Abstract

Abstract The search for neutrino events in correlation with gravitational wave (GW) events for three observing runs (O1, O2 and O3) from 09/2015 to 03/2020 has been performed using the Borexino data-set of the same period. We have searched for signals of neutrino-electron scattering and inverse beta-decay (IBD) within a time window of $$\pm \, 1000$$ ± 1000 s centered at the detection moment of a particular GW event. The search was done with three visible energy thresholds of 0.25, 0.8 and 3.0 MeV. Two types of incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the mono-energetic line and the supernova-like spectrum. GW candidates originated by merging binaries of black holes (BHBH), neutron stars (NSNS) and neutron star and black hole (NSBH) were analyzed separately. Additionally, the subset of most intensive BHBH mergers at closer distances and with larger radiative mass than the rest was considered. In total, follow-ups of 74 out of 93 gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-3 catalog were analyzed and no statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on GW-associated neutrino and antineutrino fluences for all flavors ( $$\nu _e, \nu _\mu , \nu _\tau $$ ν e , ν μ , ν τ ) at the level $$10^9{-}10^{15}~\textrm{cm}^{-2}\,\textrm{GW}^{-1}$$ 10 9 - 10 15 cm - 2 GW - 1 have been obtained in the 0.5–5 MeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract

Abstract The search for neutrino events in correlation with 42 most intense fast radio bursts (FRBs) has been performed using the Borexino dataset from 05/2007 to 06/2021. We have searched for signals with visible energies above 250 keV within a time window of $$\pm \, 1000$$ ± 1000 s corresponding to detection time of a particular FRB. We also applied an alternative approach based on searching for specific shapes of neutrino-electron scattering spectra in the full exposure data of the Borexino detector. In particular, two incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the monoenergetic line and the spectrum expected from supernovae. The same spectra were considered for electron antineutrinos detected through inverse beta-decay reaction. No statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on FRB-associated neutrino fluences of all flavors have been obtained in the 0.5–50 MeV neutrino energy range.

Abstract

Abstract Cosmogenic radio-nuclei are an important source of background for low-energy neutrino experiments. In Borexino, cosmogenic $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays outnumber solar pep and CNO neutrino events by about ten to one. In order to extract the flux of these two neutrino species, a highly efficient identification of this background is mandatory. We present here the details of the most consolidated strategy, used throughout Borexino solar neutrino measurements. It hinges upon finding the space-time correlations between $$^{11}$$ 11 C decays, the preceding parent muons and the accompanying neutrons. This article describes the working principles and evaluates the performance of this Three-Fold Coincidence (TFC) technique in its two current implementations: a hard-cut and a likelihood-based approach. Both show stable performances throughout Borexino Phases II (2012–2016) and III (2016–2020) data sets, with a $$^{11}$$ 11 C tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90$$ ∼ 90 % and $$\sim $$ ∼ 63–66 % of the exposure surviving the tagging. We present also a novel technique that targets specifically $$^{11}$$ 11 C produced in high-multiplicity during major spallation events. Such $$^{11}$$ 11 C appear as a burst of events, whose space-time correlation can be exploited. Burst identification can be combined with the TFC to obtain about the same tagging efficiency of $$\sim 90\%$$ ∼ 90 % but with a higher fraction of the exposure surviving, in the range of $$\sim $$ ∼ 66–68 %.

Abstract

We report on the development of scintillating bolometers based on lithium molybdate crystals that contain molybdenum that has depleted into the double-β active isotope 100Mo (Li2100deplMoO4). We used two Li2100deplMoO4 cubic samples, each of which consisted of 45-millimeter sides and had a mass of 0.28 kg; these samples were produced following the purification and crystallization protocols developed for double-β search experiments with 100Mo-enriched Li2MoO4 crystals. Bolometric Ge detectors were utilized to register the scintillation photons that were emitted by the Li2100deplMoO4 crystal scintillators. The measurements were performed in the CROSS cryogenic set-up at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (Spain). We observed that the Li2100deplMoO4 scintillating bolometers were characterized by an excellent spectrometric performance (∼3–6 keV of FWHM at 0.24–2.6 MeV γs), moderate scintillation signal (∼0.3–0.6 keV/MeV scintillation-to-heat energy ratio, depending on the light collection conditions), and high radiopurity (228Th and 226Ra activities are below a few µBq/kg), which is comparable with the best reported results of low-temperature detectors that are based on Li2MoO4 using natural or 100Mo-enriched molybdenum content. The prospects of Li2100deplMoO4 bolometers for use in rare-event search experiments are briefly discussed.

