Abstract Povidone-iodine is identified as one of the widely applicable antiseptic reagents for treatment of skin infection and wound healing. Controllable releasing of povidone-iodine is extensively required for healing of chronic wounds. The release of povidone-iodine was systematically studied from the composites based on carboxymethyl starch (CMS). Currently, different ratios from copper precursor and L-aspartic acid (L-AA) were interacted with CMS to obtain Cu-L-AA@CMS composites. Increment the percentage of L-AA was reflected in clustering of dense masses from the desirable composite with highly crystalline/stable structural network. Regardless to pH conditions, Cu-L-AA(30%)@CMS composite showed the highest efficiency for controllable release of povidone-iodine, whereas, the release percentages were estimated to be 58%, 32% and 18% at pH 5, 7 and 9, respectively. The kinetic results revealed the impossibility of povidone-iodine releasing via diffusion/erosion for further support of the hypothesis of releasing via swelling process. Moreover, the release of povidone-iodine using column technique showed that the lowest release was estimated at using high rate of 6 mL/min. Besides the biocompatibility and biodegradability of the prepared Cu-L-AA@CMS composites, it showed the superiority for controllable release of povidone-iodine antiseptic reagent to regulate its beneficial effect in curing of the skin.

Abstract Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) actuators have garnered significant scientific attention in robotics and artificial muscles for their ability to operate at low voltage, high strain capacity, and lightweight construction. The lack of uniform bending in IPMC actuators undermines their control precision and restricts their range of potential applications. This study utilized the unique properties of nanoscale materials and Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to develop a membrane for soft robotic bending actuation. Subsequently, a platinum coating was applied to the membrane to mitigate the limitations of IPMCs in soft robotics applications. Herein, mechanized agitation was employed during the solution-casting process to enhance platinum metal (Pt-metal) coating on zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures within a PVA- sulphonated graphene oxide nanocomposite, achieving enhanced soft robotics bending actuation capabilities. The resultant membrane composed of sulphonated-graphene oxide and polyvinyl-zinc oxide coated with pt (PsGZ-Pt) was examined by exploring advanced analytical techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD). Furthermore, the ionic exchange capacity (IEC), proton conductivity (PC), water uptake and water loss characteristics were evaluated to be 2.1 meq. g−1, 1.95 × 10−3 Scm−1, 59.62% at 45 °C and water loss at 9 min immersion found 38%, respectively. Electromechanical studies of the PsGZ-Pt membrane (size 30 mm length, 10 mm width, 0.07 mm thickness) showed an actuation force of 0.3253 mN and a displacement of roughly 22.8 mm at ± 3 VDC. These findings highlighted the PsGZ-Pt membrane’s potential as a low-cost alternative to expensive commercial IPMC actuators based on polymers. These results presented a straightforward, low-cost approach for synthesizing PsGZ-Pt utilizing conventional technologies. The PsGZ-Pt membrane shows promise for generating low-cost, high-performance actuation materials with a wide range of industrial applications.

Background: Several investigations suggested correlation between microscopic colitis (MC) and celiac disease (CD). This study aimed to examine this relationship using large-sized, population-based data with adequate control for confounding factors. Methods: This study employed the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database over 4 years (2016–2019). Patients with/without MC in the presence/absence of CD were identified through ICD-10 codes. Univariate and multi-variate analyses involving odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were performed. Results: Overall, 26,836,118 patients were analyzed. Of whom, 6,836 patients had MC (n = 179 with CD and n = 6,657 without CD). The mean hospital stay was not significantly different between both groups (5.42 ± 5.44 days vs. 4.95 ± 4.66 days, P = 0.202). The univariate analysis revealed a significant association between MC and CD (OR = 22.69, 95% [19.55, 26.33], P < 0.0001). In the multi-variate analysis, which adjusted for potential confounders including age, race, hospital region, hospital teaching status, ZIP income, smoking status, alcohol overuse, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, lipidemia-related disorders, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, and selected auto-immune diseases, the association remained significant (OR = 15.71, 95% CI [13.52, 18.25], P < 0.0001). Moreover, in patients with MC, the presence of CD emerged as a significant, independent variable of in-hospital mortality in univariate (OR = 2.87, 95% [1.14, 7.21], P = 0.025) and multi-variate (OR = 3.37, 95% CI [1.32, 8.60], P = 0.011) analyses. Conclusion: This study establishes a probable link between MC and CD, backed by both univariate and multi-variate analyses, while also identifying CD as an independent risk factor for increased mortality among MC patients. These findings need to be validated in real-world clinical studies.

