We present ALMA observations of cold dust and molecular gas in four high-luminosity, heavily reddened (A$_{\rm{V}} \sim 2.5-6$ mag) Type 1 quasars at $z\sim2.5$ with virial M$_{\rm{BH}} \sim 10^{10}$M$_\odot$, to test whether dusty, massive quasars represent the evolutionary link between submillimetre bright galaxies (SMGs) and unobscured quasars. All four quasars are detected in both the dust continuum and in the $^{12}$CO(3-2) line. The mean dust mass is 6$\times$10$^{8}$M$_\odot$ assuming a typical high redshift quasar spectral energy distribution (T=41K, $\beta$=1.95 or T=47K, $\beta$=1.6). The implied star formation rates are very high - $\gtrsim$1000 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ in all cases. Gas masses estimated from the CO line luminosities cover $\sim$1-5$\times10^{10}$($\alpha_{\rm{CO}} / 0.8$)M$_\odot$ and the gas depletion timescales are very short - $\sim5-20$Myr. A range of gas-to-dust ratios is observed in the sample. We resolve the molecular gas in one quasar - ULASJ2315$+$0143 ($z=2.561$) - which shows a strong velocity gradient over $\sim$20 kpc. The velocity field is consistent with a rotationally supported gas disk but other scenarios, e.g. mergers, cannot be ruled out at the current resolution of these data. In another quasar - ULASJ1234+0907 ($z=2.503$) - we detected molecular line emission from two millimetre bright galaxies within 200 kpc of the quasar, suggesting that this quasar resides in a significant over-density. The high detection rate of both cold dust and molecular gas in these sources, suggests that reddened quasars could correspond to an early phase in massive galaxy formation associated with large gas reservoirs and significant star formation., Comment: MNRAS Accepted; Very minor changes to match accepted version

We present near-infrared integral-field spectroscopic observations targeting H$\alpha$ in eight sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs) at $z$=1.3-2.5 using VLT/SINFONI, obtaining significant detections for six of them. The star formation rates derived from the H$\alpha$ emission are $\sim$100 M$_\odot$yr$^{-1}$, which account for only $\sim$ 20-30\% of the infrared-derived values, thus suggesting that these systems are very dusty. Two of these systems present [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios indicative of the presence of an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). We mapped the spatial distribution and kinematics of the star forming regions in these galaxies on kpc-scales. In general, the H$\alpha$ morphologies tend to be highly irregular and/or clumpy, showing spatial extents of $\sim$3-11~kpc. We find evidence for significant spatial offsets, of $\sim$0.1-0.4$"$ or 1.2-3.4 kpc, between the H$\alpha$ and the continuum emission in three of the sources. Performing a kinemetry analysis we conclude that the majority of the sample is not consistent with disk-like rotation-dominated kinematics. Instead, they tend to show irregular and/or clumpy and turbulent velocity and velocity dispersion fields. This can be interpreted as evidence for scenario in which these extreme star formation episodes are triggered by galaxy-galaxy interactions and major mergers. We study the 850um emission in X-ray selected AGN in the 2 sq-deg COSMOS field using new data from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We find 19 850um bright X-ray AGN in a high-sensitivity region covering 0.89 sq-deg with flux densities of S850=4-10 mJy. The 19 AGN span the full range in redshift and hard X-ray luminosity covered by the sample - 0.71 X-ray AGN - S850=0.71+/-0.08mJy. We explore trends in the stacked 850um flux densities with redshift, finding no evolution in the average cold dust emission over the redshift range probed. For Type 1 AGN, there is no significant correlation between the stacked 850um flux and hard X-ray luminosity. However, in Type 2 AGN the stacked submm flux is a factor of 2 higher at high luminosities. When averaging over all X-ray luminosities, no significant differences are found in the stacked submm fluxes of Type 1 and Type 2 AGN as well as AGN separated on the basis of X-ray hardness ratios and optical-to-infrared colours. However, at log10(LX) >44.4, dependences in average submm flux on the optical-to-infrared colours become more pronounced. We argue that these high luminosity AGN represent a transition from a secular to a merger-driven evolutionary phase where the star formation rates and accretion luminosities are more tightly coupled. Stacked AGN 850um fluxes are compared to the stacked fluxes of a mass-matched sample of K-band selected non-AGN galaxies. We find that at 10.5

