Abstract Background Albizia richardiana belongs Fabaceae family which different parts like fruits, flowers, barks, and roots are used medicinally. The study reports the in vitro anti-inflammatory, thrombolytic, cytotoxicity and antimicrobial activity of methanolic extract of A. richardiana stem and its different fractions. Method The methanolic extract of A. richardiana stem (MEAR) extracted with n-hexane (HXFAR), carbon tetrachloride (CTFAR), chloroform (CFAR), and aqueous (AQFAR) and subjected for DPPH scavenging activity and total phenol content (TPC). The cytotoxic activity evaluated by brine shrimp lethality bioassay, while the disk diffusion method used for the antimicrobial study. The anti-inflammatory and thrombolytic activities of the extracts evaluated by the hypotonic solution induced hemolysis, heat-induced hemolysis and human blood clot lysis, respectively. Results All the extracts exhibited excellent antioxidant activity in the DPPH scavenging assay and maximum total phenol content observed by HXFAR. Albizia richardiana, a fast-growing, large deciduous tree belonging to the Fabaceae family, grows well in hot and humid areas but mainly grows in the tropics of the Old World. The medicinal and other uses of Albizia richardiana are well documented, but the phytotoxic effects of this tree have not yet been investigated. We conducted this study to investigate the phytotoxic activity of Albizia richardiana leaves and to identify growth inhibitory substances for controlling weeds in a sustainable way. Aqueous methanol extracts of Albizia richardiana leaves greatly suppressed the growth of cress and barnyard grass seedlings in a concentration- and species-dependent manner. Two phytotoxic substances were separated using several purification steps and characterized through spectral analysis as dehydrovomifoliol and loliolide. Dehydrovomifoliol and loliolide significantly arrested the seedling growth of cress in the concentrations of 0.1 and 0.01 mM, respectively. The extract concentrations needed for 50% growth inhibition (I50 values) of cress seedlings were 3.16–3.01 mM for dehydrovomifoliol and 0.03–0.02 mM for loliolide. The global population is increasing day by day. To meet the food demand for such a huge number of people, crop production must increase without damaging the environment, and to prevent synthetic chemical herbicides from polluting the environment, controlling weeds using bioherbicides is essential. Accordingly, using phytotoxic substances obtained from plants for biological weed management has attracted attention. The plant Albizia richardiana possesses phytotoxic compounds that have been previously recorded. Hence, we have conducted this research to characterize more phytotoxic compounds in Albizia richardiana. Aqueous methanolic extracts of Albizia richardiana plant significantly restricted the growth of the examined plants lettuce and Italian ryegrass in a species- and concentration-dependent manner. Three active phytotoxic compounds were isolated through various chromatographic methods and identified as compound 1, 2, and 3. Compound 3 exhibited stronger phytotoxic potentials than the other two compounds and significantly suppressed the growth of Lepidium sativum (cress). The concentration of the compounds required for 50% growth reduction (I50 value) of the Lepidium sativum seedlings ranged between 0.0827 to 0.4133 mg/mL. The results suggest that these three phytotoxic compounds might contribute to the allelopathic potential of Albizia richardiana.

This paper presents the effects of particle size and mixing ratio on the properties including physical, mechanical, and decay resistance of wood plastic composites (WPCs). In addition, it also presents the effects of immersion temperatures on water absorption (WA) and thickness swelling (TS) of the WPCs. WPCs with a thickness of 6 mm were fabricated from Albizia richardiana King & Prain wood particles and recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) by the flat-press method. To prepare the WPCs, two different wood particle sizes (0.5-1.0 and 1.01-2.0 mm) were used along with four different mixing ratios (w/w). Subsequently, the physical properties include density, moisture content, WA, and TS, and mechanical properties include modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of the produced WPCs was evaluated. Furthermore, decay resistance was evaluated by the weight loss percentage method. Moreover, the effects of immersion temperatures on WA and TS of WPCs after 24 h of immersion in water at three different temperatures, i.e., 25, 50, and 75 °C were investigated. Results showed that the wood particle size had impact on WPC’s density (only 6% decreased with the increase of particle size); however, the density decreased by 29% when the wood particle content increased from 40 to 70%. The WA and TS gradually increased with the increase of particle content and decrease of particle size. In addition, WA and TS increased proportionately with increasing immersion temperature from 25 to 75 °C. Furthermore, the highest MOE (2570 N/mm2) was found for the WPCs fabricated from large wood particles having the ration of 50:50 (wood particle:PET). For decay resistance, WPCs consisted of larger particles and higher PET content showed greater resistance against decay. Therefore, it is comprehensible that fabrication of the WPCs from 50% large particles and 50% PET is technically feasible and further improvement of WPC performance like enhancement of MOE and reduction of density using coupling agent and agricultural waste fibers, respectively, in the WPC formulation is recommended. The use of wood along with bamboos is now new a dimension of research for decreasing the raw material crisis in pulp industry to run the mill to its full daily production capacity. With this aim, kraft pulping of Albizia richardiana (rajkoroi) wood species in a mixture with Bambusa vulgaris (baizzya) was assessed to incorporate the former species as pulping raw material. Chemical analysis showed that alphacellulose content of B. vulgaris is low but lignin content is high compared to A. richardiana. Pulps were made in kraft process maintaining 25% sulphidity by varying the alkali doses. The temperature was maintained at 170°C during pulping. The chip in the mixture were in the ratio of B. vulgaris : A. richardiana (100:00; 70:30; 50:50; 30:70 and 00:100). Hand sheets were made and the physical strength properties likely tear, tensile and burst were evaluated at two freeness level. The active alkali requirement for bamboo was higher than A. richardiana for same degree of delignification. The pulp yield was low but superior quality pulp could be obtained from B. vulgaris. On the other hand pulp yield for A. richardiana was high but quality was low. Mixing of B. vulgaris chips in a proportion of 30%, pulp yield decreased but strength properties like tear, tensile and burst increased. On further increase of bamboo chips in the furnish, a similar trend was observed. The optimum ratio of chips of B. vulgaris: A. richardiana could be either 30:70 or 50:50 based on pulp yield and quality. The pulp making characteristics of the two species being different, further research on blending the pulps together after individual cooking of the species is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hypocotyl explants of 1 and 10 mm lengths were excised from 12-day-old in vitro-grown seedlings of Albizia richardiana. The larger pieces, after 40 days of culture, developed shoots along with green calli on B + BAP (10-10M), while the smaller segments produced only green calli on B+BAP (10-10M) medium. Some of the green calli turned morphogenic and started producing somatic embryos with the 2nd sub-culture and shoots from 7th sub-culture onwards. Calli retained the morphogenic potential even after repeated sub-culturing for over two years. The number of embryos in an embryogenic culture varied from 2 to 20 per callus mass of 5-6.5 cm. Sucrose at the 2% level in MS medium was optimal for embryogenesis while 4% was optimal for shoot bud differentiation. Higher levels of sucrose (6-10%) caused browning of green calli and also inhibited differentiation into embryos and shoot buds. By selective sub-culturing of 0.1 cm pieces of embryogenic calli on MS+10M BAP, 46% of the cultures produced somatic embryos. The latter germinated into plantlets on Knop's medium. An extremely significant (P < 0.0001) clot lysis was found in MEAR (16.66%) while the standard drug streptokinase (70.94%). Conclusion: All the fractions revealed the significant free radical scavenging activity. Moreover, CTFAR showed wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity.
