Research on the effectiveness of women in school leadership roles is plentiful in general literature. However, there is a notable scarcity of studies focusing on the effectiveness of women principals within Ethiopia's primary education system. This study examined the perceived effectiveness of women school principals' vis-à-vis the national professional standards for school principals in Ethiopia. Using a cross-sectional survey design, data were collected from 147 teachers of which 85 male and 62 women selected through a comprehensive sampling procedure. A survey questionnaire was employed to gather relevant information, and both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The study found that women were perceived positively as effective school leaders across key dimensions of Ethiopia's national professional standards. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in perceptions between male and women teachers in three dimensions (in fostering school vision and community leadership, t(145) = 1.013, p = .313, in instructional leadership, t(145) = .46 and p = .646 and in administrative leadership, t(145) = .791 and p = .43. The findings suggest the importance of boosting more women to pursue leadership roles in schools by encouraging successful women leaders and providing targeted training. These recommendations are particularly relevant for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers interested in promoting gender equality and effective leadership in the education sector.

Background. Prevalence surveys in Ethiopia indicate smear negative pulmonary tuberculosis (SNPTB) taking the major share of the overall TB burden. It has also been a diagnostic dilemma worldwide leading to diagnostic delays and difficulty in monitoring treatment outcomes. This study determines and compares the clinical and imaging findings in SNPTB and smear positive PTB (SPPTB). Methodology. A case-control study was conducted on 313 PTB (173 SNPTB) patients. Data and sputum samples were collected from consented patients. Smear microscopy, GeneXpert, and culture analyses were performed on sputum samples. Data were analyzed using Stata version 17; a P value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results. Of the 173 SNPTB patients, 42% were culture positive with discordances between test results reported by health facilities and Armauer Hansen Research Institute laboratory using concentrated smear microscopy. A previous history of TB and fewer cavitary lesions were significantly associated with SNPTB. Conclusions. Though overall clinical presentations of SNPTB patients resemble those seen in SPPTB patients, a prior history of TB was strongly associated with SNPTB. Subject to further investigations, the relatively higher discrepancies seen in TB diagnoses reflect the posed diagnostic challenges in SNPTB patients, as a higher proportion of these patients are also seen in Ethiopia.

BackgroundBurns are one of the most common forms of trauma globally. P. aeruginosa plays a prominent role as an etiological agent among burn patients. There is a paucity of information about the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of P. aeruginosa among burn patients in Ethiopia. Hence, this study was designed to assess the prevalence and antimicrobial-resistant patterns of P. aeruginosa among burn patients attending Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.MethodsHospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Yekatit 12 Hospital Medical College among burn patients from November 2020 to April 2021. Identification of P. aeruginosa was performed using Culture, Biochemical tests, and, Gram staining. Antimicrobial resistance testing was done using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Logistic regression was computed to determine associated factors.ResultsFrom 210 burn wound cultures, 27 (12.86%) were found positive for P. aeruginosa. All the isolates showed greater than 70% susceptibility to the tested antibiotics except Gentamycin, Ceftazidime, and, Ciprofloxacin. In addition, 33.33% of P. aeruginosa isolates were multidrug-resistant. Admission type, Hospital stay time and Total body surface area (TBSA) had a statistically significant association (all with P-value ConclusionOverall, the prevalence of P. aeruginosa isolates among burn patients is almost 13%. Most P. aeruginosa isolates were sensitive to Imipenem, while they were most resistant to Gentamycin. One-third of P. aeruginosa were multidrug-resistant. This suggests the need to monitor the treatment of infection with the pathogen to limit the possibility of the emergence of multidrug-resistant isolates in burn centers.

The main goal of the current paper was to determine the effects of perceived school climate dimensions (leadership, relationships, professional learning-teaching climate, safety, and physical environment) on students’ learning performance in upper primary schools. Correlational design consisted of structural equation modeling with mediation analysis was applied. Three hundred twenty-eight randomly chosen teachers and pupils from upper primary schools of Injibara and Chagni, Awi zone of Ethiopia participated. The 16-item school climate scale that was employed had an internal consistency score of 0.91 according to Cronbach’s alpha. To create a well-fitting measurement model, as well as to ascertain the convergent and discriminant validities and the composite reliability of school climate domains, confirmatory factor analysis was carried out. Together, the five school climate factors explained 19% variation on student academic performance. Academic achievement of students was directly and significantly influenced by school leadership and the professional learning-teaching environment. Pupils’ academic success was significantly and favorably directly impacted by the overall perceived favorable school climate. Positive professional learning-teaching environment fully mediated effect of physical setting and safety on learning achievement, even though it partially mediated the effect of leadership practice of school. Contribution of positive school climate elements to student’s learning achievement should also be further investigated using longitudinal multilevel structural equation models.

This study’s primary objective was to investigate the existing context of academic staff engagement in research and its relation to classroom teaching at public higher institutions located in the Amhara national regional state. A cross-sectional type of survey design was used to achieve this objective. The sample units and individuals were chosen using stratified random sampling procedure. Injibara University, Debre Markos University, and Bahir Dar University were three sample public universities located in Amhara Regional State that provided 251 participants for the study. A survey questionnaire was used to obtain the data. Both descriptive and inferential statistical methods were used to assess the data that had been gathered. The findings showed that the sample universities had very low levels of academic staff engagement in research activities. Most importantly, the results of this study also showed a weak but negative correlation between academic staff engagement in research and classroom teaching. Finally, possible recommendations were made based on the key results and conclusions.

TB is a significant problem in developing countries. Intestinal TB accounts for 2% of TB cases worldwide. Terminal ileum and cecum are the two commonly affected regions because of abundant lymphoid tissue, physiologic stasis, limited digestive activity and increased fluid and electrolyte absorption rate. Intestinal obstruction is the leading complication of intestinal TB, and it occurs because of intestinal luminal narrowing, multiple strictures or adhesions. The clinical presentation of patients with intestinal TB and post-TB intestinal obstruction is non-specific. It can be acute, chronic, or acute on chronic. Uncomplicated cases of intestinal TB can be managed medically. Surgery is reserved for complicated cases of intestinal TB, which includes peritonitis, intestinal obstruction and perforations. Here, we present a 37-year-old man who presented with long-standing, intermittent crampy abdominal pain and vomiting. He was diagnosed with chronic partial small bowel obstruction secondary to possibly small bowel carcinoma. We did segmental ileal resection and end-to-end ileo-ileal anastomosis. Postoperatively, the histopathology result turned out to be intestinal TB. This case report aims to make physicians aware of the rare condition of small bowel obstruction secondary to intestinal TB. Clinicians need to have a high index of suspicion in any patient with long-standing symptoms of partial obstruction and consider surgery and anti-TB once diagnosed.Keywords: intestinal TB, abdominal TB, gastrointestinal TB, granulomatous inflammation

Epi-data manager version 3.1 software was used for data entry and then exported to STATA version 15 for windows for analysis. Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to determine the determinants of time to euthyroidism and the summary measures of the adjusted hazard ratio with a 95% CI were presented, and P-value < 0.05 used to declare the statistical significance.Results: One hundred and seventy-five (51.9%) thyrotoxicosis patients become euthyroid with the median time to euthyroidism of 9 months, IQR (6– 12) months, with a total of 5542 person-months of observation. Age greater than 40 years (AHR = 0.7; 95% CI 0.54– 0.96), toxic multi-nodular goiter (AHR = 0.69; 95% CI 0.60– 0.87), World Health Organization goiter size three (AHR = 0.78; 95% CI 0.54– 0.82) and baseline free thyroxin (AHR = 0.96; 95% CI 0.80– 0.99) were the independent determinants of delayed time to euthyroidism.Conclusion: The time to euthyroidism was longer than the expected time. High baseline free thyroxin, toxic multinodular goiter, elderly patients, and patients with World Health Organization goiter size three were determinants of delayed time to euthyroidism.Keywords: thyrotoxicosis, propylthiouracil, euthyroid, South Tigrai, Ethiopia

