Abstract

Horses revolutionized human history with fast mobility1. However, the timeline between their domestication and their widespread integration as a means of transport remains contentious2-4. Here we assemble a collection of 475 ancient horse genomes to assess the period when these animals were first reshaped by human agency in Eurasia. We find that reproductive control of the modern domestic lineage emerged around 2200 BCE, through close-kin mating and shortened generation times. Reproductive control emerged following a severe domestication bottleneck starting no earlier than approximately 2700 BCE, and coincided with a sudden expansion across Eurasia that ultimately resulted in the replacement of nearly every local horse lineage. This expansion marked the rise of widespread horse-based mobility in human history, which refutes the commonly held narrative of large horse herds accompanying the massive migration of steppe peoples across Europe around 3000 BCE and earlier3,5. Finally, we detect significantly shortened generation times at Botai around 3500 BCE, a settlement from central Asia associated with corrals and a subsistence economy centred on horses6,7. This supports local horse husbandry before the rise of modern domestic bloodlines.

Abstract

La excepcional recuperación de tres restos de oso pardo en tres estructuras de la primera Edad del Hierro del yacimiento de Can Roqueta, Sector Can Revella, nos llevó a realizar este trabajo de documentación sobre la evidencia de la captura y aprovechamiento del gran carnívoro en un yacimiento del Holoceno catalán. Los restos aparecieron mezclados con desechos de alimentación en el interior de estructuras que han aportado gran cantidad de huesos, y que a priori fueron utilizadas como silos. Una vez inutilizados como contenedores de grano fueron reutilizados como basureros acumulando detritus domésticos entre los que destacan los provocados por la limpieza de hogares (carbones, huesos quemados, piedras, etc...).

Abstract

Equids played an important role in the development of communication in past societies, and were part of the exchanges between populations. The multi-isotopic study (strontium, carbon and oxygen isotopes) conducted on equid teeth from Bronze and Early Iron Age Can Roqueta suggests that animals originate from diverse locations and their diet was carefully managed. The enriched oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios in equid teeth compared with other taxa from the same site suggest that equids may have drunk from water troughs, thus creating a C and O isotopic enrichment and partial covariance, similar to a “lake” effect. This is the most comprehensive study on equid mobility in Iberia so far.

Abstract

Zooarchaeological analyses of the skeletal remains of 52 animals unearthed in the courtyard of an Iron Age Tartessian building known as Casas del Turuñuelo (Badajoz, Spain) shed light on a massive sacrifice forming part of a series of rituals linked to the site’s last period of activity and final abandonment. The rites took place towards the end of the 5th century BCE when both the building (intentionally destroyed) and the sacrificed animals were intentionally buried under a tumulus 90 m in diameter and 6 m high. The main objective of the zooarchaeological and microstratigraphic analyses was to determine the phasing of the sacrificial depositions. Evidence gathered from taphonomic assessments and a series of radiocarbon datings indicate that the sacrifices fall into three consecutive phases spanning several years. The findings of the zooarchaeological analyses clearly point to a selection of equid and cattle males. Adult equids predominate (MNI = 41) followed by adult and sub-adult cattle (MNI = 6). Pigs, in turn, are only represented by a few adults and sub-adult females (MNI = 4). Among the animals is a single dog of undetermined sex between 3 and 4 years of age. The fact that the animals are mostly adults discards the likelihood that they died from natural causes or an epidemic. In addition, the scenographic deposition of certain equids in pairs, as well as evidence of the burning of plant offerings, suggest an intentional ritualistic sacrifice. Nine of the initial depositions of Phase 1 in the SE quadrant were scattered and certain of their bones bear marks characteristic of both prolonged open air exposure and scavengers. Another 31 animals from Phases 1 and 2 are represented by almost complete, articulated skeletons, indicating they were promptly covered. 15. Perros enanos en el noreste de la península Ibérica: nuevos datos para su estudio en época romana

