Emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), such as pharmaceutical compounds, are of growing environmental concern, and there is a need to develop new materials and technologies for their efficient removal. Here we developed a highly porous and stable zirconium–ellagate framework, denoted SU-102, which was used to remove EOCs from water, including real municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent. SU-102 adsorbs cationic EOCs with particularly high efficiencies, and of the 17 pharmaceutical EOCs detected in wastewater treatment plant effluent, all 9 cationic species were removed with efficiencies of at least 79.0–99.6%, emphasizing the importance of framework charge on selectivity. As a second mechanism of EOC removal, SU-102 photodegraded the antibiotic sulphamethazine under visible light. SU-102 is synthesized from ellagic acid, an edible polyphenol building unit, highlighting the possibility of creating stable high-performance multi-functional materials from sustainably sourced plant-based components.

We propose a new method for the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from post-consumer cotton textiles through surface functionalization followed by mechanical treatment. Cotton-based textiles were esterified using an 85 wt% solution of citric acid at 100 °C, then further fibrillated in a microfluidizer. The final product, citrated cellulose nanocrystals (CitCNCs), was a dispersion of needle-like nanoparticles with high crystallinity. Up to 78 wt% of the cotton fabric was converted to CitCNCs that exhibited higher yields and a higher surface group content than CNCs extracted through H2SO4 hydrolysis, although CitCNCs showed a broader size distribution and decreased thermal stability. Experimental data supported by DFT calculations showed that the carboxyl groups on the CitCNC surface are bonded to cellulose by mono or diester linkages. An early-stage life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to evaluate the environmental impact of using discarded textiles as a source of cellulose and analyze the environmental performance of the production of CitCNCs. Our work showed a significant reduction in the environmental burden of CNC extraction using post-consumer cotton instead of wood pulp, making clothing a good feedstock. The environmental impact of CitCNC production was mainly dominated by citric acid. As a proof of concept, around 58 wt% of the citric acid was recovered through evaporation and subsequent crystallization, which could reduce climate impact by 40%. With this work, we introduce a catalyst-free route to valorize textiles with the extraction of CitCNCs and how conducting LCA in laboratory-scale processes might guide future development and optimization.

Co-free Li-rich layered oxides are gaining interest as feasible positiveelectrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in terms of energy density, costreduction, and alleviating safety concerns. Thisparticular structure was investigated with powder neutron diffraction, high-resolutionanalytical transmission electron microscopy imaging, and electron energy loss spectroscopic characterization. Introduction: Burns are one of the most common injuries among children. Despite the scale of the problem, there is no generally accepted algorithm for dealing with burn wounds in children in Poland. Aim: The aim of our study was to evaluate our treatment scheme as well as the long-term effects of burn treatment in our department. Material and methods: We conducted a telephone survey with the parents of patients treated at our ward in 01.01.2016–01.01.2021 due to thermal burns. To assess the cosmetic effect of treatment, the modified Vancouver Scar Scale (mVSS) was used, as well as the evaluation of parents’ satisfaction with the treatment of patients on a scale from 1 to 10. Criteria to be included were the thermal burn of the skin to at least a 2b degree and/or burns with not less than 8% of the Total Body Surface Area (TBSA), as well as answering all the questions included in the questionnaire. The inclusion criteria were met by 38 out of 97 hospitalized patients. Results: 26.32% of patients achieved 0 points on the mVSS, 21.05% achieved 1 point, 15.79% achieved 2 points, 15.79% achieved 3 points, 2.63% patients received 4 points, 5.26% patients received 5 points, 5.26% patients received 7 points, 2.63% patients received 8 points, 2.63% patients received 9 points, 2.63% of patients received 10 points, none of the patients received 6 and 11 points higher. 3% of parents rated their satisfaction at 5 points, 3% of caretakers as 7 points, 8% as 8 points, 8% as 9 points, and 89% as 10 points. Discussion: Our treatment algorithm brings good therapeutic effects and is also very well received by the patients' parents. In order to carry out a nationwide standardization of the treatment of childhood burn wounds, it would be necessary to conduct a similarly constructed study in a multicenter setting.

