Search

3C84 is a nearby radio source with a complex total intensity structure, showing linear polarisation and spectral patterns. A detailed investigation of the central engine region necessitates the use of VLBI above the hitherto available maximum frequency of 86GHz. Using ultrahigh resolution VLBI observations at the highest available frequency of 228GHz, we aim to directly detect compact structures and understand the physical conditions in the compact region of 3C84. We used EHT 228GHz observations and, given the limited (u,v)-coverage, applied geometric model fitting to the data. We also employed quasi-simultaneously observed, multi-frequency VLBI data for the source in order to carry out a comprehensive analysis of the core structure. We report the detection of a highly ordered, strong magnetic field around the central, SMBH of 3C84. The brightness temperature analysis suggests that the system is in equipartition. We determined a turnover frequency of $\nu_m=(113\pm4)$GHz, a corresponding synchrotron self-absorbed magnetic field of $B_{SSA}=(2.9\pm1.6)$G, and an equipartition magnetic field of $B_{eq}=(5.2\pm0.6)$G. Three components are resolved with the highest fractional polarisation detected for this object ($m_\textrm{net}=(17.0\pm3.9)$%). The positions of the components are compatible with those seen in low-frequency VLBI observations since 2017-2018. We report a steeply negative slope of the spectrum at 228GHz. We used these findings to test models of jet formation, propagation, and Faraday rotation in 3C84. The findings of our investigation into different flow geometries and black hole spins support an advection-dominated accretion flow in a magnetically arrested state around a rapidly rotating supermassive black hole as a model of the jet-launching system in the core of 3C84. Realistic synthetic observations of theoretical source models are essential for our understanding of real observational data. In using synthetic data, one can verify the extent to which source parameters can be recovered and evaluate how various data corruption effects can be calibrated. These studies are important when proposing observations of new sources, in the characterization of the capabilities of new or upgraded instruments, and when verifying model-based theoretical predictions in a comparison with observational data. We present the SYnthetic Measurement creator for long Baseline Arrays (SYMBA), a novel synthetic data generation pipeline for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations. SYMBA takes into account several realistic atmospheric, instrumental, and calibration effects. We used SYMBA to create synthetic observations for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a mm VLBI array, which has recently captured the first image of a black hole shadow. After testing SYMBA with simple source and corruption models, we study the importance of including all corruption and calibration effects. Based on two example general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics (GRMHD) model images of M87, we performed case studies to assess the attainable image quality with the current and future EHT array for different weather conditions. The results show that the effects of atmospheric and instrumental corruptions on the measured visibilities are significant. Despite these effects, we demonstrate how the overall structure of the input models can be recovered robustly after performing calibration steps. With the planned addition of new stations to the EHT array, images could be reconstructed with higher angular resolution and dynamic range. The Atacama Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Phasing Project (APP) has developed and deployed the hardware and software necessary to coherently sum the signals of individual ALMA antennas and record the aggregate sum in Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) Data Exchange Format. These beamforming capabilities allow the ALMA array to collectively function as the equivalent of a single large aperture and participate in global VLBI arrays. The inclusion of phased ALMA in current VLBI networks operating at (sub)millimeter wavelengths provides an order of magnitude improvement in sensitivity, as well as enhancements in u-v coverage and north-south angular resolution. The availability of a phased ALMA enables a wide range of new ultra-high angular resolution science applications, including the resolution of supermassive black holes on event horizon scales and studies of the launch and collimation of astrophysical jets. It also provides a high-sensitivity aperture that may be used for investigations such as pulsar searches at high frequencies. High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of relativistic jets are essential to constrain fundamental parameters of jet formation models. At a distance of 249 Mpc, Cygnus A is a unique target for such studies, being the only Fanaroff-Riley Class II radio galaxy for which a detailed sub-parsec scale imaging of the base of