Abstract

[EN] We present the morphometric and osteopathological analysis of three small-sized (32-38 cm) robust dogs with deformations in the diaphyses and epiphyses (chondrodystrophy) and in the foramen magnum. They come from different sites in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. The oldest was found in a silo at the Ibero-Roman site, Serrat dels Espinyers (Isona, Lleida), dated to the end of the 3rd century and the first half of the 2nd century BC. Two more modern ones were documented at Roman sites: one at the CR Empúries necropolis (L’Escala, Girona), dated to the second half of the 2nd century AD and another at the Can Verboom site (Premià de Dalt, Barcelona), dated to the end of the 4th century AD. These cases significantly increase the number of individuals diagnosed so far for this period in this geographical area. Their morphological characteristics allow us to classify them among the most robust and heavy dwarf dogs documented in European canine variability from the Roman colonization onwards. Their exceptional nature is due to the scarce current information on this type of dog in the peninsular territory. At the same time, this work evaluates their possible uses, as well as making some preliminary approaches to their genetic characterization. The possible inbreeding of these populations may explain the permanence of a genetic pathology linked to dwarfism: chondrodysplasia., [ES] Presentamos el análisis morfométrico y osteopatológico de tres perros de talla pequeña (32-38 cm) y robustos, con deformaciones en las diáfisis y epífisis (condrodistrofia) y en el foramen magnum. Provienen de diferentes yacimientos del noreste peninsular. El más antiguo se localizó en un silo del yacimiento ibero-romano, Serrat dels Espinyers (Isona, Lleida), datado a finales del s. III y la primera mitad del s. II a.C. Dos más modernos se documentaron en yacimientos romanos: uno en la necrópolis CR Empúries (L’Escala, Girona), fechada en la segunda mitad del s. II d.C. y otro en el yacimiento de Can Verboom (Premià de Dalt, Barcelona), datado a finales del s. IV d.C. Estos casos incrementan de forma importante los individuos diagnosticados hasta ahora para este período en esta área geográfica. Sus características morfológicas permiten clasificarlos entre los perros enanos más robustos y pesados que se documentan dentro de la variabilidad canina europea a partir de la colonización romana. Su excepcionalidad se debe a la escasa información actual sobre este tipo de perro en el territorio peninsular. A su vez, este trabajo evalúa sus posibles usos, y se presentan unas aproximaciones preliminares a su caracterización genética. La posible consanguinidad de estas poblaciones puede explicar la permanencia de alguna patología genética vinculada al enanismo: la condrodisplasia.

20. Bovinos en estructuras funerarias del Neolítico Medio del noreste de la Península Ibérica. La necrópolis de la Bòbila Madurell como caso de estudio sobre la gestión del vacuno

Abstract

[EN] Cattle was one of the main species raised by the first Neolithic farmers in the Iberian Peninsula. In most of the sites, domestic Caprines were the basis of the economy, with cattle being a complement. However, there were some exceptions, especially in open-air settlements, where bovines were the main species bred. This is the case of the necropolis of Bòbila Madurell (4210-3670 cal BC), the most extensive of the Iberian Middle Neolithic in surface and number of tombs. The importance of the cattle in the ritual of this site has been related to its economic importance for these groups of the Middle Neolithic. This work focuses on the zooarcheological study of cattle remains recovered in the two main sectors of this necropolis, “Madurell Sud” and “Madurell Ferrocarrils”. The aim is to analyse the management of cattle herds during the Middle Neolithic. The osteometric analyses and the determination of the age-at-death and obtaining mortality profiles have been the basis of this study. Osteometric analysis has made it possible to differentiate between the remains of cattle and their agriotype, the aurochs. Mortality profiles provide information on the economic use of these animals. 37 individuals were identified from 20 structures. Based on the osteometric analysis, we have characterized the whole and ruled out the presence of wild specimens or aurochs (Bos primigenius). Mortality profiles indicate that the herd was exploited basically for meat, once its optimum weight was obtained, and secondarily for milk, [ES] En la ganadería neolítica de la Península Ibérica el bovino doméstico (Bos taurus) fue el segundo taxón en importancia, después de los ovicaprinos. Algunos yacimientos constituyen una excepción y presentan una mayor abundancia de bovino. Éste es el caso de la necrópolis de la Bòbila Madurell (4210-3670 cal BC), la más extensa del Neolítico Medio peninsular en superficie y en número de tumbas. El objetivo de este trabajo es estudiar la configuración de la cabaña bovina a partir de los conjuntos faunísticos registrados en los principales sectores de la necrópolis. Un volumen de restos importante ha permitido diferenciar 37 animales en 20 estructuras. Basándonos en el análisis osteométrico se caracteriza el conjunto y se descarta la presencia de ejemplares salvajes o uros (Bos primigenius). Los resultados indican que el rebaño fue explotado básicamente para la obtención de carne una vez obtenido su peso óptimo y secundariamente para el aprovechamiento de la leche., [EU] Iberiar penintsulako abeltzaintza neolitikoan, eta ardiak ondoren, garrantziari dagokionez bigarren taxona etxeko behi-azienda (Bos taurus) izan zen. Lan honen helburua da nekropoliko sektore nagusietan erregistratutako multzo faunistikoetatik abiatuta behi-aziendaren konfigurazioa aztertzea. Aztarnen bolumena handia denez, 20 egituratan 37 animalia bereizi ditugu. Azterketa osteometrikoan oinarrituta, multzoa karakterizatu eta uroen (Bos primigenius) edo ale basatien presentzia baztertu dugu. Emaitzek agerian utzi dute azienda haragia lortzeko ustiatu zutela batez ere haien pisu egokia lortutakoan, eta bigarren mailan, aldiz, esnea aprobetxatzeko.