Direct hydroxylation via the functionalization of tertiary benzylic C(sp(3))-H bonds is of great significance for obtaining tertiary alcohols, which find wide applications in pharmaceuticals as well as in fine chemical industries. However, current synthetic procedures use toxic reagents, and therefore, the development of a sustainable strategy for the synthesis of tertiary benzylic alcohols is highly desirable. To solve this problem, herein, we report a metal-free heterogeneous photocatalyst to synthesize the hydroxylated products using oxygen as the key reagent. Various benzylic substrates were employed into our mild reaction conditions to afford the desirable products in good to excellent yields. More importantly, the gram-scale reaction was achieved via harvesting direct solar energy and exhibited high quantity of the product. The high stability of the catalyst was proved via recycling the catalyst and spectroscopic analyses. Finally, a possible mechanism was proposed based on electron paramagnetic resonance and other experimental evidence.

Despite significant potential as energy storage materials for electric vehicles due to their combination of high energy density per unit cost and reduced environmental and ethical concerns, Co-free lithium ion batteries based off layered Mn oxides presently lack the longevity and stability of their Co-containing counterparts. Here, we demonstrate a reduction in this performance gap via chemical doping, with Li$_{1.1}$Ni$_{0.35}$Mn$_{0.55}$O$_2$ achieving an initial discharge capacity of 159 mAhg$^{-1}$ at C/3 rate and a corresponding capacity retention of 94.3% after 150 cycles. We subsequently explore the nanoscale origins of this improvement through a combination of advanced diffraction, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy techniques, finding that optimized doping profiles lead to an improved structural and chemical compatibility between the two constituent sub-phases that characterize the layered Mn oxide system, resulting in the formation of unobstructed lithium ion pathways between them. We also directly observe a structural stabilization effect of the host compound near the surface using aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and integrated differential phase contrast imaging., 20 pages, 8 figures

Flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are known for their vast functional diversities and variable pore architectures. Dynamic motions or perturbations are among the highly desired flexibilities, which are key to guest diffusion processes. Therefore, probing such motions, especially at an atomic level, is crucial for revealing the unique properties and identifying the applications of MOFs. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) are the most important techniques to characterize molecular motions but require pure samples or large single crystals (>5 × 5 × 5 μm3), which are often inaccessible for MOF synthesis. Recent developments of three-dimensional electron diffraction (3D ED) have pushed the limits of single-crystal structural analysis. Accurate atomic information can be obtained by 3D ED from nanometer- and submicrometer-sized crystals and samples containing multiple phases. Here, we report the study of molecular motions by using the 3D ED method in MIL-140C and UiO-67, which are obtained as nanosized crystals coexisting in a mixture. In addition to an ab initio determination of their framework structures, we discovered that motions of the linker molecules could be revealed by observing the thermal ellipsoid models and analyzing the atomic anisotropic displacement parameters (ADPs) at room temperature (298 K) and cryogenic temperature (98 K). Interestingly, despite the same type of linker molecule occupying two symmetry-independent positions in MIL-140C, we observed significantly larger motions for the isolated linkers in comparison to those reinforced by π–π stacking. With an accuracy comparable to that of SCXRD, we show for the first time that 3D ED can be a powerful tool to investigate dynamics at an atomic level, which is particularly beneficial for nanocrystalline materials and/or phase mixtures.

We report the first magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study on Sn(NCN). In this compound the spatially elongated (NCN)2− ion is assumed to develop two distinct forms: either cyanamide (N≡C–N2−) or carbodiimide (−N=C=N−). Our 14N MAS NMR results reveal that in Sn(NCN) the (NCN)2− groups exist exclusively in the form of symmetric carbodiimide ions with two equivalent nitrogen sites, which is in agreement with the X-ray diffraction data. The 14N quadrupolar coupling constant | C Q | $\vert {C}_{\text{Q}}\vert $ ≈ 1.1 MHz for the −N=C=N− ion in Sn(NCN) is low when compared to those observed in molecular compounds that comprise cyano-type N≡C– moieties ( | C Q | $\vert {C}_{\text{Q}}\vert $ > 3.5 MHz). This together with the information from 14N and 13C chemical shifts indicates that solid-state NMR is a powerful tool for providing atomic-level insights into anion species present in these compounds. The experimental NMR results are corroborated by high-level calculations with quantum chemistry methods.

Perovskite-type oxhydrides such as BaTiO3−xHy exhibit mixed hydride ion and electron conduction and are an attractive class of materials for developing energy storage devices. However, the underlying mechanism of electric conductivity and its relation to the composition of the material remains unclear. Here we report detailed insights into the hydride local environment, the electronic structure and hydride conduction dynamics of barium titanium oxyhydride. We demonstrate that DFT-assisted solid-state NMR is an excellent tool for differentiating between the different feasible electronic structures in these solids. Our results indicate that upon reduction of BaTiO3 the introduced electrons are delocalized among all Ti atoms forming a bandstate. Furthermore, each vacated anion site is reoccupied by at most a single hydride, or else remains vacant. This single occupied bandstate structure persists at different hydrogen concentrations (y = 0.13−0.31) and a wide range of temperatures (∼ 100−300 K).

