The dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere, whether from industrial emissions, wildfires, or other sources, poses significant challenges to air quality management and environmental protection. Understanding the behavior of plumes is crucial for predicting their dispersion patterns and potential impacts on human health and the environment. In this work, we present a new plume rise scheme based on heat transport. The idea at the basis of the new algorithm is the same as the actual scheme embedded in the Lagrangian Particle Model SPRAY-WEB. The temperature difference between the ambient and the plume and the vertical velocity of the plume are expressed on a fixed Eulerian grid. The particles are assigned with an equivalent momentum, temperature, mass, and density, transported as scalar quantities with the particles following the Lagrangian description of the motion. This allows us to reproduce the entrainment phenomenon as a mixing of two fluids (environmental air and plume) with different temperatures: the resulting temperature is given by Richmann's law. The results obtained with the old plume rise algorithm and the new one are compared with Briggs (1975) analytical curve in the case of an idealized atmosphere with a neutral stratification and a constant horizontal wind and with experimental data. From the comparison in an ideal atmosphere, it emerged that with the new algorithm, the plume reaches a higher height than with the old one and the asymptotic trend obtained with both models follows the Briggs curve. As for the comparison with the measurements, the results obtained with the new algorithm are in better agreement with the experimental data than the old one.

Abstract Pollinator-driven evolution of floral traits is thought to be a major driver of angiosperm speciation and diversification. Ophrys orchids mimic female insects to lure male pollinators into pseudocopulation. This strategy, called sexual deception, is species-specific, thereby providing strong premating reproductive isolation. Identifying the genomic architecture underlying pollinator adaptation and speciation may shed light on the mechanisms of angiosperm diversification. Here, we report the 5.2 Gb chromosome-scale genome sequence of Ophrys sphegodes. We find evidence for transposable element expansion that preceded the radiation of the O. sphegodes group, and for gene duplication having contributed to the evolution of chemical mimicry. We report a highly differentiated genomic candidate region for pollinator-mediated evolution on chromosome 2. The Ophrys genome will prove useful for investigations into the repeated evolution of sexual deception, pollinator adaptation and the genomic architectures that facilitate evolutionary radiations.

Pinewood, increasingly used in construction and interior fittings, emits high amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which tend to accumulate in indoor air. Whether indoor VOCs affect the development of atopic dermatitis (AD) is a matter of debate. We aimed to evaluate the effects of pinewood VOCs on the development of AD-like inflammatory phenotype and linked microbiome alterations, both hallmarks of AD. An oxazolone-induced mouse model of AD was exposed to three different VOC concentrations emitted by pinewood plates throughout the experiment. The disease course and associated immunological and microbiological changes were evaluated. To validate and translate our results to humans, human keratinocytes were exposed to a synthetic pinewood VOCs mixture in an AD environment. Pinewood emitted mainly terpenes, which at a total concentration of 5 mg/m3 significantly improved oxazolone-induced key AD parameters, such as serum total IgE, transepidermal water loss, barrier gene alteration, inflammation, and dysbiosis. Notably, exposure to pinewood VOCs restored the loss of microbial richness and inhibit Staphylococci expansion characteristic of the oxazolone-induced mouse AD model. Most beneficial effects of pinewood VOCs were dose-dependent. In fact, lower (10 mg/m3) pinewood VOC levels maintained only limited beneficial effects, such as preserving the microbiome richness or impeding Staphylococci expansion, respectively. In the human in-vitro model, exposure of keratinocytes grown in an AD environment to a pinewood VOCs mixture reduced the release of inflammatory markers. In conclusion, our results indicate that airborne phytochemicals emitted from pinewood have beneficial effects on an AD-like phenotype and associated dysbiosis. These investigations highlight the effects of terpenes as environmental compounds in the prevention and/or control of atopic skin disease.

