Enteric methane (CH4) emissions from sheep contribute to global greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. However, as already available for dairy and beef cattle, empirical models are needed to predict CH4 emissions from sheep for accounting purposes. The objectives of this study were to: 1) collate an intercontinental database of enteric CH4 emissions from individual sheep; 2) identify the key variables for predicting enteric sheep CH4 absolute production (g/d per animal) and yield [g/kg dry matter intake (DMI)] and their respective relationships; and 3) develop and cross-validate global equations as well as the potential need for age-, diet-, or climatic region-specific equations. The refined intercontinental database included 2,135 individual animal data from 13 countries. Linear CH4 prediction models were developed by incrementally adding variables. A universal CH4 production equation using only DMI led to a root mean square prediction error (RMSPE, % of observed mean) of 25.4% and an RMSPE-standard deviation ratio (RSR) of 0.69. Universal equations that, in addition to DMI, also included body weight (DMI + BW), and organic matter digestibility (DMI + OMD + BW) improved the prediction performance further (RSR, 0.62 and 0.60), whereas diet composition variables had negligible effects. These universal equations had lower prediction error than the extant IPCC 2019 equations. Developing age-specific models for adult sheep (>1-year-old) including DMI alone (RSR = 0.66) or in combination with rumen propionate molar proportion (for research of more refined purposes) substantially improved prediction performance (RSR = 0.57) on a smaller dataset. Pharmaceutical compounds in aquatic environments have been considered as emerging contaminants due to their potential risks to living organisms. Microalgae-based technology showed the feasibility of removing pharmaceutical contaminants. This review summarizes the occurrence, classification, possible emission sources, and environmental risk of frequently detected pharmaceutical compounds in aqueous environments. The efficiency, mechanisms, and influencing factors for the removal of pharmaceutical compounds through microalgae-based technology are further discussed. Pharmaceutical compounds frequently detected in aqueous environments include antibiotics, hormones, analgesic and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cardiovascular agents, central nervous system drugs (CNS), antipsychotics, and antidepressants, with a concentration ranging from ng/L to μg/L. Microalgae-based technology majorly remove the pharmaceutical compounds through bioadsorption, bioaccumulation, biodegradation, photodegradation, and co-metabolism. This review identifies the opportunities and challenges for microalgae-based technology and proposed suggestions for future studies to tackle challenges. The findings of this review advance our understanding of the occurrence and fate of pharmaceutical contaminants in aqueous environments, highlighting the potential of microalgae-based technology for pharmaceutical contaminants removal.

