Introduction: Sampling by fixed area plots is the usual practice in forest inventories, despite the considerable time involved. An alternative method of sampling is the angle count or Bitterlich method. Objective: To evaluate the accuracy and efficiency of the angle sampling method for the determination of dasometric variables in teak (Tectona grandis L. f.) plantations. Materials and methods: In a three-year teak plantation, 21 circular plots of 500 m2 were established. In each plot, the diameter at breast level, the height and position of each tree, the working times, the number of trees per hectare, the diameter of the average basal area, the total basal area, the average Lorey level and the total volume were determined. Angular sampling was simulated using basal area factors (BAF) of 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2. The estimates of the variables for each BAF and fixed area plots were compared using ANOVA and the relative efficiency was determined. Results and discussion: The ANOVA did not detect significant differences (P Conclusions: Angular counting is accurate and more efficient for estimating dasometric variables in young teak plantations.

El objetivo de la investigación fue evaluar la precisión y eficiencia del método de inventario forestal usando el escáner láser terrestre para la determinación de variables dendrométricas en plantaciones de teca (Tectona grandis Linn. F.). Se establecieron sitios de muestreo circulares de 500 m2 en plantaciones de teca de tres predios de la región Costa de Ecuador donde se usaron las metodologías de inventario forestal tradicional y del escáner láser terrestre, registrando las variables dendrométricas (diámetro normal, altura total y radio de copa) y el tiempo de trabajo necesario para complementar el inventario de cada parcela. Las estimaciones de los índices dasométricos para cada método de inventario y la eficiencia relativa del método del escáner láser terrestre con respecto al inventario forestal tradicional fueron contrastadas mediante pruebas de inferencia estadística. La prueba de contrastes estadísticos aplicada no detectó diferencias significativas entre los dos métodos de inventario en relación tanto con las variables dasométricas medidas como con los tiempos de trabajo registrados en cada parcela. Los valores de eficiencia relativa evidenciaron cierta superioridad del inventario realizado con el escáner láser terrestre sobre el realizado con el inventario forestal tradicional. El presente estudio permite concluir que el método del escáner láser terrestre para la elaboración de inventarios forestales en plantaciones de teca es preciso para la estimación de variables dasométricas, siendo más eficiente que el de inventario tradicional.

In this work, the hypothesis of the convenience of merging data of complementary techniques to carry out forest inventories is tested by fusing data from Remotely Piloted Aircraft System Digital Aerial Photogrammetry (RPAS-DAP) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). The work area was in the Natural Park "Sierra Maria-Los Velez" (Almeria, Spain), constituted of a representative Mediterranean forest composed of two main forest layers: i) predominant trees (reforested Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.)), and ii) understory forest (holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) and different shrubs species). An Object Based Image Analysis (OBIA) pipeline was applied over the corresponding RPAS-DAP RGB orthoimage and a high-resolution Canopy Height Model (CHM) directly derived from the image-based point cloud. This allowed the automatic obtaining of tree delineation, species classification and forest structural attributes (tree height, position and projected crown area). Geometric features derived from the CHM and Green Leaf Index were used to feed a tailored devised OBIA-based method. The very high-resolution fused point cloud, made up from combining TLS and RPAS-DAP point clouds, provided tree-based biometric information such as tree position, diameter at breast height, crown projected area and tree height to estimate forest Above-Ground dry Biomass (AGB) for predominant trees through the allometric equation corresponding to Aleppo pine. In conclusion, the results obtained from the pipeline proposed in this work have shown the complementarity of RPAS image-based methods and TLS to provide timely and efficiently high value-added products such as forest AGB and tree species spatial distribution over Mediterranean forest.

El trabajo se realizó en un área de explotación maderera en bosques naturales en el Estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil, donde se practica el corte selectivo de árboles maduros con fines prescritos en el Plan de Manejo Forestal. El objetivo fue demostrar que el actual esquema de la infraestructura de caminos y acopiaderos de madera aplicada en los planes de manejo no minimiza el costo general de la cosecha de madera. Fue utilizada la información referente a la construcción de caminos y acopiaderos con el tractor de estera FIATALLIS Ad7-b y el arrastre de árboles con el tractor forestal (skidder) CATERPILAR 525 durante 17 jornadas de trabajo. A través del cálculo e interacción de los costos de ambas operaciones se obtuvo un valor mínimo para las mismas. La información fue procesada con el Software PACE (Automated Program for Evaluating Costs). Los resultados demostraron que el modelo sistemático aplicado tradicionalmente en la proyección y construcción de la infraestructura vial en el área de explotación no minimiza el costo del sistema de cosecha de madera. La propuesta reduce en 26,2% la densidad actual de caminos disminuyendo el costo del sistema de cosecha en 0,15 USD.m-3 sin alterar significativamente la productividad y el costo del arrastre de madera.

El manejo forestal sostenible debe armonizar los principios economicos, sociales y ambientales en un area, de forma tal que los bienes y servicios del bosque puedan ser utilizados por las presentes y las futuras generaciones. Esta investigacion se realizo con el objetivo de contribuir al manejo forestal sostenible del Lote 121 de la Unidad Basica de Produccion Forestal Rio Mantua, perteneciente a la Empresa Forestal Macurije de la provincia Pinar del Rio, Cuba. Para su realizacion se evaluo la base de recursos presentes y potenciales en el area de estudio, se zonifico el area, se proyecto el aprovechamiento de los recursos forestales, se analizaron las actividades de proteccion y se elaboro el plan tecnico economico. Entre los principales resultados pueden mencionarse la actualizacion de la informacion de cuatro rodales del Lote 121, el calculo de la existencia de cada uno de los rodales, correspondiendoles un valor medio de 2 447,88 m 3 y la estimacion de una produccion total de resina de 4 561,30 toneladas. Tambien se obtuvo que el plan de tala debe regirse por el metodo de tala por madurez y que la rentabilidad a obtener en el area sera del 56,51%. Palabras clave: gestion forestal, silvicultura, resina ABSTRACT Sustainable forest management must harmonize economic, social and environmental principles in an area, so that forest goods and services can be used by present and future generations. This research was carried out with the objective of contributing to the sustainable forest management of Lot 121 of the Basic Unit of Forest Production Rio Mantua, belonging to the Macurije Forestry Company of the Pinar del Rio province, Cuba. For its realization, the base of present and potential resources in the study area was evaluated, the area was zoned, the exploitation of the forest resources was projected, the protection activities were analyzed and the economic technical plan was elaborated. Among the main results can be mentioned the update of the information of four stands of Lot 121, the calculation of the existence of each one of the stands, corresponding them an average value of 2 447.88 m3 and the estimation of a total production of resin of 4 561.30 tons. It was also obtained that the felling plan must be governed by the felling method by maturity and that the profitability to be obtained in the area will be 56.51%.
