Abstract

Abstract The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will be a transformative experiment for gravitational wave astronomy, and, as such, it will offer unique opportunities to address many key astrophysical questions in a completely novel way. The synergy with ground-based and space-born instruments in the electromagnetic domain, by enabling multi-messenger observations, will add further to the discovery potential of LISA. The next decade is crucial to prepare the astrophysical community for LISA’s first observations. This review outlines the extensive landscape of astrophysical theory, numerical simulations, and astronomical observations that are instrumental for modeling and interpreting the upcoming LISA datastream. To this aim, the current knowledge in three main source classes for LISA is reviewed; ultra-compact stellar-mass binaries, massive black hole binaries, and extreme or interme-diate mass ratio inspirals. The relevant astrophysical processes and the established modeling techniques are summarized. Likewise, open issues and gaps in our understanding of these sources are highlighted, along with an indication of how LISA could help making progress in the different areas. New research avenues that LISA itself, or its joint exploitation with upcoming studies in the electromagnetic domain, will enable, are also illustrated. Improvements in modeling and analysis approaches, such as the combination of numerical simulations and modern data science techniques, are discussed. This review is intended to be a starting point for using LISA as a new discovery tool for understanding our Universe.

Abstract

The James Webb Space Telescope opens a new window to directly probe luminous quasars powered by billion solar mass black holes in the Epoch of Reionization and their coevolution with massive galaxies with unprecedented details. In this paper, we report the first results from a deep NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopic study of a quasar at z = 7.5. We obtain a bolometric luminosity of ∼1.8 × 10 ^47 erg s ^−1 and a black hole mass of ∼0.7–2.5 × 10 ^9 M _⊙ based on the H β emission line in the quasar spectrum. We discover ∼2 kpc scale, highly blueshifted (∼−870 km s ^−1 ) and broad (∼1400 km s ^−1 ) [O iii ] line emission after the quasar point-spread function has been subtracted. Such line emission most likely originates from a fast, quasar-driven outflow, the earliest one at galactic scales known so far. The dynamical properties of this outflow fall within the typical ranges of quasar-driven outflows at lower redshift, and the outflow may be fast enough to reach the circumgalactic medium. Combining both the extended and nuclear outflow together, the mass outflow rate, ∼300 M _⊙ yr ^−1 , is ∼60%–380% of the star formation rate of the quasar host galaxy, suggesting that the outflow may expel a significant amount of gas from the inner region of the galaxy. The kinetic energy outflow rate, ∼3.6 × 10 ^44 erg s ^−1 , is ∼0.2% of the quasar bolometric luminosity, which is comparable to the minimum value required for negative feedback based on simulation predictions. The dynamical timescale of the extended outflow is ∼1.7 Myr, consistent with the typical quasar lifetime in this era.

Abstract

Low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with low-mass black holes (BHs) in the early universe are fundamental to understanding the BH growth and their coevolution with the host galaxies. Utilizing JWST NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy, we perform a systematic search for broad-line H α emitters (BHAEs) at z ≈ 4–5 in 25 fields of the A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE) project, covering a total area of 275 arcmin ^2 . We identify 16 BHAEs with FWHM of the broad components spanning from ∼1000 to 3000 km s ^−1 . Assuming that the broad line widths arise as a result of Doppler broadening around BHs, the implied BH masses range from 10 ^7 to 10 ^8 M _⊙ , with broad H α -converted bolometric luminosities of 10 ^44.5 –10 ^45.5 erg s ^−1 and Eddington ratios of 0.07–0.47. The spatially extended structure of the F200W stacked image may trace the stellar light from the host galaxies. The H α luminosity function indicates an increasing AGN fraction toward the higher H α luminosities. We find possible evidence for clustering of BHAEs: two sources are at the same redshift with a projected separation of 519 kpc; one BHAE appears as a composite system residing in an overdense region with three close companion H α emitters. Three BHAEs exhibit blueshifted absorption troughs indicative of the presence of high column density gas. We find that the broad-line-selected and photometrically selected BHAE samples exhibit different distributions in the optical continuum slopes, which can be attributed to their different selection methods. The ASPIRE broad-line H α sample provides a good database for future studies of faint AGN populations at high redshift.

Abstract

We have performed numerical calculations of a binary interacting with a gas disk, using 11 different numerical methods and a standard binary−disk setup. The goal of this study is to determine whether all codes agree on a numerically converged solution and to determine the necessary resolution for convergence and the number of binary orbits that must be computed to reach an agreed-upon relaxed state of the binary−disk system. We find that all codes can agree on a converged solution (depending on the diagnostic being measured). The zone spacing required for most codes to reach a converged measurement of the torques applied to the binary by the disk is roughly 1% of the binary separation in the vicinity of the binary components. For our disk model to reach a relaxed state, codes must be run for at least 200 binary orbits, corresponding to about a viscous time for our parameters, 0.2( a ^2 Ω _B / ν ) binary orbits, where ν is the kinematic viscosity. The largest discrepancies between codes resulted from the dimensionality of the setup (3D vs. 2D disks). We find good agreement in the total torque on the binary between codes, although the partition of this torque between the gravitational torque, orbital accretion torque, and spin accretion torque depends sensitively on the sink prescriptions employed. In agreement with previous studies, we find a modest difference in torques and accretion variability between 2D and 3D disk models. We find cavity precession rates to be appreciably faster in 3D than in 2D.

Abstract

In this fourth paper from the AGORA Collaboration, we study the evolution down to redshift z = 2 and below of a set of cosmological zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way mass galaxy by eight of the leading hydrodynamic simulation codes. We also compare this CosmoRun suite of simulations with dark matter-only simulations by the same eight codes. We analyze general properties of the halo and galaxy at z = 4 and 3, and before the last major merger, focusing on the formation of well-defined rotationally supported disks, the mass–metallicity relation, the specific star formation rate, the gas metallicity gradients, and the nonaxisymmetric structures in the stellar disks. Codes generally converge well to the stellar-to-halo mass ratios predicted by semianalytic models at z ∼ 2. We see that almost all the hydro codes develop rotationally supported structures at low redshifts. Most agree within 0.5 dex with the observed mass–metallicity relation at high and intermediate redshifts, and reproduce the gas metallicity gradients obtained from analytical models and low-redshift observations. We confirm that the intercode differences in the halo assembly history reported in the first paper of the collaboration also exist in CosmoRun , making the code-to-code comparison more difficult. We show that such differences are mainly due to variations in code-dependent parameters that control the time stepping strategy of the gravity solver. We find that variations in the early stellar feedback can also result in differences in the timing of the low-redshift mergers. All the simulation data down to z = 2 and the auxiliary data will be made publicly available.