Determining the status of VCT services is important to link HIV care and antiretroviral therapy.Methods: An institutional cross-sectional study design was conducted among 841 young students at Gondar College of Teachers’ Education. A self-administered questionnaire was used to gather the data. Descriptive statistics were performed. Bivariate and multivariable binary logistic regressions were used to identify factors associated with the use of VCTs. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence was used to report statistical significance.Results: The majority (71%) were aware of VCT services. More than one-third (37.8%, 95% CI: 34.6– 41.2) participants had used VCT services. Having peer groups used VCT (AOR=2.04, 95% CI: 1.31– 3.20), having partner (AOR: =1.6, 95% CI: 1.04– 2.45), desiring to have VCT in the future (AOR=3.58, 95% CI: 1.98– 6.50), being aware of VCT (AOR= 1.98, 95% CI: 1.20– 3.34), knew infected/dead individuals with HIV/AIDS (AOR=1.67, 95% CI: 1.07– 2.61), know test sites (AOR=2.01, 95% CI: 1.29– 3.13) were positively associated, whereas being married (AOR=0.36, 95% CI: 0.20– 0.63) and fear of confidentiality (AOR=0.23, 95% CI: 0.10– 0.52) were major barriers to use.Conclusion: Low use of VCTs, which was far away from the 90:90:90 WHO goal, has been noted. The use of VCT services was associated with having peer groups that used VCT, having a partner, wanting to have VCT in the future, knowing the infected/dead individual with HIV/AIDS, fear of confidentiality of results, knowing the test sites, and having awareness of VCT. Efforts are needed to strengthen the health system that also needs to pay attention to education about HIV and VCT.Keywords: youth, VCT utilization, Ethiopia, HIV

Abstract Background Staphylococcus aureus is a frequent colonizer of human and several animal species, including dairy cows. It is the most common cause of intramammary infections in dairy cows. Its public health importance increases inline to the continuous emergence of drug-resistant strains; such as Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). Indeed, the recent emergence of human and veterinary adapted MRSA demands serious attention. The aim of this study was to determine the burden and drug resistance pattern of S. aureus in dairy farms in Mekelle and determine the molecular characteristics of MRSA. Results This study was done on 385 lactating dairy cows and 71 dairy farmers. The ages of the cows and farmworkers were between 3 and 14 and 17–63 years respectively. S. aureus was isolated from 12.5% of cows and 31% of farmworkers. Highest resistance was observed for penicillin (> 90%) followed by tetracycline (32–35%) and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (10–27%). But no resistance was observed for vancomycin, daptomycin, and rifampin. Only one isolate was MRSA both phenotypically and harboring mecA. This isolate was from nasal of a farmworker and was MRSA SCCmec Iva, spa type t064 of CC8. Multi-drug resistance was observed in 6.2% of cow isolates and 13.6% of nasal isolates. Conclusions In this study, S. aureus infected 12.5% of dairy cows and colonized 31% of farmworkers. Except for penicillin, resistance to other drugs was rare. Although no MRSA was found from dairy cows the existence of the human and animal adapted and globally spread strain, MRSA SCCmec IVa spa t064, warrants for a coordinated action to tackle AMR in both human and veterinary in the country.

Laboratory identification of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species is not regularly performed while, they have a public health importance with a prevalence of more than 5% among pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to identify the NTM species and their clinical significance among PTB patients. A retrospective study was conducted at the Ethiopian Public Health Institution’s (EPHI’s) national TB referral laboratory. Stored NTM isolates were genotyped using GenoType Mycobacterium CM/AS kit (Hain Life science, Germany). Data pertinent to the study was extracted from the EPHI’s database and patients’ medical records. Between January 2 & December 28 of 2017, a total of 3,834 samples were processed from 698 TB patients of whom 50% were female. Among 3,317 samples with mycobacterial culture results 7.3% were NTM and majority of them were identified from smear negative TB patients. M. simiae was the /predominant NTM among the genotyped isolates. All the studied NTM species were not clinically important however, considering the similarity of clinical and radiologic findings between NTM and MTBC infected patients, integrating NTM species identification in the routine TB laboratory diagnosis may augment clinicians’ decision particularly in DR-TB patients. Additional similar prospective study with a larger sample size is recommended. Moreover, urgent improvements on patients’ record keeping practice are required in the studied hospitals.