Abstract As a contribution to national strategic energy planning, recent developments in meteorological modeling and wind generation technologies have improved the representation of the spatio‐temporal features of wind. This paper describes an updated Italian Wind Atlas (Atlante EOLico ItaliANo [AEOLIAN]) released in the early 2000s. The objective of AEOLIAN is to guide future wind generation to accord with ambitious European greenhouse gas emission targets set for 2030 and 2050. AEOLIAN is the result of a collaboration effort between Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico (RSE) SpA and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which jointly developed a novel approach combining high‐resolution numerical weather modeling with the Analog Ensemble (AnEn) statistical technique. This paper uses dynamical model runs with hourly output for 1990–2019 with 4 km horizontal grid spacing. For 2015–2019, an inner grid nest with 1.33 km horizontal grid spacing is used. The AnEn is then employed to temporally extend the 5 years of high‐resolution runs back through 1990–2014 to create a 30‐year dataset for Italy and surrounding marine areas. A thorough verification is carried out using 104 observational stations homogeneously distributed throughout the territory. Compared with other state‐of‐the‐art products, AEOLIAN provides enhanced accuracy over complex terrain thanks to higher horizontal resolution and the assimilation of observational wind data over the domain, which result in a reduction of model bias on complex terrain and a better reconstruction of the wind distributions. Finally, a new WebGIS interface (https://atlanteeolico.rse-web.it/) to explore AEOLIAN data is described.

The introduction of maker technology and personal fabrication has radically changed how we learn, design and innovate. In recent years, a growing number of people have begun to use a broad range of these creative technologies. A common challenge in the use of these electronic technologies, particularly for students, is the difficulties that arise during circuit wiring prototyping. Today, few studies have highlighted the factors that cause errors among student during their electronic circuit learning activities. This research investigates the causes of wiring problems and troubleshooting strategies during the prototyping of electronic circuits by students. We conducted an ethnographic study of undergraduate students at a university design school who were involved in prototyping electronic circuits with creative technologies. We performed a microanalysis of the students' interactions and dialogues following the distributed cognition framework. Our results show the significance of meaningful representations of information on circuit wiring tools, in addition to the importance of common knowledge among the students for reasoning about electronic circuit wiring and the detection and solving of wiring errors. This study highlights the relations between the types of wiring errors and the students' troubleshooting strategies. In addition to informing educational practitioners, our conclusions highlight the need for further studies and the demand for a redesign of electronic wiring prototyping tools.

BackgroundAllergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) is able to restore immune tolerance to allergens in allergic patients. However, some patients do not or only poorly respond to current treatment protocols. Therefore, there is a need for deeper mechanistic insights and further improvement of treatment strategies. The relevance of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a ligand-dependent transcription factor, has been investigated in several inflammatory diseases, including allergic asthma. However, its potential role in AIT still needs to be addressed.MethodsA murine model of AIT in ovalbumin-induced allergic airway inflammation was performed in AhR-deficient (AhR-/-) and wild-type mice. Furthermore, AIT was combined with the application of the high-affinity AhR agonist 10-chloro-7H-benzimidazo[2,1-a]benzo[de]iso-quinolin-7-one (10-Cl-BBQ) as an adjuvant to investigate the effects of AhR activation on therapeutic outcome.ResultsAlthough AhR-/- mice suffer stronger allergic responses than wild-type mice, experimental AIT is comparably effective in both. Nevertheless, combining AIT with the administration of 10-Cl-BBQ improved therapeutic effects by an AhR-dependent mechanism, resulting in decreased cell counts in the bronchoalveolar fluid, decreased pulmonary Th2 and Th17 cell levels, and lower sIgE levels.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that the success of AIT is not dependent on the AhR. However, targeting the AhR during AIT can help to dampen inflammation and improve tolerogenic vaccination. Therefore, AhR ligands might represent promising candidates as immunomodulators to enhance the efficacy of AIT.

The non-breeding distribution and ecology of many migratory songbirds are often poorly studied, but very relevant for their conservation in a changing climate. The Snow Bunting is the most northerly breeding passerine worldwide, and winters in temperate/temperate-cold areas. Characterised by specialisation for cold climate and strong migratory connectivity, it underwent a recent range contraction and is declining because of rising winter temperatures. Investigating its migration and wintering distribution and ecology is relevant to understand the possible impacts of climate change. We used citizen science records to describe and model the species distribution during migration and winter in Italy, and evaluated its cultural relevance. Snow Buntings occur in Italy in November-mid April, mostly clustered in northern and, particularly, north-eastern regions (coasts and plateaus in mountain regions); all the observations involving >12 individuals occurred at a single site in the Lessinia plateau. The elevation pattern of observations (both during winter and migration) showed a bimodal distribution (mostly at the sea level and in middle-elevation mountains, peaking around 1500 m asl). Species Distribution Models showed that the most suitable areas largely coincide with the areas from where most observations occurred, and were similar during winter and migration. Such areas are characterised by relatively cold and dry climates, and by flat or gentle sloping terrain largely occupied by open or semi-open habitats (grassland, pastures, sandy habitats). Snow Buntings had a much higher occurrence rates in social media/networks than other bunting species, indicating that nature recreationists have a particular preference for this species, which can be used as a flagship species. The species will likely suffer from ongoing climate variation, and preserving suitable open landscapes, with grassland-dominated habitats, is key to the maintenance of suitable stop-over and wintering sites. At the same time, this would also benefit many declining breeding species.

