1. Experimental programme on absolute fission fragment yields with the lohengrin spectrometer: New optical and statistical methodologies

Abstract: The study of fission yields has a major impact on the characterization and understanding of the fission process and is mandatory for reactor applications. In the past with the LOHENGRIN spectrometer of the ILL, priority has been given for the studies in the light fission fragment mass range. The LPSC in collaboration with ILL and CEA has developed a measurement program on symmetric and heavy mass fission fragment distributions. The combination of measurements with ionisation chamber and Ge detectors is necessary to describe precisely the heavy fission fragment region in mass and charge. Recently, new measurements of fission yields and kinetic energy distributions are has been made on the 233U(nth,f) reaction. The focus of this work has been on the new optical and statistical methodology and the self-normalization of the data to provide new absolute measurements, independently of any libraries, and the associated experimental covariance matrix.

2. On the origin of the Reactor Antineutrino Anomalies in the context of a summation model with corrected missing beta-transitions

Abstract: The Reactor Antineutrino Anomalies are a 10-years long standing problem in neutrino physics. They refer to a norm and shape discrepancies between experimental reactor antineutrino data and the state-of-the-art model proposed by Huber and Mueller et al. This model is based on a conversion procedure of the electron energy spectra measured in the 80’s at ILL with the BILL spectrometer. Within this approach, biases due to the conversion procedure or present into the experimental electron data are directly propagated into the antineutrino spectra. Those biases have to be evaluated to see if they may be at the origin of the anomalies. To address this issue, we have recently revisited the summation method, which consists in summing over all beta-branches of decaying fission products, by implementing a phenomenological beta-decay strength model. This model allows to circumvent the main drawback of the method which is the lack of knowledge of some beta-transitions in the ENSDF nuclear database. Within this approach, we show that the bias due to the conversion method is small and could not explain the anomalies. Then we show that 235U electron and antineutrino energy spectra are not consistent whereas 239Pu and 241Pu are consistent, pointing toward an incorrect normalisation of the 235U electron energy spectra as the origin of the reactor antineutrino anomaly (RAA). Finally, the model is able to reproduce the measured 235U antineutrino energy spectra putting in evidence that the shape anomaly (the “5 MeV bump”) could probably find its origin in the measured electron energy spectra for both 235U, 239Pu and 241Pu. In this contribution, we will present the model and discuss the results.

Abstract: Nuclear fission yields are key parameters to evaluate reactor physics observables, such as fuel inventory, decay heat, spent fuel radiotoxicity, criticality but also for understanding the fission process. Despite a significant effort allocated to measure fission yields during the last decades, the recent evaluated libraries still need improvements in particular in the description of the uncertainties with the associated correlations. Additional kinds of measurements provide complementary information in order to test the models used in the nuclear data evaluation. Moreover, some discrepancies between these libraries must be explained. A common effort by the CEA, the LPSC and the ILL aims at tackling these issues by providing precise measurement of isotopic and isobaric fission yields with the related variance-covariance matrices. Nevertheless, the experimental program represents itself a large range of observables requested by the evaluations: isotopic yields, nuclear charge polarization, odd-even effect, isomeric ratio and their dependency with fission fragment kinetic energy as a probe of the nuclear de-excitation path in the (E*, Jπ) representation. Measurements for thermal neutron induced fission of 241Pu have been carried out at the Institut Laue Langevin using the LOHENGRIN mass spectrometer. Experimental program, observables reachable, results and comparison to model calculations are shown.

5. High-statistics reactor anti-neutrino energy spectra for fission and beta-decay studies

Abstract: With the availability of high-statistics and high-resolution anti-neutrino energy spectra, measured in experiments dedicated to the study of the neutrino oscillation in proximity of a nuclear reactor, we can now envisage to use these data as integral measurements to constrain fission and beta-decay models and nuclear data libraries. In this paper we present the ingredients for the simulation of an anti-neutrino energy spectrum and their sensitivity to the constraint by measured energy spectrum.

Abstract: The stereo experiment is searching for a non-standard oscillation in the propagation of anti-neutrinos produced by a nuclear reactor which could be the sign for the existence of a sterile state of eV mass and the origin of the reactor anti-neutrino anomaly. In this paper, results from 66 days of reactor turned on and 138 days of reactor turned off are reported excluding large amplitude oscillations. A special focus is put on the data analysis and studies of correlated backgrounds. In particular the origin of the correlated background measured in reactor turned off periods is discussed. This background mainly originates from neutrons produced by cosmic radiation.

