The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be developed using safe and environmentally friendly routes, can replace potentially toxic chemical methods, and can increase the scale of production. This study aimed to synthesize AgNPs from aqueous extracts of guarana (Paullinia cupana) leaves and flowers, collected in different seasons of the year, as a source of active biomolecules capable of reducing silver ions (Ag+) and promoting the stabilization of colloidal silver (Ag0). The plant aqueous extracts were characterized regarding their metabolic composition by liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS/MS), phenolic compound content, and antioxidant potential against free radicals. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV/Vis spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The results demonstrated that the chemical characterization indicated the presence of secondary metabolites of many classes of compounds in the studied aqueous extracts studied, but alkaloids and flavonoids were predominant, which are widely recognized for their antioxidant capabilities. It was possible to notice subtle changes in the properties of the nanostructures depending on parameters such as seasonality and the part of the plant used, with the AgNPs showing surface plasmon resonance bands between 410 and 420 nm using the leaf extract and between 440 and 460 nm when prepared using the flower extract. Overall, the average hydrodynamic diameters of the AgNPs were similar among the samples (61.98 to 101.6 nm). Polydispersity index remained in the range of 0.2 to 0.4, indicating that colloidal stability did not change with storage time. Zeta potential was above −30 mV after one month of analysis, which is adequate for biological applications. TEM images showed AgNPs with diameters between 40.72 to 48.85 nm and particles of different morphologies. EDX indicated silver content by weight between 24.06 and 28.81%. The synthesized AgNPs exhibited antimicrobial efficacy against various pathogenic microorganisms of clinical and environmental interest, with MIC values between 2.12 and 21.25 µg/mL, which is close to those described for MBC values. Therefore, our results revealed the potential use of a native species of plant from Brazilian biodiversity combined with nanotechnology to produce antimicrobial agents.

Free aquifers have become an important water supply option for underdeveloped and developing countries, due to the resource quality and relatively low extraction prices. However, overexploitation and the lack of territorial planning guidelines in these areas endanger groundwater availability and quality. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the vulnerability to groundwater contamination and contribute to the conservation of the ecosystem services, provided by the Guarani aquifer in Brotas, Brazil, by applying the PESTICIDE-DRASTIC-LU model. The application of this model allowed the identification of priority conservation areas within the context of ecosystem services that groundwater provides to local inhabitants. To this end, we collected, treated, and analyzed seven different hydrogeological data to understand the environmental dynamics of the system and to identify which areas are most vulnerable to aquifer contamination. The results pointed out that 64% of the study area presents zones of high and very high vulnerability to contamination, due to the local hydrogeological characteristics (sandy soils and rocks) and the various anthropogenic activities, mainly with large plantations of sugar cane and eucalyptus. In addition, the mapping allowed the spatial demonstration of the places that should be considered a priority for the conservation of ecosystem services provided by local groundwater. Thus, our results can serve as a baseline to define public action strategies for the preservation and sustainable management of the Guarani aquifer areas.

Abstract Several compositional features of sedimentary deposits can be used to reconstruct environmental conditions of source areas. In this research, bulk X‐ray diffraction mineralogy, heavy and clay mineral assemblages and geochemistry obtained for modern deposits of the Cunene River and its tributaries Caculuvar–Mucope are integrated with geological/geomorphological characteristics of respective catchment areas to evaluate to what extent sediment production is spatially variable and source materials are differently affected by exogenous transformations. Detrital sources can be classified into four main types based on sediment composition: felsic, mafic, recycled and mixed. Source contributions obtained with unmixing models using distinct input data reveal some disagreements, with heavy mineral assemblages pointing to higher mafic contribution and bulk XRD‐mineralogy favouring the recycled sedimentary component. However, the three datasets coincide showing a lower supply from the Kalahari Basin than the large outcropping areas of its sedimentary units would suggest, which is attributed to the relatively low rainfall and relief in this region. Where multiple depositional cycles are involved in sediment production the composition of the river deposits, even their clay fractions, will not reflect coeval weathering transformations and an under‐estimation of the mafic component probably occurs. This research reveals how exogenous processes may deviate the composition of the produced sediment from a simple weighted by outcropping area average of the source units and compromise (palaeo)environmental interpretations based on sediment composition.

Systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and, when dysregulated, may cause serious complications. Losartan (LOS) blocks relevant physiological aspects of hypertension, acting mainly on the reduction of peripheral vascular resistance. Complications of hypertension include nephropathy, in which diagnosis is based on the observation of functional or structural renal dysfunction. Therefore, blood pressure control is essential to attenuate the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). In this study, 1H NMR metabolomics were used to differentiate hypertensive and chronic renal patients. Plasmatic levels of LOS and EXP3174, obtained by liquid chromatography coupled with mass-mass spectroscopy, were correlated with blood pressure control, biochemical markers and the metabolomic fingerprint of the groups. Some biomarkers have been correlated with key aspects of hypertension and CKD progression. For instance, higher levels of trigonelline, urea and fumaric acid were found as characteristic markers of kidney failure. In the hypertensive group, the urea levels found could indicate the onset of kidney damage when associated with uncontrolled blood pressure. In this sense, the results point to a new approach to identify CKD in early stages and may contribute to improving pharmacotherapy and reducing morbidity and mortality associated with hypertension and CKD.

Soajo Mountain is located in the northwestern Iberian Peninsula near the border between Portugal and Spain. Its highest elevation is 1416 m at the Pedrada summit. During the Pleistocene, the cascade cirques on the east flank and the icefield that covered the flattened surface of the high plateau generated several glacier valleys. This study presents a paleoglacial reconstruction of the relict glacial landscape in Soajo Mountain for the Glacial Maximum Extent (GME) through the following methods: (1) a detailed geomorphological map supported by high-resolution orthophotography, digital elevation models with a spatial resolution of 70 cm, and field surveys; (2) the delineation of the glacial surface, and the calculation of the glacial flowlines to obtain the numerical model of the ice thickness; and (3) an estimation of the paleoELA altitudes. The paleoglacial reconstruction, using GlaRe methodology, reveals a glacial surface of 16 km2, including an icefield on the Lamas de Vez plateau (mean elevation of 1150 m) and a radial glacial flow to the east and north. The arrangement of the glaciated area attests to the topographic, lithological, and structural conditioning on the development of small glacial tongues, with an emphasis on the ice tongue flowing northwards, with a thickness of 173 m and a length of 2.92 km. The Soajo GME paleoglacier comprises three main glacial sectors: Lamas de Vez Icefield, Vez and Aveleira Valleys, and the Eastern Glacial Sector. These paleoglaciers have achieved maximum ice volumes of 214.4 hm3, 269.2 hm3, and 115.8 hm3, respectively, with maximum ice thicknesses of 127 m, 173 m, and 118 m, respectively. On the west flank, a smaller paleoglacier named Branda da Gémea recorded an ice volume of 24.3 hm3 and a maximum ice thickness of 110 m. According to the ELA-AABR method, Soajo Mountain has one of the lowest ELA values in the Iberian NW, ranging from 1085 to 1057 m. This is due to its oceanic location, an orographic barrier effect, and the influence of the polar front.

Cancer is one of the major public health problems worldwide. Despite the advances in cancer therapy, it remains a challenge due to the low specificity of treatment and the development of multidrug resistance mechanisms. To overcome these drawbacks, several drug delivery nanosystems have been investigated, among them, magnetic nanoparticles (MNP), especially superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION), which have been applied for treating cancer. MNPs have the ability to be guided to the tumor microenvironment through an external applied magnetic field. Furthermore, in the presence of an alternating magnetic field (AMF) this nanocarrier can transform electromagnetic energy in heat (above 42 °C) through Néel and Brown relaxation, which makes it applicable for hyperthermia treatment. However, the low chemical and physical stability of MNPs makes their coating necessary. Thus, lipid-based nanoparticles, especially liposomes, have been used to encapsulate MNPs to improve their stability and enable their use as a cancer treatment. This review addresses the main features that make MNPs applicable for treating cancer and the most recent research in the nanomedicine field using hybrid magnetic lipid-based nanoparticles for this purpose.

