1. Constraining self-interacting fermionic dark matter in admixed neutron stars using multimessenger astronomy

Abstract

We investigate the structure of admixed neutron stars with a regular hadronic component and a fraction of fermionic self-interacting dark matter. Using two limiting equations of state for the dense baryonic interior, constructed from piecewise generalised polytropes, and an asymmetric self-interacting fermionic dark component, we analyse different scenarios of admixed neutron stars depending on the mass of dark fermions $m_\chi$, interaction mediators $m_\phi$, and self-interacting strengths $g$. We find that the contribution of dark matter to the masses and radii of neutron stars leads to tension with mass estimates of the pulsar J0453+1559, the least massive neutron star, and with the constraints coming from the GW170817 event. We discuss the possibilities of constraining dark matter model parameters $g$ and $y \equiv m_\chi/m_\phi$, using current existing knowledge on neutron star estimations of mass, radius, and tidal deformability, along with the accepted cosmological dark matter freeze-out values and self-interaction cross-section to mass ratio, $\sigma_\mathrm{SI}/m_\chi$, fitted to explain Bullet, Abell, and dwarf galaxy cluster dynamics. By assuming the most restrictive upper limit, $\sigma_\mathrm{SI}/m_\chi < 0.1$ cm$^2$/g, along with dark matter freeze-out range values, the allowed $g$-$y$ region is $0.01 \lesssim g \lesssim 0.1$, with $0.5 \lesssim y \lesssim 200$. Abstract

This report describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of IRIDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity 'particle factory', based on a combination of a high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linac and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. IRIDE will contribute to open new avenues of discoveries and to address most important riddles: What does matter consist of? What is the structure of proteins that have a fundamental role in life processes? What can we learn from protein structure to improve the treatment of diseases and to design more efficient drugs? But also how does an electronic chip behave under the effect of radiations? How can the heat flow in a large heat exchanger be optimized? The scientific potential of IRIDE is far reaching and justifies the construction of such a large facility in Italy in synergy with the national research institutes and companies and in the framework of the European and international research. It will impact also on R&D work for ILC, FEL, and will be complementarity to other large scale accelerator projects. Abstract

Quantitative neutron studies of cultural heritage objects provide access to microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic structures in a nondestructive manner. In this paper we present a neutron diffraction investigation of a Ghiberti Renaissance gilded bronze relief devoted to the measurement of cavities and inhomogeneities in the bulk of the sample, along with the bulk phase composition and residual strain distribution. The quantitative measurements allowed the determination of the re-melting parts extension, as well as improving current knowledge about the manufacturing process. The study provides significant and unique information to conservators and restorators about the history of the relief. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Two independent active faults, capable of generating medium-sized earthquakes in the San Vito lo Capo peninsula, northwestern Sicily (Italy) have been identified as a result of detailed field studies. In western Sicily, instrumental seismicity is low; in fact, except for the 1968 Belice earthquake (Ms = 5.4), historical records indicate that this area is relatively quiescent. Most of the seismicity is in the offshore sector of the Sicilian Maghrebian Chain, which is characterized by several medium- to low-magnitude events. The main shock of the 2002 Palermo seismic sequence (Mw = 5.9) represents the largest earthquake felt in the area in recent years. The deformation pattern characterizing the most recent faults mapped in northwestern Sicily includes a grid of high-angle faults consisting of major east-west-striking right-lateral and north-south-striking left-lateral features. This fault grid is related to a regional transcurrent right-lateral shear zone, here named the UEKA shear zone, bounded to the north by the Ustica-Eolie fault and to the south by the Kumeta-Alcantara fault. The UEKA shear zone accommodates the regional strain induced by the current stress field acting in the area, which, as emerges from both structural and seismological data, is characterized by a NW-SE-striking main compression.

Abstract

This paper describes the scientific aims and potentials as well as the preliminary technical design of RUDE, an innovative tool for multi-disciplinary investigations in a wide field of scientific, technological and industrial applications. IRIDE will be a high intensity "particles factory", based on a combination of high duty cycle radio-frequency superconducting electron linacs and of high energy lasers. Conceived to provide unique research possibilities for particle physics, for condensed matter physics, chemistry and material science, for structural biology and industrial applications, IRIDE will open completely new research possibilities and advance our knowledge in many branches of science and technology. 31. Prognostic Value of 12-Leads Electrocardiogram at Emergency Department in Hospitalized Patients with Coronavirus Disease-19.