After a comprehensive taxonomic assessment of descriptions/ illustrations of all known (118) species of the spider mite genus Schizotetranychus Trägårdh (Acari: Prostigmata: Tetranychidae), five species groups are proposed based on the number of tactile setae on tibia II in female, i.e., vermiculatus with four setae (four spp.), schizopus with five setae (52 spp.), spireafolia with six setae (10 spp.), asparagi with seven setae (20 spp.), and bambusae with eight setae on tibia II (22 spp.). The species group schizopus is further divided into three species subgroups based on tactile setae on tibia I: schizopus with eight/ nine setae (21 spp.), andropogoni with seven setae (26 spp.), and taquarae with six tactile setae excluding the solenidion on tibia I (five spp.). Eight Schizotetranychus species were not assigned to any species group because of brief descriptions and/ or illustration and without information on the number of tactile setae on tibiae I and II. Moreover, two Schizotetranychus species, S. gausus Baker & Pritchard and S. luculentus Tseng that have six setae/ structures including a spinneret and a solenidion on the palp tarsus, are provisionally transferred to the genus Stigmaeopsis Banks. Finally, keys to species groups and subgroups of the world species of Schizotetranychus are provided.

The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a globally cultivated leguminous crop. Fusarium wilt (FW), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli (Fop), is a significant disease leading to substantial yield loss in common beans. Disease-resistant cultivars are recommended to counteract this. The objective of this investigation was to identify single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers associated with FW resistance and to pinpoint potential resistant common bean accessions within a core collection, utilizing a panel of 157 accessions through the Genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach with TASSEL 5 and GAPIT 3. Phenotypes for Fop race 1 and race 4 were matched with genotypic data from 4740 SNPs of BARCBean6K_3 Infinium Bea Chips. After ranking the 157-accession panel and revealing 21 Fusarium wilt-resistant accessions, the GWAS pinpointed 16 SNPs on chromosomes Pv04, Pv05, Pv07, Pv8, and Pv09 linked to Fop race 1 resistance, 23 SNPs on chromosomes Pv03, Pv04, Pv05, Pv07, Pv09, Pv10, and Pv11 associated with Fop race 4 resistance, and 7 SNPs on chromosomes Pv04 and Pv09 correlated with both Fop race 1 and race 4 resistances. Furthermore, within a 30 kb flanking region of these associated SNPs, a total of 17 candidate genes were identified. Some of these genes were annotated as classical disease resistance protein/enzymes, including NB-ARC domain proteins, Leucine-rich repeat protein kinase family proteins, zinc finger family proteins, P-loopcontaining nucleoside triphosphate hydrolase superfamily, etc. Genomic prediction (GP) accuracy for Fop race resistances ranged from 0.26 to 0.55. This study advanced common bean genetic enhancement through marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection (GS) strategies, paving the way for improved Fop resistance.

