Small mustelids are an understudied group partly due to the challenges in detecting and monitoring their populations. Despite the classification as Least Concern for several small mustelid species, some studies indicate a population decline in parts of their range. Therefore, efficient and group-specific methods are essential to support monitoring efforts. Camera traps are widely used, particularly to monitor cryptic and nocturnal species such as most carnivores. However, they tend to miss small-sized and fast-moving species due to the sensitivity of the passive infrared sensor. The Mostela is a device which consists of a camera trap and a tracking tunnel inside a wooden box, designed specifically to detect small mustelids. Here, we propose testing the performance of this device and comparing it to a tree-mounted camera trap, using the least weasel (M. nivalis) as a case study. We used multi-scale occupancy models to estimate differences in the detection probability between devices. Although both methods detected the least weasel, the detection probability was higher with the Mostela (0.8, BCI: 0.52–0.97 vs 0.2, BCI: 0.03–0.48). Furthermore, we obtained a higher trapping rate when using a shorter distance between sampling stations (∼350 m). Although the Mostela performed better at detecting the weasel, the number of independent events was low (N = 11). Therefore, we present recommendations in terms of deployment and future research since the development and testing of new methods are essential for the conservation efforts of small mustelids.

Abstract Camera‐trapping is considered a cost‐efficient method to monitor wildlife, but relevant performance constraints remain. We assessed performance and cost‐benefit for 2 recent technological innovations: (i) a wireless transmission system where cameras communicate in a network, and (ii) using solar panels as a camera's sole power supply. The maximum distance between cameras that ensured wireless connection varied between 2 km in open habitats and 335 m in forest habitats with dense tree cover. The cost of using the wireless transmission system was lower for surveys run for >45 days and for >15 sampling units (i.e., camera‐trap sites). For surveys longer than 15 days, using the wireless transmission system required, on average, 8 fewer days of fieldwork. We measured the performance of the solar panels in terms of capture probability, and the solar‐powered cameras (β = −0.015 ± 0.01 in the log scale) outperformed battery‐powered cameras (β = −0.103 ± 0.005) as capture rate decreased more slowly, particularly for nighttime events (difference in capture probability of the solar‐powered relative to the battery‐powered cameras at night, β = 0.09 ± 0.01). We consider that, although camera‐traps with wireless transmission can provide a return on investment for a wide range of survey designs, the constraints on maximum distance for transmission are a limitation. Despite the higher cost, we recommend solar‐powered camera‐traps as they had improved performance with a higher proportion of species events captured than by battery‐powered cameras.

Abstract Objective The main goal of this work was to identify, describe, characterize, and classify the scientific evidence regarding the use of pharmacogenomic biomarkers in antidepressant treatment. Methods The work was developed in two phases: i) a search for pharmacogenomic biomarkers in summaries of antidepressant drugs with marketing authorization in Portugal; and ii) a systematic literature review based on the data obtained in the first phase, with the main objective of finding international literature that could describe and characterize previously reported biomarkers and identify other relevant biomarkers. Finally, the levels of evidence and recommendation grades were classified. Results Among the 26 drugs with marketing authorization in Portugal, only 16 had pharmacogenomic information. The most widely studied pharmacogenomic biomarker was CYP2D6. These results were mostly supported by the systematic literature review, which yielded 103 papers, 63 of which were ultimately included in the review. The systematic literature review also revealed the existence of other relevant biomarkers. Most of the included studies show a good level of evidence, which guarantees reliability and good recommendation grades. For the database (built during phase i), the results were informative but resulted in no specific recommendations. Conclusions Most pharmacogenomic variants are not studied or acknowledged by genetic tests, and more scientific research is needed to confirm their usefulness. Therefore, only a small number of variants are considered when prescribing antidepressant drugs. In addition, genotyping of patients is not common in clinical practice.

