We study two moderate earthquakes that occurred offshore the State of Veracruz, in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico, on 29 October 2009 (Mw 5.7) and 4 August 2021 (Mw 4.8). The former was located near the town of Alvarado and latter near the city of Veracruz. The events were well recorded by accelerographs and seismographs at local and regional distances. W-phase regional centroid moment tensor inversion reveals that they had reverse-faulting mechanism, similar to several other earthquakes in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. Of the seven focal mechanisms now available along the southwestern margin, two are strike slip and the rest are of thrust type, suggesting a heterogeneous stress regime. We take advantage of local and regional recordings produced by these two earthquakes to study the characteristics of the ground motion. Source spectra computed at each station separately (without correcting for the site effect), assuming a reasonable geometrical spreading and Q = 141f 0.63, show remarkably high variability due to difference in path and local site effects. The geometric mean apparent source spectrum (source spectrum including site effects) of both earthquakes may be modeled by an ω2 -Brune source model with a stress drop, Δσ, of 40 MPa. These source spectra, along with the application of stochastic method, yield peak ground acceleration (PGA) and velocity (PGV) as a function of distance in general agreement with the observations. Of greater practical importance is the ground motion at sedimentary sites in the city of Veracruz and at the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant (LVNPP) site, especially from a postulated Mw 6.5 earthquake which is a reasonable scenario event for the region. For the city of Veracruz and LVNPP we estimate site effect with respect to the ω2 -Brune source with Δσ of 2 MPa. There is some support for this Δσ. We apply both stochastic and empirical Green’s functions (EGF) techniques in the estimation of the ground motion. The recording of the 2021 earthquake is taken as the EGF, and Δσ of the EGF and the target event are assumed to be the same and equal to 2 MPa. The predicted PGA and PGV at sedimentary sites in the city of Veracruz and LVNPP above the hypocenter (depth = 20 km) from the postulated Mw 6.5 earthquake are 0.2 g and 10 cm/s and 0.18 g and 3 cm/s, respectively. These results are preliminary as they are based on several assumptions.

Forecasting extreme precipitation is one of the basic actions of warning systems in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). With thousands of economic losses and severe damage caused by floods in urban areas, hydrometeorological monitoring is a priority in most countries in the LAC region. The monitoring of convective precipitation, cold fronts, and hurricane tracks are the most demanded technological developments for early warning systems in the region. However, predicting and forecasting the onset time of extreme precipitation is a subject of life-saving scientific research. Developed in 2019, the CRHUDA (Crossing HUmidity, Dew point, and Atmospheric pressure) model provides insight into the onset of precipitation from the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship. With access to a historical database of more than 600 storms, the CRHUDA model provides a prediction with a precision of six to eight hours in advance of storm onset. However, the calibration is complex given the addition of ARMA(p,q)-type models for real-time forecasting. This paper presents the calibration of the joint CRHUDA+ARMA(p,q) model. It is concluded that CRHUDA is significantly more suitable and relevant for the forecast of precipitation and a possible future development for an early warning system (EWS).

Introducción: La intubación difícil se define como la necesidad de 3 o más intentos para la intubación de la tráquea, o más de 10 minutos para conseguirla. Es de vital importancia el detectar a tiempo la presencia de una vía aérea difícil para trazar una estrategia con vistas a lograr la intubación del paciente. Objetivo: Describir el manejo de un paciente portador de una vía aérea difícil que no se pudo intubar y fue necesario el uso de una máscara laríngea para su intervención quirúrgica. Presentación de caso: Paciente de 25 años de edad traído al salón para ser operado de apendicitis aguda, este tenía signos de vía aérea difícil, por lo que se prepararon las condiciones para tratarlo, pero ni aun así se logró intubar, fue necesario poner una máscara laríngea y continuar el resto del transoperatorio. Conclusiones: La vía aérea difícil, en ocasiones ni estando preparados, se puede lograr una intubación, lo que muchas veces constituye un riesgo enorme para el paciente y un verdadero desafío para el anestesiólogo, el cual nunca debe enfrentarse solo a este tipo de situación, debe pedir ayuda oportunamente.

