Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are large-area sunlight collectors for efficient solar-to-electricity conversion. The key point for highly efficient LSCs is the choice of fluorophores, which need to have broad absorption, high quantum yield and large Stokes shift. Among various fluorophores, carbon quantum dots (C-dots) hold great promise as eco-friendly alternatives to heavy-metal-containing quantum dots (QDs) due to their adjustable absorption and emission spectra, non-toxicity, low cost and eco-friendly synthetic methods. However, due to the limited absorption band and relatively low quantum yield in the red region, it is a challenge to obtain efficient LSCs based on C-dots. Here, we demonstrated highly efficient LSCs based on red-emissive C-dots. The as-synthesized C-dots have a cubic structure, broad absorption covering 300-600 nm, and red emission (peak located at 595 nm), with a high quantum yield of ∼65% and a large Stokes shift of 0.45 eV. Transient absorption experiments of the C-dots revealed the ultrafast formation of the broad emissive state (1 ps). Based on the excellent optical properties of the C-dots, the as-prepared large-area LSC (10 × 10 × 0.52 cm3) exhibited an optimized external optical efficiency of 4.81% and a power conversion efficiency of 2.41% under natural sun irradiation (70 mW cm−2). Furthermore, a tandem LSC using green-emissive C-dots (top layer) and red-emissive C-dots (bottom layer) as fluorophores exhibited an external optical efficiency as high as 6.78%. These findings demonstrate the possibility of using eco-friendly carbon-based nanomaterials for highly efficient large-area LSCs. Among the existing materials for heat conversion, high-entropy alloys are of great interest due to the tunability of their functional properties. Here, we aim to produce single-phase high-entropy oxides composed of Co-Cr-Fe-Mn-Ni-O through spark plasma sintering (SPS), testing their thermoelectric (TE) properties. This material was successfully obtained before via a different technique, which requires a very long processing time. Hence, the main target of this work is to apply spark plasma sintering, a much faster and scalable process. The samples were sintered in the temperature range of 1200–1300 °C. Two main phases were formed: rock salt-structured Fm3̅m and spinel-structured Fd3̅m. Comparable transport properties were achieved via the new approach: the highest value of the Seebeck coefficient reached −112.6 μV/K at room temperature, compared to −150 μV/K reported before; electrical properties at high temperatures are close to the properties of the single-phase material (σ = 0.2148 S/cm, σ ≈ 0.2009 S/cm reported before). These results indicate that SPS can be successfully applied to produce highly efficient TE high-entropy alloys in a fast and scalable way. Further optimization is needed for the production of single-phase materials, which are expected to exhibit an even better TE functionality. Nanostructured TiO2 is one of the best materials for photocatalysis, thanks to its high surface area and surface reactivity, but its large energy bandgap (3.2 eV) hinders the use of the entire solar spectrum. Here, it is proposed that defect-engineered nanostructured TiO2 photocatalysts are obtained by hydrogenation strategy to extend its light absorption up to the near-infrared region. It is demonstrated that hydrogenated or colored TiO2 hollow spheres (THS) composed of hierarchically assembled nanoparticles result in much broader exploitation of the solar spectrum (up to 1200 nm) and the engineered surface enhances the photogeneration of charges for photocatalytic processes. In turn, when applied for photodegradation of a targeted drug (Ciprofloxacin) this results in 82% degradation after 6 h under simulated sunlight. Valence band analysis by photoelectron spectroscopy revealed the presence of oxygen vacancies, whose surface density increases with the hydrogenation rate. Thus, a tight correlation between degree of hydrogenation and photocatalytic activity is directly established. Further insight comes from electron paramagnetic resonance, which evidences bulk Ti3+ centers only in hydrogenated THS. The results are anticipated to disclose a new path toward highly efficient photocatalytic titania in a series of applications targeting water remediation and solar fuel production. TiO2 thin films are known to promote photodegradation of dyes and pollutants in water solution via heterogeneous photocatalysis. This ability is guided by the photoexcitation through photons having energies above the band gap. To improve photocatalytic activity, nanostructures with high surface area can be applied, which can ease molecular adsorption/desorption mechanisms, enhance electronic transfer properties and lower excitation energy. For this purpose, square cross-section TiO2 vertically aligned nanorod (TNR) array configuration has been chosen as a semiconductor substrate. On top of it, a thin layer of sub-stoichiometric TiO2−x has been deposited, aiming at inducing a vacancy doped homojunction between two different oxygen rich/deficient TiO2 layers, possibly leading to lower band gap and enhanced photochemical activity. In principle, promotion of electron and holes separation and suppression of charge recombination could occur. Vertically aligned TNRs have been deposited through a hydrothermal growth in acidic conditions on a pre-seeded glass conducting substrate, optimizing the seeding process through spin coating. Sub-stoichiometric TiO2−x layer (50 nm nominal thickness) has been deposited on top of TNRs via radiofrequency magnetron sputtering at three different stoichiometries, tuning the oxygen partial pressure in sputtering argon atmosphere at 10 %, 15 % and 20 %, respectively. Photocatalytic activity has been investigated in the photodegradation of an aqueous solution of methylene blue, both under UV and simulated solar light irradiation at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, resulting in the degradation of methylene blue target molecule up to 99 % under UV and 85 % under simulated solar irradiation after 6 h. These promising achievements unlock new environmental applications for enhanced dye degradation industrial processes. Metal borides/borates have been considered promising as oxygen evolution reaction catalysts; however, to date, there is a dearth of evidence of long-term stability at practical current densities. Here we report a phase composition modulation approach to fabricate effective borides/borates-based catalysts. We find that metal borides in-situ formed metal borates are responsible for their high activity. This knowledge prompts us to synthesize NiFe-Boride, and to use it as a templating precursor to form an active NiFe-Borate catalyst. This boride-derived oxide catalyzes oxygen evolution with an overpotential of 167 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte and requires a record-low overpotential of 460 mV to maintain water splitting performance for over 400 h at current density of 1 A/cm2. We couple the catalyst with CO reduction in an alkaline membrane electrode assembly electrolyser, reporting stable C2H4 electrosynthesis at current density 200 mA/cm2 for over 80 h., Metal borides/borates are promising candidates to become high-performance alkaline oxygen evolution reaction catalysts. This study reports an in-situ phase composition modulation approach to fabricate boride/borate-based catalysts.