Policosanols (PCs) are bioactive compounds extracted from different natural waxes. In this work, the purification, characterization and assessment of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity was carried out on PCs from an innovative source, i.e. a waxy material from supercritical-fluid extraction (SFE) of non-psychoactive Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) inflorescences. Starting from this material, PCs were obtained by microwave-assisted trans-esterification and hydrolysis, followed by preparative liquid chromatography under normal phase conditions. The purified product was characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD). In vitro cell-free and cell-based antioxidant and anti-inflammatory assays were then performed to assess their bioactivity.HPLC-ELSED analysis of the purified mixture from hemp wax revealed C26OH and C28OH as the main compounds. In vitro assays indicated an inhibition of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, a reduction of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation and of the activity of the neutrophil elastase. Immunoblotting assays allowed us to hypothesize the mechanism of action of the compounds of interest, given the higher levels of MAPK-activated protein kinase 2 (MK2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) protein expression in the PC pretreated HaCaT cells. In conclusion, even if more research is needed to unveil other molecular mechanisms involved in hemp PC activity, the results of this work suggest that these compounds may have potential for use in oxinflammation processes.

Monitoring soil water content (SWC) is vital for various applications, particularly in agriculture. This study compares SWC estimated by means of SCATSAR-SWI remote sensing (RS) at different depths (T-values) with Cosmic Ray Neutron Sensing (CRNS) across four agricultural sites in northern Italy. Additionally, it examines the spatial mismatch and representativeness of SWC products’ footprints based on different factors within the following areas: the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), soil properties (sand, silt, clay, Soil Organic Carbon (SOC)), and irrigation information. The results reveal that RS-derived SWC, particularly at T = 2 depth, exhibits moderate positive linear correlation (mean Pearson correlation coefficient, R = 0.6) and a mean unbiased Root–Mean–Square Difference (ubRMSD) of 14.90%SR. However, lower agreement is observed during summer and autumn, attributed to factors such as high biomass growth. Sites with less variation in vegetation and soil properties within RS pixels rank better in comparing SWC products. Although a weak correlation (mean R = 0.35) exists between median NDVI differences of footprints and disparities in SWC product performance metrics, the influence of vegetation greenness on the results is clearly identified. Additionally, RS pixels with a lower percentage of sand and SOC and silt loam soil type correlate to decreased agreement between SWC products. Finally, localized irrigation practices also partially explain some differences in the SWC products. Overall, the results highlight how RS pixel variability of the different factors can explain differences between SWC products and how this information should be considered when selecting optimal ground-based measurement locations for remote sensing comparison.

Any sharing mobility service aims to make urban mobility sustainable to help reduce environmental impacts and improve the quality of life for all in cities. Many transport services are not currently self-sustainable. The Life for Silver Coast (LifeSC) opened its mobility services on 22 May 2021 and offered electric mobility services during the summer for a few cities in Tuscany. E-bikes and e-scooters can be financially neutral, and even profitable, thanks to the low costs of the vehicles, but they only see a high utilization rate in winter. Shared electric cars, meanwhile, are not profitable. A new shared service that is viable must be profitable to become widely adopted and significantly contribute to sustainability. A few key characteristics have been identified, and one has been tested with a new business model that combines ride-sharing and car-sharing. The innovative Ride Sharing Algorithm (RSA) has been tested based on data from a potential city, Monterondo, where many commuters travel daily to Rome by train. The Italian census and local survey data allowed for the simulation of the scheduling of vehicle rides and an evaluation of the economic results, which could be positive if enough interest for such a system exists among the people, as at least 400 commuters from Monterotondo go to the train station daily in the morning and return in the afternoon. Such a transport demand would justify a new commercial sharing service by using the model tested with the RSA algorithm.