Abstract

Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare. However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 bc3. Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia and Anatolia, have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographic and temporal origins of modern domestic horses have remained unknown. Here we pinpoint the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region, as the homeland of modern domestic horses. Furthermore, we map the population changes accompanying domestication from 273 ancient horse genomes. This reveals that modern domestic horses ultimately replaced almost all other local populations as they expanded rapidly across Eurasia from about 2000 bc, synchronously with equestrian material culture, including Sintashta spoke-wheeled chariots. We find that equestrianism involved strong selection for critical locomotor and behavioural adaptations at the GSDMC and ZFPM1 genes. Our results reject the commonly held association between horseback riding and the massive expansion of Yamnaya steppe pastoralists into Europe around 3000 bc driving the spread of Indo-European languages. This contrasts with the scenario in Asia where Indo-Iranian languages, chariots and horses spread together, following the early second millennium bc Sintashta culture.

Abstract

Los primeros caballos domésticos aparecieron en las estepas euroasiáticas hace unos 5000 años. Desde entonces y a lo largo de la historia reciente de la humanidad, el caballo ha servido para multitud de tareas. Entender de qué manera las distintas sociedades sacaron provecho de este animal y de sus parientes más cercanos (asnos y sus híbridos, las mulas y burdéganos), permite conocer de manera directa el grado de complejidad tecnológica y social de esas sociedades concretas (Fages et al. 2019). La Edad del Hierro fue una etapa de especial importancia en la península ibérica, debido a que las poblaciones autóctonas recibieron influencias de otros pueblos procedentes de distintas zonas del Mediterráneo y de la fachada atlántica de Europa. Además, para estas sociedades peninsulares, el caballo fue un animal singular que fue utilizado para distintas finalidades: transporte, conflictos bélicos, como símbolo de poder y prestigio social y más esporádicamente, como fuente de alimento. De hecho, algunos autores han definido al caballo como el animal protagonista de la Edad del Hierro, debido a su presencia y sus implicaciones en la ritualidad de distintas zonas del Mediterráneo antiguo, incluida la península ibérica. La importancia de este animal fue tal, que se ha propuesto al caballo como el mejor indicador para conocer la evolución de los cambios socioeconómicos ocurridos desde la Edad del Bronce hasta la época romana. Durante los últimos años, nuestro conocimiento sobre la Primera Edad del Hierro del valle medio del río Guadiana se ha visto incrementado gracias al estudio de su poblamiento y al hallazgo del yacimiento tartésico de Casas del Turuñuelo (Guareña, Badajoz). El estado de conservación del edificio y los materiales que lo acompañan permiten considerarlo uno de los yacimientos arqueológicos más relevantes de la Protohistoria mediterránea. Las razones son numerosas, pero se pueden resumir en tres conceptos principales: 1) la documentación de unas estructuras arquitectónicas inéditas para la época, 2) la recuperación de ricos materiales arqueológicos procedentes de diversas partes del Mediterráneo y 3) la presencia de un sacrifico numeroso de animales o hecatombe, relacionado claramente con un acto de carácter ritual. Además, y para mayor espectacularidad de este hallazgo, la mayoría de estos animales son équidos. Este descubrimiento ha supuesto un catalizador para que alrededor del Turuñuelo y de sus équidos sacrificados, se haya formado un equipo multidisciplinar de arqueólogos, arqueozoólogos, veterinarios y biólogos especialistas en ADN antiguo, con unos objetivos concretos: reunir toda la información posible de estos équidos y con ella, conocer mejor a la sociedad tartésica que los sacrificó., Esta investigación se está desarrollando en el marco de los siguientes proyectos de la Comunidad Autónoma de Extremadura: 1. “Estudio de la hecatombe animal del yacimiento de Casas del Turuñuelo (Guareña, Badajoz). [ES]: El presente volumen recoge parte de las contribuciones presentadas durante el IX Congreso Internacional de Estudios Fenicios y Púnicos que tuvo lugar en Mérida entre los días 22 y 26 de octubre de 2018. Abstract

