Abstract

Ice calved from the Antarctic and Greenland Ice Sheets or tidewater glaciers ultimately melts in the ocean contributing to sea-level rise. Icebergs have also been described as biological hotspots due to their potential roles as platforms for marine mammals and birds, and as micronutrient fertilizing agents. Icebergs may be especially important in the Southern Ocean where availability of the micronutrients iron and manganese extensively limits marine primary production. Whilst icebergs have long been described as a source of iron to the ocean, their nutrient signature is poorly constrained and it is unclear if there are regional differences. Here we show that 589 ice fragments collected from floating ice in contrasting regions spanning the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland, and smaller tidewater systems in Svalbard, Patagonia and Iceland have similar characteristic (micro)nutrient signatures with limited or no significant differences between regions. Icebergs are a minor or negligible source of macronutrients to the ocean with low concentrations of NOx (NO3 + NO2, median 0.51 µM), PO4 (median 0.04 µM), and dissolved Si (dSi, median 0.02 µM). In contrast, icebergs deliver elevated concentrations of dissolved Fe (dFe; mean 82 nM, median 12 nM) and Mn (dMn; mean 26 nM, median 2.6 nM). A tight correlation between total dissolvable Fe and Mn (R2 = 0.95) and a Mn:Fe ratio of 0.024 suggested a lithogenic origin for the majority of sediment present in ice. Total dissolvable Fe and Mn retained a strong relationship with sediment load (both R2 = 0.43, p<0.001), whereas weaker relationships were observed for dFe, dMn and dSi. Sediment load for Antarctic ice (median 9 mg L-1, n=144) was low compared to prior reported values for the Arctic. A particularly curious incidental finding was that melting samples of ice were observed to rapidly lose their sediment load, even when sediment layers were embedded within the ice and stored in the dark. Abstract

The Beagle Channel (BC) is a long and narrow interoceanic passage (∼270 km long and 1–12 km wide) with west-east orientation and complex bathymetry connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans at latitude 55°S. This study is the first integrated assessment of the main oceanographic features of the BC, using recent oceanographic observations from cruises, moored instruments and historical observations. The waters transported into the BC are supplied mainly by the Cape Horn Current, which carries Subantarctic Water (SAAW) at depth (100 m below surface) along the Pacific Patagonian continental shelf break. SAAW enters the continental shelf via a submarine canyon at the western entrance of the BC. The SAAW is diluted by fresh, nutrient depleted (nitrate, phosphate and silicic acid) Estuarine Water (EW) from Cordillera Darwin Ice Field (CDIF) forming modified SAAW (mSAAW). Abstract

Around the Greenlandic and Antarctic coastlines, sediment plumes associated with glaciers are significant sources of lithogenic material to the ocean. These plumes contain elevated concentrations of a range of trace metals, especially in particle bound phases, but it is not clear how these particles affect dissolved (<0.2 µm) metal distributions in the ocean. Here we show, using transects in 8 glacier fjords, trends in the distribution of dissolved iron, cobalt, nickel and copper (dFe, dCo, dNi, dCu). Following rapid dFe loss close to glacier outflows, dFe concentrations in particular showed strong similarities between different fjords. Similar dFe concentrations were also observed between seasons/years when Nuup Kangerlua (SW Greenland) was revisited in spring, mid- and late-summer. Dissolved Cu, dCo and dNi concentrations were more variable and showed different gradients with salinity depending on the fjord, season and year. The lack of consistent trends for dCu and dNi largely reflects less pronounced differences contrasting the concentration of inflowing shelf waters with fresher glacially-modified waters. Particles also made only small contributions to total dissolvable Cu (dCu constituted 83 ± 28% of total dissolvable Cu) and Ni (dNi constituted 86 ± 28% of total dissolvable Ni) within glacier plumes. For comparison, dFe was a lower fraction of total dissolvable Fe; 3.5 ± 4.8%. High concentrations of total dissolvable Fe in some inner-fjord environments, up to 77 µM in Ameralik (SW Greenland), may drive enhanced removal of scavenged type elements, such as Co. Further variability may have been driven by local bedrock mineralogy, which could explain high concentrations of dNi (25–29 nM) and dCo (6–7 nM) in one coastal region of west Greenland (Kangaatsiaq). Abstract

