2. Political Theory and Borges’s Work
- Author

- Abstract
Many of Borges’s stories, essays, and poems find inspiration in the fields of ideas, institutions, and events dealing with the organization and governing of society. Some philosophical questions will be used here as a lens to interpret Borges’s literary treatment of the political: what should a good political order be, and how is it preserved? What may be desirable political standards or ideals? Are they valid universally? The texts being analyzed show a particular concern with free political orders and the threats and challenges they undergo. This chapter also touches on Borges’s approach to the wars of conquest, revolution, the spirit of patriotism, and the spread of nationalism and populism.

Abstract: The theology of Juan Carlos Scannone and the theory of Ernesto Laclau conceive the people as the main unit of analysis and the protagonist of political life. In their vision, the people are oppressed by certain social sectors and by global capitalism. The evangelical task in Scannone and the political project in Laclau invoke the need to liberate the people from their oppressors. At the institutional level, Scannone defends a model of a self-organized people, and Laclau proposes to build a populist hegemony under the command of a leader. This work offers a comparative reading of their writings from a theoretical-political angle: the first part summarizes the historical and intellectual roots, and the second part addresses the methodology used, the political subjects, the vision of justice and institutions, and their critiques of Marxism and Liberalism.

Abstract: What was the influence of Antonio Gramsci on the thought of political philosopher Ernesto Laclau? In his first texts there are no direct references to the work of Gramsci; later on, the citations and analysis refer mainly to other interpreters’; in a third stage, the Italian author appears linked to the notions of hegemony, people and leadership. We posit that Laclau was not a pioneer nor a systematic reader of Gramsci, although he adopted and expanded on his ideas in philosophical-political reflections on socialism and populism.

- Abstract
This book seeks to fill a double lacuna in Borges scholarship. For one, this scholarship has been largely developed through the lens of literary and cultural studies, and not by political theorists who bring a distinct disciplinary perspective into the reading of literary works. Secondly, mainstream interpreters have overlooked or have not analyzed enough Borges's political sympathies. This book doesnot evaluate if these sympathies are truthful to political and historical facts or philosophical theories; rather, she shows in which aspects and around which topics Borges finds inspiration and gives literary form to the political. His texts abound with concepts and events such as liberty, individuality, war, and revolution, and they deal with topics such as the legitimacy of authority, the limits of reason, and the principle of representation, among others. This book also addresses Borges's democratic sensitivity and his critique of populism and militarism as related to salient national and global historical events that inspired his works. Above all, it calls attention to Borges's belief in the pre-eminence of individual liberty, his rejection of political oppression, and his warning against civic indifference brought about by an isolated individualism. This book may be of interest to students and professors of politics, philosophy and literature. It may also interest literary critics and readers who want to approach Borges's works with a political rather than a literary or a cultural lens.