Abstract The fourth energy revolution is characterized by the incorporation of renewable energy supplies into intelligent networks. As the world is shifting towards cleaner energy sources, there is a need for efficient and reliable methods to predict the output of renewable energy plants. Hybrid machine learning modified models are emerging as a promising solution for energy generation prediction. Renewable energy generation plants, such as solar, biogas, hydropower plants, wind farms, etc. are becoming increasingly popular due to their environmental benefits. However, their output can be highly variable and dependent on weather conditions, making integrating them into the existing energy grid challenging. Smart grids with artificial intelligent systems have the potential to solve this challenge by using real-time data to optimize energy production and distribution. Although by incorporating sensors, analytics, and automation, these grids can manage energy demand and supply more efficiently, reducing carbon emissions, increase energy security, and improve access to electricity in remote areas. However, this research aims to enhance the efficiency of solar power generation systems in a smart grid context using machine learning hybrid models such as Hybrid Convolutional-Recurrence Net (HCRN), Hybrid Convolutional-LSTM Net (HCLN), and Hybrid Convolutional-GRU Net (HCGRN). For this purpose, this study considers various parameters of a solar plant such as power production (MWh), irradiance or plane of array (POA), and performance ratio (PR). The HCLN model demonstrates superior accuracy with the RMSE values of 0.012027 for MWh, 0.013734 for POA and 0.003055 for PR, along with the lowest MAE values of 0.069523 for MWh, 0.082813 for POA, and 0.042815 for PR. The obtained results suggest that the proposed machine learning models can effectively enhance the efficiency of solar power generation systems by accurately predicting the required measurements.

This retrospective study, conducted at King Saud University Family Medicine Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aimed to investigate the impact of having a regular primary care provider on clinical outcomes and preventive service delivery for patients with diabetes and/or hypertension.Methods: The study, spanning 2017 to 2019, included 400 patients diagnosed with diabetes and/or hypertension for at least six months before the 6-month pre-attachment period to regular family medicine physicians in 2018. Data before and after attachment for at least six months were compared using electronic health records.Results: The mean age of the patients was 60.9, with a predominant female representation (66.8%) and 90.7% Saudis. Results indicated a significant improvement in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (p = 0.005) and systolic blood pressure (p = 0.014) post-attachment. Preventive service delivery saw notable enhancements, with increased colon cancer screening (p = 0.03), breast cancer screening (p < 0.001), and retinal screening (p < 0.001) post-attachment.Conclusion: This study’s findings underscore the importance of continuity of care in chronic disease management and provide valuable and promising insights into the Saudi healthcare context, aligning with the Saudi Ministry of Health’s vision for universal access to regular primary care providers.Keywords: continuity of patient care, primary health care, diabetes mellitus, essential hypertension, healthcare quality

Mangrove vegetation, a threatened and unique inter-tidal ecosystem, harbours a complex and largely unexplored bacterial community crucial for nutrient cycling and the degradation of toxic pollutants in coastal areas. Despite its importance, the bacterial community composition of the gray mangrove (Avicennia marina) in the Red Sea coastal regions remains under-studied. This study aims to elucidate the structural and functional diversity of the microbiome in the bulk and rhizospheric soils associated with A. marina in the coastal areas of Ras Alshabaan-Umluj (Umluj) and Almunibrah-Al-Wajh (Al-Wajh) within the Tabuk region of Saudi Arabia. Amplicon sequencing targeting the 16S rRNA was performed using the metagenomic DNAs from the bulk and rhizospheric soil samples from Umluj and Al-Wajh. A total of 6,876 OTUs were recovered from all samples, of which 1,857 OTUs were common to all locations while the total number of OTUs unique to Al-wajh was higher (3,011 OTUs) than the total number of OTUs observed (1,324 OTUs) at Umluj site. Based on diversity indices, overall bacterial diversity was comparatively higher in rhizospheric soil samples of both sites. Comparing the diversity indices for the rhizosphere samples from the two sites revealed that the diversity was much higher in the rhizosphere samples from Al-Wajh as compared to those from Umluj. The most dominant genera in rhizosphere sample of Al-Wajh were Geminicoccus and Thermodesulfovibrio while the same habitat of the Umluj site was dominated by Propionibacterium, Corynebacterium and Staphylococcus. Bacterial functional potential prediction analyses showed that bacteria from two locations have almost similar patterns of functional genes including amino acids and carbohydrates metabolisms, sulfate reduction and C-1 compound metabolism and xenobiotics biodegradation. However, the rhizosphere samples of both sites harbour more genes involved in the utilization and assimilation of C-1 compounds. Our results reveal that bacterial communities inhabiting the rhizosphere of A. marina differed significantly from those in the bulk soil, suggesting a possible role of A. marina roots in shaping these bacterial communities. Additionally, not only vegetation but also geographical location appears to influence the overall bacterial composition at the two sites.