both jet and counter-jet can be obtained. Observing at millimeter wavelengths unveils those regions which appear self-absorbed at longer wavelengths and enables an extremely sharp view towards the nucleus to be obtained. We performed 7 mm Global VLBI observations, achieving ultra-high resolution imaging on scales down to 90 $\mu$as. This resolution corresponds to a linear scale of only ${\sim}$400 Schwarzschild radii (for $M_{\mathrm{BH}}=2.5 \times 10^9 M_{\odot}$). We studied the kinematic properties of the main emission features of the two-sided flow and probed its transverse structure through a pixel-based analysis. We suggest that a fast and a slow layer, with different acceleration gradients, exist in the flow. The extension of the acceleration region is large (${\sim} 10^4 R_{\mathrm{S}}$), indicating that the jet is magnetically-driven. The limb brightening of both jet and counter-jet and their large opening angles ($\phi_\mathrm{J}{\sim} 10^{\circ}$) strongly favor a spine-sheath structure. In the acceleration zone, the flow has a parabolic shape ($r\propto z^{0.55\pm 0.07}$). The acceleration gradients and the collimation profile are consistent with the expectations for a jet in "equilibrium'' (Lyubarsky 2009), achieved in the presence of a mild gradient of the external pressure ($p\propto z^{-k}, k\leq2$).}, Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. We report about a 230 GHz very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) fringe finder observation of blazar 3C 279 with the APEX telescope in Chile, the phased submillimeter array (SMA), and the SMT of the Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO). We installed VLBI equipment and measured the APEX station position to 1 cm accuracy (1 sigma). We then observed 3C 279 on 2012 May 7 in a 5 hour 230 GHz VLBI track with baseline lengths of 2800 M$\lambda$ to 7200 M$\lambda$ and a finest fringe spacing of 28.6 micro-arcseconds. Fringes were detected on all baselines with SNRs of 12 to 55 in 420 s. The correlated flux density on the longest baseline was ~0.3 Jy/beam, out of a total flux density of 19.8 Jy. Visibility data suggest an emission region <38 uas in size, and at least two components, possibly polarized. We find a lower limit of the brightness temperature of the inner jet region of about 10^10 K. Lastly, we find an upper limit of 20% on the linear polarization fraction at a fringe spacing of ~38 uas. With APEX the angular resolution of 230 GHz VLBI improves to 28.6 uas. This allows one to resolve the last-photon ring around the Galactic Center black hole event horizon, expected to be 40 uas in diameter, and probe radio jet launching at unprecedented resolution, down to a few gravitational radii in galaxies like M 87. To probe the structure in the inner parsecs of 3C 279 in detail, follow-up observations with APEX and five other mm-VLBI stations have been conducted (March 2013) and are being analyzed., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

The Atacama Large mm-submm Array (ALMA) is, by far, the most sensitive mm/submm telescope in the World. The ALMA Phasing Project (APP) will allow us to phase-up all the ALMA antennas and use them as one single VLBI station. This will be a key component of the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), a Global VLBI array at millimeter wavelengths. A problem in the APP is the calibration and conversion of the polarization channels. Most VLBI stations record their signals in a circular basis, but the ALMA receivers record in a linear basis. The strategy that will be followed in the phased-ALMA VLBI observations will be to correlate in "mixed" basis (i.e., linear versus circular) and convert the visibilities to a pure circular basis after the correlation. We have developed an algorithm to perform such a polarization conversion of the VLBI visibilities. In these proceedings, we present the basics of the PolConvert algorithm and discuss on the polarization conversion in the general case were single dishes (besides phased arrays) record with linear receivers in VLBI observations. We started a follow-up investigation of the Deep X-ray Radio Blazar Survey objects with declination >-10 deg. We undertook a survey with the EVN at 5GHz to make the first images of a complete sample of weak blazars, aiming at a comparison between high- and low-power samples of blazars. All of the 87 sources observed were detected. Point-like sources are found in 39 cases, and 48 show core-jet structure. According to the spectral indices previously obtained, 58 sources show a flat spectral index, and 29 sources show a steep spectrum or a spectrum peaking at a frequency around 1-2 GHz. Adding to the DXRBS objects we observed those already observed with ATCA in the southern sky, we found that 14 blazars and a SSRQ, are associated to gamma-ray emitters. We found that 56 sources can be considered blazars. We also detected 2 flat spectrum NLRGs. About 50% of the blazars associated to a gamma-ray object are BL Lacs, confirming that they