Characterising stellar jet asymmetries is key to setting robust constraints on jet launching models and improving our understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind jet launching. We aim to characterise the asymmetric properties of the bipolar jet coming from the Classical T Tauri Star Th 28. We combined data from integral field spectroscopy with VLT/MUSE and high-resolution spectra from VLT/X-shooter to map the optical emission line ratios in both jet lobes. We carried out a diagnostic analysis of these ratios to compare the density, electron temperature, and ionisation fraction within both lobes. The mass accretion rate was derived from the emission lines at the source and compared with the mass outflow rate derived for both lobes, using the estimated densities and measured [O I]6300 and [S II ]6731 luminosities. The blue-shifted jet exhibits a significantly higher electron temperature and moderately higher ionisation fraction than the red-shifted jet. In contrast to previous studies, we also estimated higher densities in the blue-shifted jet by a factor of ~2. These asymmetries are traced to within 160 au of the source in the line ratio maps. We estimate the mass accretion rate onto the central star and compare this with estimates of the mass outflow rates through each side of the jet. The emission line maps and diagnostic results suggest that the jet asymmetries originate close to the source and are likely to be intrinsic to the jet. Furthermore, the combined dataset offers access to a broad array of accretion tracers. In turn, this enables a more accurate estimation of the mass accretion rate, revealing a value of Macc that is higher by a factor >350 than would otherwise be determined. The aim of this work is to characterize the accretion process of the classical T Tauri Star RU Lup. We studied optical high-resolution spectroscopic observations from CHIRON and ESPRESSO, obtained simultaneously with photometric data from AAVSO and TESS. We detected a periodic modulation in the narrow component of the He I 5876 line with a period that is compatible with the stellar rotation period, indicating the presence of a compact region on the stellar surface that we identified as the footprint of the accretion shock. We show that this region is responsible for the veiling spectrum, which is made up of a continuum component plus narrow line emission. An analysis of the high-cadence TESS light curve reveals quasi-periodic oscillations on timescales shorter than the stellar rotation period, suggesting that the accretion disk in RU~Lup extends inward of the corotation radius, with a truncation radius at $\sim 2 ~ R_{\star}$. This is compatible with predictions from three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic models of accretion through a magnetic boundary layer (MBL). In this scenario, the photometric variability of RU Lup is produced by a nonstationary hot spot on the stellar surface that rotates with the Keplerian period at the truncation radius. The analysis of the broad components of selected emission lines reveals the existence of a non-axisymmetric, temperature-stratified flow around the star, in which the gas leaves the accretion disk at the truncation radius and accretes onto the star channeled by the magnetic field lines. The unusually rich metallic emission line spectrum of RU Lup might be characteristic of the MBL regime of accretion. In conclusion, the behavior of RU Lup reveals many similarities to predictions from the MBL accretion scenario. Studies of the stellar and accretion properties of classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) require comparison with photospheric spectral templates. Here we aim at expanding the currently available grid of wide-wavelength coverage observed spectra of non-accreting stars with additional new spectra and an interpolation method that allows us to obtain a continuous grid of low resolution spectra ranging from spectral type G8 to M9.5, while also mitigating observational uncertainties. This interpolated grid is then implemented in the self-consistent method to derive stellar and accretion properties of CTTS. With the new templates, we aim to estimate a lower limit on the accretion luminosities that can be obtained through a study of the UV excess emission using observed templates. We analyse the molecular photospheric features present in the VLT/X-Shooter spectra of the targets to perform a spectral classification, including estimates of their extinction. We apply a non-parametric fitting method to the full grid of observed templates to obtain an interpolated grid of templates. We use the uncertainties on our interpolated grid to estimate a lower limit on the accretion luminosity that we can measure with this method. We find that the measurable accretion luminosities ranges from $\sim 2.7$ dex lower than the stellar luminosity in M5.5 stars to $\sim 1.3$ dex lower for G8 stars. For young stars with masses of $\sim 1M_{\odot}$ and ages of 3-6 Myr this limit translates into an observational limit of mass accretion rate on the order of $10^{-10} \rm M_{\odot}/yr$. The Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs), thanks to their large apertures and cutting-edge Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) systems, promise to deliver sharper and deeper data even than the JWST. SHARP is a concept study for a near-IR (0.95-2.45 $\mu$m) spectrograph conceived to fully exploit the collecting area and the angular resolution of the upcoming generation of ELTs. In particular, SHARP is designed for the 2nd port of MORFEO@ELT. Composed of a Multi-Object Spectrograph, NEXUS, and a multi-Integral Field Unit, VESPER, MORFEO-SHARP will deliver high angular ($\sim$30 mas) and spectral (R$\simeq$300, 2000, 6000, 17000) resolution, outperforming NIRSpec@JWST (100 mas). SHARP will enable studies of the nearby Universe and the early Universe in unprecedented detail. NEXUS is fed by a configurable slit system deploying up to 30 slits with $\sim$2.4 arcsec length and adjustable width, over a field of about 1.2"$\times$1.2" (35 mas/pix). Each slit is fed by an inversion prism able to rotate by an arbitrary angle the field that can be seen by the slit. VESPER is composed of 12 probes of 1.7"$\times$1.5" each (spaxel 31 mas) probing a field 24"$\times$70". SHARP is conceived to exploit the ELTs apertures reaching the faintest flux and the sharpest angular resolution by joining the sensitivity of NEXUS and the high spatial sampling of VESPER to MORFEO capabilities. We present the first results of the JWST program PROJECT-J (PROtostellar JEts Cradle Tested with JWST ), designed to study the Class I source HH46 IRS and its outflow through NIRSpec and MIRI spectroscopy (1.66 to 28 micron). The data provide line-images (~ 6.6" in length with NIRSpec, and up to 20" with MIRI) revealing unprecedented details within the jet, the molecular outflow and the cavity. We detect, for the first time, the red-shifted jet within ~ 90 au from the source. Dozens of shock-excited forbidden lines are observed, including highly ionized species such as [Ne III] 15.5 micron, suggesting that the gas is excited by high velocity (> 80 km/s) shocks in a relatively high density medium. Images of H2 lines at different excitations outline a complex molecular flow, where a bright cavity, molecular shells, and a jet-driven bow-shock interact with and are shaped by the ambient conditions. Additional NIRCam 2 micron images resolve the HH46 IRS ~ 110 au binary system and suggest that the large asymmetries observed between the jet and the H2 wide angle emission could be due to two separate outflows being driven by the two sources. The spectra of the unresolved binary show deep ice bands and plenty of gaseous lines in absorption, likely originating in a cold envelope or disk. The time evolution of the dependence of the mass accretion rate with the stellar mass and the disk mass represents a fundamental way to understand the evolution of protoplanetary disks and the formation of planets. In this work, we present observations with X-Shooter of 26 Class II very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the Ophiuchus, Cha-I, and Upper Scorpius star-forming regions (SFRs). These new observations extend down to SpT M9 ($\sim$0.02 $M_\odot$) the measurement of the mass accretion rate in Ophiuchus and Cha-I and add 11 very-low-mass stars to the sample of objects studied with broadband spectroscopy in Upper Scorpius. We obtained their SpT, extinction and physical parameters, and we used the intensity of various emission lines to derive their accretion luminosity and mass accretion rates. Combining these new observations with data from the literature, we compare relations between accretion and stellar and disk properties of four different SFRs with different ages: Ophiuchus (1 Myr), Lupus (2 Myr), Cha-I (3 Myr), and Upper Scorpius (5-12 Myr). We find the slopes of the $L_*-L\mathrm{_{acc}}$ and $M_*-\dot{M}\mathrm{_{acc}}$ relationships to steepen between Ophiuchus, Lupus, and Cha-I and that both relationships may be better described with a single power law. We also find the relationship between the disk mass and the mass accretion rate of the stellar population to steepen with time down to the age of Upper Scorpius. Overall, we observe hints of a faster evolution into low accretion rates of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. We also find that brown dwarfs present higher $M\mathrm{_{disk}}/\dot{M}\mathrm{_{acc}}$ ratios (i.e., longer accretion depletion timescales) than stars in Ophiuchus, Lupus, and Cha-I. HM Lup is a young M-type star that accretes material from a circumstellar disk through a magnetosphere. Our aim is to study the inner disk structure of HM Lup and to characterize its variability. We used spectroscopic data from HST/STIS, X-Shooter, and ESPRESSO taken in the framework of the ULLYSES and PENELLOPE programs, together with photometric data from TESS and AAVSO. The 2021 TESS light curve shows variability typical for young stellar objects of the "accretion burster" type. The spectra cover the temporal evolution of the main burst in the 2021 TESS light curve. We compared the strength and morphology of emission lines from different