Photochromic inks have shown disadvantages, such as poor durability and high cost. Self-healable hydrogels have shown photostability and durability. Herein, a viologen-based covalent polymer was printed onto a paper surface toward the development of a multi-stimuli responsive chromogenic sheet with thermochromic, photochromic, and vapochromic properties. Viologen polymer was created by polymerizing a dialdehyde-based viologen with a hydroxyl-bearing dihydrazide in an acidic aqueous medium. The viologen polymer was well immobilized as a colorimetric agent into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/tricarboxy cellulose (TCC)-based self-healable hydrogel. The viologen/hydrogel nanocomposite films were applied onto a paper surface. The coloration measurements showed that when exposed to ultraviolet light, the orange layer printed on the paper surface switched to green. The photochromic film was used to develop anti-counterfeiting prints using the organic hydrogel composed of a PVA/TCC composite and a viologen polymer. Reversible photochromism with strong photostability was observed when the printed papers were exposed to UV irradiation. A detection limit was monitored in the range of 0.5–300 ppm for NH3(aq). Smart colorimetric packaging has been an important method to protect human health from external hazardous agents. However, the currently available colorimetric detectors use synthetic dye probes, which are costly, toxic, difficult to prepare, and non-biodegradable. Herein, an environmentally friendly cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)-supported polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibrous membrane was developed for the colorimetric monitoring of food spoilage. Anthocyanidin (ACY) is a naturally occurring spectroscopic probe that was isolated from pomegranate (Punica granatum L.). By encapsulating the anthocyanin probe in electrospun polyvinyl alcohol fibers in the presence of a mordant (M), M/ACY nanoparticles were generated. After exposure to rotten shrimp, an investigation on the colorimetric changes from purple to green for the smart nanofibrous fabric was conducted using the coloration parameters and absorbance spectra. In response to increasing the length of exposure to rotten shrimp, the absorption spectra of the anthocyanin-encapsulated nanofibrous membrane showed a wavelength blueshift from 580 nm to 412 nm. CNC displayed a diameter of 12–17 nm. The nanoparticle diameter of M/ACY was monitored in the range of 8–13 nm, and the nanofiber diameter was shown in the range of 70–135 nm. Calcium phosphate hydroxyapatite (HA) was successfully incorporated into poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate)/gelatin (PHBV/GEL) nanofibers through an electrospinning process in a hexafluoroisopropanol solvent (HFIP). The PHBV/GEL was electrospun and collected using a rotating metallic network to develop highly ordered nonwoven mats. The effects of HA addition on the morphologies of the obtained fibers were investigated using SEM. The average diameter of the fibers ranged around 700–900 nm, depending on the HA content. From a mechanical perspective, the addition of HA nanoparticles showed variations in tensile strength and elastic modulus values. The lowest tensile strength measured for neat PHBV/GEL was 0.37 ± 0.08 MPa with an elastic modulus of 9.45 ± 0.65 MPa, whereas the highest tensile strength reported for 5% HA‐loaded PHBV/GEL mats was 1.1 ± 0.4 MPa with an elastic modulus of 16.9 ± 0.39 MPa. In addition, cell viability, and mineral deposition were also studied using MC3T3‐E1 pre‐osteoblasts. The in vitro experiment results showed that the HA loaded‐PHBV/GEL mats provide optimal conditions for cell growth and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3‐E1 cells. This study reveals the potential of PHBV/GEL/HA matrices in the development of novel guided bone‐regeneration (GBR) membranes for orthopedic and craniomaxillofacial surgery, by providing favorable structural features for attachment, growth, and differentiation of osteoblast cells. Smart afterglow paints can function as energy‐saving products that are able to persist lighting in the dark. Additionally, polyurethane paints (PURPs) have shown some limitations, including weak adhesion, poor mechanical performance, poor corrosion, and low water resistance as compared with solvent‐based paints. Herein, nanoparticles of lanthanide aluminate (NLA; 16–24 nm) were mixed with polyurethane and silica to develop novel photoluminescent nanocomposite paints. A precursor of NLA‐encapsulated silica nanoparticles (NLA@Silica; 200–225 nm) can be described as a SiO2‐coated NLA pigment prepared by the heterogeneous precipitation method. Steel was coated with nanocomposite paints made of PURP, silica, and NLA. Using emission spectra and Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) Lab coordinates, the coloring and transparency of painted films were investigated. Upon excitation at 365 nm, the UV‐irradiation of transparent painted films showed green emission at 518 nm. The hydrophobic activity and hardness properties were examined. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the anticorrosion of coatings applied to mild steel was studied. Improved anticorrosion characteristics were observed due to the fluorescence of NLA@Silica in the applied coatings. Smart photochromic and fluorescent textile refers to garments that alter their colorimetric properties in response to external light stimulus. Cotton fibers have been reported as a main resource for many textile and non‐textile industries, such as automobiles, medical devices, and furniture applications. Cotton is a natural fiber that is distinguished with breathability, softness, cheapness, and highly absorbent. However, there have been growing demands to find other resources for cotton textiles at high quality and low cost for various applications, such as sensor for harmful ultraviolet radiation. Herein, we present a novel method toward luminescent and photochromic nonwoven textiles from recycled cotton waste. Using the screen‐printing technology, a cotton fabric that is both photochromic and fluorescent was developed using aqueous inorganic phosphor nanoparticles (10–18 nm)‐containing printing paste. Both CIE Lab color coordinates and photoluminescence spectra showed that the transparent film printed on the nonwoven fabric develops a reversible green emission (519 nm) under ultraviolet light (365 nm), even at low pigment concentration (2%) in the printing paste. An anthocyanin (ACN) spectroscopic probe was extracted and immobilized into a matrix of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC)/urease enzyme to create a colorimetric nanocomposite film sensor. The ACN@CNC composite is a disposable molecular biosensor that uses urease as a catalyst, ACN as a molecular probe, and CNC as a probe carrier with a high surface area. The ACN spectroscopic probe was isolated from the pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.). A mordant was applied to fix ACN onto CNC by forming nanoparticles (6–14 nm) of mordant/ACN (M/ACN) complexation. CNC showed diameters in the range of 11–21 nm, and crystal lengths of 55–130 nm. Under acid/base conditions, the ACN probe solution in distilled water exhibited a reversible color change, as shown by the UV–Vis absorption spectra. In order to create a biocomposite film, CNC were reinforced with a sodium alginate biopolymer. Upon exposure to urea in an aqueous solution, the ACN@CNC film biosensor changes color from purple (598 nm) to white (432 nm). The detection limit of urea was determined at 25–450 ppm. Congo red dye is classified as a toxic chemical and can be harmful if ingested, inhaled, or in contact with the skin or eyes. It can cause irritation, allergic reactions, and skin sensitization in some individuals. Thus, in this paper, CaFe2O4 nanoparticles were produced by a simple Pechini sol-gel approach and used as an adsorbent material for the efficient disposal of Congo red dye from aqueous solutions. The maximum adsorption capacity of the CaFe2O4 towards Congo red dye is 318.47 mg/g. Furthermore, the synthesized CaFe2O4 nanoparticles exhibit an average crystal size of 24.34 nm. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination showed that the CaFe2O4 nanoparticles are basically ball-like particles with a mean grain size of 540.54 nm. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examination showed that the CaFe2O4 sample revealed aggregated spherical particles with a mean diameter of 27.48 nm. The Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) pattern reveals that the produced CaFe2O4 nanoparticles are composed of Ca, Fe, and O elements, with an atomic ratio of 1:2:4 of these elements, respectively. The disposal of Congo red dye by the synthesized CaFe2O4 nanoparticles is chemical, spontaneous, exothermic, perfectly aligned with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and exhibited excellent conformity with the Langmuir equilibrium isotherm.