Visitors have a significant impact on the indoor climate of buildings housing works of art, and the relationship between the number of visitors, the indoor air quality and the protection of exposed works of art is an important factor in the overall study of the indoor climate of heritage buildings without mechanical ventilation and/or air-conditioning systems. In view of these concerns and the lack of studies on natural ventilation in heritage buildings, this study aims to analyse the performance of natural ventilation in the São Cristóvão Church in Lisbon, Portugal. For the preparation of this study, an analysis of the natural ventilation of this church was carried out by creating a model in the CONTAM software, and the indoor air quality was analysed based on different international standards and guidelines for carbon dioxide levels and air flow rates (ACH). Estimating the current ventilation strategy, an average ACH of 0.75 h−1 was estimated during the time the church is open, and an ACH of 0.15 h−1 was estimated during the time the doors were closed. In a yearly analysis, an average ACH of 0.30 h−1 was obtained. These air exchange values guarantee EN 16798-1 category I air quality for 72% of the year and category II air quality for 18% of the year. Different natural ventilation strategies were analysed: (a) three scenarios exploring different cross ventilation scenarios; (b) a scenario assuming that the church is closed all year round; and (c) a scenario estimating an increase in the number of visitors, giving an idea of the variations in human pollutants and possible consequences. Taking into account the air infiltration and the fact that masses, an occasional situation with a high number of visitors, are always held just before the church closes, it is guaranteed that carbon dioxide levels will never exceed the limit of 350 ppm above the outdoor values imposed by EN-13779, registering a maximum of 291 ppm.

Resumen: Introducción: El enclavado endomedular mediante abordaje infrapatelar (IP) se considera el gold estándar del tratamiento de las fracturas diafisarias de tibia, sin embargo, se ha asociado a mayor dificultad para la reducción y complicaciones como la mala alineación en procurvatum y al dolor anterior de rodilla. El abordaje suprapatelar (SP) surge como alternativa para solventar estos aspectos, asociándose también con un menor tiempo intraoperatorio y menor dosis y tiempo de fluoroscopia. Material y métodos: Estudio retrospectivo comparativo entre: un grupo de 22 fracturas intervenidas mediante abordaje SP y otro de 30 fracturas intervenidas por abordaje IP trastendinoso. Se analizaron variables perioperatorias y aspectos clínicos, radiológicos y funcionales en consulta a los 3, 6 y 12 meses. Resultados: No se encontraron diferencias entre grupos en cuanto a tiempo intraoperatorio, anemización, calidad de la reducción, o complicaciones en el seguimiento, entre otros. A los 12 meses, 12 (54,5%) casos SP y 16 (53,3%) IP presentaban dolor anterior de rodilla, sin diferencias significativas. En las escalas de evaluación, se registraron diferencias significativas en la IKDC (International Knee Documentation Committee) a favor de la técnica SP (88,45 [76,44-91,1] vs. IP 69 [49,95-80]) (p = 0,006), sin diferencias significativas en otras escalas funcionales analizadas. Conclusiones: En consonancia con lo hasta ahora descrito en la literatura, el presente estudio apoya la tendencia hacia el enclavado SP por mejorar los resultados funcionales (IKDC) a medio plazo respecto a la técnica tradicional IP, sin aumentar las complicaciones. Asimismo se percibe por los cirujanos una mayor facilidad técnica para la reducción y sencillez en la obtención de imágenes radiológicas intraoperatorias. The therapeutic action of a drug depends on its ability to engage with its molecular target in vivo. However, current drug discovery strategies quantify drug levels within organs rather than determining the binding of drugs directly to their specific molecular targets in vivo. This is a particular problem for assessing the therapeutic potential of drugs that target malignant tumors where access and binding may be impaired by disrupted vasculature and local hypoxia. Here we have used triple-negative human breast cancer cells expressing β2-adrenoceptors tagged with the bioluminescence protein NanoLuc to provide a bioluminescence resonance energy transfer approach to directly quantify ligand binding to a G protein-coupled receptor in vivo using a mouse model of breast cancer.