are more likely detected among blazars gamma-emitters. We confirm the correlation found between the source core flux density and the gamma-ray photon fluxes down to fainter flux densities. We also found that weak blazars are also weaker gamma-ray emitters compared to bright blazars. Twenty-two sources are SSRQs or CSSs, and 7 are GPSs. The available X-ray ROSAT observations allow us to suggest that CSS and GPS quasars are not obscured by large column of cold gas surrounding the nuclei. DiFX is a correlator for VLBI data based on the FX architecture (first Fourier transform and then cross-multiply). DiFX is a free licensed software written in C++, developed and maintened by an international group of programmers. A new DiFX version (dra) has been developed at Max-Planck-Institut f\"ur Radioastronomie (MPIfR), in order to manage the correlation of a space-based antenna with ground stations. Global VLBI imaging at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelength overcomes the opacity barrier of synchrotron self-absorption in AGN and opens the direct view into sub-pc scale regions not accessible before. Since AGN variability is more pronounced at short millimeter wavelength, mm-VLBI can reveal structural changes in very early stages after outbursts. When combined with observations at longer wavelength, global 3mm and 1mm VLBI adds very detailed information. This helps to determine fundamental physical properties at the jet base, and in the vicinity of super-massive black holes at the center of AGN. Here we present new results from multi-frequency mm-VLBI imaging of OJ287 during a major outburst. We also report on a successful 1.3mm VLBI experiment with the APEX telescope in Chile. This observation sets a new record in angular resolution. For Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), the fringe spacing is extremely narrow compared to the field of view imposed by the primary beam of each element. This means that an extremely large number of resolution units can potentially be imaged from a single observation. We implement and test a technique for efficiently and accurately imaging large VLBI datasets. The DiFX software correlator is used to generate a dataset with extremely high time and frequency resolution. This large dataset is then transformed and averaged multiple times to generate many smaller datasets, each with a phase centre located at a different area of interest. Results of an 8.4 GHz four-station VLBI observation of a field containing multiple sources are presented. Observations of the calibrator 3C345 were used for preliminary tests of accuracy of the shifting algorithm. A high level of accuracy was achieved, making the method suitable even for the most demanding astrometric VLBI observations. One target source (1320+299A) was detected and was used as a phase-reference calibrator in searching for further detections. An image containing 13 billion pixels was constructed by independently imaging 782 visibility datasets covering the entire primary beam of the array. We report the development of a semi-automatic pipeline for the calibration of 86 GHz full-polarization observations performed with the Global Millimeter-VLBI array (GMVA) and describe the calibration strategy followed in the data reduction. Our calibration pipeline involves non-standard procedures, since VLBI polarimetry at frequencies above 43 GHz is not yet well established. We also present, for the first time, a full-polarization global-VLBI image at 86 GHz (source 3C 345), as an example of the final product of our calibration pipeline, and discuss the effect of instrumental limitations on the fidelity of the polarization images. Our calibration strategy is not exclusive for the GMVA, and could be applied on other VLBI arrays at millimeter wavelengths. Software correlation, where a correlation algorithm written in a high-level language such as C++ is run on commodity computer hardware, has become increasingly attractive for small to medium sized and/or bandwidth constrained radio interferometers. In particular, many long baseline arrays (which typically have fewer than 20 elements and are restricted in observing bandwidth by costly recording hardware and media) have utilized software correlators for rapid, cost-effective correlator upgrades to allow compatibility with new, wider bandwidth recording systems and improve correlator flexibility. The DiFX correlator, made publicly available in 2007, has been a popular choice in such upgrades and is now used for production correlation by a number of observatories and research groups worldwide. Here we describe the evolution in the capabilities of the DiFX correlator over the past three years, including a number of new capabilities, substantial performance improvements, and a large amount of supporting infrastructure to ease use of the code. New capabilities include the ability to correlate a large number of phase centers in a single correlation pass, the extraction of phase calibration tones, correlation of disparate but