The combination of the ability to absorb most of the solar radiation and simultaneously suppress infrared re-radiation allows selective solar absorbers to maximize solar energy to heat conversion, which is critical to several advanced applications1,2. The intrinsic spectral selective materials are rare in nature and only a few demonstrated complete solar absorption3. Typically, intrinsic materials exhibit high performances only when they are integrated as a component in multilayered complex solar absorbers, due to their limited spectral selectivity and solar absorption4. In this study, we propose CoSbx(2x endows broadband solar absorption of 0.98 over the solar spectral range and simultaneous low emissivity (0.18) in the mid-infrared region. Here we report a high intrinsic spectral solar selectivity of 5.4 for the nanostructured narrow bandgap semiconductor CoSbx. Under 1 sun illumination, the heat concentrates on the surface of the thin film of CoSbx, and a high temperature of 101.7 °C is reached, demonstrating the highest value among reported selective solar absorbers. Furthermore, the CoSbx was tested for solar water evaporation achieving an evaporation rate of 1.4 kg∙m-2∙h-1. This study may broaden the application of narrow bandgap semiconductors for use as highly efficient intrinsic selective solar absorbers and high surface temperature usage under solar illumination.

Various studies report that Tb3+/Yb3+ co-doped materials can split one UV or 488 nm (visible) photon in two near infrared (NIR) photons at 980 nm by an energy-transfer process involving one Tb3+ and two Yb3+ ions. Additionally, it was demonstrated that Ag multimers can provide an efficient optical sensitizing effect for rare earth ions (RE3+ ions), resulting in a broadband enhanced excitation, which could have a significant technological impact, overcoming their limited spectral absorptions and small excitation cross sections. However, a systematic and detailed investigation of the down-conversion process enhanced by Ag nanoaggregates is still lacking, which is the focus of this paper. Specifically, a step by step analysis of the energy-transfer quantum-cutting chain in Ag-exchanged Tb3+/Yb3+ co-doped glasses and glass-ceramics is presented. Moreover, the direct Ag-Yb3+ energy-transfer is also considered. Results of structural, compositional, and optical characterizations are given, providing quantitative data for the efficient broadband Ag-sensitization of Tb3+/Yb3+ quantum cutting. A deeper understanding of the physical processes beneath the optical properties of the developed materials will allow a wiser realization of more efficient energy-related devices, such as spectral converters for silicon solar cells and light-emitting devices (LEDs) in the visible and NIR spectral regions.