Este artículo presenta una reflexión sobre los resultados de la investigación “El Bogotazo como reescritura discontinua de la memoria”. Se lleva a cabo una exploración archivística de documentos relacionados con los eventos del 9 de abril de 1948 en Bogotá, con el objetivo principal de reconstruir ficcionalmente la memoria de algunas víctimas del Bogotazo. Esta reconstrucción, a partir del método sugerido por Michel Foucault en La arqueología del saber, se apoya en la interpretación de una lista aproximada de los fallecidos registrados, con la cual se brinda un contexto concreto de sus historias individuales en el tejido narrativo. La perspectiva crítica de Santiago Castro-Gómez, reconocido por su análisis genealógico de las relaciones de poder y discursos en América Latina, es fundamental para comprender cómo estas se articulan en la construcción de la memoria histórica. Además, se incorporan elementos de la obra Vivir para contarla, de Gabriel García Márquez, como parte de la reflexión sobre las víctimas, que enriquecen el proceso de recreación ficcional y amplían las posibilidades de comprensión y representación del Bogotazo.

Introducción: En el artículo se describe el apoyo familiar de pacientes bajo control en el Programa de Salud Cardiovascular en establecimientos de atención primaria de salud de la comuna de Río Negro. Materiales y Métodos: Estudio de corte cualitativo, exploratorio-descriptivo. Mixto en cuanto a las técnicas de recolección de información. Con un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia y un análisis basado en el Teoría Fundamentada. Resultados: En la población en estudio, los pacientes en tratamiento por enfermedades cardiovasculares son personas de baja escolaridad, que pertenecen a hogares de menores ingresos y de mayor vulnerabilidad social y que no necesariamente cuentan con apoyo familiar, pero logran adecuados niveles de compensación cardiovascular. La categoría central que emerge del estudio refiere que este tipo de patologías de larga duración traen consigo alteraciones en la evolución del ciclo vital, la estructura y funcionalidad familiar, generando repercusiones en la salud física y psicosocial del o la cuidadora principal. Discusión: Se concluye que el apoyo familiar está relacionado con las creencias, el conocimiento y la respuesta emocional de los familiares frente a las condiciones crónicas cardiovasculares. Por consiguiente, tanto las características sociodemográficas como la funcionalidad familiar son ámbitos relevantes que deben ser incorporados en la atención, el cuidado colaborativo y automanejo de síntomas, tratamiento y cambios en el estilo de vida de los pacientes en control por enfermedades cardiovasculares.

High-fat and high-carbohydrate (HF-HC) diets induce metabolic syndrome via mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress. We have previously shown that this may be prevented by avocado oil, a source of bioactive molecules with antioxidant properties. However, it is unknown if these effects are mediated by the unsaponifiable fraction of avocado oil (UFAO). Thus, we tested if this fraction improves glucose metabolism, bioenergetics and oxidative stress in mitochondria from the kidney and liver of rats fed an HF-HC diet. We found that 12 weeks of an HF-HC diet impaired glucose utilization and increased insulin resistance, which was prevented by UFAO administration. The HF-HC diet decreased respiration, membrane potential and electron transport chain (ETC) function in liver and kidney mitochondria. These mitochondrial dysfunctions were prevented by UFAO intake. Unexpectedly, UFAO increased ROS levels in the mitochondria of control animals and did not decrease them in rats with an HF-HC diet; however, UFAO protects liver and kidney mitochondria from iron-induced oxidative stress. These findings suggest that impairments in glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function by an HF-HC diet may be prevented by UFAO, without decreasing ROS generation but protecting mitochondria from oxidative damage.

A partir del elevado intercambio de bienes y servicios, tan-to en el extranjero como en el contexto nacional, se realiza un esfuerzo para distribuir productos con un servicio de transporte eficaz y estar a la par de la competencia global. Las empresas de logística juegan un papel importante en la prestación de un servicio en las diversas formas de trans-porte, en este documento el proceso desde la recepción y entrega de los productos es por medio de las vías férreas, se presenta una alternativa para la gestión de operaciones desde el control interno operativo con eficacia y efectivi-dad, que incluya por ejemplo: costo, tiempo de entrega y seguridad de la carga, entre otros, lo cual es factible que pueda generar una mejor oferta de servicio para la distri-bución de piedra mármol, por medio del ferrocarril, y poco a poco tratar de llegar a obtener la eficiencia en la gestión operativa de estas empresas

