BVI photometry of Triton and Proteus was derived from HST images taken in 1997. The VEGAMAG photometric technique was used. Triton was found to be brighter by a few percent than observations of the 1970's and 1980's, as expected due to the increasingly greater exposure of the bright south polar region. The leading side was also found to be brighter than the trailing side by 0.09 mag in all filters—50% larger than reported by Franz [Franz, O.G., 1981. Icarus 45, 602–606]. Contrary to our previous results [Pascu, D., et al., 1998. Bull. Am. Astron. Soc. 30, 1101], we found no episodic reddening. Our previous conclusions were based on an inaccurate early version of the Charge Transfer Efficiency (CTE) correction. The present result limits the start of the reddening event reported by Hicks and Buratti [Hicks, M.D., Buratti, B.J., 2004. Icarus 171, 210–218]. Our (B–V) result of 0.70 ± 0.01 supports the global blueing described by Buratti et al. [Buratti, B.J., Goguen, J.D., Gibson, J., Mosher, J., 1994. Icarus 110, 303–314]. Our observations of July 1997 agree with the Voyager results and are among the bluest colors seen. We found Proteus somewhat brighter than earlier studies, but in good agreement with the recent value given by Karkoschka [Karkoschka, E., 2003. Icarus 162, 400–407]. A leading/trailing brightness asymmetry was detected for Proteus, with the leading side 0.1 mag brighter. The unique differences in action of the endogenic and exogenic processes on Triton and Proteus provides an opportunity to separate the endogenic and exogenic effects on Triton.

We present new reconstructions of images of main belt Asteroids 9 Metis, 18 Melpomene, 19 Fortuna, 216 Kleopatra, and 624 Hektor, made with the uncorrected Wide-Field/Planetary Camera (WF/PC) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Deconvolution with the MISTRAL algorithm demonstrates that these asteroids are clearly resolved. We determine diameters, albedos, and lower limits to axial ratios for these bodies. We also review the process used to restore the aberrated images. No surface features or companions are found, but the rotation of 216 Kleopatra is clearly seen. The asteroidal albedos are similar to those determined by other procedures.

Six small inner satellites of Neptune were imaged in 1989 with Voyager 2. In 1997, we recovered the four outermost with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 for astrometric, dynamical, and photometric studies. The ring arcs were not detected in our images. Thirteen exposures were taken in each of three HST orbits: two orbits on July 3 and one on July 6. Exposures were taken in the BVI filters. Measurable images of Neptune and Triton were also obtained on the same PC1 frames with those of the faint satellites. We present here the astrometric observations of these four satellites relative to Neptune, as well as corrected orbital mean motions for them. Field distortions in the PC1 chip were corrected with both the Trauger et al. and the Anderson & King distortion models. Calibration of the scale and orientation was accomplished by comparing the measured positions of Neptune and Triton with an accurate JPL J2000 ephemeris. Separate calibrations were made for both distortion models. Small differences were detected in the calibrations, dependent on wavelength, saturation, and filter, and a small difference was found between the calibrations resulting from both distortion correction models. The resulting separation and position angle observations for the inner satellites were compared with the orbits of Owen et al. and corrections derived to their mean daily motions. A small but significant discrepancy was found for Proteus between the correction derived from the observations of separation and that from the position angles. This was shown not to be due to calibrational errors but, apparently, to the need for improvement of other orbital elements—at least for Proteus. Despite this anomaly, the mean motion accuracies were improved by almost 2 orders of magnitude as a result of the longer baseline since the Voyager observations. More HST observations of these satellites are recommended in order to improve their orbits further and for the investigation of satellite-ring interactions.

The Lyman edge at 912 A is an important diagnostic region for studying quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). In particular, it reveals a great deal about the physical conditions within the atmospheres of accretion disks, a ubiquitous component of QSO theories. A robust prediction of accretion disk models is a significant polarization due to electron scattering just longward (in wavelength) of the Lyman edge, because of the wavelength dependence of the hydrogen absorption opacity. Observations of the Lyman edge regions of QSOs have shown scant evidence for the predicted features; few QSOs show the broad, partial Lyman edges expected to be common according to most theories, and none show the high polarizations expected longward of the Lyman edge. Still, polarization spectra of a small number of QSOs have shown a rising polarization (up to 20%) at wavelengths shortward of the Lyman edge. We have now doubled our sample of intermediate-redshift QSOs observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Faint Object Spectrograph spectropolarimeter to determine the amount of polarization on both sides of the Lyman limit. For this new sample of six objects, polarizations are low and mostly consistent with zero below the Lyman edge. Another important result of the new data is that it strengthens the conclusion that quasars are generally not polarized significantly just longward of the Lyman edge at ~1000 A. There is no significant statistical wavelength dependence of the polarization longward of the Lyman edge, indicating that simple plane-parallel atmospheres with scattering-dominated opacity are not significant sources of UV flux in quasars.