Abstract: International audience; Nuclear fission is a complex process, still not yet well described by microscopic models, and its main observables are difficultto measure with accuracy. Following the capture of a thermal neutron the compound nucleus fissions in two fragments. Mostof the energy of the process is transferred in kinetic energy, whereas the nuclei are let in few tens of MeV excited states. Thisexcitation energy is then released, the majority of it within less than some nanoseconds, by the evaporation of a few neutronsand the emission of -rays in cascade.To overcome the low accuracy of microscopic models in the prediction of fission observables, nuclear technology relies onlibraries of evaluated data and semi-empirical models, like the GEF model for fission yield evaluations. Such a strategy requestssystematic and accurate experimental data on the few possible observables. Here we will present the advantages of studyingyields of fragment correlated pairs and their de-excitations using an array of high-resolution -ray detectors directly placedaround an actinide target irradiated by a thermal or cold neutron beam. Such a setup was installed at ILL in 2012 and 2013(EXILL) and campaigns were performed with 235U and 241Pu targets. This study is largely motivated by the future installation of apermanent -ray detector array at the ILL, which will be coupled to fission fragment detectors in a first construction phase and afragment separator in a second phase (FIPPS).An important outcome of EXILL data is the observation of the -ray cascade occurring in both fission fragments with an unambiguousdetermination of the fragments. The cascade is directly linked with the angular momentum of the fragments afterscission, which is one of the less precise and less understood properties. With the development of new simulation codes for theneutron evaporation and the -ray cascade like FIFRELIN or KEWPIE, systematic studies and comparisons with the large amountof experimental data resulting from double and triple gamma-ray coincidence analysis become possible. Preliminary results onthe gamma–ray cascades measured in the well produced Kr and Ba fragments and comparisons with FIFRELIN simulations willbe presented.

Abstract: International audience; Fission yields are essential for nuclear reactor studies (decay heat, fuel inventory…) and constitute also one of the main observables needed to improve our understanding of the fission process. The symmetric mass region is of particular interest due to various intriguing properties of the fission fragments already reported in the literature : inversion of the nuclear charge polarization, large width of the fission fragment kinetic energy distribution, strong change of the prompt neutron multiplicity, etc. Recently, measurements of fission yields and kinetic energy distributions in the symmetric mass region were achieved at the LOHENGRIN mass spectrometer of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). This experimental work is challenging due to the low counting rate and the appearance of contaminant masses, leading to pronounced components in the fission fragment kinetic energy distribution. Despite removing the undesirable contributions, the fission fragment kinetic energy distributions still show two components, indicating that the fission process could be modal. To go further and better characterize these components a comparison between our experimental data and Monte Carlo calculations (FIFRELIN code) simulating the de-excitation of the fission fragments for different fission channels will be presented and discussed.

The spectrometer separates the fission products according to their mass toion charge ratio and kinetic energy to ion charge ratio. Mass yields were obtained by means ofan ionisation chamber after separation by the spectrometer. Isotopic yields were determined byplacing two high-purity Germanium clover detectors downstream the spectrometer. An innovativeanalysis method developed for the Lohengrin spectrometer is presented, from which the final resultsare independent from the previous evaluations, which is usually not the case.

10. Emission probabilities of γ-rays from 238Np and their use for determination of the thermal neutron capture cross section of 237Np

Abstract: The relevant absolute gamma-ray emission probabilities from the beta-decay of (238)Np were measured by means of alpha- and gamma-spectroscopic techniques. We obtained values of (25.6+/-0.4)%, (8.9+/-0.2)% and (18.8+/-0.3)% for the 984.45-, 1025.87- and 1028.54-keV gamma-rays, respectively, in agreement with the previous measured ones. These intensities were used to deduce the thermal neutron capture cross section of (237)Np for which a value of (182.2+/-4.5)b is obtained higher by 11% than the recommended value.