Water splitting is considered one of the most promising approaches to power the globe without the risk of environmental pollution. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is even more challenging because the generation of only one oxygen molecule involves the transfer of four e- and removal of four H+ ions from water. Thus, developing highly efficient catalysts to meet industrial requirements remains a focus of attention. Herein, the prominent role of Sn in accelerating the electron transfer kinetics of Ni5P4 nanosheets in OER is reported. The post catalytic survey elucidates that the electrochemically induced Ni-Sn oxides at the vicinity of phosphides are responsible for the observed catalytic activity, delivering current densities of 10, 30, and 100 mA cm-2 at overpotentials of only 173 ± 5.2, 200 ±7.4, and 310 ± 5.5 mV, respectively. The density functional theory calculation also supports the experimental findings from the basis of the difference observed in density of states at the Fermi level in the presence/absence of Sn. This work underscores the role of Sn in OER and opens a promising avenue toward practical implementation of hydrogen production through water splitting and other catalytic reactions.

Coupling electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R) with a renewable energy source to create high‐value fuels and chemicals is a promising strategy in moving toward a sustainable global energy economy. CO2R liquid products, such as formate, acetate, ethanol, and propanol, offer high volumetric energy density and are more easily stored and transported than their gaseous counterparts. However, a significant amount (~30%) of liquid products from electrochemical CO2R in a flow cell reactor cross the ion exchange membrane, leading to the substantial loss of system‐level Faradaic efficiency. This severe crossover of the liquid product has—until now—received limited attention. Here, we review promising methods to suppress liquid product crossover, including the use of bipolar membranes, solid‐state electrolytes, and cation‐exchange membranes‐based acidic CO2R systems. We then outline the remaining challenges and future prospects for the production of concentrated liquid products from CO2.

For an active hydrogen gas generation through water dissociation, the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics due to large overpotential is a main hindrance. Herein, a simple approach is used to produce composite material based on TiO2/Co3O4 for efficient OER and overpotential is linearly reduced with increasing amount of TiO2. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) investigations reveal the wire like morphology of composite materials, formed by the self-assembly of nanoparticles. The titania nanoparticles were homogenously distributed on the larger Co3O4 nanoparticles. The powder x-ray diffraction revealed a tetragonal phase of TiO2 and the cubic phase of Co3O4 in the composite materials. Composite samples with increasing TiO2 content were obtained (18%, 33%, 41% and 65% wt.). Among the composites, cobalt oxide-titanium oxide with the highest TiO2 content (CT-20) possesses the lowest overpotential for OER with a Tafel slope of 60 mV dec−1 and an exchange current density of 2.98 × 10−3A/cm2. The CT-20 is highly durable for 45 h at different current densities of 10, 20 and 30 mA/cm2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed the fast charge transport for the CT-20 sample, which potentially accelerated the OER kinetics. These results based on a two-step methodology for the synthesis of TiO2/Co3O4 material can be useful and interesting for various energy storage and energy conversion systems.

Carbon nanotube/polymer composites have recently received considerable attention for thermoelectric (TE) applications. The TE power factor can be significantly improved by forming composites with carbon nanotubes. However, the formation of a uniform and well-ordered nanocomposite film is still challenging because of the creation of agglomerates and the uneven distribution of nanotubes. Here, we developed a facile, efficient, and easy-processable route to produce uniform and aligned nanocomposite films of P3HT and carbon nanotube forest (CNTF). The electrical conductivity of a pristine P3HT film was improved from ∼10–7 to 160 S/cm thanks to the presence of CNTF. Also, a further boost in TE performance was achieved using two additives, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) and tert-butylpyridine. By adding the additives to P3HT, the degree of interchain order increased, which facilitated the charge transport through the composite. Under the optimal conditions, the incorporation of CNTF and additives led to values of the Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity, and power factor up to rising 92 μV/K, 130 S/cm, and 110 μW/m K2, respectively, at a temperature of 344.15 K. The excellent TE performance of the hybrid films originates from the dramatically increased electrical conductivity and the improved Seebeck coefficient by CNTF and additives, respectively.

