotic attractor protects the system and extinction times scale exponentially with system size in the same way as with limit cycles or in a stable situation.

The anomalous Floquet Anderson insulator (AFAI) is a two dimensional periodically driven system in which static disorder stabilizes two topologically distinct phases in the thermodynamic limit. The presence of a unit-conducting chiral edge mode and the essential role of disorder induced localization are reminiscent of the integer quantum Hall (IQH) effect. At the same time, chirality in the AFAI is introduced via an orchestrated driving protocol, there is no magnetic field, no energy conservation, and no (Landau level) band structure. In this paper we show that in spite of these differences the AFAI topological phase transition is in the IQH universality class. We do so by mapping the system onto an effective theory describing phase coherent transport in the system at large length scales. Unlike with other disordered systems, the form of this theory is almost fully determined by symmetry and topological consistency criteria, and can even be guessed without calculation. (However, we back this expectation by a first principle derivation.) Its equivalence to the Pruisken theory of the IQH demonstrates the above equivalence. At the same time it makes predictions on the emergent quantization of transport coefficients, and the delocalization of bulk states at quantum criticality which we test against numerical simulations., 15 pages, 5 figures

We analytically study spectral correlations and many body wave functions of a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model deformed by a random Hamiltonian diagonal in Fock space. Our main result is the identification of a wide range of intermediate coupling strengths where the spectral statistics is of Wigner-Dyson type, while wave functions are nonuniformly distributed over Fock space. The structure of the theory suggests that such manifestations of nonergodic extendedness may be a prevalent phenomenon in many body chaotic quantum systems.

We consider granular quantum matter defined by Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dots coupled via random one-body hopping. Within the framework of Schwarzian field theory, we identify a zero-temperature quantum phase transition between an insulating phase at weak and a metallic phase at strong hopping. The critical hopping strength scales inversely with the number of degrees of freedom on the dots. The increase of temperature out of either phase induces a crossover into a regime of strange metallic behavior.

We show that the coupling of homogeneous Heisenberg spin-1/2 ladders in different phases leads to the formation of interfacial zero energy Majorana bound states. Unlike Majorana bound states at the interfaces of topological quantum wires, these states are void of topological protection and generally susceptible to local perturbations of the host spin system. However, a key message of our work is that in practice they show a high degree of resilience over wide parameter ranges which may make them interesting candidates for applications., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

In this work we address the physics of individual three dimensional Weyl nodes subject to a moderate concentration of disorder. Previous analysis indicates the presence of a quantum phase transition below which disorder becomes irrelevant and the integrity of sharp nodal points of vanishing spectral density is preserved in this system. This statement appears to be at variance with the inevitable presence of statistically rare fluctuations which cannot be considered as weak and must have strong influence on the system's spectrum, no matter how small the average concentration. We here reconcile the two pictures by demonstrating that rare fluctuation potentials in the Weyl system generate a peculiar type of resonances which carry spectral density in any neighborhood of zero energy, but never at zero. In this way, the vanishing of the DoS for weak disorder survives the inclusion of rare events. We demonstrate this feature by considering three different models of disorder, each emphasizing specific aspects of the problem: a simplistic box potential model, a model with Gaussian distributed disorder, and one with a finite number of $s$-wave scatterers. Our analysis also explains why the protection of the nodal DoS may be difficult to see in simulations of finite size lattices., 13+3 pages, 4 figures

We show that the proper inclusion of soft reparameterization modes in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model of $N$ randomly interacting Majorana fermions reduces its long-time behavior to that of Liouville quantum mechanics. As a result, all zero temperature correlation functions decay with the universal exponent $\propto \tau^{-3/2}$ for times larger than the inverse single particle level spacing $\tau\gg N\ln N$. In the particular case of the single particle Green function this behavior is manifestation of the zero-bias anomaly, or scaling in energy as $\epsilon^{1/2}$. The mixedness of a quantum state is usually seen as an adversary to topological quantization of observables. For example, exact quantization of the charge transported in a so-called Thouless adiabatic pump is lifted at any finite temperature in symmetry-protected topological insulators. Here, we show that certain directly observable many-body correlators preserve the integrity of topological invariants for mixed Gaussian quantum states in one dimension. Our approach relies on the expectation value of the many-body momentum-translation operator, and leads to a physical observable --- the "ensemble geometric phase" (EGP) --- which represents a bona fide geometric phase for mixed quantum states, in the thermodynamic limit. In cyclic protocols, the EGP provides a topologically quantized observable which detects encircled spectral singularities ("purity-gap" closing points) of density matrices. While we identify the many-body nature of the EGP as a key ingredient, we propose a conceptually simple, interferometric setup to directly measure the latter in experiments with mesoscopic ensembles of ultracold atoms., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