Abstract: The study of nuclear ssion is encountering renewed interest with the development of GEN-IV reactor concepts, mostly working in the neutron fast energy domain. To support the fast reactor technologies, new high quality nuclear data are needed. For this reason, the future Neutrons For Sciences (NFS) installation, built in the framework of the SPIRAL2 project and producing high intensity neutron beams from hundreds of keV up to 40 MeV, will open new opportunities to characterise the actinide ssion fragments. To perform these measurements, the development of an experimental setup called FAL- STAFF has been undertaken. This novel apparatus is meant to provide a simultaneous characterisation of the complementary fragments in terms of mass, kinetic energy and to evaluate the average neutron multiplicity. To reach this goal the spectrometer must present a very good time, energy and space resolutions. The coupling of the Secondary Electron Detectors (SeD) detectors with an ionisation axial chamber seems ful ll these conditions. The ssion fragment velocities are measured employing two time-of- ight (SeD), sepa- rated by a distance of 50 cm. Those detectors combine a Mylar foil and a MWPC (multi wire proportional counter) to measure the arrival time and the position of the incoming particle. The fragment energies are measured by an axial ionisation chamber, CALIBER, placed after the SeD Stop detector. Moreover, the axial con guration of the chamber gives access to the energy loss pro le, which could be used to identify the light fragment nuclear charge. The FALSTAFF setup and the upgrade of the rst arm prototype with the new ionisa- tion chamber CALIBER will be presented. New tests are performed at CEA-Saclay and the combined measurement obtained from the SeD and the ionisation chamber will be shown. The performances of the experimental apparatus in terms of energy and mass resolution will be discussed.

Abstract: The MEGAPIE project aimed to design, build and operate a liquid metal spallation neutron target of about 1 MW beam power in the SINQ facility at the Paul Scherrer Institut (Villigen, Switzerland). This project is an important step in the roadmap towards the demonstration of the accelerator driven system (ADS) concept and high power liquid metal targets in general. Following the design phase, an experimental program was defined to provide a complete characterization of the facility by performing a “mapping” of the neutron flux at different points, from the center of the target to the beam lines. The neutronic performance of the target was studied using different experimental techniques with the goals of validating the Monte Carlo codes used in the design of the target; additionally, the performance was compared with the solid lead targets used before and after the MEGAPIE experiment.

13. 232Th, 233Pa, and 234U capture cross-section measurements in moderated neutron flux

Abstract: The Th–U cycle was studied through the evolution of a 100 μg 232Th sample irradiated in a moderated neutron flux of 8.01014 n/cm2/s, intensity close to that of a thermal molten salt reactor. After 43 days of irradiation and 6 months of cooling, a precise mass spectrometric analysis, using both TIMS and MC-ICP-MS techniques, was performed, according to a rigorous methodology. The measured thorium and uranium isotopic ratios in the final irradiated sample were then compared with integral simulations based on evaluated data; an overall good agreement was seen. Four important thermal neutron-capture cross-sections were also extracted from the measurements, 232Th (7.34±0.21 b), 233Pa (38.34±1.78 b), 234U (106.12±3.34 b), and 235U (98.15±11.24 b). Our 232Th and 235U results confirmed existing values whereas the cross-sections of 233Pa and 234U (both key parameters) have been redefined.

14. Measurement of the 210Po production induced by thermal neutron capture on 209Bi

Abstract: A measurement of the polonium production in a solid Bi target, placed in a high thermal neutron flux of 2.3 10 13 n/cm 2 /s, was performed. Two different activation methods, based on α and γ spectroscopy, were used to cross check the results. Values of (16.08 ± 1.8) mb and (18.4 ± 0.9) mb for the 210 P o (i.e. 210gs Bi) formation cross section were obtained and a recommended value of (17.9 ± 0.8) mb was proposed. Our results are in disagreement with adopted cross section values in the main nuclear data libraries, namely smaller by 25% for 210gs Bi. These new values will account for more precise evaluations of 210 P o formation in moderated spallation targets containing 209 Bi.

Abstract: In the framework of the Mini-INCA project, dedicated to the study of Minor Actinide transmutation process in high neutron fluxes, an α - and γ -spectroscopy station has been developed and installed at the High Flux Reactor of the Laue-Langevin Institut. This set-up allows short irradiations as well as long irradiations in a high quasi-thermal neutron flux and post-irradiation spectroscopy analysis. It is well suited to measure precisely, in reference to 59 Co cross-section, neutron capture cross-sections, for all the actinides, in the thermal energy region. The first measurements using this set-up were done on 243 Am and 242 Pu isotopes. Cross-section values, at E n = 0.025 eV , were found to be ( 81.8 ± 3.6 ) b for 243 Am and ( 22.5 ± 1.1 ) b for 242 Pu. These values differ from evaluated data libraries by a factor of 9% and 17%, respectively, but are compatible with the most recent measurements, validating by the way the experimental apparatus.