Abstract

Background: Electrocardiogram (ECG) offers a valuable resource easily available in the emergency setting. Objective: Aim of the study was to describe ECG alterations on emergency department (ED) presentation or that developed during hospitalization in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients and their association with 28-day mortality. Methods: A retrospective, single-center study including hospitalized patients with SARS-CoV-2 was conducted. ECG was recorded on ED admission to determine: heart rhythm, rate, and cycle; atrio-ventricular and intra-ventricular conduction; right ventricular strain; and ventricular repolarization. A specialized cardiologist blinded for the outcomes performed all 12-lead ECG analyses and their interpretation. Results: 190 patients were included, with a total of 24 deaths (12.6%). Age (p < 0.0001) and comorbidity burden were significantly higher in non-survivors (p < 0.0001). Atrial fibrillation (AF) was more frequent in non-survivors (p < 0.0001), alongside a longer QTc interval (p = 0.0002), a lower Tp-e/QTc ratio (p = 0.0003), and right ventricular strain (p = 0.013). Remdesivir administration was associated with bradycardia development (p = 0.0005) but no increase in mortality rates. In a Cox regression model, AF (aHR 3.02 (95% CI 1.03−8.81); p = 0.042), QTc interval above 451 ms (aHR 3.24 (95% CI 1.09−9.62); p = 0.033), and right ventricular strain (aHR 2.94 (95% CI 1.01−8.55); p = 0.047) were associated with higher 28-day mortality risk. Conclusions: QTc interval > 451 ms, right ventricular strain, and AF are associated with higher mortality risk in SARS-CoV-2 hospitalized patients. ECG recording and its appropriate analysis offers a simple, quick, non-expensive, and validated approach in the emergency setting to guide COVID-19 patients’ stratification.

32. Clinical Characteristics and Outcome of Patients with Suspected COVID-19 in Emergency Department (RESILIENCY Study II).

Abstract

Objectives: COVID-19 may show no peculiar signs and symptoms that may differentiate it from other infective or non-infective etiologies; thus, early recognition and prompt management are crucial to improve survival. The aim of this study was to describe clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics and outcomes of hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared to those with other infective or non-infective etiologies., Methods: We performed a prospective study from March 2020 to February 2021. All patients hospitalized for suspected or confirmed COVID-19 were prospectively recruited. All patients were evaluated according to a predefined protocol for diagnosis of suspected SARS-CoV-2 infection. The primary endpoint was evaluation of clinical, laboratory, and radiological characteristics associated or not with COVID-19 etiology at time of hospitalization in an emergency department., Results: A total of 1036 patients were included in the study: 717 (69%) patients with confirmed COVID-19 and 319 (31%) without COVID-19, hospitalized for other causes. The main causes of hospitalization among non-COVID-19 patients were acute heart failure (44%) and bacterial pneumonia (45.8%). Overall, 30-day mortality was 9% among the COVID-19 group and 35% in the non-COVID-19 group. Multivariate analysis showed variables (fever > 3 days, dry cough, acute dyspnea, lymphocytes < 1000 × 10 3 /µL, and ferritin > 250 ng/mL) independently associated with COVID-19 etiology. A decision tree was elaborated to early detect COVID-19 patients in the emergency department. Finally, Kaplan-Meier curves on 30-day survival in COVID-19 patients during the first wave (March-May 2020, n = 289 patients) and the second wave (October-February 2021, n = 428 patients) showed differences between the two study periods ( p = 0.021)., Conclusions: Patients with confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19 may show peculiar characteristics at time of hospitalization that could help physicians to distinguish from other infective or non-infective etiologies. Finally, a different 30-day mortality rate was observed during different periods of the pandemic.

Abstract

Current guidelines are mandatory in the choice of anticoagulant and/or antiplatelet therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty and in patients with coronary artery disease and previous percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty that develop atrial fibrillation. However, in the real world there are crossroads with multiple choices, especially taking into account patient's peculiar characteristics and risk factors, which sometimes are not well represented in the guidelines. Abstract

Protection of working mothers: operational guide document. The aim of this operational guide document is to protect the health of working mothers and their babies during pregnancy, puerperium and breastfeeding. The project was developed by a technical working group which included professionals in the pertinent fields from the Workplace Prevention and Safety Services of the local Vasta-2 Area of the Marche Regional Health Service:physicians, health assistants, and nurses. It is considered to be a useful tool for risk assessment at the workplace aimed at professionals who are involved, with various duties and responsibilities, in the health care of the working mother. This paper consists of two functionally related sections, "Table of risks" and "Technical specifications". In the "Table of Risks" section, the occupational hazards for women during pregnancy or postpartum were analyzed with the highest possible degree of care. To this end the technical group provided, for each occupational hazard, its own operational suggestions, in relation to legislation, current scientific knowledge and Guidelines of other Italian Regions. The Marche Regional Section of the Italian Society of Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene (SIMLII) participated in the final draft of the entire document. The second section, "Technical Specifications", illustrates the main tasks and any risks involved in the 34 manufacturing sectors most prevalent in this area. This operational guide document is intended to be the beginning of a common strategy in public health to achieve a wider field of action in promotion and information aimed at protecting the reproductive health of working mothers.
