Objectives Materials and Methods Results Conclusion We assessed the radiation dosages (Dmean) on implant regions to identify the threshold for implant loss in patients with an intraoral malignancy treated with dental implants to support a mandibular denture during ablative surgery before volumetric‐modulated arc therapy (VMAT).Data was collected prospectively from 28 patients treated surgically for an intraoral malignancy, followed by postoperative radiotherapy (VMAT) and analyzed retrospectively. Patients received 2 implants in the native mandible during ablative surgery. Implant‐specific Dmean values were retrieved from the patients' files. Radiographic bone loss was measured 1 year after implant placement and during the last follow‐up appointment. Implant survival was analyzed with the Kaplan–Meier method. Univariate logistic regression and Cox‐regression analyses were performed to investigate the effect of increasing implant‐specific radiation dosages on implant loss.Five out of 56 placed implants were lost during follow‐up (median 36.0 months, IQR 39.0). Radiographically, peri‐implant bone loss occurred in implants with a Dmean > 40 Gy. Implant loss occurred only in implants with a Dmean > 50 Gy.An implant‐specific Dmean higher than 50 Gy is related to more peri‐implant bone loss and, eventually, implant loss. Objectives: To retrospectively assess the treatment outcomes of endosseous implants placed to retain craniofacial prostheses. Material and Methods: Patients with craniofacial defects resulting from congenital disease, trauma, or oncologic treatment had implant retained prostheses placed in the mastoid, orbital, or nasal region and then assessed over a period of up to 30 years. Implant survival rates were calculated with the Kaplan–Meier method. Clinical assessments consisted of scoring skin reactions under the prosthesis and the peri‐implant skin reactions. Possible risk factors for implant loss were identified. Patient satisfaction was evaluated using a 10‐point VAS‐scale. Results: A total of 525 implants placed in 201 patients were included. The median follow up was 71 months (IQR 28–174 months). Implants placed in the mastoid and nasal region showed the highest overall implant survival rates (10‐year implant survival rates of 93.7% and 92.5%, respectively), while the orbital implants had the lowest overall survival rate (84.2%). Radiotherapy was a significant risk factor for implant loss (HR 3.14, p < 0.001). No differences in implant loss were found between pre‐ and post‐operative radiotherapy (p = 0.89). Soft tissue problems were not frequently encountered, and the patients were highly satisfied with their implant‐retained prosthesis. Conclusion: Implants used to retain craniofacial prostheses have high survival and patient satisfaction rates and can thus be considered as a predictable treatment option. Introduction: Aging of the worldwide population has been observed, and postoperative outcomes could be worse in elderly patients. This nationwide study assessed trends in number of surgical resections in octogenarians regarding various major surgical procedures and associated postoperative outcomes. Methods: All patients who underwent surgery between 2014 and 2018 were included from Dutch nationwide quality registries regarding esophageal, stomach, pancreas, colorectal liver metastases, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). For each quality registry, the number of patients who were 80 years or older (octogenarians) was calculated per year. Postoperative outcomes were length of stay (LOS), 30 day major morbidity and 30 day mortality between octogenarians and younger patients. Results: No increase in absolute number and proportion of octogenarians that underwent surgery was observed. Median LOS was higher in octogenarians who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, colorectal liver metastases, lung cancer, pancreatic disease and esophageal cancer. 30 day major morbidity was higher in octogenarians who underwent surgery for colon cancer, esophageal cancer and elective AAA-repair. 30 day mortality was higher in octogenarians who underwent surgery for colorectal cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic disease, esophageal cancer and elective AAA-repair. Median LOS decreased between 2014 and 2018 in octogenarians who underwent surgery for stomach cancer and colorectal cancer. 30 day major morbidity decreased between 2014 and 2018 in octogenarians who underwent surgery for colon cancer. No trends were observed in octogenarians regarding 30 day mortality between 2014 and 2018. Background: Previous studies have focused on patient-related risk factors to explain the higher mortality risk in women undergoing elective abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) repair. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether hospital-related factors influence outcomes following AAA repair in women. Methods: Patients undergoing elective AAA repair in 61 hospitals in the Netherlands were identified from the Dutch Surgical Aneurysm Audit registry (2013-2018). A mixed-effects logistic regression analysis was conducted to assess the effect of sex on inhospital and/or 30-day mortality. This analysis accounted for possible correlation of outcomes among patients who were treated in the same hospital, by adding a hospital-specific random effect to the statistical model. The analysis adjusted for patient-related risk factors and hospital volume of open surgical repair (OSR) and endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Results: Some 12 034 patients were included in the analysis. The mortality rate was higher in women than among men: 53 of 1780 (3.0 per cent) versus 152 of 10 254 (1.5 per cent) respectively. Female sex was significantly associated with mortality after correction for patient- and hospital-related factors (odds ratio 1.68, 95 per cent c.i. 1.20 to 2.37). OSR volume was associated with lower mortality (OR 0.91 (0.85 to 0.95) per 10-procedure increase) whereas no such relationship was identified with EVAR volume (OR 1.03 (1.01 to 1.05) per 10-procedure increase). Childhood immunization coverage rates are known to be disproportionate according to population's socioeconomic status (SES). This systematic review examined and appraised quality of interventions deemed effective to increase routine childhood immunization uptake in low SES populations in developed countries. A literature search was conducted using Medline, Embase, CINAHL, EBMR, PsycInfo, PubMed, and Health STAR. We systematically searched and critically appraised articles published between January 1990 and December 2019 using the Effective Public Health Practice Project Quality Assessment tool. This systematic review provides a synthesis of the available evidence for childhood immunization interventions deemed effective for low SES parents or families of children ≤ 5 years of age. The search yielded 3317 records, of which 2975 studies met the inclusion criteria. From the 100 relevant studies, a total of 40 were included. The majority of effective and strongly rated studies synthesized consisted of multi-component interventions. Such interventions addressed access, community-based mobilization, outreach, appointment reminders, education, clinical tracking and incentives, and were language and health literacy appropriate to support low SES parents. Improving access to low SES parents was deemed effective in the vast majority of strongly rated studies. Incorrect contact information of low SES parents due to increased social mobility (i.e. household moves) rendered reminders ineffective, and therefore, updating contact information should be pursued proactively by front-line healthcare providers. In addition, plain language communication with low SES parents regarding immunization was deemed effective in improving immunization uptake. Comprehensive multi-component interventions including improved access, appointment reminders, education and precision health communication are effective for addressing health inequities in immunization coverage amongst marginalized populations. Summary