The 10 small inner satellites of Uranus were discovered in 1986 with Voyager 2 and not seen again until 1994, when eight were recovered with the Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 for astrometric, dynamical, and photometric studies. Thirty-three exposures were taken on 1994 August 14 with the PC1 chip in the BVRI filters. Measurable images of Ariel and Miranda were also obtained on the same CCD frames with those of the faint satellites. We present here the astrometric observations of these eight satellites relative to Miranda, as well as corrected orbital mean motions for them. For the full-well images of Ariel and Miranda, the astrometric limitation was due to an inadequate geometric distortion correction and distance from center. For the faint inner satellites, the astrometric precision varied from 50 mas for Bianca (V = 23 mag) to 9 mas for Puck (V = 20 mag) and was due primarily to a centroiding error caused by a low signal-to-noise ratio. The orbits of Owen & Synnott for the inner satellites were compared with these observations and corrections derived to their mean daily motions. While the orbits of Owen & Synnott proved to be better than their errors indicated, the new mean motions are 2 orders of magnitude more precise.

Hubble Space Telescope images of asteroid 4 Vesta obtained during the favorable 1996 apparition show an impact crater 460 kilometers in diameter near the south pole. Color measurements within the 13-kilometer-deep crater are consistent with excavation deep into a high-calcium pyroxene-rich crust or olivine upper mantle. About 1 percent of Vesta was excavated by the crater formation event, a volume sufficient to account for the family of small Vesta-like asteroids that extends to dynamical source regions for meteorites. This crater may be the site of origin for the howardite, eucrite, and diogenite classes of basaltic achondrite meteorites.

The Planetary Camera of the WFPC2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope was used in late 1994 to record 56 images of Asteroid 4 Vesta in four compositionally diagnostic wavelength bands. The images were taken at eight epochs to give global coverage of Vesta at an aspect of approximately 16° north latitude. The prograde rotation of Vesta is clearly revealed by surface markings contributing to a hemispherical albedo difference.

HST images obtained over an interval of 71 hr at a scale of 52 km/pixel have been used to determine the spin pole, size, and shape of Vesta. Several bright and dark surface features allow control point stereogrammetric measurement of spin pole orientation. An independent solution of spin pole and shape can be made from the limb and terminator coordinates. A combined control point and limb solution for Vesta's rotation pole is at α 0 = 308° ± 10°, δ 0 = 48° ± 10°, J2000). Its shape can be fit by an ellipsoid of radii 280, 272, 227 (±12) km. The mean density of Vesta from the mass reported by Schubart and Matson (1979) is 3.8 ± 0.6 gm/cm 3 . For this density Vesta's shape is close to that of a Maclaurin spheroid with superposed variations of ∼15 km.

We utilize the 56 images of Asteroid 4 Vesta obtained through four mineralogically diagnostic filters by the Hubble Space Telescope (Zellneret al.1997,Icarus) to construct a geologic map. Vesta's surface is found to be geologically diverse and to be dichotomous at a hemispheric scale. The eastern hemisphere (longitude definition from Thomaset al.1997,Icarus) is dominated by units interpreted to be impact excavated plutonic material composed of magnesium-rich and calcium-poor pyroxene. The mineralogy of this region is most analogous to diogenite meteorites. Several eastern hemisphere units which have the deepest and broadest 1 μm absorption bands may contain a substantial olivine component. The locations of these units are consistent with a previous map based on rotationally resolved groundbased spectroscopy (Gaffey 1997,Icarus). The western hemisphere is dominated by units interpreted to consist of a single component of iron-rich and relatively calcium-rich pyroxene, analogous to surface basalts such as eucrite meteorites. We investigate the spectral properties of 20 representative surface regions and find a correlation between the 1 μm absorption band depth and albedo: the units with lower albedos have shallower band depths. Such a relation could arise from differences in lithologies, differences in surface particle sizes, or from a weathering effect which decreases albedo and band depth over time. Because of Vesta's geologic diversity and hemispheric dichotomy, it is apparent that any major impact events, such as those possibly related to the formation of the Vesta family (Binzel and Xu 1993,Science260,186–191) did not globally resurface the planet. The spectral evidence for remnants of a basaltic crust implies that the oldest units on the surface date back to the time of their emplacement, most likely ∼4.5 byr ago. If a weathering process exists which alters the albedo, then the lowest albedo units, such as the feature with the proposed name “Olbers,” most likely represent remnants of Vesta's ancient basaltic crust.