Diethyl 2-(((4-methyl-2-oxo-2H-chromen-7-yl)oxy)methylene)malonate (2) was synthesized from coumarin 1 and diethyl ethoxymethylene malonate in ethanol, followed by cyclization in diphenyl ether to give chromene-9-carboxylate (3). Sugar hydrazones 5a-c were formed by reacting hydrazide 4 with D-galactose, D-mannose, and D-xylose, then acetylated to per-O-acetyl derivatives 6a-c. Heating 5a-c with acetic anhydride at 100 °C gave oxadiazolines 7a-c. Compound 8, obtained by refluxing 4 with carbon disulfide, was alkylated to 9 or reacted to give 10. Further reactions yielded acetoxy derivative 13 and hydroxy derivative 14. Compounds 17a-e and 18a-e were synthesized using thiomorpholinophenyl ureido/thioureido-s-triazine. These compounds were characterized and evaluated for antibacterial activity against Gram (+ve) bacteria (B. subtilis, S. aureus) and Gram (-ve) bacteria (E. coli, P. aeruginosa) in addition to yeast-like fungi (C. albicans). Compounds 11, 13, 15, 16, 17c-e, and 18a-e showed the highest antibacterial activity. Molecular docking was performed to study their binding with transpeptidases.

Introduced species can have harmful impacts on native species and ecosystems. Certain species can benefit from anthropogenic activities and habitat modification, even outside of their native ranges. Introduced species in Saudi Arabia have received little attention, which has resulted in limited knowledge on this topic, especially regarding the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia. One bird species introduced to Saudi Arabia is the common myna (Acridotheres tristis), which appears to be invading vast areas of the country. For the first time, the distribution and habitat preferences of the common myna have been investigated across different habitats in Tabuk Province, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Notably, common mynas were detected in habitats with different conditions, including urban, suburban, and agricultural habitats. Overall, the common myna appears to be a flexible species that has adapted to this arid environment and effectively uses available resources in foraging and nest site selection. Common mynas were observed in both urban and suburban environments of Tabuk City with their presence being noticeably higher in urban and suburban than in agricultural habitats. This suggests that the centers of human activity and urban/suburban development seem to be preferable sites for this species, as shown by analyzing the human influence index. Based on observations from fieldwork, the common myna population is expected to increase since breeding appears to be escalating with no major threats. The current ecological status of the common myna and its range expansion to different habitats in northwestern Saudi Arabia is worrying and thus warrants further monitoring and investigation.

ABSTRACT For centuries, medicinal plants with abundant supplies of phytochemicals that are physiologically active have been used in traditional medicine. Numerous of these contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities that help lower the risk of numerous diseases. The illness coccidiosis affects many animals and results in huge monetary losses. Drug-resistant strains of Eimeria spp. have emerged because of drug addiction and usage. Therefore, Artemisia sieberi (Asteraceae family) leaves methanolic extract (ASLE) was assessed for its Phytochemical components, in vitro cytotoxicity, and anticoccidial activity. Using infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), the components of ASLE were detected. Additionally, different extract concentrations were tested for their anticancer activities when applied to breast cancer cell lines (MCF-7) and lung cancer cell lines (A549). ASLE was prepared and tested in vitro as anticoccidial using the oocyst of Eimeria papillate. Fifteen different functional groups were found to be present in ASLE using (FT-IR). Also, quantitative results showed phenolics and flavonoids of 235.5±2.7 and 47.89 ± 0.3 respectively in ASLE. Moreover, ASLE showed significant cytotoxicity against cancer cells. The LC50 of ASLE was obtained at 98.6± 1.8μg/mL for the A549 and 253.9±4.4μg/mL for the MCF-7 cell lines. At 96 h, significant inhibition of process sporulation for E. papillata oocysts was observed when exposed to ASLE (300mg/mL) and formalin 5%, while amprolium, DettolTM, and phenol showed different levels of inhibition. Our findings demonstrated the presence of anticoccidial in ASLE, which encourages the performance of multiple in vivo investigations to find an effective treatment.

