EEG studies play a crucial role in enhancing our understanding of brain development across the lifespan. The increasing clinical and policy implications of EEG research underscore the importance of utilizing reliable EEG measures and increasing the reproducibility of EEG studies. However, important data characteristics like reliability, effect sizes, and data quality metrics are often underreported in pediatric EEG studies. This gap in reporting could stem from the lack of accessible computational tools for quantifying these metrics for EEG data. To help address the lack of reporting, we developed a toolbox that facilitates the estimation of internal consistency reliability, effect size, and standardized measurement error with user-friendly software that facilitates both computing and interpreting these measures. In addition, our tool provides subsampled reliability and effect size in increasing numbers of trials. These estimates offer insights into the number of trials needed for detecting significant effects and reliable measures, informing the minimum number of trial thresholds for the inclusion of participants in individual difference analyses and the optimal trial number for future study designs. Importantly, our toolbox is integrated into commonly used preprocessing pipelines to increase the estimation and reporting of data quality metrics in developmental neuroscience.

The paper presents the design and analysis of a three-phase static converter, composed of a Rectifier with Near Sinusoidal Input Currents (RNSIC), which ensures the DC bus voltage level for a three phase Incomplete Bridge Inverter (IBI), used to drive an asynchronous motor. The proposed circuit has a low input current harmonic content, can ensure the load overcurrent protection and has a better reliability. The converter can be designed to provide any required output maximum power under a desired DC link bus voltage.

In this paper, a new topology for a two-quadrant converter is presented. In the AC/DC transfer mode, the converter works as a rectifier with near sinusoidal input currents (RNSIC), while in the DC/AC transfer mode it works as a square-wave pulse switching inverter. We offer some suggestions for the converter design and realize a comparison with a two-quadrant PWM converter. The new converter is characterized by smaller power losses, reduced EMI problems and higher reliability.

Abstract Bacteria have evolved diverse antiviral defence mechanisms to protect themselves against phage infection. Phages integrated into bacterial chromosomes, known as prophages, also encode defences that protect the bacterial hosts in which they reside. Here, we identify a type of anti-phage defence that interferes with the virion assembly pathway of invading phages. The protein that mediates this defence, which we call Tab (for ‘Tail assembly blocker’), is constitutively expressed from a Pseudomonas aeruginosa prophage. Tab allows the invading phage replication cycle to proceed, but blocks assembly of the phage tail, thus preventing formation of infectious virions. While the infected cell dies through the activity of the replicating phage lysis proteins, there is no release of infectious phage progeny, and the bacterial community is thereby protected from a phage epidemic. Prophages expressing Tab are not inhibited during their own lytic cycle because they express a counter-defence protein that interferes with Tab function. Thus, our work reveals an anti-phage defence that operates by blocking virion assembly, thereby both preventing formation of phage progeny and allowing destruction of the infected cell due to expression of phage lysis genes.

Given the persistent safety incidents in operating rooms (ORs) nationwide (approx. 4,000 preventable harmful surgical errors per year), there is a need to better analyze and understand reported patient safety events. This study describes the results of applying the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) supported by the Teamwork Evaluation of Non-Technical Skills (TENTS) instrument to analyze patient safety event reports at one large academic medical center. Results suggest that suboptimal behaviors stemming from poor communication, lack of situation monitoring, and inappropriate task prioritization and execution were implicated in most reported events. Our proposed methodology offers an effective way of programmatically sorting and prioritizing patient safety improvement efforts.

The adolescent development age is the period between 10 and 19 years when a child becomes a young adult and learns to make important health decisions independently. Adolescents consenting to receive a vaccine without parental or legal guardian consent is adolescent self-consent. Adolescent self-consent for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine is a health policy issue that could increase vaccine uptake rates. Adolescent self-consent for the vaccine may increase adolescents' autonomy with their healthcare decisions. Pediatric advanced practice nurses and other healthcare providers should advocate for adolescents and encourage parents to allow adolescents to be more active regarding the HPV vaccine. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is currently regarded as a global public health crisis for which lifelong treatment with conventional drugs presents limitations in terms of side effects, accessibility, and cost. Type 2 diabetes (T2DM), usually associated with obesity, is characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, hyperlipidemia, chronic inflammation, impaired β-cell function, and insulin resistance. If left untreated or when poorly controlled, DM increases the risk of vascular complications such as hypertension, nephropathy, neuropathy, and retinopathy, which can be severely debilitating or life-threatening. Plant-based foods represent a promising natural approach for the management of T2DM due to the vast array of phytochemicals they contain. Numerous epidemiological studies have highlighted the importance of a diet rich in plant-based foods (vegetables, fruits, spices, and condiments) in the prevention and management of DM. Unlike conventional medications, such natural products are widely accessible, affordable, and generally free from adverse effects. Integrating plant-derived foods into the daily diet not only helps control the hyperglycemia observed in DM but also supports weight management in obese individuals and has broad health benefits. In this review, we provide an overview of the pathogenesis and current therapeutic management of DM, with a particular focus on the promising potential of plant-based foods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we investigate the utility of Ca _2 FeMnO _6- _δ and Sr _2 FeMnO _6- _δ as materials with low thermal conductivity, finding potential applications in thermoelectrics, electronics, solar devices, and gas turbines for land and aerospace use. These compounds, characterized as oxygen-deficient perovskites, feature distinct vacancy arrangements. Ca _2 FeMnO _6- _δ adopts a brownmillerite-type orthorhombic structure with ordered vacancy arrangement, while Sr _2 FeMnO _6- _δ adopts a perovskite cubic structure with disordered vacancy distribution. Notably, both compounds exhibit remarkably low thermal conductivity, measuring below 0.50 Wm ^−1 K ^−1 . This places them among the materials with the lowest thermal conductivity reported for perovskites. The observed low thermal conductivity is attributed to oxygen vacancies and phonon scattering. Interestingly as SEM images show the smaller grain size, our findings suggest that creating vacancies and lowering the grain size or increasing the grain boundaries play a crucial role in achieving such low thermal conductivity values. This characteristic enhances the potential of these materials for applications where efficient heat dissipation, safety, and equipment longevity are paramount.