DURING its reconnaissance of the asteroid 243 Ida, the Galileo spacecraft returned images of a second object, 1993(243)1 Dactyl1— the first confirmed satellite of an asteroid. Sufficient data were obtained on the motion of Dactyl to determine its orbit as a function of Ida's mass. Here we apply statistical and dynamical arguments to constrain the range of possible orbits, and hence the mass of Ida. Combined with the volume of Ida2, this yields a bulk density of 2.6 ± 0.5 g cm−3. Allowing for the uncertainty in the porosity of Ida, this density range is consistent with a bulk chon-dritic composition, and argues against some (but not all) classes of meteoritic igneous rock types that have been suggested as compositionally representative of S-type asteroids like Ida.

The Hubble Space Telescope made systematic observations of the split comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 (SL9) (P designates a periodic comet) starting in July 1993 and continuing through mid-July 1994 when the fragments plunged into Jupiter's atmosphere. Deconvolutions of Wide Field Planetary Camera images indicate that the diameters of some fragments may have been as large as approximately 2 to 4 kilometers, assuming a geometric albedo of 4 percent, but significantly smaller values (that is,1 kilometer) cannot be ruled out. Most of the fragments (or nuclei) were embedded in circularly symmetric inner comae from July 1993 until late June 1994, implying that there was continuous, but weak, cometary activity. At least a few nuclei fragmented into separate, condensed objects well after the breakup of the SL9 parent body, which argues against the hypothesis that the SL9 fragments were swarms of debris with no dominant, central bodies. Spectroscopic observations taken on 14 July 1994 showed an outburst in magnesium ion emission that was followed closely by a threefold increase in continuum emission, which may have been caused by the electrostatic charging and subsequent explosion of dust as the comet passed from interplanetary space into the jovian magnetosphere. No OH emission was detected, but the derived upper limit on the H2O production rate of approximately 10(27) molecules per second does not necessarily imply that the object was water-poor.

Hubble Space Telescope far-ultraviolet images of Jupiter during the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts show the impact regions darkening over the 2 to 3 hours after the impact, becoming darker and more extended than at longer wavelengths, which indicates that ultraviolet-absorbing gases or aerosols are more extended, more absorbing, and at higher altitudes than the absorbers of visible light. Transient auroral emissions were observed near the magnetic conjugate point of the K impact site just after that impact. The global auroral activity was fainter than average during the impacts, and a variable auroral emission feature was observed inside the southern auroral oval preceding the impacts of fragments Q1 and Q2.

We obtained four images of the asteroid 4179 Toutatis during its close approach to the Earth on 10 December 1992 with the planetary camera of the Hubble Space Telescope. The distance between the Earth and Toutatis at the time of our observations was 0.0291 AU (4.35 × 10 6 km); a single planetary camera pixel width subtends a distance of 926 meters at this distance. The solar phase angle was 91.3°. Analysis of both raw and deconvolved images indicate that Toutatis was marginally resolved by the HST. There is evidence for an extended object with a projected illuminated dimension less than 2.8 km while the best fit symmetric model has a maximum illuminated size of 2.0 km and deconvolutions suggest an irregular object with a maximum dimension of 1.7 km. Our size determination is in good agreement with groundbased infrared radiometric size estimates. Our observations occurred near a local peak in the lightcurve and photometric points extracted from our images show that there were no rapid changes in brightness during the time we observed. The combination of a local peak in the lightcurve and our derived upper limit on the size places some constraints on possible shape models of Toutatis.

Two sets of ultraviolet images of the Jovian north aurora were obtained with the Faint Object Camera on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The first series shows an intense discrete arc in near corotation with the planet. The maximum apparent molecular hydrogen emission rate corresponds to an electron precipitation of approximately 1 watt per square meter, which is about 30,000 times larger than the solar heating by extreme ultraviolet radiation. Such a particle heating rate of the auroral upper atmosphere of Jupiter should cause a large transient temperature increase and generate strong thermospheric winds. Twenty hours after initial observations, the discrete arc had decreased in brightness by more than one order of magnitude. The time scale and magnitude of the change in the ultraviolet aurora leads us to suggest that the discrete Jovian auroral precipitation is related to large-scale variations in the current system as is the case of for Earth's discrete aurorae.