The rare-earth element (REE) geochemistry of sedimentary deposits has been used in provenance investigations despite the transformation that this group of elements may suffer during a depositional cycle. In the present investigation, we used the geochemistry and XRD mineralogy of a set of sand and mud fluvial deposits to evaluate the ability of REE parameters in provenance tracing, and the changes in REE geochemistry associated with weathering and sorting. The analyzed deposits were generated in a subtropical drainage basin where mafic and felsic units are evenly represented, and these crystalline rocks are covered by sedimentary successions in a wide portion of the basin. A few element ratios appear to hold robust information about primary sources (Eu/Y, Eu/Eu*, LaN/YbN, LaN/SmN, and GdN/YbN), and the provenance signal is best preserved in sand than in mud deposits. Sediment cycles, however, change the REE geochemistry, affecting mud and sand deposits differently. They are responsible for significant REE depletion through quartz dilution in sands and may promote discernible changes in REE patterns in muds (e.g., increase in Ce content and some light REE depletion relative to heavy REE).

O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a movimentação migratória de esportistas estrangeiros do atletismo, sobretudo os de nacionalidades africanas, face ao seu sucesso em corridas de rua disputadas nas grandes cidades brasileiras. Focamos nossas análises na fala dos técnicos brasileiros de nível internacional que trabalham ou não com este grupo. Os resultados demonstram que os técnicos que treinam os atletas estrangeiros são contrários as normas reguladoras em vigor e que limitam a participação destes. Os técnicos centrados em atletas nacionais defendem as normas estabelecidas pela entidade responsável pelo esporte no país. Como conclusão, consideramos que um esporte individual como o atletismo que se estrutura à margem da identidade clubística, parece estar operando por parte de seus protagonistas sob o guarda chuva protetor do nacionalismo em que o atleta local deve ser defendido mediante reserva do mercado, contra a participação de atletas estrangeiros, sobretudo, na figura dos africanos.

Since horn fly populations became established throughout Brazil, complaints regarding control failure have increased around the country. A broad survey to evaluate the susceptibility of horn flies to both organophosphate (OP) and pyrethroid insecticides was conducted from October 2000 to April 2003. Bioassays using filter papers impregnated with cypermethrin, permethrin or diazinon were conducted on 154 horn fly populations in 14 states and 78 municipalities. Resistance to cypermethrin, the active ingredient present in most insecticide products for horn fly control in Brazil, was detected in 98.46% of the populations, with resistance ratios (RR) ranging from 2.5 to 719.9. Resistance to permethrin (RRs < 6.3) was found in 96.67% of the populations, despite its lack of use. In general, pyrethroid resistance was detected in 97.18% of the horn fly populations, with frequencies greater than 87% in all regions of the country. The status of susceptibility of horn fly populations in Brazil to insecticides can be characterized by high susceptibility to OPs and widespread resistance to pyrethroids, potentially compromising the efficacy of pyrethroid products in most cases. Although some partial results have previously been presented, a general picture of horn fly susceptibility in Brazil is presented here for the first time.Desde a dispersão da mosca-dos-chifres, no Brasil, queixas sobre seu controle aumentaram em todo o país. Um amplo levantamento objetivando avaliar a suscetibilidade da mosca a inseticidas organofosforados (OF) e piretróides foi realizado de outubro de 2000 a abril de 2003. Bioensaios com papéis de filtro impregnados com cipermetrina, permetrina ou diazinon foram conduzidos em 154 populações da mosca-dos-chifres de 14 Estados e 78 municípios. Resistência à cipermetrina, ingrediente ativo presente na maioria dos produtos para controle da mosca-dos-chifres no Brasil, foi detectada em 98,46% das populações, com fatores de resistência (FR) variando de 2,5 a 719,9. Resistência à permetrina (FR < 6,3) foi encontrada em 96,67% das populações testadas, apesar da falta de uso de produtos contendo este princípio ativo. Em geral, resistência a piretróides foi detectada em 97,18% das populações, com frequências acima de 87% em todas as regiões do país. A situação da suscetibilidade da mosca-dos-chifres a inseticidas, no Brasil, pode ser caracterizada por uma elevada suscetibilidade aos organofosforados e ocorrência generalizada de resistência aos piretróides, potencialmente comprometendo a eficácia desses produtos na maioria dos casos. Embora resultados parciais tenham sido apresentados anteriormente, um quadro geral da suscetibilidade da mosca-dos-chifres no Brasil é apresentado pela primeira vez.