species and ionization stages. We determined the mass accretion rate from selected emission lines and from the UV continuum excess emission at different epochs, and we examined its relation to the photometric light curves. The emission lines in the optical spectrum of HM Lup delineate a temperature stratification along the accretion flow. While the wings of the H I and He I lines originate near the star, the lines of species such as Na I, Mg I, Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, and Fe II are formed in an outer and colder region. The shape and periodicity of the 2019 and 2021 TESS light curves, when qualitatively compared to predictions from magnetohydrodynamic models, suggest that HM Lup was in a regime of unstable ordered accretion during the 2021 TESS observation due to an increase in the accretion rate. Although HM Lup is not an extreme accretor, it shows enhanced emission in the metallic species during this high accretion state that is produced by a density enhancement in the outer part of the accretion flow., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. The evolution of protoplanetary disks is regulated by an interplay of several processes, either internal to the system or related to the environment. As most of the stars and planets have formed in massive stellar clusters, studying the effects of UV radiation on disk evolution is of paramount importance. Here we test the impact of external photoevaporation on the evolution of disks in the $\sigma$ Orionis cluster by conducting the first combined large-scale UV to IR spectroscopic and mm-continuum survey of this region. We study a sample of 50 targets located at increasing distances from the central, OB system $\sigma$ Ori. We combine new VLT/X-Shooter spectra with new and previously published ALMA measurements of disk dust and gas fluxes and masses. We confirm the previously found decrease of $M_{\rm dust}$ in the inner $\sim$0.5 pc of the cluster. This is particularly evident when considering the disks around the more massive stars ($\ge$ 0.4 $M_{\odot}$), where those located in the inner part ($<$ 0.5 pc) have $M_{\rm dust}$ about an order of magnitude lower than the more distant ones. About half of the sample is located in the region of the $\dot{M}_{\rm acc}$ vs $M_{\rm disk}$ expected by models of external photoevaporation, namely showing shorter disk lifetimes. These are observed for all targets with projected separation from $\sigma$ Ori $<$ 0.5 pc, proving that the presence of a massive stellar system affects disk evolution. External photoevaporation is a viable mechanism to explain the observed shorter disk lifetimes and lower $M_{\rm dust}$ in the inner $\sim$0.5 pc of the cluster. Follow-up observations of the low stellar mass targets are crucial to confirm the dependence of the external photoevaporation process with stellar host mass. EX Lupi is the prototype by which EXor-type outbursts were defined. It has experienced multiple accretion-related bursts and outbursts throughout the last decades, whose study have greatly extended our knowledge about the effects of these types of events. This star experienced a new burst in 2022. We used multi-band photometry to create color-color and color-magnitude diagrams to exclude the possibility that the brightening could be explained by a decrease in extinction. We obtained VLT/X-shooter spectra to determine the Lacc and Macc during the peak of the burst and after its return to quiescence using 2 methods: empirical relationships between line luminosity and Lacc, and a slab model of the whole spectrum. We examined the 130 year light curve of EX Lupi to provide statistics on the number of outbursts experienced during this period of time. Our analysis of the data taken during the 2022 burst confirmed that a change in extinction is not responsible for the brightening. Our two approaches in calculating the Macc were in agreement, and resulted in values that are 2 orders of magnitude above what had previously been estimated, thus suggesting that EX Lupi is a strong accretor even when in quiescence. We determined that in 2022 March the Macc increased by a factor of 7 with respect to the quiescent level. We also found hints that even though the Macc had returned to almost its pre-outburst levels, certain physical properties of the gas had not returned to the quiescent values. We found that the mass accreted during this three month event was 0.8 lunar masses, which is approximately half of what is accreted during a year of quiescence. We calculated that if EX Lupi remains as active as it has been for the past 130 years, during which it has experienced at least 3 outbursts and 10 bursts, then it will deplete the mass of its circumstellar material in less than 160000 yr., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables. Observing the spatial distribution and excitation processes of atomic and molecular gas in the inner regions (< 20 au) of young (< 10 Myr) protoplanetary disks helps us to understand the conditions for the formation and evolution of planetary systems. In the framework of the PENELLOPE and ULLYSES projects, we aim to characterize the atomic and molecular component of protoplanetary disks in a sample of 11 Classical T Tauri Stars (CTTs) of the Orion OB1 and $\sigma$-Orionis associations. We analyzed the flux-calibrated optical-forbidden lines and the fluorescent ultraviolet $\rm H_2$ progressions using spectra acquired with ESPRESSO at VLT, UVES at VLT and HST-COS. Line morphologies were characterized through Gaussian decomposition. We then focused on the properties of the narrow low-velocity (FWHM < 40 $km$ $s^{-1}$ and |$v_p$| < 30 $km$ $s^{-1}$) component (NLVC) of the [OI] 630 nm line, compared with the properties of the UV-$\rm H_2$ lines. We found that the [OI]630 NLVC and the UV-$\rm H_2$ lines are strongly correlated in terms of peak velocities, full width at half maximum, and luminosity. The luminosities of the [OI]630 NLVC and UV-$\rm H_2$ correlate with the accretion luminosity with a similar slope, as well as with the luminosity of the CIV 154.8, 155 nm doublet. We discuss such correlations in the framework of the currently suggested excitation processes for the [OI]630 NLVC. Our results can be interpreted in a scenario in which the [OI]630 NLVC and UV-$\rm H_2$ have a common disk origin with a partially overlapped radial extension. We also suggest that the excitation of the [OI] NLVC is mainly induced by stellar FUV continuum photons more than being of thermal origin. We characterize twelve young stellar objects (YSOs) located in the Lupus I region, spatially overlapping with the Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL) sub-stellar association. The aim of this study is to understand whether the Lupus I cloud has more members than what has been claimed so far in the literature and gain a deeper insight into the global properties of the region. We selected our targets using Gaia DR2 catalog, based on their consistent kinematic properties with the Lupus I bona fide members. In our sample of twelve YSOs observed by X-Shooter, we identified ten Lupus I members. We could not determine the membership status of two of our targets, namely Gaia DR2 6014269268967059840 and 2MASS J15361110-3444473 due to technical issues. We found out that four of our targets are accretors, among them 2MASS J15551027-3455045, with a mass of ~0.03 M_Sun, is one of the least massive accretors in the Lupus complex to date. Several of our targets (including accretors) are formed in-situ and off-cloud with respect to the main filaments of Lupus I, hence, our study may hint that there are diffused populations of M-dwarfs around Lupus I main filaments. In spite of the advent of extremely large telescopes in the UV/optical/NIR range, the current generation of 8-10m facilities is likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. The Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) has been designed to provide high-efficiency (>40%) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R>20,000, although a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R ~ 7,000 is also planned. CUBES will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics, providing access to key lines of stellar spectra: a tremendous diversity of iron-peak and heavy elements, lighter elements (in particular Beryllium) and light-element molecules (CO, CN, OH), as well as Balmer lines and the Balmer jump (particularly important for young stellar objects). The UV range is also critical in extragalactic studies: the circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, the contribution of different types of sources to the cosmic UV background, the measurement of H2 and primordial Deuterium in a regime of relatively transparent intergalactic medium, and follow-up of explosive transients. The CUBES project completed a Phase A conceptual design in June 2021 and has now entered the Phase B dedicated to detailed design and construction. First science operations are planned for 2028. Transiting planets around young stars are key benchmarks for our understanding of planetary systems. One of such candidates was identified around the K dwarf HD 18599 by TESS, labeled as TOI-179. We present the confirmation of the transiting planet and the characterization of the host star and of the TOI-179 system over a broad range of angular separations. To this aim, we exploited the TESS photometric time series, intensive radial velocity monitoring performed with HARPS, and deep high-contrast imaging observations obtained with SPHERE and NACO at VLT. The inclusion of Gaussian processes regression analysis is effective to properly model the magnetic activity of the star and identify the Keplerian signature of the transiting planet. The star, with an age of 400+-100 Myr, is orbited by a transiting planet with period 4.137436 days, mass 24+-7 Mearth, radius 2.62 (+0.15-0.12) Rearth, and significant eccentricity (0.34 (+0.07-0.09)). Adaptive optics observations identified a low-mass companion at the boundary between brown dwarfs and very low mass stars (mass derived from luminosity 83 (+4-6) Mjup) at a very small projected separation (84.5 mas, 3.3 au at the distance of the star). Coupling the imaging