Abstract

We analyze and compare the satellite halo populations at z ∼ 2 in the high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations of a 10 ^12 M _⊙ target halo ( z = 0 mass) carried out on eight widely used astrophysical simulation codes ( Art-I , Enzo , Ramses , Changa , Gadget-3 , Gear , Arepo-t , and Gizmo ) for the AGORA High-resolution Galaxy Simulations Comparison Project. We use slightly different redshift epochs near z = 2 for each code (hereafter “ z ∼ 2”) at which the eight simulations are in the same stage in the target halo’s merger history. After identifying the matched pairs of halos between the CosmoRun simulations and the DMO simulations, we discover that each CosmoRun halo tends to be less massive than its DMO counterpart. When we consider only the halos containing stellar particles at z ∼ 2, the number of satellite galaxies is significantly fewer than that of dark matter halos in all participating AGORA simulations and is comparable to the number of present-day satellites near the Milky Way or M31. The so-called “missing satellite problem” is fully resolved across all participating codes simply by implementing the common baryonic physics adopted in AGORA and the stellar feedback prescription commonly used in each code, with sufficient numerical resolution (≲100 proper pc at z = 2). We also compare other properties such as the stellar mass–halo mass relation and the mass–metallicity relation. Our work highlights the value of comparison studies such as AGORA, where outstanding problems in galaxy formation theory are studied simultaneously on multiple numerical platforms.

Abstract

We analyze the circumgalactic medium (CGM) for eight commonly-used cosmological codes in the AGORA collaboration. The codes are calibrated to use identical initial conditions, cosmology, heating and cooling, and star formation thresholds, but each evolves with its own unique code architecture and stellar feedback implementation. Here, we analyze the results of these simulations in terms of the structure, composition, and phase dynamics of the CGM. We show properties such as metal distribution, ionization levels, and kinematics are effective tracers of the effects of the different code feedback and implementation methods, and as such they can be highly divergent between simulations. This is merely a fiducial set of models, against which we will in the future compare multiple feedback recipes for each code. Nevertheless, we find that the large parameter space these simulations establish can help disentangle the different variables that affect observable quantities in the CGM, e.g., showing that abundances for ions with higher ionization energy are more strongly determined by the simulation’s metallicity, while abundances for ions with lower ionization energy are more strongly determined by the gas density and temperature.

Abstract

We present the first results from the JWST program A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE). This program represents an imaging and spectroscopic survey of 25 reionization-era quasars and their environments by utilizing the unprecedented capabilities of NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy (WFSS) mode. ASPIRE will deliver the largest ( $\sim 280\,{\mathrm{arcmin}}^{2}$ ) galaxy redshift survey at 3–4 μ m among JWST Cycle 1 programs and provide extensive legacy values for studying the formation of the earliest supermassive black holes, the assembly of galaxies, early metal enrichment, and cosmic reionization. In this first ASPIRE paper, we report the discovery of a filamentary structure traced by the luminous quasar J0305–3150 and 10 [O iii ] emitters at z = 6.6. This structure has a 3D galaxy overdensity of δ _gal = 12.6 over 637 cMpc ^3 , one of the most overdense structures known in the early universe, and could eventually evolve into a massive galaxy cluster. Together with existing VLT/MUSE and ALMA observations of this field, our JWST observations reveal that J0305–3150 traces a complex environment where both UV-bright and dusty galaxies are present and indicate that the early evolution of galaxies around the quasar is not simultaneous. In addition, we discovered 31 [O iii ] emitters in this field at other redshifts, 5.3 < z < 6.7, with half of them situated at z ∼ 5.4 and 6.2. This indicates that star-forming galaxies, such as [O iii ] emitters, are generally clustered at high redshifts. These discoveries demonstrate the unparalleled redshift survey capabilities of NIRCam WFSS and the potential of the full ASPIRE survey data set.

Abstract

Studies of rest-frame optical emission in quasars at z > 6 have historically been limited by the wavelengths accessible by ground-based telescopes. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) now offers the opportunity to probe this emission deep into the reionization epoch. We report the observations of eight quasars at z > 6.5 using the JWST/NIRCam Wide Field Slitless Spectroscopy as a part of the “A SPectroscopic survey of biased halos In the Reionization Era (ASPIRE)” program. Our JWST spectra cover the quasars’ emission between rest frame ∼4100 and 5100 Å. The profiles of these quasars’ broad H β emission lines span a full width at half maximum from 3000 to 6000 km s ^−1 . The H β -based virial black hole (BH) masses, ranging from 0.6 to 2.1 billion solar masses, are generally consistent with their Mg ii -based BH masses. The new measurements based on the more reliable H β tracer thus confirm the existence of a billion solar-mass BHs in the reionization epoch. In the observed [O iii ] λ λ 4960,5008 doublets of these luminous quasars, broad components are more common than narrow core components (≤ 1200 km s ^−1 ), and only one quasar shows stronger narrow components than broad. Two quasars exhibit significantly broad and blueshifted [O iii ] emission, thought to trace galactic-scale outflows, with median velocities of −610 and −1430 km s ^−1 relative to the [C ii ] 158 μ m line. All eight quasars show strong optical Fe ii emission and follow the eigenvector 1 relations defined by low-redshift quasars. The entire ASPIRE program will eventually cover 25 quasars and provide a statistical sample for the studies of the BHs and quasar spectral properties.