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) regulates follicular growth and stimulates estrogen synthesis in the ovaries. FSH is a heterodimer consisting of an α subunit, also present in luteinizing hormone, and a unique β subunit, which is transcriptionally regulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1 (GNRH). Because most FSH is constitutively secreted, tight transcriptional regulation is critical for maintaining FSH levels within a narrow physiological range. Previously, we reported that GNRH induces FSHβ (Fshb) transcription via induction of the AP-1 transcription factor, a heterodimer of c-FOS and c-JUN. Herein, we identify c-JUN-dimerization protein 2 (JDP2) as a novel repressor of GNRH-mediated Fshb induction. JDP2 exhibited high basal expression and bound the Fshb promoter at an AP-1-binding site in a complex with c-JUN. GNRH treatment induced c-FOS to replace JDP2 as a c-JUN binding partner, forming transcriptionally active AP-1. Subsequently, rapid c-FOS degradation enabled reformation of the JDP2 complex. In vivo studies revealed that JDP2 null male mice have normal reproductive function, as expected from a negative regulator of the FSH hormone. Female JDP2 null mice, however, exhibited early puberty, observed as early vaginal opening, larger litters, and early reproductive senescence. JDP2 null females had increased levels of circulating FSH and higher expression of the Fshb subunit in the pituitary, resulting in elevated serum estrogen and higher numbers of large ovarian follicles. Disruption of JDP2 function therefore appears to cause early cessation of reproductive function, a condition that has been associated with elevated FSH in women.

Abstract Pronounced temporal and spatial variation in the availability of food resources can produce energetic deficits in organisms. Fruit-dependent Bornean orangutans face extreme variation in fruit availability and experience negative energy and protein balance during episodes of fruit scarcity. We evaluate the possibility that orangutans of different sexes and ages catabolize muscle tissue when the availability of fruit is low. We assess variation in muscle mass by examining the relationship between urinary creatinine and specific gravity and use the residuals as a non-invasive measure of estimated lean body mass (ELBM). Despite orangutans having a suite of adaptations to buffer them from fruit scarcity and associated caloric deficits, ELBM was lower during low fruit periods in all age-sex classes. As predicted, adult male orangutans had higher ELBM than adult females and immatures. Contrary to expectation, flanged and unflanged males did not differ significantly in ELBM. These findings highlight the precarity of orangutan health in the face of rapid environmental change and add to a growing body of evidence that orangutans are characterized by unique metabolic traits shaped by their unpredictable forest environment.