detection with the long-term radial velocity trend and the astrometric signature, we constrained the orbit of the low mass companion, identifying two families of possible orbital solutions. (Pre-)transitional disks show gaps and cavities that can be related with on-going planet formation. According to theory, young embedded planets can accrete material from the circumplanetary and circumstellar disks, so that they could be detected in accretion tracers, like the H$_{\alpha}$ emission line. In this work, we present spectral angular differential imaging AO-assisted observations of five (pre-)transitional disks obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). They were obtained in the H$_{\alpha}$ line and the adjacent continuum. We have combined spectral and angular differential imaging techniques to increase the contrast in the innermost regions close to the star, and search for the signature of young accreting protoplanets. As a result, the reduced images do not show any clear H$_{\alpha}$ point source around any of the targets. We report faint H$_{\alpha}$ emissions around TW Hya and HD163296: while the former is most probably an artifact related with a spike, the nature of the latter remains unclear. The spectral and angular differential images yield contrasts of 6--8 magnitudes at separations of $\sim$ 100 mas from the central stars, except in the case of LkCa15, with values of $\sim$3 mag. We have estimated upper limits to the accretion luminosity of potential protoplanets, obtaining that planetary models provide an average value of $L_{\rm acc} \sim 10^{-4}$ $L_{\odot}$ at 200 mas, which is $\sim$2 orders of magnitude higher than the $L_{\rm acc}$ estimated from the extrapolation of the $L_{H_{\alpha}}$ - $L_{acc}$ stellar relationship. In the framework of the GIARPS@TNG High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars (GHOsT) project, we study the accretion properties of 37 Classical T Tauri Stars of the Taurus-Auriga star forming region (SFR) with the aim of characterizing their relation with the properties of the central star, of jets and disk winds, and of the global disk structure, in synergy with complementary ALMA millimiter observations. We derive stellar parameters, optical veiling, accretion luminosity ($\rm L_{acc}$) and mass accretion rate ($\rm \dot M_{acc}$) in a homogeneous and self-consistent way using high-resolution spectra acquired at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo with the HARPS-N and GIANO spectrographs, and flux-calibrated based on contemporaneous low-resolution spectroscopic and photometric ancillary observations. The $\rm L_{acc}$-$\rm L_{\star}$, $\rm \dot{M}_{acc}$-$\rm M_{\star}$ and $\rm \dot{M}_{acc}$-$\rm M_{disk}$ relationships of the Taurus sample are provided and compared with those of the coeval SFRs of Lupus and Chamaeleon I. Our results demonstrate the potential of contemporaneous optical and near-infrared high-resolution spectroscopy to simultaneously provide precise measurements of stellar and accretion/wind properties of young stars., Comment: 30 pages, 18 figures, 6 tables. The He I 1 micron line is a high excitation line which allows us to probe the innermost regions of protostellar disks, and to trace both accreting and outflowing material. We use X-Shooter observations of a sample of 107 young stars in the Lupus (1-3 Myr) and Upper Scorpius (5-10 Myr) star-forming regions to search for correlations between the line properties, as well as the disk inclination and accretion luminosity. We identified eight distinct profile types in the sample. We fitted Gaussian curves to the line features to measure the maximum velocities traced in absorption, the full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of the line features, and the Gaussian area of the features. We compare the proportion of each profile type in our sample to previous studies in Taurus. We find significant variations between Taurus and Lupus in the proportion of P Cygni and inverse P Cygni profiles, and between Lupus and Upper Scorpius in the number of emission-only and combination profile types. We find that the blue-shifted absorption features appear less blue-shifted at disk inclinations close to edge-on, but no such trend with inclination is observed in sources with only red-shifted features. Higher accretion rates were observed in sources with strong blue-shifted features which, along with the changes in the proportions of each profile type observed in the two regions, indicates that younger sources may drive stronger jets or winds. Overall, we observe variations in the proportion of each profile type and in the line properties which indicates and evolution of accretion and ejection signatures over time, and with source properties. These results confirm past works and models of the He I line, but for a larger sample and for multiple star-forming regions. In the era of Extremely Large Telescopes, the current generation of 8-10m facilities are likely to remain competitive at ground-UV wavelengths for the foreseeable future. With the design focusing on maximizing the instrument throughput (ensuring a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) ~20 per high-resolution element at 313 nm for U ~18.5 mag objects in 1h of observations), it will offer new possibilities in many fields of astrophysics, providing access to key lines of stellar spectra: a tremendous diversity of iron-peak and heavy elements, lighter elements (in particular Beryllium) and light-element molecules (CO, CN, OH), as well as Balmer lines and the Balmer jump (particularly important for young stellar objects). The UV range is also critical in extragalactic studies: the circumgalactic medium of distant galaxies, the contribution of different types of sources to the cosmic UV background, the measurement of H2 and primordial Deuterium in a regime of relatively transparent intergalactic medium, and follow-up of explosive transients. The CUBES project completed a Phase A conceptual design in June 2021 and has now entered the detailed design and construction phase. The processes regulating protoplanetary disk evolution are constrained by studying how mass accretion rates scale with stellar and disk properties. The spread in these relations can be used as a constraint to the models of disk evolution, but only if the impact of accretion variability is correctly accounted for. While the effect of variability might be substantial in the embedded phases of star formation, it is often considered limited at later stages. Here we report on the observed large variation in the accretion rate for one target, XX Cha, and we discuss the impact on population studies of classical T Tauri stars. The mass accretion rate determined by fitting the UV-to-near-infrared spectrum in recent X-Shooter observations is compared with the one measured with the same instrument 11 years before. XX Cha displays an accretion variability of almost 2 dex between 2010 and 2021. Although the timescales on which this variability happens are uncertain, XX Cha displays an extreme accretion variability for a classical T Tauri star. If such behavior is common among classical T Tauri stars, possibly on longer timescales than previously probed, it could be relevant for discussing the disk evolution models constrained by the observed spread in accretion rates. With an unprecedented astrometric and photometric data precision, Gaia EDR3 gives us, for the first time, the opportunity to systematically detect and map in the optical bands, the low mass populations of the star forming regions (SFRs) in the Milky Way. We provide a catalogue of the Gaia EDR3 data (photometry, proper motions and parallaxes) of the young stellar objects (YSOs) identified in the Galactic Plane (|b|<30 deg) within about 1.5 kpc. The catalogue of the SFRs to which they belong is also provided to study the properties of the very young clusters and put them in the context of the Galaxy structure. We applied the machine learning unsupervised clustering algorithm DBSCAN on a sample of Gaia EDR3 data photometrically selected on the region where very young stars (t<10 Myr) are expected to be found, with the aim to identify co-moving and spatially consistent stellar clusters. A subsample of 52 clusters, selected among the 7323 found with DBSCAN, has been used as template data set, to identify very young clusters from the pattern of the observed color-absolute magnitude diagrams through a pattern match process. We find 124440 candidate YSOs clustered in 354 SFRs and stellar clusters younger than 10 Myr and within about 1.5 Kpc. In addition, 65863 low mass members of 322 stellar clusters located within about 500 pc and with ages 10 Myr

The science case on studies of accretion and outflows in low-mass ($<$1.5 $M_{\odot}$) young stellar objects (YSOs) with the new CUBES instrument is presented. We show the need for a high-sensitivity, near-ultraviolet (NUV) spectrograph like CUBES, with a resolving power at least four times that of X-Shooter and combined with UVES via a fibrelink for simultaneous observations. Simulations with the CUBES exposure time calculator and the end-to-end software show that a significant gain in signal-to -noise can be achieved compared to current instruments, for both the spectral continuum and emission lines, including for relatively embedded YSOs. Our simulations also show that the low-resolution mode of CUBES will be able to observe much fainter YSOs (V $\sim$22 mag) in the NUV than we can today, allowing us extend studies to YSOs with background-limited magnitudes. The performance of CUBES in terms of sensitivity in the NUV will provide important new insights into the evolution of circumstellar disks, by studying the accretion, jets/winds and photo-evaporation processes, down to the low-mass brown dwarf regime. CUBES will also open-up new science as it will be able to observe targets that are several magnitudes fainter than those reachable with current instruments, facilitating studies of YSOs at distances of $\sim$ kpc scale. This means a step-change in the field of low-mass star formation, as it will be possible to expand the science case from relatively local star-forming regions to a large swathe of distances within the Milky Way.