Abstract

ObjectivesThe UEFA 2020 European Football Championship held in multiple cities across Europe from June 11 to July 11, 2021, was won by Italy, providing an opportunity to examine the relationship between emotional stress and the incidence of acute cardiovascular events (ACE).Methods and resultsCardiovascular hospitalizations in the Cardiac Care Units of 49 hospital networks in Italy were assessed by emergency physicians during the UEFA Euro 2020 Football Championship. We compared the events that occurred during matches involving Italy with events that occurred during the remaining days of the championship as the control period. ACE was assessed in 1,235 patients. ACE during the UEFA Euro 2020 Football Championship semifinal and final, the most stressful matches ended with penalties and victory of the Italian team, were assessed. A significant increase in the incidence of Takotsubo Syndrome (TTS) by a factor of 11.41 (1.6–495.1, P < 0.003), as compared with the control period, was demonstrated during the semifinal and final, whereas no differences were found in the incidence of ACS [IRR 0.93(0.74–1.18), P = 0.57]. No differences in the incidence of ACS [IRR 0.98 (0.87–1.11; P = 0.80)] or TTS [IRR 1.66(0.80–3.4), P = 0.14] were found in the entire period including all matches of the UEFA Euro 2020 compared to the control period.ConclusionsThe data of this national registry demonstrated an association between the semifinal and final of UEFA Euro 2020 and TTS suggesting that it can be triggered by also positive emotions such as the victory in the European Football Championship finals.

Abstract

Experience with angiotensin-receptor neprilysin inhibitors (ARNI) in oncologic patients with heart failure (HF) is limited. We report a case of ARNI started as first-choice therapy in a patient with relapsing hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) and HF with depressed left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). A middle-aged male, previously treated with rituximab for HCL, was scheduled for cardiologic screening before starting a new antineoplastic therapy for cancer relapse. The patient had symptomatic HF with reduced LVEF and high NT-proBNP levels. In this patient, early ARNI treatment was well tolerated and produced a rapid and durable improvement of symptoms, LVEF and NT-proBNP levels. Consequently, the oncologic team could start an experimental treatment with obinutuzumab, with complete HCL remission. In conclusion, in this patient with HCL and HF, ARNI therapy was safe and effective, contributing to undelayed cancer treatment.

Abstract

This Italian real-world data analysis evaluated the pharmaco-utilization of calcimimetics, cinacalcet or etelcalcetide, and the economic burden of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. From 1 January 2010 to 30 June 2020, adult patients with: (i) ≥1 prescription of etelcalcetide or cinacalcet, (ii) ≥3 hemodialysis/week, and (iii) without parathyroidectomy, were included. Based on the drug firstly prescribed, patients were allocated into etelcalcetide- and cinacalcet-treated cohorts, and the propensity score matching (PSM) methodology was applied to abate potential cohorts’ unbalances. Overall, 1752 cinacalcet- and 527 etelcalcetide-treated patients were enrolled. In cinacalcet- and etelcalcetide-treated patients, respectively, the most frequent comorbidities were hypertension (75.3% and 74.4%), diabetes mellitus (21.0% and 21.3%), and cardiovascular disease (18.1% and 13.3%, p < 0.01). In covariate-balanced cohorts, the treatment adherence and persistence rates were significantly higher in the etelcalcetide-treated (80.1% and 62.7%, respectively) vs. cinacalcet-treated cohort (62.3% and 54.7%, respectively). After PSM, the total costs for the management of cinacalcet- and etelcalcetide-treated patients, respectively, averaged EUR 23,480 and EUR 22,958, with the disease-specific drug costs (EUR 2629 vs. EUR 2355, p < 0.05) and disease-specific hospitalization costs (EUR 1241 vs. EUR 855) in cinacalcet- and etelcalcetide-treated patients. These results showed that, in etelcalcetide-treated patients, a higher treatment adherence and persistence was found, with disease-specific costs savings, especially those related to drugs and hospitalizations.

Abstract

Background Evidence suggests that LPA risk genotypes are a possible contributor to the clinical diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolemia (FH). This study aimed at determining the prevalence of LPA risk variants in adult individuals with FH enrolled in the Italian LIPIGEN (Lipid Transport Disorders Italian Genetic Network) study, with (FH/M+) or without (FH/M-) a causative genetic variant. Methods and Results An lp(a) [lipoprotein(a)] genetic score was calculated by summing the number risk-increasing alleles inherited at rs3798220 and rs10455872 variants. Overall, in the 4.6% of 1695 patients with clinically diagnosed FH, the phenotype was not explained by a monogenic or polygenic cause but by genotype associated with high lp(a) levels. Among 765 subjects with FH/M- and 930 subjects with FH/M+, 133 (17.4%) and 95 (10.2%) were characterized by 1 copy of either rs10455872 or rs3798220 or 2 copies of either rs10455872 or rs3798220 (lp(a) score ≥1). Subjects with FH/M- also had lower mean levels of pretreatment low-density lipoprotein cholesterol than individuals with FH/M+ (t test for difference in means between FH/M- and FH/M+ groups

Abstract

The observation of a population of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) is key for our complete understanding of galaxy mergers and for the characterization of the expected gravitational waves (GWs) signal. However, MBHBs still remain elusive with only a few candidates proposed to date. Among these, SDSSJ143016.05 + 230344.4 (’tick-tock’ hereafter) is the only candidate with a remarkably well sampled light curve showing a clear reduction of the modulation period and amplitude over three years of observations. This particular feature has been recently claimed to be the signature of a MBHB that is about to merge. In this paper, we provide an optical follow-up of the tick-tock source using the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope. The decreasing luminosity observed in our follow up is hardly explained within the binary scenario. We speculate about an alternative scenario that might explain the observed light curve through relativistic Lense-Thirring precession of an accretion disc around a single massive black hole.

Adult patients with statins prescription between January 2014 and December 2016 were screened, and first prescription within this period was the index date. Follow-up lasted 1 year after index date. Only patients receiving statins prior index date (experienced statin users) were included and distributed in clusters based on their CV profile. Adherence was calculated during follow-up as proportion of days covered (PDC) and classified in low adherence (PDC< 40%), partial adherence (PDC=40– 79%) and adherence (PDC≥ 80%). Mean direct healthcare costs of drugs, hospitalizations, and outpatient services were evaluated during follow-up.Results: A total of 436,623 experienced statin users were included and distributed as follows: 5.5% in the previous CV events, 22.6% in diabetes, 55.7% in CV treatments and 16.2% in the no comorbidity cluster. Total mean annual cost/patient decreased from low adherent to adherent patients from € 4826 to € 3497 in previous CV events, from € 2815 to € 2360 in diabetes cluster, from € 2077 to € 1863 for patients with CV treatments. Same trend was reported for the cost item related to hospitalizations, which was the major determinant of the total costs. In previous CV event cluster, adherence was associated to a saving of € 879 on total costs.Conclusion: The study highlighted a decrease in overall mean costs as adherence levels increase, particularly for patients with previous CV events, showing how improving adherence could be associated to cost savings and suggesting suited strategy based on CV profile should be undertaken for adherence optimization.Keywords: direct costs, lipid-lowering drugs, medication adherence, real-life