This study aimed to determine the influence of sorghum ensiled with unsalable pumpkin at 20 or 40% dry matter (DM) basis on rumen fermentation characteristics and rumen microbial communities using the rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC). The experiment used a completely randomised design including silages comprising (1) 100% sorghum; (2) 80% sorghum + 20% DM pumpkin; or (3) 60% sorghum + 40% DM pumpkin. Each RUSITEC run (n = 2) was 15 d long, including 6 d of adaptation and 9 d of sampling. Dry matter digestibility (DMD) was measured on d 8 and 10-13. Gas production was measured daily, whereas methane and volatile fatty acids (VFA) production were measured from d 7-15. Solid-associated microbes (SAM) were collected on d 5, 10 and 15, whereas liquid-associated microbes (LAM) were collected after 15-d incubation. The V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene and the ITS1 region were sequenced to identify archaeal, bacterial and fungal communities. Ensiling 40% DM pumpkin with sorghum increased DMD and decreased the ratio of acetate to propionate (P ≤ 0.01). Both bacterial SAM and LAM communities were dominated by Megasphaera, and had the highest relative abundance (P = 0.03) with 40% DM pumpkin after 5 d incubation in the SAM community, while species of the Aspergillus genus dominated fungal SAM and LAM communities with 20 or 40% DM unsalable pumpkin. Therefore, ensiling up to 40% DM unsalable pumpkin with sorghum produces a high-quality ruminant feed with minimal influence on the rumen microbial population. Copper ion (Cu2+) and zinc ion (Zn2+) are widely co-existent in anaerobic digestion effluent as typical contaminants. This work aims to explore how Cu2+-Zn2+ association affects physiological properties of S. platensis using Schlösser medium (SM) and sterilized anaerobic digestion effluent (SADE). Microalgae cells viability, biochemical properties, uptake of Cu2+ and Zn2+, and risk assessment associated with the biomass reuse as additives to pigs were comprehensively assessed. Biomass production ranged from 0.03 to 0.28 g/L in SM and 0.63 to 0.79 g/L in SADE due to the presence of Cu2+ and Zn2+. Peak value of chlorophyll-a and carotenoid content during the experiment decreased by 70-100% and 40-100% in SM, and by 70-77% and 30-55% in SADE. Crude protein level reduced by 4-41% in SM and by 65-75% in SADE. The reduction ratio of these compounds was positively related to the Cu2+ and Zn2+ concentrations. Maximum value of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids was both obtained at 0.3 Cu + 2.0 Zn (50.8% and 22.8%, respectively) and 25% SADE reactors (33.8% and 27.7%, respectively). Uptake of Cu in biomass was facilitated by Zn2+ concentration (> 4.0 mg/L). Risk of S. platensis biomass associated with Cu2+ was higher than Zn2+. The objective of this study was to characterise in situ digestion kinetics and bacterial colonisation of crop sorghum ensiled with unsalable carrot or pumpkin at 0, 20 or 40% dry matter (DM). Silages with or without the application of a commercial probiotic were incubated in situ for 0, 3, 6, 9, 24 and 48 h. Calculation of in situ digestion kinetics was conducted for DM, organic matter and neutral detergent fibre (aNDF). The V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was sequenced to determine the composition and diversity of bacteria colonising the silage. Organic matter and DM digestion kinetics indicated that greater vegetable inclusion increased (P 0.05) the soluble fraction and effective degradability. Bacterial richness at 48 h incubation was greater (P = 0.02) in 20% carrot and 40% pumpkin treatments, compared with the control. An effect of level × probiotic was observed with increased Shannon diversity (P = 0.01) for 40% carrot and 20% pumpkin probiotic treatments, respectively. Primary colonising bacteria were members of the Prevotella genus, dominating after 3 and 6 h of incubation. The abundance of Prevotella increased by 4.1% at 3 h (P 0.01) and by 4.7% at 9 h incubation with probiotics, compared with the control. Secondary biofilm colonisers included members of Treponema, Saccharofermentans, Fibrobacter, Ruminobacter and Anaerosporobacter genera, dominant from 9 h incubation onward. This study demonstrated that including unsalable vegetables at 20 or 40% DM increases the soluble fraction and effective degradability of sorghum silage during in situ digestion and increases diversity of bacteria colonising ensiled vegetables within the rumen. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of enhanced biochar (EB) on growth performance, carcass quality, and feeding behavior of feedlot steers fed high-forage and high-grain diets. A total of 160 crossbred steers (initial 286 ± 26 kg body weight [BW]) were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 16 pens (10 steers per pen), 8 of which were equipped with the GrowSafe system for monitoring feeding behavior. Treatments were EB included in the diet at 0% (control), 0.5%, 1.0%, or 2.0% (dry matter [DM] basis) with four pens per treatment. The backgrounding phase (84 d) was divided into four 21-d periods, and the finishing phase (112 d) was divided into four 28-d periods, with a 28-d transition period for dietary adaptation. Pen was the experimental unit for all parameters except for feeding behavior, where steer was considered the experimental unit. Treatment was included as a fixed effect, and period was considered a repeated measure. Total weight gain and overall average daily gain (ADG) tended to decrease (P = 0.06) with 2.0% EB. There was no effect (P ≥ 0.13) of EB on dry matter intake (DMI), gain-to-feed ratio (G:F), net energy for gain, ADG, or final BW for the backgrounding or finishing phases. There was a treatment × period effect (P < 0.05) of EB on DMI, ADG, and G:F for both backgrounding and finishing phases. Hot carcass weight, dressing %, back fat, rib-eye area, and meat yield were not affected (P ≥ 0.26) by EB. Lean meat yield was increased (P = 0.03) by 2.0% EB compared to all other treatments. Compared to the control, 2.0% EB increased (P = 0.02) the number of carcasses that achieved Canada 1 grade. More (P = 0.05) carcasses from control steers were graded as Canada 3 as compared to those fed 0.5% or 2.0% EB. Quality grade and incidences of liver abscesses were not affected (P ≥ 0.44) by EB. Enhanced biochar had no effect (P ≥ 0.11) on feeding behavior during backgrounding or finishing phases. In conclusion, EB did not result in changes in growth rate, feed efficiency, or feeding behavior in feedlot cattle, but 2.0% EB increased lean carcass yield grade.