We report the discovery and characterization of a new symbiotic star of the accreting-only variety, which we observed in the optical/near-infrared (NIR) with VLT/X-Shooter and in the X-rays/ultraviolet with Swift/UVOT+XRT. The new symbiotic star, THA 15-31, was previously described as a pre-main sequence star belonging to the Lupus~3 association. Our observations, ancillary data, and Gaia EDR3 parallax indicate that THA 15-31 is a symbiotic star composed of an M6III red giant and an accreting companion, is subject to E(B-V)=0.38 reddening, and is located at a distance of ~12 kpc and at 1.8 kpc above the Galactic plane in the outskirts of the Bulge. The luminosity of the accreting companion is ~100 Lsun, placing THA 15-31 among the symbiotic stars accreting at a high rate (2.5e-08 Msun/yr if the accretion is occurring on a white dwarf of 1 Msun). The observed emission lines originate primarily from HI, HeI, and FeII, with no HeII or other high-excitation lines observed; a sharp central absorption superimposed on the Balmer emission lines is observed, while all other lines have a simple Gaussian-like profile. The emission from the companion dominates over the M6III red giant at $U$ and $B$-band wavelengths, and is consistent with an origin primarily in an optically thick accretion disk. No significant photometric variability is observed at optical or NIR wavelengths, suggesting either a face-on orbital orientation and/or that the red giant is far from Roche-lobe filling conditions. The profile of emission lines supports a low orbital inclination if they form primarily in the accretion disk. An excess emission is present in AllWISE W3 (12 micron) and W4 (22 micron) data, radiating a luminosity ~35 Lsun, consistent with thermal emission from optically thin circumstellar dust., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Hubble UV Legacy Library of Young Stars as Essential Standards (ULLYSES) Director's Discretionary Program of low-mass pre-main-sequence stars, coupled with forthcoming data from ALMA and JWST, will provide the foundation to revolutionize our understanding of the relationship between young stars and their protoplanetary disks. A comprehensive evaluation of the physics of disk evolution and planet formation requires understanding the intricate relationships between mass accretion, mass outflow, and disk structure. Here we describe the Outflows and Disks around Young Stars: Synergies for the Exploration of ULLYSES Spectra (ODYSSEUS) Survey and present initial results of the classical T Tauri Star CVSO 109 in Orion OB1b as a demonstration of the science that will result from the survey. ODYSSEUS will analyze the ULLYSES spectral database, ensuring a uniform and systematic approach in order to (1) measure how the accretion flow depends on the accretion rate and magnetic structures, (2) determine where winds and jets are launched and how mass-loss rates compare with accretion, and (3) establish the influence of FUV radiation on the chemistry of the warm inner regions of planet-forming disks. ODYSSEUS will also acquire and provide contemporaneous observations at X-ray, optical, NIR, and millimeter wavelengths to enhance the impact of the ULLYSES data. Our goal is to provide a consistent framework to accurately measure the level and evolution of mass accretion in protoplanetary disks, the properties and magnitudes of inner-disk mass loss, and the influence of UV radiation fields that determine ionization levels and drive disk chemistry., Comment: accepted to ApJ

We present results of our study of the close pre-main sequence spectroscopic binary CVSO 104 in Ori OB1, based on data obtained within the PENELLOPE legacy program. We derive, for the first time, the orbital elements of the system and the stellar parameters of the two components. The system is composed of two early M-type stars and has an orbital period of about 5 days and a mass ratio of 0.92, but contrarily to expectations does not appear to have a tertiary companion. Both components have been (quasi-)synchronized, but the orbit is still very eccentric. The spectral energy distribution clearly displays a significant infrared excess compatible with a circumbinary disk. The analysis of HeI and Balmer line profiles, after the removal of the composite photospheric spectrum, reveals that both components are accreting at a similar level. We also observe excess emission in H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$, which appears redshifted or blueshifted by more than 100 km/s with respect to the mass center of the system depending on the orbital phase. This additional emission could be connected with accretion structures, such as funnels of matter from the circumbinary disk. We also analyze the optical companion located at about 2".4 from the spectroscopic binary. The mass-accretion rate, Macc, is a crucial parameter for the study of the evolution of accretion disks around young low-mass stellar objects (YSOs) and for planet formation studies. The Taurus star forming region (SFR) is rich in pre-main sequence (PMS) stars, most of them of the T Tauri class. A variety of methodologies have been used in the past to measure mass accretion in samples of YSOs in Taurus, but despite being a general benchmark for star formation studies, a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the Taurus T Tauri population, where the stellar and accretion properties are derived homogeneously and simultaneously, is still missing. As part of the GIARPS High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars (GHOsT) project, here we present a pilot study of the stellar and accretion properties of seven YSOs in Taurus using the spectrograph GIARPS at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). Contemporaneous low-resolution spectroscopic and photometric ancillary observations allow us to perform an accurate flux calibration of the high-resolution spectra. The simultaneity of the high-resolution, wide-band spectroscopic observations, from the optical to the near-infrared (NIR), the veiling measurements in such wide spectral range, and many well-calibrated emission line diagnostics allows us to derive the stellar and accretion properties of the seven YSOs in a homogeneous and self-consistent way. The procedures and methodologies presented here will be adopted in future works for the analysis of the complete GHOsT data set. We discuss the accretion properties of the seven YSOs in comparison with the 90\% complete sample of YSOs in the Lupus SFR and investigate possibilities for the origin of the continuum excess emission in the NIR. }

The evolution of young stars and disks is driven by the interplay of several processes, notably accretion and ejection of material. Critical to correctly describe the conditions of planet formation, these processes are best probed spectroscopically. About five-hundred orbits of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are being devoted in 2020-2022 to the ULLYSES public survey of about 70 low-mass (M<2Msun) young (age<10 Myr) stars at UV wavelengths. Here we present the PENELLOPE Large Program that is being carried out at the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) to acquire, contemporaneous to HST, optical ESPRESSO/UVES high-resolution spectra to investigate the kinematics of the emitting gas, and UV-to-NIR X-Shooter medium-resolution flux-calibrated spectra to provide the fundamental parameters that HST data alone cannot provide, such as extinction and stellar properties. The data obtained by PENELLOPE have no proprietary time, and the fully reduced spectra are made available to the whole community. Here, we describe the data and the first scientific analysis of the accretion properties for the sample of thirteen targets located in the Orion OB1 association and in the sigma-Orionis cluster, observed in Nov-Dec 2020. We find that the accretion rates are in line with those observed previously in similarly young star-forming regions, with a variability on a timescale of days of <3. The comparison of the fits to the continuum excess emission obtained with a slab model on the X-Shooter spectra and the HST/STIS spectra shows a shortcoming in the X-Shooter estimates of <10%, well within the assumed uncertainty. Its origin can be either a wrong UV extinction curve or due to the simplicity of this modelling, and will be investigated in the course of the PENELLOPE program. Large surveys with new-generation high-contrast imaging instruments are needed to derive the frequency and properties of exoplanet populations with separations from $\sim$5 to 300 AU. A careful assessment of the stellar properties is crucial for a proper understanding of when, where, and how frequently planets form, and how they evolve. The sensitivity of detection limits to stellar age makes this a key parameter for direct imaging surveys. We describe the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanets (SHINE), the largest direct imaging planet-search campaign initiated at the VLT in 2015 in the context of the SPHERE Guaranteed Time Observations of the SPHERE consortium. In this first paper we present the selection and the properties of the complete sample of stars surveyed with SHINE, focusing on the targets observed during the first phase of the survey (from February 2015 to February 2017). This early sample composed of 150 stars is used to perform a preliminary statistical analysis of the SHINE data, deferred to two companion papers presenting the survey performance, main discoveries, and the preliminary statistical constraints set by SHINE. Based on a large database collecting the stellar properties of all young nearby stars in the solar vicinity (including kinematics, membership to moving groups, isochrones, lithium abundance, rotation, and activity), we selected the original sample of 800 stars that were ranked in order of priority according to their sensitivity for planet detection in direct imaging with SPHERE. The properties of the stars that are part of the early statistical sample were revisited, including for instance measurements from the GAIA Data Release 2.