Introdução: As lesões pigmentadas da mucosa oral podem corresponder a alterações locais ou a manifestações de doença sistémica. Importa conhecer as principais etiologias destas lesões para assim identificar aquelas com necessidade de intervenção e tratamento atempado específico. Descrição do caso: Relata-se o caso de uma mulher de 89 anos que, numa consulta de vigilância de diabetes, refere lesões pigmentadas na língua, com meses de evolução, sem dor ou outra sintomatologia associada. Foi referenciada a consulta de dermatologia para estudo, onde foi realizada biópsia de uma das lesões, cujo resultado foi compatível com mácula melanótica. Perante o quadro clínico e os achados anatomopatológicos foi considerado o diagnóstico de síndroma de Laugier-Hunziker (SLH). A utente foi informada da benignidade do quadro e da ausência de necessidade de tratamento. Comentário: A SLH é uma doença mucocutânea, benigna, de caráter adquirido, que se caracteriza por múltiplas máculas hiperpigmentadas, mais frequentemente presentes na mucosa oral ou lábios e configura um diagnóstico de exclusão. O artigo pretende relatar uma síndroma rara, com manifestação dermatológica, e abordar o diagnóstico diferencial de lesões hiperpigmentadas da mucosa oral.

It is impossible to remain indifferent to the Covidpandemic19, it is impossible not to see that the effects will be global, generational and in the widest areas of human life. With this study, in a random sample, from the possible tools at home, through social networks (among friends and acquaintances, and acquaintances and friends of friends), it was intended to try now to understand what the view of children in the face of this crisis, known as “quarantine”, “pseudovacation”, “war”, “forced school break”, “hidden enemy” and how psychology can or can intervene in a positive and simplified way. Children being the foundations of tomorrow’s society, as they perceive all these changes, all changes, the sudden decisions that government and society incite them to comply with, as well as their parents. Will children/teenagers be aware of what is going on and the scope of the problem, and how do they feel there is a solution and what is it. And if there are changes in an elective awareness, can we talk about prevention, building new mentalities or even the birth of a Brave New World?! ...

This article examines the ways in which two Irish writers use the setting and symbol of the house to depict traumatic rupture and the collapse of a sense of self as a result of loss. In both texts — Enda Walsh’s The Walworth Farce, and Timothy O’Grady and Steve Pyke’s I Could Read the Sky — dissolution of self occurs due to the movement away from the childhood domicile to England. If home can be defined as ‘a sense of belonging or attachment’, then ‘[m]ovement may necessitate or be precipitated by a disruption to a sense of home’. Emigration can result in the formation of an alternative diasporic, transnational community and support network in the absence of immediate familial ties, yet it can also foster a sense of ‘displacement and loneliness’ as well as ‘self‐perceptions of being exiled’. Emigration, whether forced or not, constitutes a form of exile, one which, as Edward Said argues, is experienced as ‘an unhealable rift forced between a human being and a native place, between the self and its true home’, and which results in a ‘crippling sorrow of estrangement’. That traumatic loss is conveyed in both authors’ use of the house (as setting and symbol).

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is an unpredictable and feared side effect of antituberculosis treatment (AT). The present study aimed to identify clinical and genetic variables associated with susceptibility to AT-associated hepatotoxicity in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis treated with a standard protocol. Of 233 patients enrolled, 90% prospectively, 103 developed liver injury: 37 with mild and 66 with severe phenotype (DILI). All patients with mild hepatitis had a RUCAM score ≥4 and all patients with DILI had a RUCAM score ≥ 6. Eight clinical variables and variants in six candidate genes were assessed. A logistic multivariate regression analysis identified four risk factors for AT-DILI: age ≥ 55 years (OR:3.67; 95% CI:1.82–7.41; p < 0.001), concomitant medication with other hepatotoxic drugs (OR:2.54; 95% CI:1.23–5.26; p = 0.012), NAT2 slow acetylator status (OR:2.46; 95% CI:1.25–4.84; p = 0.009), and carriers of p.Val444Ala variant for ABCB11 gene (OR:2.06; 95%CI:1.02–4.17; p = 0.044). The statistical model explains 24.9% of the susceptibility to AT-DILI, with an 8.9 times difference between patients in the highest and in the lowest quartiles of risk scores. This study sustains the complex architecture of AT-DILI. Prospective studies should evaluate the benefit of NAT2 and ABCB11 genotyping in AT personalization, particularly in patients over 55 years.