Purpose of Review: In this paper, we critically review the current state of nutritional management strategies to reduce methane emissions resulting from enteric fermentation in livestock production. In this context, it highlights the novel strategy regarding the use of macroalgal- and microalgal-derived feed additives. Recent Findings: Several feed management strategies for ruminants focus on the inclusion of nutritional supplements, increasing proportion of starch, or supplementation with high-energy lipids. These strategies aim to improve animal productivity, whilst at the same time reduce methane emissions. Algae supplements are currently investigated as novel ingredients for decreasing methanogenesis, with the potential production of algal biomass also contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, utilisation of algal biomass as a feed concentrate in dietary supplementation presents a sustainable and environmentally friendly strategy. Summary: This review summarises the current stage of research on dietary strategies and their influences on the metabolic processes during enteric fermentation. This information is essential for developing strategies to mitigate methane emissions in the livestock industry. We specifically present the opportunities that algae could offer as a feed additive for methanogenic reduction in cattle. The data compiled from the peer-reviewed literature revealed synergistic effects of algal biomass on methane reduction and animal productivity. However, the challenges regarding the mass cultivation of macro- and microalgae were noticed. Considering the diversity of algal species, future research should increase screening efforts to include more species and dosage evaluation, along with efforts to see if such effects are sustained over time.

This study investigated the effect of feeding unsaleable carrots to lambs within a total-mixed ration (TMR) on performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality and sensory parameters. Thirty-six Australian Merino wether lambs were fed a control (barley-based) or carrot-based TMR for 11-weeks. Carrot-fed lambs had 2.7% higher cold dressing percentage (P = 0.03) while consuming less than control lambs. Subcutaneous fat of carrot-fed lambs contained less branch-chained, and more cis- and trans-monounsaturated fatty acids (FA; P ≤ 0.01) compared to control-fed lambs, which tended (P = 0.08) to have higher concentrations of polyunsaturated FA, despite the Longissimus lumborum (LL) muscle being unchanged by diet. Under retail display conditions, L* and hue values were lower (P ≤ 0.04) for 5 d aged LL samples from carrot-fed lambs. No differences were observed in other meat quality and sensory parameters between diets. Therefore, feeding unsaleable carrots at 45% DM in a TMR can improve lamb performance and carcass characteristics, while maintaining meat quality and FA composition.

This study evaluates the feasibility of a novel rumen membrane bioreactor (rumen MBR) to produce volatile fatty acids (VFA) from crop residues (i.e. lignocellulosic biomass). Rumen MBR can provide a sustainable route for VFA production by mimicking the digestive system of ruminant animals. Rumen fluid was inoculated in a reactor coupled with ultrafiltration (UF) membrane and fed with maize silage and concentrate feed at 60:40% (w/w). Continuous VFA production was achieved at an average daily yield of 438 mg VFA/g substrate. The most abundant VFA were acetic (40–80%) and propionic (10–40%) acids. The majority (73 ± 15%) of produced VFA was transferred through the UF membrane. Shifts in dominant rumen microbes were observed upon the transition from in vivo to in vitro environment and during reactor operation, however, stable VFA yield was maintained for 35 days, providing the first proof-of-concept of a viable rumen MBR.