O carrapato bovino, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, destaca-se dentre os ectoparasitas de importância econômica à pecuária nacional, tornando-se necessária a adoção de medidas de controle, particularmente em rebanhos Bos taurus e seus cruzamentos. O controle do carrapato tem sido cada vez mais difícil devido à constatação de populações resistentes aos diversos produtos em uso. Neste estudo, teve-se por objetivo conhecer a suscetibilidade desse carrapato a acaricidas em Mato Grosso do Sul. De outubro de 2003 a outubro de 2006, testes carrapaticidogramas foram realizados em onze das principais regiões pecuárias do estado. Nos testes de suscetibilidade, foi utilizada a técnica de imersão de adultos, com posterior avaliação de parâmetros biológicos. Foram testados doze acaricidas comerciais, abrangendo sete princípios ativos (isoladamente ou em associação), pertencentes a três grupos químicos: amidinas (amitraz), piretróides sintéticos (cipermetrina) e organofosforados (clorfenvinfós, clorpirifós, diazinon, diclorvós e etion). Baixa suscetibilidade foi detectada em todas as propriedades, evidenciando uma reduzida eficácia de todos os grupos químicos testados. Apesar da grande variação de suscetibilidade demonstrada pelas distintas populações a cada acaricida testado, foi possível observar um gradiente de eficácia desses produtos. Independente da classe, a eficácia média dos produtos com um único princípio ativo (19,94%-64,27%) foi, de modo geral, menor que a das associações, tanto entre piretróide e organofosforados (46,38%-82,68%), como exclusivamente entre organofosforados (85,28%-97,68%). A associação contendo piretróide, organofosforados, sinergista e repelente (cipermetrina + clorpirifós + butóxido de piperonila + citronelal) apresentou 100% de eficácia, embora testada em menor número de populações. Embora comparações com cepas suscetíveis não tenham sido efetuadas, a baixa suscetibilidade demonstrada aos distintos produtos testados sugere que a resistência do carrapato a diferentes classes esteja amplamente disseminada no Estado, motivo pelo qual recomenda-se a realização rotineira de testes de suscetibilidade antes da seleção e aplicação de produtos acaricidas para controle do carrapato.The cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is one of the most important ectoparasites of bovines, requiring adoption of control measures mainly in Bos taurus herds and its crossbreeds. Its control has becoming increasingly difficult due to selection of resistant populations by commercial products. This study aimed to know the status of cattle tick resistance to acaricides in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. From October 2003 to October 2006 acaricide bioassays were conducted on cattle ticks from eleven of the most important livestock regions of the state. Adult immersion tests using regular commercial products according to label recommendations were followed by the evaluation of biological parameters. Twelve acaricide products containing one or more of seven active ingredients, from three chemical classes: amidine (amitraz), synthetic pyrethroid (cypermethrin), and organophosphates (chlorfenvinphos, chlorpyriphos, diazinon, dichlorvos, and ethion) were tested. Low tick susceptibility was observed in all ranches, with several populations showing virtually no susceptibility to one or more products. Despite the great variation of susceptibility shown by the populations to each acaricide, a gradient of efficacy of these products was observed. Regardless of the acaricide class, the average efficacy of products containing a single active ingredient (19.94%-64.27%) was generally lower than that showed by the mixtures, pyrethroid-organophosphate (46.38%-82.68%) and between organophosphates (85.28%-97.68%). The mixture containing pyrethroid + OF + synergist + repellent (cypermethrin + chlorpyrifos + citronellal + piperonyl butoxide) showed 100% efficacy, although it was tested in a smaller number of populations. Although comparisons with a susceptible strain have not been made, the low efficacy showed by the several different products tested, strongly suggests that tick resistance is widespread in the state. For this reason, it is recommended the routine peruse of susceptibility tests before selection and use of acaricide products for tick control.