Abstract

Abstract Methods This study assessed data from two cohorts of patients with alpha‐synucleinopathies (University of Brescia and University of Rome Tor‐Vergata cohorts). Consecutive participants with video‐polysomnography‐confirmed iRBD, Parkinson's disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and controls underwent neurological, clinical and 123I‐FP‐CIT SPECT imaging assessments. Individuals with iRBD were longitudinally monitored to collect clinical phenoconversion to PD or DLB. The main outcome was to identify whole brain 123 I‐FP‐CIT SPECT measures reflecting monoaminergic deficits in each clinical group as compared to controls. Results The cohort (n = 184) included 45 patients with iRBD, 47 PD, 42 DLB and 50 age‐matched controls. Individuals with iRBD were categorized as RBD‐DAT− (n = 32) and RBD‐DAT+ (n = 13), according to nigrostriatal assessment used in clinical practice. Compared to controls, RBD‐DAT− showed an early involvement of the left insula, which increased in RBD‐DAT+, and was present in patients with Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. Longitudinal cox regression analyses revealed a higher risk of phenoconversion in individuals with iRBD and insular monoaminergic deficits [HR = 3.387; CI 95%: 1.18–10.27]. Interpretation In this study, altered insular monoaminergic binding in iRBD was associated with phenoconversion to DLB or PD. These findings may provide a helpful stratification approach for future pharmacological or non‐pharmacological interventions.

Abstract

The shrinking of a binary orbit driven by the interaction with a gaseous circumbinary disc, initially advocated as a potential way to catalyze the binary merger, has been recently debated in the case of geometrically thick (i.e. with $H/R\gtrsim 0.1$) discs. However, a clear consensus is still missing mainly owing to numerical limitations, such as fixed orbit binaries or lack of resolution inside the cavity carved by the binary in its circumbinary disc. In this work, we asses the importance of evolving the binary orbit by means of hydrodynamic simulations performed with the code {\sc gizmo} in meshless-finite-mass mode. In order to model the interaction between equal mass circular binaries and their locally isothermal circumbinary discs, we enforce hyper-Lagrangian resolution inside the cavity. We find that fixing the binary orbit ultimately leads to an overestimate of the gravitational torque that the gas exerts on the binary, and in an underestimate of the torque due to the accretion of material onto the binary components. Furthermore, we find that the modulation of the accretion rate on the binary orbital period is strongly suppressed in the fixed orbit simulation, while it is clearly present in the live binary simulations. Introduction Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is one of the possible manifestation of ischaemic heart disease with signs and symptoms of myocardial ischaemia, but no obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). CMD is defined by an impaired coronary flow reserve owing to functional and/or structural abnormalities of the microcirculation and it is associated with adverse cardiovascular prognosis. Women are known to be more likely than men to have angina in the absence of obstructive CAD and CMD has been proposed as one of the major reasons for this presentation. However, also in men, CMD should be recognized, in order to give the best treatment to relieve symptoms and improve patient prognosis. Index of microvascular resistance (IMR) and coronary flow reserve (CFR) are needed to diagnose CMD and are now easily obtained with pressure wires measurement. Methods Since the adoption in our Cath Lab of the PressureWire™ X Guidewire with the Coroventis CoroFlow Cardiovascular System (Abbott) we started to study IMR and CFR in patients with no obstructive CAD and typical angina. No acute coronary syndromes have been studied in our Cath Lab so far. In this brief study we report a descriptive analysis of the first patients studied and of the first period of follow-up, focusing on men. Results From January 2022 (date when we received the new software) to April 2022 we studied 24 patients and 8 (33%) were men. Among men, mean age was 58±5 yo and two have been already treated with PCI during the previous 6 months. Mean ejection fraction was 57±2% and mean GFR was 76±20 ml/min/mq. 7 out of 8 patients were affected by dyslipidemia, 5 were smoker, 50% were affected by arterial hypertension and only 1 by diabetes. Mean RFR and FFR in left anterior descending artery were 0.92±0.02 and 0.92±0.03, respectively. In 6/8 (75%) patients IMR derived was >25 and, among them 4 (66%) had CFR Conclusions Even if historically considered a women's disease, we should remember that CMD also affects men. New widespread technologies should be used systematically to rule out CMD and to define patients’ symptoms mechanisms. This would lead to targeted therapy that could improve patient's lives.

Abstract

Anaemia is a uraemia-related complication frequently found in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease (ND-CKD) patients, with iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) as the main underlying mechanism. Given the suboptimal anaemia management in ND-CKD patients with a co-diagnosis of IDA, this study evaluated the role of IDA therapy on clinical outcomes and healthcare resource consumptions in an Italian clinical setting. A retrospective observational real-world analysis was performed on administrative databases of healthcare entities, covering around 6.9 million health-assisted individuals. From January 2010 to March 2019, ND-CKD patients were included and diagnosed with IDA in the presence of two low-haemoglobin (Hb) measurements. Patients were divided into IDA-treated and untreated, based on the prescription of iron [Anatomical-Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) code B03A] or anti-anaemia preparations (ATC code B03X), and evaluated during a 6-month follow-up from the index date [first low haemoglobin (Hb) detection]. IDA treatment resulted in significantly decreased incidence of all cause-related, cardiovascular-related, and IDA-related hospitalizations (treated vs. untreated: 44.5% vs. 81.8%, 12.3% vs. 25.3%, and 16.2% vs. 26.2%, respectively, p < 0.001). A healthcare direct cost estimation showed that overall mean expenditure per patient reduced by 47% with IDA treatment (5245€ vs. 9918€, p < 0.001), mainly attributable to hospitalizations (3767€ vs. 8486€, p < 0.001). This real-life analysis on Italian ND-CKD-IDA patients indicates that IDA therapy administration provides significant benefits in terms of patients’ clinical outcomes and healthcare cost savings.