Vegetables regarded as unsalable at processing often undergo disposal into landfill, threatening food security and increasing emissions through decomposition. Ensiling vegetables with forage crops is a suggested method of waste reduction that could also double as a livestock feed. Carrot or pumpkin, ensiled at 0%, 20% or 40% DM with crop sorghum, and with or without a second-generation silage inoculant were assessed for nutritive composition, organic acid profiles, aerobic stability and in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics. Silage was sampled after 70-days ensiling for nutrient composition, 14-day aerobic stability, organic acid profiles and microbial diversity. Sorghum ensiled with carrot or pumpkin at 20% or 40% DM increased crude fat (P ≤ 0.01) and decreased (P ≤ 0.01) silage surface temperature upon aerobic exposure compared to the control. Bacterial communities analyzed through 16S rRNA gene sequencing linearly increased (P ≤ 0.01) in diversity as vegetable proportion increased in the silage; dominated by Lactobacillus species. Upon assessment in vitro, there was an increase (P ≤ 0.04) in in vitro digestibility and some CH4 parameters (% CH4, and mg CH4/g DM), with no effect (P ≥ 0.17) on remaining CH4 parameters (mL CH4/g DM, mg CH4/g DMD), gas production or pH. However, increasing vegetable proportion decreased acetic and increased propionic acid concentrations respectively, decreasing A:P ratio and total VFA as a result (P ≤ 0.01). Results from this study indicate including carrot or pumpkin at 20% or 40% DM in a sorghum silage can produce a highly digestible, microbially diverse and energy-rich livestock feed whilst acting as a method of waste diversion of considerable environmental benefit.

Globally there are approximately 1 billion beef cattle which are raised in both intensive and extensive production systems. Even in intensive production systems, forage usually accounts for more than 80% of the feed, with calves only receiving high grain diets during a 3–4 month finishing period. The majority of beef cattle are maintained on vast areas of tame and native pastures, where the rumen microbial population converts consumed forages into metabolic products that support the production of protein, mineral and vitamin-rich meat. Production efficiency is higher and the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions lower in intensive than extensive systems. Intensive systems rely more on the use of grains and by-products that are deemed unfit for human consumption, but these feeds can promote digestive disturbances if not properly fed. Intensive systems can also promote disease transmission and the accumulation of nutrients in the form of manure at the site of production. Extensive tame and native pastures harbor vast stores of carbon and promote biodiversity, as these ecosystems are among the most threatened on the planet. Pastures must be managed in a manner that optimizes forage quality while avoiding overgrazing. However, these regions will only produce a reasonable quantity of food for humans if cattle are maintained as an integral component of these ecosystems. If the future demand for beef is to be satisfied, steps need to be taken to adapt beef production systems to climate change. Sustainable intensification of beef production systems is likely the only way to achieve this goal and will require precision feeding, additives that improve efficiency and advanced molecular techniques, like gene editing, to accelerate genetic progress. Humanity needs to accept that sustainable intensification of beef production is a prerequisite to satisfy the future demand for meat.

Ruminants play an important role in food security, but there is a growing concern about the impact of cattle on the environment, particularly regarding greenhouse gas emissions. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of humic substances (HS) on rumen fermentation, nutrient digestibility, methane (CH4) emissions, and the rumen microbiome of beef heifers fed a barley silage-based diet. The experiment was designed as a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square using 8 ruminally cannulated Angus × Hereford heifers (758 ± 40.7 kg initial BW). Heifers were offered a basal diet consisting of 60% barley silage and 40% concentrate (DM basis) with either 0- (control), 100-, 200- or 300-mg granulated HS/kg BW. Each period was 28 d with 14 d of adaptation. Rumen samples were taken on day 15 at 0, 3, 6, and 12 h postfeeding. Total urine and feces were collected from days 18 to 22. Blood samples were taken on day 22 at 0 and 6 h postfeeding. Between days 26 and 28, heifers were placed in open-circuit respiratory chambers to measure CH4. Ruminal pH was recorded continuously during the periods of CH4 measurement using indwelling pH loggers. Intake was similar (P = 0.47) across treatments. Concentration of ammonia-N and counts of rumen protozoa responded quadratically (P = 0.03), where both increased at H100 and then decreased for the H300 treatments. Apparent total tract digestibility of CP (P = 0.04) was linearly increased by HS and total N retention (g/d, % N intake, g/kg BW0.75) was improved (P = 0.04) for HS when compared with the control. There was no effect of HS on CH4 production (g/d; P = 0.83); however, HS decreased the relative abundance of Proteobacteria (P = 0.04) and increased the relative abundance of Synergistetes (P = 0.01) and Euryarchaeota (P = 0.04). Results suggest that HS included at up to 300 mg/kg BW may improve N retention and CP digestibility, but there was no impact on CH4 production.