Coccolithophores are potentially affected by ongoing ocean acidification, where rising CO 2 lowers seawater pH and calcite saturation state (Ωcal). Southern Patagonian fjords and channels provide natural laboratories for studying these issues due to high variability in physical and chemical conditions. We surveyed coccolithophore assemblages in Patagonian fjords during late spring 2015 and early spring 2017. Surface Ωcal exhibited large variations driven mostly by freshwater inputs. High- Ωcal conditions (max. 3.6) occurred in the Archipelago Madre de Dios. Ωcal ranged from 2.0–2.6 in the western Strait of Magellan and 1.5–2.2 in the inner channel and was subsaturating (0.5) in Skyring Sound. Emiliania huxleyi was the only coccolithophore widely distributed in Patagonian fjords (> 96 % of total coccolithophores), only disappearing in the Skyring Sound, a semi-closed mesohaline system. Correspondence analysis associated higher E. huxleyi biomasses with lower diatom biomasses. The highest E. huxleyi abundances in Patagonia were in the lower range of those reported in Norwegian fjords. Predominant morphotypes were distinct from those previously documented in nearby oceans but similar to those of Norwegian fjords. Moderately calcified forms of E. huxleyi A morphotype were uniformly distributed throughout Patagonia fjords. The exceptional R/hyper-calcified coccoliths, associated with low Ωcal values in Chilean and Peruvian coastal upwellings, were a minor component associated with high Ωcal levels in Patagonia. Outlying mean index (OMI) niche analysis suggested that pH and Ωcal conditions explained most variation in the realized niches of E. huxleyi morphotypes. The moderately calcified A morphotype exhibited the widest niche breadth (generalist), while the R/hyper-calcified morphotype exhibited a more restricted realized niche (specialist). Nevertheless, when considering an expanded sampling domain, including nearby southeast Pacific coastal and offshore waters, even the R/hyper-calcified morphotype exhibited a higher niche breadth than other closely phylogenetically related coccolithophore species. Abstract

Vargas and collaborators (Vargas et al., 2018), therein V2018, reported measurements of pH, total alkalinity (AT), dissolved inorganic carbon (CT), dissolved oxygen (DO) and other hydrographic variables along a portion of the Strait of Magellan and associated fjords during the spring of 2010. Using the measured values of AT and pH to calculate the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2), they showed that DO supersaturated waters in the upper 50 m depth were often associated with pCO2 higher than atmospheric CO2 levels. Here we show that this anomalous pattern arises because V2018′s carbonate system parameters were apparently incorrectly calculated, resulting in positively biased pCO2 values. AT measurements in this layer were often higher than the marine end‐member, which could indicate an additional source of bias. Biased carbonate system parameters used by V2018 imply a sub‐estimation of the capacity of CO2 uptake, with important consequences for local capacity to modulate the potential deleterious effects of freshening and ocean acidification on fjord biota. The critical analysis of the global sources of uncertainty in carbonate‐system parameters, and evaluation of internal and external consistency (i.e., with complementary hydrographic information or with previous reports), are necessary to detect bias, and generate data with sufficient quality to study the effect of ocean acidification on marine ecosystems (GOA‐ON, 2019). Abstract

Coumarin compounds have been described as anti-inflammatories, and chemotherapeutic agents as well as antioxidants. However, the origin of the antioxidant activity of non phenolic coumarins remains obscure. In the present report, we demonstrate that non-phenolic 7-dialkyl-aminocoumarins may also have significant antioxidant properties against free radicals derived from 2,2′-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride under aerobic conditions. This atypical behaviour is due to the presence of traces of very reactive hydroxycinnamic acid-type compounds. Changing functional groups at the C-3 and C-4 positions shifts the reactivity of the compounds from peroxyl to alkoxyl free radicals. Kinetic and theoretical studies based on Density Functional Theory support the formation of reactive hydroxycinnamic acid and directly link the antioxidant behaviour of the compounds to hydrogen atom transfer.
