The use of cardiac computed tomography (cardiac CT) and the quantification of the Agatston score for the evaluation of calcium of the aortic valve (AVC) has increased in different clinical contexts for diagnostic and prognostic purposes. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between cardiac CT and histopathology for the quantification of AVC.Ninety patients diagnosed with severe aortic valve dysfunction, of any etiology and regardless of the predominant type of injury, were included. Before the surgical event, a Cardiac CT were performed with Agatston Score measurement. The removed native valve was evaluated by a Pathologist, who provided a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of valve calcium. Calcium density was also analyzed by quantifying the area in pixel units obtained from photomicrographs. Follow-up was performed for four years after the aortic valve replacement.Ninety patients were analyzed. The degenerative etiology predominated 63.3% (57 patients). The calcium load was different for the gender (p = 0.01) and type of valve injury (p = 0.0013). There was a positive correlation between the Agatston score, and the percentage of calcium reported by the pathologist in a conventional qualitative way (rs = 0.75, p0.001) and between the AVC and the Cote et al. score (rs = 0.77, p0.001). There was no difference in survival after aortic valve replacement concerning valve calcium load. Left ventricular dysfunction showed a significant difference in survival (p = 0.003, Log-rank).There is a moderately high correlation between the Agatston score quantified by Cardiac CT and the histopathological evaluation. The severity of the calcification did not prove to be a predictor of death in the postsurgical follow-up.

El presente trabajo de investigación tuvo como objetivo determinar si el uso de anticonceptivos orales se asocia con la artritis reumatoide en mujeres adultas. Se realizó un estudio de caso-control, con 282 mujeres entre 20 a 59 años, siendo 94 casos y 188 controles. Se encontró que el 18,1% de mujeres adultas que usaron anticonceptivos orales (AO) presentaron artritis reumatoide (AR); mientras que un 42,0 % de ellas no presentaron AR. Además se encontró que el 81,9% de las mujeres con AR no usaron AO y el 58,0% de mujeres sin AR no consumieron AO. Encontrando un p< 0,01, OR= 0,30; IC95% de 0,17 a 0,55. En el grupo de mujeres con AR el 15,96% tenían entre 50 a 59 años; en el caso de féminas sin AR predominó entre 20 a 29 años con 35,46%. Para el tiempo de uso de AO, el porcentaje de mujeres con AR que usaron AO por menos de 7 años es 27,46% (p=0,92). El uso de anticonceptivos orales se asocia a la artritis reumatoide como factor protector; a mayor edad presentaron más artritis reumatoide utilizando anticonceptivos orales por un periodo menor a siete años.

Se explica de manera breve, la historia sobre la evolución, uso y aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías, esto permitirá al lector situarse en la realidad digital del país, generando conciencia crítica sobre el estado actual de las herramientas comunicativas e informativas que pueden ayudar al avance y desarrollo de la población. Las condiciones sociales y culturales han sido el mayor problema que sectores en riesgo han encontrado debido a la pobreza, bajos índices de educación, oportunidades laborales limitadas, no permiten abolir la miseria y donde se impone respetar las riquezas de los grupos mayormente globalizados.

This paper will analyze the role and importance of ICT in the teaching-learning process in the Educational Unit of the Providence of the city of Guayaquil. The use of the virtual tools within the institution proposes a first approach to the educational reality which will serve as the basis for the development of new imaging techniques that are based on the use of ICTS.A joint approach with research through surveys and interviews to teachers of the institution, which will allow you to know how students access and are involved with the technology replacing the traditional methodology of teaching. El presente trabajo analiza la función e importancia que cumplen las TIC en el proceso de enseñanza –aprendizaje en la Unidad Educativa de la Providencia de la ciudad de Guayaquil. El uso de las herramientas virtuales dentro de la institución propone un primer acercamiento a la realidad educativa que servirá de base para la implementación de nuevas técnicas que parten del uso de las TIC.Se desarrolló una investigación con enfoque mixto mediante entrevistas y encuestas realizadas a docentes de la institución, lo que permitió saber cómo los estudiantes acceden y se involucran con la tecnología reemplazando la metodología tradicional de enseñanza.

When aneurysm of the root of aorta, bicuspid aorta valve and coarctation coexist, surgical repair involves technical problems. We present the case of a patient in whom initial correction of the coarctation was made by means of interventional treatment, with an impressive and practically immediate resolution of heart failure. In a second intervartional, the aortic root pathology was corrected through the Bentall and de Bono's surgical technique. We present the short- and mid-term results. In addition this case demostrates the little well-know fact, that the patients with bicuspid aorta also have cystic media degeneration of the wall of the aorta.
