This study was conducted to investigate the perceptions of parents of children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) regarding the support and services provided to them and their children. One hundred fifty-eight parents of children who are DHH were surveyed. The survey questions focused on five areas: early identification, hearing technology, communication, education, and social support. The results indicated that: (1) a variety of services are available and have been received by some parents; (2) parents reported an average level of satisfaction towards the services and supports received; and (3) all services listed are needed. Additionally, parents identified problems and offered solutions to improve the services and support for their children. The need for more research in the KSA is noted in order to obtain a more in-depth understanding of parents' perceptions and needs.

This qualitative study aims to explore the core leadership practices of school principals in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Given the exploratory nature of this study, a qualitative research design methodology was employed through which an in-depth, multi-perspective study of the practices of four secondary school principals was carried out. Employing a semi-structured interview protocol developed specifically for this study, data was collected from the principals and four teachers and four parents from each of the participating schools. The findings of the data analysis revealed that the principals demonstrated a repertoire of five core practices, namely, setting achievement goals, developing teachers, building strong relationships with parents, focusing on academic excellence and developing school climate. The principals enacted these core practices in a variety of ways. These core practices are discussed in detail along with the important implications for further research and practice.

Simple Summary: A well-designed conservation strategy for natural reserves cannot be accomplished without providing the necessary information regarding the abundance and density of animal fauna in respect to seasonal variation and the floral components. Using active and passive survey methods in some sites representing all of the ecosystems in the King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve (KARR), Saudi Arabia, the first biodiversity survey was conducted during winter (January–February), spring (May), summer (August–September), and autumn (October–November) of the year 2023. The results of this survey can be considered as baseline data for the KARR (to be compared spatiotemporally with further surveys), and it reflected the abundance and density (in term of Simpson's index) of some species of scorpions, spiders, centipedes, malacostraca, and branchiopods, among other groups of fauna and flora. The obtained baseline data will help to monitor the threshold of any threats. This study strongly recommends continuing routine seasonal surveys (to support the baseline data), in parallel with other ecological studies aimed to assess the interactions between the biotic and abiotic components of the KARR ecosystem. The biodiversity of invertebrate animals is largely affected by climatic changes. This study evaluates the seasonal abundance and diversity of non-insect arthropods in the King Abdulaziz Royal Reserve (KARR), Saudi Arabia, over four collection periods (summer, autumn, winter, and spring) during 2023. Sampling was conducted across multiple sites in the reserve using both active (manual collection and active surveying for the diurnal species) and passive (pitfall traps and malaise traps for the nocturnal species) methods. A total of 586 non-insect arthropod specimens were collected, representing four classes: Arachnida, Chilopoda, Branchiopoda, and Malacostraca. The results show that the most abundant species was the jumping spider Plexippus paykulli, which dominated collections across two seasons, with a peak abundance of 50.7% in late summer. Seasonal variations in non-insect arthropod diversity were observed, with a lower diversity recorded during January–March (4 species, and this may be attributed to this period revealing the lowest temperature reading recorded during the study period) and higher diversity in August–September (end of summer) and October–November (mid of autumn), with 14 species. Scorpions, particularly species from the families Buthidae and Scorpionidae, were common during the summer months, while solifuges and centipedes showed sporadic occurrences across seasons. These findings align with the results for arthropod distribution in arid regions, with temperature and resource availability as key drivers of biodiversity in desert environments because of their direct effects on the biochemical processes of these creatures. This study contributes valuable baseline data on the non-insect arthropod fauna of the KARR. Assessing vocabulary skills is a crucial aspect of educational interventions for students with disabilities, as it directly influences their academic progress, overall communication abilities, and quality of life. This study aims to explore professionals' perceptions regarding the vocabulary assessments used with students with disabilities. By gaining insights into their perspectives and experiences, we can improve the assessment process and enhance instructional practices, ultimately contributing to a better Quality of Life (QoL) for these students. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire completed by 375 professionals working in the field of special education. The findings indicate that professionals in the private sector express higher satisfaction levels and demonstrate better proficiency in applying vocabulary assessment tools compared to those in the public sector. Furthermore, the results reveal that professionals specializing in speech and language disorders report higher satisfaction levels compared to professionals in other specialized areas. Asymmetric cell division in Saccharomyces cerevisiae involves class V myosin-dependent transport of organelles along the polarised actin cytoskeleton to the emerging bud. Vac17 is the vacuole/lysosome-specific myosin receptor. Its timely breakdown terminates transport and results in the proper positioning of vacuoles in the bud. Vac17 breakdown is controlled by the budconcentrated p21-activated kinase Cla4, and the E3-ubiquitin ligase Dma1. We found that the spindle position checkpoint kinase Kin4 and, to a lesser extent, its paralog Frk1 contribute to successful vacuole transport by preventing the premature breakdown of Vac17 by Cla4 and Dma1. Furthermore, Kin4 and Cla4 contribute to the