overlapping sub-bands, the production of rapidly sampled filterbank and kurtosis data at minimal cost, and many more. The latest version of the code is at least 15% faster than the original, and in certain situations many times this value. We discuss the present performance and the future perspectives of VLBI in the 3 mm to 0.85 mm observing bands (so called mm-VLBI). The availability of new telescopes and the recent technical development towards larger observing bandwidth and higher data-rates now allow to image with 3mm-VLBI hundreds of sources with high dynamic range. As an example we show new images of the jets of Cygnus A. At 1.3 mm, pilot VLBI studies have proven detectability of the brightest AGN, and the existence of ultra-compact regions therein. In the next few years global VLBI imaging will be established also at 1.3 mm and 0.85 mm wavelength. With an angular resolution in the 10-20 micro-arcsecond range, future 1.3 mm- and 0.8 mm VLBI will be an extraordinarily powerful astronomical observing method, allowing to image the enigmatic `central engines' and the foot-points of AGN-jets in greater detail than ever possible before. A sufficiently large number of telescopes is a prerequisite for global aperture synthesis imaging. Therefore a strong effort is needed to make more telescopes available for VLBI at short millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. In this context, the further VLBI upgrade of both IRAM telescopes and the outfit of the APEX telescope in Chile, in preparation for later mm-/sub-mm VLBI with ALMA, is of high scientific importance. With a sufficiently large mm-VLBI network, the micro-arcsecond scale imaging of the post-Newtonian emission zone around the event horizon/ergosphere of nearby super-massive Black Holes (such as e.g. Sgr A*, M87, ...) should become possible within the next few years., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. Our previous studies revealed a good kinematic model for the jet of Cygnus A, but the counter-jet speed is still not well constrained. The central engine and part of the counter-jet of Cyg A are likely to be obscured by free-free absorbing material, presumably a thick torus. At mm-wavelengths, the absorber becomes optically thin, which provides a more detailed view into the inner nuclear region. Knowing the speed of jet and counter-jet and their flux density ratio allows to determine the jet Lorentz factors and orientation. Therefore we started to monitor Cyg A with global VLBI at 43GHz in Oct. 2007. Our first epoch reveals a previously unseen gap between both jets. This could be either a sign for a new counter-jet component that is slowly separating or we start to see the very inner acceleration region of the jet which is not efficiently radiating at radio wavelengths. Further more the image shows transversely resolved jet structures at distances beyond ~0.5pc which facilitate more detailed investigations addressing jet stratification. NRAO 150 -a compact and bright radio to mm source showing core/jet structure- has been recently identified as a quasar at redshift z=1.52 through a near-IR spectral observation. To study the jet kinematics on the smallest accessible scales and to compute the first estimates of its basic physical properties, we have analysed the ultra-high-resolution images from a new monitoring program at 86 GHz and 43 GHz with the GMVA and the VLBA, respectively. An additional archival and calibration VLBA data set, covering from 1997 to 2007, has been used. Our data shows an extreme projected counter-clock-wise jet position angle swing at an angular rate of up to ~11 deg./yr within the inner ~31 pc of the jet, which is associated with a non-ballistic superluminal motion of the jet within this region. The results suggest that the magnetic field could play an important role in the dynamics of the jet in NRAO 150, which is supported by the large values of the magnetic field strength obtained from our first estimates. We present and discuss new result from mm-VLBI observations of M87 and SgrA*, using the Global mm-VLBI array (GMVA). New 3mm-VLBI images of the inner jet of M87 are presented, showing details with a spatial resolution down to 15 Schwarzschild radii. This resolution corresponds to a similar spatial resolution (in terms of R_s) obtained for Sgr A*. We discuss existing and new size determinations for this source provided by mm-VLBI at wavelengths of 3, 2, and 1.4 mm. The Global mm-VLBI Array is at present the most sensitive 3 mm-VLBI interferometer and provides images of up to 40 micro-arcsecond resolution. Using this array, we have monitored the rotation of the innermost jet in the quasar NRAO 150, which shows an angular speed of ~ 7 deg./yr. Future 3 mm arrays could include additional stations like ALMA, GBT, LMT, CARMA, SRT, Yebes, Nobeyama and Noto, which would allow to push VLBI at this wavelength to sensitivity and image quality levels comparable to those of present VLBI at centimeter wavelengths. This would improve our knowledge of the