The Hubble Space Telescope observed the fragmented comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 (1993e) (P indicates that it is a periodic comet) on 1 July 1993. Approximately 20 individual nuclei and their comae were observed in images taken with the Planetary Camera. After subtraction of the comae light, the 11 brightest nuclei have magnitudes between approximately 23.7 and 24.8. Assuming that the geometric albedo is 0.04, these magnitudes imply that the nuclear diameters are in the range approximately 2.5 to 4.3 kilometers. If the density of each nucleus is 1 gram per cubic centimeter, the total energy deposited by the impact of these 11 nuclei into Jupiter's atmosphere next July will be approximately 4 x 10(30) ergs ( approximately 10(8) megatons of TNT). This latter number should be regarded as an upper limit because the nuclear magnitudes probably contain a small residual coma contribution. The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to search for fluorescence from OH, which is usually an excellent indicator of cometary activity. No OH emission was detected, and this can be translated into an upper limit on the water production rate of approximately 2 x 10(27) molecules per second.

We have studied the continuum emission in spectra of 18 comets. We find that the gas-to-dust ratio (GDR) increases with increasing activity (as measured by the production of CN). This may be explained by having dust production depend on the gas production raised to the 0.55 ± 0.17 power (1σ error). We interpret this to indicate that cometary gas production in the range of heliocentric distances (and gas production rates) for which we have data, is primarily through a porous mantle. Approximately equal numbers of comets show changes in continuum brightness with distance from the optocenter equal to, or significantly slower than, the canonical (distance)−1 falloff. All continua were red compared to the solar spectrum, with an average reddening of 22% per 1000 A (between 4400 and 5700 A). There is some evidence for a change in the slope of the continuum with distance from the optocenter in some comets. Trends in these observables throughout the apparition of each comet are discussed, and comparisons among comets are made.

The complete Intensified Dissector Scanner data set on 17 comets is presented, and production rates are derived and analyzed. It is shown that there is a strong degree of homogenization in the production rate ratios of many comets. It also appears that the ratio of the production rates of the various species has no heliocentric distance dependence, except for the case of NH2. When speaking of the gas in the coma of a comet, it appears that comets must have been formed under remarkably uniform conditions, and that they must have evolved and formed their comae in a similar manner. The data presented here constitute strong evidence that the minor species must be bound up in a lattice and that the interior of a comet must be reasonably uniform.

Continuum emission has been detected during 3.44-3.64 micron spectral region observations of Comets P/Brorsen-Metcalf, Okazaki-Levy-Rudenko, and Levy. The spatial brightness profile of the 3.52-micron emission feature was measured and found to be consistent with uniform outflow from a central, unresolved source; the molecule generating the emission is either directly sublimated from the cometary surface or is a short-lived parent specie's dissociation product. The modeled IR spectrum of CH3OH implies the consistency of the observed spectra with a methanol origin for the 3.52 emission.

The development of the CO(+) coma of Comet P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 is studied in spectroscopic observations indicating that the maximum rise time of the CO(+) gas is 1.2 days. This result implies a maximum creation time-scale for the CO(+) gas of the order of 100,000 sec at 5.8 AU. Evidence is adduced that dust events and gas events observed in this comet are not necessarily connected.

We describe the on-orbit characterization of the HgCdTe detectors aboard NICMOS. The flat-field response is strongly wavelength dependent, and we show the effect of this on the photometric uncertainties in data, as well as the complications it introduces into calibration of slitless grism observations. We present the first rigorous treatment of the dark current as a function of exposure time for HgCdTe array detectors, and show that they consist of three independent components which we have fully characterized - a constant component which is the true dark current, an 'amplifier glow' component which results from operation of the four readout amplifiers situated near the detector corners and injects a spatially dependent signal each time the detector is non-destructively read out, and finally the 'shading', a component well known in HgCdTe detectors which we show is simply a pixel dependent bias change whose amplitude is a function of the time since the detector was last non-destructively read out. We show that with these three components fully characterized, we are able to generate 'synthetic' dark current images for calibration purposes which accurately predict the actual performance of the three flight detectors. In addition, we present linearity curves produced in ground testing before launch. Finally, we report a number of detector related anomalies which we have observed with NICMOS some of which have limited the observed sensitivity of the instrument, and which at the time of writing are still not fully understood.