This systematic review focuses on using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect COVID-19 infection with the help of X-ray images.

Electronic structure calculations are fundamentally important for the interpretation of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra from paramagnetic systems that include organometallic and inorganic compounds, catalysts, or metal-binding sites in proteins. Prediction of induced paramagnetic NMR shifts requires knowledge of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters: the electronic g tensor, zero-field splitting D tensor, and hyperfine A tensor. The isotropic part of A, called the hyperfine coupling constant (HFCC), is one of the most troublesome properties for quantum chemistry calculations. Yet, even relatively small errors in calculations of HFCC tend to propagate into large errors in the predicted NMR shifts. The poor quality of A tensors that are currently calculated by density functional theory (DFT) constitutes a bottleneck in improving the reliability of interpretation of the NMR spectra from paramagnetic systems. In this work, electron correlation effects in calculations of HFCCs with a hierarchy of ab initio methods were assessed, and the applicability of different levels of DFT approximations and the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) method was tested. These assessments were performed for the set of selected test systems comprising an organic radical, and complexes with transition metal and rare-earth ions, for which experimental data are available. Severe deficiencies of DFT were revealed but the CCSD method was able to deliver good agreement with experimental data for all systems considered, however, at substantial computational costs. We proposed a more computationally tractable alternative, where the A was computed with the coupled cluster theory exploiting locality of electron correlation. This alternative is based on the domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster singles and doubles (DLPNO-CCSD) method. In this way the robustness and reliability of the coupled cluster theory were incorporated into the modern formalism for the prediction of induced paramagnetic NMR shifts, and became applicable to systems of chemical interest. This approach was verified for the bis(cyclopentadienyl)vanadium(II) complex (vanadocene), and the metal-binding site of the Zn(II) → Co(II) substituted superoxide dismutase (SOD) metalloprotein. Excellent agreement with experimental NMR shifts was achieved, which represented a substantial improvement over previous theoretical attempts. Effects of vibrational corrections to orbital shielding and hyperfine tensor were evaluated and discussed within the second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) framework.

Methane has been successfully encapsulated within cages of C60 fullerene, which is an appropriate model system to study confinement effects. Its chemistry and physics are also relevant for theoretical model descriptions. Here we provide insights into intermolecular interactions and predicted spectroscopic responses of the CH4@C60 complex and compared them with results from other methods and with data from the literature. Local energy decomposition analysis (LED) within the domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) framework was used, and an efficient protocol for studies of endohedral complexes of fullerenes is proposed. This approach allowed us to assess energies in relation to electronic and geometric preparation, electrostatics, exchange, and London dispersion for the CH4@C60 endohedral complex. The calculated stabilization energy of CH4 inside the C60 fullerene was −13.5 kcal mol−1 and its magnitude was significantly larger than the latent heat of evaporation of CH4. Evaluation of vibrational frequencies and polarizabilities of the CH4@C60 complex revealed that the infrared (IR) and Raman bands of the endohedral CH4 were essentially “silent” due to the dielectric screening effect of C60, which acted as a molecular Faraday cage. Absorption spectra in the UV-vis domain and ionization potentials of C60 and CH4@C60 were predicted. They were almost identical. The calculated 1H/13C NMR shifts and spin–spin coupling constants were in very good agreement with experimental data. In addition, reference DLPNO-CCSD(T) interaction energies for complexes with noble gases (Ng@C60; Ng = He, Ne, Ar, Kr) were calculated. The values were compared with those derived from supramolecular MP2/SCS-MP2 calculations and estimates with London-type formulas by Pyykko and coworkers [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2010, 12, 6187–6203], and with values derived from DFT-based symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (DFT-SAPT) by Hesselmann & Korona [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 732–743]. Selected points at the potential energy surface of the endohedral He2@C60 trimer were considered. In contrast to previous theoretical attempts with the DFT/MP2/SCS-MP2/DFT-SAPT methods, our calculations at the DLPNO-CCSD(T) level of theory predicted the He2@C60 trimer to be thermodynamically stable, which is in agreement with experimental observations.

The chemisorption of CO2 on aminated silica has a rich chemistry, and its details are important to research in relation to CO2 capture and catalytic chemistry. In this study, such chemisorption was investigated on aminated and diaminated silica with 1H and 13C solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy under dry and wet conditions. Fast magic-angle spinning (MAS) allowed us to obtain high resolution spectra. Porous silica was modified into a monoaminated version using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTS) and a diaminated one by using 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyltriethoxysilane (AEAPTS). From the corresponding NMR spectra we could conclude that, under dry conditions, CO2 chemisorbed as carbamic acid and carbamate ammonium ion pairs and gave similar spectra for both directly-excited 13C and under cross-polarization (CP) {1H}13C MAS NMR. Under wet conditions, direct excitation and {1H}13C CPMAS NMR showed that carbamate ammonium ion pairs formed along with bicarbonates (HCO3−). For the wet conditions, the 13C and 1H NMR spectra were especially well resolved, and we could detect two different types of carbamate ammonium ion pairs forming on the diaminated silica. We conclude that carbamate ammonium ion pairs and HCO3− moieties can be detected by {1H}13C MAS NMR, at least qualitatively, in addition to the more time consuming direct excitation.

Understanding of structural preferences and dynamics of water at the TiO2–H2O interface is fundamentally impor- tant in the perspective of broad range of TiO2 applications that extend from bio-adsorption for medical devices, photo- catalysis for energy production, to coatings with remarkable self-cleaning and anti-fogging properties. However, current knowledge on these systems under full hydration result almost entirely from modelling rather than direct experimental observations. Surface-sensitive techniques like electron microscopy (EM) or X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) operate under high vacuum, therefore do not provide insights into phenomena underlying the real catalytic and bio-adsorption processes that take place under wet conditions. Herein, atomic-level characterization of TiO2 nanoparticles surface under full hydration was performed by a combination of 1H magic-angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics density functional theory (MD-DFT) simulations. Thanks to partial proton to deuteron exchange and fast MAS, resolved NMR signals from OH/H2O species at the TiO2–H2O interface could be observed and interpreted with chemical shifts calculations performed on system evolution trajectory frames. Presence of the recently debated atmospheric carboxylic acids was confirmed, however, the amount of these was small compared to OH/H2O surface species. Surface protonation and evolution of hydrogen-bonded network are shown to govern the surface chemistry of TiO2 under wet conditions.

Chitosan was deposited on fumed silica without the addition of cross-linkers or activating agents. The chitosan surface layer has a high affinity toward organic molecules, e.g., Acid Orange 8 (AO8) dye, robust to a broad range of simulated conditions (variance with respect to temperature, time, and concentration of solute). Experimental equilibrium data were analyzed by the generalized Langmuir equation taking into consideration the energetic heterogeneity of the adsorption system. The effect of temperature on dye uptake and adsorption rate was studied. According to the calculated thermodynamic functions ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° from the equilibrium data at different temperatures, the adsorption of AO8 onto chitosan–fumed silica composite is exothermic and spontaneous. The studies of temperature effect on adsorption equilibrium show that the maximum adsorption capacity (determined from the Langmuir–Freundlich equation) of synthesized composite toward AO8 is about one-third higher in the case of an isotherm measured at 5 °C than this value obtained for the isotherm measured at 45 °C. The quantitative binding of dye molecules to chitosan coating on the surface of silica was proved by 1H MAS NMR. The deep kinetics study through the application of various theoretical models—the first-order equation, pseudo-first-order equation, second-order equation, pseudo-second-order equation, mixed first, second-order equation, and multiexponential equation—was applied for getting inside the mechanism of AO8 binding to the chitosan coating. Structural characteristics of chitosan-coated silica were obtained from the low-temperature adsorption/desorption isotherms of nitrogen and imaging by scanning electron microscopy. The effects of a synthetic route for polymer coating on thermal stability and the ability to degrade were studied by differential scanning calorimetry.

Perovskite-type oxyhydrides, BaTiO3−xHx, represent a novel class of hydride ion conducting materials of interest for several electrochemical applications, but fundamental questions surrounding the defect chemistry and hydride ion transport mechanism remain unclear. Here we report results from powder X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and density functional theory (DFT) simulations on three metal hydride reduced BaTiO3 samples characterized by the simultaneous presence of hydride ions and oxygen vacancies. The INS spectra are characterized by two predominating bands at around 114 (ω⊥) and 128 (ω∥) meV, assigned as fundamental Ti–H vibrational modes perpendicular and parallel to the Ti–H–Ti bond direction, respectively, and four additional, weaker, bands at around 99 (ω1), 110 (ω2), 137 (ω3) and 145 (ω4) meV that originate from a range of different local structures associated with different configurations of the hydride ions and oxygen vacancies in the materials. Crucially, the combined analyses of INS and DFT data confirm the presence of both nearest and next-nearest neighbouring oxygen vacancies to the hydride ions. This supports previous findings from quasielastic neutron scattering experiments, that the hydride ion transport is governed by jump diffusion dynamics between neighbouring and next-nearest neighbouring hydride ion–oxygen vacancy local structures. Furthermore, the investigation of the momentum transfer dependence of the INS spectrum is used to derive the mean square displacement of the hydride ions, which is shown to be in excellent agreement with the calculations. Analysis of the mean square displacement confirms that the hydrogen vibrational motions are localized in nature and only very weakly affected by the dynamics of the surrounding perovskite structure. This insight motivates efforts to identify alternative host lattices that allow for a less localization of the hydride ions as a route to higher hydride ion conductivities.

The development of smart and sustainable photocatalysts is in high priority for the synthesis of H2O2 because the global demand for H2O2 is sharply rising. Currently, the global market share for H2O2 is around 4 billion US$ and is expected to grow by about 5.2 billion US$ by 2026. Traditional synthesis of H2O2 via the anthraquinone method is associated with the generation of substantial chemical waste as well as the requirement of a high energy input. In this respect, the oxidative transformation of pure water is a sustainable solution to meet the global demand. In fact, several photocatalysts have been developed to achieve this chemistry. However, 97% of the water on our planet is seawater, and it contains 3.0-5.0% of salts. The presence of salts in water deactivates the existing photocatalysts, and therefore, the existing photocatalysts have rarely shown reactivity toward seawater. Considering this, a sustainable heterogeneous photocatalyst, derived from hydrolysis lignin, has been developed, showing an excellent reactivity toward generating H2O2 directly from seawater under air. In fact, in the presence of this catalyst, we have been able to achieve 4085 ?M of H2O2. Expediently, the catalyst has shown longer durability and can be recycled more than five times to generate H2O2 from seawater. Finally, full characterizations of this smart photocatalyst and a detailed mechanism have been proposed on the basis of the experimental evidence and multiscale/level calculations.

Quaternary tantalum-based oxynitrides ATa(O,N)3, with electronic band gaps between 1.8 and 2.4 eV, are promising materials for photochemical water-splitting. The tailoring of their surface properties is a critical aspect to obtain efficient hole extraction. We report on the origin of improved photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation by means of acidic treatment for this class of compounds on the example of cubic CaTaO2N particles. We address the effect of acidic treatment by using complementary physical characterization techniques, such as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), 1H and 14N solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, electron microscopy and electronic band structure calculations at the density functional theory (DFT) level. In combination with photoelectrochemical measurements, solid-state NMR indicates that the restructured surface displays a meaningfully higher concentration of terminating OH groups. Subsequent deposition of a nickel borate (NiBi) catalyst on the acid-treated surface yields a higher percentual upsurge of photocurrent in comparison to pristine CaTaO2N. Our results highlight the application of solid-state NMR spectroscopy for understanding of the semiconductor-catalyst interface in photochemical devices.

Methane has been successfully encapsulated within cages of C60 fullerene, and it is an appropriate model system to study confinement effects. Its chemistry and physics is also relevant for theoretical model descriptions. Here we provided insights into intermolecular interactions and predicted spectroscopic responses of the CH4@C60 complex and compared with results from other methods and with literature data. Local energy decomposition analysis (LED) within the domain-based local pair natural orbital coupled cluster singles, doubles, and perturbative triples (DLPNO-CCSD(T)) framework was used, and an efficient protocol for studies of endohedral complexes of fullerenes is proposed. This approach allowed us to assess energies in relation to electronic and geometric preparation, electrostatics, exchange, and London dispersion for the CH4@C60 endohedral complex. The calculated stabilization energy of CH4 inside the C60 fullerene was −13.5 kcal/mol and its magnitude was significantly larger than the latent heat of evaporation of CH4. Evaluation of vibrational frequencies and polarizabilities of the CH4@C60 complex revealed that the infrared (IR) and Raman bands of the endohedral CH4 were essentially “silent” due to dielectric screening effect of the C60, which acted as a molecular Faraday cage. Absorption spectra in the UV-Vis domain and ionization potentials of the C60 and CH4@C60 were predicted. They were almost identical. The calculated 1H/13C NMR shifts and spin-spin coupling constants were in very good agreement with experimental data. In addition, reference DLPNO-CCSD(T) interaction energies for complexes with noble gases(Ng@C60 ; Ng = He, Ne, Ar, Kr) were calculated. The values were compared with those derived from supermolecular MP2/SCS-MP2 calculations and estimates with London-type formulas by Pyykkö and coworkers [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2010, 12, 6187-6203], and with values derived fromDFT-based symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (DFT SAPT) by Hesselmann & Korona [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2011, 13, 732-743]. Selected points at the potential energy surface of the endohedral He2@C60 trimer were considered. In contrast to previous theoretical attempts with the DFT/MP2/SCS-MP2/DFT-SAPT methods, our calculations at the DLPNO-CCSD(T) level of theory predicted the He2@C60 trimer to be thermodynamically stable, which is in agreement with experimental observations.