Optical nanothermometers have attracted much attention due to their non-contact and precise measurement with high spatial resolution at the micro- and nanoscales. They can be applied in various fields such as micro-opto-electronics, photonics, and biomedical thermal and pH sensing, while most thermal sensors reported so far contain heavy metals or have low sensitivity. Herein, we demonstrate a highly sensitive ratiometric thermal sensor based on colloidal C-dots. C-dots exhibit dual emission originating from the band gap emission and surface-dominant emission, which show a different temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) response. Among different surface-functionalized C-dots, C-dots@OH exhibit an absolute thermal sensitivity of -0.082 °C-1, which is the highest among various types of ratiometric thermosensors, making it a very promising candidate for high-sensitivity, self-calibrated nanoscale thermometry. As a proof-of-concept, C-dots@OH were employed to monitor the intracellular temperature (32-42 °C), showing a clear trend for temperature variation in a single cell, indicating that C-dots could offer a powerful tool for a potential precise measurement of the intracellular temperature. They could also be used as thermal sensors for nano-electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) are large-area sunlight collectors coupled to small area solar cells, for efficient solar-to-electricity conversion. The three key points for the successful market penetration of LSCs are: (i) removal of light losses due to reabsorption during light collection; (ii) high light-to-electrical power conversion efficiency of the final device; (iii) long-term stability of the LSC structure related to the stability of both the matrix and the luminophores. Among various types of fluorophores, carbon quantum dots (C-dots) offer a wide absorption spectrum, high quantum yield, non-toxicity, environmental friendliness, low-cost, and eco-friendly synthetic methods. However, they are characterized by a relatively small Stokes shift, compared to inorganic quantum dots, which limits the highest external optical efficiency that can be obtained for a large-area single-layer LSC (>100 cm2) based on C-dots below 2%. Herein, we report highly efficient large-area LSCs (100–225 cm2) based on colloidal C-dots synthesized via a space-confined vacuum-heating approach. This one batch reaction could produce Gram-scale C-dots with a high quantum yield (QY) (∼65%) using eco-friendly citric acid and urea as precursors. Thanks to their very narrow size distribution, the C-dots produced via the space-confined vacuum-heating approach had a large Stokes shift of 0.53 eV, 50% larger than C-dots synthesized via a standard solvothermal reaction using the same precursors with a similar absorption range. The large-area LSC (15 × 15 × 0.5 cm3) prepared by using polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) polymer as a matrix exhibited an external optical efficiency of 2.2% (under natural sun irradiation, 60 mW cm−2, uncharacterized spectrum). After coupling to silicon solar cells, the LSC exhibited a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 1.13% under natural sunlight illumination (20 mW cm−2, uncharacterized spectrum). These unprecedented results were obtained by completely suppressing the reabsorption losses during light collection, as proved by optical spectroscopy. These findings demonstrate the possibility of obtaining eco-friendly, high-efficiency, large-area LSCs through scalable production techniques, paving the way to the lab-to-fab transition of this kind of devices.

Silicon-based fluorescent nanomaterials have attracted widespread attention in latent fingerprint detection and white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) due to their high photoluminescence, low toxicity and good stability. However, it is still challenging to fabricate solid-state silicon-based nanomaterials with a high quantum yield because of their severe emission quenching properties. Herein, one-step hydrothermal synthesis of polymer-like coated organosilica nanoparticles (OSiNPs) with strong blue luminescence emission by using N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (DAMO), zinc chloride and sodium citrate as precursors is reported. The self-quenching-resistant polymer-like coated OSiNP powder can be easily obtained by ethanol precipitation and oven drying, and the absolute photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) can reach up to 73.3%. The possible formation mechanism of polymer-like coated OSiNPs is proposed. Because of the strong solid-state fluorescence, the OSiNP powder can be successfully applied in rapid latent fingerprint detection with enhanced imaging on various substrate surfaces and integrated with commercial phosphor on UV chips to fabricate WLEDs.