Background Objectives Methods Results Conclusion Internalized weight bias (IWB) has been identified as a correlate of higher depressive and anxiety symptoms in adolescents with higher weights. However, there has been limited investigation into how IWB relates to positive mental health and whether these associations differ across genders.To examine the associations between IWB and mental health (depression, anxiety, flourishing) in adolescents with higher weights, and to test the potential moderating role of gender.Canadian adolescents with higher weights (N = 7538, 60% boys, 36% girls, 4% gender diverse, ages 12–19) from the COMPASS study completed a survey during the 2021–2022 school year. Data were analysed using generalized linear models.Highest IWB and poorest mental health were noted within gender diverse adolescents, followed by girls then boys. Gender moderated the relationship between higher IWB and higher depression, higher anxiety and lower flourishing, with the strongest relationships noted among girls.IWB interventions should be tailored to gender subgroups that may be particularly vulnerable to maladaptive mental health outcomes associated with IWB. Head and neck cancer treatment can severely alter oral function and aesthetics, and reduce quality of life. The role of maxillofacial prosthodontists in multidisciplinary treatment of head and neck cancer patients is essential when it comes to oral rehabilitation and its planning. This role should preferably start on the day of first intake. Maxillofacial prosthodontists should be involved in the care pathway to shape and outline the prosthetic and dental rehabilitation in line with the reconstructive surgical options. With the progress of three‐dimensional technology, the pretreatment insight in overall prognosis and possibilities of surgical and/or prosthetic rehabilitation has tremendously increased. This increased insight has helped to improve quality of cancer care. This expert review addresses the involvement of maxillofacial prosthodontists in treatment planning, highlighting prosthodontic rehabilitation of head and neck cancer patients from start to finish. Background: Oral cancer patients can benefit from dental implant placement. Traditionally, implants are placed after completing oncologic treatment (secondary implant placement). Implant placement during ablative surgery (primary placement) in oral cancer patients seems beneficial in terms of early start of oral rehabilitation and limiting additional surgical interventions. Guidelines on the ideal timing of implant placement in oral cancer patients are missing. Objective: To perform a scoping literature review on studies examining the timing of dental implant placement in oral cancer patients and propose a clinical practice recommendations guideline. Methods: A literature search for studies dealing with primary and/or secondary implant placement in MEDLINE was conducted (last search December 27, 2019). The primary outcome was 5‐year implant survival. Results: Sixteen out of 808 studies were considered eligible. Both primary and secondary implant placement showed acceptable overall implant survival ratios with a higher pooled 5‐year implant survival rate for primary implant placement 92.8% (95% CI: 87.1%–98.5%) than secondary placed implants (86.4%, 95% CI: 77.0%–95.8%). Primary implant placement is accompanied by earlier prosthetic rehabilitation after tumor surgery. Conclusion: Patients with oral cancer greatly benefit from, preferably primary placed, dental implants in their prosthetic rehabilitation. Background: Little is known about immediate implant placement in head and neck cancer patients. We studied implant survival and functional outcomes of overdentures fabricated on implants placed immediately after removal of the lower dentition during ablative surgery or preceding primary radiotherapy (RT). Methods: Inclusion criteria were primary head and neck cancer, dentate lower jaw, and indication for removal of remaining teeth. Two implants to support a mandibular overdenture were placed immediately after extraction of the dentition during ablative surgery, or prior to starting primary radiotherapy. Standardized questionnaires and clinical assessments were conducted (median follow-up 18.5 months, IQR 13.3). Results: Fifty-eight implants were placed in 29 patients. Four implants were lost (implant survival rate 93.1%). In 9 patients, no functional overdenture could be made. All patients were satisfied with their dentures. Conclusions: Combining dental implant placement with removal of remaining teeth preceding head neck oncology treatment results in a favorable treatment outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this paper is to critique how the promotion of physical activity (PA) is communicated and offer evidence-based alternative framings to encourage PA in youth. We argue that PA promotion messaging should not be tied to outcomes that focus on changing physical appearance, preventing or treating diseases, or sport performance or competition. From a public health perspective, we suggest that PA should instead focus on campaigns, policies, and programs that tie PA to enjoyment, wellbeing, and play. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The implementation of nonanimal approaches is of particular importance to regulatory agencies for the prediction of potential hazards associated with acute exposures to chemicals. This work was carried out in the framework of an international modeling initiative organized by the Acute Toxicity Workgroup (ATWG) of the Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Validation of Alternative Methods (ICCVAM) with the participation of 32 international groups across government, industry, and academia. Our contribution was to develop a multifingerprints similarity approach for predicting five relevant toxicology endpoints related to the acute oral systemic toxicity that are: the median lethal dose (LD50) point prediction, the "nontoxic" (LD50 > 2000 mg/kg) and "very toxic" (LD50<50 mg/kg) binary classification, and the multiclass categorization of chemicals based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency and Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals schemes. Provided by the ICCVAM's ATWG, the training set used to develop the models consisted of 8944 chemicals having high-quality rat acute oral lethality data. The proposed approach integrates the results coming from a similarity search based on 19 different fingerprint definitions to return a consensus prediction value. Moreover, the herein described algorithm is tailored to properly tackling the so-called toxicity cliffs alerting that a large gap in LD50 values exists despite a high structural similarity for a given molecular pair. An external validation set made available by ICCVAM and consisting in 2896 chemicals was employed to further evaluate the selected models. Very little attention has been given to unintended consequences of government reporting on obesity. This paper argues that the 2016 Senate report, “Obesity in Canada: A Whole-Of-Society Approach,” exemplifies the systemic public health issue of weight stigma. The purpose of this viewpoint is to critique the approach taken in the Report, by illustrating that it (1) takes a weight-centric approach to health, (2) does not acknowledge important limitations of the definition and measurement of obesity, (3) reifies obesity as a categorical phenomenon that must be prevented, and (4) uses aggressive framing and disrespectful terminology. The Report perpetuates a focus on the individual, thereby failing to recognize the role that governments can play in reducing weight stigma and addressing social determinants of health. If steps are taken to avoid propagating weight stigma, future reports could more constructively address health promotion, equity, and social determinants of health in their policies. • We analysed the radiation dosages on the teeth for photon and proton therapy. • Intensity modulated proton beam therapy has dosimetric benefits for the dentition. • Treatment with proton therapy