Can Roqueta has provided a large number of equid and dog assemblages from the Late Bronze Age to the Early Iron Age. An analysis of the stable isotopes δ13C and δ15N in 42 bone samples has made it possible to reconstruct the diet of domestic equids. The results and carpological remains show that the territory was managed for agricultural and pasture use. They indicate the cultivation of two types of highly nutritious and digestible millet, used in combination with other cereals to prepare fodder, as well as the use of natural pastures. Abstract

A partir de los resultados del análisis de los restos faunísticos recuperados en las estructuras con restos humanos de dos sectores de la Bòbila Madurell (Sant Quirze del Vallès) (“Madurell Sud” y “Madurell Ferrocarrils”), se intenta avanzar en el estudio sobre el papel de los animales dentro del mundo ritual y funerario del IV milenio cal BC, en el área prelitoral catalana. En este tipo de yacimientos, los restos de origen animal suelen aparecer transformados en forma de herramientas y/o de elementos de adorno. En las estructuras estudiadas, se han recuperado restos de fauna que, “a priori”, informan sobre otro tipo de uso de los animales en el ritual funerario: conexiones anatómicas completas y parciales, elementos aislados y/o fragmentos. Estos pueden aparecer asociados directamente a los restos humanos o bien, dispersos en el relleno de las estructuras. Se ha llevado a cabo el estudio zooarqueológico y tafonómico de los restos faunísticos: identificaciónanatómica y taxonómica y análisis de las alteraciones de origen antrópico. Los resultados obtenidos sehan relacionado con el tipo de estructura y el sexo y edad de los individuos inhumados. Los resultados evidencian que la importancia de las especies domésticas transciende también al mundo de lo simbólico y funerario. Parecen ser el centro de ofrendas y banquetes y evidencian la práctica dediferentes rituales en función de su asociación con los diferentes tipos de estructuras funerarias. Se confirma el alto grado de complejidad del ritual funerario del IV milenio cal. BC en Cataluña, ya observado a partir de otro tipo de ofrendas y materiales encontrados también en estas estructuras.

Abstract

BC) equid remains at the Can Roqueta site (Sabadell, Barcelona), together with the first strontium isotope results to determine their geographical origin. The zooarchaeological study reveals a remarkable number of equid remains at the site, the bone pathologies of which suggest their use for riding, drafting and load-carrying. The mortality and sex profiles point to the presence of adult animals, while the absence of neonatal and juvenile remains raises the question as to whether these individuals may have originated from other sites specialised in equid breeding. The strontium values obtained from six individuals suggest that some equids were reared in a geological area with a similar strontium signature to that of the Vallès area, where the site is located. However, three equids present a different strontium signature, pointing to a possibly different geographical origin.

