Abstract

This paper reports the first detection of polarization in the X-rays for atoll-source 4U 1820−303, obtained with the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) at 99.999% confidence level (CL). Simultaneous polarimetric measurements were also performed in the radio with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The IXPE observations of 4U 1820−303 were coordinated with Swift X-ray Telescope, Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer, and Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array aiming to obtain an accurate X-ray spectral model covering a broad energy interval. The source shows a significant polarization above 4 keV, with a polarization degree of 2.0% ± 0.5% and a polarization angle of −55° ± 7° in the 4–7 keV energy range, and a polarization degree of 10% ± 2% and a polarization angle of −67° ± 7° in the 7–8 keV energy bin. This polarization also shows a clear energy trend with polarization degree increasing with energy and a hint for a position-angle change of ≃90° at 96% CL around 4 keV. The spectro-polarimetric fit indicates that the accretion disk is polarized orthogonally to the hard spectral component, which is presumably produced in the boundary/spreading layer. We do not detect linear polarization from the radio counterpart, with a 3 σ upper limit of 50% at 7.25 GHz.

2. Disk winds during the faint outburst of an accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar

Abstract

The Neutron Star Low-Mass X-ray Binary Swift J1749.4-2807 is the only known eclipsing Accreting Millisecond X-ray Pulsar. On March 2021, the source underwent a short (11-days) and relatively faint outburst, reaching a X-ray luminosity at the peak of only 2×1036erg s−1. We present the first ever broadband spectral characterization of the system throughout the whole outburst, analyzing 11 NICER observations and XMM-Newton and NuSTAR single observations. This is also one of the very few times that, thanks to NICER, we had the opportunity to follow an X-ray binary outburst in its entirety in the soft X-ray band. According to our analysis, no direct emission from the disc was found (perhaps due to it being too cool), and the the broadband spectrum is well-modelled with a black body component, most likely emitted by a hot spot on the Neutron Star surface, and a Comptonization spectrum arising from a hot electron corona. A moderate truncation radius for the disc, i.e. at ∼20-30 R𝐺, was obtained from the analysis of the smeared profile of the Fe line in the reflection component. The significant detection of a blue-shifted Fe XXVI absorption line at ∼7 keV indicates weakly relativistic disk winds. The discovery of such outflows, typically observed in the soft state of X-ray binaries, is unexpected as the spectral properties of the systems are consistent with a hard-intermediate state. This finding could in principle suggest magnetic propeller-driven winds. In the last few years, a pattern of winds in AMXPs out of the canonical soft states seems to have emerged. However, such detections are typically unconstrained and/or weakly significant, as AMXPs display generally faint outbursts when compared to the other X-ray binaries, due to the state-of-the-art technology. With Athena we will be not only to confirm the existence of such outflows, but to investigate their origin.

Abstract

HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative X-ray detectors, characterized by a large energy band and excellent temporal resolution, and thus optimized for the monitoring of Cosmic High Energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events, and for the determination of their positions. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896. HERMES-TP/SP is an in-orbit demonstration, that should be tested starting from 2022. Abstract

The HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites -- Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is an in-orbit demonstration of the so-called distributed astronomy concept. Conceived as a mini-constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting a new miniaturized detector, HERMES-TP/SP aims at the detection and accurate localisation of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts. The large energy band, the excellent temporal resolution and the wide field of view that characterize the detectors of the constellation represent the key features for the next generation high-energy all-sky monitor with good localisation capabilities that will play a pivotal role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. In this work, we will describe in detail the temporal techniques that allow the localisation of bright transient events taking advantage of their almost simultaneous observation by spatially spaced detectors. Abstract

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Technological and Scientific pathfinder is a space borne mission based on a LEO constellation of nano-satellites. The 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized detectors to probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Fast transient localization, in a field of view of several steradians and with arcmin-level accuracy, is gained by comparing time delays among the same event detection epochs occurred on at least 3 nano-satellites. With a launch date in 2022, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. In this paper we will illustrate the HERMES payload design, highlighting the technical solutions adopted to allow a wide-energy-band and sensitive X-ray and gamma-ray detector to be accommodated in a CubeSat 1U volume together with its complete control electronics and data handling system., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures.