Abstract: The techniques used to produce a 177 m Lu (J π =23/2 − ,T 1/2 =160.4 days) target are described in this paper. Firstly, an isotopic separation of an enriched lutetium sample was used to reach a purity of 176 Lu close to 99.993%. Afterwards, the high neutron flux of the Grenoble Institut Laue-Langevin reactor was used to produce the 177 m Lu isomer by the 176 Lu(n,γ) reaction. Finally, a chemical separation was performed to extract 1013 nuclei of 177 m Lu . Thanks to this experiment, we have been able to estimate the destruction cross-section of the 177 m Lu .

Abstract: The gas turbine modular helium-cooled reactor (GT-MHR)1) is known probably as the best option for the maximum plutonium destruction in once-through cycle, even though the industrial fabrication of coated particle fuel still has to be proved. We perform detailed simulations along these lines by comparing different sets of data libraries in terms of keff eigenvalues, the length of the fuel cycle, neutronic characteristics and the evolution of fuel composition in particular. In all cases the same Monteburns code system2) is used making our results dependent only on the evaluated data tables. We show that in general the performance of GT-MHR is not considerably influenced by the choice of the data libraries employed. Nevertheless, a number of major differences among ENDF, 3) JENDL4) and JEF5) data files are identified and quantified in terms of the averaged one-group cross sections both for military (MPu) and civil (CPu) plutonium based fuel cycles.

Abstract: A new experimental installation has been recently commissioned at the High Flux Reactor of Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble (France). It gives access to high intensity neutron spectra from pure thermal (5.6 1014 n/s/cm2) to epithermal (2 1015 n/s/cm2). Several of low mass (10 µg) mono-isotopic targets of actinide elements are in the process of being irradiated and analyzed by a number of techniques, from nuclear spectroscopy to off-line mass spectrometry and innovative double-deposit fission micro-chambers.In the present paper we will present the first experiments carried out at the thermal neutron spectrum installation with 242Pu, 241-243Am samples.

Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment measures the neutrino mixing angle θ13 by detecting reactor ν¯e via inverse beta decay. The positron-neutron space and time coincidence allows for a sizable background rejection, nonetheless liquid scintillator detectors would profit from a positron/electron discrimination, if feasible in large detector, to suppress the remaining background. Standard particle identification, based on particle dependent time profile of photon emission in liquid scintillator, can not be used given the identical mass of the two particles. However, the positron annihilation is sometimes delayed by the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) metastable state formation, which induces a pulse shape distortion that could be used for positron identification. In this paper we report on the first observation of positronium formation in a large liquid scintillator detector based on pulse shape analysis of single events. The o-Ps formation fraction and its lifetime were measured, finding the values of 44% ± 12% (sys.) ± 5% (stat.) and 3.68ns ± 0.17ns (sys.) ± 0.15ns (stat.) respectively, in agreement with the results obtained with a dedicated positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy setup., National Science Foundation (U.S.), United States. Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment presents improved measurements of the neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ using the data collected in 467.90 live days from a detector positioned at an average distance of 1050 m from two reactor cores at the Chooz nuclear power plant. Several novel techniques have been developed to achieve significant reductions of the backgrounds and systematic uncertainties with respect to previous publications, whereas the efficiency of the $\bar\nu_{e}$ signal has increased. The value of $\theta_{13}$ is measured to be $\sin^{2}2\theta_{13} = 0.090 ^{+0.032}_{-0.029}$ from a fit to the observed energy spectrum. Deviations from the reactor $\bar\nu_{e}$ prediction observed above a prompt signal energy of 4 MeV and possible explanations are also reported. A consistent value of $\theta_{13}$ is obtained from a fit to the observed rate as a function of the reactor power independently of the spectrum shape and background estimation, demonstrating the robustness of the $\theta_{13}$ measurement despite the observed distortion., Comment: 44 pages, 25 figures. 22. Neutron flux characterisation of MEGAPIE target

Abstract: The neutronic performances of the MEGAPIE target will be studied using fission micro-chambers specially designed to stand the severe irradiation conditions of flux and temperature. The absolute neutron flux will be monitored on-line at different positions inside the target in order to studied its spatial and temporal variations. Together with the flux characterisation, actinide incineration potential of such target will be study through 241 Am and 237 Np isotopes. Prototype fission detectors and electronics have been successfully tested during the past three years at the High Flux Reactor of Laue Langevin Institute. The results of these tests are presented.