Resumen del trabajo presentado a la Second Annual Equine History Conference, celebrada en la Universidad de California, Pomona (USA) del 13 al 15 de noviembre de 2019., Horses symbolise power in most cultures that count this animal among their domesticates. During the Iron Age, social stratification became more apparent across Western Europe, and horses played a significant role in this process. The Iberian Peninsula was no exception, and the site of 'Turuñuelo de Guareña' provides an exceptional example. Tartessos is described as a kingdom in the ancient Greek sources. The Tartessic culture originated from the interaction between indigenous communities living in the South-West of the Iberian Peninsula and the Phoenicians that established trading centres on the coast during the Iron Age. The excavation works at the site of 'Turuñuelo de Guareña' uncovered more than fifty horses – many in anatomical connection – sacrificed and disposed in pairs with bronze bites on them. The site was subsequently burnt and then covered with earth to seal it. This work presents the preliminary archaeological results and the multidisciplinary approach undertaken on this extraordinary assemblage, which constitutes a unicumacross the Mediterranean and a singular opportunity to characterise the equine population sacrificed at the site. In particular, strontium isotopes and ancient DNA analyses, together with accurate zooarchaeological studies will enable us to assess whether the animals originated from the local area or there were horses from different geographical origins and / or lineages.

ISBN: 978-80-907270-6-9 European Association of Archaeologists, 2019, Metal findings and iconographic evidences related to horses suggest that these animals had a strong symbolic value and became major prestige items in Bronze Age and Iron Age societies from the NE of the Iberian Peninsula. The research developed in the frame of the project ‘Mobility, contacts and exchanges during the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula: the Ripoll River (Barcelona) as a laboratory’ (PI: J. López Cachero) included a pilot study on six Iron Age horses from the site of Can Roqueta to explore their geographical origin by the means of strontium isotopes (87Sr/86Sr). The strontium isotopic study included the analysis of six archaeological horse enamel samples. In addition, the local strontium ratio was assessed by the means of three dentine samples from the archaeological site, and the bioavailable strontium around the site was evaluated on oak leaves from two different locations. In addition, other 10 present-day tree samples from different geological formations around the site were used as a comparison. The results obtained indicate that some of the strontium ratios from archaeological horse enamel are compatible with the local geology and neighbour formations. Nevertheless, a more distant origin cannot be excluded, as lead isotopic studies on bronze objects recovered at the site indicate that copper ores from the area of Les Cévennes (Southern France) were used to make a Mialhacian arrowhead and a double-spring fibula, which supports the existence of long distance trade at the site (Rovira et al., 2008).

Abstract

Horse domestication revolutionized warfare and accelerated travel, trade, and the geographic expansion of languages. Here, we present the largest DNA time series for a non-human organism to date, including genome-scale data from 149 ancient animals and 129 ancient genomes (≥1-fold coverage), 87 of which are new. This extensive dataset allows us to assess the modern legacy of past equestrian civilizations. We find that two extinct horse lineages existed during early domestication, one at the far western (Iberia) and the other at the far eastern range (Siberia) of Eurasia. None of these contributed significantly to modern diversity. We show that the influence of Persian-related horse lineages increased following the Islamic conquests in Europe and Asia. Multiple alleles associated with elite-racing, including at the MSTN “speed gene,” only rose in popularity within the last millennium. Finally, the development of modern breeding impacted genetic diversity more dramatically than the previous millennia of human management. Genome-wide data from 278 ancient equids provide insights into how ancient equestrian civilizations managed, exchanged, and bred horses and indicate vast loss of genetic diversity as well as the existence of two extinct lineages of horses that failed to contribute to modern domestic animals.