regulation of peroxisome transport. We conclude that Kin4 antagonises the Cla4/Dma1 pathway to coordinate spatiotemporal regulation of organelle transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cigarette smoking is the most common form of tobacco use worldwide. With the frequent introduction of new dental materials, the effect of smoking on their optical properties such as long term color stability, should to be thoroughly investigated. Objective: This in-vitro study aims to investigate the effect of smoking on the optical properties of contemporary dental ceramics used currently for restoration of teeth. Methods: Five different materials in two shades (B1 and C1) were used with 15 samples from each pressable lithium disilicate (Emax), layered lithium disilicate (Lmax), porcelain fused to metal (PFM), monolithic zirconia (MZr) and layered zirconia (LZr) were used (n = 75). The samples were exposed to conventional cigarette smoke and color stability was assessed at four different time intervals i.e., baseline, 1 week, 1 month and 6 months. CIELAB color space (CIE L*a*b*) values were used to evaluate the color difference (ΔE). A one-way analysis of variance (Anova) was used for statistical analysis of ΔE. Significant P-value was kept as <0.05, followed by Tukey post-hoc test. Results: All test materials demonstrated significant color differences (ΔE) after exposure to cigarette smoke (p < 0.05). For shade B1, the highest change in shade ΔE 17.02 was exhibited by Lmax, whereas the least change in shade was exhibited by Emax followed by PFM at values of ΔE 10.11 and 11.2 respectively. For shade C1, the highest change (11.47) in shade at 6 months was demonstrated by MZr, whereas lowest values of ΔE were exhibited by Emax (7.52). Conclusions: Traditional smoking causes significant change in shade of dental ceramics which can affect the esthetics of the patients. All material samples tested showed the values of ΔE > 3.3 which is higher than the acceptable range. Lowest color change was observed in Emax and PFM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Rare disease Background: Osteochondroma is the most common bone tumor and is a surface bone lesion that includes cortical and medullary bone with a hyaline cartilage cap. Benign osteochondroma is a common tumor in children that may be asymptomatic but can cause pain and limit joint movement when arising in a joint. This report describes the presentation, diagnosis, and management of an intra-articular osteochondroma of the right elbow joint in an 8-year-old boy. Case Report: An 8-year-old boy experienced persistent right elbow pain and limited motion, which were unresponsive to conservative measures. Examination revealed a firm swelling in the right cubital fossa. Radiographic and advanced imaging confirmed an osteochondroma originating from the capitellum and trochlea. Surgical exploration via a lateral approach and capsulotomy excised a lobulated intra-articular mass (5×2×1.5 cm). Histopathology showed a hyaline cartilage cap with typical chondrocytes and endochondral ossification, and normal fatty marrow and hematopoietic elements in the stroma. The procedure restored normal elbow function. This case is the first documented instance of an elbow joint intra-articular osteochondroma. Conclusions: This report has highlighted the importance of surgical removal and histopathology in the diagnosis of this common bone lesion to exclude the differential diagnoses of intra-articular masses that include a foreign body, enchondroma, chondroblastoma, periosteal chondroma, chondromyxoid fibroma, or malignant chondrosarcoma. Background: The relationship between laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is intricate. Hiatal hernia repair or gastropexy can have an impact on postoperative GERD. Aim: To assess the effect of the repair of an accidentally discovered HH and/or gastropexy on the development of de novo postoperative GERD symptoms after LSG. Methods: This retrospective study included all obese patients who underwent LSG at our hospital from January 2018 to June 2022. The data retrieved from patients' files comprised demographic and clinical data, including BMI, GERD symptoms, and comorbidities. Hiatal hernias, surgical technique, gastropexy, duration, and intraoperative complications were recorded. Postoperative data included early and late postoperative complications, weight loss, de novo GERD, and medication use. Results: The study included 253 patients, 89 males (35.2%) and 164 females (64.8%), with a mean age of 33.3± 10.04 years. De novo GERD was detected in 94 individuals (37.15%). HH was accidentally found and repaired in 29 patients (11.5%). Only 10.3% of LSG and HH repair patients had de novo GERD symptoms, compared to 40.6% of non-HH patients. 149 patients (58.9%) had gastropexy with LSG. Postoperative de novo GERD symptoms were comparable for LSG with gastropexy (40.5%) and LSG alone (40.9%). Conclusion: After one year, concurrent hiatal hernia repair and LSG seem to be safe and beneficial in lowering postoperative de novo GERD symptoms. The inclusion of gastropexy with LSG had no significant impact on postoperative de novo GERD. Both HH repair and gastropexy lengthened the operation but did not increase its complications. Different phytochemicals from various plant species exhibit promising medicinal properties against cancer. Juniperus phoenicea is a plant species that has been found to present medicinal properties. Herein, crude extract and fractions of J. phoenicea were examined to determine its anticancer properties against several cancer cells. The active fraction was chosen to assess its activity on cell cycle progression and apoptosis induction by annexin and propidium iodide (PI) biomarkers. Further, phytochemical screening for possible contents of active fraction using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis was conducted. It was demonstrated that cell proliferation was suppressed, and the MCF-7 cell line was the most sensitive to J. phoenicea chloroform fraction (JPCF), with the IC50 values of 24.5 μg/mL. The anti-proliferation activity of JPCF in MCF-7 cells was linked to the aggregation of cells in the G1 phase, increases in early and late apoptosis as well as necrotic cell death. Contents analysis of JPCF using GC-MS analysis identified 3-methyl-5-(2′,6′,6′-trimethylcyclohex-1′-enyl)-1-penten-3-ol (16.5%), methyl 8-oxooctanoate (15.61%), cubenol (13.48%), and 7-oxabicyclo [2.2.1] heptane (12.14%) as major constituents. Our present study provides clear evidence that J. phoenicea can inhibit cell proliferation, trigger cell cycle arrest, and induce apoptosis in tested cancer cells.