Ante el creciente papel y aceptación de la Inteligencia Artificial en el mundo de las Finanzas, esta investigación propone aplicar técnicas de Aprendizaje Automático en la gestión de carteras de inversión de renta variable abriendo la posibilidad de mejorar el proceso de estructuración de portafolios que generen resultados empíricos óptimos en relación a técnicas tradicionales, como la cartera de Máximo Índice de Sharpe y el Portafolio Igualmente Ponderado. En contraparte a estas técnicas tradicionales, se aplica la Técnica de Clustering Affinity Propagation como la principal para identificar patrones de comportamiento similar entre empresas, complementada con el algoritmo de Graphical Lasso para estimar la estructura de dependencia de los datos y Multi-Dimensional Scaling para mejorar la representación visual de los Clusters. A través de los resultados, se identifica que el portafolio que maximiza las medidas de rentabilidad y riesgo es aquel conformado mediante estas técnicas de Machine Learning. Se concluye que al combinar estas tres técnicas de Aprendizaje Automático, se obtiene una alternativa viable y efectiva en la gestión de carteras de inversión en el mercado de renta variable.

One way to approach the nutritional requirements of native shrimp, necessary to consolidate their culture, is to know their biochemical composition. The effect of feeding two levels of lipids (4 and 12% L) and four levels of proteins (30, 35, 40 and 45% P) in M. tenellum females was evaluated with respect to the biochemical composition of their eggs (EG), larvae (LR), gonad (GO) and hepatopancreas (HP). Total protein (TP), total carbohydrate (TC) and total lipid (TL) were estimated. In EG, L and P levels influence TP and TL; TP increases in diets higher than P35. In LR, there are no differences (p > 0.05) in TP and in TL, only diets L4P40 and L12P30 were different (p < 0.05). In GO, there is no trend in TP differences; in TC there was variation in the range of the data and TL was higher in L4P30 and L4P35. In HP, the diets with L4 obtained the highest TP values (p < 0.05); the L12 diets were higher in TL (p < 0.05). In general, diets with an inclusion of L12 showed the highest TP, TC and TL means, within this lipid level the P30 diet stood out; therefore, it is recommended to use a diet with L12P30 in the formulation of balanced feed for the species.

Currently, the responsible use of antimicrobials in pigs has allowed the continuous development of alternatives to these antimicrobials. In this study, we describe the impact of treatments with two probiotics, one based on live Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and another based on fragmented S. cerevisiae (beta-glucans), that were administered to piglets at birth and at prechallenge with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Thirty-two pigs were divided into four groups of eight animals each. The animals had free access to water and food. The groups were as follows: Group A, untreated negative control; Group B, inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae positive control; Group C, first treated with disintegrated S. cerevisiae (disintegrated Sc) and inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae; and Group D, treated with live S. cerevisiae yeast (live Sc) and inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae. In a previous study, we found that on Days 1 and 21 of blood sampling, nine proinflammatory cytokines were secreted, and an increase in their secretion occurred for only five of them: TNF-α, INF-α, INF-γ, IL-10, and IL-12 p40. The results of the clinical evolution, the degree of pneumonic lesions, and the productive parameters of treated Groups C and D suggest that S. cerevisiae has an immunomodulatory effect in chronic proliferative M. hyopneumoniae pneumonia characterized by delayed hypersensitivity, which depends on the alteration or modulation of the respiratory immune response. The data presented in this study showed that S. cerevisiae contributed to the innate resistance of infected pigs.

La asesoría curricular es un ejercicio mediante el cual un tutor calificado orienta a un estudiante en la selección de las asignaturas que cursará en algún periodo lectivo. Este ejercicio puede ser un desafío cuando se consideran las necesidades y preferencias de cada estudiante, por lo que en este trabajo se propone el diseño de un sistema de recomendaciones como apoyo a la asesoría curricular basado en la solución de un problema de optimización multiobjetivo. Los resultados de los experimentos mostraron que el sistema propuesto responde adecuadamente a las necesidades de estudiantes de diferentes programas educativos de la Universidad del Caribe, por lo que representa una opción pertinente para apoyar el trabajo de sus tutores académicos.