Abstract

This study focuses on the role of faunal remains in funerary rituals in the Middle Neolithic necropolis of Bòbila Madurell (Sant Quirze del Vallès, Barcelona) (“Madurell Sur” and “Madurell Ferrocarril” sectors). Faunal remains recovered in these burials a priori inform about the different uses of animals in funerary rituals. Complete and partial anatomical connections, isolated elements, and/or bone fragments were recovered. These may appear directly associated with human remains or scattered among the structures’ fill. Animal remains were analyzed using zooarchaeological and taphonomic methods: anatomical and taxonomical composition, age of death, and human modifications. The data obtained were linked to burial type and human remains’ sex and age. Results show that the economic importance of domestic animals for Middle Neolithic groups would also cover their symbolic and funerary world. In Bòbila Madurell, animals could be offerings and play a part in feasts. In addition, faunal data confirm the ritual diversity and the possible social differentiation of these groups previously proposed by other studies.

Abstract

[EN] Funerary structures recorded in Catalonia from the end of the 5th to the middle of the 4th millennia most often consist of inhumations of a single individual accompanied by various grave goods. Though animal remains and objects made from them are not especially abundant, the large number of excavated funerary structures has provided vertebrate faunal assemblages that enable us to make updated observations. In this paper, we present a compilation of these elements, employing data from the literature, as well as data obtained by our own studies. These animal materials consist of tools and ornamental objects. Complete animal burials and partial elements of these animals (especially from domestic species) were also recorded. [FR] Les structures funeraires documentees entre Ia fin du v• et le milieu du IV• millenaires cal BC en Catalogne sont caracterisees par le fait de contenir habituellement un individu accompagne de divers elements de mobilier. Les objets et restes d'origine animale ne sont pas specialement abondants, pourtant le nombre eleve de structures fouillees a fourni des ensembles faunistiques de vertebres qui permettent de proposer des donnees renouvelees sur les depots d'origine animale dans les espaces funeraires et plus particulierement dans ceux affilies a Ia culture des «Sepulcres de Fossa»., Ce travail a ete partiellement realise grace aux projets CGL2012-38434-C03-03, HAR2011-26193 et SGR2009-01145, 2014SGR-108.

Abstract

[EN] The authors of this paper has been investigating for years the Neolithic funerary contexts of the culture known as «Sepulcros de Fosa», in the northeast of the lberian Península. Here we present the results obtained from the study of the grave goods usually found in the burials of this cultural group. Ceramic vessels were gene rally placed in the graves a long with the deceased, as well as lithic and bon e tooIs, ornamental elements, and to a lesser extent, faunal remains. We d iscuss their morphological characteristics, the origin of the raw materials and the technical processes involved in their production. We also try to improve our knowledge of the function of sorne of these artefacts and their possible social or symbolic signification. This research fa lls within the l+D project started in 2011 and entit led "Aproximación a las primeras comunidades neolíticas del NE peninsular a través de sus prácticas funerarias" (HAR2011-23149). AII in all, each day we learn a litt le more about these communities., [FR] Le groupe de chercheurs qui signe ce travail étudie depuis des années les contextes funéraires néolithiques de la culture dite des «Sepulcros de Fosa», au nord-est de la péninsule lbérique. Nous présentons ici les résultats obtenus a partir de l'étude des éléments du mobilier funéraire habituellement documenté dans les sépultures de cette culture. En général, des récipients en céramique accompagnent les inhumés, ainsi que des instruments en pierre et en os, des éléments de parure, et, dans une moindre mesure, des restes faun iques. Nous aborderons leurs caractéristiques morphologiques, !'origine des matériaux utilisés, les procédés techniques impliqués dans leur élaboration. Nous essa ierons également de progresser dans la connaissance de la fonction de certains de ces objets et leur possible signification sociale et/ou symbolique. Le tout s'inscrit dans le cadre d'un projet l+D débuté en 2011 et intitulé: «Aproximación a las primeras comunidades neolíticas del NE peninsular a través de sus prácticas funerarias (HAR2011-23149)». En somme, nous en apprenons chaque jour un peu plus sur ces communautés., Une partie des analyses réalisées et présentées dans ce travail a été réalisée dans fe cadre du projet «Aproximación a las primeras comunidades neolíticas del NE peninsular a través de sus prácticas funerarias (HAR2011-23149) JJ» financé par le Ministere de f'Economie et de fa Compétitivité du Gouvernement d'Espagne. Abstract