Abstract

Ongoing social restrictions, including social distancing and lockdown, adopted by many countries to inhibit spread of the the COVID-19 epidemic, must attempt to find a trade-off between induced economic damage, healthcare system collapse, and the costs in terms of human lives. Applying and removing restrictions on a system with a given latency as represented by an epidemic outbreak (and formally comparable with mechanical inertia), may create critical instabilities, overshoots, and strong oscillations in the number of infected people around the desirable set-point, defined in a practical way as the maximum number of hospitalizations acceptable by a given healthcare system. A good understanding of the system reaction to any change of the input control variable can be reasonably achieved using a proportional–integral–derivative controller (PID), which is a widely used technique in various physics and technological applications. In this paper, this control theory to is proposed to be applied epidemiology, to understand the reaction of COVID-19 propagation to social restrictions and to reduce epidemic damages through the correct tuning of the containment policy. Regarding the synthesis of this interdisciplinary approach, the extended to the susceptible–infectious–recovered (SIR) model name “SIR-PID” is suggested.

6. A new approach to dark matter from the mass–radius diagram of the Universe

Abstract

Modern cosmology successfully deals with the origin and the evolution of the Universe at large scales, but it is unable to completely answer the question about the nature of the fundamental objects that it is describing. As a matter of fact, about 95% of the constituents of the Universe is indeed completely unknown: it cannot be described in terms of known particles. Despite intense efforts to shed light on this “literal” darkness by dark matter and dark energy direct and indirect searches, not much progress has been made so far. In this work, we take a different perspective by reviewing and elaborating an old idea of studying the mass–radius distribution of structures in the Universe in relationship with the fundamental forces acting on them. As we will describe in detail, the distribution of the observed structures in the Universe is not completely random, but it reflects the intimate features of the involved particles and the nature of the fundamental interactions at play. The observed structures cluster in restricted regions of the mass–radius diagram linked to known particles, with the remarkable exception of very large structures that seem to be linked to an unknown particle in the sub-eV mass range. We conjecture that this new particle is a self-interacting dark matter candidate.

Abstract

Abstract The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-ν e survival probability P ee (E), and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI’s) which modify the chiral couplings and P ee (E). In this paper, we search for such NSI’s, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the ν e e and ν τ e couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI’s are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of sin2 θ W is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments .

Abstract

Abstract Residual flux and angular distribution of high-energy cosmic muons have been measured in two underground locations at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) using a dedicated Muon Monitor. The instrument consists of three layers of fast scintillation detector modules operating as 352 independent pixels. The monitor has a flux-defining area of $$1~\hbox {m}^{2}$$ 1m2 and covers all azimuth angles, and zenith angles up to $$80^{\circ }$$ 80∘ . The measured integrated muon flux is $$(5.26 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-3}~\hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ (5.26±0.21)×10-3m-2s-1 in the Hall A of the LAB2400 and $$(4.29 \,\pm \, 0.17) \times 10^{-3}~\hbox {m}^{-2}\hbox {s}^{-1}$$ (4.29±0.17)×10-3m-2s-1 in LAB2500. The angular dependence is consistent with the known profile and rock density of the surrounding mountains. In particular, there is a clear maximum in the flux coming from the direction of the Rioseta valley.

Abstract

This paper reports a brief introduction to Deep Underground Laboratories (DULs) and the connection they have with research on biology in extreme environments and the effect of radiation in life. Presently, there are 14 DULs in operation worldwide. Although the main research activity in these infrastructures concerns the search for rare events in astroparticle physics and neutrino physics, DULs offer a unique opportunity to undertake experiments in astrobiology and biology in extreme environments. This is the main motivation of Deep Underground Laboratory Integrated Activity in biology (DULIA-bio) 2019 Workshop, which was held at the Gran Sasso (Italy) underground laboratory. This paper aims to give an introduction to the subject of the Workshop by reviewing the main features of DULs.

