20. Bacterial adhesion inhibition on water treatment membrane by a modified HHC-36 antimicrobial peptide.

Abstract

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are now used instead of conventional antimicrobial substances because they do not induce resistance in microbial cells. The first goal of this study was to investigate how various dissolution solvents, such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and autoclaved deionized (DI) water, affect the antimicrobial potency of an AMP (HHC-36) modified with L -propargylglycine (PraAMP) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus sp. The potential application of HHC-36 AMP as a biofouling control agent on water treatment membranes was then investigated using a membrane fouling bacterium as a model. At concentrations greater than 0.5 mg/mL, the AMP demonstrated significant antibacterial efficacy against all the bacteria species. However, the initial dissolution of the HHC-36 AMP in DMSO had a significant impact on its antibacterial effects. DMSO alone (= 12.4% vol/vol) exhibited a significant bacterial growth inhibition. This finding is noteworthy because DMSO is commonly used as a solvent for antimicrobial agents that are insoluble in water. Overall, by disrupting bacterial cell membranes, the HHC-36 AMP was able to inactivate bacterial cells on water treatment membrane. Abstract

High-energy consumption is a critical issue associated with seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination, although the SWRO has been regarded as one of the most energy-efficient processes for seawater desalination. This means that SWRO involves a larger amount of fossil fuel and other energy sources for water production, which imposes a negative impact on the environment such as greenhouse gas emission. Therefore, the high-energy consumption of SWRO should be addressed to minimize environmental impacts and to allow for sustainable exploitation of seawater. However, the recent trend of energy consumption in SWRO seems to have reached a saturation point, which is still higher than theoretical minimum energy. To find new and innovative strategies for lowering current energy consumption, a comprehensive understanding of energy use in SWRO plants from theoretical analysis to actual energy consumption in real SWRO plants is required. This book can provide readers with information about the current state of energy consumption in actual SWRO plants, the fundamental understanding of energy use of SWRO plants from theoretical point of view, and advanced technologies and processes that could be applied for future energy reduction. In addition, this book will offer a detailed methodology for analyzing energy issues in seawater desalination. Through this book, readers will obtain an insight into how to deal with and analyze the energy issues in SWRO desalination.

Abstract

Membrane technologies are playing an ever-important role in the field of water treatment since water reuse and desalination were put in place as alternative water resources to alleviate the global water crisis. Recently, membranes are becoming more versatile and powerful with upgraded electroconductive capabilities, owing to the development of novel materials (e.g., carbon nanotubes and graphene) with dual properties for assembling into membranes and exerting electrochemical activities. Novel nanomaterial-based electrically responsive membranes have been employed with promising results for mitigating membrane fouling, enhancing membrane separation performance and self-cleaning ability, controlling membrane wettability, etc. In this article, recent progress in novel-nanomaterial-based electrically responsive membranes for application in the field of water purification are provided.