A emergência hipertensiva, forma mais grave de manifestação da hipertensão arterial, é uma entidade clínica prevalente com alta morbimortalidade associada. A clevidipina é uma droga pertencente ao grupo dos bloqueadores dos canais de cálcio. Suas características farmacocinéticas favorecem seu uso em emergências hipertensivas tornando-se uma alternativa promissora ao restrito arsenal terapêutico disponível em salas de emergências e unidades de tratamento intensivo. Nesta revisão, descrevemos aspectos de farmacodinâmica, farmacocinética e estudos clínicos que avaliaram a clevidipina no contexto da emergência hipertensiva, comparando-a com medicamentos tradicionalmente utilizados nesta situação.Hypertensive emergency, is the most severe presentation of arterial hypertension, having high morbidity-mortality. Clevidipine is a calcium channel blocker. Its pharmacokinetics is favorable to use for hypertensive emergencies, rendering this drug a promising alternative to the restricted therapeutic armamentarium available both in the emergency room and intensive care unit. In this review we describe the pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and clinical trials evaluating Clevidipine in emergency situations, comparing this drug to other traditionally used drugs in this condition.

Foram estudados 233 casos de fase aguda da doença de Chagas, oriundos do Pará, Amapá e Maranhão, observados no período de 1988 a 2005, cento e sessenta deles retrospectivamente de 1988 a 2002 e setenta e três prospectivamente de 2003 a 2005. Entre os casos estudados 78,5% (183/233) faziam parte de surtos provavelmente por transmissão oral, acometendo em média 4 pessoas e 21,5% (50/233) eram casos isolados. Foram considerados casos agudos aqueles que apresentaram exames parasitológicos diretos (a fresco, gota espessa ou Quantitative Buffy Coat - QBC) e/ou IgM anti-Trypanosoma cruzi positivos. Foram feitos ainda xenodiagnósticos em 224 pacientes e hemoculturas em 213. Todos foram avaliados clinica e epidemiologicamente. As manifestações clínicas mais freqüentes foram febre (100%), cefaléia (92,3%), mialgia (84,1%), palidez (67%), dispnéia (58,4%), edema de membros inferiores (57,9%), edema de face (57,5%) dor abdominal (44,2%), miocardite (39,9%) e exantema (27%). O eletrocardiograma mostrou alterações de repolarização ventricular em 38,5% dos casos, baixa voltagem de QRS em 15,4% e desvio de SAQRS em 11,5%, extra-sístoles ventriculares em 5,8%, bradicardia em 5,8% e taquicardia em 5,8%, bloqueio de ramo direito em 4,8% e fibrilação atrial em 4,8%. A alteração mais freqüente vista no ecocardiograma foi o derrame pericárdico em 46,2% dos casos. Treze (5,6%) pacientes evoluíram para o óbito, 10 (76,9%) dos quais por comprometimento cardiovascular, dois por complicações de origem digestiva e um de causa mal definida.Two hundred and thirty-three cases of the acute phase of Chagas disease, from Pará, Amapá and Maranhão, were observed between 1988 and 2005. One hundred and sixty were studied retrospectively from 1988 to 2002 and seventy-three were prospectively followed up from 2003 to 2005. Among the cases studied, 78.5% (183/233) formed part of outbreaks, probably due to oral transmission (affecting a mean of 4 individuals), and 21.5% (50/233) were isolated cases. Cases were taken to be acute if they presented positive direct parasitological tests (fresh