Abstract

Scientific community and institutions (e. g., ICRP) consider that the Linear No-Threshold (LNT) model, which extrapolates stochastic risk at low dose/low dose rate from the risk at moderate/high doses, provides a prudent basis for practical purposes of radiological protection. However, biological low dose/dose rate responses that challenge the LNT model have been highlighted and important dowels came from radiobiology studies conducted in Deep Underground Laboratories (DULs). These extreme ultra-low radiation environments are ideal locations to conduct below-background radiobiology experiments, interesting from basic and applied science. The INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) (Italy) is the site where most of the underground radiobiological data has been collected so far and where the first in vivo underground experiment was carried out using Drosophila melanogaster as model organism. Presently, many DULs around the world have implemented dedicated programs, meetings and proposals. The general message coming from studies conducted in DULs using protozoan, bacteria, mammalian cells and organisms (flies, worms, fishes) is that environmental radiation may trigger biological mechanisms that can increase the capability to cope against stress. However, several issues are still open, among them: the role of the quality of the radiation spectrum in modulating the biological response, the dependence on the biological endpoint and on the model system considered, the overall effect at organism level (detrimental or beneficial). At LNGS, we recently launched the RENOIR experiment aimed at improving knowledge on the environmental radiation spectrum and to investigate the specific role of the gamma component on the biological response of Drosophila melanogaster.

Abstract

The study of very low energy neutrinos requires a suppression of the natural radioactivity up to ultra-traces level. This is what the Borexino experiment succeeded to achieve with the development of technologies for liquid purification and non-standard approaches in constructing and assembling the detector, allowing a threshold down to 50 keV. Thanks to these measures, the entire solar neutrino spectrum has been detected, neglecting the hep neutrinos which account for less than 10 − 5 of the total flux, together with a small, but clean and robust geoneutrino signal; they represent new achievements in the physics of the Sun, the stars and neutrinos, and they open new horizons in the study of the Earth’s interior too. This report describes the technology employed to achieve these goals and the results obtained throughout more than 10 years of data collection. Among the results, actual breakthroughs can be counted: the identification of the nuclear reactions which produce 99% of solar energy and consequently solar luminosity, combined with the demonstration of the solar stability on a 105 years scale; the confirmation of the Standard Solar Model predictions through the measured neutrino fluxes, leading the way for a significant indication in favor of the high metallicity composition of the Sun; the independent demonstration of the validity of the MSW neutrino oscillation solution, through the determination in a single experiment of the distinctive transition of the electron neutrino survival probability from the matter to the vacuum regime; and finally the achievement of the first experimental evidence of the CNO cycle, which dominates in the stars. To this date BOREXINO is a unique experiment with its unprecedented radiopurity level, achieved by means of innovative techniques, which have now become a standard reference for the whole physics field of rare events search.

Abstract

We present the most recent solar neutrino results from the Borexino experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. In particular, refined measurements of all neutrinos produced in the {\it pp} fusion chain have been made. It is the first time that the same detector measures the entire range of solar neutrinos at once. These new data weakly favor a high-metallicity Sun. Prospects for measuring CNO solar neutrinos are also discussed.

17. Science and technology in deep unerground laboratories

Abstract

Deep Underground Laboratories (DULs) are large research infrastructures with a minimum rock overburden equivalent to one km water equivalent. In DULs the flux of muons from cosmic rays is reduced by several order of magnitude with respect to the surface. This allows to perform research on very rare events, such as exotic radioactive decays, double beta decays, low energy neutrino and dark matter interactions. The phenomenon of neutrino oscillations has been discovered in DULs back in 1998. Solar neutrinos were first observed in a DUL in 1968. As of today thanks to research carried out in DULs over four decades we have studied in detail the energy production mechanisms in the sun’s core. In 1987 neutrinos from a core collapse supernova in the Large Magellanic Cloud were observed confirming our basic understanding of this high energetic event. DULs, at present, are equipped with more sensitive and better performing experiments to improve significantly these early studies. The large SuperKamiokande detector in Japan can observe as many as ten thousand events for a core collapse supernova at the center of our galaxy. The Borexino experiment in Italy has observed CNO neutrinos which contribute to only 1% of the energy production in the sun but are very important for more massive stars. All these crucial measurements could have not been possible without operating experiments in a deep underground site.In the last decade the research horizon in DULs has expanded to include gravitational waves, geophysics, astrobiology, and biology in underground environments.DULs are equipped with facilities to measure low levels of radioactivity by means of different techniques. This offers a unique opportunity to study living organism in a low radioactivity environment, namely with a significant reduction of cosmic rays and neutrons with respect to surface. DULs are being used by a large community of scientists ranging from astrophysicists, particle physicists, geophysicists, and biologists. There are 14 DULs in operation worldwide which correspond to about one million cubic meters excavated.In the talk a brief review of DUL’s main features and research activities will be discussed.