accretion systems and the magneto-hydrodynamics of the innermost jets in AGN and microquasars., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Multi-epoch GHz Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data of the radio-loud quasar J1101+7225 were analyzed to estimate the proper motion of extended optically thin jet components. Two components separated from the core could be mapped at 1.66 GHz, which is consistent with earlier observations. In one case we found evidence of high apparent superluminal motion (beta_app= 22.5+/-4) at large (deprojected) distances to the core (22 mas ~ 4 kpc at z= 1.46). Typically in other quasars such high separation velocities are only found much closer to the core component. Furthermore the Doppler factor, the magnetic field strength, and the angular size of the optically thick core were derived using published X-ray data. Analysis of 5 GHz VLBI data reveals the existence of further jet components within the central 5 mas. Additionally the data published so far on the GHz-spectrum were discussed at all angular resolutions. We present preliminary results from a statistical survey of compact structure in faint radio sources. Around 1000 sources from the VLA FIRST survey (flux densities larger than 1 mJy at 1.4 GHz) have been observed with the single-baseline interferometer Effelsberg-Arecibo. We observed each source, selected from a narrow strip of sky at declination 28 deg, for just one minute. The baseline sensitivity at 1.4 GHz, using 512 Mb/s recording, is such that any FIRST source, selected at random, would be detected if most of its flux density is in compact structure. We summarize the present status of VLBI experiments at 3 mm (86 GHz), 2 mm (129-150 GHz) and 1.3 mm (215-230 GHz). We present and discuss a new 3 mm VLBI map of M87 (Virgo A), which has a spatial resolution of only approx. 20 Schwarzschild radii. We discuss recent VLBI results for SgrA* and argue in favor of new observations within an extended European mm-VLBI network, in order to search for variability. We have conducted multi-epoch EVN observations of the 22.2 GHz water masers towards four high-mass star forming regions (Sh 2-255 IR, IRAS 23139+5939, WB89-234, and OMC2). The (three) observing epochs span a time range of 6 months. In each region, the water maser emission likely originates close (within a few hundreds of AU) to a forming high-mass YSO. Several maser features (~10) have been detected for each source and, for those features persistent over the three epochs, proper motions have been derived. The amplitudes of the proper motions are found to be larger than the range of variation of the line-of-sight velocities and in each of the observed sources the proper motion orientation seems to indicate an expansion motion. The gas kinematics traced by the 22.2 GHz water masers is compatible with the shock-excited nature of water maser emission. Three different kinematic models (a spherical expanding shell, a Keplerian rotating disk, and a conical outflow) were fitted to the 3-dimensional velocity field of the detected maser features. The results of these fits, together with the comparison of the VLBI maps with the highest-resolution images of the sources in several thermal tracers, suggest that the water maser features are most likely tracing the inner portion of the molecular outflows detected at much larger-scales., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in A&A

We present a detailed VLBI study of the spectral properties of the inner core region of the radio galaxy Cygnus A at 5 GHz, 15 GHz, 22 GHz, 43 GHz and 86 GHz. Our observations include an epoch using phase-referencing at 15 GHz and 22 GHz and the first successful VLBI observations of Cygnus A at 86 GHz. We find a pronounced two-sided jet structure, with a steep spectrum along the jet and an inverted spectrum towards the counter-jet. Global millimetre VLBI allows detailed studies of the most central jet regions of AGN with unprecedent spatial resolution of a few 100-1000 Schwartzschild radii to be made. Study of these regions will help to answer the question how the highly relativistic AGN jets are launched and collimated. Since the early 1990s, bright mm-sources have been observed with global 3 mm VLBI. Here we present new images from an ongoing systematic analysis of the available observations. In particular, we focus on the structure and structural evolution of the best observed AGN jets, taking 3C 454.3 as a characteristic example. This core-dominated and highly variable quasar shows a complex morphology with individual jet components accelerating superluminally towards the outer structure. We have conducted multi-epoch EVN observations of the 22.2 GHz water masers towards the high-mass young stellar object in AFGL 5142. With four observing epochs, spanning a time of ~1 year, 12 distinct maser features have been detected, 7 out of these detected in more than one epoch. The positions and the velocities of the VLBI features agree well with those of the emission centers