There is still no definitive cure for this highly transmittable illness. Immunization and breaking the chain of infection is the only successful approach to mitigate its spread. Our study explored the adherence to COVID-19 preventive measures and its associating factors among Health Care Professionals (HCPs) working in Saudi Arabia.Methods: For this cross-sectional study, an online survey was conducted from December 01, 2020, to March 31, 2021, among 978 HCPs in Saudi Arabia. The self-administered questionnaire consisted of demographic information, COVID-19 preventive behaviors, knowledge, attitude, fear, and risk. Mann–Whitney U-test, Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis, Spearman correlation, and binary logistic regression tests were used in data analysis.Results: Most of the HCPs were Saudi nationals (86.9%), females (63.1%), age group 20– 29 years (42.3%), Middle Eastern ethnicity (82.5%), and working in the government sector (80.8%). A 52.2% of the participants were compliant with COVID-19 preventive behavior. The most and the least compliant preventive behaviors were “wearing masks” (88.8% compliance) and “keeping social distancing” (60.7% compliance). Preventive behavior was significantly higher in HCPs having a) more knowledge of COVID-19 (U=104849; p 0.001); b) positive attitude (U=84402; p 0.001); c) higher fear (U=103138; p less than 0.001) and d) nursing profession (p 0.01). COVID-19 knowledge (p< 0.001), attitude (p< 0.001), and fear (p< 0.001) contributed significantly to the prediction of preventive behavior compliance. A unit increase in COVID-19 knowledge, attitude, and fear scores raised the odds of being compliant with preventive behavior by factors of 2.34, 1.87, and 1.53 respectively.Conclusion: About half of the study participants were compliant with COVID-19 preventive behavior. Preventive behavior is significantly higher among HCPs having more knowledge of COVID-19, more fear, a positive attitude, and the “nursing” profession. Having more knowledge, a positive attitude, and more fear of COVID-19 may increase the likelihood of being compliant with preventive behavior.Keywords: health care professionals, health personnel, COVID-19, prevention, behavior

This study was performed to test if presepsin, an inflammatory marker, is a predictor of coronary artery calcification (CAC) in hemodialysis (HD) patients.Patients and Methods: This study was a cross-sectional design involving 48 HD patients and 13 control subjects. Coronary artery calcification score (CACs) was evaluated by a high resolution, ECG synchronized computed tomography of the heart using a CT calcium scoring. Presepsin and other laboratory analyses were performed on blood samples drawn before HD.Results: Presepsin levels in HD patients were 14 times higher than healthy controls (P< 0.01). Also, all laboratory tests except for vitamin D were significantly different than controls. Presepsin, phosphorus levels, and calcium-phosphate product were positively correlated with increasing CACs within groups of zero to moderate calcifications (p< 0.05, R=0.459 and < 0.01, R=0.591, respectively). These correlations were not seen with eGFR, PTH, calcium, vitamin D, CRP, or ESR levels. Furthermore, the log-transformed data of presepsin correlated with 1– 15 months of HD vintage (p< 0.05, R=0.482), whereas CACs data correlated with 1– 20 months of HD vintage (p< 0.05, R=0.425).Conclusion: Although this study is preliminary and has a limited number of patients, it shows that presepsin, as an inflammatory marker, correlates with the development of moderate CAC in HD patients and may predict CAC development. Therefore, measuring presepsin and managing inflammation before and during the early phases of HD may lower coronary calcification development. Background/objective: To describe the ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) diagnostic features in patients suspected of experiencing chronic inflammation due to phacoantigenic uveitis SUBJECTS/METHODS: This single-center study enrolled patients referred to the Uveitis Department of Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi for chronic anterior uveitis and traumatic cataract. Patients' demographics, causes and dates of the inciting traumatic event, and ophthalmic findings were recorded. 20-MHz UBM assessment of the status of the anterior capsule and the crystalline lens was performed. Then, cataract surgery was performed using a single technique. Comparison of the anterior capsule and lens status by clinical, UBM, and intraoperative evaluation., Results: Forty eyes with phacoantigenic uveitis were considered. The slit-lamp examination could identify interruption of the anterior capsule in 20% of the eyes and liquefied sinking lens material in 10%. An intra-operative defect in the anterior capsule was documented in 87.5% of eyes. UBM imaging showed anterior capsule irregularity in 63.3% of eyes and confirmed the presence of anterior capsule defects in 47.5% and lens matter herniating into the anterior chamber in 15%. Hypoechogenic lacunae within the cataractous lens were detected in 12.5% of eyes. For UBM, sensitivity and specificity values were 82.86% (95% CI: 66.35-93.44) and 100% (95% CI: 47.82-100), respectively. Positive and negative predictive values for UBM were 100% (95% CI: 88.06-100) and 45.45% (95% CI: 28.69-63.32), respectively. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer worldwide, acting as a significant public health problem. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a key chemotherapy for various types of cancer, due to its broad anticancer activity. However, the emergence of drug resistance is a considerable limitation in the clinical application of 5-FU. Quercetin (QC) is proposed as an adjuvant therapy to minimize drug resistance to chemotherapeutics and enhance their pharmacological efficacy. The oral delivery of 5-FU and QC is challenged by poor aqueous solubility of QC and poor cellular permeability of 5-FU. To solve this issue, novel polylactide- co -glycolide (PLGA) combinatorial nanoparticles loading 5-FU and QC were prepared to deliver them directly to the colon. These sustained-release combinatorial nanoparticles recorded a significant decrease in cancer cell proliferation, C-reactive protein (CRP) level, and Interleukin-8 (IL-8) expression by 30.08%, 40.7%, and 46.6%, respectively. Head and neck cancers, including nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), are relatively common in Saudi Arabia. Radiotherapy is a standard treatment for NPC, but it can lead to side effects, including post-radiation otitis media with effusion (OME). Managing post-radiotherapy OME remains a topic of debate, with various interventions proposed. This study aims to review the efficacy of different methods to manage post-radiotherapy OME in NPC. This includes tympanostomy tube insertion, frequent myringotomies, and observation. A systematic review was carried out for articles published between 1975 and 2023 following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Excluded from the analysis were articles that involved patients undergoing surgical treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer, studies that focused on patients with other head and neck cancers who developed OME after radiotherapy, research investigating the effectiveness of surgical procedures unrelated to tympanostomy tube insertion, studies written in non-English language, and case reports, reviews, or conference letters. A total of 450 studies were screened, of which six studies were included in the review, yielding 328 patients. The mean age ranged between 46 and 52 years. Follow-up varied from six months to 11 years. The intervention in all studies was tympanostomy tube insertion, and the controls were myringotomy, observation, or tympanic membrane fenestration with cauterization. The use of recurrent myringotomies for the treatment of OME in patients with NP post-radiotherapy is associated with improved chances for the resolution of effusion and decreased risk of complications when compared to tympanostomy tube insertion. Rice cultivation has a key role in food security worldwide; on the other hand, it has a high potential impact on the environment and human health, mainly due to the extensive pesticides use and greenhouse gas emissions caused by flooded cultivation. In Italy, the rice sector based mainly on high-input monoculture. The transition toward organic agriculture can improve the environmental performance of rice farming according to the actual European sustainable food production strategy. Through LCA methodology, the study aims to evaluate the variability of the environmental impacts and the mitigation potential of four management strategies suitable for organic rice production in North Italy and two production potential levels observed during three-year monitoring on 10 farms in the study area. The LCA analysis includes the wide range of agronomic realities that characterise this farming system, assessing the variation in environmental performance by exploring eight plausible and possible scenarios for organic rice. Results suggest a considerable potential of organic rice production to mitigate its impact on natural resources, depending on the chosen agricultural practices. In particular, six LCA indicators showed a potential of reduction over 40 %, shifting from the worst-performing management to the better one. Finally, the large variability of climate change impacts assessed, both in this study and in literature, is due to the corresponding existing large variability in terms of yield and available patterns of agricultural practices. Today the farmers could reach acceptable yield values thanks to more efficient management than in the past. The potential of the surface dielectric barrier discharge technique (SDBD) was evaluated to decontaminate the date palm fruit. Preliminary investigations emphasized that Aspergillus niger fungus was predominant in most date samples as a post-harvest infestation. The influence of SDBD techniques on the viability of A. niger isolated from date varieties was investigated and documented. Physical and chemical characterizations of treated dates were assessed, and statistical correlation coefficients were calculated and elucidated. A 4 log 10 reduction of A. niger radial growth was observed at 3 min exposure/15 days of incubation. Simultaneous reductions