[cat]El Serrat dels Espinyers constitueix, per si mateix, un punt important en el poc conegut poblament ibéric del Pallars. En el panorama arqueològic català esdevé un cas únic pel que fa a la utiliztzació dels animals en activitats rituals vinculades tant a espais funeraris com domèstics, en particular pel volum i la qualitat de les dades aportades. L'anàlisi de les restes òssies animals i d'altes materials associats han procurart un conjunt de dades que permeten establir hipòtesis sobre els comportaments rituals de la societat ibèrica que va ocupar el jaciment. D'altra banda, es posa en evidència la importància de dos tàxons: els èquids i els gossos, i la seva relació amb l'activitat econòmica que hi va poder tenir lloc. [eng]Serrat dels Espinyers is an important site within the little known Iberian culture settlement of the Pallars area in Catalonia. Regarding the use of animals in ritual activities related to both domestic and funerary spaces, the data provided by this site are unique within the Catalan archaeology. The results obtained in the analysis of animal bones and other associated materials have allowed us to establish new hypotheses about the ritual behavior in Iberian society. Moreover, the importance of two taxa: horses and dogs, has been highlighted, as well as their relationship with the economic activity that could have taken place on the site.

Abstract

La reconstrucció de les pautes de consum d"aliments durant el bronze final i la primera edat de ferro, tant si són de caire domèstic com si no, passa per un anàlisi exhaustiu de les diferents dades arqueològiques. En primer lloc, tenim els espais destinats al consum. Les circumstàncies pròpies del registre arqueològic a Catalunya durant aquests períodes fa que, depèn del territori, aquest nivell d"anàlisi sigui més o menys evident. Així, en territoris on existeix una tradició arquitectònica en pedra i, fins i tot, dissenys urbanístics ben definits (entorn del Segre i l"Ebre), aquest problema resulta relativament fàcil de tractar en funció de la conservació de la resta d"elements i la particularitat de les estructures analitzades. Això ha permès caracteritzar certes pràctiques.de consum diferenciades del que podria ser propi d"un àmbit domèstic en jaciments com Barranc de Gàfols (habitacions 1 y 2), la Moleta del Remei (habitació 7), Tossal Redó (habitació 1), San Cristóbal (habitació 2), Sant Jaume Mas d"en Serrà (habitacions 3 i 4), l"edifici de Turó del Calvari de Vilalba dels Arcs o Genó (habitació 2) (Lucas 1989; López Cachero 1998; Sanmartí et al. 2000; Fatás 2004-05; Garcia 2005; Sardà 2008). Aquesta situació contrasta amb el que passa a la resta del litoral català on les estructures negatives són pràcticament l"única evidència del poblament existent i on resulta molt complicat, fins i tot, la documentació de qualsevol espai habitacional que ens permeti avançar en aquesta direcció.

En relación a trabajos recientes sobre los patrones de poblamiento protohistórico en el curso bajo del Ebro y la causalidad económica (Asensio el alii, 1996/ Mascort el alii, 1991), decidimos plantear un estudio que nutriera dichas hipótesis mediante el análisis arqueozoológico de dos yacimientos culturalmente contemporáneos y de cronologías sucesivas, ubicados a orillas de este río.

Abstract

El jaciment de la Caserna de Sant Pau (Barcelona) presenta dos moments d'ocupació prehistorica. la primera correspon a les etapes inicials del neolític, la segona a l'Edat del Bronze. En aquest treball exposem l'estudi arqueozoologic de les restes recuperades. El conjunt es caracteritza pel domini de la fauna domestica. El grup més important és el format per ovelles i cabres, seguit pels porcs i els bovins. La conformació del tipus de ramat podria ser el resultat a una adaptació a un medi molt particular (asentament costaner)., Caserna de Sant Pau archaeological site (Barcelona) shows two moments of prehistoric settlement. The tirst belongs to the firsts steps of Neolilhic period, Ihe second one, to the Bronze Age. In Ihis work we present the archaeozoological study of Ihe remains. The material is characterised by the importance of domestic animals. The most important group is formed by sheep and domestic goats, and then by pigs and bovines. This structure of the group can be due by the results of an adaptation to a specially environment (coastal settlement).
