The visual cycle is a fundamental biochemical process in the retina which allows photoreceptors to convert light into electrical signals and subsequently to return to the dark state. We propose a road-map towards a new mathematical model for such process in rod cells with the aim of describing in detail the kinetics of the reconstitution of rhodopsins, the key photo-sensityve molecules, after exposure to light. The goal is to describe the accumulation of toxins (A2E and lipofuscin) in the eye both in healthy individuals and in patients affected by degenerative retinal diseases such as Stargardt disease.