We describe designs for the realization of topological Majorana qubits in terms of proximitized topological insulator nanoribbons pierced by a uniform axial magnetic field. This platform holds promise for particularly robust Majorana bound states, with easily manipulable inter-state couplings. We propose proof-of-principle experiments for initializing, manipulating, and reading out Majorana box qubits defined in floating devices dominated by charging effects. We present a replica path integral approach describing the quantum chaotic dynamics of the SYK model at large time scales. The theory leads to the identification of non-ergodic collective modes which relax and eventually give way to an ergodic long time regime (describable by random matrix theory). These modes, which play a role conceptually similar to the diffusion modes of dirty metals, carry quantum numbers which we identify as the generators of the Clifford algebra: each of the $2^N$ different products that can be formed from $N$ Majorana operators defines one effective mode. The competition between a decay rate quickly growing in the order of the product and a density of modes exponentially growing in the same parameter explains the characteristics of the system's approach to the ergodic long time regime. We probe this dynamics through various spectral correlation functions and obtain favorable agreement with existing numerical data., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

We consider critical quantum transport in disordered topological quantum wires at the transition between phases with different topological indexes. Focusing on the example of thermal transport in class D (`Majorana') quantum wires, we identify a transport universality class distinguished for anomalous retardation in the propagation of excitations -- a quantum generalization of Sinai diffusion. We introduce an analytic approach to many-body localization (MBL) in random spin chains. We consider MBL within a first quantized framework where it becomes a localization phenomenon in the high-dimensional lattice defined by the Hilbert space of the clean system. Designed in analogy with the field-theory description of single particle localization, our approach describes wave package propagation on that lattice after a disorder average has been performed and the system is controlled by only a few universal parameters. We discuss the stability of an ergodic weak disorder and a localized strong disorder phase, respectively, and demonstrate that the latter is protected by mechanisms which put MBL outside the universality class of Anderson localization.

Surface codes offer a very promising avenue towards fault-tolerant quantum computation. We argue that two-dimensional interacting networks of Majorana bound states in topological superconductor/semiconductor heterostructures hold several distinct advantages in that direction, both concerning the hardware realization and the actual operation of the code. We here discuss how topologically protected logical qubits in this Majorana surface code architecture can be defined, initialized, manipulated, and read out. All physical ingredients needed to implement these operations are routinely used in topologically trivial quantum devices. In particular, we show that by means of quantum interference terms in linear conductance measurements, composite single-electron pumping protocols, and gate-tunable tunnel barriers, the full set of quantum gates required for universal quantum computation can be implemented., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

In disordered Weyl semimetals, mechanisms of topological origin lead to novel mechanisms of transport, which manifest themselves in unconventional types of electromagnetic response. Prominent examples of transport phenomena particular to the Weyl context include the anomalous Hall effect, the chiral magnetic effect, and the formation of totally field dominated regimes of transport in which the longitudinal conductance is proportional to an external magnetic field. In this paper, we discuss the manifestations of these phenomena at large length scales including the cases of strong disorder and/or magnetic field which are beyond the scope of diagrammatic perturbation theory. Our perhaps most striking finding is the identification of a novel regime of drift/diffusion transport where diffusion at short scales gives way to effectively ballistic dynamics at large scales, before a re-entrance to diffusion takes place at yet larger scales. We will show that this regime plays a key role in understanding the interplay of the various types of magnetoresponse of the system. Our results are obtained by describing the strongly disordered system in terms of an effective field theory of Chern-Simons type.