The objective of this study was to examine the effect of engineered biocarbon (EB) on rumen fermentation, apparent total tract digestibility, methane (CH4) emissions and the rumen and fecal microbiome of Angus × Hereford heifers fed a barley silage-based diet. The experiment was a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square using 8 ruminally cannulated heifers (565 ± 35 kg initial BW). The basal diet contained 60% barley silage, 35% barley grain and 5% mineral supplement with EB added at 0% (control), 0.5%, 1.0%, or 2.0% (DM basis). Each period was 28-d consisting of 14-d adaptation and 14-d of measurements. Samples for profiling of the microbiome in rumen liquid, solids and feces were collected on d-15 before feeding. Rumen samples for fermentation characterization were taken at 0, 3, 6, and 12-h post feeding. Total collection of urine and feces was conducted from d-18 to 22. Heifers were housed in open-circuit respiratory chambers on d-26 to 28 to estimate CH4 emissions. Ruminal pH was recorded at 1-min intervals during CH4 measurements using indwelling pH loggers. Data were analyzed with the fixed effects of dietary treatment and random effects of square, heifer within square and period. Dry matter intake was similar across treatments (P = 0.21). NH3-N concentration and protozoa counts responded quadratically (P = 0.01) to EB. Minimum pH was increased (P = 0.04), and variation of pH was decreased (P = 0.03) by 2.0% EB. Total tract digestibility, N balance and CH4 production were not affected (P ≥ 0.17) by EB. EB affected the relative abundance of Fibrobacter (P = 0.05), Spirochaetaes (P = 0.01), Verrucomicrobia (P = 0.02), Tenericutes (P = 0.01), and Elusimicrobia (P = 0.02). Results suggest that at the examined concentrations, EB was ineffective at decreasing enteric CH4 emissions, however it altered the rumen microbiome.

Incorporation of carrot or pumpkin at 0, 20 or 40% dry matter (DM-basis) with crop maize, with or without a silage inoculant was evaluated after 70 days ensiling for microbial community diversity, nutrient composition, and aerobic stability. Inclusion of carrots or pumpkin had a strong effect on the silage bacterial community structure but not the fungal community. Bacterial microbial richness was also reduced (P = 0.01) by increasing vegetable proportion. Inverse Simpson’s diversity increased (P = 0.04) by 18.3% with carrot maize silage as opposed to pumpkin maize silage at 20 or 40% DM. After 70 d ensiling, silage bacterial microbiota was dominated by Lactobacillus spp. and the fungal microbiota by Candida tropicalis, Kazachstania humilis and Fusarium denticulatum. After 14 d aerobic exposure, fungal diversity was not influenced (P ≥ 0.13) by vegetable type or proportion of inclusion in the silage. Inoculation of vegetable silage lowered silage surface temperatures on day-7 (P = 0.03) and day-14 (P ≤ 0.01) of aerobic stability analysis. Our findings suggest that ensiling unsalable vegetables with crop maize can successfully replace forage at 20 or 40% DM to produce a high-quality livestock feed.

© 2019 Elsevier Ltd This study investigated the production of biogas, volatile fatty acids (VFAs), and other soluble organic from lignocellulosic biomass by two microbial communities (i.e. rumen fluid and anaerobic sludge). Four types of abundant lignocellulosic biomass (i.e. wheat straw, oaten hay, lurence hay and corn silage)found in Australia were used. The results show that rumen microbes produced four-time higher VFAs level than that of anaerobic sludge reactors, indicating the possible application of rumen microorganism for VFAs generation from lignocellulosic biomass. VFA production in the rumen fluid reactors was probably due to the presence of specific hydrolytic and acidogenic bacteria (e.g. Fibrobacter and Prevotella). VFA production corroborated from the observation of pH drop in the rumen fluid reactors indicated hydrolytic and acidogenic inhibition, suggesting the continuous extraction of VFAs from the reactor. Anaerobic sludge reactors on the other hand, produced more biogas than that of rumen fluid reactors. This observation was consistent with the abundance of methanogens in anaerobic sludge inoculum (3.98% of total microbes)compared to rumen fluid (0.11%). VFA production from lignocellulosic biomass is the building block chemical for bioplastic, biohydrogen and biofuel. The results from this study provide important foundation for the development of engineered systems to generate VFAs from lignocellulosic biomass.