Epoxy nanocomposites have demonstrated promising properties for high-voltage insulation applications. An in situ approach to the synthesis of epoxy-SiO2 nanocomposites was employed, where surface-functionalized SiO2 (up to 5 wt.%) is synthesized directly in the epoxy. The dispersion of SiO2 was found to be affected by both the pH and the coupling agent used in the synthesis. Hierarchical clusters of SiO2 (10–60 nm) formed with free-space lengths of 53–105 nm (increasing with pH or SiO2 content), exhibiting both mass and surface-fractal structures. Reducing the amount of coupling agent resulted in an increase in the cluster size (~110 nm) and the free-space length (205 nm). At room temperature, nanocomposites prepared at pH 7 exhibited up to a 4% increase in the real relative permittivity with increasing SiO2 content, whereas those prepared at pH 11 showed up to a 5% decrease with increasing SiO2 content. Above the glass transition, all the materials exhibited low-frequency dispersion effect resulting in electrode polarization, which was amplified in the nanocomposites. Improvements in the dielectric properties were found to be not only dependent on the state of dispersion, but also the structure and morphology of the inorganic nanoparticles. Formation of CO32– and HCO3– species without the participation of the framework-bridging oxygen atoms (−O−) upon chemisorption of CO2 in zeolite |Na12|-A is revealed. The transfer of O and H atoms is very likely to have proceeded via the involvement of residual H2O or −OH groups. A combined study by the solid-state 1H and 13C MAS NMR, quantum chemical calculations, and in situ infrared spectroscopy showed that the chemisorption mainly occurred by the formation of HCO3–. However, at a low surface coverage of physisorbed and acidic CO2, a significant fraction of HCO3– was deprotonated and transformed into CO32–. We expect that a similar chemisorption of CO2 would occur for low-silica zeolites and other basic silicates of interest for capture of CO2 from the gas mixtures.

Metal-free nitrogen-doped carbon is considered as a green functional material, but the structural determination of the atomic positions of nitrogen remains challenging. We recently demonstrated that directly-excited solid state 15N NMR (ssNMR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for the determination of such positions in N-doped carbon at natural 15N isotope abundance. Here we report a green chemistry approach for the synthesis of N-doped carbon using cellulose as a precursor, and a study of the catalytic properties and atomic structures of the related catalyst. N-doped carbon (NH3) was obtained by the oxidation of cellulose with HNO3 followed by ammonolysis at 800 °C. It had a N content of 6.5 wt% and a surface area of 557 m2 g-1, and 15N ssNMR spectroscopy provided evidence for graphitic nitrogen besides regular pyrrolic and pyridinic nitrogen. This structural determination allowed probing the role of graphitic nitrogen in electrocatalytic reactions, such as the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and nitrite reduction reaction. The N-doped carbon catalyst (NH3) showed higher electrocatalytic activities in the OER and HER under alkaline conditions and higher activity for nitrite reduction, as compared with a catalyst prepared by the carbonization of HNO3-treated cellulose in N2. The electrocatalytic selectivity for nitrite reduction of the N-doped carbon catalyst (NH3) was directly related to the graphitic nitrogen functions. Complementary structural analyses by means of 13C and 1H ssNMR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and low-temperature N2 adsorption were performed and provided support to the findings. The results show that directly-excited 15N ssNMR spectroscopy at natural 15N abundance is generally capable of providing information on N-doped carbon materials if relaxation properties are favorable. It is expected that this approach can be applied to a wide range of solids with an intermediate concentration of N atoms.
