Twenty-eight species of Verrucariaceae are reported from Nepal. One genus and nine species are described as new: Nesothele gen. nov., sister to Staurothele s. lat., with a crustose to squamulose thallus, hymenial algae and 4–8 colourless muriform ascospores per ascus; Nesothele glebulosa sp. nov., resembling N. rugulosa but with smaller perithecia; Thelidium uvidulum sp. nov., producing a thin thallus with soralia, prominent perithecia, and 1-septate ascospores; Verrucaria antepotens sp. nov., having a well-developed thallus with dark-sided areoles, immersed perithecia, and small ascospores 12.5–16.5 μm long; V. lactea sp. nov., resembling V. praetermissa but with larger ascospores and a strongly deviating ITS sequence; V. parvipeltata sp. nov., with brown, basally constricted areoles on an extensive dark prothallus; V. senta sp. nov., with a brown cracked thallus and prominent naked perithecia; Willeya eminens sp. nov., with prominent perithecia, and differing from W. protrudens in its ITS sequence; W. irrigata sp. nov. with a thallus cracked into dark-sided areoles, and relatively large ascospores 28.5–40 μm long; W. nepalensis sp. nov. with a cracked thallus, immersed perithecia and a distinctive ITS sequence. Three species complexes might contain new taxa, but wider geographical sampling is necessary before delimiting species: Thelidium minutulum, Verrucaria elaeomelaena and V. hydrophila. Five new combinations are made: Willeya honghensis comb. nov. (for Staurothele honghensis), Nesothele globosa comb. nov. (for Endocarpon globosum), N. hymenogonia comb. nov. (for Staurothele hymenogonia), N. rugulosa comb. nov. (for Staurothele rugulosa) and N. succedens comb. nov. (for Staurothele succedens). Four species are unidentified.

4. Lithocalla (Ascomycota, Lecanorales), a new genus of leprose lichens containing usnic acid

The identity of Lecanora ecorticata has been uncertain due to conflicting reports of the presence of zeorin and the loss of the holotype. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the species probably belongs in Ramalinaceae, where it is the first leprose species reported. Zeorin was found to be absent in recently collected material of L. ecorticata, including specimens from the type locality, and the report of zeorin in the lost holotype is considered to be due to contamination. A new genus, Lithocalla, is erected to accommodate L. ecorticata and a second closely related species, that occurs in the Falkland Islands, is newly combined as Lithocalla malouina. A lectotype is selected for L. ecorticata. Lithocalla is characterized by a leprose thallus containing usnic acid with fatty acids and terpenoids, but no zeorin; ascomata and conidiomata are unknown.

Porina collinaOrange, Palice & Klepsland is described as new from siliceous rocks in the Czech Republic, Great Britain and Norway. The thallus produces isidioid propagules which resemble those inP. rosei,P. hibernicaandP. pseudohibernica, but which are more fragile and poorly-defined, and almost ecorticate; the perithecial wall is dark purplish brown and the ascospores are 3-septate. Sequences of the mitochondrial ribosomal DNA suggest that the new species belongs in thePorina byssophilaclade.

6. Large genetic divergence of new, morphologically similar species of sterile lichens from Europe (Lepraria, Stereocaulaceae, Ascomycota): concordance of DNA sequence data with secondary metabolites

Lichenized fungi of the genus Lepraria are known for their paucity of morphological characters. Species identification is therefore largely based on secondary chemistry. We investigated different chemotypes of the morphologically highly similar L. jackii species complex by internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing. In phylogenetic analyses including all available Lepraria species, samples belonging to different chemotypes of the L. jackii agg. corresponded to four highly divergent clusters. While true L. jackii was genetically uniform, the other three clades represented previously unrecognized species. They originated from different major speciation events, and two of them were not closely related to any other species. Assessment of intraspecific genetic variability revealed four different patterns with respect to geographic scale. ITS sequences proved to be the most reliable and distinctive characters for species recognition in the Lepraria jackii complex and were in accordance with chemical and ecogeographic data. Frequent occurrence of long branches, relatively few resolved relationships despite high genetic variability, and the discovery and description of a considerable part of the Lepraria species within the last 10 years suggest that the genus is probably much larger than currently known. The diversification of this asexual group in the potential absence of recombination is discussed. © The Willi Hennig Society 2008.

Caloplaca solis described as a new species from limestone and basic siliceous rocks on the southern and western coasts of Great Britain. It is characterized by a well-developed, crustose, non-placodioid, epilithic, cracked, orange-yellow thallus, almost concolorous apothecia up to 0·66 mm diameter, and ascosporesc. 11·0–12·2–13·0 µm long with a septumc. 0·4×the ascospore length.Caloplaca dalmaticais related but differs in the endolithic or only thinly epilithic thallus.Caloplaca marinais darker orange in colour, with more convex areoles, and is mostly confined to the splash zone of the seashore.Caloplaca maritimadiffers in the typically more convex, sometimes isolated areoles, and often in the presence of a crenulate thalline margin in young apothecia.Caloplaca itianais newly reported from Great Britain from coastal limestone; it differs fromC. solin the thallus being endolithic or almost so, and fromC. dalmaticain the more completely endolithic thallus and the larger ascospores.