can lead to less pre-radiation dental extractions. Intensity modulated proton beam therapy (IMPT) for head and neck cancer offers dosimetric benefits for the organs at risk when compared to photon-based volumetric modulated arch therapy (VMAT). However, limited data exists about the potential benefits of IMPT for tooth-bearing regions. The aim of this study was to compare the IMPT and VMAT radiation dosimetrics of the tooth-bearing regions in head and neck cancer patients. Also, we aimed to identify prognostic factors for a cumulative radiation dose of ≥40 Gy on the tooth-bearing areas, which is considered the threshold dose for prophylactic dental extractions. A total of 121 head and neck cancer patients were included in this retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data. We compared the average Dmean values of IMPT versus VMAT of multiple tooth-bearing regions in the same patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed for receiving a cumulative radiation dose of ≥40 Gy to the tooth-bearing regions (primary endpoint) in both VMAT and IMPT. A lower Dmean was seen after applying IMPT to the tooth-bearing tumour regions (p < 0.001). Regarding VMAT, oral cavity tumours, T3-T4 tumours, molar regions in the mandible, and regions ipsilateral to the tumour were risk factors for receiving a cumulative radiation dose of ≥40 Gy. Weight discrimination is the unjust treatment of individuals because of their weight. There have been very few interventions to address weight discrimination, due in part to the lack of consensus on key messages and strategies. The objective of the third Canadian Weight Bias Summit was to review current evidence and move towards consensus on key weight bias and obesity discrimination reduction messages and strategies. Using a modified brokered dialogue approach, participants, including researchers, health professionals, policy makers and people living with obesity, reviewed the evidence and moved towards consensus on key messages and strategies for future interventions. Participants agreed to these key messages: (1) Weight bias and obesity discrimination should not be tolerated in education, health care and public policy sectors; (2) obesity should be recognized and treated as a chronic disease in health care and policy sectors; and (3) in the education sector, weight and health need to be decoupled. Consensus on future strategies included (1) creating resources to support policy makers, (2) using personal narratives from people living with obesity to engage audiences and communicate anti-discrimination messages and (3) developing a better clinical definition for obesity. Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system in which most patients have serum autoantibodies (called NMO-IgG) that bind to astrocyte water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4). A potential therapeutic strategy in NMO is to block the interaction of NMO-IgG with AQP4. Building on recent observation that some single-point and compound mutations of the AQP4 extracellular loop C prevent NMO-IgG binding, we carried out comparative Molecular Dynamics (MD) investigations on three AQP4 mutants, TP 137-138 AA, N 153 Q and V 150 G, whose 295-ns long trajectories were compared to that of wild type human AQP4. A robust conclusion of our modeling is that loop C mutations affect the conformation of neighboring extracellular loop A, thereby interfering with NMO-IgG binding. Analysis of individual mutations suggested specific hydrogen bonding and other molecular interactions involved in AQP4-IgG binding to AQP4. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the behavior of multiple solid solutions within ternary (BaxCa1-x)B6 and (BaxSr1-x)B6 compounds and demonstrate that nanodomain formation is preferred over uniform solid solutions under certain processing conditions. Instead of the expected single solid solution of M¹ and/or M² atoms within the MB6 phase, we note separation into nanodomain regions rich in either M¹ or M². This phase separation has been observed from detailed analyses of the shapes of the peaks in X-ray diffraction data, where peak splitting and asymmetry are the result of multiple solid solutions with lattice parameters differing by up to 1.4%. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy confirms the presence of these nanodomains, which are about 2-3 nm in size, and reveals varying degrees of lattice misalignment. We also present X-ray diffraction analysis of (BaxCa1-x)B6 powders calcined from 1273 to 1973 K and document the enhancement in sample homogeneity as the separated phases merge into a uniform solid solution. As subsequent calcinations at lower temperatures do not result in a re-separation of phases, the nanodomains are deemed metastable. The greatest degree of phase separation is observed in the (BaxCa1-x)B6 system, which corresponds to the largest difference in cation radii (0.161 vs. 0.134 nm for Ba2+ and Ca2+, respectively). Analysis of the chemical reactions that occur during synthesis suggests that the decomposition of the metal precursors (nitrates and carbonates) to metal oxides may cause selective MB6 phase formation in mixed-cation hexaborides. Designing highly selective human monoamine oxidase (hMAO) inhibitors is a challenging goal on the road to a more effective treatment of depression and anxiety (inhibition of hMAO-A isoform) as well as neurodegenerative diseases (inhibition of hMAO-B isoform). To uncover the molecular rationale of hMAOs selectivity, two recently prepared 2 H -chromene-2-ones, namely compounds 1 and 2 , were herein chosen as molecular probes being highly selective toward hMAO-A and hMAO-B, respectively. We performed molecular dynamics (MD) studies on four different complexes, cross-simulating one at a time the two hMAO-isoforms (dimer embedded in a lipid bilayer) with the two considered probes. Our comparative analysis on the obtained 100 ns trajectories discloses a stable H-bond interaction between 1 and Gln215 as crucial for ligand selectivity toward hMAO-A whereas a water-mediated interaction might explain the observed hMAO-B selectivity of compound 2 . Such hypotheses are further supported by binding free energy calculations carried out applying the molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MM-GBSA) method and allowing us to evaluate the contribution of each residue to the observed isoform selectivity. Taken as whole, this study represents the first attempt to explain at molecular level hMAO isoform selectivity and a valuable yardstick for better addressing the design of new and highly selective MAO inhibitors. We present a theoretical investigation of the effects of substitution of the triphenylamine (TPA) block on the overall properties of materials based on small push–pull molecules designed as donors for organic photovoltaics (OPV). In particular, we exploit modern computational techniques such as density functional theory (DFT), time-dependent DFT, molecular dynamics, and the Marcus theory to analyze the charge and exciton transport properties in crystalline and amorphous phases of four compounds in which one phenyl ring of the TPA block of 2-[(5-{4-[methyl(phenyl)amino]phenyl}thiophen-2-yl)methylene]malononitrile is replaced with a methyl, an α-naphthyl, and a β-naphthyl. Our calculations unveil the molecular rationale behind the different transport properties observed in the experiments. We show that, although the effects of the substituents on the electronic and optical properties are negligible, they have an impact on the molecular packing of the crystalline structure, thus explaining the different macroscopic transport properties (observed and calculated). In particular, the substitution of a phenyl with a methyl favors face-to-face π-π packing in the crystal structure and allows a good π-orbital overlap and high hopping rates. On the other hand, the introduction of an α-naphthyl group generates a steric hindrance that negatively affects the transport properties. Moreover, the investigated substitutions do not significantly influence the degree of local order in the amorphous bulks