Abstract

The observation of a population of massive black hole binaries (MBHBs) is key for our complete understanding of galaxy mergers and for the characterization of the expected gravitational waves (GWs) signal. However, MBHBs still remain elusive with only a few candidates proposed to date. Among these, SDSSJ143016.05+230344.4 ('tick-tock' hereafter) is the only candidate with a remarkably well sampled light curve showing a clear reduction of the modulation period and amplitude over three years of observations. This particular feature has been recently claimed to be the signature of a MBHB that is about to merge. In this paper, we provide an optical follow-up of the tick-tock source using the Rapid Eye Mount (REM) telescope. The decreasing luminosity observed in our follow up is hardly explained within the binary scenario. Abstract

Dissecting the underlying structure of galaxies is of main importance in the framework of galaxy formation and evolution theories. While a classical bulge+disc decomposition of disc galaxies is usually taken as granted, this is only rarely solidly founded upon the full exploitation of the richness of data arising from spectroscopic studies with integral field units. In this work we describe a fully Bayesian estimation method of the global structure of disc galaxies which makes use of the wealth of photometric, kinematic, and mass-to-light ratio data, and that can be seen as a first step towards a machine-learning approach, certainly needed when dealing with larger samples of galaxies. Ours is a novel, hybrid line of action in tackling the problem of galactic parameter estimation, neither purely photometric nor orbit-based. Being rooted on a nested sampler, our code, which is available publicly as an online repository, allows for a statistical assessment of the need for multiple components in the dissecting process. As a first case-study the GPU-optimized code is applied to the S0 galaxy NGC-7683, finding that in this galaxy a pseudo-bulge, possibly the remnant of a bar-like structure, does exist in the center of the system. 26. Primary Intraocular Lymphoma: The Masquerade Syndrome

Abstract

This chapter aims to provide a complete knowledge over the primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL) and a correct clinical approach towards this rare condition, to avoid delays in diagnosis, which is considered the most important prognostic factor. A PIOL arises with no specific symptoms and could mimic both inflammatory and non-inflammatory ocular conditions. Also known as reticulum cell sarcoma in the past, PIOL is an ocular malignant condition, with a strong bond with primary central system lymphoma (PCNSL). This linkage is underlined by the fact that approximately 30% of the patients with PIOL have also PCNSL at presentation, while 45–90% will develop PCSNL in the following months. A correct diagnosis is currently achieved by the means of many different techniques: cytology, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular analysis, and cytokines assay. Treatment of this condition has been completely revolutionized with the introduction of monoclonal antibodies directed against specific proteins present on the surface of lymphomatous cells.

Abstract

Quasars powered by supermassive black holes (MBH, $>10^8~M_{\odot}$) at $z\sim 6$ are predicted to reside in cosmic over-dense regions. However, observations so far could not confirm this expectation due to limited statistics. The picture is further complicated by the possible effects of quasar outflows (i.e. feedback) that could either suppress or stimulate the star formation rate (SFR) of companion galaxies, thus modifying the expected bias. Here we quantify feedback effects on the properties and detectability of companions by comparing cosmological zoom-in simulations of a quasar in which feedback is either included or turned-off. With respect to the no-feedback case, companions (a) directly impacted by the outflow have their SFR increased by a factor $2-3$, and (b) tend to be more massive. Both effects shift the [CII]158$\mu$m and UV luminosity functions toward brighter magnitudes. This leads us to conclude that quasar feedback slightly increases the effective quasar bias, boosting the number density of observable quasar companions, in agreement with what has been found around the brightest quasars of recent ALMA [CII] surveys. Abstract

We make use of z = 0 samples of strongly barred and unbarred disc galaxies from the TNG100 and TNG50 cosmological hydrodynamical simulations to assess the performance of the simple disc instability criterion proposed by Efstathiou, Lake & Negroponte ( 1982 ) (ELN-criterion). We find that strongly barred galaxies generally assemble earlier, are more star dominated in their central regions, and have more massive and more compact discs than unbarred galaxies. The ELN-criterion successfully identifies ∼75 and ∼80 per cent of the strongly barred and the unbarred galaxies, respectively. Strongly barred galaxies that the criterion fails to identify tend to have more extended discs, higher spin values and bars that assembled later than is typical for the bulk of the barred population. The bars in many of these cases appear to be produced by an interaction with a close neighbour (i.e. to be externally triggered) rather than to result from secular growth in the disc. On the other hand, we find that unbarred galaxies misclassified as barred by the ELN-criterion typically have stellar discs similar to those of barred galaxies, although more extended in the vertical direction and less star-dominated in their central regions, possibly reflecting later formation times. In addition, the bulge component of these galaxies is significantly more prominent at early times than in the strongly barred sample. Thus, the ELN-criterion robustly identifies secular bar instabilities in most simulated disc galaxies, but additional environmental criteria are needed to account for interaction-induced bar formation.

Abstract

We present and validate a novel semi-analytical approach to study the effect of dynamical friction on the orbits of massive perturbers in rotating stellar discs. We find that dynamical friction efficiently circularises the orbit of co-rotating perturbers, while it constantly increases the eccentricity of counter-rotating ones until their angular momenta reverse, then once again promoting circularisation. Abstract

While massive black holes (MBHs) are known to inhabit all massive galaxies, their ubiquitous presence in dwarf galaxies has not been confirmed yet, with only a limited number of sources detected so far. Recently, some studies proposed infrared emission as an alternative way to identify MBHs in dwarfs, based on a similar approach usually applied to quasars. In this study, by accurately combining optical and infrared data taking into account resolution effects and source overlapping, we investigate in detail the possible limitations of this approach with current ground-based facilities, finding a quite low ($\sim$0.4 per cent) fraction of active MBH in dwarfs that are luminous in mid-infrared, consistent with several previous results. Our results suggest that the infrared selection is strongly affected by several limitations that make the identification of MBHs in dwarf galaxies currently prohibitive, especially because of the very poor resolution compared to optical surveys, and the likely contamination by nearby sources, although we find a few good candidates worth further follow-ups. Abstract