Ailanthus altissima is an invasive tree threatening the biodiversity in natural and disturbed habitats of temperate regions, primarily because of its high resprouting vigor. To test the effect of light exclusion on stem and root sprouting, black covers were applied on the cut stumps of 3-year-old saplings grown in pots. The treatments were as follows: SL, stumps exposed to light; SH, only stumps covered; SPH, the entire pot covered; C, intact control plants. The covers were removed when the root sprouts appeared. The emergence of stem and root sprouts was checked weekly, and their number and biomass were determined at the growth peak (cut I and III) and the end (cut II and IV) of two seasons after cutting. Stem sprouts were produced only in the first growth season in SL and SH and never in SPH and the controls. The number and biomass of the root sprouts were the highest in SH at cut I and in SL in the following cuts. In SH, the sprouting ceased completely after cut I, suggesting a rapid consumption of root reserves, while in SL and SPH, repeated cutting progressively reduced the sprouting vigor. We concluded that covering the stems after cutting is a promising technique to control ailanthus resprouting without the use of herbicides.

Real-time feedback is a growing trend in patient- and family experience (PFE) work as it allows for immediate service recovery, though it typically requires a significant investment of time and financial resources. We describe a partnership with our “edutainment” system to administer an automated daily experience question (the “Daily Pulse Measure [DPM]”) that allowed targeted just-in-time responses to low scores with minimal administrative cost. Through a series of Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles guided by family feedback, the question was created and modified, and the use of the question spread to all hospital units. The response rate was 23%, similar to our Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey response rate of 24% during the study period. Though the DPM did not have a consistent impact on the results of the 2 PFE survey questions we evaluated, units with improved PFE scores after the DPM roll-out tended to have more robust service recovery than those with low scores.

ObjectivesWait time for emergency care is a quality measure that affects clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. It is unknown if there is racial/ethnic variability in this quality measure in pediatric emergency departments (PEDs). We aim to determine whether racial/ethnic differences exist in wait times for children presenting to PEDs and examine between-site and within-site differences.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective cohort study for PED encounters in 2016 using the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network Registry, an aggregated deidentified electronic health registry comprising 7 PEDs. Patient encounters were included among all patients 18 years or younger at the time of the ED visit. We evaluated differences in emergency department wait time (time from arrival to first medical evaluation) considering patient race/ethnicity as the exposure.ResultsOf 448,563 visits, median wait time was 35 minutes (interquartile range, 17-71 minutes). Compared with non-Hispanic White (NHW) children, non-Hispanic Black (NHB), Hispanic, and other race children waited 27%, 33%, and 12% longer, respectively. These differences were attenuated after adjusting for triage acuity level, mode of arrival, sex, age, insurance, time of day, and month [adjusted median wait time ratios (95% confidence intervals): 1.11 (1.10-1.12) for NHB, 1.12 (1.11-1.13) for Hispanic, and 1.05 (1.03-1.06) for other race children compared with NHW children]. Differences in wait time for NHB and other race children were no longer significant after adjusting for clinical site. Fully adjusted median wait times among Hispanic children were longer compared with NHW children [1.04 (1.03-1.05)].ConclusionsIn unadjusted analyses, non-White children experienced longer PED wait times than NHW children. After adjusting for illness severity, patient demographics, and overcrowding measures, wait times for NHB and other race children were largely determined by site of care. Hispanic children experienced longer within-site and between-site wait times compared with NHW children. Additional research is needed to understand structures and processes of care contributing to wait time differences between sites that disproportionately impact non-White patients.

Abstract We report the evolution of the superconducting properties of a commercial coated conductor during deoxygenation and reoxygenation processes. By analyzing the changes on the critical temperature, T c, and critical current density, J c, at 4 and 77 K, we have identified the conditions that cause a complete deoxygenation of the coated conductor and, also, the reoxygenation conditions that allow a recovery of the superconducting properties. A complete suppression of superconductivity happens at ~ 500–550 °C under a pure argon flow. After a complete deoxygenation, we observed that a reoxygenation process at ~ 400–450 °C in pure oxygen flow allows, not only a full recovery, but even an improvement in J c, both at 4 and 77 K. Such an increase of J c is kept or even enhanced, especially at 77 K, in the presence of magnetic fields up to ~ 6 T. A microstructural analysis by transmission electron microscopy did not give evidence of major differences in the densities of Y2O3 nanoparticles and stacking faults between the pristine and reoxygenated samples, suggesting that these defects should not be the cause of the observed enhancement of J c . Therefore, the combined action of other types of defects, which could appear as a consequence of our reoxygenation process, and of a new level of oxygen doping should be responsible of the J c enhancement. The higher J c that can be achieved by using our simple reoxygenation process opens new parameter space for CCs optimization, which means choosing a proper pO2-temperature–time trajectory for optimizing J c.

