Purpose The robotic system CoFlex for kidney stone removal via flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) by a single surgeon (solo surgery, abbreviated SSU) is introduced. It combines a versatile robotic arm and a commercially available ureteroscope to enable gravity compensation and safety functions like virtual walls. The haptic feedback from the operation site is comparable to manual fURS, as the surgeon actuates all ureteroscope DoF manually. Methods The system hardware and software as well as the design of an exploratory user study on the simulator model with non-medical participants and urology surgeons are described. For each user study task both objective measurements (e.g., completion time) and subjective user ratings of workload (using the NASA-TLX) and usability (using the System Usability Scale SUS) were obtained. Results CoFlex enabled SSU in fURS. The implemented setup procedure resulted in an average added setup time of 341.7 ± 71.6 s, a NASA-TLX value of 25.2 ± 13.3 and a SUS value of 82.9 ± 14.4. The ratio of inspected kidney calyces remained similar for robotic (93.68 %) and manual endoscope guidance (94.74 %), but the NASA-TLX values were higher (58.1 ± 16.0 vs. 48.9 ± 20.1) and the SUS values lower (51.5 ± 19.9 vs. 63.6 ± 15.3) in the robotic scenario. SSU in the fURS procedure increased the overall operation time from 1173.5 ± 355.7 s to 2131.0 ± 338.0 s, but reduced the number of required surgeons from two to one. Conclusions The evaluation of CoFlex in a user study covering a complete fURS intervention confirmed the technical feasibility of the concept and its potential to reduce surgeon working time. Future development steps will enhance the system ergonomics, minimize the users’ physical load while interacting with the robot and exploit the logged data from the user study to optimize the current fURS workflow.

Implementing dynamic legged locomotion entails stabilizing oscillatory behaviors in complex mechanical systems. Whenever possible, locomotion algorithms should also exploit the improved capabilities of elastic elements added to the structure to improve efficiency and robustness. This work aims to shed some light on implementing generic dynamic locomotion by stabilizing nonlinear modes. The nonlinear modal analysis extends the linear modal theory to nonlinear systems and thus characterizes the oscillations that a robot can execute as autonomous evolutions. We execute forward hopping motions with a single segmented elastic leg as the first step towards generic modal locomotion. We propose a locomotion algorithm that exploits the modes of an extension of the SLIP model. We develop this strategy to generalize to other robotic systems, and we extensively validate it with experiments on an elastically actuated segmented leg.

Robotic legs often lag behind the performance of their biological counterparts. The inherent passive dynamics of natural legs largely influences the locomotion and can be abstracted through the spring-loaded inverted pendulum (SLIP) model. This model is often approximated in physical robotic legs using a leg with minimal mass. Our work aims to embed the SLIP dynamics by using a nonlinear strict oscillatory mode into a segmented robotic leg with significant mass, to minimize the control required for achieving periodic motions. For the first time, we provide a realization of a nonlinear oscillatory mode in a robotic leg prototype. This is achieved by decoupling the polar task dynamics and fulfilling the resulting conditions with the physical leg design. Extensive experiments validate that the robotic leg effectively embodies the strict mode. The decoupled leg-length dynamic is exhibited in leg configurations corresponding to the stance and flight phases of the locomotion task, both for the passive system and when actuating the motors. We additionally show that the leg retains this behavior while performing jumping in place experiments.

We propose a novel, highly efficient sparse approach to region-based 6DoF object tracking that requires only a monocular RGB camera and the 3D object model. The key contribution of our work is a probabilistic model that considers image information sparsely along correspondence lines. For the implementation, we provide a highly efficient discrete scale-space formulation. In addition, we derive a novel mathematical proof that shows that our proposed likelihood function follows a Gaussian distribution. Based on this information, we develop robust approximations for the derivatives of the log-likelihood that are used in a regularized Newton optimization. In multiple experiments, we show that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art region-based methods in terms of tracking success while being about one order of magnitude faster. This paper discusses the theory of oscillatory normal modes, and its extension to general multi-body mechanical systems. We first review the efforts to generalize modal analysis to the non-linear case. This body of knowledge is vast and spread across several subfields of mathematics, physics, and engineering. We concisely summarize these results, and connect them together using a language familiar to the control theorist. We then propose a direct way of extending nonlinear modes to mechanical systems with a non Euclidean metrics (e.g. robots).

Certain telerobotic applications, including telerobotics in space, pose particularly demanding challenges to both technology and humans. Traditional bilateral telemanipulation approaches often cannot be used in such applications due to technical and physical limitations such as long and varying delays, packet loss, and limited bandwidth, as well as high reliability, precision, and task duration requirements. In order to close this gap, we research model-augmented haptic telemanipulation (MATM) that uses two kinds of models: a remote model that enables shared autonomous functionality of the teleoperated robot, and a local model that aims to generate assistive augmented haptic feedback for the human operator. Several technological methods that form the backbone of the MATM approach have already been successfully demonstrated in accomplished telerobotic space missions. On this basis, we have applied our approach in more recent research to applications in the fields of orbital robotics, telesurgery, caregiving, and telenavigation. In the course of this work, we have advanced specific aspects of the approach that were of particular importance for each respective application, especially shared autonomy, and haptic augmentation. This overview paper discusses the MATM approach in detail, presents the latest research results of the various technologies encompassed within this approach, provides a retrospective of DLR's telerobotic space missions, demonstrates the broad application potential of MATM based on the aforementioned use cases, and outlines lessons learned and open challenges.

This paper presents the development and qualification process of DLR's permanent magnet synchronous motor/gear DriveTrain unit (DT38). Based on a plurality of laboratory tests and experiences in space missions like ROKVISS or MASCOT, the unit was further developed and tested for upcoming space missions. The focus of this paper lies in the development of a robust and reliable DT38 unit for space rover, which has to cope with extreme environmental conditions like dusty, sandy terrain, large temperature fluctuations and radiation. Therefore different kind of sealing concepts has been tested. A detailed investigation on space lubrication and optional a special coating on the HD-gear for cold welding prevention shows the potential and the application spectrum of the DT38 units. For the shaker test, a vibration spectrum of a Japanese H3 launcher was selected since this rocket holds one of the highest vibration levels. Due to the fact that the qualification of the DT38 unit is performed on component level, the unit was hard mounted to the shaker. In the field of exploration on other planets, moons or asteroids with space rovers, the information about the surface and there structure is often limited. Therefore the unit went through a tough load- and duration test, to ensure its functionality on uneven surfaces and throughout the entire mission. A vacuum and radiation analysis completes the test series. The paper gives an overview on the results.

Mobile robotics will play a key role in future space, ocean and deep sea exploration activities. Besides the actual development of the robotic systems, the different ways of commanding those systems, using technologies varying from teleoperation with the human in the loop, through shared autonomy towards highly autonomous systems, will be the main challenges of these missions. This paper describes the robotic activities of the DLR institutions within the Helmholtz projects ROBEX and ARCHES, dealing with robots for autonomous space and ocean exploration applications. Furthermore, it describes the challenges, the overlap and the synergies of those domains, the different approaches of operating robots from far distances in extreme environments and gives an outlook on future mission possibilities.