Abstract: communication - http://hal.in2p3.fr/in2p3-00797284; International audience; The Lohengrin mass spectrometer is one of the 40 instruments built around the reactor of the Institute Laue-Langevin (France) which delivers a very intense thermal neutron flux. Usually, Lohengrin was combined with a high-resolution ionization chamber in order to obtain good nuclear charge discrimination within a mass line, yielding an accurate isotopic yield determination. Unfortunately, this experimental procedure can only be applied for fission products with a nuclear charge less than about 42, i.e. in the light fission fragment region. Since 2008, a large collaboration has started with the aim of studying various fission aspects, mainly in the heavy fragment region. For that, a new experimental setup which allows isotopic identification by γ-ray spectrometry has been developed and validated. This technique was applied on the 239Pu(nth,f) reaction where about 65 fission product yields were measured with an uncertainty that has been reduced on average by a factor of 2 compared with what was that previously available in nuclear data libraries. The same γ-ray spectrometric technique is currently being applied to the study of the 233U(nth,f) reaction. Our aim is to deduce charge and mass distributions of the fission products and to complete the experimental data that exist mainly for light fission fragments. The measurement of 41 mass yields from the 241Am(2nth,f) reaction has been also performed. In addition to these activities on fission yield measurements, various new nanosecond isomers were discovered. Their presence can be revealed from a strong deformed ionic charge distribution compared to a 'normal' Gaussian shape. Finally, a new neutron long-counter detector designed to have a detection efficiency independent of the detected neutron energy has been built. Combining this neutron device with a Germanium detector and a beta-ray detector array allowed us to measure the beta-delayed neutron emission probability Pn of some important fission products for reactor applications.

Abstract: We present a search for Lorentz violation with 8249 candidate electron antineutrino events taken by the Double Chooz experiment in 227.9 live days of running. This analysis, featuring a search for a sidereal time dependence of the events, is the first test of Lorentz invariance using a reactor-based antineutrino source. No sidereal variation is present in the data and the disappearance results are consistent with sidereal time independent oscillations. Under the Standard-Model Extension (SME), we set the first limits on fourteen Lorentz violating coefficients associated with transitions between electron and tau flavor, and set two competitive limits associated with transitions between electron and muon flavor., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; (new version after referee's comments)

Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment has observed 8,249 candidate electron antineutrino events in 227.93 live days with 33.71 GW-ton-years (reactor power x detector mass x livetime) exposure using a 10.3 cubic meter fiducial volume detector located at 1050 m from the reactor cores of the Chooz nuclear power plant in France. The expectation in case of theta13 = 0 is 8,937 events. The deficit is interpreted as evidence of electron antineutrino disappearance. From a rate plus spectral shape analysis we find sin^2 2{\theta}13 = 0.109 \pm 0.030(stat) \pm 0.025(syst). The data exclude the no-oscillation hypothesis at 99.9% CL (3.1{\sigma}).

Abstract: The Double Chooz experiment presents an indication of reactor electron antineutrino disappearance consistent with neutrino oscillations. An observed-to-predicted ratio of events of 0.944±0.016(stat)±0.040(syst) was obtained in 101 days of running at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France, with two 4.25GWth reactors. The results were obtained from a single 10m3 fiducial volume detector located 1050 m from the two reactor cores. The reactor antineutrino flux prediction used the Bugey4 flux measurement after correction for differences in core composition. The deficit can be interpreted as an indication of a nonzero value of the still unmeasured neutrino mixing parameter sin⁡22θ13. Analyzing both the rate of the prompt positrons and their energy spectrum, we find sin⁡22θ13=0.086±0.041(stat)±0.030(syst), or, at 90% C.L., 0.017

Abstract: Some neutrons are emitted from fission products seconds to minutes after fission occurs. The knowledge of these delayed neutrons is essential in the field of nuclear energy. But the probabilities to emit such delayed neutrons (Pn) are not always well known. A summary of different databases and compilations of Pn values is presented to show these discrepancies and uncertainties. The usual methods used to determine these nuclear data are then reviewed with an emphasis on biases and systematic errors to be avoided. To measure precise Pn values, a new neutron LOng-counter with ENergy Independant Efficiency (LOENIE) has been built for the LOHENGRIN separator facility installed at Institut Laue Langevin (FRANCE). Its characteristics and first results obtained are presented.

Abstract: Several observed anomalies in neutrino oscillation data can be explained by a hypothetical fourth neutrino separated from the three standard neutrinos by a squared mass difference of a few eV^2. We show that this hypothesis can be tested with a PBq (ten kilocurie scale) 144Ce or 106Ru antineutrino beta-source deployed at the center of a large low background liquid scintillator detector. Abstract: Despite the huge number of fission yield data available in the different evaluated nuclear data libraries, such as JEFF-3.1.1, ENDF/B-VII.0, and JENDL-4.0, more accurate data are still needed both for nuclear energy applications and for our understanding of the fission process itself. It is within the framework of this that measurements on the recoil mass spectrometer Lohengrin (at the Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble, France) was undertaken, to determine isotopic yields for the heavy fission products from the ${}^{239}$Pu(n${}_{th}$,f) reaction. In order to do this, a new experimental method based on $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectrometry was developed and validated by comparing our results with those performed in the light mass region with completely different setups. Hence, about 65 fission product yields were measured with an uncertainty that has been reduced on average by a factor of 2 compared to that previously available in the nuclear data libraries. In addition, for some fission products, a strongly deformed ionic charge distribution compared to a normal Gaussian shape was found, which was interpreted as being caused by the presence of a nanosecond isomeric state. Finally, a nuclear charge polarization has been observed in agreement, with the one described on other close fissioning systems.

Abstract: The inelastic neutron acceleration cross section on the long-lived metastable state of {sup 177}Lu has been measured using a direct method. High-energy neutrons have been detected using a specially designed setup placed on a cold neutron beam extracted from the ORPHEE reactor in Saclay. The 146{+-}19 b inelastic neutron acceleration cross section in the ORPHEE cold neutron flux confirms the high cross section for this process on the {sup 177}Lu{sup m} isomer. The deviation from the 258{+-}58 b previously published obtained for a Maxwellian neutron flux at a 323 K temperature could be explained by the presence of a low energy resonance. Resonance parameters are deduced and discussed.

Abstract: Over the last 10 years, a vast campaign of measurements has been initiated to improve the precision of neutron data for the involved key nuclei (232Th, 233Pa and 233U) of the innovative Th−233U cycle. This latter might indeed provide cleaner nuclear energy than the present U-Pu one. New measurements of charge and mass distributions of the fission products have been achieved at the Lohengrin spectrometer of the Institute Laue-Langevin (ILL) during fall 2010 to complete the experimental data of 233U(n, f) that exist mainly for light fission fragments. That is why we performed measurements of mass and isotopic yields with a special focus on the heavy fission fragment part. Mass yields were measured by ion counting with an ionization chamber after separation by the Lohengrin spectrometer. Isotopic yields were derived from gamma spectrometry of mass-separated beams using HPGe clover detectors. This paper will present the results of these fission yield measurements along with details on the experimental set-up and the chosen analysis method.

Abstract: International audience; The (MEGAWatt Pilot Experiment) MEGAPIE target was successfully irradiated in 2006 at the SINQ facility of the Paul Scherrer Institut. During the irradiation a series of measurements to monitor the operation of the target, the thermal hydraulics behavior and the neutronic and nuclear aspects, has been performed. In the post-test analysis phase of the project, the data were analyzed and important information relevant to accelerator-driven systems (ADS) was gained, in particular: (i) from the operation of the target several recommendations concern the simplification of the system and the improved reliability; (ii) data from the thermal hydraulic measurements have offered the opportunity to validate the codes used in the design phase; (iii) the neutronic analysis confirm the high performance of a liquid metal target and the importance of the delayed neutron measurements in an ADS target; (iv) the nuclear measurements of the gas released gave the opportunity to validate the codes used during the design phase and provided indications for the operation. From the results in these different domains recommendations to further development of ADS and heavy liquid metal targets are discussed.

Abstract: We report new calculations of reactor antineutrino spectra including the latest information from nuclear databases and a detailed error budget. The first part of this work is the so-called ab initio approach where the total antineutrino spectrum is built from the sum of all beta-branches of all fission products predicted by an evolution code. Systematic effects and missing information in nuclear databases lead to final relative uncertainties in the 10 to 20% range. A prediction of the antineutrino spectrum associated with the fission of 238U is given based on this ab initio method. For the dominant isotopes 235U and 239Pu, we developed a more accurate approach combining information from nuclear databases and reference electron spectra associated with the fission of 235U, 239Pu and 241Pu, measured at ILL in the 80's. We show how the anchor point of the measured total beta-spectra can be used to suppress the uncertainty in nuclear databases while taking advantage of all the information they contain. We provide new reference antineutrino spectra for 235U, 239Pu and 241Pu isotopes in the 2-8 MeV range. While the shapes of the spectra and their uncertainties are comparable to that of the previous analysis of the ILL data, the normalization is shifted by about +3% on average. In the perspective of the re-analysis of past experiments and direct use of these results by upcoming oscillation experiments, we discuss the various sources of errors and their correlations as well as the corrections induced by off equilibrium effects., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: With the development of innovative nuclear systems and new generation neutron sources, the nuclear instrumentation should be adapted. Since several years, we developed microscopic fission chambers to study the transmutation of minor actinides in high thermal-neutron fluxes. The recent developments done to fulfill the drastic conditions of irradiations are described in this paper together with the feedback from the measurements. Two installations were used: the HFR of the ILL for its high thermal neutron flux and the MEGAPIE target which was the first liquid Pb-Bi spallation target in the MW range.

Abstract: Recently, new reactor antineutrino spectra have been provided for $^{235}\mathrm{U}$, $^{239}\mathrm{Pu}$, $^{241}\mathrm{Pu}$, and $^{238}\mathrm{U}$, increasing the mean flux by about 3%. To a good approximation, this reevaluation applies to all reactor neutrino experiments. The synthesis of published experiments at reactor-detector distances $l100\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{m}$ leads to a ratio of observed event rate to predicted rate of $0.976\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.024$. With our new flux evaluation, this ratio shifts to $0.943\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.023$, leading to a deviation from unity at 98.6% C.L. which we call the reactor antineutrino anomaly. The compatibility of our results with the existence of a fourth nonstandard neutrino state driving neutrino oscillations at short distances is discussed. The combined analysis of reactor data, gallium solar neutrino calibration experiments, and MiniBooNE-$\ensuremath{\nu}$ data disfavors the no-oscillation hypothesis at 99.8% C.L. The oscillation parameters are such that $|\ensuremath{\Delta}{m}_{\mathrm{new}}^{2}|g1.5\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{eV}}^{2}$ (95%) and ${sin }^{2}(2{\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\mathrm{new}})=0.14\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08$ (95%). Constraints on the ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{13}$ neutrino mixing angle are revised.

Abstract: The major advances achieved over the last decades in the understanding of fundamental neutrino physics allow us to apply the detection of reactor antineutrino signals to automatic and nonintrusive nuclear power plant surveys. Here, we present the NUCIFER experiment, a 1-ton Gd-doped liquid scintillator detector to be installed a few 10 m from a reactor core for measurements of its thermal power and plutonium (Pu) content. The design of such a small volume detector has been focused on high detection efficiency (~ 50% and good background rejection. Detailed simulations of reactor-emitted antineutrino spectrum and detector response have been developed and used to calculate the NUCIFER sensitivity to illicit retrieval of Pu from the core. These results have been presented in October 2008 to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has expressed its interest in the potentialities of this detector as a new safeguard tool.

Two installations were used: the HFR of the ILL for its highest thermal neutron flux of the world and the MEGAPIE target which was the first 1 MW liquid Pb-Bi spallation target in the world.

Abstract: The MEGAPIE project, a 1-MW liquid lead-bismuth spallation target, has operated successfully at Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. It constitutes the first step in demonstrating the feasibility of heavy liquid-metal target technologies for accelerator driven systems. With the 4-month irradiation phase now concluded, the experiment has provided unique data for a better understanding of the behavior of the target under realistic irradiation conditions. A complex neutron detector, which has journeyed throughout all of the irradiation inside the target and close to the proton beam, has been extracted along with metallic foil monitors. These have provided a measure of the total inner neutron flux. This paper aims to present the current developments in this analysis and in the Monte Carlo simulations that have been performed.

Abstract: Mass yields and kinetic energy distribution functions for heavy mass fission products from thermal neutron induced fission of 235U and 239Pu have been measured at the spectrometer Lohengrin at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble. In addition to these measurements where an ionization chamber was used for the mass identification, we also performed gamma spectrometry to quantify the isotopic and isomeric yields. This setup using Ge-detectors has been commissioned with the system 241Pu(nth,f). In order to extend the data to less abundant fission products, a proportional counter for beta detection has been constructed, allowing to reduce the background by beta-gamma coincidences.

Abstract: In the framework of the Neutronic and Nuclear Assessment Task Group of the MEGAPIE experiment we measured the delayed neutron (DN) flux at the top of the target. The measurement was proposed mainly for radioprotection purposes since the DN flux at the top of the target has been estimated to be of the same order of magnitude as the prompt neutron flux. Given the strong model-dependence of DN predictions, the measurement of DN contribution to the total neutron activity at the top of the target was thus desired. Moreover, this measurement is complementary to the DN experiments performed at PNPI (Gatchina) on solid lead and bismuth targets. The DN measurement at MEGAPIE was performed during the start-up phase of the target. Abstract: The MEGAPIE project is a key experiment on the road to Accelerator Driven Systems and it provides the scientific community with unique data on the behavior of a liquid lead-bismuth spallation target under realistic and long term irradiation conditions. The neutronic of such target is of course of prime importance when considering its final destination as an intense neutron source. This is the motivation to characterize the inside neutron flux of the target in operation. A complex detector, made of 8 micro fission-chambers, has been built and installed in the core of the target, few tens of centimeters from the proton/Pb-Bi interaction zone. This detector is designed to measure the absolute neutron flux inside the target, to give its spatial distribution and to correlate its temporal variations with the beam intensity. 47. Indirect and direct measurement of thermal neutron acceleration by inelastic scattering on the 177Lu isomer

Abstract: When neutrons interact with isomers these last can be de-excited. In such a reaction the outgoing neutron has an energy greater than the ingoing one. This process is referred as Inelastic Neutron Acceleration or Super- elastic Scattering. Up to now this process was observed for only two nucleus, 152m Eu and 180m Hf by measuring the number of fast neutron produced by isomeric targets irradiated with thermal neutrons. In these works the energies of the accelerated neutrons were not measured. This report presents an indirect measurement of inelastic neutron acceleration on 177m Lu, based on the burn-up and the radiative capture cross sections measurements. Since at thermal energies the inelastic scattering and the radiative capture are the only processes that contribute to the isomer burn-up, the inelastic cross section can be deduced from the difference between the two measured quantities. Applying this method for the 177 Lu isomer with different neutron fluxes we obtained a value of 258 (58) barns, and determined that there is no integral resonance for this process. In addition the radiative capture cross section on 177g Lu was measured with a much better accuracy than the accepted value. Since the acceleration cross section is quite high a direct measurement of this process was undertaken, sending thermal neutrons and measuring the fast neutrons. The main goal now is to measure the outgoing neutron energies in order to identify the neutron transitions in the exit channel. In particular the K conservation question can be addressed by such a measurement.

Abstract: Core-collapse supernovae produce an intense burst of electron antineutrinos in the few-tens-of-MeV range. Several Large Liquid Scintillator-based Detectors (LLSD) are currently operated worldwide, being very effective for low energy antineutrino detection through the Inverse Beta Decay (IBD) process. In this article, we develop a procedure for the prompt extraction of the supernova location by revisiting the details of IBD kinematics over the broad energy range of supernova neutrinos. Combining all current scintillator-based detector, we show that one can locate a canonical supernova at 10 kpc with an accuracy of 45 degrees (68% C.L.). After the addition of the next generation of scintillator-based detectors, the accuracy could reach 12 degrees (68% C.L.), therefore reaching the performances of the large water Cerenkov neutrino detectors. We also discuss a possible improvement of the SuperNova Early Warning System (SNEWS) inter-experiment network with the implementation of a directionality information in each experiment. Abstract: The neutron burnup cross section ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{burnup}}^{m}$ on the long-lived metastable state of $^{177}\mathrm{Lu}$ has been measured from a specially designed isomeric target. The Maxwellian averaged cross section obtained for this reaction on $^{177}\mathrm{Lu}$${}^{m}({J}^{\ensuremath{\pi}}=23/{2}^{\ensuremath{-}})$ is ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{\mathrm{burnup}}^{m}=626\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}45$ b at the reactor temperature $T=323$ K. The difference between the burnup cross section and the previously measured capture cross section ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{n,\ensuremath{\gamma}}$ clearly shows a possible existence of $^{177}\mathrm{Lu}$${}^{m}$ deexcitation via ($n,{n}^{'}$) inelastic neutron acceleration channels. The results are interpreted in terms of a statistical approach using parameters from a deformed optical potential calculation.

Abstract: A comprehensive theoretical model is proposed to explain the functioning of fission chambers operated in current mode, even in very high neutron fluxes. The calibration curves are calculated as a function of basic physical parameters as fission rate, gas pressure and geometry of the chambers. The output current at saturation is precisely calculated, as well as the maximum voltage to be applied in order to avoid avalanche phenomena. The electric field distortion due to the space charge phenomena is also estimated. Within this model, the characteristic responses of fission chambers are correctly reproduced, in agreement with the experience feedback obtained at the ILL/Grenoble High-Flux Reactor.