Abstract

The Borexino detector at Gran Sasso National Laboratories (INFN) has obtained extraordinary achievements for solar neutrino and geoneutrino physics during its lifetime. More recently, Borexino has provided the first experimental evidence of the subdominant CNO solar neutrino flux, thanks to an outstanding low background level obtained by means of intense purification campaigns and a continuous improvement of the detector thermal stabilization over the years. In particular, this impressive thermal steadiness has led to a progressive mitigation of the internal convective currents which are responsible for the continuous background contamination of the detector sensitive inner volume. To this purpose, numerical analyses are essential to better comprehend the detector fluid dynamics, the background behavior, and are also important to propose effective countermeasures to further reduce natural convection inside the detector. In this framework, the present work investigates the flow characteristics of the liquid scintillator by means of computational fluid dynamics analyses. In particular, a full 3D model of the Borexino inner vessel is considered in the simulations, addressing the complex nature of the natural convective currents under consideration both in transient and stationary conditions. The calculated flow pattern has been adopted to predict the transport behavior of 210Po, that is fundamental for the independent constraint of 210Bi, the main background constituent affecting CNO measurement. The convection-diffusion analysis demonstrates the applicability of the adopted methodology showing a good agreement between calculation and experimental data.

Abstract

Solar neutrinos have played a central role in the discovery of the neutrino oscillation mechanism. They still are proving to be a unique tool to help investigate the fusion reactions that power stars and further probe basic neutrino properties. The Borexino neutrino observatory has been operationally acquiring data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy since 2007. Its main goal is the real-time study of low energy neutrinos (solar or originated elsewhere, such as geo-neutrinos). The latest analysis of experimental data, taken during the so-called Borexino Phase-II (2011-present), will be showcased in this talk—yielding new high-precision, simultaneous wide band flux measurements of the four main solar neutrino components belonging to the “pp„ fusion chain (pp, pep, 7 Be, 8 B), as well as upper limits on the remaining two solar neutrino fluxes (CNO and hep).

Abstract

Ongoing social restrictions, including social distancing and lockdown, adopted by many countries to inhibit spread of the the COVID-19 epidemic, must attempt to find a trade-off between induced economic damage, healthcare system collapse, and the costs in terms of human lives. Applying and removing restrictions on a system with a given latency as represented by an epidemic outbreak (and formally comparable with mechanical inertia), may create critical instabilities, overshoots, and strong oscillations in the number of infected people around the desirable set-point, defined in a practical way as the maximum number of hospitalizations acceptable by a given healthcare system. A good understanding of the system reaction to any change of the input control variable can be reasonably achieved using a proportional–integral–derivative controller (PID), which is a widely used technique in various physics and technological applications. In this paper, this control theory to is proposed to be applied epidemiology, to understand the reaction of COVID-19 propagation to social restrictions and to reduce epidemic damages through the correct tuning of the containment policy. Regarding the synthesis of this interdisciplinary approach, the extended to the susceptible–infectious–recovered (SIR) model name “SIR-PID” is suggested.

21. Temperature Stabilization of the Borexino Detector for the CNO Quest

Abstract

The detection of the Solar Neutrino interaction rate from the CNO-cycle through the spectral analysis in Borexino is extremely difficult, given its spectral similarity with the Bi-210 background. The current strategy is based on the Bi-210 (β-, τ = 7 d) background independent constraint, coming from Pb-210 (β-, τ = 32 y) and decaying into Po-210(α, τ = 200 d) through the A=210 decay chain. In practice, the Bi-210 rate can be inferred by the Po-210 rate if sufficient thermodynamics equilibrium conditions of the detector are reached. Since 2011, we have been observing consistent migrations (convection and diffusion) of Po-210 in the scintillator liquid from the containment vessel. This observation has motivated the Collaboration to make an effort in deploying temperature control and thermal insulation systems to reduce Po-210 migration. Detailed 2D and 3D fluid dynamics simulations and performance of the thermal insulation system will be discussed.

Abstract

We report on an improved measurement of the $^8$B solar neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Neutrinos are detected via their elastic scattering on electrons in a large volume of liquid scintillator. The measured rate of scattered electrons above 3 MeV of energy is $0.223\substack{+0.015 \\ -0.016}\,(stat)\,\substack{+0.006 \\ -0.006}\,(syst)$ cpd/100 t, which corresponds to an observed solar neutrino flux assuming no neutrino flavor conversion of $\Phi\substack{\rm ES \\ ^8\rm B}=2.57\substack{+0.17 \\ -0.18}(stat)\substack{+0.07\\ -0.07}(syst)\times$10$^6$ cm$^{-2}\,$s$^{-1}$. This measurement exploits the active volume of the detector in almost its entirety for the first time, and takes advantage of a reduced radioactive background following the 2011 scintillator purification campaign and of novel analysis tools providing a more precise modeling of the background. Additionally, we set a new limit on the interaction rate of solar $hep$ neutrinos, searched via their elastic scattering on electrons as well as their neutral current-mediated inelastic scattering on carbon, $^{12}$C($\nu,\nu'$)$^{12}$C* ($E_{\gamma}$= 15.1 MeV).