blood, thick drop or Quantitative Buffy Coat, QBC) and/or positive anti Trypanosoma cruzi IgM. Xenodiagnosis was also performed on 224 patients and blood culturing on 213. All the patients had clinical and epidemiological evaluations. The most frequent clinical manifestations were fever (100%), headache (92.3%), myalgia (84.1%), pallor (67%), dyspnea (58.4%), swelling of the legs (57.9%), facial edema (57.5%), abdominal pain (44.3%), myocarditis (39.9%) and exanthema (27%). The electrocardiogram showed abnormalities of ventricular repolarization in 38.5%, low QRS voltage in 15.4%, left-axis deviation in 11.5%, ventricular ectopic beats in 5.8%, bradycardia in 5.8%, tachycardia in 5.8%, right branch block in 4.8% and atrial fibrillation in 4.8%. The most frequently observed abnormality on the echocardiogram was pericardial effusion, in 46.2% of the cases. Thirteen (5.6%) patients died: ten (76.9%) of them due to cardiovascular involvement, two due to digestive complications and one due to indeterminate causes.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho de animais, alimentados com lâminas de folhas verdes (LFV) a 4, 8, 12 e 16% do peso vivo por dia, em pastagens de capim-marandu. O experimento foi conduzido em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições. A avaliação do desempenho dos novilhos F1 Nelore e Charolês foi realizada de outubro de 2002 a junho de 2005, nas estações das águas, em Dourados, MS. Cada unidade experimental foi pastejada em regime de pastejo contínuo e carga animal variável, com quatro animais traçadores que permaneceram no experimento dos 15 aos 23 meses de idade, quando foram abatidos. Foi obtido efeito linear entre as ofertas pretendidas e as observadas. A consistência da ingestão de folhas verdes, independentemente das ofertas, foi evidenciada em novilhos fistulados no esôfago. O ganho médio diário apresentou resposta quadrática às ofertas de LFV, com máximo resultado com a oferta de 11,7% do peso vivo. A carga animal e o ganho por hectare apresentaram resposta quadrática negativa ao aumento das ofertas. As ofertas de 8 a 12% do peso vivo permitem que os animais consumam as folhas verdes, com boa qualidade da dieta.The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of animals, fed with green leaves at 4, 8, 12 and 16% of live weight per day, in marandu grass pastures. The experimental design was in complete randomized blocks, with two replications. Animal performance evaluations were made from October 2002 to June 2005, with steers F1 Nelore and Charolais, along the rainy seasons, in Dourados County, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Four tester animals - 15 to 23 months old - grazed each experimental unit, under continuous grazing and put-and-take technique; the animals were, afterwards, slaughtered. Linear effect was obtained for the intended and observed forage allowances. The consistency of green leaf ingestions by the animals (independently of the offers) was evidenced in esophagus-fistulated steers. The average daily gain showed quadratic response in relation to the green leaf offers, with its optimum level at 11.7% live weight. Stoking rate and live weight gain per hectare presented a negative quadratic effect to the increase of blade dry matter offers. The offers of 8 to 12% live weight allow animals to feed on green leaf blades and to have a good quality diet.

