Abstract

A three-month smoking cessation program on 20 nonexercising female smokers reveals that enhanced physical exertion is beneficial in temporary abstinence from smoking and can serve as a strategy for permanent abstinence. The program includes exercise treatment and contact control in the form of three specialized exercise sessions and three lectures on women's health and fitness per week.

Abstract

Smoking is a known risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, yet it is often difficult for smokers, especially women, to successfully quit smoking. It is possible that use of physical exercise may enhance the success of smoking cessation, as it helps to regulate body weight, can moderate mood changes, and can improve responses to stress. To determine if an exercise program could help women trying to stop smoking, 20 healthy female smokers who previously exercised infrequently were studied. All subjects underwent a smoking cessation program which used current behavior modification techniques and stress management lessons. Ten subjects also underwent supervised exercise sessions three times a week for 15 weeks, starting three weeks before the smoking cessation treatment. Smoking abstinence was verified by tests of saliva and breath levels of carbon monoxide. Seven subjects completed the exercise program, and their exercise tolerance improved significantly. Eighty percent of subjects given only the smoking cessation program were able to quit for 24 hours, while 70 percent of those in the exercise program did so, but only exercisers could maintain abstinence. Five exercisers were abstinent at the end of seven days, while none of the nonexercisers were, and abstinence was maintained by two exercisers after 12 months.