Discovering wide companions of stellar systems allows us to constrain the dynamical environment and age of the latter. We studied four probable wide companions of four different stellar systems. The central stars are V4046 Sgr, HIP 74865, HIP 65426, and HIP 73145, and their probable wide companions are 2MASS J18152222-3249329, 2MASS J15174874-3028484, 2MASS J13242119-5129503, and 2MASS J14571503-3543505 respectively. V4046 Sgr is a member of $\beta$-Pictoris Moving Group while the rest of the stellar systems are acknowledged as members of the Scorpius-Centaurus association. The selected stellar systems are particularly interesting because all of them are already known to possess a low-mass companion and/or a spatially resolved disk. Identifying wider companions of these stars can improve their eligibility as benchmarks for understanding the formation channels of various triple systems, and can help us to determine the orbits of their possibly undiscovered inner, wider companions in case of higher multiplicity. We find that 2MASS J15174874-3028484 (0.11 $M_{\odot}$, 7.4$\pm$0.5 Myr), an already recognized pre-main sequence (PMS) member of Scorpius-Centaurus association, is a highly probable wide companion of HIP 74865. 2MASS J13242119-5129503 (0.04 $M_{\odot}$, 16$\pm$2.2 Myr) is ruled out as a plausible wide companion of HIP 65426, but confirmed to be a new sub-stellar member of the Scorpius-Centaurus association. 2MASS J14571503-3543505 (0.02 $M_{\odot}$, 17.75$\pm$4.15 Myr) is a probable sub-stellar member of the same association, but we cannot confirm whether or not it is gravitationally bound to HIP 73145. 2MASS J18152222-3249329 (0.3 $M_{\odot}$, older than 150 Myr) is determined to be a mildly active main sequence (MS) star, much older than members of $\beta$-Pictoris Moving Group, and unbound to V4046 Sgr despite their similar kinematic features., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 8 tables

In the framework of the GIARPS High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars (GHOsT) project, we aim to characterize the atomic and molecular winds in a sample of classical T Tauri stars (CTTs) of the Taurus-Auriga region. We analyzed the flux calibrated [OI] 630 nm and $\rm H_2$ 2.12 $\rm \mu m$ lines in a sample of 36 CTTs observed at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo with the HARPS and GIANO spectrographs. We decomposed the line profiles into different kinematic Gaussian components and focused on the most frequently detected component, the narrow low-velocity (v$\rm_p < 20$ $\rm km$ $\rm s^{-1}$) component (NLVC). We found that the $\rm H_2$ line is detected in 17 sources ($\sim 50 \%$ detection rate), and [OI] is detected in all sources but one. The NLV components of the $\rm H_2$ and [OI] emission are kinematically linked, with a strong correlation between the peak velocities and the full widths at half maximum of the two lines. Assuming Keplerian broadening, we found that the [OI] NVLC originates from a disk region between 0.05 and 20 au and that of $\rm H_2$ in a region from 2 and 20 au. We did not find any clear correlation between v$\rm_p$ of the $\rm H_2$ and [OI] NVLC and the outer disk inclination. This result is in line with previous studies. Our results suggest that molecular and neutral atomic emission in disk winds originate from regions that might overlap, and that the survival of molecular winds in disks strongly depends on the gas exposure to the radiation from the central star. We report on the discovery of periodic dips in the multiband lightcurve of ISO-ChaI 52, a young stellar object in the Chamaeleon I dark cloud. This is one among the peculiar objects that display very low or negligible accretion both in their UV continuum and spectral lines, although they present a remarkable infrared excess emission characteristic of optically-thick circumstellar disks. We have analyzed a VLT/X-Shooter spectrum with the tool ROTFIT to determine the stellar parameters. The latter, along with photometry from our campaign with the REM telescope and from the literature, have allowed us to model the spectral energy distribution and to estimate the size and temperature of the inner and outer disk. From the rotational period of the star/disk system of 3.45 days we estimate a disk inclination of 36$^\circ$. The depth of the dips in different bands has been used to gain information about the occulting material. A single extinction law is not able to fit the observed behavior, while a two-component model of a disk warp composed of a dense region with a gray extinction and an upper layer with an ISM-type extinction provides a better fit of the data., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures; accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Determining the mechanisms that drive the evolution of protoplanetary disks is a necessary step to understand how planets form. Here we measured the mass accretion rate for young stellar objects at age >5 Myr, a critical test for the current models of disk evolution. We present the analysis of the spectra of 36 targets in the ~5-10 Myr old Upper Scorpius region for which disk masses were measured with ALMA. We find that the mass accretion rates in this sample of old but still survived disks are similarly high as those of the younger (<3 Myr old) star-forming regions of Lupus and Cha I, when considering the dependence on stellar and disk mass. In particular, several disks show high mass accretion rates >10^-9 Msun/yr while having low disk masses. Furthermore, the median values of the measured mass accretion rates in the disk mass ranges where our sample is complete at a level ~60-80% are compatible in these three regions. At the same time, the spread of mass accretion rates at any given disk mass is still >0.9 dex even at age>5 Myr. These results are in contrast with simple models of viscous evolution, which would predict that the values of the mass accretion rate diminish with time, and a tighter correlation with disk mass at age>5 Myr. Similarly, simple models of internal photoevaporation cannot reproduce the observed mass accretion rates, while external photoevaporation might explain the low disk masses and high accretion rates. A partial possible solution to the discrepancy with the viscous models is that the gas-to-dust ratio of the disks at >5 Myr is significantly different and higher than the canonical 100, as suggested by some dust and gas disk evolution models. The results shown here require the presence of several inter-playing processes, such as detailed dust evolution, external photoevaporation and possibly MHD winds, to explain the secular evolution of protoplanetary disks., Comment: Accepted on Astronomy & Astrophysics. Very recently, a second companion on wider orbit has been discovered around GQ Lup. This is a low-mass accreting star partially obscured by a disk seen at high inclination. If detected, this disk may be compared to the known disk around the primary. We detected this disk on archive HST and WISE data. The extended spectral energy distribution provided by these data confirms the presence of accretion from Halpha emission and UV excess, and shows an IR excess attributable to a warm disk. In addition, we resolved the disk on the HST images. This is found to be roughly aligned with the disk of the primary. Both of them are roughly aligned with the Lupus I dust filament containing GQ Lup., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Substellar companions at wide separation around stars hosting planets or brown dwarfs (BDs) yet close enough for their formation in the circumstellar disc are of special interest. In this letter we report the discovery of a wide (projected separation $\sim$16.0arcsec, or 2400 AU, and position angle 114.61$^\circ$) companion of the GQ Lup A-B system, most likely gravitationally bound to it. A VLT/X-Shooter spectrum shows that this star, 2MASS J15491331-3539118, is a bonafide low-mass ($\sim$0.15 M$_\odot$) young stellar object (YSO) with stellar and accretion/ejection properties typical of Lupus YSOs of similar mass, and with kinematics consistent with that of the GQ Lup A-B system. A possible scenario for the formation of the triple system is that GQ Lup A and 2MASS J15491331-3539118 formed by fragmentation of a turbulent core in the Lup I filament, while GQ Lup B, the BD companion of GQ Lup A at 0.7arcsec, formed in situ by the fragmentation of the circumprimary disc. The recent discoveries that stars form along cloud filaments would favour the scenario of turbulent fragmentation for the formation of GQ Lup A and 2MASS J15491331-3539118., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We present a detailed analysis of the extended structure detected around the young and close-by Herbig Ae/Be star RCrA. This is a young triple system with an intermediate mass central binary whose separation is of the order of a few tens of the radii of the individual components, and an M-star companion at about 