As contamination with cereal ergot has been increasing in western Canada, this study evaluated impacts of feeding a mycotoxin binder (Biomin&reg, II, BB) on nutrient digestibility, alkaloid recovery in feces, and lamb growth performance. Forty-eight ram lambs (25.9 &plusmn, 1.4 kg) were randomly assigned to one of four barley-based diets: Control (C), no added alkaloids, Control + BB fed at 30 g/head per day (CBB), Ergot, 2564 ppb total R + S epimers (E), Ergot + BB, 2534 ppb R + S epimers (EBB). Lambs were fed ab libitum for up to 11 weeks until slaughter at &gt, 46 kg live weight. Both average daily gain (ADG) and gain/feed ratio were greater (p &lt, 0.01) for lambs fed C and CBB diets as compared with those containing added ergot, although dry matter intake was not affected by dietary ergot or BB. Serum prolactin concentrations were two times higher in EBB- compared with E-fed lambs (p &lt, 0.05), although both were lower than in C or CBB (p &lt, 0.001) lambs. Rectal temperatures were greater in lambs receiving dietary ergot (p &le, 0.001) than in C- and CBB-fed lambs. In a digestibility study using eight ram lambs, treatment with BB increased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) digestibility (p = 0.01). Nitrogen retention (g) was greater (p &lt, 0.05) for lambs receiving C or CBB compared with ergot-contaminated diets. Feces of EBB lambs had 38.5% greater (p &lt, 0.001) recovery of alkaloids compared with those fed E. Based on sparing of prolactin, BB may reduce impacts of ergot alkaloids by increasing their excretion in feces. Accordingly, concentrations of dietary alkaloids, which would not harm sheep, would be increased by feeding BB.

Enteric methane (CH) production attributable to beef cattle contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. Reliably estimating this contribution requires extensive CH emission data from beef cattle under different management conditions worldwide. The objectives were to: 1) predict CH production (g d animal), yield [g (kg dry matter intake; DMI)] and intensity [g (kg average daily gain)] using an intercontinental database (data from Europe, North America, Brazil, Australia and South Korea); 2) assess the impact of geographic region, and of higher- and lower-forage diets. Linear models were developed by incrementally adding covariates. A K-fold cross-validation indicated that a CH production equation using only DMI that was fitted to all available data had a root mean square prediction error (RMSPE; % of observed mean) of 31.2%. Subsets containing data with ≥25% and ≤18% dietary forage contents had an RMSPE of 30.8 and 34.2%, with the all-data CH production equation, whereas these errors decreased to 29.3 and 28.4%, respectively, when using CH prediction equations fitted to these subsets. The RMSPE of the ≥25% forage subset further decreased to 24.7% when using multiple regression. Europe- and North America-specific subsets predicted by the best performing ≥25% forage multiple regression equation had RMSPE of 24.5 and 20.4%, whereas these errors were 24.5 and 20.0% with region-specific equations, respectively. The developed equations had less RMSPE than extant equations evaluated for all data (22.5 vs. 23.2%), for higher-forage (21.2 vs. 23.1%), but not for the lower-forage subsets (28.4 vs. 27.9%). Splitting the dataset by forage content did not improve CH yield or intensity predictions. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of Propionibacterium freudenreichii (strain T54; PB) and flaxseed oil (FO) in a total mixed ration on ruminal fermentation, CH4production and fatty acid biohydrogenation in two artificial rumens (RUSITEC). The experiment consisted of 8 d of adaptation and 12 d of sample collection with four replicate fermenters per treatment. Treatments were: (1) CON; (2) PB; (3) FO (60 g kg−1DM with autoclaved PB); (4) FOPB (60 g kg−1DM with PB). Disappearance of DM (g kg−1DM) and gas production (mL g−1DM) were not affected by treatment (P>0.05). Inclusion of FOPB increased (P=0.01) total volatile fatty acid (VFA) production (mmol d−1), compared with CON and PB. The acetate:propionate ratio was reduced (P−1DM or mL g−1DMD) was lowest (P4compared with CON. Fatty acid profiles for PB were similar (P>0.05) to CON for most fatty acids. Concentrations of 18:3n-3 were greater (P4production under the current conditions as a result of increasing propionate production.