Abstract

The Borexino detector at Gran Sasso has now accumulated over ten years of continuous data which represent a magnificent opportunity to study the cosmic muon flux at a deep underground location. We present here a precision measurement of the flux and of the expected seasonal modulation. We present the correlation with the atmospheric temperature variations from global atmospheric models. We measure the correlation parameters and infer the kaon-to-pion ratio in the production of cosmic muons from high energy primaries. We also find evidence of a long term modulation that is not present in the atmospheric data and we investigate a possible positive correlation with the solar activity. Finally we observe a seasonal modulation of the production rate of cosmogenic neutrons that is in phase with the muon modulation but shows a surprisingly larger amplitude.

Abstract

The Borexino liquid scintillator neutrino observatory has a unique capability to perform high-precision solar neutrino observations thanks to its exceptional radiopurity and good energy resolution (5% at 1 MeV). A comprehensive study of the pp-chain neutrinos was presented that includes the direct measurements of 7Be, pp and pep neutrino fluxes with the highest precision ever achieved (down to 2.8% in the 7Be component), the 8B with the lowest energy threshold, the best limit on CNO neutrinos and the first Borexino limit on hep neutrinos. These results are important to validate the MSW-LMA oscillation paradigm across the full solar energy range and to exclude possible Non-Standard neutrino Interactions (NSIs). In particular the effects of neutrino-flavor-diagonal Neutral-Current (NC) interactions that modify the vee and vτe couplings while preserving their chiral and flavor structures, have been investigated. At detection, the shape of the electron-recoil spectrum is affected by changes in the vee and vτe couplings, quantified by the parameters ε e L / R and ε τ L / R . New bounds to all four parameters were obtained, quite stringent compared to the global ones. In particular, the best constraint to-date on ε e L was achieved. A comprehensive summary of all the recent results on solar neutrinos from Borexino is reported in the present paper.

Abstract

Borexino is a 280-ton liquid scintillator detector located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and is one of the two detectors that has measured geoneutrinos so far. The unprecedented radio-purity of the scintillator, the shielding with highly purified water, and the placement of the detector at a 3800 m w.e. depth have resulted in very low background levels and has made Borexino an excellent apparatus for geoneutrino measurements. The new update of the Borexino geoneutrino measurement, using the data obtained from December 2007 to April 2019, has been presented. Enhanced analysis techniques, adopted in this measurement, have been also presented (poster presentation #39 by S. Kumaran). The updated statistics and the new elaborate analysis have led to more than a factor two increase in exposure ((1.12 ± 0.05) × 1032 protons × yr) when compared to the latest Borexino result from 2015. The resulting geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU has − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision. The geological interpretations of this measurement have been discussed. In particular, the 99% C.L. observation of the mantle signal by exploiting the relatively well-known lithospheric contribution, the estimation of the radiogenic heat, as well as the comparison of these results to the predictions based on different geological models. The upper limits on the power of a hypothetical georeactor that might be present at different locations inside the Earth have been set.

Abstract

Moving beyond the important contributions to neutrino physics obtained by the Borexino experiment during the last years, research activities are ongoing at INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratories to further improve the detector sensitivity in order to perform an accurate measurement of the subdominant CNO solar neutrino rate. To this purpose, the improvement of the detector fluid-dynamic stability is the key to further reduce the 210Po background, that is continuously being transported inside the measurement fiducial volume by convective currents. In this framework, numerical simulations of the detector fluid-dynamics may help to better comprehend the 210Po behaviour, and also to suggest effective countermeasures, able to minimize the natural convection inside the detector. In the present work, two-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed to improve the current understanding of Borexino thermal and fluid-dynamics. Adopted models have been optimized for different regions and periods of interest, focusing on the most critical aspects that were identified as influencing the polonium background concentrations. In particular, a Borexino-specific benchmark was constructed in order to validate the model temperature predictions. The derived inner vessel surface temperatures are successively used as boundary conditions for a more refined convective model of the inner most part of the detector. Based on the calculated convective currents, the transport behaviour of background 210Po inside the detector active volume was investigated by means of a convection–diffusion model, showing a reasonable good agreement between calculations and experimental data.