Host cell functions that participate in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of drugs against intracellular pathogen infections are critical for drug efficacy. In this study, we investigated whether macrophage mechanisms of xenobiotic detoxification contribute to the elimination of intracellular Leishmania upon exposure to pentavalent antimonials (SbV). Primary macrophages from patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) (n=6) were exposed ex vivo to L. V. panamensis infection and SbV, and transcriptomes were generated. Seven metallothionein (MT) genes, potent scavengers of heavy metals and central elements of the mammalian cell machinery for xenobiotic detoxification, were within the top 20 up-regulated genes. To functionally validate the participation of MTs in drug-mediated killing of intracellular Leishmania, tandem knockdown (KD) of MT2-A and MT1-E, MT1-F, and MT1-X was performed using a pan-MT shRNA approach in THP-1 cells. Parasite survival was unaffected in tandem-KD cells, as a consequence of strong transcriptional upregulation of MTs by infection and SbV, overcoming the KD effect. Gene silencing of the metal transcription factor-1 (MTF-1) abrogated expression of MT1 and MT2-A genes, but not ZnT-1. Upon exposure to SbV, intracellular survival of Leishmania in MTF-1KD cells was significantly enhanced. Results from this study highlight the participation of macrophage MTs in Sb-dependent parasite killing.

Perú es el segundo país en el mundo, receptor de migrantes de Venezuela con aproximadamente 1,2 millones de personas. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la situación socioeconómica de personas migrantes de Venezuela que residen en Lima Metropolitana en el contexto de la tercera ola de la pandemia de COVID-19. Se desarrolló un estudio cuantitativo y descriptivo a través de encuestas ultisectoriales vía telefónica. Los principales resultados fueron: las familias están integradas entre una a nueve personas; el 59% viven en condiciones de hacinamiento; el ingreso familiar mensual es de S/ 1067,3 (€ 246,6); el gasto mensual en alimentos es de S/ 470,9 (€ 108,80) el porcentaje de familias con inseguridad alimentaria es de 70,5; encontrándose 32,2% en inseguridad alimentaria severa y el empleo es principalmente informal. Al comparar los resultados con la situación prepandemia, se observa que la pandemia de la COVID-19 tiene un impacto negativo en esta población, precarizando las viviendas que habitan, reduciendo sus ingresos económicos y empeorando las estrategias de afrontamiento para conseguir alimentos. En este contexto, se hacen necesarias intervenciones orientadas a mejorar el empleo, acceso a una vivienda segura y también al acceso y consumo de alimentos en especial para los grupos etarios más vulnerables.

Abstract Background Posterior quadrant epilepsy (PCE) is a type of focal epilepsy that originates in the parietal lobe, occipital lobe, and the parietal-occipital border of the temporal lobe, or in any combination of these regions. PCE has a low incidence, but it can cause a great burden in disability-adjusted life years. In this retrospective cohort, patients of all ages with a diagnosis of PCE between 2006 and 2019 were evaluated in a referral center in Bogotá, Colombia. A descriptive analysis of demographic data, clinical history, imaging findings, type of surgery, histopathological diagnosis, outcome, and follow-up was performed using the Engel scale. Methods This study included refractory PCE patients of all ages who were evaluated by the epilepsy surgery group of the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio from 2006 to 2019. Clinical, imaging and surgical variables were obtained from the medical records and analyzed. Results Thirteen patients were included in the study, including 8 males and 5 females. The mean age of diagnosis was 8.8 years, while the mean age of surgery was 25 years. The most frequent clinical finding was intellectual disability. The most common findings on magnetic resonance imaging were encephalomalacia and gliosis. In 61.5% of the patients, the lateralization of video-EEG matched with brain magnetic resonance imaging alteration. The most frequent types of surgery performed were lobectomies, lesionectomies and cortical resections. Seizure-freedom was achieved in approximately one third of the patients; however, more than half of the patients were free of disabling seizures or had significant improvement after surgery. Conclusions PCE surgery is scarcely performed worldwide, therefore the effectiveness and outcomes are quite variable in the reported literature. In this study, we show that patients with PCE can obtain great benefits in terms of reduction of seizures with a low risk of surgical complications, encouraging the use of this type of procedure in carefully selected patients.

Introducción. Algunas especies de trips del género Frankliniella (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) son de importancia cuarentenaria en diversos cultivos en la región Centroamericana, sin embargo, diversas especies de dicho género han sido reportadas como parte de la fauna visitadora de la floración, no solo en plantas con producción agrícola. Objetivo. Registrar las especies de Frankliniella asociadas a los árboles de aguacate y sus arvenses, en la región central de Costa Rica y presentar una clave para la identificación de dichos trips. Materiales y métodos. Los muestreos se realizaron cada dos meses en tres diferentes zonas en la región central de Costa Rica, durante los años 2019 y 2021. Los trips del aguacate y de las plantas arvenses se recolectaron mediante el golpe de ramas, estos fueron preparados para su visualización en un microscopio convencional de luz e identificados por medio de su morfología. Resultados. Se identificaron veintidós especies de Frankliniella, dieciocho de ellas se asociaron a arvenses que crecen en los mismos cultivares, mientras que cinco especies se asociaron directamente al follaje y flor del árbol de aguacate. Conclusión. En la región central de Costa Rica, del género Frankliniella se encontraron tres especies: F. alonso, F. doris y F. nita sobre el árbol de aguacate durante la etapa de floración, una sola especie del follaje: F. sandovalensis y una sola especie tanto en el follaje como en la floración: F. cephalica.

Introducción. Diversas técnicas de modelación se han utilizado para analizar experimentos con medidas repetidas en el tiempo; no obstante, algunas de estas no son pertinentes en la actualidad. Objetivo. Comparar cuatro estrategias de análisis que se usan para analizar experimentos agrícolas con evaluaciones a través del tiempo. Materiales y métodos. Se utilizaron datos de un experimento donde se evaluó el efecto de distintas fuentes de fertilizante nitrogenado sobre el contenido de clorofila en un pasto forrajero a diferentes edades de cosecha. Estos datos se analizaron con cuatro estrategias: índice de área bajo la curva (IABC), análisis de la varianza multivariado (MANOVA), efecto aleatorio de la unidad experimental y modelación de la correlación temporal. Las dos últimas estrategias se realizaron bajo la teoría de modelos lineales mixtos; en estas se ajustaron diferentes modelos, todos con la misma estructura de efectos fijos, pero con diferentes efectos aleatorios, estructura de correlación residual o estructura de varianza residual. Mediante criterios de verosimilitud penalizada [criterio de información de Akaike (AIC) y criterio de información Bayesiano (BIC)] se eligió el modelo de mejor ajuste, con este se realizaron inferencias acerca de las medias de los efectos fijos que fueron significativos y se comparó con los resultados obtenidos de las estrategias IABC y MANOVA. Resultados. El modelo lineal mixto de mejor ajuste tuvo una estructura de correlación de simetría compuesta y varianza heterocedástica. Este modelo permitió analizar la interacción tratamiento × tiempo; por el contrario, tanto el MANOVA como el IABC, no permitieron analizar las tendencias temporales de los tratamientos. Conclusión. El modelo lineal mixto de mejor ajuste posibilitó seleccionar el mejor tratamiento en función del tiempo de evaluación. Por el contrario, tanto el MANOVA como el IABC condujeron a la selección de tratamientos que no fueron los mejores en todos los tiempos de evaluación.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la maduración gonadal, calidad de los huevos y larvas de hembras de Macrobrachium tenellum alimentadas con dietas con diferentes niveles de proteínas y lípidos, utilizando indicadores morfológicos y pruebas de estrés. Se capturaron reproductores de M. tenellum en el río Ameca, Jalisco-Nayarit. Se probaron ocho dietas experimentales con cuatro niveles de proteína (30, 35, 40 y 45% P) y dos niveles de lípidos (4 y 12% L), se evaluó la fecundidad (FC), esfuerzo reproductivo (ER), la tasa de eclosión (TE), índice gonadosomático (IGS), índice hepatosomático (IHS), y pruebas de estrés en larvas: supervivencia en inanición y tolerancia a salinidad alta (45 ups). Los resultados muestran que las interacciones entre proteínas y lípidos tienen efectos diferentes en la calidad de huevos y las pruebas de estrés en larvas. La dieta que presentó el promedio más alto en FC, ER y TE fue P30L12, a su vez, la dieta P30L4 obtuvo los promedios más bajos en dichos parámetros. Los IGS e IHS fueron independientes de los tratamientos dietarios y no se encontraron diferencias haciendo comparaciones entre ambos índices. La dieta P30L4 no es la mejor opción para reproductoras de la especie y se recomienda la dieta P35L4 ya que garantiza una calidad de huevos y larvas similar a la mayoría de las dietas evaluadas.

Background: Variations of the anterior cerebral artery complex are very common, however an infraoptic course of the A1 is very rare. First case was described by Robinson in 1959 during an anatomic dissection. We present the case of a skull base meningioma associated with this vascular variation. Preoperative recognition of the arterial anomaly is important in planning the microsurgical treatment of skull base lesions. Case description: We present the case of a patient with a tuberculum Sellae meningioma associated with an infra optic origin of the anterior cerebral artery. Implications and possible embryological explanations are discussed. Conclusions: While there are several numbers of variations of the course of the anterior cerebral artery, it is not so often described the presence of an infraoptic course. It is important to be aware of this variation due to its relevance during microsurgical procedures.

In the present work, the effect of the Flash Vacuum Expansion (FVE) process on the recovery of total phenolic content (TPC) from entire coffee peel was evaluated. The resulting extracts were microencapsulated by spray drying using maltodextrin (MD10) and arabic gum (GA). The FVE increased TPC by 20.97% in the ethanolic extracts. The use of MD10 allowed obtention of smaller, less hygroscopic particles, with better color and flow properties as well as a higher concentration of TPC. Both powders were considered microbiologically stable based on humidity and water activity.

This paper’s main aim was to explain the process of characterising the structural over-strength factor (R), seismic behaviour factor (Q), and the effective elastic stiffness, Keff, of cantilever-reinforced concrete (RC) urban bridge columns with solid circular cross-sections for use in seismic design under the Serviceability Limit State (SLS). Similarly, mathematical models have been proposed to determine the average values of effective stiffness and seismic response modification factors suggested for cantilever-reinforced concrete bridge columns at SLS. This is because multiple design codes stipulate that cantilever RC bridge columns must meet the SLS requirements. Therefore, to comply, the lateral displacement ductility demand must not exceed unity after a moderate or small earthquake. While the behaviour of the materials remains in the elastic range, this performance criterion can be conservative. If the materials undergo small deformations, the slight damage can be quickly repaired to meet the SLS.

This paper aims to assess the structural overstrength (R), seismic behaviour factor (Q), and effective inertia factor (keff), of which the effective elastic stiffness (Keff) is a function, i.e., Keff (keff), of reinforced concrete (RC) cantilever columns with solid circular sections in urban bridges. The R and Q factors proposed in the design codes have been based mainly on an empirical basis. However, some studies suggest that, in the case of RC bridge columns, both factors are determined by a range of geometric and structural parameters. These results indicate that equations incorporating the main geometric and structural parameters of the columns, rather than the use of fixed values, are the appropriate method for estimating the values of R, Q and keff for the columns. Therefore, the results confirm the relation between R, Q and keff with the mechanical properties of the concrete, the aspect ratio length–depth, the axial load–strength ratio of a column, as well as its longitudinal reinforcement steel ratio. Finally, the research proposes models for estimating R, Q and keff that are recommended for the collapse prevention limit state of cantilevered circular columns of RC bridges.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by lipid accumulation in hepatocytes, and in advanced stages, by inflammation and fibrosis. Excessive ROS production due to mitochondrial dysfunction contributes to NAFLD development, making the decrease in mitochondrial ROS production an emerging target to alleviate NAFLD. Previously, we have shown that avocado oil, a source of several bioactive compounds with antioxidant effects, decreases oxidative stress by improving the function of the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) and decreasing ROS levels in mitochondria of diabetic and hypertensive rats. Therefore, we tested in this work whether avocado oil alleviates NAFLD by attenuating mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and inflammation. NAFLD was induced in rats by a high fat—high fructose (HF) diet administered for six (HF6) or twelve (HF12) weeks. Hepatic steatosis, hypertrophy and inflammation were detected in both the HF6 and HF12 groups. Hyperglycemia was observed only in the HF12 group. The HF6 and HF12 groups displayed dyslipidemia, impairments in mitochondrial respiration, complex III activity, and electron transfer in cytochromes in the complex III. This led to an increase in the levels of ROS and lipid peroxidation. The substitution of the HF6 diet by standard chow and avocado oil for 6 weeks (HF6+AVO + D), or supplementation of the HF12 diet with avocado oil (HF12 + AVO), ameliorated NAFLD, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, and counteracted mitochondrial dysfunctions and oxidative stress. The substitution of the HF6 diet by standard chow without avocado oil did not correct many of these abnormalities, confirming that the removal of the HF diet is not enough to counteract NAFLD and mitochondrial dysfunction. In summary, avocado oil decreases NAFLD by improving mitochondrial function, oxidative stress, and inflammation.

Introduction: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of ulcerated lesions. The etiology is unknown but apparently relates to immunological factors. The authors report a case of pyoderma gangrenosum in the postoperative period of a reduction mammoplasty, treatment, and the importance of early diagnosis to obtain a good aesthetic result. Methods: This is an 18-year-old patient who developed pyoderma gangrenosum after a reduction mammoplasty. The initial symptoms were the formation of violet blisters and ulcerated lesions in both breasts. The disease was suspected, and the patient was promptly treated with prednisolone. Cultures, biopsies and blood tests were performed. Hyperbaric therapy and nutritional support were performed. Daily dressings with epidermal growth factors were performed. After 60 days of follow-up, it was possible to achieve adequate wound healing and good aesthetic results. Results: Early diagnosis associated with systemic immunosuppressive therapy and rigorous local care were fundamental for disease stabilization. The association with hyperbaric therapy and nutritional support contributed to the lesion's epithelialization and the clinical picture control. The approximation of the wound edges with subdermal suture and the subsequent intradermal suture was possible due to the recovery of the dermis and stabilization of the disease. Conclusion: Early diagnosis of pyoderma gangrenosum is essential to achieve stabilization of the disease. It is possible to achieve good aesthetic results based on four elements: early systemic corticosteroids, daily local dressings with epidermal growth factor, nutritional support, and hyperbaric therapy.

Un pez nativo cada vez más estudiado en Latinoamérica es el Dormitator latifrons, pero se desconoce el efecto de altas densidades de siembra en su fisiología. El objetivo fue determinar el efecto de diferentes densidades de siembra en el crecimiento y parámetros sanguíneos. Se utilizaron organismos silvestres aclimatados al cautiverio, alimentados al 4% de biomasa total durante 60 días. Se registró peso y longitud inicial y final, determinando índices de crecimiento y supervivencia. Al final del experimento se tomó una muestra de sangre al total de organismos para evaluar parámetros sanguíneos No se encontraron diferencias en el crecimiento y supervivencia entre las diferentes densidades. Los parámetros sanguíneos no fueron afectados por la densidad, a excepción del estallido respiratorio, todos se encuentran entre los rangos de referencia de buena salud para peces. La especie no presentó señales de estrés o respuesta inmune adversa asociada al incremento de la densidad de cultivo.

The understanding of the dynamical behavior of seismic phenomena is currently an open problem, mainly because seismic series can be considered to be produced by phenomena exhibiting dynamic phase transitions; that is, with some complexity. For this purpose, the Middle America Trench in central Mexico is considered a natural laboratory for examining subduction because of its heterogenous natural structure. In this study, the Visibility Graph method was applied to study the seismic activity of three regions within the Cocos plate: the Tehuantepec Isthmus, the Flat slab and Michoacan, each one with a different level of seismicity. The method maps time series into graphs, and it is possible to connect the topological properties of the graph with the dynamical features underlying the time series. The seismicity analyzed was monitored in the three areas studied between 2010 and 2022. At the Flat Slab and Tehuantepec Isthmus, two intense earthquakes occurred on 7 and 19 September 2017, respectively, and, on 19 September 2022, another one occurred at Michoacan. The aim of this study was to determine the dynamical features and the possible differences between the three areas by applying the following method. First, the time evolution of the a- and b-values in the Gutenberg–Richter law was analyzed, followed by the relationship between the seismic properties and topological features using the VG method, the k–M slope and the characterization of the temporal correlations from the γ-exponent of the power law distribution, P(k) ∼ k−γ, and its relationship with the Hurst parameter, which allowed us to identify the correlation and persistence of each zone.