displaying complete disorder and low hole mobilities. These results, in agreement with the experimental findings, suggest that our computational approach is able to account for the macroscopic effect of subtle transformations of a molecular structure on transport properties and thus can be further employed to obtain valuable insights into the molecular design of optimized active materials for OPV. We evaluated the hypothesis that resistance exercise training performed alone or in combination with aerobic exercise training would increase resting metabolic rate (RMR) relative to aerobic-only and nonexercising control groups. Postpubertal adolescents ( N = 304) aged 14-18 years with obesity (body mass index (BMI) ≥ 95th percentile) or overweight (BMI ≥ 85th percentile + additional diabetes risk factor(s)) were randomized to 4 groups for 22 weeks: Aerobic exercise training, Resistance exercise training, Combined aerobic and resistance exercise training, or Control. All participants received dietary counselling targeting a daily energy deficit of 250 kcal. RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry and body composition by magnetic resonance imaging. There was no significant change in RMR in any group, in spite of significant within-group increases in fat-free mass in the Aerobic, Resistance, and Combined exercise training groups. RMR at baseline and 6 months were Aerobic: 1972 ± 38 and 1990 ± 41; Resistance: 2024 ± 37 and 1992 ± 41; Combined: 2023 ± 38 and 1995 ± 38; Control: 2075 ± 38 and 2073 ± 39 kcal/day ( p > 0.05). There were no between-group differences in RMR after adjustment for total body weight or fat-free mass between groups over time. Per-protocol analyses including only participants with ≥70% adherence, and analyses stratified by sex, also showed no within- or between-group differences in RMR. In conclusion, despite an increase in fat-free mass in all exercise groups, 6 months of aerobic, resistance, or combined training with modest dietary restriction did not increase RMR compared with diet only in adolescents with obesity. Research demonstrates that prediabetes awareness has important implications for participation in diabetes risk-reducing behaviors. We examined the impact of levels of access to health services on prediabetes awareness. In 2016, we conducted an analysis among U.S. adults with prediabetes using cross-sectional data from three cycles (2007-2008, 2009-2010, and 2011-2012) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Participants aware and unaware of their prediabetes were classified as having full, partial, or no access to health services based on current health insurance coverage and having a routine place to go for health care. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the association between access to health services and prediabetes awareness. Among a total sample of 2999U.S. adults with prediabetes, an estimated 92.0% were unaware of their prediabetes status. Participants that were unaware of their prediabetes tended to be younger, male, and were less likely to be obese or have a family history of diabetes. Having no access to health services significantly increased the odds of being prediabetes unaware (AOR: 2.65; 95% CI: 1.10-6.38). However, participants with insurance but no place of regular care had the greatest odds of being prediabetes unaware (AOR: 3.21; 95% CI: 1.21-8.55). These findings suggest that access to health services is a key factor for prediabetes awareness. Health policies and interventions should strive to ensure equitable access to health services in order to detect prediabetes, and promote awareness and engagement in risk-reducing behaviors to decrease the incidence of diabetes. Weight-related issues (including excess weight, disordered eating and body concerns) are often considered as comprising distinct domains of 'obesity' and 'eating disorders'. In this commentary we argue that the concept of weight bias is an important variable when considering wellbeing across the spectrum of weight-related issues. We make the following six points in support of this argument: i) weight bias is common and has adverse health consequences, ii) shaming individuals for their body weight does not motivate positive behaviour change, iii) internalized weight bias is particularly problematic, iv) public health interventions, if not carefully thought out, can perpetuate weight bias, v) weight bias is a manifestation of social inequity, and vi) action on weight bias requires an upstream, population-level approach. To achieve sustainable reductions in weight bias at a population level, substantive modifications and collaborative efforts in multiple settings must be initiated. Among the different aquaporins (AQPs), human aquaporin-4 (hAQP4) has attracted the greatest interest in recent years as a new promising therapeutic target. Such a membrane protein is, in fact, involved in a multiple sclerosis-like immunopathology called Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) and in several disorders resulting from imbalanced water homeostasis such as deafness and cerebral edema. The gap of knowledge in its functioning and dynamics at the atomistic level of detail has hindered the development of rational strategies for designing hAQP4 modulators. The application, lately, of molecular modeling has proved able to fill this gap providing a breeding ground to rationally address compounds targeting hAQP4. In this review, we give an overview of the important advances obtained in this field through the application of Molecular Dynamics (MD) and other complementary modeling techniques. The case studies presented herein are discussed with the aim of providing important clues for computational chemists and biophysicists interested in this field and looking for new challenges. Background: COPD medications reduce exacerbations and improve quality of life. Despite this, some individuals do not receive medications recommended by practice guidelines.Research Question: How common is nonreceipt of recommended medications among people with COPD, and what factors are associated with nonreceipt?Study Design and Methods: This population cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada, a province with universal health care insurance and medication coverage for those aged ≥ 65 years. Health administrative data were used to identify people aged ≥ 66 years with physician-diagnosed COPD as of 2018 and group them into cohorts of lower or higher risk for future COPD exacerbations. Proportions of patients in each group who did not receive medications recommended by COPD guidelines were determined. Generalized estimating equation modeling was used to determine associations between patient and physician factors and nonreceipt of recommended medications.Results: About 54% and 88% of people with COPD received sufficient recommended medications in the low and high risk of exacerbation groups, respectively. Longer duration of COPD, higher comorbidity, dementia, and older physician age were associated with nonreceipt of recommended medications in both groups. People who had a co-diagnosis of asthma, who received care by a pulmonologist and who received spirometry were more likely to receive recommended medication.Interpretation: COPD medications seem underused by the COPD population, and various factors are associated with suboptimal receipt. Background: The Dutch Surgical Aneurysm Audit (DSAA) is a nationwide mandatory quality registry that evaluates the perioperative outcomes of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). The DSAA includes perioperative outcomes that occur up to 30 days, but various complications following AAA repair occur after this period. Administrative healthcare data yield the possibility to evaluate later occuring outcomes such as reinterventions, without increasing the registration burden. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and the potential benefit of administrative healthcare data to evaluate mid-term reinterventions following intact AAA repair.Method: All patients that underwent primary endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) or open surgical repair (OSR) for an intact infrarenal AAA between January 2017 and December 2018 were selected from the DSAA. Subsequently, these patients were identified in a database containing reimbursement data. Healthcare activity codes that refer to reinterventions following AAA repair were examined to assess reinterventions within 12 and 15 months following EVAR and OSR.Results: We selected 4043 patients from the DSAA, and 2059 (51%) patients could be identified in the administrative healthcare database. Reintervention rates of 10.4% following EVAR and 9.5% following OSR within 12 months (p = 0.719), and 11.5% following EVAR and 10.8% following OSR within 15 months (p = 0.785) were reported.Conclusion: Administrative healthcare data as an addition to the DSAA is potentially beneficial to evaluate mid-term reinterventions following intact AAA repair without increasing the registration burden for clinicians. This study tested a family-based human immunodeficiency virus ( HIV)/sexually transmitted infection ( STI) prevention approach integrated within an empirically supported treatment for drug-involved young offenders, Multidimensional Family Therapy ( MDFT). A randomized, controlled, two-site community-based trial was conducted with 154 youth and their parents. Drug-involved adolescents were recruited in detention, randomly assigned to either MDFT or Enhanced Services as Usual ( ESAU), and assessed at intake, 3, 6, 9, 18, 24, 36, and 42-month follow-ups. Youth in both conditions received structured HIV/ STI prevention in detention and those in MDFT also received family-based HIV/ STI prevention as part of ongoing treatment following detention release. Youth in both conditions and sites significantly reduced rates of unprotected sex acts and STI incidence from intake to 9 months. They remained below baseline levels of STI incidence (10%) over the 42-month follow-up period. At Site A, adolescents who were sexually active at intake and received MDFT showed greater reduction in overall frequency of sexual acts and number of unprotected sexual acts than youth in ESAU between intake and 9-month follow-ups. These intervention differences were evident through the 42-month follow-up. Intervention effects were not found for STI incidence or unprotected sex acts at Site B. Intensive group-based and family intervention in detention and following release may reduce sexual risk among substance-involved young offenders, and a family-based approach may enhance effects among those at highest risk. Innovative and coordinated strategies to address weight bias among health professionals are urgently needed. We conducted a systematic literature review of empirical peer-reviewed published studies to assess the impact of interventions designed to reduce weight bias in students or professionals in a health-related field. Combination sets of keywords based on three themes (1: weight bias/stigma; 2: obesity/overweight; 3: health professional) were searched within nine databases. Our search yielded 1447 individual records, of which 17 intervention studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Most studies ( n = 15) included medical, dietetic, health promotion, psychology and kinesiology students, while the minority included practicing health professionals ( n = 2). Studies utilized various bias-reduction strategies. Many studies had methodological weaknesses, including short assessment periods, lack of randomization, lack of control group and small sample sizes. Although many studies reported changes in health professionals' beliefs and knowledge about obesity aetiology, evidence of effectiveness is poor, and long-term effects of intervention strategies on weight bias reduction remain unknown. The findings highlight the lack of experimental research to reduce weight bias among health professionals. Although changes in practice will likely require multiple strategies in various sectors, well-designed trials are needed to test the impact of interventions to decrease weight bias in healthcare settings. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aerobic, resistance, and combined exercise training on cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness in postpubertal adolescents with obesity. After a 4-week supervised moderate-intensity exercise run-in, 304 adolescents aged 14-18 years with body mass index ≥85th percentile were randomized to 4 groups for 22 weeks of aerobic training, resistance training, combined training, or a nonexercising control. All participants received dietary counselling with a maximum daily energy deficit of 250 kcal. Cardiorespiratory fitness (peak oxygen consumption) was measured by indirect calorimetry using a graded treadmill exercise test. Musculoskeletal fitness was measured using the 2003 Canadian Physical Activity Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal tests (hand grip, push-ups, partial curl-ups, sit and reach, and vertical jump). Muscular strength was assessed using an 8-repetition maximum test on the bench press, seated row, and leg press machines. A greater increase in peak oxygen consumption in the aerobic exercise group (30.6 ± 0.6 to 33.4 ± 0.7 mLO2/kg/min) was measured relative to the control group (30.6 ± 0.5 to 30.9 ± 0.7 mLO2/kg/min) ( p = 0.002). Similarly, the number of partial curl-ups increased in the aerobic group (19 ± 1 to 23 ± 1) while no differences were measured in the control group (19 ± 1 to 20 ± 1) ( p = 0.015). Increases in muscular strength and number of push-ups were greatest in the resistance group versus the control and combined groups versus the aerobic group ( p < 0.05). In conclusion, aerobic training had the strongest effect on cardiorespiratory fitness, while resistance and combined training improved both muscular strength and endurance more than control and aerobic training alone, respectively, in adolescents with obesity. Objective: To determine the effects of aerobic training, resistance training, and combined training on mood, body image, and self-esteem in adolescents with obesity. Method: After a 4-week prerandomization treatment, 304 postpubertal adolescents (91 males, 213 females) with obesity ages 14-18 years were randomized to 1 of 4 groups for 22 weeks: aerobic training (n = 75), resistance training (n = 78), combined aerobic and resistance training (n = 75), or nonexercising control (n = 76). All participants received dietary counseling, with a daily energy deficit of 250 kcal. Mood was measured using the Brunei Mood Scale. Body image was assessed using the Multiple Body Self-Relations Questionnaire, and physical self-perceptions and global self-esteem were measured using the Harter Physical Self-Perceptions Questionnaire. Results: Median adherence was 62%, 56%, and 64% in aerobic, resistance, and combined training, respectively. Resistance and combined training produced greater improvements than control on vigor, and resistance training reduced depressive symptoms. All groups improved on body image and physical self-perceptions, but combined showed greater increases than control on perceived physical conditioning, while only resistance training showed greater increases than controls on global self-esteem. Both combined and resistance training demonstrated greater increases in perceived strength than control. Psychological benefits were more related to better adherence and reductions in body fat than changes in strength or fitness. Conclusion: Resistance training, alone or in combination with aerobic training, may provide psychological benefits in adolescents with overweight or obesity, and therefore could be an alternative to aerobic training for some individuals in the biological and psychological management of adolescent obesity. Background: Many individuals with eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa (AN), engage in overexercise. Little is known about fitness professionals' perceptions of their responsibilities when interacting with clients with possible AN. The purpose of the current study was to examine Alberta fitness professionals' experiences with clients suspected