BackgroundThe World Health Organization has declared that infection with SARS-CoV-2 is a pandemic. Experiences with SARS in 2003 and SARS-CoV-2 have shown that health professionals are at higher risk of contracting COVID-19. Hence, it has been recommended that aperiodic wide-scale assessment of the knowledge and preparedness of health professionals regarding the current COVID-19 pandemic is critical.ObjectivesThis study aimed to assess the knowledge and preparedness of health professionals regarding COVID-19 among selected hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.MethodsA facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted from the last week of March to early April, 2020. Government (n = 6) and private hospitals (n = 4) were included. The front-line participants with high exposure were proportionally recruited from their departments. The collected data from a self-administered questionnaire were entered using EpiData and analyzed in SPSS software. Both descriptive statistics and inferential statistics (chi-square tests) are presented.ResultsA total of 1334 health professionals participated in the study. The majority (675, 50.7%) of the participants were female. Of the total, 532 (39.9%) subjects were nurses/midwives, followed by doctors (397, 29.8%) and pharmacists (193, 14.5%). Of these, one-third had received formal training on COVID-19. The mean knowledge score of participants was 16.45 (±4.4). Regarding knowledge about COVID-19, 783 (58.7%), 354 (26.5%), and 196 (14.7%) participants had moderate, good, and poor knowledge, respectively. Lower scores were seen in younger age groups, females, and non-physicians. Two-thirds (63.2%) of the subjects responded that they had been updated by their hospital on COVID-19. Of the total, 1020 (76.5%) participants responded that television, radio, and newspapers were their primary sources of information. Established hospital preparedness measures were confirmed by 43-57% of participants.ConclusionThe current study revealed that health professionals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, already know important facts but had moderate overall knowledge about the COVID-19 pandemic. There were unmet needs in younger age groups, non-physicians, and females. Half of the respondents mentioning inadequate preparedness of their hospitals point to the need for more global solidarity, especially concerning the shortage of consumables and lack of equipment.

Background Because of limited infrastructure and skilled human capital, the etiology of meningitis is rarely identified in developing countries like Ethiopia. This results in unnecessary antibiotics use, economic crisis, hospitalization, and related nosocomial infections. Thus, we aimed to assess the epidemiology of human enteroviruses (HEVs) among clinically suspected meningitis cases in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to August 2020 at selected Hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was conducted on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collected from 146 clinically suspected meningitis and bacterial culture-negative patients. SPSS v 21.0 was used for data analysis and bivariate correlation was done for the association between variables of interest. Results HEVs were detected in 39 (26.7%) of the 146 clinically suspected meningitis cases. Most of the HEVs cases 28 (71.9%) were detected in younger-aged infants less than 1 year. The most commonly observed clinical manifestations were vomiting (75.5%) followed by fever (56.8%) and impaired consciousness or irritability (50.7%). The mean length of hospital stay for patients with enteroviral meningitis was 9 days. Many patients with HEVs were recovered with sequelae (46.2%), and HEVs has contributed for one out of the nine meningeal deaths (11.1%). Conclusions HEVs were found to be the commonest cause of morbidity and mortality in all age groups. Many of the patients were mistreated with antibiotics and hospitalized. The detection of HEVs in 26.7% of clinically suspected meningitis cases indicated the need for molecular tests in investigating the etiology of meningitis. Therefore, we suggest the introduction of molecular tests as a routine practice in referral hospitals and the need to further characterize circulating HEVs strains.