Body fluid identification by means of mRNA profiling provides valuable supplementary information in forensic investigations. In particular, the detection of vaginal mucosa mRNA markers is highly relevant in sexual assault cases. Although the vagina undergoes characteristic age-related physiological changes over a lifetime, few studies have evaluated the efficacy of vaginal mRNA markers in women of different ages. In this multicentric study, a 19-plex mRNA profiling assay including vaginal-specific markers (CYP2B7P1, MUC4, MYOZ1) was tested in a collection of 6–20-month-old vaginal swabs obtained from pre- (n = 84) and postmenopausal (n = 55) female volunteer donors. Overall, participating laboratories were able to correctly identify ~85% of samples as vaginal mucosa by mRNA profiling. The assay’s success rate did not differ between the two age groups and was not affected by the time interval between swab collection and RNA analysis. MYOZ1 resulted a less sensitive vaginal marker compared to MUC4 and CYP2B7P1. A significant relative increase in the contribution to the total amplification signal was observed for MUC4, compared to CYP2B7P1 and MYOZ1, in postmenopausal women. Observation of other body fluids and tissues different from vaginal mucosa was also evaluated in connection to information on previous sexual activity and menstrual cycle phase at the time of sampling.

Abstract Introduction To describe subclinical angioid streaks (AS) as a frequent, peculiar age-related macular degeneration (AMD) phenotype, comparing features of eyes with subclinical AS with those of eyes with AMD without AS. Methods This was a retrospective, observational study. Among a patient cohort with AMD, we selected patients without known causes for AS whose eyes showed signs of angioid streaks (AS) on structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) but not on fundus examination. Selected OCT features of AS were Bruch’s membrane (BM) breaks and large BM dehiscences. Results Among 543 eyes of 274 patients with AMD (mean ± standard deviation: 82 ± 7 years), 73 eyes of 46 patients (81 ± 7 years; p = 0.432) showed AS features on OCT (OCT AS) that were not visible on fundus examination. Estimated prevalence of subclinical age-related AS was 13.4% (95% confidence interval 10.3–16.3%) in this AMD population. Fifty-three eyes (73%) with AS features were affected by peripapillary atrophy, often with a “petaloid-like” pattern, similar to typical features of AS disease. Almost all cases (97%) presented reticular pseudodrusen (RPD), with (41%) or without (59%) drusen showing a significant difference in RPD prevalence in OCT AS eyes in comparison to AMD eyes without subclinical AS using generalized estimating equations (P

BackgroundThe cutaneous manifestations of COVID-19 may be useful disease markers and prognostic indicators. Recently, postinfectious telogen effluvium and trichodynia have also been reported.ObjectiveTo evaluate the presence of trichodynia and telogen effluvium in patients with COVID-19 and describe their characteristics in relation to the other signs and symptoms of the disease.MethodsPatients with a history of COVID-19 presenting to the clinics of a group of hair experts because of telogen effluvium and/or scalp symptoms were questioned about their hair signs and symptoms in relation to the severity of COVID-19 and associated symptoms.ResultsData from 128 patients were collected. Telogen effluvium was observed in 66.3% of the patients and trichodynia in 58.4%. Trichodynia was associated with telogen effluvium in 42.4% of the cases and anosmia and ageusia in 66.1% and 44.1% of the cases, respectively. In majority (62.5%) of the patients, the hair signs and symptoms started within the first month after COVID-19 diagnosis, and in 47.8% of the patients, these started after 12 weeks or more.LimitationsThe recruitment of patients in specialized hair clinics, lack of a control group, and lack of recording of patient comorbidities.ConclusionThe severity of postviral telogen effluvium observed in patients with a history of COVID-19 infection may be influenced by COVID-19 severity. We identified early-onset (12 weeks) telogen effluvium.