30 au. Our aim is to understand the nature of the extended structure by means of combining integral-field and high-resolution spectroscopy. We conducted the analysis based on FEROS archival optical spectroscopy data and adaptive optics images and integral-field spectra obtained with SINFONI and SPHERE at the VLT. The observations reveal a complex extended structure that is composed of at least two components: a non-uniform wide cavity whose walls are detected in continuum emission up to 400~au, and a collimated wiggling-jet detected in the emission lines of Helium and Hydrogen. Moreover, the presence of [FeII] emission projected close to the cavity walls suggests the presence of a slower moving wind, most likely a disk wind. The multiple components of the optical forbidden lines also indicate the presence of a high-velocity jet co-existing with a slow wind. We constructed a geometrical model of the collimated jet flowing within the cavity using intensity and velocity maps, finding that its wiggling is consistent with the orbital period of the central binary. The cavity and the jet do not share the same position angle, suggesting that the jet is itself experiencing a precession motion possibly due to the wide M-dwarf companion. We propose a scenario that closely agrees with the general expectation of a magneto-centrifugal-launched jet. The mechanism for jet formation in the disks of T Tauri stars is poorly understood. Observational benchmarks to launching models can be provided by tracing the physical properties of the kinematic components of the wind and jet in the inner 100 au of the disk surface. In the framework of the GHOsT (GIARPS High-resolution Observations of T Tauri stars) project, we aim to perform a multi-line analysis of the velocity components of the gas in the jet acceleration zone. We analyzed the GIARPS-TNG spectra of six objects in the Taurus-Auriga complex (RY Tau, DG Tau, DL Tau, HN Tau, DO Tau, RW Aur A). Thanks to the combined high-spectral resolution (R=50000-115000) and wide spectral coverage (~400-2400 nm) we observed several O, S+, N, N+, and Fe+ forbidden lines spanning a large range of excitation and ionization conditions. In four objects (DG Tau, HN Tau, DO Tau, RW Aur A), temperature (T_e), electron and total density (n_e, n_H), and fractional ionization (x_e) were derived as a function of velocity through an excitation and ionization model. The abundance of gaseous iron, X(Fe), a probe of the dust content in the jet, was derived in selected velocity channels. The physical parameters vary smoothly with velocity, suggesting a common origin for the different kinematic components. In DG Tau and HN Tau, T_e, x_e, and X(Fe) increase with velocity (roughly from 6000 K, 0.05, 10% X(Fe)_sun to 15000 K, 0.6, 90% X(Fe)_sun). This trend is in agreement with disk-wind models in which the jet is launched from regions of the disk at different radii. In DO Tau and RW Aur A, we infer x_e < 0.1, n_H ~10^6-7 cm^-3, and X(Fe) <~ X(Fe)_sun at all velocities. These findings are tentatively explained by the formation of these jets from dense regions inside the inner, gaseous disk, or as a consequence of their high degree of collimation., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We investigate ongoing accretion activity in young stars in the TW Hydrae association (TWA, ~8-10 Myr), an ideal target to probe the final stages of disk accretion down to brown dwarf masses. Our sample comprises eleven TWA members with infrared excess, amounting to 85% of the total TWA population with disks, with spectral types between M0 and M9, and masses between 0.58 and 0.02 Msol. We employed homogeneous spectroscopic data from 300 to 2500 nm, obtained with X-shooter, to derive individual extinction, stellar parameters, and accretion parameters simultaneously. We then examined Balmer lines and forbidden emission lines to probe the physics of the star-disk interaction environment. We detected signatures of ongoing accretion for 70% of our TWA targets. This implies a fraction of accretors of 13-17% across the entire TWA (accounting for potentially accreting members not included in our survey). The spectral emission associated with these stars reveals a more evolved stage of these accretors compared to younger PMS populations: (i) a large fraction (~50%) exhibit nearly symmetric, narrow H_alpha line profiles; (ii) over 80% exhibit Balmer decrements consistent with moderate accretion and optically thin emission; (iii) less than a third exhibit forbidden line emission in [O I] 6300A, indicative of winds and outflows activity. However, the distribution in accretion rates (Mdot) derived for the TWA sample follows closely that of younger regions for Mstar~0.1-0.3 Msun. An overall correlation between Mdot and Mstar is detected, best reproduced by Mdot~Mstar^(2.1+/-0.5). At least in the lowest Mstar regimes, stars that still retain a disk at ages ~8-10 Myr are found to exhibit statistically similar, albeit moderate, accretion levels as those measured around younger objects. The mass accretion rate is a crucial parameter for the study of the evolution of accretion discs around young low-mass stellar and substellar objects (YSOs). We revisit the case of MYLup, an object where VLT/X-Shooter data suggested a negligible mass accretion rate, and show it to be accreting on a level similar to other ClassII YSOs in Lupus based on HST observations. In our HST-COS and -STIS spectra, we find many emission lines, as well as substantial FUV continuum excess emission, which can be ascribed to active accretion. The total luminosity of the CIV 1549A doublet is 4.1$\times10^{-4}$ Lsun. Using scalings between accretion luminosity, Lacc, and CIV luminosity from the literature, we derive Lacc $\sim$2$\times10^{-1}$ Lsun, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than the upper limit estimated from the X-Shooter observations. We discuss possible reasons for the X-Shooter-HST discrepancy, the most plausible being that the low contrast between the continuum excess emission and the photospheric+chromospheric emission at optical wavelengths in MYLup hampered detection of excess emission. The luminosity of the FUV continuum and CIV lines, strong H$_{2}$ fluorescence, and a "1600 A Bump" place MYLup in the class of accreting objects with gas-rich discs. So far, MYLup is the only peculiar case in which a significant difference between the HST and X-Shooter Macc estimates exists that is not ascribable to variability. The mass accretion rate inferred from the revisited Lacc estimate is Macc $\sim$ 1( $^{+1.5}_{-0.5}$ )$\times10^{-8}$ Msun/yr. This value is consistent with the typical value derived for accreting YSOs of similar mass in Lupus and points to less clearing of the inner disc than indicated by near- and mid-infrared observations. R~CrA is the brightest member of the Coronet star forming region and it is the closest Herbig AeBe star with a spectrum dominated by emission lines. Its luminosity has been monitored since the end of the 19th century, but the origin of its variability, which shows a stable period of $65.767\pm 0.007$~days, is still unknown. We studied photometric and spectroscopic data for this star to investigate the nature of the variability of R~CrA. We exploited the fact that near infrared luminosity of the Herbig AeBe stars is roughly proportional to the total luminosity of the stars to derive the absorption, and then mass and age of R~CrA. In addition, we model the periodic modulation of the light curve as due to partial attenuation of a central binary by a circumbinary disk. This model reproduces very well the observations. We found that the central object in R~CrA is a very young ($1.5\pm 1.5$~Myr), highly absorbed ($A_V=5.47\pm 0.4$~mag) binary; we obtain masses of $M_A=3.02\pm 0.43$~M$_\odot$ and $M_B=2.32\pm 0.35$~M$_\odot$ for the two components. We propose that the secular decrease of the R~CrA apparent luminosity is due to a progressive increase of the disk absorption. This might be related to precession of a slightly inclined disk caused by the recently discovered M-dwarf companion. In recent years, the disk populations in a number of young star-forming regions have been surveyed with ALMA. Understanding the disk properties and their correlation with those of the central star is critical to understand planet formation. In particular, a decrease of the average measured disk dust mass with the age of the region has been observed. We conducted high-sensitivity continuum ALMA observations of 43 Class II young stellar objects in CrA at 1.3 mm (230 GHz). The typical spatial resolution is 0.3". The continuum fluxes are used to estimate the dust masses of the disks, and a survival analysis is performed to estimate the average dust mass. We also obtained new VLT/X-Shooter spectra for 12 of the objects in our sample. 24 disks are detected, and stringent limits have been put on the average dust mass of the non-detections. Accounting for the upper limits, the average disk mass in CrA is $6\pm3\,\rm M_\oplus$, significantly lower than that of disks in other young (1-3 Myr) star forming regions (e.g. Lupus) and appears consistent with the 5-10 Myr old Upper Sco. The position of the stars in our sample on the HR diagram, however, seems to confirm that that CrA has age similar to Lupus. Neither external photoevaporation nor a lower than usual stellar mass distribution can explain the low disk masses. On the other hand, a low-mass disk population could be explained if the disks are small, which could happen if the parent cloud has a low temperature or intrinsic angular momentum, or if the the angular momentum of the cloud is removed by some physical mechanism such as magnetic braking. The study of contemporaneous variations of the continuum flux and emission lines is of great importance to understand the different astrophysical processes at work in T Tauri stars. In this paper we present the results of a simultaneous $BVRI$ and H$\alpha$ photometric monitoring, contemporaneous to medium-resolution spectroscopy of six T Tauri stars in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region. We have characterized the H$\alpha$ photometric system using synthetic templates and the contemporaneous spectra of the targets. We show that we can achieve a precision corresponding to 2$-$3 \AA\ in the H$\alpha$ equivalent width, in typical observing conditions. The spectral analysis has allowed us to determine the basic stellar parameters and the values of quantities related to the accretion. In particular, we have measured a significant veiling only for the three targets with the strongest H$\alpha$ emission (T Tau, FM Tau, and DG Tau). The broad-band photometric variations are found to be in the range 0.05$-$0.70 mag and are often paired to variations in the H$\alpha$ intensity, which becomes stronger when the stellar continuum is weaker. In addition, we have mostly observed a redder $V-I$ and a bluer $B-V$ color as the stars become fainter. For most of the targets, the timescales of these variations seem to be longer than the rotation period. One exception is T Tau, for which the broad-band photometry varies with the rotation period. The most plausible interpretation of these photometric and H$\alpha$ variations is that they are due to non-stationary mass accretion onto the stars, but rotational modulation can play a major role in some cases., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Acta Astronomica

Extensive surveys of star-forming regions with Spitzer have revealed populations of disk-bearing young stellar objects. These have provided crucial constraints, such as the timescale of dispersal of protoplanetary disks, obtained by carefully combining infrared data with spectroscopic or X-ray data. While observations in various regions agree with the general trend of decreasing disk fraction with age, the Lupus V and VI regions appeared to have been at odds, having an extremely low disk fraction. Here we show, using the recent Gaia data release 2 (DR2), that these extremely low disk fractions are actually due to a very high contamination by background giants. Out of the 83 candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in these clouds observed by Gaia, only five have distances of 150 pc, similar to YSOs in the other Lupus clouds, and have similar proper motions to other members in this star-forming complex. Of these five targets, four have optically thick (Class II) disks. On the one hand, this result resolves the conundrum of the puzzling low disk fraction in these clouds, while, on the other hand, it further clarifies the need to confirm the Spitzer selected diskless population with other tracers, especially in regions at low galactic latitude like Lupus V and VI. MWC758 is a young star surrounded by a transitional disk. Recently, a protoplanet candidate has been detected around MWC758 through high-resolution $L'$-band observations. The candidate is located inside the disk cavity at a separation of $\sim$111 mas from the central star, and at an average position angle of $\sim$165.5 degrees. We have performed simultaneous adaptive optics observations of MWC758 in the H$_{\alpha}$ line and the adjacent continuum using SPHERE/ZIMPOL at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We aim at detecting accreting protoplanet candidates through spectral angular differential imaging observations. The data analysis does not reveal any H$_{\alpha}$ signal around the target. The derived contrast curve in the B_Ha filter allows us to derive a 5$\sigma$ upper limit of $\sim$7.6 mag at 111 mas, the separation of the previously detected planet candidate. This contrast translates into a H$_{\alpha}$ line luminosity of $L_{\rm H_{\alpha}}\lesssim$ 5$\times$10$^{-5}$ $L_{\odot}$ at 111 mas, and an accretion luminosity of $L_{acc} <$3.7$\times$10$^{-4}\,L_{\odot}$. For the predicted mass range of MWC758b, 0.5-5 $M_{\rm Jup}$, this implies accretion rates of $\dot M \lesssim$ 3.4$\times$(10$^{-8}$-10$^{-9})\,M_{\odot}/yr$, for an average planet radius of 1.1 $R_{\rm Jup}$. Therefore, our estimates are consistent with the predictions of accreting circumplanetary accretion models for $R_{\rm in} = 1 R_{\rm Jup}$. In any case, the non-detection of any H$_{\alpha}$ emitting source in the ZIMPOL images does not allow us to unveil the true nature of the $L'$ detected source., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in A&A letters

We present a study of molecular gas in the inner disk $\left(r < 20 \, \text{AU} \right)$ around RY Lupi, with spectra from HST-COS, HST-STIS, and VLT-CRIRES. We model the radial distribution of flux from hot gas in a surface layer between $r = 0.1-10$ AU, as traced by Ly$\alpha$-pumped H$_2$. The result shows H$_2$ emission originating in a ring centered at $\sim$3 AU that declines within $r < 0.1$ AU, which is consistent with the behavior of disks with dust cavities. An analysis of the H$_2$ line shapes shows that a two-component Gaussian profile $\left(\text{FWHM}_{broad, H_2} = 105 \pm 15 \, \text{km s}^{-1}; \, \text{FWHM}_{narrow, H_2} = 43 \pm 13 \, \text{km s}^{-1} \right)$ is statistically preferred to a single-component Gaussian. We interpret this as tentative evidence for gas emitting from radially separated disk regions $\left( \left \langle r_{broad, H_2} \right \rangle \sim 0.4 \pm 0.1 \, \text{AU}; \, \left \langle r_{narrow, H_2} \right \rangle \sim 3 \pm 2 \, \text{AU} \right)$. The 4.7 $\mu$m $^{12}$CO emission lines are also well fit by two-component profiles $\left( \left \langle r_{broad, CO} \right \rangle = 0.4 \pm 0.1 \, \text{AU}; \, \left \langle r_{narrow, CO} \right \rangle = 15 \pm 2 \, \text{AU} \right)$. We combine these results with 10 $\mu$m observations to form a picture of gapped structure within the mm-imaged dust cavity, providing the first such overview of the inner regions of a young disk. We have analysed the [OI]6300 A line in a sample of 131 young stars with discs in the Lupus, Chamaeleon and signa Orionis star forming regions, observed with the X-shooter spectrograph at VLT. The stars have mass accretion rates spanning from 10^{-12} to 10^{-7} Mo/yr. The line profile was deconvolved into a low velocity component (LVC, < 40 km/s) and a high velocity component (HVC, > 40 km/s ), originating from slow winds and high velocity jets, respectively. The LVC is by far the most frequent component, with a detection rate of 77%, while only 30% of sources have a HVC. The [OI]6300 luminosity of both the LVC and HVC, when detected, correlates with stellar and accretion parameters of the central sources (i.e. Lstar , Mstar , Lacc , Macc), with similar slopes for the two components. The line luminosity correlates better with the accretion luminosity than with the stellar luminosity or stellar mass. We suggest that accretion is the main drivers for the line excitation and that MHD disc-winds are at the origin of both components. In the sub-sample of Lupus sources observed with ALMA a relationship is found between the HVC peak velocity and the outer disc inclination angle, as expected if the HVC traces jets ejected perpendicularly to the disc plane. Mass loss rates measured from the HVC span from ~ 10^{-13} to ~10^{-7} Mo/yr. The corresponding Mloss/Macc ratio ranges from ~0.01 to ~0.5, with an average value of 0.07. However, considering the upper limits on the HVC, we infer a ratio < 0.03 in more than 40% of sources. We argue that most of these sources might lack the physical conditions needed for an efficient magneto-centrifugal acceleration in the star-disc interaction region. With the purpose of performing a homogeneous determination of elemental abundances for members of the Lupus T association, we analyzed three chemical elements: lithium, iron, and barium. The aims were: to derive the Li abundance for ~90% of known class II stars in the Lupus I, II, III, IV clouds; to perform chemical tagging of a region where few Fe abundance measurements have been obtained in the past, and