Following the extraction of oil for biodiesel production, oilseed press cakes are high in fat. As the dietary supplementation of fat is currently considered the most promising strategy of consistently depressing methanogenesis, it follows that oilseed press cakes may have a similar potential for CH4 abatement. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of replacing barley grain with increasing concentrations of wheat dry distillers' grains with solubles (WDDGS) on the growth performance and fatty acid profile of adipose tissue in lambs. Increasing concentration of WDDGS was achieved by replacing barley grain with WDDGS. Thirty-nine weaned crossbred lambs were completely randomized by weight and assigned to three dietary treatments (control, 200 g/kg WDDGS, and 400 g/kg WDDGS). Increasing WDDGS in the diet affected eating rate, total daily intake, and average daily gain. Total saturated fatty acids, monounsaturated fatty acids, and polyunsaturated fatty acids in subcutaneous fat were unaltered, but proportions of linolenic acid were increased. This study suggests that a concentrated diet containing 400 g/kg WDDGS fed to lambs as replacement of barley grain, improved lamb intake and growth performance as compared to a barley-based diet.

Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of increasing concentrations of glycerol in concentrate diets on total tract digestibility, methane (CH4) emissions, growth, fatty acid profiles, and carcass traits of lambs. In both experiments, the control diet contained 57% barley grain, 14.5% wheat dried distillers grain with solubles (WDDGS), 13% sunflower hulls, 6.5% beet pulp, 6.3% alfalfa, and 3% mineral-vitamin mix. Increasing concentrations (7, 14, and 21% dietary DM) of glycerol in the dietary DM were replaced for barley grain. As glycerol was added, alfalfa meal and WDDGS were increased to maintain similar concentrations of CP and NDF among diets. In Exp.1, nutrient digestibility and CH4 emissions from 12 ram lambs were measured in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square experiment. In Exp. 2, lamb performance was evaluated in 60 weaned lambs that were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to 1 of the 4 dietary treatments and fed to slaughter weight. In Exp. 1, nutrient digestibility and CH4 emissions were not altered (P = 0.15) by inclusion of glycerol in the diets. In Exp.2, increasing glycerol in the diet linearly decreased DMI (P < 0.01) and tended (P = 0.06) to reduce ADG, resulting in a linearly decreased final BW. Feed efficiency was not affected by glycerol inclusion in the diets. Carcass traits and total SFA or total MUFA proportions of subcutaneous fat were not affected (P = 0.77) by inclusion of glycerol, but PUFA were linearly decreased (P < 0.01). Proportions of 16:0, 10t-18:1, linoleic acid (18:2 n-6) and the n-6/n-3 ratio were linearly reduced (P < 0.01) and those of 18:0 (stearic acid), 9c-18:1 (oleic acid), linearly increased (P < 0.01) by glycerol. When included up to 21% of diet DM, glycerol did not affect nutrient digestibility or CH4 emissions of lambs fed barley based finishing diets. Glycerol may improve backfat fatty acid profiles by increasing 18:0 and 9c-18:1 and reducing 10t-18:1 and the n-6/n-3 ratio.