Nomenclatural type definitions are one of the most important concepts in biological nomenclature. Being physical objects that can be re-studied by other researchers, types permanently link taxonomy (an artificial agreement to classify biological diversity) with nomenclature (an artificial agreement to name biological diversity). Two proposals to amend the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN), allowing DNA sequences alone (of any region and extent) to serve as types of taxon names for voucherless fungi (mainly putative taxa from environmental DNA sequences), have been submitted to be voted on at the 11th International Mycological Congress (Puerto Rico, July 2018). We consider various genetic processes affecting the distribution of alleles among taxa and find that alleles may not consistently and uniquely represent the species within which they are contained. Should the proposals be accepted, the meaning of nomenclatural types would change in a fundamental way from physical objects as sources of data to the data themselves. Such changes are conducive to irreproducible science, the potential typification on artefactual data, and massive creation of names with low information content, ultimately causing nomenclatural instability and unnecessary work for future researchers that would stall future explorations of fungal diversity. We conclude that the acceptance of DNA sequences alone as types of names of taxa, under the terms used in the current proposals, is unnecessary and would not solve the problem of naming putative taxa known only from DNA sequences in a scientifically defensible way. As an alternative, we highlight the use of formulas for naming putative taxa (candidate taxa) that do not require any modification of the ICN. Trapeliais a small genus of worldwide distribution.Trapelia coarctatahas long been regarded as a morphologically variable species and phylogenetic studies have suggested that it is non-monophyletic, or at least that species are frequently misidentified. The phylogenetic relationships of freshly-collected material ofTrapeliawere studied using ITS, mitochondrial SSU rDNA and to a small extent also beta-tubulin sequence data, together with chemical and morphological characters. Sequence data combined with morphology and chemistry confirm that the diversity of the genus at species-level has been underestimated.Trapelia coarctatais defined in a more restricted way and many specimens previously referable to this taxon are assigned to the reinstated speciesT. elacista, which differs in subtle morphological characters including a crack separating the thallus and apothecium in well-developed thalli.Trapelia involutais reinstated as a separate, though closely related, species toT. glebulosabased on sequence data, morphology and chemistry, and is lectotypified.Trapelia collarisis a distinctive species described as new from Great Britain which has an extensive, cracked thallus with abruptly thickening marginal areoles arising on an inconspicuous prothallus, relatively small apothecia (rarely exceeding 300 µm diameter) and contains 5-O-methylhiascic acid as the major secondary substance.Trapelia obtegensis shown to include frequent non-sorediate morphs which have doubtless been misidentified as other species. The number of species ofTrapeliaconsidered to occur in Europe is thus raised from five to eight. The genus is newly reported for the Falkland Islands where seven species occur:T. coarctata,T. placodioides,T. sitienssp. nov. (with a thin, extensive thallus, sessile apothecia, 5-O-methylhiascic acid as the major secondary substance and the presence of conidiomata),T. tristissp. nov. (with relatively small apothecia up to 460 µm diameter, presence of gyrophoric acid as the major substance and an absence of conidiomata) and three unidentified species represented by very sparse material. All the species studied, with the possible exception of the three unidentified species, can usually be distinguished by morphological features, particularly the method of development of the thallus and the shape and distribution of the areoles, but morphological variation in response to microhabitat variation is likely to make a proportion of specimens difficult to assign to species in the absence of sequence data.

Leprocaulon calcicolais described as new from walls in SE England; it is leprose, pale to mid blue-grey, and contains zeorin and usnic acid. It differs fromL. knudseniifrom North America in its habitat on mortared walls rather than non-calcareous rock and in its ITS sequence. ‘Lecanora’ecorticatadiffers in the yellower colour, and the presence of unidentified fatty acids and traces of unknown terpenoids (but not zeorin) by thin-layer chromatography. Leprose lichens with usnic acid are still poorly known and sequencing must be used to support morphological and chemical studies.