Herein, durable multi-functional silk is successfully prepared via in-situ clustering of nanopalladium, under the assistance of infrared irradiation. Whereas, the produced fabric acquired superior antimicrobial, UV-resistance and self-cleaning potentialities. Different instrumental analyses were performed, to reveal that; size average of nanopalladium was ranged in 8.6–21.4 nm. Additionally, increment in the nanopalladium concentration reflected in observable improvement of the mechanical properties, color strength and thermal stability. Yellowish degree was significantly increased from 22.36 for silk finished with 100 ppm of nanopalladium (silk-Pd-1) to 42.52 for silk finished with 300 ppm of nanopalladium (silk-Pd-3). Functional treatment of silk with higher concentrated nanopalladium exhibited the highest microbicide action even after 5 washing cycles, the microbial reduction percentage was evaluated to be 67 %, 65 % & 70 % against “St. Aureus, E. Coli and C. Albicans”, respectively. Ultraviolet protective factor (UPF) was superiorly evaluated for silk-Pd-3 to be 98.1 and 40.4 before and after 5 washing cycles. The aid of nanopalladium for acquiring the prepared silk the self-cleaning property as add-function was approved via kinetic study to show that the prepared fabrics exhibited good self-cleaning character by successive in-clustering of nanopalladium, while, t1/2 for dirt removal was 190.9 min.

ABSTRACT: This research assessed the impacts of dietary nano-propolis liposomes (NPRL) inclusion on the growth, blood biochemical components, immune function, and oxidative status of broilers exposed to cyclic heat stress (HS). Birds were fed with a basal diet supplemented with various levels of NPRL at 0 (HS), 100 (NPRL100), 250 (NPRL250) and 400 (NPRL400) mg/kg diets. Diets supplemented with NPRL significantly improved the growth indices and feed utilization, hemoglobin and red blood cells (P < 0.01). White blood cells, lymphocytes and monocytes were significantly decreased by NPRL inclusion (P < 0.001). Dietary supplementation of 250 or 400 mg of NPRL /kg reduced the pathogenic bacteria counts (Salmonella, E. coli and Enterococci) (P < 0.01). The birds fed diets with NPRL (400 mg/kg diet) significantly downregulated the mRNA IFNγ gene (p < 0.001), while both groups (NPRL100 and NPRL250) had similar results (P > 0.05). The iNOS gene was significantly decreased by the dietary NPRL inclusion in a dose-dependent manner. Birds in NRPL groups had inferior levels of the mRNA of interleukin-4 and tumor necrosis factor genes. The lysosome activity was significantly reduced by dietary 250 or 400 mg of NPRL inclusion (P < 0.001). Birds in NPRL250 and NPRL100 had greater IgG (P < 0.05) than the other groups. Regarding oxidative-related biomarkers, dietary NPRL inclusion decreased myeloperoxidase and malondialdehyde levels significantly compared to those with the HS group (P < 0.001). Broilers in the NPRL400 group had the lowest levels of total bilirubin and gamma-glutamyl transferase. NPRL250 had the lowest values of urea compared with other groups (P < 0.001). Dietary NPRL inclusion improved the broiler's hepatic and intestinal architecture exposed to cyclic heat stress. These results indicate that employing NPRL in the diets of stressed broilers can enhance heat resistance by enhancing blood metabolites and immunity, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.