The work introduces hydrophilic PSS-[Tb2(TCAn)2] nanoparticles to be applied as highly sensitive intracellular temperature nanosensors. The nanoparticles are synthesized by solvent-induced nanoprecipitation of [Tb2(TCAn)2] complexes (TCAn - thiacalix[4]arenes bearing different upper-rim substituents: unsubstituted TCA1, tert-buthyl-substituted TCA2, di- and tetra-brominated TCA3 and TCA4) with the use of polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) as stabilizer. The temperature responsive luminescence behavior of PSS-[Tb2(TCAn)2] within 293–333 K range in water is modulated by reversible changes derived from the back energy transfer from metal to ligand (M* → T1) correlating with the energy gap between the triplet levels of ligands and resonant 5D4 level of Tb3+ ion. The lowering of the triplet level (T1) energies going from TCA1 and TCA2 to their brominated counterparts TCA3 and TCA4 facilitates the back energy transfer. The highest ever reported temperature sensitivity for intracellular temperature nanosensors is obtained for PSS-[Tb2(TCA4)2] (SI = 5.25% K−1), while PSS-[Tb2(TCA3)2] is characterized by a moderate one (SI = 2.96% K−1). The insignificant release of toxic Tb3+ ions from PSS-[Tb2(TCAn)2] within heating/cooling cycle and the low cytotoxicity of the colloids point to their applicability in intracellular temperature monitoring. The cell internalization of PSS-[Tb2(TCAn)2] (n = 3, 4) marks the cell cytoplasm by green Tb3+-luminescence, which exhibits detectable quenching when the cell samples are heated from 303 to 313 K. The colloids hold unprecedented potential for in vivo intracellular monitoring of temperature changes induced by hyperthermia or pathological processes in narrow range of physiological temperatures.

Fair and meaningful device per- formance comparison among luminescent solar concentrator- photovoltaic (LSC-PV) reports cannot be realized without a gen- eral consensus on reporting stan- dards in LSC-PV research. There- fore, it is imperative to adopt standardized characterization protocols for these emerging types of PV devices that are consistent with other PV devices. This commentary highlights several common limitations in LSC literature and summarizes the best practices moving for- ward to harmonize with standard PV reporting, considering the greater nuances present with LSC-PV. Based on these prac- tices, a checklist of actionable items is provided to help stan- dardize the characterization/re- porting protocols and offer a set of baseline expectations for au- thors, reviewers, and editors. The general consensus combined with the checklist will ultimately guide LSC-PV research towards reliable and meaningful ad- vances.

The exploration of an efficient electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is urgently required for sustainable renewable-energy conversion and storage. Due to the increased chemical complexity, multimetallic catalysts provide flexibility to alter their electronic and crystal structure to attain a superior intrinsic catalytic activity via synergistic effects, which is seldom accomplished using single metal catalysts. However, the high chemical complexity increases the difficulty to prepare elemental homogenous catalysts and reveal their synergistic effect during OER process, which further hinder the design of multimetallic catalysts. Here, high entropy concept is utilized to design an NiFeCoMnAl oxide with amorphous structure as OER catalyst. The direct evidence of active Ni sites is provided by the operando Raman measurements and Fe can modify oxygen intermediates binding energy on Ni sites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveal that the incorporation of Mn can construct the electron-rich environment of active Ni center, and the relatively lower oxidation state of Ni facilitates the self-construction of β-NiOOH intermediates, which shows promoted OER activity as confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Doping Co can enhance the conductivity and doping Al leads to the formation of nanoporous structure through dealloying process, thus each component is essential for improving OER performance. The optimized NiFeCoMnAl catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 190 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH solution, much superior to the ternary and quaternary counterparts. This work sheds light on understanding the origin of high entropy catalysts’ OER activity and thereby enables the rational design of multinary transition metallic catalysts.

This review article summarizes the synthesis and the fluorescence mechanism together with the most important applications in thermometry, bio-imaging, LSCs and photocatalysis of red/near-infrared C-dots.

An efficient and cost-effective approach for the development of advanced catalysts has been regarded as a sustainable way for green energy utilization. The general guideline to design active and efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is to achieve high intrinsic activity and the exposure of more density of the interfacial active sites. The heterointerface is one of the most attractive ways that plays a key role in electrochemical water oxidation. Herein, atomically cluster-based heterointerface catalysts with strong metal support interaction (SMSI) between WMn2O4 and TiO2 are designed. In this case, the WMn2O4 nanoflakes are uniformly decorated by TiO2 particles to create electronic effect on WMn2O4 nanoflakes as confirmed by X-ray absorption near edge fine structure. As a result, the engineered heterointerface requires an OER onset overpotential as low as 200 mV versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which is stable for up to 30 h of test. The outstanding performance and long-term durability are due to SMSI, the exposure of interfacial active sites, and accelerated reaction kinetics. To confirm the synergistic interaction between WMn2O4 and TiO2, and the modification of the electronic structure, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) are used.