The objective of the present study was to compare the short term measurement (30 min/day for 3 days) face mask system (FM), with SF6 tracer and respiration chamber (RC) techniques for measuring CH4 emissions from crossbred (Holstein × Gyr) yearling bulls fed at three intake levels. Data were derived from 17 individuals in a completely randomized design experiment in a repeated measures scheme. Bulls were fed a diet consisting of 59.6% corn silage and 40.4% concentrate on a DM basis at three levels of DM intake (DMI) of 1.2% of BW, 1.8% of BW and ad libitum. After an adaptation period, CH4 emissions were measured first using the SF6 tracer technique, followed by the FM and RC techniques, respectively. Daily CH4 emission (g/day) from bulls differed (P < 0.007) with CH4 measurements techniques, with highest emissions measured using RC (107.9 ± 15.36), followed by FM (103.2 ± 11.86) then SF6 tracer technique (87.9 ± 10.16). The CH4 emissions adjusted for differences in DMI and BW did not differ among techniques, averaging 21.5 g/kg DMI and 0.4 g/kg BW, respectively. Total CH4 emissions (g/day) were positively correlated with DMI as measured by all three techniques (SF6r = 0.93; FM r = 0.93; RC r = 0.96). The concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) for CH4 emission (g/d) were 0.82, 0.82 and 0.74 for comparisons of SF6vs RC, FM vs RC and FM vs SF6, respectively. The day-to-day (21.3%) and animal-to-animal (13.4%) variation in CH4 yield (g/kg DMI) was greater from bulls using the FM technique, compared to SF6 (18.8% and 6.8%, respectively) and RC (12.9% and 7.5%, respectively) techniques. We conclude that the short-term FM technique generated CH4 measurements that were comparable to those estimated using SF6 and chamber techniques across a range of DMI levels. However, the FM method may have limitations in terms of assessing enteric CH4 mitigation strategies that are applied over a short duration to low numbers of animals due to higher animal-to-animal and day-to-day coefficients of variation than either the SF6 or RC techniques.

Tylosin phosphate is a macrolide commonly administered to cattle in North America for the control of liver abscesses. This study investigated the effect of in-feed administration of tylosin phosphate to cattle at subtherapeutic levels and its subsequent withdrawal on macrolide resistance using enterococci as an indicator bacterium. Faecal samples were collected from steers that received no antibiotics and steers administered tylosin phosphate (11 ppm) in-feed for 197 d and withdrawn 28 d before slaughter. Enterococcus species isolated from faecal samples were identified through sequencing the groES-EL intergenic spacer region and subject to antimicrobial susceptibility testing, identification of resistance determinants and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiling. Tylosin increased (P 0.05) between treatments on d 225. This suggests that antibiotic withdrawal prior to slaughter contributes to a reduction in the proportion of macrolide resistant enterococci entering the food chain. Among the 504 enterococci isolates characterised, E. hirae was found to predominate (n=431), followed by E. villorum (n=32), E. faecium (n=21), E. durans (n=7), E. casseliflavus (n=4), E. mundtii (n=4), E. gallinarum (n=3), E. faecalis (n=1), and E. thailandicus (n=1). The diversity of enterococci was greater in steers at arrival than at exit from the feedlot. Erythromycin resistant isolates harboured the erm(B) and/or msrC gene. Similar PFGE profiles of eryR E. hirae n pre- and post-antibiotic treatment suggests the increased abundance of eryR enterococci after administration of tylosin phosphate reflects selection for strains that were within the bovine gastrointestinal tract of cattle at arrival.

The aim of the study was to assess impacts of increasing dietary levels of glycerol on in vitro ruminal fermentation and CH4 production from a barley based feedlot diet. Glycerol was used as replacement for barley grain at inclusions of 0, 70, 140 and 210 g/kg of diet dry matter (DM) in a diet containing an equal mixture of barley grain and barley silage. Both grain and silage were dried and ground through a 1 mm screen before mixing with glycerol. The experiment was repeated (n = 2) using ANKOM® bags in 50 ml sealed batch culture serum vials (i.e., 0.5 g substrate + 25 ml media) with a 3:1 ratio of buffer:rumen liquor (n = 5 bags/treatment/experiment). Rumen liquor was obtained from two cows fed a diet containing 710 g/kg barley silage, 250 g/kg barley grain and 40 g/kg concentrate (DM basis). Gas production was measured by water displacement at 3, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 h after inoculation. Volumes corrected for gas released from 15 negative controls (i.e., no substrate) were used to estimate net gas production at 24 and 48 h. Gas samples collected at 24 and 48 h were analyzed for CH4 concentration. In vitro DM disappearance (IVDMD) and culture pH were measured at 48 h. Cumulative gas production as ml/g DM substrate and IVDMD were similar among treatments. Culture pH did not differ among treatments. Total CH4 production (as mg or as mg CH4/g digested DM) did not differ among treatments. Results suggest that replacing barley grain with glycerol did not reduce in vitro CH4 production as a function of digested DM or substrate DM.