Objective: To investigate the initial set of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and their associations with 30-day surgical outcomes. Background: PROs provide important information that can be used to improve routine care and facilitate quality improvement. The American College of Surgeons conducted a demonstration project to capture PROs into the NSQIP to complement clinical data. Methods: From February 2020 to March 2023, 65 hospitals collected Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System measures assessing global health, pain interference, fatigue, and physical function from patients accrued into the NSQIP. Using multivariable mixed regression, we compared the scores of patients with and without 30-day complications and further analyzed scores exceeding 1-SD worse than national benchmarks. Results: Overall, 33842 patients completed the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System measures with a median of 58 days (IQR: 47-72) postoperatively. Among patients without complications (n = 31210), 33.9% had PRO scores 1-SD worse than national benchmarks. Patients with complications were 1.7 times more likely to report worse PROs (95% CI: 1.6-1.8). Patients with complications had lower scores for global physical health [adjusted mean difference (AMD): 2.6, 95% CI: 2.2-3.0], lower for global mental health (AMD: 1.8, 95% CI: 1.4-2.2), higher for pain interference (AMD: 2.4, 95% CI: 2.0-2.8), higher fatigue (AMD: 2.7, 95% CI: 2.3-3.1), and lower physical function (AMD: 3.2, 95% CI: 2.8-3.5). Conclusions: Postoperative complications negatively affect multiple key dimensions of patients' health-related quality of life. PROs were well below national benchmarks for many patients, even among those without complications. Identifying solutions to improve PROs after surgery remains a tremendous quality improvement opportunity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The global ascendancy of Korean cosmetic products, propelled by the Korean Wave phenomenon, has fundamentally reshaped beauty standards and consumer behaviors worldwide. This study aimed to determine the factors influencing the use of Korean cosmetics among female university students in the Philippines, focusing on perceived authenticity, aesthetic appeal, and facial perception. A structured questionnaire was administered to 175 respondents from a private university in Metro Manila. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Spearman's rank correlation coefficient and regression analysis. Results indicated a statistically significant positive correlation between the perceived aesthetic appeal of packaging (β = .211, p < .006) and the usage of Korean cosmetics. Regression analysis confirmed that perceived aesthetic appeal was a determinant of product usage (R2 = 0.176, P ≤ 0.05). Facial attractiveness (β = .107, p = .165) were found to be statistically significantly correlated with usage, however, found to be not statistically significant determinant. Perceived authenticity (β = .005, p = .950) showed no correlation with product usage and not a determinant as well. These findings underscore the importance of visual aesthetics in consumer behavior among young Filipino consumers, providing strategic insights for brands in the competitive beauty market of the Philippines. Suicidal behavior and difficulty regulating emotions are hallmarks of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). This study examined neural links between emotion regulation and suicide risk in BPD. 60 individuals with BPD (all female, mean age = 28.9 years), 46 of whom had attempted suicide, completed a fMRI task involving recalling aversive personal memories. Distance trials assessed the ability to regulate emotion by recalling memories from a third-person, objective viewpoint. Immerse trials assessed emotional reactivity and involved recalling memories from a first-person perspective. Behaviorally, both groups reported less negative affect on Distance as compared to Immerse trials. Neurally, two sets of findings were obtained. The first reflected differences between attempters and non-attempters. When immersing and distancing, attempters showed elevated recruitment of lateral orbitofrontal cortex, a brain region implicated in using negative cues to guide behavior. When distancing, attempters showed diminished recruitment of the precuneus, a region implicated in memory recall and perspective taking. The second set of findings related to individual differences in regulation success - the degree to which individuals used distancing to reduce negative affect. Here, we observed that attempters who successfully regulated exhibited precuneus recruitment that was more similar to non-attempters. These data provide insight into mechanisms underlying suicide attempts in BPD. Future work may examine if these findings generalize to other diagnoses and also whether prior findings in BPD differ across attempters and non-attempters.

ABSTRACT Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen that causes infections in a variety of settings. Many P. aeruginosa isolates are infected by filamentous Pf bacteriophage integrated into the bacterial chromosome as a prophage. Pf virions can be produced without lysing P. aeruginosa. However, cell lysis can occur during superinfection, which occurs when Pf virions successfully infect a host lysogenized by a Pf prophage. Temperate phages typically encode superinfection exclusion mechanisms to prevent host lysis by virions of the same or similar species. In this study, we sought to elucidate the superinfection exclusion mechanism of Pf phage. Initially, we observed that P. aeruginosa that survive Pf superinfection are transiently resistant to Pf-induced plaquing and are deficient in twitching motility, which is mediated by type IV pili (T4P). Pf utilize T4P as a cell surface receptor, suggesting that T4P are suppressed in bacteria that survive superinfection. We tested the hypothesis that a Pf-encoded protein suppresses T4P to mediate superinfection exclusion by expressing Pf proteins in P. aeruginosa and measuring plaquing and twitching motility. We found that the Pf protein PA0721, which we termed Pf superinfection exclusion (PfsE), promoted resistance to Pf infection and suppressed twitching motility by binding the T4P protein PilC. Because T4P play key roles in biofilm formation and virulence, the ability of Pf phage to modulate T4P via PfsE has implications in the ability of P. aeruginosa to persist at sites of infection. IMPORTANCE Pf bacteriophage (phage) are filamentous viruses that infect Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enhance its virulence potential. Pf virions can lyse and kill P. aeruginosa through superinfection, which occurs when an already infected cell is infected by the same or similar phage. Here, we show that a small, highly conserved Pf phage protein (PA0721, PfsE) provides resistance to superinfection by phages that use the type IV pilus as a cell surface receptor. PfsE does this by inhibiting assembly of the type IV pilus via an interaction with PilC. As the type IV pilus plays important roles in virulence, the ability of Pf phage to modulate its assembly has implications for P. aeruginosa pathogenesis.

This pilot study explored the lived experiences of six young adults between the ages of 18–32 years grieving an intimate partner or spouse. Through Moustakas's (1994) steps of transcendental phenomenological analysis, four key themes revealed a traumatic initial period after the death, the importance of helpful vs dismissive community support, a continuation of meaningful activities and ritual to honor the deceased, and significant shifts in participants' life plans and worldviews. These themes suggest that clinicians may consider facilitating identity-restructuring exercises (e.g., journaling) and inclusive community spaces to support this unique population of grievers. Implications for future research are discussed, including the suggestion to create more targeted inclusion criteria to improve the clinical relevance of results in future studies.
