14. The identification of typical and atypical phonological acquisition in Turkish-German bilingual children

Abstract

Bilingual phonological acquisition is special as it encompasses the parallel processing of more than one phonological system and exhibits an interaction between the involved languages. Its assessment is mainly impeded by the heterogeneity of the bilingual population and the unavailability of suitable assessments; hence knowledge of what constitutes a typical bilingual phonological acquisition is generally limited for most language combinations. This knowledge, however, would enhance the understanding of phonological development in general and form the basis for the identification of atypical development. Since no study has yet comprehensively investigated the typical phonological acquisition in Turkish-German bilingual children and differentiated it from atypical acquisition, the present thesis aimed to explore these aspects by assessing the phonological skills of 84 Turkish-German bilingual children aged 3;0 - 5;5 years in both languages (t1) and following up 43 of these participants 12 - 15 months after the initial assessment (t2). Additionally, performances on 'quasi-language-independent' psycholinguistic tasks were assessed at t2 and evaluated regarding their significance for differentiating typical from atypical development. Analyses revealed that the typical phonological acquisition in Turkish-German bilinguals included an overall slower rate and qualitative differences compared to that in monolingual children, dissimilar phonological skills in German and Turkish (also over time), an interaction between the two languages, an influence by child-internal and environmental factors as well as a general improvement over time. Regarding the identification of potential quantitative and qualitative markers for the differentiation of typical from atypical development, three factors could be determined: the nature of children's phonological patterns, their number of infrequent variants as well as their performances on psycholinguistic tasks. Further evaluations showed, however, that only the combination of these markers as well as a longitudinal monitoring of children's performances allowed for a reliable differentiation within the present cohort. Theoretical and clinical implications of these outcomes are discussed.

Abstract

We analyze the nonequilibrium dynamics and steady-state behavior of the two-terminal Anderson-Holstein model with a superconducting and a normal conducting lead. In the deep Kondo limit we develop an analytical description if no phonons are included and a rate equation approach when phonons are present. Both cases are compared with the numerically exact diagrammatic Monte Carlo method obtaining a good agreement. Abstract

Data from bycaught, but otherwise presumed healthy individuals can contribute important biological data on species of cetaceans that are otherwise lacking. This study utilises data collected from systematic necropsies performed between October 1970 and May 2010 on 142 Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis), 607 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), and 640 long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis) incidentally caught and drowned in the shark nets off KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The aim of this analysis was to: (1) determine average absolute and relative organ weights for the three taxa as baseline values for later pathological examinations; and (2) examine potential correlations with the physiology and ecology in the three genera. Body length-weight relationships were described for the three species, indicating that S. chinensis is more robust than T. aduncus, with D. capensis being the smallest species out of the three taxa. Organ weights, as a percentage of total body weight were examined for the three delphinids. Organs examined included heart, lungs and trachea, liver, kidneys, spleen, and testes. Relative heart, liver and kidney weights were significantly larger in the small-bodied, fast-swimming D. capensis, than in the slower, more coastal S. chinensis and T. aduncus, possibly reflecting differences in activity patterns between the three species. Relative lung and trachea weights were not significantly different in the three species. Combined testes weight, as a percentage of total body weight, in combination with information on group size and sexual dimorphism suggested a monogamous or extreme polygynous (harem) mating system in S. chinensis, frequent copulations in T. aduncus, and sperm competition in D. capensis. The results of the present study suggest that the relative sizes of the major organs in the three genera are a reflection of the differing life histories and ecologies of the species examined.

38. Influence of specific characteristics of subjects and environmental conditions on comfort level during showering

Abstract

In systems that do not store domestic hot water (DHW), temperature fluctuations occur in the hot water temperature at the outlet when the DHW load changes. If these temperature fluctuations arrive at the tapping point, they influence the users' perception of comfort. Especially in the shower these temperature fluctuations can lead to a loss of comfort. Unlike in the field of air conditioning, there have been relatively few studies on the perception of comfort in the shower, and these used only males as test subjects. Therefore, we started a study with 120 persons with the aim to involve a representative variety of test subjects. In our test facility a temperature profile with varying rates of change was imprinted and the test subjects provided feedback on whether they noticed temperature changes or found them uncomfortable. In this study, results on the comfort perception of the participants in the shower are examined in relation to individual factors such as gender, age or Body-Mass-Index (BMI), and the outside temperature. We cannot determine a specific impact of these factors on the comfort perception of a group of test subjects. Neither was an influence on the desired temperatures, which ranged between 33 °C and 45 °C, detected.