We present a new population of z>2 dust-reddened, Type 1 quasars with 0.510^{13}L_0), high-redshift dusty quasars to 38. There is no evidence for reddened quasars having significantly different H$\alpha$ equivalent widths relative to unobscured quasars. The average black-hole masses (~10^9-10^10 M_0) and bolometric luminosities (~10^{47} erg/s) are comparable to the most luminous unobscured quasars at the same redshift, but with a tail extending to very high luminosities of ~10^{48} erg/s. Sixty-six per cent of the reddened quasars are detected at $>3\sigma$ at 22um by WISE. The average 6um rest-frame luminosity is log10(L6um/erg/s)=47.1+/-0.4, making the objects among the mid-infrared brightest AGN currently known. The extinction-corrected space-density estimate now extends over three magnitudes (-30 < M_i < -27) and demonstrates that the reddened quasar luminosity function is significantly flatter than that of the unobscured quasar population at z=2-3. At the brightest magnitudes, M_i < -29, the space density of our dust-reddened population exceeds that of unobscured quasars. A model where the probability that a quasar becomes dust-reddened increases at high luminosity is consistent with the observations and such a dependence could be explained by an increase in luminosity and extinction during AGN-fuelling phases. The properties of our obscured Type 1 quasars are distinct from the heavily obscured, Compton-thick AGN that have been identified at much fainter luminosities and we conclude that they likely correspond to a brief evolutionary phase in massive galaxy formation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures (+ 2 appendices), Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present new [CI](1-0) and 12CO(4-3) Plateau de Bure Interferometer observations of five Sub-Millimeter Galaxies (SMGs) and combine these with all available [CI](1-0) literature detections in SMGs to probe the gas distribution within a sample of 14 systems. We explore the [CI](1-0) properties of the SMG population, particularly investigating the ratio of the [CI](1-0) luminosity to various 12CO transition and far-infrared luminosities. We find that the SMGs with new observations extend the spread of L[CI](1-0)/LFIR to much higher values than found before, with our complete sample providing a good representation of the diverse z>2 SMG population. We compare the line ratios to the outputs of photodissociation region (PDR) models to constrain the average density (n) and radiation field (in terms of the local field value, G0) of the SMGs. We find the SMGs are most comparable to local ULIRGs in G0 and n, however a significant tail of 5 of the 14 SMGs are likely best compared to less compact, local starburst galaxies, providing new evidence that many SMGs have extended star formation distributions and are therefore not simply scaled up versions of local ULIRGs. We explore the limitations of using simple PDR models to understand [CI], which may be concomitant with the bulk H2 mass rather than PDR-distributed. We therefore also assess [CI] as a tracer of H2, finding that for our sample SMGs, the H2 masses derived from [CI] are often consistent with those determined from low excitation 12CO. We conclude that [CI] observations provide a useful tool to probe the bulk gas and gas processes occurring within merging SMGs, however more detailed, resolved observations are required to fully exploit [CI] as a diagnostic., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present two-dimensional, integral field spectroscopy covering the rest-frame wavelengths of strong optical emission lines in nine sub-mm-luminous galaxies (SMGs) at 2.0

We present integral field spectroscopy observations, covering the [O III]4959,5007 emission-line doublet of eight high-redshift (z=1.4-3.4) ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) that host Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) activity, including known sub-millimetre luminous galaxies (SMGs). The targets have moderate radio luminosities that are typical of high-redshift ULIRGs (L(1.4GHz)=10^(24)-10^(25)W/Hz) and therefore are not radio-loud AGN. We de-couple kinematic components due to the galaxy dynamics and mergers from those due to outflows. We find evidence in the four most luminous systems (L([O III])>~10^(43)erg/s) for the signatures of large-scale energetic outflows: extremely broad [O III] emission (FWHM ~ 700-1400km/s) across ~4-15kpc, with high velocity offsets from the systemic redshifts (up to ~850km/s). The four less luminous systems have lower quality data displaying weaker evidence for spatially extended outflows. We estimate that these outflows are potentially depositing energy into their host galaxies at considerable rates (~10^(43)-10^(45)erg/s); however, due to the lack of constraints on the density of the outflowing material and the structure of the outflow, these estimates should be taken as illustrative only. Based on the measured maximum velocities (v(max)~400-1400km/s) the outflows observed are likely to unbind some fraction of the gas from their host galaxies, but are unlikely to completely remove gas from the galaxy haloes. By using a combination of energetic arguments and a comparison to ULIRGs without clear evidence for AGN activity, we show that the AGN activity could be the dominant power source for driving all of the observed outflows, although star formation may also play a significant role in some of the sources., Comment: 25 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present