in pH, water activity, and moisture content of treated dates were observed when compared to untreated dates. Statistical analysis showed a positive correlation between physical and chemical variables with the viability of A. niger in treated samples. Therefore, we believe that SDBD treatment will be a promising technique for decontaminating date fruits from attacked fungi, which will positively impact sustainable food security and consumer health., (© 2022. A hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the accumulation of tau protein in the brain. Compelling evidence indicates that the presence of tau aggregates causes irreversible neuronal destruction, eventually leading to synaptic loss. So far, the inhibition of tau aggregation has been recognized as one of the most effective therapeutic strategies. Cannabidiol (CBD), a major component found in Cannabis sativa L., has antioxidant activities as well as numerous neuroprotective features. Therefore, we hypothesize that CBD may serve as a potent substance to hamper tau aggregation in AD. In this study, we aim to investigate the CBD effect on the aggregation of recombinant human tau protein 1N/4R isoform using biochemical methods in vitro and in silico. Using Thioflavin T (ThT) assay, circular dichroism (CD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), we demonstrated that CBD can suppress tau fibrils formation. Moreover, by quenching assay, docking, and job's plot, we further demonstrated that one molecule of CBD interacts with one molecule of tau protein through a spontaneous binding. Experiments performed by quenching assay, docking, and Thioflavin T assay further established that the main forces are hydrogen Van der Waals and some non-negligible hydrophobic forces, affecting the lag phase of tau protein kinetics. Taken together, this study provides new insights about a natural substance, CBD, for tau therapy which may offer new hope for the treatment of AD.

Introduction With the expeditious spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), healthcare workers have undoubtedly faced a higher risk of contracting the disease compared to the general public. This study aimed to stratify the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 infection among healthcare workers in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia and shed light on their level of knowledge, attitude, and fear towards the disease. Methods A quantitative cross-sectional study, involving 978 Arabic and English-speaking healthcare workers, was conducted using a self-administered online questionnaire. The knowledge, attitude, and fear scales were developed by researchers using the most updated information regarding coronavirus disease 2019. The Objective Risk Stratification tool developed in the United Kingdom was used to measure the risk level of contracting coronavirus disease 2019. Collected data were analyzed and interpreted using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software. Results Out of the 978 participants, 63.1% were female, 74.6% were 20-39 years old, 86.9% were Saudis, and 31.3% worked as physicians. The most common health-related risk factors for severe coronavirus disease 2019 among the study participants were smoking (23.4%), sickle cell trait (22.8%), and asthma (21.2%). The risk of contracting coronavirus disease 2019 was found to be low in 87.2% of participants, with those significantly at higher risk being male, non-Saudis, black Africans, and 70-79 years old. The knowledge level was found to be high among 54.7% of participants, with significantly higher levels being reported among females, non-Saudis, and participants who were either physicians or pharmacists. The most commonly cited source of knowledge was the Saudi Ministry of Health (82%). Participants largely demonstrated a positive attitude towards the disease (53.9%), particularly those working as physicians and in the governmental sector. The majority of participants (54.4%) were found to have a high level of fear toward the disease, with significantly higher levels being reported among females, 30-39 years old, and those who were either nurses or pharmacists. Background: Gait dysfunction or impairment is considered one of the most common and devastating physiological consequences of stroke, and achieving optimal gait is a key goal for stroke victims with gait disability along with their clinical teams. Many researchers have explored post stroke gait, including assessment tools and techniques, key gait parameters and significance on functional recovery, as well as data mining, modeling and analyses methods. Research Question: This study aimed to review and summarize research efforts applicable to quantification and analyses of post-stroke gait with focus on recent technology-driven gait characterization and analysis approaches, including the integration of smart low cost wearables and Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as feasibility and potential value in clinical settings. Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted within Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect using a set of keywords, including lower extremity, walking, post-stroke, and kinematics. Original articles that met the selection criteria were included. Results and Significance: This scoping review aimed to shed light on tools and technologies employed in post stroke gait assessment toward bridging the existing gap between the research and clinical communities. Conventional qualitative gait analysis, typically used in clinics is mainly based on observational gait and is hence subjective and largely impacted by the observer's experience. Quantitative gait analysis, however, provides measured parameters, with good accuracy and repeatability for the diagnosis and comparative assessment throughout rehabilitation. Rapidly emerging smart wearable technology and AI, including Machine Learning, Support Vector Machine, and Neural Network approaches, are increasingly commanding greater attention in gait research. The influenza D virus (IDV) was discovered less than ten years ago. Increased interest in this virus is due to its nature (RNA virus with high mutation rate), its worldwide circulation in livestock species, its probable role in bovine respiratory disease and its zoonotic potential. Until currently, the establishment of positivity cut-off of the hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay was not formalized in field conditions for the detection of antibodies directed against IDV in cattle (i.e. the proposed reservoir). In this study, the positivity cut-off of the HI assays was formally established (titre = 10) using a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. This information was used to estimate the sensitivity (68.04 to 73.20%) and the specificity (94.17 to 96.12%) of two different HI assays (HI 1 and HI 2 , with two different IDV antigens) relatively to virus micro-neutralization test (VNT) as reference test. Based on the above characteristics, the true prevalence of IDV was then estimated in Morocco using a stochastic approach. Irrespective of the HI assays used, the estimation of the true prevalence was statistically equivalent (between 48.44% and 48.73%). In addition, the Spearman rank correlation between HI titres and VNT titres was statistically good (0.76 and 0.81 for HA 1 and HA 2 , respectively). The positive (0.82 and 0.79 for HA 1 and HA 2 , respectively) and the negative (0.86 and 0.85 for HA 1 and HA 2 , respectively) agreement indices between results of HI assays and VNT were good and similar. This study allowed for a formal establishment of a positivity cut-off in HI assays for the detection of antibodies directed against IDV. This information is of prime importance to estimate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of the test relatively to the VNT (i.e. the reference test). Despite the modeled estimations of the burden of asymptomatic spread, the duration of viral positivity and infectiousness of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) remains understudied. The objective of the present study was to estimate and compare the time till viral clearance of SARS-CoV-2 in asymptomatic and non-critical symptomatic individuals. We studied 184 SARS-CoV-2-positive participants, of whom 145 were asymptomatic. Our analysis uncovered that time till viral negativity is similar for subclinical [median time till viral clearance: 11 days, interquartile range (IQR): 8, 14] and overt infections (median: 11 days, IQR: 9, 14) after controlling for age and sex. Background: The frequency of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection with viral spread is unclear. Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection development and progression was investigated in subjects undergoing mandatory quarantine on airport arrival., Methods: 2714 subjects were tested for SARS-CoV-2 and all were quarantined for 2 weeks. Viral retesting was undertaken on symptom development and routinely at 14 days if asymptomatic. Asymptomatic, positive patients underwent viral testing every 2 days to determine viral clearance., Results: 188/2714 (6.9%) patients became SARS-CoV-2 positive. On arrival, 136/188 tested positive, with 44/188 (23.4%) symptomatic and 92/188 (48.9%) asymptomatic. All 92 patients remained asymptomatic and were retested every 2 days until viral clearance. 2526 quarantined subjects remained virus free at 14 days. Viral clearance did not differ between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients (12.6 ± 1.0 days and 12.1 ± 0.4 days, respectively). Of the 52/188 (27.7%) testing negative on arrival, 27/52 subsequently became positive and developed symptoms 2-13 days after arrival. 25/188 (13.3%) remained asymptomatic and tested positive at day 14, with viral testing undertaken every 2 days in these subjects; of these, 24 remained asymptomatic, with viral clearance at 9.4 ± 0.7 days - less than for those who were asymptomatic on arrival (p < 0.002)., Conclusion: Asymptomatic patients with COVID-19 were more prevalent than those exhibiting symptoms, and are an infection reservoir., (Copyright © 2020 The Author(s). Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by a newly identified strain of the coronavirus family that has been shown to affect the hemoglobin beta chain, the same chain that has sickle cell disease (SCD) mutation. This study was undertaken to see if COVID-19 infection increased disease severity in patients with SCD., Methods: Mass screening of the Bahraini population was undertaken between February and April 2020., Results: A total of 38,092 Bahraini people were tested for COVID-19 during this period; 378 (1%) were SCD patients. Six patients with SCD had COVID-19 (1.6%): three remained asymptomatic, two had mild symptoms and one required oxygen therapy. The SCD patients had a similar average length of stay when compared with non-SCD COVID-19 patients (10.7 days)., Conclusion: The infection rate, clinical course and viral clearance seen for the SCD patients with COVID-19 were no different to those without SCD., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Rice cultivation, particularly prone to weed issues, requires practices able to effectively control them, however reducing the use of herbicides, responsible for damage to human health and ecosystem sustainability. Alternative strategies for weed management can be based on plant-plant interaction phenomena. In this context, a group of organic farmers has developed a pragmatic approach for weed containment using Lolium multiflorum Lam. as a cover crop before rice. The present study aimed to confirm the farmer field observations reporting a preferential inhibitory effect of L. multiflorum on Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch, one of the most yield-damaging rice weed, compared with Oryza sativa L. The study showed that L. multiflorum was able to significantly reduce the seed germination of E. oryzoides. It was found to be more susceptible than O. sativa both to the effect of the aqueous extract and powder of L. multiflorum leaves (23-79% vs. 3-57% and 26-100% vs. 23-31%, respectively). In addition, the leaf extract was able to affect E. oryzoides growth starting from 20% concentration both in relation to the root and shoot length while O. sativa exhibited differences compared with the control only under the influence of extract 50%. The L. multiflorum leaf characterization by NMR and UPLC-HR-MS analyses led to the identification of 35 compounds including several polyphenols, glycosyl flavonoids and glycosyl terpenoids, as well as different amino acids and organic acids. Some of them (e.g. protocatechuic and gallic acids) are already known as allelochemicals confirming that L. multiflorum is a source of plant growth inhibitors.

Popillia japonica Newman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is a highly polyphagous invasive beetle originating from Japan. This insect is highly resilient and able to rapidly adapt to new vegetation. Insect-associated microorganisms can play important roles in insect physiology, helping their hosts to adapt to changing conditions and potentially contributing to an insect's invasive potential. Such symbiotic bacteria can be part of a core microbiota that is stably transmitted throughout the host's life cycle or selectively recruited from the environment at each developmental stage. The aim of this study was to investigate the origin, stability and turnover of the bacterial communities associated with an invasive population of P. japonica from Italy. Our results demonstrate that soil microbes represent an important source of gut bacteria for P. japonica larvae, but as the insect develops, its gut microbiota richness and diversity decreased substantially, paralleled by changes in community composition. Notably, only 16.75% of the soil bacteria present in larvae are maintained until the adult stage. We further identified the micro-environments of different gut sections as an important factor shaping microbiota composition in this species, likely due to differences in pH, oxygen availability and redox potential. In addition, P. japonica also harboured a stable bacterial community across all developmental stages, consisting of taxa well known for the degradation of plant material, namely the families Ruminococcacae, Christensenellaceae and Lachnospiraceae. Interestingly, the family Christensenallaceae had so far been observed exclusively in humans. The present study is the first to investigate Border disease caused by the sheep pestivirus (SPV) in sheep herds in Morocco. Sero-epidemiological investigations were carried out in six regions of the Kingdom, known as important in terms of sheep breeding. A total of 760 blood samples were collected including aborted ewes from 28 randomly selected farms. The samples were analysed, for the determination of anti-pestivirus antibodies, using indirect ELISA technique. Next, reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) was conducted on serologically negative samples to identify possible persistently infected (PI) animals, through detection of specific RNA fragment. The results revealed an overall SPV seroprevalence in studied areas of 28.9%. The difference in seroprevalence between the six investigated regions was not statistically significant (p>0.05) and varied slightly from 20.9% to 37.5%. Furthermore, 93% of investigated farms were affected with an average seroprevalence of 22.7% (with a variation of 1%-74%). RT-PCR results were all negative, indicating the absence of PI animals in the tested samples.