Abstract

Ultra-pure NaI(Tl) crystals are the key element for a model-independent verification of the long standing DAMA result and a powerful means to search for the annual modulation signature of dark matter interactions. The SABRE collaboration has been developing cutting-edge techniques for the reduction of intrinsic backgrounds over several years. In this paper we report the first characterization of a 3.4 kg crystal, named NaI-33, performed in an underground passive shielding setup at LNGS. NaI-33 has a record low $$^{39}$$ 39 K contamination of 4.3 ± 0.2 ppb as determined by mass spectrometry. We measured a light yield of 11.1 ± 0.2 photoelectrons/keV and an energy resolution of 13.2% (FWHM/E) at 59.5 keV. We evaluated the activities of $$^{226}$$ 226 Ra and $$^{228}$$ 228 Th inside the crystal to be $$5.9\pm 0.6~\upmu $$ 5.9 ± 0.6 μ Bq/kg and $$1.6\pm 0.3~\upmu $$ 1.6 ± 0.3 μ Bq/kg, respectively, which would indicate a contamination from $$^{238}$$ 238 U and $$^{232}$$ 232 Th at part-per-trillion level. We measured an activity of 0.51 ± 0.02 mBq/kg due to $$^{210}$$ 210 Pb out of equilibrium and a $$\alpha $$ α quenching factor of 0.63 ± 0.01 at 5304 keV. We illustrate the analyses techniques developed to reject electronic noise in the lower part of the energy spectrum. A cut-based strategy and a multivariate approach indicated a rate, attributed to the intrinsic radioactivity of the crystal, of $$\sim $$ ∼ 1 count/day/kg/keV in the [5–20] keV region.

Enhanced analysis techniques, such as an increased fiducial volume, improved veto for cosmogenic backgrounds, extended energy and coincidence time windows, as well as a more efficient α/β particle discrimination have been adopted in this measurement. The updated statistics and these elaborate resulted in a geoneutrino signal of 47.0 − 7.7 + 8.4 ( stat ) − 1.9 + 2.4 ( sys ) TNU with − 17.2 + 18.3 % total precision.

Abstract

Thanks to the progress of neutrino physics, today we are able of exploiting neutrinos as a tool to study astrophysical objects. The latter in turn serve as unique sources of elusive neutrinos, which fundamental properties are still to be understood. This contribution attempts to summarize the latest results obtained by measuring neutrinos emitted from the Sun and geoneutrinos produced in radioactive decays inside the Earth, with a particular focus on a recent discovery of the CNO-cycle solar neutrinos by Borexino. Comprehensive measurement of the pp-chain solar neutrinos and the first directional detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos by Borexino, the updated 8B solar neutrino results of Super-Kamiokande, as well as the latest Borexino and KamLAND geoneutrino measurements are also discussed.

Abstract

Borexino is a 280t liquid scintillator detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy. Its main goal is the precision spectroscopy of solar neutrinos down to energies of 0.19 MeV and for this task it features an unprecedented radio-purity and a high scintillation light yield. The solar neutrinos are measured by the elastic scattering off electrons which induce isotropically emitted scintillation photons as well as a sub-dominant number of Cherenkov photons that are detected by photomulitplier tubes. Here we present the first detection of sub-MeV solar neutrinos using their associated Cherenkov photons in a high light yield liquid scintillator detector. In Borexino electrons with E>0.16MeV produce Cherenkov photons, where the ratio of Cherenkov photons from the neutrino scattered electrons is estimated to be < 1% for all PMT hits, so a typical event by event direction reconstruction is not possible. Instead this analysis looks at the integrated signal of the PMT hits of all detected events by correlating the position of each hit PMT relative to the reconstructed position of the event and the well known position of the Sun. In this way it is possible to measure an angular distribution that shows the statistical contribution of Cherenkov photons from the solar neutrino recoil electrons. Using the Geant4-based Borexino Monte Carlo to produce the expected angular distribution for solar neutrinos and background we have measured 8643 − 2058 +2252 neutrino events out of 19904 total events for an energy region around the 7Be edge between 0.53 MeV and 0.74 MeV.