the results from a survey for 12CO emission in 40 luminous sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs), with 850um fluxes of S850 = 4 - 20 mJy, conducted with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We detect 12CO emission in 32 SMGs at z~1.2 - 4.1, including 16 SMGs not previously published. Using multiple 12CO line (J_up =2 - 7) observations, we derive a median spectral line energy distribution for luminous SMGs and use this to estimate a mean gas mass of (5.3 +/- 1.0) \times 10^10 Msun. We report the discovery of a fundamental relationship between 12CO FWHM and 12CO line luminosity in high-redshift starbursts, which we interpret as a natural consequence of the baryon-dominated dynamics within the regions probed by our observations. We use far-infrared luminosities to assess the star-formation efficiency in our SMGs, finding a steepening of the L'CO-LFIR relation as a function of increasing 12CO J_up transition. We derive dynamical masses and molecular gas masses, and use these to determine the redshift evolution of the gas content of SMGs, finding that they do not appear to be significantly more gas rich than less vigorously star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. Finally, we collate X-ray observations, and study the interdependence of gas and dynamical properties of SMGs with their AGN activity and supermassive black hole masses (MBH), finding that SMGs lie significantly below the local M_BH-sigma relation. We conclude that SMGs represent a class of massive, gas-rich ultraluminous galaxies with somewhat heterogeneous properties, ranging from starbursting disc-like systems with L~10^12 L_sun, to the most highly star-forming mergers in the Universe., Comment: 47 Pages, 50 figures. We present a spectroscopic catalogue of 40 luminous starburst galaxies at z=0.7--1.7 (median z=1.3). 19 of these are submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and 21 are submillimetre-faint radio galaxies (SFRGs). This sample helps to fill in the redshift desert at z=1.2--1.7 in previous studies as well as probing a lower luminosity population of galaxies. Radio fluxes are used to determine star-formation rates for our sample which range from around 50 to 500 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ and are generally lower than those in z$\sim$2 SMGs. We identify nebular [OII] 3727 emission in the rest-UV spectra and use the linewidths to show that SMGs and SFRGs in our sample have larger linewidths and therefore dynamical masses than optically selected star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. The linewidths are indistinguishable from those measured in the z$\sim$2 SMG populations suggesting little evolution in the dynamical masses of the galaxies between redshift 1--2. [NeV] and [NeIII] emission lines are identified in a subset of the spectra indicating the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). In addition, a host of interstellar absorption lines corresponding to transitions of MgII and FeII ions are also detected. These features show up prominently in composite spectra and we use these composites to demonstrate that the absorption lines are present at an average blueshift of $-240\pm$50 kms$^{-1}$ relative to the systemic velocities of the galaxies derived from [OII]. We present near-infrared spectroscopic observations from VLT ISAAC of thirteen 250\mu m-luminous galaxies in the CDF-S, seven of which have confirmed redshifts which average to = 2.0 \pm 0.4. Another two sources of the 13 have tentative z > 1 identifications. Eight of the nine redshifts were identified with H{\alpha} detection in H- and K-bands, three of which are confirmed redshifts from previous spectroscopic surveys. We use their near-IR spectra to measure H{\alpha} line widths and luminosities, which average to 415 \pm 20 km/s and 3 \times 10^35 W (implying SFR(H{\alpha})~200 M_\odot /yr), both similar to the H{\alpha} properties of SMGs. Just like SMGs, 250 \mu m-luminous galaxies have large H{\alpha} to far-infrared (FIR) extinction factors such that the H{\alpha} SFRs underestimate the FIR SFRs by ~8-80 times. Far-infrared photometric points from observed 24\mu m through 870\mu m are used to constrain the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) even though uncertainty caused by FIR confusion in the BLAST bands is significant. The population has a mean dust temperature of Td = 52 \pm 6 K, emissivity {\beta} = 1.73 \pm 0.13, and FIR luminosity LFIR = 3 \times 10^13 L_\odot. Although selection at 250\mu m allows for the detection of much hotter dust dominated HyLIRGs than SMG selection (at 850\mu m), we do not find any >60 K 'hot-dust' HyLIRGs. We have shown that near-infrared spectroscopy combined with good photometric redshifts is an efficient way to spectroscopically identify and characterise these rare, extreme systems, hundreds of which are being discovered by the newest generation of IR observatories including the Herschel Space Observatory., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures; Revised with minor corrections from the referee, MNRAS