Horn fly susceptibility to insecticides was evaluated in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, from October 2000 to September 2002. Insecticide bioassays (n=57) were conducted in 38 ranches from 14 municipalities throughout the state. Horn flies from wild populations were collected on cattle and exposed to filter papers impregnated with cypermethrin, permethrin, or diazinon and mortality was assessed after two hours. Resistance to cypermethrin was detected in all populations, with resistance ratios (RR) ranging from 27.6 to 91.3-fold. OBJETIVO: Identificar os perfis clínico/angiográfico e relacionados ao procedimento de pacientes com angina instável atendidos em um hospital terciário e tratados por meio de intervenções coronarianas percutâneas. MÉTODOS: Estudo de uma casuística consecutiva de 1.413 pacientes, selecionados a partir de um banco de dados informatizado e revascularizados percutaneamente no triênio 2002-2004. Não houve critérios de inclusão/exclusão. RESULTADOS: Hipertensão arterial sistêmica (74%) e hipercolesterolemia (65%) foram os fatores de risco clássicos para doença coronariana mais observados. Antecedentes de infarto do miocárdio e cirurgia de revascularização miocárdica foram respectivamente observados em 28% e 24% dos casos. Os subgrupos mais comumente tratados foram o IIB (48%) e IIIB (28%). O clopidogrel foi prescrito a 51% dos pacientes, enquanto os inibidores IIb IIIa foram utilizados em 7%. Doença coronariana multiarterial na cinecoronariografia diagnóstica ocorreu em 42% dos casos. Lesões-alvo tipo B2 ou C foram tratadas em 64%, das quais 94% situavam-se em vasos naturais. Lesões reestenóticas foram dilatadas em 5% dos pacientes. Todas as intervenções foram realizadas utilizando os stents coronarianos, a maioria dos quais (67%) do tipo convencional. CONCLUSÕES: 1) os subgrupos IIB e IIIB foram os mais comumente tratados (76%); 2) o clopidogrel foi o antitrombótico mais prescrito (51%); 3) a coronariopatia multiarterial foi observada em 42% dos casos, com predomínio de lesões-alvo complexas e situadas em vasos naturais; 4) a técnica de dilatação predominante foi o implante dos stents coronarianos.OBJECTIVE: To identify clinical and angiographic profiles of patients with unstable angina seen at a tertiary hospital and treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). METHODS: Study of a consecutive series of 1413 patients, selected from a computerized database, who underwent percutaneous revascularization in the three-year period of 2002-2004. There were no inclusion/exclusion criteria. RESULTS: Systemic arterial hypertension (74%) and hypercholesterolemia (65%) were the classical risk factors for coronary disease most frequently observed. Coronary artery bypass grafting and history of myocardial infarction were found in 24% and 28% of the cases, respectively. The subgroups most commonly treated were the IIB (48%) and IIIB (28%). Clopidogrel was prescribed for 51% of the patients and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors, for 7%. Multivessel disease evidenced by coronary angiography was detected in 42% of the cases. Type B2 or C lesions were treated in 64%, 94% of which in native vessels. Restenotic lesions were dilated in 5% of the patients. All interventions were performed using coronary stents, the majority of which (67%) were standard bare-metal stents. CONCLUSIONS: 1) Subgroups IIB and IIIB were the most frequently treated (76%); 2) Clopidogrel was the most prescribed antithrombotic agent (51%); 3) Multivessel coronary artery disease was found in 42% of the cases, most of which were complex target lesions located in native vessels; 4) Coronary stent implantation was the chief dilation technique used.

In the present report we describe the results from a pilot study aimed at detecting enterovirus sequence in cardiac tissues, obtained through endomyocardial biopsies, from patients suffering from cardiac diseases in the Amazon region. Six samples that were collected from three patients were analysed by RT-PCR showing 3 positive and 3 negative results. These preliminary findings suggest the participation of enteroviruses in the etiology of cardiac diseases, mainly myocarditis, and warrant further and broader local studies on this subject.