of having AN, and their views on related ethical issues. Specifically, we aimed to examine (1) their experiences with fitness clients suspected of having AN; (2) their opinions about related ethical responsibilities of fitness professionals; and (3) their views on related training and ethical issues. Methods: We administered a 21-item online survey to 143 Canadian fitness professionals about their experiences and perspectives on encountering individuals with possible AN in exercise classes and at their exercise facilities. Results: Sixty-two percent of respondents had encountered a client they believed had AN. Three-quarters had never received any training on managing clients with AN and felt inadequately prepared for such situations. Although most felt ethically obliged to intervene with such a client, more than two-thirds reported no relevant guidelines in their professional training. Conclusions: Many fitness professionals are faced with clients with possible AN, have the desire to help, feel ethically obligated to take action, but do not know what course of action to take, if any. Organicthin film transistors (OTFTs) are multilayer field-effect transistorsthat employ an organic conjugated material as semiconductor. Severalexperimental groups have recently demonstrated that the insertionof an organic self-assembled monolayer (SAM) between the dielectricand the semiconductive layer is responsible for a sensible improvementof the OTFT performances in terms of an increased charge carrier mobilitycaused by a higher degree of order in the organic semiconductor layer.Here, we describe a combined periodic density functional theory (DFT)and classical molecular dynamics (MD) protocol applied to four differentSAMs and a pentacene monolayer deposited onto their surfaces. In particular,we investigate the morphology and the surface of the four SAMs andthe translational, orientational, and nematic order of the monolayerthrough the calculation of several distribution functions and orderparameters pointing out the differences among the systems and relatingthem to known experimental results. Our calculations also suggestthat small differences in the SAM molecular design will produce remarkabledifferences in the SAM surface and monolayer order. In particular,our simulations explain how a SAM with a bulky terminal group resultsin an irregular and rough surface that determines the deposition ofa disordered semiconductive monolayer. On the contrary, SAMs witha small terminal group generate smooth surfaces with uninterruptedperiodicity, thus favoring the formation of an ordered pentacene monolayerthat increases the mobility of charge carriers and improves the overallperformances of the OTFT devices. Objectives: To investigate the effects of aerobic training, resistance training, or both on abdominal subcutaneous fat (subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT)) (deep and superficial), visceral fat (visceral adipose tissue (VAT)), apolipoproteins A-1 and B (ApoA-1, ApoB), ApoB/ApoA-1 ratio and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (HSCRP) in post-pubertal adolescents with obesity.Participants: After a 4-week supervised moderate-intensity exercise run-in period, 304 postpubertal adolescents with overweight (body mass index (BMI) ⩾85th percentile for age and sex+diabetes risk factor) or obesity (⩾95th BMI percentile) aged 14-18 years were randomized to four groups for 22 weeks (5 months): aerobic training, resistance training, combined training or a non-exercising control.Methods: This study used a randomized controlled design. All groups received dietary counseling designed to promote healthy eating with a maximum daily energy deficit of 250 kcal. Abdominal fat (SAT and VAT) at the level of the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebrae (L4-L5) was measured by magnetic resonance imaging and ApoA-1, ApoB and HSCRP were measured after a 12-h fast at baseline and after 6 months.Results: Changes in SAT at L4-L5 were -16.2 cm(2) in aerobic (P=0.04 vs control), -22.7 cm(2) in resistance (P=0.009 vs control) and -18.7 cm(2) in combined (P=0.02 vs control). Combined training reduced ApoB levels from 0.81±0.02 to 0.78±0.02 g l(-1) (P=0.04 vs control) and ApoB/ApoA-1 ratio from 0.67±0.02 to 0.64±0.02 (P=0.02 vs control and P=0.04 vs aerobic). There were no significant differences in VAT, ApoA-1 or HSCRP levels between groups.Conclusions: Aerobic and resistance training and their combination decreased abdominal SAT in adolescents with obesity. Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a multiple sclerosis-like immunopathology disease affecting optic nerves and the spinal cord. Its pathological hallmark is the deposition of a typical immunoglobulin, called NMO-IgG, against the water channel Aquaporin-4 (AQP4). Preventing NMO-IgG binding would represent a valuable molecular strategy for a focused NMO therapy. The recent observation that aspartate in position 69 (D69) is determinant for the formation of NMO-IgG epitopes prompted us to carry out intensive Molecular Dynamics (MD) studies on a number of single-point AQP4 mutants. Here, we report a domino effect originating from the point mutation at position 69: we find that the side chain of T62 is reoriented far from its expected position leaning on the lumen of the pore. More importantly, the strength of the H-bond interaction between L53 and T56, at the basis of the loop A, is substantially weakened. These events represent important pieces of a clear-cut mechanistic rationale behind the failure of the NMO-IgG binding, while the water channel function as well as the propensity to aggregate into OAPs remains unaltered. The molecular interaction fields (MIF)-based analysis of cavities complemented MD findings indicating a putative binding site comprising the same residues determining epitope reorganization. In this respect, docking studies unveiled an intriguing perspective to address the future design of small drug-like compounds against NMO. In agreement with recent experimental observations, the present study is the first computational attempt to elucidate NMO-IgG binding at the molecular level, as well as a first effort toward a less elusive AQP4 druggability. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) is the predominant water channel in different organs and tissues. An alteration of its physiological functioning is responsible for several disorders of water regulation and, thus, is considered an attractive target with a promising therapeutic and diagnostic potential. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations performed on the AQP4 tetramer embedded in a bilayer of lipid molecules allowed us to analyze the role of spontaneous fluctuations occurring inside the pore. Following the approach by Hashido et al. [Hashido M, Kidera A, Ikeguchi M (2007) Biophys J 93: 373–385], our analysis on 200 ns trajectory discloses three domains inside the pore as key elements for water permeation. Herein, we describe the gating mechanism associated with the well-known selectivity filter on the extracellular side of the pore and the crucial regulation ensured by the NPA motifs (asparagine, proline, alanine). Notably, on the cytoplasmic side, we find a putative gate formed by two residues, namely, a cysteine belonging to the loop D (C178) and a histidine from loop B (H95). We observed that the spontaneous reorientation of the imidazole ring of H95 acts as a molecular switch enabling H-bond interaction with C178. The occurrence of such local interaction seems to be responsible for the narrowing of the pore and thus of a remarkable decrease in water flux rate. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental observations and may represent a promising starting point to pave the way for the discovery of chemical modulators of AQP4 water permeability. Abstract: Zirconia-based inert matrix fuels reinforced by ZrC were synthesized via spark plasma sintering (SPS). Composites with full density were obtained. In order to prevent the oxidation introduced by dispersed ZrC in the bulk composite, SiC and ZrB2 were later added into the composite and their capability to improve oxidation resistance was examined. SiC was found to form an oxidation layer which could enhance the oxidation resistance. In addition, micro hardness was improved attributing to effective sintering facilitated by silica flow and distribution of ZrC. With an optimum sintering condition and the addition of SiC, thermal conductivity was improved at higher temperature with the help of unoxidized ZrC reinforcement in the bulk composite. Physical activity (PA) interventions targeting overweight and obese children and adolescents have shown only modest success, and dropout is an area of concern. Proper design and implementation of a PA intervention is critical for maximizing adherence and thus increasing the overall health benefits from PA participation. We propose practical advice based on our collective clinical trial experience with support from the literature on best practices related to PA interventions in overweight and obese children and adolescents. The top 10 lessons learned are ( i) PA setting-context is important; ( ii) choice of fitness trainer matters; ( iii) physical activities should be varied and fun; ( iv) the role of the parent-guardian should be considered; ( v) individual physical and psychosocial characteristics should be accounted for; ( vi) realistic goals should be set; ( vii) regular reminders should be offered; ( viii) a multidisciplinary approach should be taken; ( ix) barriers should be identified early and a plan to overcome them developed; and ( x) the right message should be communicated: specifically, what's in it for them? The recommendations in this paper can be used in other pediatric PA programs, physical education settings, and public health programs, with the hope of decreasing attrition and increasing the benefits of PA participation to promote health in children and adolescents. Abstract: Purpose: The objective of the Healthy Eating Aerobic and Resistance Training in Youth (HEARTY) trial (ClinicalTrials.Gov # NCT00195858) was to examine the effects of resistance training, with and without aerobic training, on percent body fat in sedentary, post-pubertal overweight or obese adolescents aged 14–18years. This paper describes the HEARTY study rationale, design and methods. Methods: After a 4-week supervised low-intensity exercise run-in period, 304 overweight or obese adolescents with a body mass index≥85th percentile for age and sex were randomized to 4 groups for 22weeks (5months): diet+aerobic exercise, diet+resistance exercise, diet+combined aerobic and resistance exercise, or a diet only waiting-list control. All participants received dietary counseling designed to promote healthy eating with a maximum daily energy deficit of −250kcal. Outcomes: The primary outcome is percent body fat measured by Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Secondary outcomes include changes in anthropometry, regional body composition, resting energy expenditure, cardiorespiratory fitness, musculoskeletal fitness, cardiometabolic risk markers, and psychological health. Summary: To our knowledge, HEARTY is the largest clinical trial examining effects of aerobic training, resistance training, and combined aerobic and resistance training on changes in adiposity and cardiometabolic risk markers in overweight and obese adolescents. The findings will have important clinical implications regarding the role that resistance training should play in the management of adolescent obesity and its co-morbidities. More than 1,300 Canadians are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually, which is nearly preventable through human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization. Across Canada, coverage rates remain below the 90% target set out by the Action Plan for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer in Canada (2020–2030). To support this Plan, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer has commissioned the Urban Public Health Network (UPHN) to coordinate a quality improvement project with Canada's school-based HPV immunization programs. In Alberta, the UPHN partnered with Alberta Health Services (AHS) for this work. This study has one overarching research question: what are parent/guardian and program stakeholder perceived barriers, enablers and opportunities to immunization for youth as part of the school-based HPV immunization program in Alberta? This study uses a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design. A survey will be emailed to a sample of Albertans with children aged 11–17 years. Questions will be based on a Conceptual Framework of Access to Health Care. Subsequent qualitative work will explore the survey's findings. Parents/guardians identifying as vaccine hesitant in the survey will be invited to participate in virtual, semi-structured, in-depth interviews. Stakeholders of the school-based immunization program will be purposively sampled from AHS' five health zones for virtual focus groups. Quantitative data will be analyzed using SAS Studio 3.6 to carry out descriptive statistics and, using logistic regression, investigate if Framework constructs are associated with parents'/guardians' decision to immunize their children. Qualitative data will be analyzed using NVivo 12 to conduct template thematic analysis guided by the Framework. Study results will provide insights for Alberta's public health practitioners to make evidence-informed decisions when tailoring the school-based HPV immunization program to increase uptake in vaccine hesitant populations. Findings will contribute to the national study, which will culminate in recommendations to increase HPV immunization uptake nationally and progress towards the 90% coverage target. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of age (≤65 years or >65 years) and androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT, presence or absence) as factors that may predict changes in body composition and fitness following a 24-week exercise program in prostate cancer patients. Methods: One hundred twenty-one men were randomly allocated to either: (1) aerobic exercise (AE), (2) resistance exercise (RE), or (3) usual care (UC). Body composition was assessed by DXA. Aerobic fitness was assessed through a maximal treadmill test. Muscular strength was assessed by leg extension and bench press using the eight-repetition maximum test. Responses were compared between younger (≤65 years) and older (>65 years) patients with or without ADT. Results: There did not appear to be an interaction between age and ADT on body composition or fitness, nor were there any significant changes in body composition for participants ≤65 years. In participants aged >65 years, lean mass decreased in AE ( p = 0.013) and UC ( p = 0.006), but was preserved in RE. In participants receiving ADT, there was a decrease in lean mass in AE ( p = 0.003) and UC ( p < 0.001) but not in RE. The non-ADT group did not show any changes in body composition but did show improvements in muscular fitness following resistance training ( p < 0.001). Conclusion: Changes in body composition and physical fitness following a 24-week exercise program in men with prostate cancer are not influenced by age and/or ADT. Resistance training appears to attenuate the age-related decrease in lean mass and increase in body fat in older patients with prostate cancer and those receiving ADT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: White opacities and pits are developmental defects in enamel caused by high intake of fluoride (F) during amelogenesis. We tested the hypothesis that these enamel pits develop at locations where F induces the formation of sub-ameloblastic cysts. We followed the fate of these cysts during molar development over time. Mandibles from hamster pups injected with 20mg NaF/kg at postnatal day 4 were excised from 1h after injection till shortly after tooth eruption, 8 days later. Tissues were histologically processed and cysts located and measured. Cysts were formed at early secretory stage and transitional stage of amelogenesis and detected as early 1h after