Background: Treatment of long coronary stenoses (LCS) with long tapered drug-eluting stents (LT-DES) would offer clinical and economic benefits. However, the feasibility of an interventional strategy based upon the systematic LCS treatment with an LT-DES has not been evaluated so far. Methods: We performed a multicenter prospective study including consecutive patients with: 1) An LCS > 25 mm at coronary angiography; 2) An attempt to fix the LCS with a single BioMime Morph ™ stent, a novel LT-DES available from 30 to 60 mm long. The primary efficacy endpoint was procedural success. The secondary safety endpoints were post-procedural TIMI3 flow, stent detachment during delivery, acute stent thrombosis and in-hospital mortality. Results: From February 2017 to March 2018, we recorded 272 patients with an LCS and an attempt to deploy an LT-DES during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (69.3 ± 11.4 years, 75.7% males, 25.7% diabetic and 43.8% with acute coronary syndromes, mean LCS length 48.8 ± 9.5 mm). LT-DES deployment was successful in 262 patients (96.3%), and failure occurred without stent detachment or other complications. Final TIMI3 flow was present in 270 (99.3%) patients. In-hospital death occurred in five patients (1.8%), with no case of acute stent thrombosis, recurrent myocardial infarction or repeated revascularization. Conclusion: In this real-world study, a strategy of fixing LCS with a single LT-DES was feasible and safe, with a high rate of procedural success and a low rate of in-hospital complications. Based on LDL-C index values, patient was defined with LDL-C “controlled” if its levels were ≤ 70mg/dl (CVD), ≤ 100mg/dl (diabetes, FH), ≤ 130mg/dl (mixed-dyslipidemia, primary-prevention).Results: Overall 164,161 nFH patients were included (mean age 72 years, 51% male); of these, 46,782 (28.5%) were CVD (mean age 74 years, 66% male), 34,803 (21.2%) were diabetic (mean age 72 years, 51% male), 1617 (1%) were with mixed-dyslipidemia (mean age 71 years, 48% male) and 80,959 (49.3%) were in primary-prevention (mean age 71 years, 42% male). The proportion of nFH patients with controlled LDL-C was 41.2% for CVD, 73.6% for diabetic, 80.7% for mixed-dyslipidemia, and 79.5% for primary-prevention patients; 49% of nFH patients were adherent to therapy. Overall, 1287 FH patients (mean age 64 years, 42% male) were included; in 39.2% of the patients, LDL-C was controlled, and 44% of the patients were adherent to therapy.Conclusion: The results of this study highlighted non-optimal therapeutic management of hypercholesterolemic patients in Italian clinical practice, with a notable quote of patients non-adherent to therapy.Keywords: lipid-lowering agents, pharmacoutilization, real-world evidence, clinical practice

Abstract

The study of the interaction of a massive black hole binary with its gaseous environment is crucial in order to be able to predict merger rates and possible electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave signals. The evolution of the binary semi-major axis resulting from this interaction has been recently debated, and a clear consensus is still missing, also because of several numerical limitations, i.e. fixed orbit binaries or lack of resolution inside the cavity carved by the binary in its circumbinary disc. Using on-the-fly particle-splitting in the 3D meshless code gizmo, we achieve hyper-Lagrangian resolution, which allows us to properly resolve the dynamics inside the cavity, and in particular for the first time the discs that form around the two components of a live binary surrounded by a locally isothermal gaseous circumbinary disc. We show that the binary orbit decays with time for very cold and very warm discs and that the result of the interaction in the intermediate regime is strongly in uenced by the disc viscosity as this essentially regulates the fraction of mass contained in the discs around the binary components as well as the fraction that is accreted by the binary. Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves has opened a new era for astronomy, allowing for the combined use of gravitational wave and electromagnetic emissions to directly probe the physics of compact objects, still poorly understood. So far, the theoretical modelling of these sources has mainly relied on standard numerical techniques as grid-based methods or smoothed particle hydrodynamics, with only a few recent attempts at using new techniques as moving-mesh schemes. Here, we introduce a general relativistic extension to the mesh-less hydrodynamic schemes in the code GIZMO, which benefits from the use of Riemann solvers and at the same time perfectly conserves angular momentum thanks to a generalised leap-frog integration scheme. We benchmark our implementation against many standard tests for relativistic hydrodynamics, either in one or three dimensions, and also test the ability to preserve the equilibrium solution of a Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff compact star. Abstract

We use the magnetic-hydrodynamical simulation TNG50 to study the evolution of barred massive disc galaxies. Massive spiral galaxies are already present as early as $z=4$, and bar formation takes place already at those early times. The bars grow longer and stronger as the host galaxies evolve, with the bar sizes increasing at a pace similar to that of the disc scale lengths. The bar fraction mildly evolves with redshift for galaxies with $M_{*}\geq10^{10}M\odot$, being greater than $\sim40\%$ at $0.5, Comment: 19 pages and 16 figures. Abstract

We present MORDOR (MORphological DecOmposeR, a new algorithm for structural decomposition of simulated galaxies based on stellar kinematics. The code measures the properties of up to five structural components (a thin/cold and a thick/warm disc, a classical and a secular bulge, and a spherical stellar halo), and determines the properties of a stellar bar (if present). A comparison with other algorithms presented in the literature yields overall good agreement, with MORDOR displaying a higher flexibility in correctly decomposing systems and identifying bars in crowded environments (e.g. with ongoing fly-bys, often observable in cosmological simulations). We use MORDOR to analyse galaxies in the TNG50 simulation and find the following: ($i$) the thick disc component undergoes the strongest evolution in the binding energy-circularity plane, as expected when disc galaxies decrease their turbulent-rotational support with cosmic time; ($ii$) smaller galaxies (with stellar mass, $10^{9} \lesssim M_{*} / {\rm M_{\odot}} \leq 5 \times 10^{9}$) undergo a major growth in their disc components after $z\sim 1$, whereas ($iii$) the most massive galaxies ($5 \times 10^{10} < M_{*} / {\rm M_{\odot}} \leq 5\times10^{11}$) evolve toward more spheroidal dominated objects down to $z=0$ due to frequent gravitational interactions with satellites; ($iv$) the fraction of barred galaxies grows rapidly at high redshift and stabilizes below $z\sim 2$, except for the most massive galaxies that show a decrease in the bar occupation fraction at low redshift; ($v$) galaxies with $M_{*} \sim 10^{11}~{\rm M_{\odot}}$ exhibit the highest relative occurrence of bars at $z=0$, in agreement with observational studies. Abstract