Only the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) can detect about 20 of the faint satellites discovered with the two Voyager spacecraft. We describe here the techniques used in obtaining astrometric positions of the inner satellites of Uranus with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) of HST, and those planned for our scheduled observations of the inner Neptunian satellites.

Dactyl was discovered in solid state imaging (SSI) data on February 17, 1994, during the long playback of approach images from the Galileo spacecraft's encounter with the asteroid 243 Ida. Forty-seven images of the Ida–Dactyl pair were obtained. A detailed search for other satellites was made. No confirmed detections were made, all other candidate features being consistent with radiation hits. We deduce a manifold of osculating two-body orbits that approximate Dactyl's motion over the observed orbital arc depending on the assumed mass of Ida. At the time of Galileo's encounter, Dactyl was found to be 85 km from the center of Ida, moving at ∼6 m·sec −1 in the same rection as Ida's retrograde spin. The inclination of its orbit is ∼172° in Ida's equatorial system (IAU definition). It was not possible to obtain a definitive orbit or measure of Ida's mass from the observed motion even though supplemental techniques (search for Dactyl's shadow on Ida, changes in angular diameter and brightness, and attempts to determine the spin of Dactyl) were explored. The influence of Ida's irregular gravitational field and solar perturbations on two-body motion are evaluated and found to be undetectable in the observed orbital arc. These effects may, however, strongly influence the motion over orbital time scales. Limits to the value of Ida's gravitation parameter, GM , are derived. A robust lower limit, GM > 0.0023 km 3 ·sec −2 , is obtained by requiring Dactyl's orbit to be bound. Hubble Space Telescope observations, which show no evidence of Dactyl on a hyperbolic orbit, excludes values of GM in the range 0.00216 GM 3 ·sec −2 . An upper limit, GM 3 ·sec −2 , deduced by requiring that the orbital motion has a long lifetime in a realistic approximation to Ida's gravitational field, is illustrated with numerical calculations. Ida's mass is therefore constrained to the range 4.2 ± 0.6 × 10 19 g, which, together with a volume of 16,100 ± 1900 km 3 (Thomas P. C., M. J. S. Belton, B. Carcich, C. R. Chapman, M. E. Davies, R. Near-infrared spectroscopic observations of the active star-forming region near NGC 7538 IRS 1 and IRS 2 were made. The relative intensities of the v = 1-0 Q(1), Q(3), and Q(5) lines of molecular hydrogen are used to calculate a rotational excitation temperature. Comparison of the measured intensity of the Q(2) transition relative to the intensity of Q(1) and Q(3) permitted the retrieval of the ratio of ortho-to-para hydrogen. It is found that an ortho-to-para ratio of between 1.6 and 2.35 is needed to explain the Q-branch line intensity ratios, depending on the excitation model used. This range in ortho-to-para ratios implies a range of molecular hydrogen formation temperature of approximately 105 K to 140 K.

The population of large asteroids is thought to be primordial and they are the most direct witnesses of the early history of our Solar System. Those satellites allow study of the mass, and hence density and internal structure. We study here the properties of the triple asteroid (107) Camilla from lightcurves, stellar occultations, optical spectroscopy, and high-contrast and high-angular-resolution images and spectro-images. Using 80 positions over 15 years, we determine the orbit of its larger satellite to be circular, equatorial, and prograde, with RMS residuals of 7.8 mas. From 11 positions in three epochs only, in 2015 and 2016, we determine a preliminary orbit for the second satellite. We find the orbit to be somewhat eccentric and slightly inclined to the primary's equatorial plane, reminiscent of the inner satellites of other asteroid triple systems. Comparison of the near-infrared spectrum of the larger satellite reveals no significant difference with Camilla. Hence, these properties argue for a formation of the satellites by excavation from impact and re-accumulation of ejecta. We determine the spin and 3-D shape of Camilla. The model fits well each data set. We determine Camilla to be larger than reported from modeling of mid-infrared photometry, with a spherical-volume-equivalent diameter of 254 $\pm$ 36 km (3 $\sigma$ uncertainty), in agreement with recent results from shape modeling (Hanus2017+). Combining the mass of (1.12 $\pm$ 0.01) $\times$ 10$^{19}$ kg determined from the dynamics of the satellites and the volume from the 3-D shape model, we determine a density of 1,280 $\pm$ 130 SI. From this density, and considering Camilla's spectral similarities with (24) Themis and (65) Cybele (for which water ice coating on surface grains was reported), we infer a silicate-to-ice mass ratio of 1-6, with a 10-30% macroporosity., Comment: 40 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication
