This research investigates the mechanical activation of kaolin as a supplementary cementitious material at the laboratory scale, aiming to optimize milling parameters using the response surface methodology. The study evaluated the effects of rotation speed and milling time on the amorphous phase content, the reduction in crystalline kaolinite, and impurity incorporation into the activated clay through the Rietveld method. The results demonstrated that adjusting milling parameters effectively enhanced clay activation, which is crucial for its use in low-carbon cements. High rotation speeds (300/350 rpm) and prolonged grinding times (90/120 min) in a planetary ball mill increased the pozzolanic activity by boosting the formation of amorphous phases from kaolinite and illite and reducing the particle size. However, the results evidenced that intermediate milling parameters are sufficient for reaching substantial degrees of amorphization and pozzolanic activity, avoiding the need for intensive grinding. Exceedingly aggressive milling introduced impurities like ZrO2 from the milling equipment wear, underscoring the need for a balanced approach to optimizing reactivity while minimizing impurities, energy consumption, and equipment wear. Achieving this balance is essential for efficient mechanical activation, ensuring the prepared clay’s suitability as supplementary cementitious materials without excessive costs or compromised equipment integrity.

Limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) is a recently developed binder with huge potential to reduce the clinker factor in cement and the environmental impact. This study aimed to evaluate the evolution of the research on LC3 by conducting a bibliometric analysis, evaluating key metrics such as publications, authorships, sources, or countries, to provide greater knowledge and a strategic vision of this technology. This work provides an important perspective of the field and elucidates the research trends and path that the LC3 technology followed from its beginning to date. The analysis reveals a noticeable increase in technology readiness and researchers' interest, as indicated by a significant rise in publications' number over time. Also, the authorship metrics reveal an important cooperation between communities in the development of this technology. The research on LC3 is essential since the technology is a viable and reliable approach to decreasing the cement industry's carbon footprint.

The potential of the least polluted fraction (from 8 to 30 mm) of municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) weathered bottom ash (WBA) as an alkali-activated cement precursor was evaluated. Alkali-activated WBA binders (AA-WBA) formulations were prepared through alkali-activation of WBA as sole precursor. Sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) mixtures with different pH's were used as alkali-activator solution. The effect of alkali-activator solution pH on the final properties was assessed. Results showed the hydrolytic stability of all formulations. The selective chemical extractions and physicochemical characterisation revealed the formation of the C–S–H, C–A–S–H, and (N,C)–A–S–H gels. The promising compressive strength results demonstrated the potential of AA-WBA binders. The increase of pH in the alkali-activated solution promotes the formation of gel reaction products and enhance mechanical properties. This investigation promotes the green cements manufacturing and the use of secondary resources to reduce the impact of natural resources extraction used for the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) production. Resumen: En el presente trabajo se evaluó el potencial como material precursor de la escoria procedente de la incineración de residuos urbanos (MSWI BA) en la formulación de cementos alcalinos. La fracción menos contaminada de escoria (8-30 mm), previamente madurada, se usó como único precursor para la formulación de aglutinantes alcalinos (AA-WBA). Como solución activadora se emplearon varias mezclas de silicato sódico (Na2SiO3) e hidróxido de sodio (NaOH) con diferentes concentraciones para evaluar el efecto del pH del activador en las propiedades finales del material. Los resultados verificaron la estabilidad hidrolítica de todas las formulaciones. La selección química extractiva y la caracterización físico-química reveló la formación de geles C-S-H, C-A-S-H y (N,C)-A-S-H. Los prometedores resultados de resistencia a compresión demostraron el potencial de los AA-WBA. El incremento del pH de la solución activadora contribuye a la formación de los productos de reacción y mejora las propiedades mecánicas. Esta investigación promueve la fabricación de cementos más respetuosos con el medio ambiente y el uso de materias primas provenientes de fuentes secundarias para minimizar la extracción de recursos naturales utilizados en la fabricación de cemento Portland.

Incineration bottom ashes (IBA) are the main waste from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration. In the Iberian countries (Portugal and Spain), MSW incineration with energy recovery (WtE) plays an important role in MSW management. IBA is highly produced and managed differently both between and within countries. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the management model of IBA using the Iberian Peninsula as a case study, addressing its properties, current management, incentives and difficulties in valorizing, and prospects. For this purpose, incineration plants of both countries were approached, and a broad literature review was conducted to gather information. About 10% and 41% of IBA have been landfilled in Portugal and Spain, respectively. Metals (mostly ferrous) from Portuguese (6% of IBA) and Spanish (9% of IBA) WtE plants are recycled. In Portugal, the remaining IBA (84%) has been temporarily stored (11%), applied to landfills as a substitute for soil in intermediate and final covers, construction of paths, accesses, and platforms (41%), or used in civil engineering work and road construction (48%). In Spain, the remaining IBA (50%) has been reused mainly as a secondary raw material in the construction and civil engineering fields (77%), while the rest has been temporarily stored (11%), applied in the conditioning of landfills (4%), alsoa secondary aggregate replacing natural materials. Both countries regulate IBA reuse outside landfills but consider different requirements and criteria. Nevertheless, there are both drivers and barriers to valorization. In the future, different IBA applications will likely continue to be developed, with the concern of protecting the environment. Growing confidence in IBA reuse following the publication of proper studies is expected. Globally, uniform legal frameworks among EU members with the same standards would likely lead to better IBA valorization.

During the glass selection process by optical sorting equipment, a rejection material called CSP (ceramic, stone, and porcelain) is generated, which is lower than 2 wt % of the glass cullet collected in Catalonia (Spain). Although this process should only separate non-glass impurities from the glass cullet, around 84 wt % of glass is found in the CSP. The CSP characterization reveals that CSP is mainly compound by SiO2, Al2O3, alkali metals, and CaO, which are key components for the alkali-activated cement (AAC) development. Consequently, this study is focused on the potential of CSP as a precursor to synthesize AAC. The concentration of the alkali activator (NaOH: 1 M, 4 M, and 8 M) and the liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio were tested in the formulation of the AAC. The AAC specimens at 28 days cured were evaluated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), apparent density (ρapp), and compressive strength (σs). The results obtained showed that the L/S of 0.5 and 4.0 M for NaOH concentration are the best conditions, due to the mechanical properties (ρapp = 1.75 g·cm−3; σs = 52.8 MPa), cohesion (SEM), and formed phases (XRD and FT-IR). Therefore, CSP can be a precursor for developing new, sustainable binders.

Alkali-activated binders (AABs) stand out as a promising alternative to replace ordinary Portland cement (OPC) due to the possibility of using by-products and wastes in their manufacturing. This paper assessed the potential of weathered bottom ash (WBA) from waste-to-energy plants and PAVAL® (PV), a secondary aluminium recycling process by-product, as precursors of AABs. WBA and PV were mixed at weight ratios of 98/2, 95/5, and 90/10. A mixture of waterglass (WG) and NaOH at different concentrations (4 and 6 M) was used as the alkaline activator solution. The effects of increasing NaOH concentration and PV content were evaluated. Alkali-activated WBA/PV (AA-WBA/PV) binders were obtained. Selective chemical extractions and physicochemical characterization revealed the formation of C-S-H, C-A-S-H, and (N,C)-A-S-H gels. Increasing the NaOH concentration and PV content increased porosity and reduced compressive strength (25.63 to 12.07 MPa). The leaching potential of As and Sb from AA-WBA/PV exceeded the threshold for acceptance in landfills for non-hazardous waste.

Within the thermal energy storage field, one of the main challenges of this study is the development of new enhanced heat storage materials to be used in the building sector. The purpose of this study is the development of alkali-activated cements (AACs) with mechanical properties to store high amounts of heat. These AACs incorporate wastes from industrial glass process as well as microencapsulated phase change materials (mPCMs) to improve the thermal inertia of building walls, and accordingly respective energy savings. The research presented below consists of the exhaustive characterization of different AACs formulated from some waste generated during the proper management of municipal waste used as precursor. In this case study, AACs were formulated with the waste generated during the recycling of glass cullet, namely ceramic, stone, and porcelain (CSP), which is embedding a mPCM. The addition of mPCM was used as thermal energy storage (TES) material. The mechanical properties were also evaluated in order to test the feasibility of the use of the new formulated materials as a passive TES system. The results showed that the AAC obtained from CSP (precursors) mixed with mPCMs to obtain a thermal regulator material to be implemented in building walls was reached successfully. The material developed was resistant enough to perform as insulating panels. The formulated materials had high storage capacity depending on the PCM content. The durability of the mPCM shell was studied in contact with alkaline medium (NaOH 4 M) and no degradation was confirmed. Moreover, the higher the content of mPCM, the lower the mechanical properties expected, due to the porosity increments with mPCM incorporation in the formulations.

The concern about the large amount of weathered bottom ash (WBA) produced in waste-to-energy plants (WtE) has caused an increased search for alternatives to reduce their environmental impact. The present study aims to provide an added value through the WBA valorization from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) for its use as a sole precursor for developing alkali-activated binders (AABs). Alkali-activated weathered bottom ash binders (AA-WBA) were formulated with a liquid-to-solid ratio of 1.0 and using sodium silicate (80 wt.%) and NaOH (20 wt.%) at different concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8M) as alkali-activator solutions. AA-WBA were cured at room temperature to extend their applicability. The effect of the alkali-activator solution molarity on the final properties of the AA-WBA was evaluated. The physicochemical characterization by XRD, FTIR, and SEM evidenced the presence of the typical phases (calcium silicate hydrate and gehlenite) of C-(A)-S-H gel. Leaching concentrations of As, Cu, and Mo exceed the acceptance in landfills for inert waste, while the leaching concentration of Sb exceeds the one for non-hazardous waste. The structure of the binders depends on the alkalinity of the activator, obtaining better results using NaOH 6M in terms of microstructure and compressive strength (6.7 MPa). The present study revealed that AA-WBA for non-structural purposes can be obtained. The AA-WBA formulation contributes to the WBA valorization and development of low-carbon cements; therefore, it is an encouraged alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). Considering the amounts and costs of the WBA, sodium silicate, NaOH, and water, the total cost of the developed formulations is comprised in a range between 137.6 and 153.9 €/Tn.