Abstract

The Borexino detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, is a radiopure 280 ton liquid scintillator detector with a primary goal to measure low-energy solar neutrinos created in the core of the Sun. These neutrinos are a consequence of nuclear fusion reactions in the solar core where Hydrogen is burned into Helium and provide a direct probe of the energy production processes, namely the proton-proton (pp) chain and the Carbon-Nitrogen-Oxygen (CNO) cycle. The fusion of Hydrogen in the case of the CNO cycle, which is expected to contribute in the order of less than 1% to the total solar energy, is catalyzed by Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen directly depending on the abundances of these elements in the solar core. The measurement of CNO neutrinos is challenging due to the high spectral correlation with the decay electrons of the background isotope 210Bi and the pep solar neutrino signal. The experimental achievement of thermal stabilization of the Borexino detector after mid 2016, has opened the possibility to develop a method to constrain the 210Bi rate through its decay daughter and α emitter 210Po which can be identified in Borexino with an efficiency close to 100 percent on an event-by-event basis. Moreover, the flux of pep neutrinos can be constrained precisely through a global analysis of solar neutrino data which is independent of the dataset used for the CNO analysis. This conference contribution is dedicated to the first experimental evidence of neutrinos produced in the CNO fusion cycle in the Sun which is at the same time the dominant energy production mechanism in heavier stars compared to the Sun.

Abstract

Borexino is running at the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboraries, Italy since 2007. Its technical distinctive feature is the unprecedented ultralow background of the inner scintillating core, which is the foundation for the outstanding achievements accumulated by this experiment. In this contribution, after recalling the main features of the detector, the impressive solar data gathered so far by Borexino will be summarized. Special emphasis will be given to the illustration of the recent release of the fluxes as stemming from the simultaneous real time spectroscopy of the neutrinos from the entire $pp$ nuclear fusion chain in the Sun, opening with the remarkable 2.7% accuracy of the ⁷Be flux the era of precision measurements also in the realm of the sub-MeV solar neutrinos. Such results put Borexino in the unique situation of being the only detector able to perform solar neutrino spectroscopy over the entire solar spectrum; the counterpart of this peculiar status, in the flavor conversion interpretation of the solar neutrino data, is the capability of Borexino alone to perform the full validation across the solar energy range of the MSW-LMA paradigm. This contribution will be concluded with an account of the Borexino accomplishments in the geo-neutrino field, marked by the detection of the geo-neutrino signal with a significance as high as $5.9\sigma$.

Abstract

We present the most recent solar neutrino results from the Borexino experiment at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. In particular, refined measurements of all neutrinos produced in the {\it pp} fusion chain have been made. It is the first time that the same detector measures the entire range of solar neutrinos at once. These new data weakly favor a high-metallicity Sun. Abstract

The Borexino detector measures solar neutrino fluxes via neutrino-electron elastic scattering. Observed spectra are determined by the solar-$\nu_{e}$ survival probability $P_{ee}(E)$, and the chiral couplings of the neutrino and electron. Some theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate the existence of Non-Standard Interactions (NSI's) which modify the chiral couplings and $P_{ee}(E)$. In this paper, we search for such NSI's, in particular, flavor-diagonal neutral current interactions that modify the $\nu_e e$ and $\nu_\tau e$ couplings using Borexino Phase II data. Standard Solar Model predictions of the solar neutrino fluxes for both high- and low-metallicity assumptions are considered. No indication of new physics is found at the level of sensitivity of the detector and constraints on the parameters of the NSI's are placed. In addition, with the same dataset the value of $\sin^2\theta_W$ is obtained with a precision comparable to that achieved in reactor antineutrino experiments., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Residual flux and angular distribution of high-energy cosmic muons have been measured in two underground locations at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) using a dedicated Muon Monitor. The instrument consists of three layers of fast scintillation detector modules operating as 352 independent pixels. The monitor has flux-defining area of 1 m${}^{2}$, covers all azimuth angles, and zenith angles up to $80^\circ$. The measured integrated muon flux is $(5.26 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-3}$ m${}^{-2}$s${}^{-1}$ in the Hall A of the LAB2400 and $(4.29 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$ m${}^{-2}$s${}^{-1}$ in LAB2500. The angular dependence is consistent with the known profile and rock density of the surrounding mountains. In particular, there is a clear maximum in the flux coming from the direction of the Rioseta valley., Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

International audience; The Borexino detector was built starting from 1996 in the underground hall C of Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) in Italy under about 1400 m of rock (3800 m.w.e) and it is mostly aimed to the study in real-time of the low-energy solar neutrinos.Since the beginning of data taking, in May 2007, the unprecedented detector radio-purity made the performances of the detector unique: a milestone has been very recently achieved with the measurement of solar pp neutrino flux, providing the first direct observation in real time of the key fusion reaction powering the Sun.In this contribution the most important Borexino achievements to the fields of solar, geo-neutrino and particle physics are reviewed and the future perspectives discussed, emphasizing in particular the unique possibility of Borexino to cover at the end of its program the entire solar neutrino spectrum and to exploit the possible existence of a fourth sterile neutrino (SOX project).