We propose a space-based interferometer surveying the gravitational wave (GW) sky in the milli-Hz to $\mu$-Hz frequency range. By the 2040s', the $\mu$-Hz frequency band, bracketed in between the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and pulsar timing arrays, will constitute the largest gap in the coverage of the astrophysically relevant GW spectrum. Yet many outstanding questions related to astrophysics and cosmology are best answered by GW observations in this band. We show that a $\mu$-Hz GW detector will be a truly overarching observatory for the scientific community at large, greatly extending the potential of LISA. Abstract

Bleedings are an independent risk factor for subsequent mortality in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and in those undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention. This represents a hazard equivalent to or greater than that for recurrent ACS. Dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) represents the cornerstone in the secondary prevention of thrombotic events, but the benefit of such therapy is counteracted by the increased hemorrhagic complications. Therefore, an early and individualized patient risk stratification can help to identify high-risk patients who could benefit the most from intensive medical therapies while minimizing unnecessary treatment complications in low-risk patients.To review existing literature and gain better understanding of the role of ischemic and hemorrhagic risk scores in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD).We used a combination of terms potentially used in literature describing the most common ischemic and hemorrhagic risk scores to search in PubMed as well as references of full-length articles.In this review we briefly describe the most important ischemic and bleeding scores that can be adopted in patients with IHD, focusing on GRACE, CHA2DS2-Vasc, PARIS CTE, DAPT, CRUSADE, ACUITY, HAS-BLED, PARIS MB and PRECISE-DAPT score. In the second part of this review, we try to define a possible approach to the IHD patient, using the most suitable scores to stratify patient risk and decide the most appropriate patient treatment.It becomes evident that risk scores by themselves can't be the solution to balance the ischemic/bleeding risk of an IHD patient. Instead, some risk factors that are commonly associated with an elevated risk profile and that are already included in risk scores should be the focus of the clinician while he/she is taking care of a patient affected by IHD.

Abstract

Experience with angiotensin-receptor neprilysin inhibitors (ARNI) in oncologic patients with heart failure (HF) is limited. We report a case of ARNI started as first-choice therapy in a patient with relapsing hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) and HF with depressed left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). A middle-aged male, previously treated with rituximab for HCL, was scheduled for cardiologic screening before starting a new antineoplastic therapy for cancer relapse. The patient had symptomatic HF with reduced LVEF and high NT-proBNP levels. In this patient, early ARNI treatment was well tolerated and produced a rapid and durable improvement of symptoms, LVEF and NT-proBNP levels. Consequently, the oncologic team could start an experimental treatment with obinutuzumab, with complete HCL remission. In conclusion, in this patient with HCL and HF, ARNI therapy was safe and effective, contributing to undelayed cancer treatment.

Abstract

Galaxies are self-gravitating structures composed by several components encompassing spherical, axial and triaxial symmetry. Although real systems feature heterogeneous components whose properties are intimately connected, semi-analytical approaches often exploit the linearity of the Poisson's equation to represent the potential and mass distribution of a multi-component galaxy as the sum of the individual components. In this work, we expand the semi-analytical framework developed in Bonetti et al. (2020) by including both a detailed implementation of the gravitational potential of exponential disc (modelled with a ${\rm sech}^2$ and an exponential vertical profile) and an accurate prescription for the dynamical friction experienced by massive perturbers in composite galaxy models featuring rotating disc structures. Such improvements allow us to evolve arbitrary orbits either within or outside the galactic disc plane. We validate the results obtained by our numerical model against public semi-analytical codes as well as full N-body simulations, finding that our model is in excellent agreement to the codes it is compared with. The ability to reproduce the relevant physical processes responsible for the evolution of massive perturber orbits and its computational efficiency make our framework perfectly suited for large parameter-space exploration studies., 17 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

We report on ALMA observations of D1, a system at z~6.15 with stellar mass M_* ~ 10^7 M_sun containing globular cluster (GC) precursors, strongly magnified by the galaxy cluster MACS J0416.1-2403. Since the discovery of GC progenitors at high redshift, ours is the first attempt to probe directly the physical properties of their neutral gas through infrared observations. A careful analysis of our dataset, performed with a suitable procedure designed to identify faint narrow lines and which can test various possible values for the unknown linewidth value, allowed us to identify a 4-sigma tentative detection of [CII] emission with intrinsic luminosity L_CII=(2.9 +/- 1.4) 10^6 L_sun, one of the lowest values ever detected at high redshift. This study offers a first insight on previously uncharted regions of the L_CII-SFR relation. Despite large uncertainties affecting our measure of the star formation rate, if taken at face value our estimate lies more than 1 dex below the values observed in local and high redshift systems. Our weak detection indicates a deficiency of [CII] emission, possibly ascribed to various explanations, such as a low-density gas and/or a strong radiation field caused by intense stellar feedback, and a low metal content. From the non-detection in the continuum we derive constraints on the dust mass, with 3-sigma upper limit values as low as a few 10^4 M_sun, consistent with the values measured in local metal-poor galaxies., MNRAS, accepted. 15 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

A common approach to model complex chemistry in numerical simulations is via post-processing of existing magneto-hydrodynamic simulations, relying on computing the evolution of chemistry over the dynamic history of a subset of particles from within the raw simulation. Here, we validate such a technique, assessing its ability to recover the abundances of chemical species, using the chemistry package KROME. We also assess, for the first time, the importance of the main free input parameters, by means of a direct comparison with a self-consistent state-of-the-art simulation in which chemistry was directly coupled to hydrodynamics. We have found that the post-processing is highly reliable, with an accuracy at the percent level, even when the most relaxed input parameters are employed. In particular, our results show that the number of particles used does not affect significantly the average properties, although it suppresses the appearance of possibly important spatial features. On the other hand, the choice of the integration time-step plays a crucial role. Longer integration time-steps can produce large errors, as the post-processing solution will be forced towards chemical equilibrium, a condition that does not always necessarily apply. When the interpolation-based reconstruction of chemical properties is performed, the errors further increase up to a factor of $\sim2$. Concluding, our results suggest that this technique is extremely useful when exploring the relative quantitative effect of different chemical parameters and/or networks, without the need of re-running simulations multiple times, but some care should be taken in the choice of particles sub-sample and integration time-step., 11 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

The formation of stars and planetary systems is a complex phenomenon that relies on the interplay of multiple physical processes. Nonetheless, it represents a crucial stage for our understanding of the Universe, and in particular of the conditions leading to the formation of key molecules (e.g. water) on comets and planets. Herschel observations demonstrated that stars form in gaseous filamentary structures in which the main constituent is molecular hydrogen (H2). Depending on its nuclear spin H2 can be found in two forms: ‘ortho’ with parallel spins and ‘para’ where the spins are anti-parallel. The relative ratio among these isomers, the ortho-to-para ratio (OPR), plays a crucial role in a variety of processes related to the thermodynamics of star-forming gas and to the fundamental chemistry affecting the deuteration of water in molecular clouds, commonly used to determine the origin of water in Solar System bodies. Here, for the first time, we assess the evolution of the OPR starting from the warm neutral medium by means of state-of-the-art 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of turbulent molecular clouds. Our results show that star-forming clouds exhibit a low OPR (≪0.1) already at moderate densities (∼1000 cm−3). We also constrain the cosmic-ray ionisation rate, finding that 10−16 s−1 is the lower limit required to explain the observations of diffuse clouds. Our results represent a step forward in the understanding of the star and planet formation processes providing a robust determination of the chemical initial conditions for both theoretical and observational studies.

Abstract

Background The European Atherosclerosis Society Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Studies Collaboration (FHSC) global registry provides a platform for the global surveillance of familial hypercholesterolaemia through harmonisation and pooling of multinational data. In this study, we aimed to characterise the adult population with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia and described how it is detected and managed globally. Methods Using FHSC global registry data, we did a cross-sectional assessment of adults (aged 18 years or older) with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of probable or definite heterozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia at the time they were entered into the registries. Data were assessed overall and by WHO regions, sex, and index versus non-index cases. Findings Of the 61 612 individuals in the registry, 42 167 adults (21 999 [53.6%] women) from 56 countries were included in the study. Of these, 31 798 (75.4%) were diagnosed with the Dutch Lipid Clinic Network criteria, and 35 490 (84.2%) were from the WHO region of Europe. Median age of participants at entry in the registry was 46.2 years (IQR 34.3-58.0); median age at diagnosis of familial hypercholesterolaemia was 44.4 years (32.5-56.5), with 40.2% of participants younger than 40 years when diagnosed. Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors increased progressively with age and varied by WHO region. Prevalence of coronary disease was 17.4% (2.1% for stroke and 5.2% for peripheral artery disease), increasing with concentrations of untreated LDL cholesterol, and was about two times lower in women than in men. Among patients receiving lipid-lowering medications, 16 803 (81.1%) were receiving statins and 3691 (21.2%) were on combination therapy, with greater use of more potent lipid-lowering medication in men than in women. Median LDL cholesterol was 5.43 mmol/L (IQR 4.32-6.72) among patients not taking lipid-lowering medications and 4.23 mmol/L (3.20-5.66) among those taking them. Among patients taking lipid-lowering medications, 2.7% had LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L; the use of combination therapy, particularly with three drugs and with proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors, was associated with a higher proportion and greater odds of having LDL cholesterol lower than 1.8 mmol/L. 47. Non-isotropic feedback from accreting spinning black holes

Abstract

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are massive black holes (BHs) caught in the act of accreting gas at the centre of their host galaxies. Part of the accreting mass is converted to energy and released into the surrounding medium, in a process loosely referred to as AGN feedback. Most numerical simulations include AGN feedback as a sub-grid model, wherein energy or momentum (or both) is coupled to the nearby gas. In this work, we implement a new momentum-driven model in the hydrodynamics code GIZMO, in which accretion from large scales is mediated by a sub-grid accretion disc model, and gas particles are stochastically kicked over a bi-conical region, to mimic observed kinetic winds. The feedback cone’s axis can be set parallel either to the angular momentum of the gas surrounding the BH or to the BH spin direction, which is self-consistently evolved within the accretion-disc model. Using a circumnuclear disc (CND) as a test bed, we find that (i) the conical shape of the outflow is always visible and is weakly dependent on the launching orientation and aperture, resulting in comparable mass inflows and outflows; (ii) the cone’s orientation is also similar amongst our tests, and it is not always the same as the initial value, due to the interaction with the CND playing a crucial role in shaping the outflow; and (iii) the velocity of the outflow, instead, differs and strongly depends on the interplay with the CND.

Abstract

Massive black holes (BHs) inhabiting galactic nuclei can be described by two parameters only, i.e. mass and spin, that change through cosmic time in response to accretion and merger events. While most numerical simulations accurately track the BH mass, spin evolution is rarely taken into account. In this work, we implement and validate a self-consistent sub-grid model for the evolution of the BH mass and spin via gas accretion in the hydrodynamics code GIZMO. The model assumes that accretion from resolved scales does not occur instantaneously, but is mediated by a sub-grid geometrically thin $\alpha$-disc. After validating our model semi-analytically, we test it in an idealized environment consisting of a circumnuclear disc, where gas accretion onto the accretion disc is consistently determined by GIZMO. In the absence of any accretion-related feedback, the spin evolution closely traces that observed in the semi-analytical models and depends on the free parameters of our implementation, such as the initial BH spin, angular momentum of the accretion disc, and the radius at which the gas inflow circularises. In GIZMO, we also couple our model with the biconical-outflow model presented in a companion paper, wherein the feedback axis is always aligned with the BH spin. In this last case, the evolution of the central BH differs significantly from the previous cases, since the feedback process modifies the gas dynamics and its inflow rates from resolved scales. Abstract

Far-infrared (FIR) emission lines are a powerful tool to investigate the properties of the interstellar medium, especially in high-redshift galaxies, where ALMA observations have provided unprecedented information. Interpreting such data with state-of-the-art cosmological simulations post-processed with CLOUDY, has provided insights on the internal structure and gas dynamics of these systems. However, no detailed investigation of the consistency and uncertainties of this kind of analysis has been performed to date. Here, we compare different approaches to estimate FIR line emission from state-of-the-art cosmological simulations, either with CLOUDY or with on-the-fly non-equilibrium chemistry. We find that [CII]$_{158\mu}$ predictions are robust to the model variations we explored. [OI] emission lines, that typically trace colder and denser gas relative to [CII]$_{158\mu}$, are instead model-dependent, as these lines are strongly affected by the thermodynamic state of the gas and non-equilibrium photoionisation effects.