The objective of this study was to explore the contents of moral and character education for children and the pedagogy or approach employed by parents and teachers to teach character and moral education for children. The study was conducted in 18 schools found in East Gojjam, West Gojjam and Awi administrative zones. Preprimary and primary school teachers (N = 272) and one of the parents of children (N = 272) participated in the study. Concurrent mixed design was employed and quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using questionnaire and document analysis respectively. Descriptive statistics was employed to analyze the quantitative data and thematic analysis was applied to analyze qualitative data. The study found that among the six categories of character (caring, honesty, emotional intelligence, responsibility and respect) parents emphasized on teaching children to be honest (M = 2.6,SD = 0.46) and responsible M = 2.48,SD = 0.38) to their actions and behaviors. Teachers give high emphasis for teaching children to be respecting and caring to others and to Fairness (M = 2.62, SD = 0.43) and Respect (M = 2.63,SD = 0.37). Advising is the most frequently used common approache used by parents and teachers. Besides, using fairy tales with animal characters and songs are mostly found to be important approaches to teach character education about right and wrong behaviors to children. The study reveals that there are pieces of moral and character contents included across different subjects. Yet, there is a challenge in providing character and moral education as a separate subject in schools and failure of parents and teachers to be good role models for children. This implies that the Ministry of Education shall plan character and moral education to be offered as a separate subject for preprimary and primary school children and parents and teachers need to work in collaboration to teach character and moral education for children.

Sesame production under irrigation is limited in Ethiopia because of in availability of high yielding varieties, inadequate and inefficient irrigation schemes, and insignificant awareness of producers. This study, comprising 13 sesame genotypes, was conducted around Humera and Werer during 2018 and 2019 under irrigation. The design was randomized completely block design with three replications and the objectives were to develop high yielding genotypes and identify important agronomic traits. Multivariate statistical methods like Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) model, Principal Component Analysis, Cluster and factor analyses were used. The genotypes (6.22%), environments (42.62) and Genotype × Environment Interactions (25.09%) were statistically (p < 0.001) significant for the agronomic traits. The grain yield in each observation varied from 383 kg/ha to 2044 kg/ha and the grand mean yield was 820.19 kg/ha. The highest mean yield was recorded from G12 (948.6 kg/ha) followed by G4 (938.9 kg/ha) while the lowest was recorded from G8 (703.1 kg/ha). G1, G4, G12, G5, G8, G11 and G13 are identified as unstable genotypes while G2, G3, G6, and G9 are stable genotypes. The genotypes were grouped in to four clusters and cluster-II was characterized as the high yielding cluster and it was also associated with grain yield, pods per plant, branches per plant and thousand seed weight. Branches per plant, pods per plant and thousand seed weight may be most determinant and crucial in developing high yielding sesame varieties. This finding recommends that G4 and G6 are desirable genotypes and can be used for irrigation production.

We employ analytical transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to correlate the structural and chemical environment variations within a stacked epitaxial thin film of the high entropy oxide (HEO) Mg0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Cu0.2Zn0.2O (J14), with two layers grown at different substrate temperatures (500 and 200 °C) using pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Electron diffraction and atomically resolved STEM imaging reveal the difference in out-of-plane lattice parameters in the stacked thin film, which is further quantified on a larger scale using four-dimensional STEM (4D-STEM). In the layer deposited at a lower temperature, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) mapping indicates drastic changes in the oxidation states and bonding environment for Co ions, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) mapping detects more significant cation deficiency. Ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate that vacancies on the cation sublattice of J14 result in significant electronic and structural changes. The experimental and computational analyses indicate that low temperatures during film growth result in cation deficiency, an altered chemical environment, and reduced lattice parameters while maintaining a single phase. Our results demonstrate that the complex correlation of configurational entropy, kinetics, and thermodynamics can be utilized for accessing a range of metastable configurations in HEO materials without altering cation proportions, enabling further engineering of functional properties of HEO materials.