injection. The number of cysts increased from 1 to almost 4 per molar during the first 16h post-injection. The size of the cysts was about the same, i.e., 0.46±0.29×106 μm3 at 2h and 0.50±0.35×107 μm3 at 16h post-injection. By detachment of the ameloblasts the forming enamel surface below the cyst was cell-free for the first 16h post-injection. With time new ameloblasts repopulated and covered the enamel surface in the cystic area. Three days after injection all cysts had disappeared and the integrity of the ameloblastic layer restored. After eruption, white opaque areas with intact enamel surface were found occlusally at similar anatomical locations as late secretory stage cysts were seen pre-eruptively. We conclude that at this moderate F dose, the opaque sub-surface defects with intact surface enamel (white spots) are the consequence of the fluoride-induced cystic lesions formed earlier under the late secretory–transitional stage ameloblasts. The article examines one study which determines the effects of aerobic exercise training and resistance exercise training on resting metabolic rate (RMR) in individuals who are previously sedentary and with type 2 diabetes. The effects of combined aerobic and resistance exercise training on the group's RMR are also investigated. 103 participants comprising of 72 male and 31 female were asked to undergo aerobic training, resistance training, combined aerobic and resistance exercise training three times per week for consecutive 22 weeks. Each group's RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry. Data analysis revealed that RMR and any form of exercises have no correlation with each other.

The advent of fully polarimetric systems has led to an increased amount of information acquired by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors but also to an increased complexity of the data to be analysed and interpreted. In particular, the choice of several representations of the data, in terms of different parameters with peculiar characteristics and physical meaning, has been offered. With this work, we intend to address their systematic investigation with a twofold goal: (1) to provide a brief review of the polarimetric representations under consideration; and (2) to characterize and compare them with respect to their usefulness for classification purposes. The analysis procedure consists of the accuracy estimation of classification tests performed on different parameters derived from L-band polarimetric SAR data. In order to ensure a common basis for their comparison, a neural network classifier, the Multi-Layer Perceptron trained by the Back-Propagation learning rule, was used which permits us to operate on the data without making any a priori assumption on their statistics. In this way, the considered polarimetric parameters, in general characterized by different statistical distributions, may undergo the same classification process and the results compared. Our results indicate that the overall classification performance varies depending on the polarimetric parameters used. However, these variations are relatively limited and do not permit us, at this stage, to define an 'absolute' best representation to identify the classes under investigation in an optimal way. Classification of the Earth's surface constitutes an important application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data; in turn, it may represent an efficient way for investigating their different representations. The polarimetric parameters most frequently taken into account for classification have been the incoherent ones. A similar use of coherent methods appears to have been scarcely considered and remained neglected. In this contribution, we wish to address this issue, testing and comparing a wide range of polarimetric SAR parameters, coherent and incoherent. Another original aspect of this work is the study of the dependence of the classification results on the varying size of averaging windows of pixels. Such an analysis will permit us to evaluate the importance of speckle reduction and to prove if the chosen polarimetric parameters describe only point-like physical properties of the targets or if they also contain 'extended', local information. The goal is to provide an objective estimate of the quality of the classification of polarimetric parameters and afford their comparison, an exercise hitherto unavailable in the literature in common knowledge. Volume decorrelation is an aspect of synthetic aperture radar interferometry that is currently at stake. It stems from the distribution in height of the backscattering cross section in a imaged scene, and it widely affects interferometric coherence images, e.g., in the presence of forests or buildings. The interest in its reduction lies on the fact that "resolving" volume decorrelation and fixing the exact position of the scattering centers in a resolution cell may lead to an estimation of the height of the observed distributed scatterers. Indeed, the determination of the volume scattering contribution is determinant in digital elevation model generation as well as in biomass estimation. However, volume decorrelation itself may be a source of information on the mechanisms that originate it. In this paper, a distinction is made between the behavior of volume decorrelation due to random volumes and stationary distributed targets. The two cases are then studied by means of polarimetry: the response of such targets to different polarizations is considered by applying a series of decompositions of the scattering matrix, and a systematic analysis of the interferometric coherence characteristics is reported. Background. Although previous studies have reported weight bias among students and professionals in exercise science, physical education, kinesiology, and fitness instruction, predictors of weight bias in these professions have not been extensively reviewed. Aim. The purpose of this scoping review was to explore the available literature on predictors of weight bias in exercise science students and fitness professionals to identify key concepts and research gaps. Methods. PubMed and ERIC were searched from January 1990 to May 2019. Eighteen studies were included in this review. A thematic analysis was conducted. Findings. Six main themes were drawn from these studies including beliefs in the personal controllability of weight; sex differences; enrollment in a health sciences-related program; psychosocial and personal factors; knowledge of obesity; lack of personal history, family, or friend with obesity. Our scoping review highlighted diverse predictors of weight bias among exercise science students and professionals that warrant further study and intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this continuing work, we have updated our recently proposed Multi-fingerprint Similarity Search algorithm (MuSSel) by enabling the generation of dominant ionized species at a physiological pH and the exploration of a larger data domain, which included more than half a million high-quality small molecules extracted from the latest release of ChEMBL (version 24.1, at the time of writing). Provided with a high biological assay confidence score, these selected compounds explored up to 2822 protein drug targets. To improve the data accuracy, samples marked as prodrugs or with equivocal biological annotations were not considered. Notably, MuSSel performances were overall improved by using an object-relational database management system based on PostgreSQL. In order to challenge the real effectiveness of MuSSel in predicting relevant therapeutic drug targets, we analyzed a pool of 36 external bioactive compounds published in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry from October to December 2018. This study demonstrates that the use of highly curated chemical and biological experimental data on one side, and a powerful multi-fingerprint search algorithm on the other, can be of the utmost importance in addressing the fate of newly conceived small molecules, by strongly reducing the attrition of early phases of drug discovery programs.