Abstract

Deep Underground Laboratories are multidisciplinary infrastructures to carry out research on rare events, such as neutrino interactions, proton decay, and dark matter, on geophysics, general relativity, and biology. There are 12 such infrastructures deployed in the north hemisphere. Three new Laboratories are underway, two in the south hemisphere. In the paper some characteristics of the Underground Laboratories are discussed. Synergy between Laboratories is reviewed.

Abstract

Solar neutrinos have played a central role in the discovery of the neutrino oscillation mechanism. They still are proving to be a unique tool to help investigate the fusion reactions that power stars and further probe basic neutrino properties. The Borexino neutrino observatory has been operationally acquiring data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy since 2007. Its main goal is the real-time study of low energy neutrinos (solar or originated elsewhere, such as geo-neutrinos). The latest analysis of experimental data, taken during the so-called Borexino Phase-II (2011-present), will be showcased in this talk - yielding new high-precision, simultaneous wide band flux measurements of the four main solar neutrino components belonging to the "pp" fusion chain (pp, pep, 7Be, 8B), as well as upper limits on the remaining two solar neutrino fluxes (CNO and hep).

Abstract

International audience; In more than ten years of operation, Borexino has performed a precision measurement of the solar neutrino spectrum, resolving almost all spectral components originating from the proton-proton fusion chain. The presentation will review the results recently released for the second data taking phase 2012–2016 during which the detector excelled by its unprecedentedly low background levels. New results on the rate of pp, 7Be, pep and 8B neutrinos as well as their implications for solar neutrino oscillations and metallicity are discussed.

Abstract

International audience; Borexino measured with unprecedented accuracy the fluxes of solar neutrinos emitted at all the steps of the pp fusion chain. Still missing is the measurement of the flux of neutrinos produced in the CNO cycle. A positive measurement of the CNO neutrino flux is of fundamental importance for understanding the evolution of stars and addressing the unresolved controversy on the solar abundances. The measurement of the CNO neutrino flux in Borexino is challenging because of the low intensity of this component (CNO cycle accounts for about 1% of the energy emitted by Sun), the lack of prominent spectral features and the presence of background sources. The main background component is 210Bi decaying in the liquid scintillator of Borexino that creates events with an energy distribution very close to the one of CNO neutrino interactions. Since 2015 the collaboration undertook significant efforts to achieve an independent measurement of the background affecting a CNO measurement, whose impact on the sensitivity to a CNO signal will be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; About 99 per cent of solar energy is produced through sequences of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium, starting from the fusion of two protons (the pp chain). The neutrinos emitted by five of these reactions represent a unique probe of the Sun’s internal working and, at the same time, offer an intense natural neutrino beam for fundamental physics. Here we report a complete study of the pp chain. We measure the neutrino–electron elastic-scattering rates for neutrinos produced by four reactions of the chain: the initial proton–proton fusion, the electron-capture decay of beryllium-7, the three-body proton–electron–proton (pep) fusion, here measured with the highest precision so far achieved, and the boron-8 beta decay, measured with the lowest energy threshold. We also set a limit on the neutrino flux produced by the$^{3}$He–proton fusion (hep). These measurements provide a direct determination of the relative intensity of the two primary terminations of the pp chain (pp-I and pp-II) and an indication that the temperature profile in the Sun is more compatible with solar models that assume high surface metallicity. We also determine the survival probability of solar electron neutrinos at different energies, thus probing simultaneously and with high precision the neutrino flavour-conversion paradigm, both in vacuum and in matter-dominated regimes.

Electroforming of copper can be very effective to obtain high radio-purity copper parts for low-background experiments. To support the construction of experiments at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc in Spain, a Copper Electroforming Service (CES) set-up is in operation. In this work the electroforming system is described and results on the radio-purity of parts made are presented.

Abstract

We present a 1353 days measurement of the geo–neutrino flux in Borexino: the signal was found to be 14.3 ± 4.4 events. This result translates into S geo = (38.8 ± 12.0) TNU when a Th/U fixed chondritic mass ratio of 3.9 is assumed. Furthermore Borexino data are compatible with a mantle geo–neutrino signal of (15.4 ± 12.3) TNU.

Abstract

A search for the solar neutrino effective magnetic moment has been performed using data from 1291.5 days exposure during the second phase of the Borexino experiment. No significant deviations from the expected shape of the electron recoil spectrum from solar neutrinos have been found, and a new upper limit on the effective neutrino magnetic moment of $\mu_{\nu}^{eff}$ $, Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures
