Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets are grown at room temperature by pulsed laser deposition that exhibits remarkable functional properties, creating a scenario for “h-BN on demand” under a frugal thermal budget, essential for nanotechnology.

Two-dimensional van der Waals (2D-vdW) layered hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has gained tremendous research interest over recent years due to its unconventional domain growth morphology, fascinating properties and application potentials as an excellent dielectric layer for 2D-based nano-electronics. However, the unidirectional domain growth of h-BN thin films directly on insulating substrates remains significantly challenging because of high-bonding anisotropicity and complex growth kinetics than the conventional thin films growth, thus resulting in the formation of randomly oriented domains morphology, and hindering its usefulness in integrated nano-devices. Here, ultra-wide bandgap h-BN thin films are grown directly on low-miscut atomically smooth highly insulating c-plane sapphire substrates (without using any metal catalytic layer) by pulsed laser deposition, showing remarkable unidirectional triangular-shape domains morphology. This unidirectional domain growth is attributed to the step-edge guided nucleation caused by reducing the film-substrate interfacial symmetry and energy, thereby breaking the degeneracy of nucleation sites of random domains, as revealed by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Through extensive characterizations, we further demonstrate the excellent single crystal-like functional properties of films. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis of human bone collagen from 38 individuals was undertaken to assess diet at the Late Roman–Early Byzantine (AD 300–700) cemetery site, Joan Planells, in Ibiza, Spain. The results (δ13C = − 18.7 ± 0.5‰ and δ15N = 10.1 ± 1.3‰) show that the diet of this population was derived predominantly from C3 terrestrial resources; plant foods were likely dietary staples along with meat and/or dairy produce comprising an important component of diet. Variation in stable isotope ratio values suggests individual differences in diet. Two individuals, both males, are statistical outliers with distinctive δ15N values (14.4 and 14.8‰) that point to significant consumption of marine resources. Females, on average, have higher δ13C values than males. The parsimonious explanation for this observation is the greater inclusion of C4 resources such as millet in the diets of females. Comparison of the diet of the Joan Planells population with other Late Roman period sites on the Hispanic mainland and other parts of the Mediterranean region suggests that populations may have been responding to a combination of socio-political and environmental factors that could have included Roman influence of food consumptive practices in some of these distant locales.

Histology of dry bone tissue has many scientific applications. The histological analysis of bone requires the production of good quality thin sections. Many researchers have developed new histological techniques and/or they have refined existing ones. In this paper, we describe a revision of histological techniques for obtaining thin sections from modern dry bone. The method is easy to apply and the equipment required is commonly found in a histology laboratory. In comparison to other techniques presented in the literature, this adapted method reduces the number of consumables and steps, thereby improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the procedure.

Novel synthetic biomaterials able to support direct tissue growth and retain cellular phenotypical properties are promising building blocks for the development of tissue engineering platforms for accurate and fast therapy screening for cancer. The aim of this study is to validate an aligned, pristine multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT) platform for in vitro studies of pancreatic cancer as a systematic understanding of interactions between cells and these CNT substrates is lacking. Our results demonstrate that our CNT scaffolds-which are easily tuneable to form sheets/fibers-support growth, proliferation, and spatial organization of pancreatic cancer cells, indicating their great potential in cancer tissue engineering. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope analysis of bone collagen from 57 human and 137 faunal samples was conducted with the aim of reconstructing human diet at the Late Chalcolithic (mid-4th millennium BC) site of Camlibel Tarlasi, north-central Anatolia. The analyses indicate that the diet of the inhabitants of Camlibel Tarlasi was based largely on C3 resources. Comparison of human and faunal δ15N values suggest that animal proteins were likely to be of secondary importance to diet, with cultigens such as wheat and barley and potentially pulses taking the role of dietary staples. Age-related variation in stable isotope signals was identified.