no determination of the Ba content has been done up to now. We also investigated possible Ba enhancement, as this element has become increasingly interesting in the last years following the evidence of Ba over-abundance in young clusters, the origin of which is still unknown. Using X-shooter@VLT, we analyzed the spectra of 89 cluster members, both class II and III stars. We measured the strength of the Li line and derived the abundance of this element through equivalent width measurements and curves of growth. For six class II stars we also measured the Fe and Ba abundances using the spectral synthesis and the code MOOG. The veiling contribution was taken into account for all three elements. We find a dispersion in the strength of the Li line at low Teff and identify three targets with severe Li depletion. The nuclear age inferred for these highly Li-depleted stars is around 15 Myr, which exceeds the isochronal one. As in other star-forming regions, no metal-rich members are found in Lupus, giving support to a recent hypothesis that the Fe abundance distribution of most of the nearby young regions could be the result of a common and widespread star formation episode involving the Galactic thin disk. We find that Ba is over-abundant by ~0.7 dex with respect to the Sun. Studies of the formation and evolution of young stars and their disks rely on the knowledge of the stellar parameters of the young stars. The derivation of these parameters is commonly based on comparison with photospheric template spectra. Furthermore, chromospheric emission in young active stars impacts the measurement of mass accretion rates, a key quantity to study disk evolution. Here we derive stellar properties of low-mass pre-main sequence stars without disks, which represent ideal photospheric templates for studies of young stars. We also use these spectra to constrain the impact of chromospheric emission on the measurements of mass accretion rates. The spectra in reduced, flux-calibrated, and corrected for telluric absorption form are made available to the community. We derive the spectral type for our targets by analyzing the photospheric molecular features present in their VLT/X-Shooter spectra by means of spectral indices and comparison of the relative strength of photospheric absorption features. We also measure effective temperature, gravity, projected rotational velocity, and radial velocity from our spectra by fitting them with synthetic spectra with the ROTFIT tool. The targets have negligible extinction and spectral type from G5 to M8. We perform synthetic photometry on the spectra to derive the typical colors of young stars in different filters. We measure the luminosity of the emission lines present in the spectra and estimate the noise due to chromospheric emission in the measurements of accretion luminosity in accreting stars. We provide a calibration of the photospheric colors of young PMS stars as a function of their spectral type in a set of standard broad-band optical and near-infrared filters. For stars with masses of ~ 1.5Msun and ages of ~1-5 Myr, the chromospheric noise converts to a limit of measurable mass accretion rates of ~ 3x10^-10 Msun/yr., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics. The dependence of the mass accretion rate on the stellar properties is a key constraint for star formation and disk evolution studies. Here we present a study of a sample of stars in the Chamaeleon I star forming region carried out using the VLT/X-Shooter spectrograph. The sample is nearly complete down to M~0.1Msun for the young stars still harboring a disk in this region. We derive the stellar and accretion parameters using a self-consistent method to fit the broad-band flux-calibrated medium resolution spectrum. The correlation between the accretion luminosity to the stellar luminosity, and of the mass accretion rate to the stellar mass in the logarithmic plane yields slopes of 1.9 and 2.3, respectively. These slopes and the accretion rates are consistent with previous results in various star forming regions and with different theoretical frameworks. However, we find that a broken power-law fit, with a steeper slope for stellar luminosity smaller than ~0.45 Lsun and for stellar masses smaller than ~ 0.3 Msun, is slightly preferred according to different statistical tests, but the single power-law model is not excluded. The steeper relation for lower mass stars can be interpreted as a faster evolution in the past for accretion in disks around these objects, or as different accretion regimes in different stellar mass ranges. Finally, we find two regions on the mass accretion versus stellar mass plane empty of objects. One at high mass accretion rates and low stellar masses, which is related to the steeper dependence of the two parameters we derived. The second one is just above the observational limits imposed by chromospheric emission. This empty region is located at M~0.3-0.4Msun, typical masses where photoevaporation is known to be effective, and at mass accretion rates ~10^-10 Msun/yr, a value compatible with the one expected for photoevaporation to rapidly dissipate the inner disk., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics. A homogeneous determination of basic stellar parameters of young stellar object (YSO) candidates is needed to confirm their evolutionary stage, membership to star forming regions (SFRs), and to get reliable values of the quantities related to chromospheric activity and accretion. We used the code ROTFIT and synthetic BT-Settl spectra for the determination of the atmospheric parameters (Teff and logg), the veiling, the radial (RV) and projected rotational velocity (vsini), from X-Shooter spectra of 102 YSO candidates in the Lupus SFR. We have shown that 13 candidates can be rejected as Lupus members based on their discrepant RV with respect to Lupus and/or the very low logg values. At least 11 of them are background giants. The spectral subtraction of inactive templates enabled us to measure the line fluxes for several diagnostics of both chromospheric activity and accretion. We found that all Class-III sources have H$\alpha$ fluxes compatible with a pure chromospheric activity, while objects with disks lie mostly above the boundary between chromospheres and accretion. YSOs with transitional disks displays both high and low H$\alpha$ fluxes. We found that the line fluxes per unit surface are tightly correlated with the accretion luminosity ($L_{\rm acc}$) derived from the Balmer continuum excess. This rules out that the relationships between $L_{\rm acc}$ and line luminosities found in previous works are simply due to calibration effects. We also found that the CaII-IRT flux ratio, $F_{8542}/F_{8498}$, is always small, indicating an optically thick emission source. The latter can be identified with the accretion shock near the stellar photosphere. The Balmer decrement reaches instead, for several accretors, high values typical of optically thin emission, suggesting that the Balmer emission originates in different parts of the accretion funnels with a smaller optical depth., Comment: 28 pages, 26 figures, accepted by A&A

We present the results of a study of the stellar and accretion properties of the (almost) complete sample of class II and transitional YSOs in the Lupus I, II, III and IV clouds, based on spectroscopic data acquired with the VLT/X-Shooter spectrograph. Our study combines the dataset from our previous work with new observations of 55 additional objects. We have investigated 92 YSO candidates in total, 11 of which have been definitely identified with giant stars unrelated to Lupus. The stellar and accretion properties of the 81 bona fide YSOs, which represent more than 90% of the whole class~II and transition disc YSO population in the aforementioned Lupus clouds, have been homogeneously and self-consistently derived, allowing for an unbiased study of accretion and its relationship with stellar parameters. The accretion luminosity, Lacc, increases with the stellar luminosity, Lstar, with an overall slope of ~1.6, similar but with a smaller scatter than in previous studies. There is a significant lack of strong accretors below Lstar~0.1Lsun, where Lacc is always lower than 0.01Lstar. We argue that the Lacc-Lstar slope is not due to observational biases, but is a true property of the Lupus YSOs. The logMacc-logMstar correlation shows a statistically significant evidence of a break, with a steeper relation for Mstar<0.2Msun and a flatter slope for higher masses. The bimodality of the Macc-Mstar relation is confirmed with four different evolutionary models used to derive the stellar mass. The bimodal behaviour of the observed relationship supports the importance of modelling self-gravity in the early evolution of the more massive discs, but other processes, such as photo evaporation and planet formation during the YSO's lifetime, may also lead to disc dispersal on different timescales depending on the stellar mass.