A total of 179 individuals with acute Chagas disease mainly transmitted by oral source, from Pará and Amapá State, Amazonian, Brazil were included during the period from 1988 to 2005. Blood samples were used to survey peripheral blood for T. cruzi hemoparasites by quantitative buffy coat (QBC), indirect xenodiagnosis, blood culture and serology to detection of total IgM and anti-T. cruzi IgG antibodies by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and indirect hemagglutination assay (HA). All assays were performed pre-treatment (0 days) and repeated 35 (±7) and 68 (±6) days after the initiation of treatment with benznidazol and every 6 months while remained seropositive. The endpoint of collection was performed in 2005. Total medium period of follow-up per person was 5.6 years. Also, a blood sample was collected from 72 randomly chosen treated patients to perform polimerase chain reaction (PCR) method. Proportions of subjects with negative or positive serology according to the number of years after treatment were compared. In the endpoint of follow-up we found 47 patients (26.7%) serologically negative, therefore considered cured and 5 (2.7%) exhibited mild cardiac Chagas disease. Other 132 patients had persistent positive serologic tests. The PCR carried out in 72 individuals was positive in 9.8%. Added, there was evidence of therapeutic failure immediately following treatment, as demonstrated by xenodiagnosis and blood culture methods in 2.3% and 3.5% of cases, respectively. There was a strong evidence of antibody clearing in the fourth year after treatment and continuous decrease of antibody titers. Authors suggest that control programs should apply operational researches with new drug interventions four years after the acute phase for those treated patients with persistently positive serology.

Este estudo apresenta uma proposta metodológica, no âmbito da geo-engenharia, para a avaliação geotécnica e cartografia de estruturas de protecção costeira (esporões) na região de Espinho (NW de Portugal). Foram seguidas as recomendações e a terminologia do manual do uso de rochas em engenharia costeira (CIRIA/CUR, 1991; CIRIA et al., 2007) e a proposta de caracterização/avaliação geológico-geotécnica da ISRM (1978, 1981). Apresenta-se uma proposta de ficha geotécnica aplicada ao reconhecimento e inspecção visual dos blocos do material-rocha da estrutura e, com o recurso a imagens aéreas de alta resolução orto-rectificadas e georreferenciadas. De seguida, realizou-se uma cartografia aplicada de pormenor dos blocos rochosos que deu origem a mapas temáticos do esporão e, assim, permitiram uma avaliação segundo diferentes parâmetros geológico-geotécnicos. Apresentam-se, por fim, algumas sugestões que poderão contribuir para o planeamento de uma obra deste tipo, bem como para a caracterização do estado de conservação da estrutura e da sua evolução.

The green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be developed using safe and environmentally friendly routes, can replace potentially toxic chemical methods, and can increase the scale of production. This study aimed to synthesize AgNPs from aqueous extracts of guarana (Paullinia cupana) leaves and flowers, collected in different seasons of the year, as a source of active biomolecules capable of reducing silver ions (Ag+) and promoting the stabilization of colloidal silver (Ag0). The plant aqueous extracts were characterized regarding their metabolic composition by liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS/MS), phenolic compound content, and antioxidant potential against free radicals. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV/Vis spectrophotometry, dynamic light scattering (DLS), nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy coupled to energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). The results demonstrated that the chemical characterization indicated the presence of secondary metabolites of many classes of compounds in the studied aqueous extracts studied, but alkaloids and flavonoids were predominant, which are widely recognized for their antioxidant capabilities. It was possible to notice subtle changes in the properties of the nanostructures depending on parameters such as seasonality and the part of the plant used, with the AgNPs showing surface plasmon resonance bands between 410 and 420 nm using the leaf extract and between 440 and 460 nm when prepared using the flower extract. Overall, the average hydrodynamic diameters of the AgNPs were similar among the samples (61.98 to 101.6 nm). Polydispersity index remained in the range of 0.2 to 0.4, indicating that colloidal stability did not change with storage time. Zeta potential was above −30 mV after one month of analysis, which is adequate for biological applications. TEM images showed AgNPs with diameters between 40.72 to 48.85 nm and particles of different morphologies. EDX indicated silver content by weight between 24.06 and 28.81%. The synthesized AgNPs exhibited antimicrobial efficacy against various pathogenic microorganisms of clinical and environmental interest, with MIC values between 2.12 and 21.25 µg/mL, which is close to those described for MBC values. Therefore, our results revealed the potential use of a native species of plant from Brazilian biodiversity combined with nanotechnology to produce antimicrobial agents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