The freshwater lichens Verrucaria elaeomelaena , V. alpicola, and V. funckii (Verrucariaceae/Ascomycota) have long been confused with V. margacea and V. placida and conclusions on the substratum preference and distribution have been obscured due to misidentifications. Independent phylogenetic analyses of a multigene dataset ( RPB 1, mtSSU, nuLSU) and an ITS-dataset combined with morphological and ecological characters confirm that the Verrucaria elaeomelaena agg. consists of several cryptic taxa. It includes V. elaeomelaena s.str. with mostly grey to mid-brown thalli and transparent exciple base which cannot be distinguished morphologically from several other unnamed clades from low elevations, the semi-cryptic V. humida spec. nov. , which is characterised by smaller perithecia, shorter and more elongated spores compared to other species in this group and V. alpicola with specimens mostly from high elevations, dark brown to black thalli, a brown exciple base and large ascospores. While Verrucaria funckii is confirmed to be restricted to siliceous substrata, limestone and siliceous substrata are both colonised by V. elaeomelaena s.str. as well as by representatives of various other clades. The substratum type cannot be seen as a diagnostic character for taxa within this species group. The taxa included in Verrucaria elaeomelaena agg. are closely related to V. submersella and together with V. funckii they form a sister clade to the “ Endocarpon -group” in the Verrucariaceae. Verrucaria margacea is superficially similar to some specimens of V. elaeomelaena agg. It is nested within an unresolved larger clade with Dermatocarpon , the subclades of the Endocarpon - and the V. elaeomelaena -group. Verrucaria margacea can be distinguished from most of the specimens in the V. elaeomelaena group by its generally non subgelatinous thallus, often with distinct cracks, narrowly ellipsoidal ascospores and the general absence of a black basal layer or dark pigments in the exciple base. The form and size of the ascospores distinguish V. placida from most specimens in the V. elaeomelaena complex, but there is overlap with some forms of V. alpicola . Epitypes are proposed for V. elaeomelaena, V. alpicola and V. margacea and a European key to the species of subgelatinous freshwater Verrucaria with spreading involucrellum and large ascospores is provided.

The taxonomy of species related to Verrucaria praetermissa is investigated using morphological and molecular data. Verrucaria devensis is closely related to V. praetermissa but distinguished by the darker colour, the thinner and more uneven thallus, and the ITS sequence. This species is based on Leucocarpopsis devensis G. Salisb., which was originally described as the type species of a monotypic genus differing from Verrucaria by the absence of dark pigment. Verrucaria lapidicola is a new species from stones in non-aquatic situations; it is related to V. praetermissa and V. elaeina but differs in the very thin thallus and ITS sequence.

Verrucaria nodosa sp. nov. and V. rosula sp. nov. each have a thallus composed of initially discrete units which coalesce and overlap with age, forming an uneven crust. They are related species and similar in appearance, but the thallus units are coarser in Verrucaria nodosa, and the involucrellum is typically more regularly thickened than in V. rosula. Verrucaria placida sp. nov. has a smooth, subgelatinous thallus; it is related to V. hydrophila sp. nov. but differs in the larger ascospores and perithecia. It is not closely related to V. andesiatica but is morphologically similar, differing mainly in the narrower ascospores. Verrucaria hydrophila has been widely known as V. hydrela auct., non Ach. or V. denudata Zsch. nom. illeg. Verrucaria laevata Ach. is considered to be a nomen dubium.

Two species of Placopyrenium, P. cinereoatratum and P. formosum, occur on siliceous rocks at the margins of rivers and lakes. Placopyrenium cinereoatratum is sometimes parasitic on Staurothele fissa; P. formosum is described as a new species, and is initially parasitic on Aspicilia aquatica. The genus Placopyrenium currently contains 11 accepted species, characterized by an areolate to subsquamulose thallus, immersed perithecia lacking an involucrellum, colour- less, simple to 1-septate ascospores, and pycnidia of Dermatocarpon-type. The lateral surface and (where present) the lower surface of the areoles are often dark brown, and several species of the genus are parasitic on other lichens, at least in the early stages of growth. The genus was originally described for subsquamulose taxa, but several crustose species previously referred to the poly- phyletic genus, Verrucaria s.lat., are now included. A multigene phylogenetic analysis of numerous species in Verrucariaceae has shown that three species, P. bucekii (Nadv. & Serv.) Breuss (the type of the genus), P. canellum (Nyl.) Gueidan & Cl. Roux and P. fuscellum (Turner) Gueidan & Cl. Roux, formed a well-supported mono- phyletic group, but P. lecideoides (A. Massal.) Gueidan & Cl. Roux grouped with species referred to Verruculopsis, the sister-group to Placopyrenium (Gueidan et al. 2007; Gueidan et al. 2008), and is now placed in that genus as V. lecideoides (A. Massal.) Gueidan & Cl. Roux. In Great Britain, two species now referred to Placopyrenium (P. canellum and P. fuscellum) have been recognized up to now (Coppins 2002). These were revised by Orange (2004), as part of a 'Verrucaria fus- cella group', but two additional, previously unidentified species are known to occur on rocks in British rivers; these are described below.

Biatora Britannica sp. nov is described from Wales. The species is the sorediate sister taxon of the Madeiran Biatora hertelii. The close relationship is supported by the presence of the hymenial pigment Hertelii-green, which is hitherto known only from these two species. Molecular data from the nuclear ITS-region of 14 Bratora¯ species renders further support for the close relationship of both species. Sterile, sorediate material from the British Isles earlier referred to B. efflorescens may in fact belong to B. britannica.