Satellite remote sensing is currently an established, effective, and constantly used tool and methodology for monitoring agriculture and fertilisation. At the same time, in recent years, the need for the detection of livestock manure and digestate spreading on the soil is emerging, and the development of spectral indices and classification processes based on satellite multispectral data acquisitions is growing. However, the application of such indicators is still underutilised and, given the polluting impact of livestock manure and digestate on soil, groundwater, and air, an in-depth study is needed to improve the monitoring of this practice. Additionally, this paper aims at exposing a new spectral index capable of detecting the land affected by livestock manure and digestate spreading. This indicator was created by studying the spectral response of bare soil and livestock manure and digestate, using Copernicus Sentinel-2 MSI satellite acquisitions and ancillary datasets (e.g., soil moisture, precipitation, regional thematic maps). In particular, time series of multispectral satellite acquisitions and ancillary data were analysed, covering a survey period of 13 months between February 2022 and February 2023. As no previous indications on fertilisation practices are available, the proposed approach consists of investigating a broad-spectrum area, without investigations of specific test sites. A large area of approximately 236,344 hectares covering three provinces of the Emilia-Romagna Region (Italy) was therefore examined. A series of ground truth points were also collected for assessing accuracy by filling in the confusion matrix. Based on the definition of the spectral index, a value of the latter greater than three provides the most conservative threshold for detecting livestock manure and digestate spreading with an accuracy of 62.53%. Such results are robust to variations in the spectral response of the soil. On the basis of these very encouraging results, it is considered plausible that the proposed index could improve the techniques for detecting the spreading of livestock manure and digestate on bare ground, classifying the areas themselves with a notable saving of energy compared to the current investigation methodologies directly on the ground.

The current work encompasses a study of as-fabricated martensitic NiTi samples printed via Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) in the horizontal and vertical build orientations, with systematic variations in the L-PBF process parameters. The sample densities, compositions, thermal characteristics, and mechanical responses were analysed and correlated with L-PBF parameters. Mechanical responses measured and analysed included microhardness, impact energies, and elastic modulus. The process parameters were found to have a significant effect on the resulting properties. The variation in physical properties and mechanical responses between each sample of the vertical build were less compared to those measured for the horizontal built samples. The L-PBF samples were compressed to 6% engineering strain (within elastic limit), and their shape memory strains were thermally recovered. Digital Image Correlation (DIC) based full-field strain analysis was performed during compression to measure local strain fields which revealed in detail the macroscopic effects during detwinning. The shape memory capability of the L-PBF samples was quantised based on strain recoveries attained after thermal recovery. Microstructural variations in submicron scale were also analysed in as-fabricated, post-compression and post-recovery stages, showing the sample response during different deformation mechanisms.

The first floristic study of the historical monumental cemetery of San Cataldo in Modena (N-Italy) is presented. The research was performed in the period 2019–2022, considering only spontaneous individuals growing within the historical area (4.8 ha). A total of 266 taxa (species and subspecies) was found, of which 1 new for the flora of Italy (Malus × robusta ‘John Downie’), 2 new for the administrative region of Emilia-Romagna (Calocedrus decurrens and Salvia haematodes) and 1 new for the province of Modena (Epilobium ciliatum). Therophytes prevail (37.6%), followed by hemicryptophytes (31.6%), phanerophytes (16.2%) and geophytes (11.7%). The chorological spectrum is dominated by Eurasian species (32.0%), followed by Mediterranean (26.3%), Cosmopolitan (24.8%), Boreal (6%) and N-American (4.5%) ones. Allochthonous species are 16.5% of the list, with neophytes always prevailing over archaeophytes (28 vs. 9 species). Invasive species are 67.8% of the neophytes; on a regional scale they are 1.5% of the list. Protected species are 2.6% of the total; 3 of them are internationally protected and 2 are included in the red list of Italian flora. This study confirms the great biological richness of urban environments and the potential of historical cemeteries as a refugium for the conservation of species that have become rare, endangered or infrequent at a regional or national level, because of the heavy human impact on the territory.

Abstract Eyelashes and eyebrows have different functions, ranging from practical purposes such as protecting the eye apparatus from external hazards to the definition of our facial expression. For this reason, their loss could have both functional and psychological impact on patients’ quality of life. Complete or partial loss can occur any time during life, and identifying the cause is mandatory to establish a correct and prompt treatment. The aim of this paper is to create a practical guide for the management of the most common causes of madarosis to the best of our knowledge.

Transport planning and mobility management is nowadays of paramount importance, particularly in the urban context where innovative, sustainable, smart, and green mobility solutions are required to satisfy the citizen’s needs. Such ambitious objective requires a multidisciplinary research approach to address the problem from different perspectives from urban and geographical analysis to social studies including 3D mapping and urban infrastructure analysis. To collect and manage huge amount of data acquired and produced, big data and IOT/IOE technologies are exploited together with 3D city digital twin representations of the urban scenario to simulate, plan and evaluate urban policies and guide the urban development of the future. In this paper, the activities that will be carried out by an interdisciplinary group of researchers of the University of Florence, within the sustainable mobility centre (MOST), are presented and discussed.