Na perspectiva de aferir como se vem procedendo metodologicamente e verificar a exata aplicação do método fenomenológico aos estudos em turismo no Brasil, foi realizada neste presente trabalho uma pesquisa de caráter exploratório-descritivo, onde foram analisadas 570 (quinhentos e setenta) dissertações de mestrados acadêmicos, depositadas entre os anos de 2008 e 2016 em todas as instituições aqui examinadas, pertencentes ao território brasileiro. Em um enfoque da busca da compreensão do caminho metodológico foi feita uma análise de dados, observando-se os processos e técnicas utilizadas pelos pesquisadores em questão, tais como entrevistas em profundidade, observação participante e relatos experienciais. Da análise da discussão dos resultados observou-se que, das 570 (quinhentos e setenta) dissertações analisadas, apenas 13 (treze) adotaram o método fenomenológico. Diante deste fato, conclui-se que, dada a necessidade de um embasamento teórico complexo de seu pesquisador, este método é de pouca aplicação nas instituições envolvidas nesta pesquisa. Ademais, a essencialidade da postura neutra de seu pesquisador dificulta muito a caracterização das pesquisas como adotantes do método.

Non-Biological Complex Drugs (NBCDs) are complex non-biological drugs comprised of large high molecular weight molecules and, often, nanoparticular structures (including liposomes and block-copolymer micelles). In the case of NBCDs, the entire complex is the active pharmaceutical ingredient and its properties cannot be fully characterized by physicochemical analysis. Moreover, the manufacturing process is fundamental in creating the correct originator product. The same is true for generic versions of the product. A recent appraisal of approval procedures for NBCDs “follow-on products” approved in Europe shows a diversity of regulatory pathways. In fact, three different abridged application procedures, under European legislation, were used: the generic application procedure of Article 10(1), the hybrid application procedure of Article 10(3), and the biosimilar application procedure of Article 10(4). Three informed consent applications via Article 10(c) from innovator companies of glatiramer acetate and sevelamer carbonate were submitted shortly after the approval of the first follow-on products. Furthermore, a number of “well-established use” applications [via Article 10(a)] were approved for iron sucrose and iron dextran complexes. In order to protect patients from the increased risks of NBCD products and NBCD follow-on products, two complementary approaches should be considered: (i) improving the regulatory procedures and their guidance documents within the pre-registration phase, and (ii) not considering interchangeability whenever clinical data is not available. With regards to the latter, the need for adequate safety and efficacy data might also include risk management programmes within post-approval pharmacovigilance actions. This, however, would depend on a risk appraisal that must be considered for individual medicinal products, based on the nature of the submitted relevant set of safety/efficacy data.

BackgroundLoss of a spouse is a frequent occurrence in later life. While most older adults successfully process this loss and will return to a normal life, about 10% of the individuals are unable to cope, and progress to prolonged grief (PG). PG, in turn, can result in mental and physical problems including poor sleep, cardiovascular problems, depression, and suicidal tendencies. ObjectiveLEAVES (optimizing the mentaL health and resiliencE of older Adults that haVe lost thEir spouSe via blended, online therapy) is an online bereavement program that will support the prevention and treatment of PG, so that elderly mourners can continue to lead an active, meaningful, and dignified life. LEAVES will cater to secondary end users (eg, family, informal caregivers) by reducing stress. MethodsLEAVES will help older adults to process the loss of a spouse in an online environment, which consists of (1) an existing online grief self-help program LIVIA, (2) the Before You Leave program that allows for storing personal memories, (3) a virtual agent platform, and (4) an accessible front-end design. LEAVES can detect persons at risk for complications, reveal negative trends in their emotional life, and act to counter such trends. The service relies on online support whenever possible but is blended with telephone or face-to-face counseling when necessary. ResultsThe project will take place between February 2020 and January 2023 and includes a real-life evaluation in which 315 end users will use the service across 3 countries (the Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland). The evaluation of LEAVES will focus on clinical effect, its business case, and technology acceptance. The results will pave the way for smooth integration into existing care paths and reimbursement schemes. ConclusionsThe LEAVES service aims to soften the mourning process, prevents depression or social isolation, strengthens widow(er)s resilience and well-being, and quickens one’s return to societal participation.