previously identified by means of VLA observations. For a few features, persistent over three or four epochs, accurate values of the proper motions are derived. On the basis of their spatial distribution, the observed maser features can be divided into two groups. A model fit to the positions and velocities of the maser features of Group I, detected in the same region (within ~500 mas) where the massive YSO should be located, demonstrates that these might arise on the surface of a nearly edge-on Keplerian disk, rotating around a massive young stellar object. The maser features of Group II, found at large distances from the YSO (> 1 arcsec), have positions and line-of-sight velocities in agreement with the blue-shifted lobe of a large scale molecular outflow (traced by the HCO+ and SiO emission), and might result from the interaction between the gas flowing away from the young stellar object and the ambient gas of the progenitor molecular core., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, to be published in A&A

We present the first multi-frequency phase-referenced observations of Cygnus A done with the VLBA at 15 and 22 GHz. We find a pronounced two-sided jet structure, with a steep spectrum along the jet and a highly inverted spectrum towards the counter-jet. The inverted spectrum and the frequency dependent jet to counter-jet ratio suggest an obscuring torus in front of the counter-jet. From 14 epochs of 15 GHz VLBA data we accurately derive the jet and counter-jet kinematics. For the inner jet (r <= 5 mas) we measure motions of beta_app ~ 0.2-0.5 h^{-1} and on the counter-jet side we find beta_ app ~ 0.03+-0.02 h^{-1}. Very Long Baseline Polarimetric observations of the Broad Line Radio galaxy 3C111 performed in July and September of 1996 at 8 and 43 GHz reveal rapidly evolving parsec-scale radio structure after a large millimetre outburst. The B-field geometry is not simple. We describe, and present preliminary results from the analysis of 1.6 GHz VLBI observations, made in Cluster-Cluster mode between subgroups of antennas from the WSRT, VLA and MERLIN arrays. We observed for two 6-hour periods on consecutive days, simultaneously monitoring 4 compact radio sources with angular separations ranging from ~1 to 9 degrees. The data were recorded in a non-standard MkIII mode using special set-ups, and correlated at the MPIfR MkIIIa correlator. The preliminary results from standard and phase reference analyses are very encouraging. Our recent VLBI observations of the prominent FR II radio galaxy Cygnus A with the EVN and the VLBA reveal a pronounced two-sided jet structure. At 5 GHz, we now have 4 epochs from 1986, 1991 (Carilli et al., 1991 & 1994), 1996 and 2002 from which we could derive the kinematics of the jet and counter-jet. On the jet side and on mas scales, the jet seems to accelerate from $\beta_{\rm app}\approx 0.1-0.2$ (Krichbaum et al. 1998) at core-separations near 1 mas to $\beta_{\rm app}\approx 0.4-0.6$ at $r \geq 4$ mas ($H_0=100$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$, $q_0=0.5$). For the first time we also measure significant structural variability on the counter-jet side. For this, we derive a motion of $\beta_{\rm app}=0.35\pm0.2$ at $r=9.5$ mas. In April 2002 an array of antennas operating at 129GHz successfully detected VLBI fringes on both continuum AGN and SiO maser sources. The 129GHz fringes on maser sources represent the highest frequency spectral line VLBI detections to date. The AGN 3C279 was detected on long baselines at both 129GHz (and at 147GHz, see Krichbaum et al in these proceedings) yielding fringe spacings of 50-56 micro arc seconds, an angular resolution record. The array consisted of the University of Arizona Kittpeak 12m antenna, the Heinrich Hertz 10m Telescope (HHT), and the IRAM 30m dish on Pico Veleta. At 129GHz, a number of evolved stars and several young stellar objects exhibit strong SiO maser emission in the v=1 J=3-2 transition. Preliminary cross power spectra of SiO masers around the red hypergiant VYCMa on the HHT-KittPeak baseline ~190km are consistent with multiple spatially separate maser spots associated with the star. At 147 GHz (2mm wavelength), we detected three prominent AGN (NRAO150, 3C279, 1633+382) with Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) with an angular resolution of only 18 micro-arcseconds on the baseline between two antennas in Arizona (10m HHT and 12m KittPeak) and the IRAM 30m antenna on Pico Veleta in Spain. Nearby M-dwarfs are best suited for searches of low mass companions. VLBI phase-referencing observations with sensitive telescopes are able to detect radio star flux-densities of tenths of mJy as well as to position the star on the sky with submilliarcsecond precision. We have initiated a long-term observational program, using EVN telescopes in combination with NASA DSN dishes, to revisit the kinematics of nearby, single M dwarfs. The precision of the astrometry allows us to search for possible companions with masses down to 1 Jupiter mass.
